Things to Do in Fribourg (Museums, Old Town & A Lot More)

things to do fribourg

Fribourg is one of the largest medieval towns in Switzerland and it sits on the border of the canton of Fribourg in northwestern Switzerland and close to the popular Gruyere Region.

At an altitude of just 581 meters (1,906 ft) above sea level, it is a buzzy university town full of students from all over the world while also having some of the most impressive Gothic-style architecture in the country.

The city was founded in the 10th century by Herzog Berthold IV of Zaehringen and didn’t join the Swiss Confederation until the late 1400s. It has an incredibly rich history that is abundantly clear as you explore the town.

The entire city is also surrounded by the Sarine River on three sides which adds a lot to its beauty, along with the stunning architecture, of course.

It is safe to say that a visit to Fribourg, Switzerland will not disappoint, especially if you are a big fan of history and architecture. So, what are the best things to do in Fribourg during your visit? That is what we are here to find out.

Join me as I run through all the great things to do in Fribourg, Switzerland from the best museums to visit, the sights in the Old Town you simply can not miss, and lots more.

Table of Contents

Explore Fribourg’s Old City Center

Old Town of Fribourg

One thing you simply can’t miss and one of the best things to do in Fribourg is to take your time strolling around its medieval Old Town. The Old Town of Fribourg is pedestrianized so you won’t have to worry about traffic and can enjoy the peace of its beautiful cobblestoned streets.

There are over 200 Gothic-style houses to see in the Old Town and pretty much all of them have stunning facades, all of which are deserving of a picture or town.

The Old City dates back to the 12th century and is also home to beautiful squares, medieval churches, lovely antique shops, and lots more. Take your time exploring and be sure to split up your visit with a stroll by the river Sarine and stopping at one of the many delightful coffee shops along the way.

The Old Town is also home to a lot of great museums and art galleries (some of which we will discuss in more detail later in the article) which are well worth spending your time in. There are also lots of great restaurants that are well worth having lunch in.

You also have the choice to go on a guided tour around the Old City and it is the best way to learn all about the history of one of the oldest towns in the country. Tours are run in multiple languages and can be booked here .

The tours last about two hours and take you through the 12th to the 20th-century history of Fribourg and teach you all about the Swiss legends of this town!

Discover The Medieval Fountains

Fribourg Clear Fountain

A great way of seeing all that the Old Town of Fribourg has to offer is to try and see all 11 of its medieval fountains , as the route will showcase the best of the Old City along the way. The fountains are also rather beautiful.

Some of the historical fountains date back to the 15th century and were all built to give the people of the town clean and safe drinking water.

Named things like “Courage” and “Strength”, each of the fountains has its own particular style and if you get to see all the fountains, you’ll notice different architectural styles across the range.

There are Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque fountains all with incredible sculptures, carvings, arches, and ornate decor depending on the time they were built.

Visit St. Nicholas Cathedral

St. Nicholas Cathedral Fribourg

One of the top attractions in Fribourg’s Old City is the St Nicholas Cathedral , also known as the Fribourg Cathedral.

Admission to the cathedral is free for all but before you go in, be sure to admire it from the outside as it is one of the most beautiful buildings in Fribourg, Switzerland.

The cathedral is Gothic dating back to the 13th century. Building began in the late 1200s and it took over 100 years to be fully completed, which happened in 1430.

There is so much to take in when visiting this work of art, so be sure to take your time. Start with the amazing sculptures and the building’s architecture from the outside and then move inside to see the incredible stained glass windows, intricate carvings, and a stunning organ.

If you want to really immerse yourself in the cathedral, why not attend one of the services held there? It is a great way to slow down, reflect, and more.

Guided tours are also available in several different languages and there is no better way of understanding the Cathedral’s history than learning about it from a knowledgeable guide.

Climb the Tower at the Cathedral

St. Nicholas Cathedral’s Tower

While visiting St Nicholas Cathedral and seeing all the wonders like the stained glass windows, you have to climb St. Nicholas Cathedral’s tower, if you are able.

It is certainly not an easy climb as you will have to go up 365 steps to reach the top, so be sure to stop for a breather whenever you need to. It is well worth the climb though as the views from the tower are the best in Fribourg.

Sitting around 365 feet above the city, you will see stunning views of the city along with the river and endless Swiss landscapes which include the pre-alps. It is the best way to get a sense of Fribourg and its surroundings in my eyes, plus it is a great place to get some excellent photos too.

Be aware that access to the tower closes earlier than the Cathedral so do not arrive too late if you want to climb the tower. Check the website for opening and closing times.

Try Funicular Fribourg

Funicular Fribourg

Going for a ride on the Funicular Fribourg , also known as the Neuveville – Saint-Pierre funicular, is not just a great way to get around the city but you will also be riding in a historical monument.

The Fribourg Funicular was first opened in 1899 and it connects the lower part of the city with the upper altitude city, saving you a rather challenging hike uphill.

Something that amazes me and I love about this funicular is that it runs on the city’s wastewater. Considering the time it was built, this is some incredible engineering and it is one of the last funiculars in Europe to run on wastewater.

