Things to Do in Fribourg (Museums, Old Town & A Lot More)

things to do fribourg

Fribourg is one of the largest medieval towns in Switzerland and it sits on the border of the canton of Fribourg in northwestern Switzerland and close to the popular Gruyere Region.

At an altitude of just 581 meters (1,906 ft) above sea level, it is a buzzy university town full of students from all over the world while also having some of the most impressive Gothic-style architecture in the country.

The city was founded in the 10th century by Herzog Berthold IV of Zaehringen and didn’t join the Swiss Confederation until the late 1400s. It has an incredibly rich history that is abundantly clear as you explore the town.

The entire city is also surrounded by the Sarine River on three sides which adds a lot to its beauty, along with the stunning architecture, of course.

It is safe to say that a visit to Fribourg, Switzerland will not disappoint, especially if you are a big fan of history and architecture. So, what are the best things to do in Fribourg during your visit? That is what we are here to find out.

Join me as I run through all the great things to do in Fribourg, Switzerland from the best museums to visit, the sights in the Old Town you simply can not miss, and lots more.

Table of Contents

Explore Fribourg’s Old City Center

Old Town of Fribourg

One thing you simply can’t miss and one of the best things to do in Fribourg is to take your time strolling around its medieval Old Town. The Old Town of Fribourg is pedestrianized so you won’t have to worry about traffic and can enjoy the peace of its beautiful cobblestoned streets.

There are over 200 Gothic-style houses to see in the Old Town and pretty much all of them have stunning facades, all of which are deserving of a picture or town.

The Old City dates back to the 12th century and is also home to beautiful squares, medieval churches, lovely antique shops, and lots more. Take your time exploring and be sure to split up your visit with a stroll by the river Sarine and stopping at one of the many delightful coffee shops along the way.

The Old Town is also home to a lot of great museums and art galleries (some of which we will discuss in more detail later in the article) which are well worth spending your time in. There are also lots of great restaurants that are well worth having lunch in.

You also have the choice to go on a guided tour around the Old City and it is the best way to learn all about the history of one of the oldest towns in the country. Tours are run in multiple languages and can be booked here .

The tours last about two hours and take you through the 12th to the 20th-century history of Fribourg and teach you all about the Swiss legends of this town!

Discover The Medieval Fountains

Fribourg Clear Fountain

A great way of seeing all that the Old Town of Fribourg has to offer is to try and see all 11 of its medieval fountains , as the route will showcase the best of the Old City along the way. The fountains are also rather beautiful.

Some of the historical fountains date back to the 15th century and were all built to give the people of the town clean and safe drinking water.

Named things like “Courage” and “Strength”, each of the fountains has its own particular style and if you get to see all the fountains, you’ll notice different architectural styles across the range.

There are Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque fountains all with incredible sculptures, carvings, arches, and ornate decor depending on the time they were built.

Visit St. Nicholas Cathedral

St. Nicholas Cathedral Fribourg

One of the top attractions in Fribourg’s Old City is the St Nicholas Cathedral , also known as the Fribourg Cathedral.

Admission to the cathedral is free for all but before you go in, be sure to admire it from the outside as it is one of the most beautiful buildings in Fribourg, Switzerland.

The cathedral is Gothic dating back to the 13th century. Building began in the late 1200s and it took over 100 years to be fully completed, which happened in 1430.

There is so much to take in when visiting this work of art, so be sure to take your time. Start with the amazing sculptures and the building’s architecture from the outside and then move inside to see the incredible stained glass windows, intricate carvings, and a stunning organ.

If you want to really immerse yourself in the cathedral, why not attend one of the services held there? It is a great way to slow down, reflect, and more.

Guided tours are also available in several different languages and there is no better way of understanding the Cathedral’s history than learning about it from a knowledgeable guide.

Climb the Tower at the Cathedral

St. Nicholas Cathedral’s Tower

While visiting St Nicholas Cathedral and seeing all the wonders like the stained glass windows, you have to climb St. Nicholas Cathedral’s tower, if you are able.

It is certainly not an easy climb as you will have to go up 365 steps to reach the top, so be sure to stop for a breather whenever you need to. It is well worth the climb though as the views from the tower are the best in Fribourg.

Sitting around 365 feet above the city, you will see stunning views of the city along with the river and endless Swiss landscapes which include the pre-alps. It is the best way to get a sense of Fribourg and its surroundings in my eyes, plus it is a great place to get some excellent photos too.

