Norway Fjord Trekking
The trek was great, we had epic views all week, and our guide, Karl, was very fun and informative.
Magical Fjord Adventure
All arrangements went well. We especially appreciated the stay at Kviknes Hotel in Balestrand with delicious breakfast and dinner buffets included. All in all, the tour was a great choice since our hotels and transportation between places were taken cared of and sightseeing in Norway is easy with the availability of Visitors Centers, convenient transportation systems and tourist friendly options like the Oslo and Bergen passes. This tour option is great way to experience this beautiful country and see it’s major cities, fjords and countryside.

Jann was a fantastic guide / driver who was kind and considerate and wanted the best experience possible for his guests!! Jann was friendly and educated/answered all questions even with personal stories! We were very lucky and had a great viewing night and Jann had prepared us for the post that we would not see anything, would highly suggest the Jann experience to everyone!
What people love about Norwegian Fjords Tours
Active and rewarding trip.
Just finished our tour. Everything went smoothly and the staff at Tour Radar were quick to respond when I had a question while traveling. The hotel rooms in Oslo and Bergen were a bit small. I would recommend the upgrade but the locations and breakfasts in both were excellent. Our favorite hotel, by far, was the Kivnes in Balestrand. Just beautiful and right on the fiord. Thank you Tour Radar!