The funicular connects the Saint-Pierre and Neuveville neighborhoods of Fribourg and it runs every six minutes. It is the funnest, easiest, and most convenient way to get around the city and should not be missed while you are visiting Fribourg, Switzerland.

Cross The Bern Bridge

The Bern Bridge Fribourg

The Bern Bridge , also known as the Pont de Berne, is a stunning bridge in the heart of Fribourg’s Old City that crosses the River Sarnine. Taking a stroll across the bridge is a bit of a must as you get lovely views of the city across the river and it is quite a historical monument.

There are so many bridges in Fribourg as it is surrounded by the river on most sides but the Bern Bridge is the oldest bridge in the city. It was built in the 16th century out of wood and served as a replacement for a boat ferry that the town’s residents used to cross the river before it was made.

Sadly, the bridge had to be rebuilt out of stone and as it stands today, dates back to 1653 with its stone pillar and deck being replaced in 1853-54, and its roof in 1885.

That’s right, the Bern Bridge is a covered bridge and this adds a lot to its charm, so make sure you cross it when you are visiting Fribourg.

Visit Some Museums

Being a historical city, Fribourg is home to a lot of museums, and while you might not have time to see them all, I have put together a shortlist of the best ones to spend some time in while you are there.

Visit Espace Jean Tinguely

Espace Jean Tinguely

One of the coolest museums to see in Fribourg in my opinion is the Espace Jean Tinguely Museum which is located just down the street from the St Nicholas Cathedral in the Old City.

The Espace Jean Tinguely Museum is housed in an old tram depot and is home to stunning paintings & sculptures that were created by a husband and wife who are both artists – Jean Tinguely and his wife Niki de Saint Phalle.

Inside, you will be able to see some of Jean Tinguely’s incredible sculptural machines along with some great works of art by his wife.

The metal sculptures are quite incredible as they spin and tap their way around and feature incredibly intricate details. The colorful pieces of art add a lot to the exhibition and are just as incredible.

The museum is also home to temporary exhibitions so be sure to check the website to see what is on while you are there.

There are also guided tours of the museum which you can join if you want to learn more about the artists and the art showcased in the museum.

It is free for kids under 16 to enter the museum, it’s 12 CHF for adults, and 8 CHF for students.

Museum of Art and History

Museum of Art and History Fribourg

Sitting in the heart of the Old City of Fribourg, the Museum of Art and History is an incredible place to visit if you want to learn all about the region’s history and art over the ages.

The museum was founded in 1774 and has been going ever since, but is now housed in a different building from where it was originally.

Want To Save This For Later?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later!

The museum is actually in two buildings, the Hôtel Ratzé which dates back to the 16th century, and a former abattoir which is across the street. As you explore the museum, you’ll pass through the underground tunnel that connects the two builds which lie across the street from one another.

The museum’s collection of art dates back to medieval times and runs all the way through to the present day all of which were made in Fribourg. There are sculptures, paintings, and decorative art, as well as 17th and 18th-century historical artifacts for you to see.

One of the highlights is, without a doubt, the glass-working gallery and the gallery devoted to the incredible sculptor Adèle d’Affry.

There is no better way to learn about the history and culture of the region than spending some time in this museum. You can also join a guided tour if you would like to really dig into the details.

It is 12 CHF to enter the museum as an adult, students and seniors can get in for 8 CHF, and children under 16 go in for free.

Gutenberg Museum

Gutenberg Museum

Another of the top museums in Fribourg worth visiting is the Gutenberg Museum , especially if you want to learn about the history of printing and how books used to be made.

Sitting in the heart of the Old City in a lovely 16th-century building, the museum is named after the inventor of the printing press, Johannes Gutenberg.

It dates back to 1895 and exhibits a large collection of old typefaces, printing presses, and lots more. You will learn all about how books used to be printed and how printing has evolved over the ages.

The cost of admission to this museum is the exact same as the other museums we have looked at so far, 12 CHF for adults, 8 CHF for seniors & students, and free for kids under 16.

Swiss Puppet Museum

Swiss Puppet Museum Fribourg

A super fun museum to visit, especially if you are traveling with kids, is the Swiss Puppet Museum . Again, you’ll find this museum in the middle of the Old City and it is not just a museum as it also puts on excellent puppet shows too.

Founded in 1985 by Jean Bindschedler who was a painter, sculptor, and creator of puppets, it houses a collection of over 3,000 pieces which includes marionettes from around the world.

You will learn all about how puppets are made along with the art and history of puppetry, and do not miss out on the puppet performances in the marionette-themed café as they are excellent.

Natural History Museum

Natural History Museum of Fribourg

The Natural History Museum in Fribourg’s Old City is also excellent and is a great place for kids to learn all about earth sciences and biology through its various exhibitions.

The museum is home to countless specimens of animals, plants, and minerals that take you on a journey through the planet’s evolution.

You’ll stroll past a life-sized stuffed whale, a full dinosaur skeleton, and lots more as you explore your way through the ten thematic rooms of sciences as well as regional and global fauna.

The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions as well as events and other fun things to get involved in, so be sure to check their website to see what is on while you are visiting.