Be aware that access to the tower closes earlier than the Cathedral so do not arrive too late if you want to climb the tower. Check the website for opening and closing times.

Try Funicular Fribourg

Funicular Fribourg

Going for a ride on the Funicular Fribourg , also known as the Neuveville – Saint-Pierre funicular, is not just a great way to get around the city but you will also be riding in a historical monument.

The Fribourg Funicular was first opened in 1899 and it connects the lower part of the city with the upper altitude city, saving you a rather challenging hike uphill.

Something that amazes me and I love about this funicular is that it runs on the city’s wastewater. Considering the time it was built, this is some incredible engineering and it is one of the last funiculars in Europe to run on wastewater.

The funicular connects the Saint-Pierre and Neuveville neighborhoods of Fribourg and it runs every six minutes. It is the funnest, easiest, and most convenient way to get around the city and should not be missed while you are visiting Fribourg, Switzerland.

Cross The Bern Bridge

The Bern Bridge Fribourg

The Bern Bridge , also known as the Pont de Berne, is a stunning bridge in the heart of Fribourg’s Old City that crosses the River Sarnine. Taking a stroll across the bridge is a bit of a must as you get lovely views of the city across the river and it is quite a historical monument.

There are so many bridges in Fribourg as it is surrounded by the river on most sides but the Bern Bridge is the oldest bridge in the city. It was built in the 16th century out of wood and served as a replacement for a boat ferry that the town’s residents used to cross the river before it was made.

Sadly, the bridge had to be rebuilt out of stone and as it stands today, dates back to 1653 with its stone pillar and deck being replaced in 1853-54, and its roof in 1885.

That’s right, the Bern Bridge is a covered bridge and this adds a lot to its charm, so make sure you cross it when you are visiting Fribourg.

Visit Some Museums

Being a historical city, Fribourg is home to a lot of museums, and while you might not have time to see them all, I have put together a shortlist of the best ones to spend some time in while you are there.

Visit Espace Jean Tinguely

Espace Jean Tinguely

One of the coolest museums to see in Fribourg in my opinion is the Espace Jean Tinguely Museum which is located just down the street from the St Nicholas Cathedral in the Old City.

The Espace Jean Tinguely Museum is housed in an old tram depot and is home to stunning paintings & sculptures that were created by a husband and wife who are both artists – Jean Tinguely and his wife Niki de Saint Phalle.

Inside, you will be able to see some of Jean Tinguely’s incredible sculptural machines along with some great works of art by his wife.

The metal sculptures are quite incredible as they spin and tap their way around and feature incredibly intricate details. The colorful pieces of art add a lot to the exhibition and are just as incredible.

The museum is also home to temporary exhibitions so be sure to check the website to see what is on while you are there.

There are also guided tours of the museum which you can join if you want to learn more about the artists and the art showcased in the museum.

It is free for kids under 16 to enter the museum, it’s 12 CHF for adults, and 8 CHF for students.

Museum of Art and History

Museum of Art and History Fribourg

Sitting in the heart of the Old City of Fribourg, the Museum of Art and History is an incredible place to visit if you want to learn all about the region’s history and art over the ages.

The museum was founded in 1774 and has been going ever since, but is now housed in a different building from where it was originally.

The museum is actually in two buildings, the Hôtel Ratzé which dates back to the 16th century, and a former abattoir which is across the street. As you explore the museum, you’ll pass through the underground tunnel that connects the two builds which lie across the street from one another.

The museum’s collection of art dates back to medieval times and runs all the way through to the present day all of which were made in Fribourg. There are sculptures, paintings, and decorative art, as well as 17th and 18th-century historical artifacts for you to see.

One of the highlights is, without a doubt, the glass-working gallery and the gallery devoted to the incredible sculptor Adèle d’Affry.

There is no better way to learn about the history and culture of the region than spending some time in this museum. You can also join a guided tour if you would like to really dig into the details.

It is 12 CHF to enter the museum as an adult, students and seniors can get in for 8 CHF, and children under 16 go in for free.

Gutenberg Museum

Gutenberg Museum

Another of the top museums in Fribourg worth visiting is the Gutenberg Museum , especially if you want to learn about the history of printing and how books used to be made.

Sitting in the heart of the Old City in a lovely 16th-century building, the museum is named after the inventor of the printing press, Johannes Gutenberg.