Day-by-day itinerary
Board an overnight flight to Bergen.
Welcome to Norway! Meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers at tonight’s welcome dinner.
Join a local guide and discover the historic sites in and around Bergen, Norway’s second city and a settlement that was first founded in 1070.
- Walk through Hanseatic-era alleyways and courtyards—and past one of the most famous photo ops in Bergen—in the UNESCO-listed Bryggen harbor district.
- Pass by the 13th-century, stone Bergenhus Fortress and the bustling Fish And Flower Market.
- Hop on the Fløibanen funicular in the city center, then relax and enjoy a remarkable panorama as you climb 1,050 feet above sea level in a matter of minutes. Disembark atop Mount Fløyen and take in more incredible views of Bergen and the surrounding fjords.
Spend a free afternoon in the city or add an excursion.
Bergen Farm Lunch
From $199 per person
Spend the day journeying through Norway’s fjord country, a region of otherworldly natural beauty.
- Journey by train from Bergen to Myrdal.
- In Myrdal, board the historic Flåm Railway for a spectacularly scenic ride down a mountain on one of the steepest tracks in the world, then through the Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in Norway.
- Disembark in tiny Flåm—a picturesque settlement of just 350 people that overlooks dramatic Aurlandsfjord and traces its roots back to the 1300s.
This evening, sit down for an included dinner with your group.
Board a RIB (a rigid inflatable boat) and take to the water on an expertly led safari through the UNESCO-listed Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord—both branches of the mighty Sognefjord.
- Cruise along the dramatic landscape and listen as your guide shares local lore and legends.
- Keep an eye out for wildlife, such as seals, porpoises, and eagles, as you take in the scenery from aboard your boat.
- Take in views of towering waterfalls, including the narrow Sagfossen, and quaint villages; one tiny village you’ll spot, Undredal, is home to roughly 100 people (and 500 goats) and served as inspiration for the animated smash-hit movie Frozen.
Return to Flåm and enjoy a free afternoon or add an excursion. This evening, join your fellow travelers for an included dinner at your hotel.
Please note: You’ll be divided into groups of 12 or fewer people per boat and be provided with a flotation suit, life vest, hat, gloves, and goggles — wearing layers and closed toed shoes are recommended.
Gudvangen Viking Village & Undredal Tasting Tour
From $135 per person
Leave Flåm behind as you take a gorgeous drive inland to the Geirangerfjord region, the crown jewel of the Norwegian fjordlands.
- Head into the 16-mile-long Fjærlandsfjord and stop in its namesake village for some free time. Find a bite to eat for lunch, or do some quick exploring and discover why Fjærland earned its reputation as a book-loving town.
- Forge on to Briksdal Glacier—an arm of the Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier in continental Europe—by way of Troll car. These open-air, off-road buggies take you to within a few hundred meters of Briksdal (and let you take in mountains, waterfalls, lakes, and more impressive scenery along the way).
Later, continue on to your hotel in the Geirangerfjord region and enjoy an included dinner this evening.
Please note: Visiting Briksdal Glacier is only possible from June to October, and it depends on the weather. When it isn’t open, a visit to a stave church will replace Briksdal Glacier and Fjærlandsfjord.
Sail through Norway’s stunning UNESCO-listed fjords today.
- Begin with a stop at the Norwegian Fjord Centre and explore exhibits that demonstrate the geological history and biodiversity of the area. Then, enjoy free time: Grab lunch or explore the outdoor areas around the Centre.
- Venture out onto the Geiranger Skywalk. With a gridded iron floor and glass-walled guard rails, this attraction offers an unparalleled view of the Geirangerfjord and its surrounding scenery—all from a perch on Mount Dalsnibba, almost 5,000 feet in the air.
- Board a sightseeing boat to sail through the Geirangerfjord and take in a host of magnificent waterfalls—like the Seven Sisters, the Bridal Veil, and the Suitor—as they plunge off towering cliffs. And don’t forget to keep a lookout for abandoned mountain farms and gorgeous marine wildlife, like playful porpoises.
Later, sit down for an included dinner at a local restaurant this evening.
Travel along the Trollstigen mountain pass—one of Norway’s most popular, scenic, and thrilling summer driving routes thanks to its mountainous setting and famous hairpin turns—as you make your way to Ålesund. The picturesque port town is known for its panoramic views of the surrounding archipelago and fjords, as well as the art nouveau architectural style in which many of its structures were built following a fire in 1904.
Today, embark on a guided tour of Ålesund, a seaside town spread over several islands that’s rich in Art Nouveau architecture.
- Start with a visit to the Giske archipelago, home to monuments from the Viking and Middle Ages.
- View the 12th-century Giske Church, which was built in the Norman style by an unknown architect and remains the only marble church in all of Norway; its structure presents an even bigger mystery than its creator, as nobody knows the source of the white marble used to build the church.
- Head to the nearby island of Godøya and view the 19th-century Alnes Lighthouse.
- Make your way up Aksla Mountain to Fjellstua, a viewpoint offering sweeping, near-360-degree views of Ålesund and its archipelago below.
- Explore the streets of Ålesund and admire the Art Nouveau architecture, made prevalent after a fire ripped through the town in 1904.
Fly to Oslo in the morning. Then, step inside the Fram Museum to learn about Norway’s storied history of polar exploration through interactive exhibits and other displays. One can’t-miss highlight: the Gjøa, the sloop used by pioneering Arctic explorer Roald Amundsen to complete the first successful transit of the Northwest Passage.
Meet up with your local guide this morning to discover Oslo—the vibrant Norwegian capital and a city that was first settled in the mid-10th century.
- Take a private tour of the Nobel Peace Center. One of the most-visited museums in all of Norway, it occupies a former railway station. Here, through a series of interactive and multimedia exhibits, you’ll learn about the laureates whose tremendous humanitarian efforts helped make the world a better place.
- Walk through Vigeland Park and stroll among over 200 bronze, granite, and cast-iron sculptures created by artist Gustav Vigeland. Known as Frogner Park to the locals, this open-air exhibition doubles as the largest greenspace in all of Oslo.
Spend a free afternoon in Oslo or add an excursion.
Tonight, gather together to celebrate your trip during a farewell dinner.
Oslo Walking Food Tour
From $155 per person
Transfer to the airport for your flight home, or extend your trip to explore Bodø and the Lofoten Islands.
Catch a flight to the town of Bodø this morning, located just north of the Arctic Circle.
Upon arrival, head to the island of Knaplundsøya and check out the Saltstraumen, a small strait that’s home to one of the world’s strongest tidal currents. From the bridge above, you’ll be able to view its impressively strong maelstroms during high tide—whirlpools over 30 feet across and more than 15 feet deep.
Please note: On some departures, the timing of the tides may prevent us from visiting Saltstraumen. If this happens, the activity will be replaced by a visit to the Kjerringøy Trading Post.
Travel by ferry to the Lofoten Islands, a scenic archipelago of seven islands replete with dramatic scenery and boasting a rich cultural heritage.
- Cruise to the island of Moskenes, where you’ll find small, traditional fisherman’s cabins; little islands dotted with homes; and mountains that pitch right into the sea.
- Visit Nusfjord, an authentic fishing village nestled along a secluded bit of coastline on the southern shores of Flakstadøya island.
- Enter the Lofotr Viking Museum. Based on the largest Viking longhouse ever excavated, this exhibition houses unique archaeological finds and demonstrates Viking life as it was in the sixth century. Enjoy a tour of the museum, learning about the area’s history. Step inside the Chieftain’s House—a full-scale reconstruction of the building originally discovered by archaeologists—then enjoy free time on the premises. Finally, sit down to an included lunch.
Continue on to your hotel on the Lofoten Islands and get settled in for the evening.
Enjoy a free morning on the Lofoten Islands or add an excursion.
Later, travel to the fishing village of Henningsvær and take a sightseeing tour of the different islands that make it up.
- Meet up with a local guide and take a walk through town, learning about its maritime past.
- Visit the KaviarFactory, an award-winning contemporary art museum that took up residence in a restored 1950s caviar plant. Its exhibitions and installations feature the work of both Norwegian and international artists, and its bookshop boasts some rare finds.
- Take time to explore the village center, and pop into cafes, bakeries, boutiques, and other interesting spots at your leisure.