Take a Day Trip to Gruyeres

While you are visiting Fribourg, Switzerland is it well worth going on a day trip to the famous Swiss town of Gruyeres. Famous for its cheese, this medieval town is also architecturally beautiful and it is just 36 km away from Fribourg.

Getting There

Getting to Gruyeres from Fribourg is quick and easy via car or public transport. The drive takes just 30 minutes and you’ll cruise through some lovely scenery too.

To get there via public transport, hop on the train from Fribourg to Broc Village, the train takes about 45 minutes. At Broc, walk to the bus stop outside the train station and take the 260 bus to Gruyeres. The total journey time is around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Things To Do In Gruyeres

Visit the gruyeres castle.

Gruyeres Castle

While in Gruyeres, you shouldn’t miss out on seeing the Gruyeres Castle , especially if you enjoy history and architecture.

The castle dates back to the 13th century and as you stroll around this medieval fortress, you will pass through rooms filled with old artwork on the walls, historical artifacts, antique furniture, and lots more.

The best bit might just be the multimedia history show and some of the temporary exhibitions at the castle are also world-class. Take your camera too as the views from the castle are some of the best in Gruyeres.

It costs just 10 CHF for adults to enter, and 8 CHF for seniors and students. Children under 16 get to visit for free.

HR Giger Museum

HR Giger Museum

A visit to the HR Giger Museum is a rather unique experience. The museum is housed in Château St. Germain, a medieval castle that dates back to the 13th century and showcases

Surrealist art by the one and only Hans Ruedi Giger.

It has the largest collection of works by this Swiss Artist, famous for his contribution to the film “Alien”. As you walk around the museum, you will see over 200 sculptures, paintings, and more that are all a bit “out-of-this-world.

It costs 12 CHF for adults and 8 CHF for students, while kids under 16 go in for free.

Maison Cailler Chocolate Factory

Broc Chocolaterie Maison Cailler

While Gruyeres is famous for its cheese (we will discuss that next), it is also known for its chocolate, and going to the Maison Cailler Chocolate Factory is a great thing to do while you are there.

The factory is actually located in the village of Broc, not far from Gruyeres, where you change from the train to the bus if you are using public transport to get to Gruyeres.

At the factory, you will learn all about how Swiss chocolate is made in a multimedia tour. It takes you through the history of chocolate, how to grow cocoa beans, and how Cailler does it in its own way.

You’ll also get to see chocolate being made live on the factory floor and at the end get to taste some of the amazing Swiss chocolate too.

Visit A Cheese Factory

La Maison du Gruyere

It would be a crime to go to Gruyeres and not sample some of the delicious Gruyere cheese at one of the factories. The best factory to visit is La Maison du Gruyere in the center of the village.

You will get a tour of the factory and learn all about how they make Gruyere cheese starting with the collection of the milk, aging the cheese, and everything in between. In the end, there is, of course, a tasting session where you can sample a range of cheeses.

Tibet Museum

A lovely place to stop at while exploring Gruyeres is the Tibet Museum . It is a rather small museum that is all about showcasing incredible Tibetan art.

You will find a stunning exhibition of sacred Buddhist art inside and the resounding peacefulness of the museum is sure to help you slow down and do some reflection, in true Buddhist form.

Best Times To Visit Fribourg

When choosing the best times to visit Fribourg, we are looking for two main things – fewer crowds and great weather.

Generally speaking, the best months to visit Fribourg weather-wise are between May and October. These are general dry months for the city and you will usually be able to explore the city with blue skies and lots of sunshine.

However, both May and October can see some rain, and July and August are very busy with tourists. If you want a guarantee of great weather and fewer crowds, the months of June and September and the ideal times to visit the city.

If you want to visit Fribourg in the winter, I highly suggest going in mid-December as the city is alive with Christmas festivities. The Old Town is full of beautiful Christmas lights, decorations, and markets – it is truly beautiful and a great way to get you into the Christmas spirit.

Region of Fribourg

The Region of Fribourg is somewhat a world turned upside down: cold, limestone summits are found in the south and mild, even Mediterranean-like lakesides in the north. On its small territory, two languages coexist and three very distinct holiday regions overlap: the Pre-Alps, the city of Fribourg and the Three-Lakes Region.

The 12 best things to do in Freiburg, Germany’s greenest city

Kat Barber

Jan 7, 2022 • 9 min read

Couple shopping at an open-air market in Freiburg, Germany

Freiburg's open-air market is one of many rewarding stops in this famously sunny city AscentXmedia / Getty Images

With the enviable claim to fame of being Germany’s sunniest city, Freiburg is also one of its most eco-friendly.

Ever since a protest by residents in 1975 halted the construction of a nuclear generator on nearby farmland, the city has been a beacon of sustainability and citizen-led action. From cycle paths to communal gardens, and from a town hall clad entirely in solar panels to a tangible enthusiasm for local produce and outdoor pursuits, everything in this youthful University town is done with a conscience.

But Freiburg still showcases everything there is to love about Germany's smaller cities, from brightly painted half-timbered houses lining a cobblestone square to rowdy breweries serving up full beer mugs and huge schnitzels and ornate medieval gates guarding the walled city.