It dates back to 1895 and exhibits a large collection of old typefaces, printing presses, and lots more. You will learn all about how books used to be printed and how printing has evolved over the ages.

The cost of admission to this museum is the exact same as the other museums we have looked at so far, 12 CHF for adults, 8 CHF for seniors & students, and free for kids under 16.

Swiss Puppet Museum

Swiss Puppet Museum Fribourg

A super fun museum to visit, especially if you are traveling with kids, is the Swiss Puppet Museum . Again, you’ll find this museum in the middle of the Old City and it is not just a museum as it also puts on excellent puppet shows too.

Founded in 1985 by Jean Bindschedler who was a painter, sculptor, and creator of puppets, it houses a collection of over 3,000 pieces which includes marionettes from around the world.

You will learn all about how puppets are made along with the art and history of puppetry, and do not miss out on the puppet performances in the marionette-themed café as they are excellent.

Natural History Museum

Natural History Museum of Fribourg

The Natural History Museum in Fribourg’s Old City is also excellent and is a great place for kids to learn all about earth sciences and biology through its various exhibitions.

The museum is home to countless specimens of animals, plants, and minerals that take you on a journey through the planet’s evolution.

You’ll stroll past a life-sized stuffed whale, a full dinosaur skeleton, and lots more as you explore your way through the ten thematic rooms of sciences as well as regional and global fauna.

The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions as well as events and other fun things to get involved in, so be sure to check their website to see what is on while you are visiting.

Take a Day Trip to Gruyeres

While you are visiting Fribourg, Switzerland is it well worth going on a day trip to the famous Swiss town of Gruyeres. Famous for its cheese, this medieval town is also architecturally beautiful and it is just 36 km away from Fribourg.

Getting There

Getting to Gruyeres from Fribourg is quick and easy via car or public transport. The drive takes just 30 minutes and you’ll cruise through some lovely scenery too.

To get there via public transport, hop on the train from Fribourg to Broc Village, the train takes about 45 minutes. At Broc, walk to the bus stop outside the train station and take the 260 bus to Gruyeres. The total journey time is around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Things To Do In Gruyeres

Visit the gruyeres castle.

Gruyeres Castle

While in Gruyeres, you shouldn’t miss out on seeing the Gruyeres Castle , especially if you enjoy history and architecture.

The castle dates back to the 13th century and as you stroll around this medieval fortress, you will pass through rooms filled with old artwork on the walls, historical artifacts, antique furniture, and lots more.

The best bit might just be the multimedia history show and some of the temporary exhibitions at the castle are also world-class. Take your camera too as the views from the castle are some of the best in Gruyeres.

It costs just 10 CHF for adults to enter, and 8 CHF for seniors and students. Children under 16 get to visit for free.

HR Giger Museum

HR Giger Museum

A visit to the HR Giger Museum is a rather unique experience. The museum is housed in Château St. Germain, a medieval castle that dates back to the 13th century and showcases

Surrealist art by the one and only Hans Ruedi Giger.

It has the largest collection of works by this Swiss Artist, famous for his contribution to the film “Alien”. As you walk around the museum, you will see over 200 sculptures, paintings, and more that are all a bit “out-of-this-world.

It costs 12 CHF for adults and 8 CHF for students, while kids under 16 go in for free.

Maison Cailler Chocolate Factory

Broc Chocolaterie Maison Cailler

While Gruyeres is famous for its cheese (we will discuss that next), it is also known for its chocolate, and going to the Maison Cailler Chocolate Factory is a great thing to do while you are there.

The factory is actually located in the village of Broc, not far from Gruyeres, where you change from the train to the bus if you are using public transport to get to Gruyeres.

At the factory, you will learn all about how Swiss chocolate is made in a multimedia tour. It takes you through the history of chocolate, how to grow cocoa beans, and how Cailler does it in its own way.

You’ll also get to see chocolate being made live on the factory floor and at the end get to taste some of the amazing Swiss chocolate too.

Visit A Cheese Factory

La Maison du Gruyere

It would be a crime to go to Gruyeres and not sample some of the delicious Gruyere cheese at one of the factories. The best factory to visit is La Maison du Gruyere in the center of the village.

You will get a tour of the factory and learn all about how they make Gruyere cheese starting with the collection of the milk, aging the cheese, and everything in between. In the end, there is, of course, a tasting session where you can sample a range of cheeses.

Tibet Museum

A lovely place to stop at while exploring Gruyeres is the Tibet Museum . It is a rather small museum that is all about showcasing incredible Tibetan art.