- In order to enter Norway, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
- We recommend having at least two blank passport pages for entry stamps.
- Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
- Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
- If you’re not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
- You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code NOR.
- You’ll walk for at least two hours daily across moderately uneven terrain—including wet, slippery gravel; snow; ice; and paved paths with some uphill climbs.
- Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance. Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.
- You should feel comfortable managing your own baggage at times, as well as getting in and out of boats, ferries, and trains.
- If you have any mobility concerns or physical restrictions, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
- Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in Bergen and depart from Oslo. A representative from Go Ahead Tours will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. Please remain in the arrival lounge, as the representative might be escorting one of your fellow travelers to the bus at the time of your arrival.
- Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who have purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who purchase their own flights may request airport transfers from Go Ahead Tours at an additional cost.
- Train rides from Bergen to Myrdal and from Myrdal to Flåm, all fjord cruises, and a flight from Ålesund to Oslo are included in the price of your tour.
- Flights from Oslo to Bodø and from Narvik to Oslo, as well as a ferry ride from Bodø to Moskenes, are included in the price of the tour extension.
- All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.
- Airlines have varying weight restrictions on luggage. Some may impose additional charges if you choose to check any bags; be advised that you’re responsible for any such costs.
- You may contact your airline for detailed information regarding baggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note: Our travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other transfers, which may include train connections or flights.
- One carry-on bag is also permitted, provided that it doesn’t exceed 45 total inches (length + width + height).
- Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
- Temperatures in Norway are often cool, even in summer months, and winters are very cold. Areas along Norway’s coast can be wet, windy, and chilly as well. We suggest packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can easily be layered, as well as a light jacket or rainwear. Avoid wearing cotton whenever possible—it’s an ineffective insulator and retains moisture. Wool, on the other hand, is an effective insulator. We recommend packing wool base layers, socks, and sweaters if you plan to visit during cold winter months.
- A warm, sturdy pair of walking shoes or winter boots is strongly recommended for sightseeing. You may also want to consider bringing ice cleats for better traction.
- You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
- It’s preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders. You may be denied entry if you do.
- Please note: There are often baggage restrictions during internal transfers, including ferry rides and internal flights. We recommend packing light.
- Check with your doctor or healthcare provider, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website at cdc.gov, at least 60 days prior to departure to review the latest updates and entry requirements.
- If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour, as well as any possible delays you may encounter.
- If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
- Norwegian cuisine is varied, offering something for every traveler. Lamb is the most traditional meat, but you’ll also find everything from goose to deer. Seafood lovers will enjoy the country’s array of smoked salmon, shellfish, pickled herring, and scrod. Typical meals often incorporate grains, locally produced cheeses, fresh produce, and wild berries.
- Norway operates on the European standard of 220–240 volts and uses Type C or F plugs with two small, round pins.
- We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other electrical device without a built-in converter.
- The strength of the air conditioning in some European hotels may not be as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it’s usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
- Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
- Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
- There’s no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
- Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
- Norway is one hour ahead of GMT and six ahead of EST.
- The amount of daylight in Norway greatly varies based on the season. Expect as much as 19 hours of daylight in the summer and as little as six in the winter.
- You will use the Norwegian krone on tour.
- Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
- We strongly advise that you bring debit/bank and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks, as needed.
- You can use most debit and credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
- Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
- International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you don’t already have at least one card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
- At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in the local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
- We recommend that each person tips the equivalent of USD$10 to USD$12 per day for your Tour Director, and the equivalent of USD$3 per day for your driver.
- If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of USD$2 per local guide.
- Tips can only be paid in cash.
- Most optional excursions can be purchased while you’re on tour.
- Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for excursions.

Norway in a Nutshell® - Classic
Norway in a nutshell® & northern lights express, fjords & tromsø, express norway, fjord cruise & scenic train journey, norway in a nutshell®- express, other ways to explore the fjords.
Take a trip by car, train or cruise - or a combination of travel modes - to experience the sheer scale and beauty of the Norwegian fjords. These tours showcase the best of western Norway.
Lofoten & the Fjords
Coastal cruise & flåm railway, best of the norwegian fjords – express, geiranger & fjord cruise, classic norway, norway fjord route by car - classic, highlights of the norway in a nutshell tour from oslo.
From Oslo, your journey starts with a train ride on the Bergensbanen (Bergen Line), taking you over the rugged Hardangervidda mountain plateau. From the Myrdal junction , situated 866 metres above sea level, your tour continues on the famous Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana).
This popular train trip offers breathtaking scenery as its vintage rail cars weave their way down the mountains on a 20-kilometre journey to the idyllic fjord village of Flåm , with a stop for a photo at the dazzling Kjosfossen waterfall .
Another of the best Norway in a Nutshell tour highlights is the 2-hour fjord cruise from Flåm to Gudvangen. Sailing on an open-deck ferry, you’ll glide between the steep mountainsides of the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord .
From Gudvangen, you’ll transfer from boat to coach bus for the next leg of the journey. In Voss, you’ll reconnect to the Bergen Railway for the final part of your scenic journey to Bergen.