If you’re looking for a German getaway where it's easy to keep on top of your carbon footprint, look no further. Here's our pick of the top things to do in Freiburg.

Pedal along the Dreisam

Freiburg is a paradise for cyclists, with more than 400km (250 miles) of dedicated bike paths that crisscross the town and its flanking forests and villages. In fact, with twice as many bikes as cars, you'll feel like the odd one out if don't follow the lead of locals and saddle up. You can rent a city bike using the convenient Frelo bike-share scheme, and drop it off at any of dozens of parking stations scattered throughout the Freiburg area (rates start from €1 for 30 minutes).

Look out for the blue bicycle logo that marks the route of the FR1, a dedicated bike highway that straddles the Dreisam River. Starting in the old town, this lovely transect sails past community gardens, the old football stadium, sculpture parks, the Mundenhof animal sanctuary and plenty of street art. Take a pit stop at Cafe Extrablatt and fuel up on their popular weekend buffet breakfasts or grab a coffee before you pedal on your way.

Cheer on the local soccer team at the SC Stadium

Freiburg doesn't take itself too seriously, until the local football (soccer) team runs onto the pitch that is. If you happen to be in town when SC Freiburg are playing, try to snag tickets to a game. It's quite an experience – not only for the supercharged atmosphere, but also to check out the team's admirable commitment to sustainability.

Germany’s first completely solar-powered football ground, Europa Park Stadium was completed in late 2021 after the Bundesliga club outgrew their old home ground. The 37,000 seat stadium is fitted out with charging spots for electric vehicles, e-bikes and e-scooters and has almost 4,000 bicycle parking spots, and it's on track to become climate neutral.

If you can’t score tickets, don a red scarf and join supporters at a local pub – Heimliche Kneipe (Secret Pub) and O'Kelly's Irish pub both attract a sporting crowd.

Fly high in the Schauinslandbahn cable car

Climb aboard the Schauinslandbahn , Germany’s longest loop cable car, and glide to the top of  1,220m (4212ft) Schauinsland – the name translates, appropriately, to "look into the country." The 10-minute ride is breathtaking, but the views are even better from the top. Admire the panorama, visit the mining museum or walk amongst the pines and soak up the fresh mountain air.

Adventure lovers can cruise downhill on the 8km (5 mile) off-road scooter track , one of Europe’s longest. When it’s time to warm up, there’s nothing better than cozying up near the crackling fire as you take in the superb snowy views of the Rhine Valley from Die Bergstation restaurant (the fondue comes highly recommended).

View from the Schauinsland tower over peaceful countryside

Dip your toes in the Bächle

Wandering through the medieval old town, make sure you keep your feet dry or you might end up marrying a local, or so the local folklore goes. The watercourses that happily single travelers need to avoid are Freiburg's "Bächle" – long, open runnels flowing with clean water that run along many of the town’s streets.

These historic channels served as drainage in medieval times but and after the introduction of modern sewer systems, they were preserved as a nostalgic reminder of Freiburg's long history. Most importantly, the flow of clean water from the Dreisam helps cool the urban microclimate, so don’t be afraid to slip off your shoes and dip your toes in the cool water. Who knows, you might just find a new spouse!

Shop sustainably in the Sedan district

You won't find any of the big brands in this charming shopping district just south of the old town. Instead, the focus is on small-scale sustainable shopping. While you explore, order a coffee at Elephant Beans , where direct-sourced beans are roasted on-site, or grab a bite to eat at social enterprise Strandcafe, where traditional recipes are prepared by refugees using regional organic produce.

When it comes to the shopping, stop in at Glaskiste , a wholesome supermarket with a strict no-plastic policy, for local produce. Just around the corner, you’ll find beautiful organic clothing at Zündstoff’s corner boutique.

Make four-legged friends at Mundenhof

Animal lovers and families with kids in tow will love the Mundenhof animal sanctuary, set on 38 hectares of open greenery. You can get close to over 30 species of free-roaming domestic animals, including camels, horses, goats and cattle from all over the world. The sanctuary also has an extensive program caring for endangered animals such as bison, long-tailed macaques and gibbons.

Visitors can accompany the keepers on their daily feeding rounds from 2:30pm from March to October, and kids will also love getting their hands dirty in the educational on-site petting zoo known as KonTiKi. All the hay and grain needed to feed the animals is grown on the surrounding land – this is how every zoo should operate! Best of all, entry is free, but donations are welcome.

The Gothic-style architecture of Freiburger Munster

Sip Black Forest wine in a pop-up wine tavern

Freiburg offers rich pickings for wine lovers. Many of the region's vintners produce their wines in small batches that are hard to sell to restaurants or supermarkets. Instead, they set up their own pop-up wine taverns in garages, cellars and lounge rooms, and serve their wine alongside simple German fare. But there's a catch – these straussenwirtschaften (seasonal wine taverns), are only permitted to open for 16 weeks of the year, so they hang a big broom out front when they’re open for business.