You will find a stunning exhibition of sacred Buddhist art inside and the resounding peacefulness of the museum is sure to help you slow down and do some reflection, in true Buddhist form.

Best Times To Visit Fribourg

When choosing the best times to visit Fribourg, we are looking for two main things – fewer crowds and great weather.

Generally speaking, the best months to visit Fribourg weather-wise are between May and October. These are general dry months for the city and you will usually be able to explore the city with blue skies and lots of sunshine.

However, both May and October can see some rain, and July and August are very busy with tourists. If you want a guarantee of great weather and fewer crowds, the months of June and September and the ideal times to visit the city.

If you want to visit Fribourg in the winter, I highly suggest going in mid-December as the city is alive with Christmas festivities. The Old Town is full of beautiful Christmas lights, decorations, and markets – it is truly beautiful and a great way to get you into the Christmas spirit.

Region of Fribourg

The Region of Fribourg is somewhat a world turned upside down: cold, limestone summits are found in the south and mild, even Mediterranean-like lakesides in the north. On its small territory, two languages coexist and three very distinct holiday regions overlap: the Pre-Alps, the city of Fribourg and the Three-Lakes Region.

Fribourg is a city in Switzerland that is also the canton's capital and economic centre. The city was founded in 1157 by Herzog Berthold IV of Zaehringen. Fribourg is known for its cultural plurality, university, and bridges over the Sarine River that link the French -speaking part of Switzerland to the German -speaking part.

Fribourg offers a multitude of architectural sights. The Old Town, with Switzerland's best-preserved fortifications, is under a preservation order and there are still more than 200 Gothic-style houses to be admired. In addition there are aristocratic town houses, monuments, St. Niklaus cathedral and numerous churches.

Understand [ edit ]

Fribourg has been a part of the Swiss Confederation since 1481, with over 10,000 inhabitants at that time. Since the city was founded on a peninsula many bridges were built to span the Sarine River, the first one in 1250. In the 19th century Fribourg was famous for its suspension bridges which have now been replaced with concrete. The university was founded in 1889. The 2000 census showed a population of 35,000 city residents and 235,000 in the Fribourg canton.

Sprinkled throughout the city are Renaissance fountains and more recent fountains such as the Tinguely Fountain made in 1984.

Get in [ edit ]

By train [ edit ].

Fribourg has an excellent mainline rail service, run by SBB . Trains run frequently day and night from Geneva airport, Geneva, Thun, Lausanne, St Gallen, Bern and Zürich, and many other places in Switzerland. The 46.803 7.151 1 SBB Railway Station is in the modern city centre, from here head east (downhill) for Old Town. There's a second railway station 1 km north at Fribourg Poya: you'd only use this for St Leonard Sports Stadium or Caserne military base.

By plane [ edit ]

Bern airport is close by but has few flights, so the best airport for Fribourg is Geneva ( GVA  IATA ), with direct trains every 30 mins taking less than 2 hours. Alternatively use Zurich ( ZRH  IATA ) or perhaps Basel ( BSL  IATA ).

By bus [ edit ]

Flixbus direct services from Fribourg include Lyon, Frankfurt and Munich.

The bus station is 100 m east of the SBB at Place Georges Python.

Map

Get around [ edit ]

Walk: most sights are within walking distance. You'll probably arrive at the SBB station in the modern city centre, which is bland, in parts brutalist. Go north about 300 m for the University. For the Old Town go east: the signposts take traffic down Route des Alpes but it's pleasanter to follow pedestrianised Rue de Lausanne. Both routes lead downhill to Place Tilleul, with the Cathedral of St Nicholas, the Basilica of Notre Dame, the Gutenberg Museum, and Espace Jean Tinguely Niki de St Phalle; nearby are the Convent and Museum of Art History. Continue downhill past the Cathedral to the foot of town in a loop of the River Sarine, crossed by the wooden Pont de Berne.

Bus routes 2 & 6 run from the SBB down to Place Tilleul and the Cathedral.

Fribourg – walk through the captivating old town

It was one of the precious moments when my dear half suggested that we could spend our free Sunday afternoon in the town rather than hiking in nature. And his choice was Friborg. And so, before he could change his mind, I took two printed guides (yes, people, real books! 🙂 ) and started planning a tour of this town, which we always just passed by but never stopped here.