Locals go pretty wild around April when spargelsaison (white asparagus season) begins – there’s nowhere better to try this tender delicacy than at Griestal-Strausse , a local winery in the hills outside Freiburg. Outside of asparagus season, try the kürbiscremesuppe (pumpkin cream soup) or the flammkuchen , a crispy, pizza-like cheese-topped bread typical of the region.

Explore Vauban’s utopian society

Wandering through the progressive suburb of Vauban offers a glimpse of how far-reaching environmental consciousness is here. The first clue is the lack of cars, with parking spots replaced by communal green spaces. Then you'll notice that the houses are all low-energy buildings, using solar cells or woodchip-fuelled generators for power.

Then, there are the co-op supermarkets, organic cafes, cute playgrounds and the community petting zoo. As you wander, you'll spot rooftop gardens, food-sharing pantries, organic waste digesters, conflict-resolution workshops and bike paths. Decide for yourself if this is a glimpse into Europe's bright future, or a one-off utopian dream!

Visit Freiburg's bustling produce market

At the heart of the city, Münsterplatz (Cathedral Square) is dominated by a 13th-century gothic tower and the 11th-century Freiburger Münster and filled by a daily farmers market, except for Sunday. Exclusively reserved for produce from the region, the market proudly displays delectable fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese and cold meats, crafts and flowers.

Don’t leave without trying the legendary lange rote (literally "Long Red") – a crispy, 35cm (14in) pork sausage doused in mustard. Get here early to sample a piece of the famous käsekuchen (cheesecake) from Stefans ; just look out for the bright yellow van.

Take in the views from Schlossberg

Wherever you are in Freiburg, you can see the mountains and the forest rising outside town, but there’s no better vantage point than the top of the tree-covered hill known as Schlossberg ("Castle Hill"). Rest your legs and jump into the cable car, which will whisk you up to a cozy beer garden in three minutes, or work off last night’s schnitzel and take an hour-long hike to the summit, stopping for a refreshing German ale en route.

At the top, push on and climb an extra 400 steps to reach the top of the observation tower, perched above the trees with panoramic views of the Black Forest, the Rhine plain and the old town below. In winter, the trees are often dusted with snow, while summer promises epic sunsets. At the end of July, Schlossberg transforms into a giant stage as live bands and DJs take over the beer garden and surrounding areas for the annual Schlossberg Festival.

Get wet to cool down or warm up in Freiburg

Whether you come to Freiburg in summer or winter, make sure you pack your swimsuit. When the weather is hot, join the locals as they cool off in the Dreisam river in the town center, or dip in the Opfinger or Dietenbachsee lakes, just a short tram ride out of town.

When it’s too cold or wet for sightseeing, warm your bones in the therapeutic waters of Keidel Mineral Thermal Spa . Mineral-rich thermal water from a local spring will leave you feeling rejuvenated while back and neck jets release your tight muscles. There’s also a sauna, but it's communal and clothing free, as is the German tradition. Visit mid-week to avoid the crowds.

Raise a glass to Freiburg's beer brewing history

German beer is renowned for its purity and flavor thanks to the Reinheitsgebot, an ancient beer law that limits brewers to using only four ingredients: malted grains, hops, water and yeast. Taste the results for yourself at Ganter Brewery and Feierling Brewery , which have been keeping locals refreshed since the 18th century.

Both breweries are still run by their respective families, and a tour of Ganter is a great way to learn more about how they balance tradition with modern technology. End with a beer tasting and snacks in the beer garden. You’ll either be horrified or thrilled to hear they offer a very special local drop, Weir – a half beer and half wine concoction. Prost!

Fribourg is a city in Switzerland that is also the canton's capital and economic centre. The city was founded in 1157 by Herzog Berthold IV of Zaehringen. Fribourg is known for its cultural plurality, university, and bridges over the Sarine River that link the French -speaking part of Switzerland to the German -speaking part.

Fribourg offers a multitude of architectural sights. The Old Town, with Switzerland's best-preserved fortifications, is under a preservation order and there are still more than 200 Gothic-style houses to be admired. In addition there are aristocratic town houses, monuments, St. Niklaus cathedral and numerous churches.

Fribourg has been a part of the Swiss Confederation since 1481, with over 10,000 inhabitants at that time. Since the city was founded on a peninsula many bridges were built to span the Sarine River, the first one in 1250. In the 19th century Fribourg was famous for its suspension bridges which have now been replaced with concrete. The university was founded in 1889. The 2000 census showed a population of 35,000 city residents and 235,000 in the Fribourg canton.

Sprinkled throughout the city are Renaissance fountains and more recent fountains such as the Tinguely Fountain made in 1984.

Fribourg has an excellent mainline rail service, run by SBB . Trains run frequently day and night from Geneva airport, Geneva, Thun, Lausanne, St Gallen, Bern and Zürich, and many other places in Switzerland. The 46.803 7.151 1 SBB Railway Station is in the modern city centre, from here head east (downhill) for Old Town. There's a second railway station 1 km north at Fribourg Poya: you'd only use this for St Leonard Sports Stadium or Caserne military base.

Bern airport is close by but has few flights, so the best airport for Fribourg is Geneva ( GVA  IATA ), with direct trains every 30 mins taking less than 2 hours. Alternatively use Zurich ( ZRH  IATA ) or perhaps Basel ( BSL  IATA ).

Flixbus direct services from Fribourg include Lyon, Frankfurt and Munich.

The bus station is 100 m east of the SBB at Place Georges Python.

Walk: most sights are within walking distance. You'll probably arrive at the SBB station in the modern city centre, which is bland, in parts brutalist. Go north about 300 m for the University. For the Old Town go east: the signposts take traffic down Route des Alpes but it's pleasanter to follow pedestrianised Rue de Lausanne. Both routes lead downhill to Place Tilleul, with the Cathedral of St Nicholas, the Basilica of Notre Dame, the Gutenberg Museum, and Espace Jean Tinguely Niki de St Phalle; nearby are the Convent and Museum of Art History. Continue downhill past the Cathedral to the foot of town in a loop of the River Sarine, crossed by the wooden Pont de Berne.

Bus routes 2 & 6 run from the SBB down to Place Tilleul and the Cathedral.

Fribourg, Switzerland: 13 Best Things To Do

A trip to Switzerland undoubtedly provides the opportunity to experience endless beautiful scenery, adventure, and memories. If you’re into history and architecture, you’ll want to make sure that you add the town of Fribourg to your list during your time in the country.

As one of the oldest towns in Switzerland, Fribourg provides the chance to step back in time and view some gothic architecture and other beautiful surroundings. You’ll find this sizable medieval town on a rock promontory in the middle of the country, surrounded on three sides by the Sarine River.

While you can undoubtedly get lost just wandering around the streets of this exciting town, you’ll likely want to make sure that you make the most of your journey here by visiting some of the most notable attractions. To help you plan your journey, here’s our list of the 13 best things to do in Fribourg, Switzerland.

Nicholas Cathedral

No visit to Fribourg would be completed without stopping by the St. Nicholas Cathedral. This prominent Catholic cathedral, constructed of gothic-style architecture, took over 150 years to build and truly showcases the beauty and commitment to creating such a place of worship.

While you admire the architecture and incredibly religious statues and art here, you can also climb the 365 steps to the top of the 74-meter-high tower. According to local legend, the tower remains unfinished because the money ran out while the people were constructing it.

You’ll get an incredible and unforgettable view of the entire town when you reach the top. It’s definitely worth making an effort to climb if you visit the area from April to October when it’s open to visitors.

Other notable things you’ll want to admire during your visit here include the incredible stained-glass windows in the cathedral. These windows, created between 1896 and 1936 by a Polish painter, represent one of the best collections of this type of religious stained-glass window in all of Europe.

Of course, not to be without mention also, are the cathedral’s organs. The first organ, located in the front of the St. Michel chapel, was installed between 1426 and 1428 and was replaced twice with larger organs. The last organ installed in that location dates to 1834.

The second organ, in the choir section, against the south wall, was first installed in 1485 and replaced in the 17th century.

The cathedral is also home to 13 different bells, each representing different years, and an extensive treasury of religious relics.

Find the cathedral in the middle of the city of Fribourg, about a 15-minute walk from the railway station. It’s open daily, and it is free to visit the cathedral, but the tower requires paid admission. You’ll also need to make an appointment if you intend to visit the treasury.

Gutenberg Museum

For another priceless piece of history, visit the Gutenberg Museum. Here, you’ll have a chance to learn about the history of letterpress printing and understand the different aspects of this type of communication.

If you’re traveling with children, they’ll likely enjoy seeing and learning about the history of printing, from the times of paper scrolls to modern-day printing presses. There’s also a display of old banknotes that many find quite interesting as well.

While visiting the museum, you’ll have the treat of seeing some great views of the city and can also see the Poya suspended bridge, which is the longest in Europe.

You’ll enjoy touring this multi-story collection of machines and their explanations, even if you’re not a bibliophile.

It’s not a very long part of your visit, as it will only take you about an hour or so to tour the complete building, but it makes an excellent addition to the day while you’re touring the medieval city.

Funicular Fribourg

There’s no way that you’ll spend time in Fribourg without seeing or hearing about the Funicular. This unique funicular railway hangs over the Old Town and the river Sarine. It’s listed as a cultural asset of national importance due to its engineering, which is described as a “technical engineering marvel.”

One interesting thing about this railway is that it has been running since 1899 and produces no exhaust fumes because a motor does not power it. Instead, the funicular receives its power from wastewater produced by the upper town. A 3000-liter tank stores the wastewater and powers it, while a driver regulates the speed using a cogwheel.

The railway climbs a total of 56.4 meters in altitude and is worth checking out during your visit to the city. The locals here refer to it as the “funi” and use it daily to get from the Basse-Ville to the higher elevation of the Old Towne Center. It’s about a 2-minute ride to the Old Town, with cars leaving approximately every six minutes.

On the way up, you’ll experience some excellent views of the city below you, and it’s a unique experience. Be forewarned that because it runs on wastewater, the smell isn’t always very pleasant in the area, but it shouldn’t turn you away from taking advantage of the experience.