Friborg is located less than 35 kilometers southwest of Bern. Originally, we planned to park at the Parking des Alpes near Place Georges-Python, but since it was a Sunday, we also found a vacancy in the adjacent Rue de l’Hôpital (parking on Sundays is free of charge).

Fribourg or Freiburg?

Friborg, like Biel, is located on the language borderline. The local river Sarine serves as the so-called Röstigraben – divides the town into the French-speaking Swiss on the west bank and the German-speaking Swiss on the east bank. That is why we can find the place name both French Freiburg and German Freiburg. And all the signs in the town are bilingual. I will keep the French version (because I like it more 🙂 ).

Old town tour

The historical part of this university town (the name literally means “Free Castle”) is located on a slope in the Sarine (German Saane) River meander. We originally chose Place Georges-Python as our starting point (Georges Python was the founder of the local university) near Rue de Lausanne , where the old town begins. A street full of shops and cafés runs downhill and leads to Place do Nova Friburgo. This is where the dominant of Fribourg – the tower of St. Nicholas de Myre’s Cathedral – appears in front of you.

fribourg tourist map

To get to it, we crossed the street to get to the  Town Hall with the outer double staircase. On the square in front of the late Gothic building, there is a fountain that depicts Saint George fighting a dragon.

fribourg tourist map

Then we walked through the short lane of the Rue des Épouses (“Wife Street”), which is bridged with a sign of a married couple and the inscription “Voici la rue des Épouses fidèles et aussi le coin des Maris modèles”. Translated as “here is the alley of faithful wives and also model spouses” 🙂

fribourg tourist map

Finally, an impressive Gothic cathedral emerged before us. It is open to the public during the day (paid tours are provided by Friborg Tourisme). Inside, it is worth mentioning an octagonal baptismal font, nicely decorated pulpit and colored stained glass.

fribourg tourist map

We decided to climb the tower of the cathedral . It is 73 meters high and you have to climb 365 stairs to get up. Like in Bern , there is an entrance fee: Adult 4 francs, child 1 franc (open until 17:00, last entrance is possible at 16:30). Even though the spiral staircase seemed to be infinite (and my head was spinning), those views were worth it!

fribourg tourist map

From the cathedral, we headed through the Grand Rue toward the lower part of the town. We walked down the street of Stalden down to the Place du Petit-St-Jean to the Auge district.

fribourg tourist map

Over the Pont du Milieu bridge (be careful – buses run over it, so do not let the children out of sight!), we got to the other side of the Sarine River.

fribourg tourist map

On Planche Inférieure , past an old granary (from 1708) with the shield in the shape of stairs and two-color shutters, we reached the Pont de St-Jean Bridge to get back to the “right side of the river.”

fribourg tourist map

We found ourselves in the Neuveville district – the guides * say it’s the most photogenic part of the town. We did not go to the left on Rue de Neuveville, which is said to be full of original Gothic houses and leads to the local funicular (I will mention it later), but we went straight up to the Escalier du Court-Chemin (“staircase shortcut” – but doable with a stroller!) and found ourselves again near the Town Hall. And back again through Rue de Lausanne. Here I definitely recommend having your ice cream in Gelateria Solemio!

fribourg tourist map

Where to next time

I am sure that I would definitely like to visit Friborg again because in the afternoon we spent here we certainly did not see all the sights and attractions of this town. So what’s left for the next time?

  • Fribourg funicular – links the lower part of the town with the upper every six minutes. Nowhere else in Europe does a funicular lurch up the mountainside with the aid of (stinky) sewage water.
  • Villars Maitre Chocolatier – the local chocolate factory is not open to the public, but it is certainly worth visiting its cafe-shop Route de Fonderie 2.
  • Café Restaurant Belvédère – The terrace of this restaurant at the beginning of Stalden Street is said to have a wonderful view.
  • Chapelle de Lorette – another sightseeing point (view of the chapel and the path to it is captured on a photo from the cathedral tower – see above)
  • Murtenlauf – the local race commemorates the messenger sprint from Murten to Friborg in 1476 to relay the glad tiding that the Swiss had defeated Charles the Bold…only to drop dead with exhaustion on arrival. The race is 17.17km long and I’m afraid of signing up for it because I´m afraid I would end up like the poor messenger 😀 (for those interested: 85th year of the race will take place on 7.10.2018)

And what about you? Have you ever visited Friborg? What did you enjoy most here? Would you recommend a visit to others? Send me your comments!