Of course, you can also walk up the steps to the Old Town, but we recommend taking the funicular at least either up or down to feel like you’re transported back in time. The conductor makes the ride even more pleasant, engaging with the visitors and making them smile on the way up or down. It doesn’t feel like a tourist attraction at all, but it immerses you into the area’s culture and makes you marvel at the engineering required to develop this system.

Guided Tour Of The Old Town

Since this great town has so much history, you’ll be able to make the most of it and learn a lot with a guided tour of the old town. By taking this walking tour alone or with your small group, you’ll experience the town within the city walls differently. Your expert guide will tell you all about the unique features of the city, known as one of the most beautiful architectural places in Europe.

The tours run from May through October, and you can join one every Saturday at 2:00 PM by meeting in front of the St. Nicholas Cathedral. It’s important to note that the tours are only given in French and German, and there aren’t any English tours available. It’s recommended that you make reservations first. However, if the tour isn’t full, you can register and join it on-site.

Once you start the tour, you’ll take a leisurely 1.5-hour stroll around Fribourg’s quaint streets and learn not only about the city’s history and unique facts but also discover the city’s most beautiful locations.

The end of the tour brings you to Petit-St-Jean Square. From there, you can take the bus back to the city center or hop on the “Petit Train” a small hop-on-hop-off train that weaves you throughout the town and provides another fun guided tour of the area.

Although there’s a fee to join the guided tour, children under six are free to attend, and it’s definitely worth joining for the unique perspective you’ll get of the area.

Bern Bridge

A stop at the Bern Bridge is essential because it is the first bridge ever built in the city, dating from the mid-13th century, about 100 years after the founding of the city. Made of timber trestles, the bridge crossed over the Sarine River. Unfortunately, the original bridge had to be sawn down in 1340 to protect from Bernese invaders planning an attack.

As it stands today, the bridge dates back to 1653 and has had several improvements (stone pillar and deck in 1854 and the roof in 1885). It’s the city’s only covered bridge and remains a source of admiration for both locals and tourists.

The bridge stands strong today and is crossed daily by vehicle traffic, including buses, a testament to its outstanding engineering and architecture. Without the bridge, the only way of crossing the river would be by boat.

As you visit the bridge, you can also visit the Bern Gate, which the town built around the time the original bridge was constructed (mid-13th century). This gate helped to fortify the town further and was heightened twice—once in the 14th century and again in the 15th century. The final height is 24 meters.

Take a walk across the bridge to fully embrace the town’s quaintness and feel like you’ve stepped back in time. You’ll find shops, old cafes, and restaurants on both sides and numerous other attractions in the area. It’s located just east of the center of Fribourg and only a three-minute walk from the Swiss Puppet Museum.

Make sure not to forget your camera, as the bridge provides the ideal backdrop for some truly memorable photos. The Bern Bridge is consistently listed as a “must-do” activity in Fribourg.

Chapelle de Lorette (Loreto Chapel)

This small-scale copy of the Santa Casa de Loreto in Italy stands above the town of Fribourg and provides beautiful views of the Old Town below. The chapel was built in 1648 as an attempt to restore peace to Switzerland after the difficulties of the 16th century. Today, it represents one of the country’s most beautiful “baroque-style” buildings.

Take some time to visit, relax, and enjoy the peaceful views from the top as you gaze out over the red rooftops. It does require walking up a steep footpath to reach, which may prove difficult to some visitors and takes about half an hour to complete. However, a mini-train can help get you up there easier if you’re visiting in the summer months.

Plan to spend about half a day touring, taking pictures, and enjoying the views. A visit here is sure to inspire you and leave you feeling renewed.

Visit Schwarzsee

If you love nature, you’ll want to visit the Black Lake in the Eastern Fribourg Pre-Alps, where you’ll admire its dark waters and the reflections of the surrounding mountains. There’s a fun legend surrounding this lake, which says it got its dark color from a giant who washed his feet in it. However, it’s not always very dark. Depending on how the light hits it, you’ll see various hues, even some very turquoise-blue.

This place is great to visit any time of the year. In the winter, it’s a family-friendly ski area that has a chair lift, ski school, and even marked snowshoe trails. When the Schwarzee freezes over, you can ice skate on it and even cross-country ski.

You’ll find a network of walking paths in the spring and summer months that take you around the lake. Or, if you’re more adventurous, you’ll also find mountain bike trails there, including the trail at Plaffeien, which has 14 artificial obstacles.

You can also use the lake itself for recreational purposes, participating in swimming, fishing, rowing, and other activities. As you enjoy the family fun, also enjoy everything else that nature has to offer. You may even spot a marmot, chamois, or gold eagle in the area.

If you really want to take in the scenery, grab a spot on a two-day hiking tour of the area, where you’ll spend the night inside a mountain hut and get a feel for the natural wonderland that makes up the area. In fact, the area is listed in the Swiss Inventory of Landscape and Natural Monuments of National Importance, a testimony to its beauty and incredible flora and fauna.

Tour The Fortifications

All the city’s fortifications were built between the 13th and 15th centuries and took advantage of the Sarine River as a natural barrier against the enemy. Many of these magnificent buildings have been preserved since then and are open for the public to tour. You’ll find them on the west side of the city.