History of Fribourg

Fribourg is the capital of the Canton of Fribourg in Switzerland. It has a population of about 55,000 people. The city is located at the confluence of the Saane and Rhone rivers. Fribourg was founded as a Roman town in the 1st century AD by the general Servianus Gallus. It received its charter from the Emperor Charlemagne in 888 AD and became an imperial free city. It prospered from its position as a trade center on one of the major routes between Germany and Italy. In the 12th century, it passed under control of the Habsburgs, and in 1477 it was incorporated into Bern. But Fribourg retained its own administrative structure and parliament up to 1848. In 1874, however, it lost its independence to Bern in a referendum.

Fribourg’s economic base has always been based on textiles and related industries, but today it also has a strong pharmaceutical industry. Major tourist attractions include its medieval old town, several churches, and the ruins of an ancient castle.

As the capital of the Swiss canton of Fribourg and home to several art galleries, the city is known for its rich cultural heritage. The city center is quite compact, with most of the main attractions within easy walking distance of one another. The best way to get around is by using the city’s excellent public transport system.

Fribourg is also a popular tourist destination owing to its picturesque medieval cityscape, lakes and mountains. The following maps show some of the more popular tourist attractions in Fribourg:

-The Old Town: This compact area is full of narrow winding streets and alleys with imposing stone buildings dating back to the 13th century. Highlights include the Town Hall, the Dominican Church and the Renaissance-style Merian Library.

-Lake Morat: This picturesque lake occupies a prominent spot in the center of town and offers great views of the surrounding mountains. There are several paths around it that make for nice walks or bike rides.

-The Chapel Bridge: This beautiful bridge spans over a small river next to Lake Morat and has been a favorite attraction for tourists since it was built in 1875. It’s made out.

Freiburg, Germany is a fabulous destination – either as a day trip or a home base to discover more of the region. In fact, we were a bit surprised to find so many fun things to do in Freiburg, Germany – and now we are sharing our list to help fellow travelers discover all the sights, too.

We were lured to Freiburg by the beautiful Black Forest but were equally excited about the historic places to see in Freiburg Old Town. Of course, a trip to Freiburg would not be complete without local fare, so we made room in our Freiburg itinerary to eat classic German food as well.

Best Things To Do in Freiburg, Germany

The first time we heard of Freiburg, Germany was when we were housesitting in Basel, Switzerland . We were looking for an easy and entertaining day trip from Basel – one where we could enjoy the beautiful spring weather, see a few historic sights and have an affordable and delicious meal in a restaurant ( Basel is so expensive! ). Freiburg emerged as a suggested destination. On a sunny day, we traveled from Basel to Freiburg – and discovered 6 of the most fabulous Things To Do in Freiburg im Breisgau!

#1 Visit the Freiburg Munster

Gothic details on Freiburg Minster Cathedral in Freiburg, Germany

The Freiburg Munster – also Freiburg Minster or simply the Freiburg Cathedral – is officially called the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady and it sits at the center of the Freiburg Old Town. The incredibly detailed Gothic cathedral was built from 1200 to 1330 – and visiting the Cathedral should be at the top of your Freiburg to-do list.

Freiburg Cathedral Bell Tower in Freiburg, Germany

The spire reaches 380 feet into the sky and hanging inside are 19 bells (the oldest date to the year 1285). Although Freiburg was heavily bombed in 1944, the church suffered little damage. The church is open (and free); taking a look inside is one of the top things to do in Freiburg, Germany.

Freiburg Cathedral Market

Daily market in Munsterplatz in Freiburg, Germany

The Munstermarkt – or Freiburg Market – takes place in the square surrounding the church, Munsterplatz. One of the free things to do in Freiburg is to peruse the market goods.

Flowers, produce and hand-crafted toys are sold from stalls on both sides of the Cathedral.

On the north side of the church there a long row of vendors selling tasty German sausages.

While shopping – and eating – don’t miss the blazing red Historical Merchant’s Hall – one of the most beautiful buildings in Freiburg – on the south side of the square.

The market in Freiburg is open every morning except on Sundays.

#2 Explore the Freiburg Old Town

Cobblestone street in Old Town, Freiburg, Germany

The city of Freiburg was established as a ‘Fortified Town of Free Citizens’ (a loose translation of the name Freiburg) in the year 1120. Although various rulers and wars have left their mark on the city, a preserved (and in some cases re-created) Old Town occupies the Freiburg center today. Exploring the ancient cobblestone lanes is one of the top Freiburg things to do.

Old Town Freiburg Sights

Crocodile sculpture in stream by Insel in Freiburg, Germany

The historic Old Town is small and walkable, making Freiburg sightseeing simply enjoyable. During our visit we literally stumbled onto many of the Freiburg attractions, but we are listing the ones you really shouldn’t miss.

Freiburg Schwabentor

Tram passing under Schwabentor Tower in Freiburg, Germany

The Schwabentor Tower – or the Swabian Gate – has stood in Freiburg since the year 1250 as part of the city’s fortifications. The gate features a striking clock and two interesting paintings.

On the side of the tower that faces in towards town, there is a picture of a traveling merchant – and the image comes complete with a legend. According to the tale, a man came to Freiburg to buy the town with two barrels of gold. However, when he arrived, he found out his wife had taken the gold and filled the barrels with sand, leaving him to be ridiculed.

On the outside of the tower facing away from the city is a painting of St. George, the Patron Saint of Freiburg.

Inside the Schwabentor Tower is a small museum, Zinnfigurenklause, that features small figurines. It is open in the afternoons, but is closed on Mondays.

Historic Martinstor Tower in Freiburg, Germany

The Martinstor Tower – or Martin’s Gate – is another one of the remaining Freiburg city gates. It officially dates to the year 1238, but research proves that the beams are even older, possibly from the year 1202.

The tower no longer features a painting (it was removed in 1951), but there is a clock, a plaque commemorating the burning of three witches in 1599…and (the unfortunately unmissable) McDonald’s sign.

Freiburg Rathaus

Old Town Hall building on Rathausplatz in Freiburg, Germany

In Freiburg, the Old Town Hall and New Town Hall sit next to each other on a pleasant square, Rathausplatz (Town Hall Square). The New Town Hall was built in the mid-1500s as a duplex house. It was used by the university for 300 years and in 1901 became the New Town Hall.

The bright red Old Town Hall has been owned by the city since the 14th century and features several coats of arms. Part of the famous Freiburg Christmas Market is held on Rathausplatz. (In fact, there are several fantastic European Christmas Markets that take place around the region!)

Augustiner Museum

Visitors looking for things to do in Freiburg on a rainy day can add the Augustiner Museum to their trip itinerary. The small museum is housed in an old monastery and features art works from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. There is a small fee to enter the museum.

Freiburg Bachle

Boy plays in Bachle on spring day in Freiburg, Germany

One of the unusual things to do in Freiburg, Germany is to look for the Freiburg Bachle – which are man-made water channels.

Running along the Old Town lanes, the narrow ditches of steaming water, known as Freiburg Bachle, date to the 13th century. The stream was diverted from the Dreisam River as a source of water to battle fires and provide drink for livestock (but thankfully never for sewage).

When the use for the bachle became obsolete, residents fought to keep the unique system of irrigation. Today, the water is said to keep the town cool in the summer. Kids play with boats in the bachle and, according to legend, anyone who steps in the water is destined to marry a local from Freiburg.

#3 Hike in the Freiburg Black Forest

Hillside vineyards on Schlossberg in Black Forest Freiburg, Germany

Freiburg is nestled at the base of Schlossberg (or Castle Hill), a hill on the western edge of the German Black Forest – which means Freiburg hiking is only steps away from the historic Old Town.

New Observation Tower, Schlossbergturm, in Black Forest Freiburg, Germany

The main Black Forest attractions include paved and dirt trails that crisscross through Schlossberg, leading to scenic viewpoints and castle remains. However, one of the best things to do in the Black Forest is hike to (and up) the Schlossbergturm, a 114-foot-tall observation tower that provides 360-degree views of the region.

Freiburg Old Town Hike to Scholossbergturm

Dirt trail in Schlossberg in Black Forest Freiburg, Germany

We took a break from sightseeing Freiburg and started our Freiburg Black Forest Hike from the southwest corner of Schlossberg (near the Schwabentor Tower). Most of the trails were not marked, but there were picture plaques of the Schlossbergturm with arrows to guide our way.

From Old Town Freiburg, the one-way trek is about 1km and takes about a half hour (longer if you allow time for taking in the views from the two observation decks along the trail).

I completed the hike in flip flops, which isn’t advised. If I had been wearing better shoes, we would have hiked more trails, as the Black Forest was one of our favorite places to visit in Freiburg!