Unfortunately, not all fortifications could be preserved, as some disappeared over time as Fribourg made changes in its urban planning.

As you make your way through the tour, you’ll find six towers, five gates, and seven wall sections designed to further protect the city from invasion.

You can take a self-tour or participate in a guided tour of the structures. If you choose to go with a guide, you’ll learn about the medieval and cultural heritage. To this day, this area is known as the most significant piece of medieval military architecture in Switzerland.

The guided tour lasts about 3 hours and is not a very easy walk. Please consider this, as it may not be the best option to complete with small children or those who can’t traverse slightly difficult areas (including stairs). However, it’s the most comprehensive way to see all of these structures and learn about their fascinating history.

Note also that the fortifications are only open to the public between May and November, and you cannot access them during winter. However, during the summer months, it’s open daily.

Art & History Museum

Those who love art and culture won’t want to miss a walk through Fribourg’s Art and History Museum. This museum occupies three city buildings, a sculpture garden, and a palazzo. It’s housed in Fribourg’s only Renaissance building, the Ratze Palace.

In the museum, you’ll experience over a thousand years of art and history, with sculptures and paintings from the 11th to the 20th centuries and historical artifacts. If you just wish to take a quick break from exploring the city, you can relax in the garden, which is free to visit and admire.

Various temporary exhibitions switch periodically. This museum makes a great stop on your tour of Fribourg and a great way to immerse yourself in culture.

Guided Hiking Tours

In the Fribourg region, you’ll find numerous opportunities to take part in guided hikes around the area that encompass various degrees of difficulty to meet the needs of all different hikers and adventurers.

Browse the guide of available hikes organized by the Fribourg Hiking Association, and choose one that meets your expertise level and interests. You’ll find information on where to meet and what to expect during your adventure.

It’s a great way to explore the natural beauty of the area with an experienced local who will tell you valuable information about the area and its history. It is definitely a must-do for those who enjoy the outdoors.

Medieval Fountains

As you get to know the city and its charm, make sure to visit many of the medieval fountains that grace the area. These beautiful water features located across the city give you a peak at history and another fun way to step back in time.

Several fountains date back to the 14th century and have outstanding architectural elements and unique artistic aspects. Make a point to check them all off your list during your visit, and you’ll feel like you’re on a secret scavenger hunt as you search for and admire these unique treasures.

Swiss Puppet Museum

One of the largest puppet museums you’ll ever visit, the Swiss Puppet Museum has a collection of over 3,000 pieces, including puppets, masks, and puppet theaters. The pieces in the collection come from all over the world, including Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Children will love exploring this exciting piece of history that’s only steps away from the Bern Bridge. You’ll also find a marionette-themed cafe and a performance space in the building. The space caters to visitors of all ages, with guided tours, puppet-making geared towards adults and “treasure-hunt” visits, and puppet workshops for children. There’s also an “on your own” discovery tour.

During your time in Fribourg, this museum makes a great way to spend the afternoon.

Delight In The Local Chocolate And Fondue

The Fribourg region is known for its fondue, and you’ll find some of the best-tasting options in all of Switzerland here. It’s made of half-Gruyere, and half-Vacherin cheese, and both locals and visitors enjoy it. Try some at Cafe du Midi or one of the other locations in the town that serve up this specialty.

After you’ve had your fill of this “cheese soup,” delight in the area’s Swiss chocolate as well. A visit to the Maison Cailler chocolate factory, just a short drive outside the town, will immerse you in the Swiss chocolate-making process.

During your visit, learn the history of chocolate making, learn about the suppliers and ingredients, and view the manufacturing process. Of course, you won’t leave without sampling the specialties at the end of your tour and buying some to take home with you. This delicious excursion will surely delight the whole family.

Other Important Information For Your Visit To Fribourg

Best times to visit fribourg .

The best times to visit the town of Fribourg depends on the activities you want to do while you are there. If you’re looking to ski or snowboard, you’ll, of course, want to visit in the winter months.

However, many of the Old Town’s walking tours and historical attractions are only open during the spring and summer, so those months are generally the best time to visit to tour the town and take advantage of the historical and cultural offerings there.

The busiest month is June, followed by August and April. These are great months to visit Fribourg but expect that you will pay more for lodging and flights. These things will be less expensive and less crowded if you visit during the off-season (between the summer and winter).

How To Get There

Fribourg is relatively easy to get to once you arrive in Switzerland from all of Switzerland’s three main airports, so whichever one you fly into, you’ll be able to access the town without too much effort. However, most people recommend flying into Zurich, if possible.

The best way to arrive into the town is by train. Take the train to Fribourg Station directly from the airport, and you’ll arrive in a little less than 2 hours.

Where To Stay

Accommodations are plentiful in the area, and you’ll find over 25 hotels with varying price levels. If you want to stay in a historic building, check out the Hotel de la Rose or Hotel Le Sauvage. For a more modern option, try the Hotel Alpha in the center of the city or the Hôtel aux Remparts.

Just make sure to check availability and book your room in advance, especially during the busy seasons.