More Things To Do in Freiburg Black Forest

Schlossbergbahn tram to Black Forest in Freiburg, Germany

Visitors who prefer not to hike, but still want to walk in the Black Forest, can take the Schlossbergbahn, a funicular railway that links the Old Town to the forest.

On the other hand, visitors who want a higher Black Forest experience can take the nearby cable car to the top of Schauinsland mountain. From the gondola, there are expansive views across the Rhine Valley.

Freiburg Attractions for Nature

Springtime at Stadtgarten in Freiburg, Germany

Other Freiburg places to visit for a dose of nature – without hiking the Black Forest from Freiburg – are Colombipark, Stadtgarten, Seepark and the Freiburg Botanical Garden.

#4 Stroll the Old Freiburg Cemetery

Old Gravestone in Alter Friedhof cemetery in Freiburg, Germany

Although some may think visiting a cemetery is spooky, visiting the Alter Friedhof (Old Cemetery) is definitely one of the top Freiburg, Germany things to do. The cemetery was used for local burials from 1683 until 1872.

The gravestones range from simple and modest to detailed sculptures. Both the history and the art are what makes the cemetery one of the Freiburg tourist attractions.

Gravestones in overgrown grounds at Alter Friedhof Old Cemetery in Freiburg, Germany

We took our time strolling through the cemetery and looking for dates on the longstanding headstones. We noted how some were crumbling and covered in moss and other graves were in pristine condition.

While we were at Alter Friedhof, we noticed many locals enjoying the cemetery as a park by walking their dogs and having picnic lunches.

#5 Drink Beer at a Freiburg Brewery

Beer at Ganter Brauereiausschank on Munsterplatz in Freiburg, Germany

When in Germany, drink beer. When is Freiburg, drink Freiburg beer! It’s even better if you can drink it outdoors in a classic German beer garden. On our quick trip to Freiburg, we managed to sample Freiburg beers from three Freiburg breweries. Someone has to do it, right?

Hausbrauerei Feierling

Beers in Biergarten at Hausbrauerei Feierling in Freiburg, Germany

Feierling Brewery first opened in 1877 near the current location on Augustinerplatz – and the brewmaster is a 4th generation Feierling. The beer is brewed in-house (tours are available), but the main feature of Hausbrauerei Feierling is the spacious and lively Biergarten.

Ganter Brauereiausschank

Outdoor seating at Ganter Brewery on Munsterplatz in Freiburg, Germany

The Ganter Brewery is a family-run business that was founded in Freiburg in 1865. The brewery, where they offer tours, is on the outskirts of town (which can be easily seen from the top of the Schlossbergturm) – or there is the Ganter Brewery Bar located on Munsterplatz where guests can get a taste of the classic Freiburg Beer in a wonderful setting.

Martin’s Brau

Beers at Martin's Brau in Freiburg, Germany

Martin’s Brew opened in 1989 in the Freiburg Markthalle. In addition to the standard beers produced at Martin’s Brau, they also make small-batch, seasonal specialties.

#6 Eat German Food

Platter of Farmhouse Sausages at Martin's Brau in Freiburg, Germany

What goes best with German beer? German food, of course! And there are many Freiburg, Germany restaurants serving delicious, hearty German meals. Some of the menu items we were searching for while in Freiburg were Brezels (soft pretzels), Spatzle (noodle dish), Flammkuchen (thin pizza) and Sausages with Kraut.

What To Eat in Freiburg

We coordinated our sightseeing in Freiburg, Germany to be at the city center cathedral at lunchtime. We joined both tourists and locals for one of the locally famous ‘Lange Rote’ – a foot-long sausage served in a baguette with sautéed onions – from the food stalls on the north side of the church.

In the early evening, we snacked on brezels while sipping our beers, but were ready for dinner when we sat down at Martin’s Brau. Disappointed to see that Flammkuchen was not on the menu, we opted for the local Spatzle Freiburg-style (with bacon, onions and beer sauerkraut) and farmhouse sausages (because there is no such thing as too many sausages when in Germany) and it was delicious!

Freiburg Markthalle

For visitors who are less enthusiastic about traditional German fare, the Freiburg Markthalle is the place to go to eat international cuisine. With a food court atmosphere, guests can choose from dishes around the world.

Summertime Freiburg visitors can cool down with a sweet treat of ice cream. The best ice cream shop in Freiburg is Eiscafe Portofino, which has been dishing out fresh made scoops of ice cream since 1998.