Customised fjord tours including Norway in a Nutshell
The Norway in a Nutshell journey can be done in one day, but of course you will want to have extra days in your tour so you can enjoy the vast array of attractions in Oslo and all the historic sites in Bergen . In as little as 4 days you can enjoy an express round-trip from Oslo on the Norway in a Nutshell tour, with an overnight in Bergen, but for the best experience we recommend around 6 days for the classic round-trip , with a night in Flåm added to your itinerary.
Want to book a Norway in a Nutshell tour with some side trips or other customisations? Nordic Visitor specialises in creating bespoke tour packages in Norway , so our local travel experts can easily modify an itinerary to your interests.
For example, we can start your Norway in a Nutshell tour from Bergen instead of Oslo or, with at least 11 days to travel in Norway, we can combine a trip to Geirangerfjord and a Norway in a Nutshell tour in one package for you. Another popular addition we offer is an extended train journey south to Stavanger, with the possibility of a day tour to the famous Pulpit Rock .
Why not add a cruise to your Norway in a Nutshell itinerary and see even more fjords? A cruise along the west coast from Bergen is a wonderful extension to any train tour package in Norway.

The reviews speak for themselves. See what Nordic Visitor travellers said about their experience with us.
Fantastic trip
An absolutely fantastic trip to a beautiful country.
Excellent tour
The service and communication before the trip was very good, and the tour itself excellent. Hotels were very well-chosen. They were a good standard and ideally situated.
Well-planned itinerary
We found the process for enquiry, booking and recommendations quite easy and very informative. Tour was absolutely great. Well-planned itinerary.
Exceeded expectations
Great choice of accommodation! They exceeded expectations with first-class hotels and more.
Great way to plan a vacation
Nordic Visitor is a great way to plan a vacation to Scandinavia. They offer multiple options in each country, then you can customise as you want by adding a day in a city, or adding excursions. They know all the best options to make available and do a thorough job of preparing every leg of your journey. It was great to have a personal driver meet us at the airport to take us to our hotel in Oslo. Saved lots of concern about navigating public transportation in another country.
Excellent company!
Excellent company to work with! We were able to customise our tour and received detailed information ahead of time so we could make an informed decision about our options. The information packet we recieved ahead of the trip was extremely detailed and included everything we needed to make our trip go smoothly. The hotels were all outstanding as were all the tours and modes of transportation. Nordic Visitor knows the best places and things to do in Norway and saved us hours of planning and researching. We would highly recommend them for your travel!
This was the most amazing opportunity to experience different parts of the country. We experienced "different seasons" with the changing climate throughout the locations travelled. We experienced the different cultures of city vs. country living. We were able to talk with locals and learn about the history of Norway. It was a packed holiday between the driving, tours and exploring, but we felt we got a full immersive opportunity by choosing this package.
The itinerary was perfect
We booked the Best of Norway Fjords Express Tour. The itinerary was perfect and well-organised. All accommodations were very close to train stations or cruise ports. The transfers involved minimal wait time between bus and train on the same day. The accommodation, transportation and tours would have been very difficult to book on our own. Nordic Visitor did a great job putting everything together.
Very pleased
We were very pleased with all the arrangements and information. We were able to follow all the instructions easily.
The trip of a lifetime!
This was the trip of a lifetime. Norway is unbelievably beautiful and this trip with Nordic Visitor was amazing! The fjords were spectacular and the Norwegian towns and landscapes were charming. Our small group of 14 (plus the driver and tour guide) was perfect. Our group included people from the USA, Hong Kong and Australia, and all were very friendly and interesting. A perfect tour!
Well-organised
From start to finish, well organised. Good communication pre-travel and all reservations on the trip went smoothly.
Very well-executed
All organised items were very well-executed and we had no trouble making connections and finding hotels, etc. Nordic Visitor organised accommodation that was very close to transport, where possible, so less chance of us getting lost.

Svalbard, Norway
Exploring the svalbard archipelago in the "land of the midnight sun".
The otherworldly, glacier-carved landscapes of Norway's Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean – of which Spitsbergen is the largest island – are home to the largest concentration of polar bears in the world… around 3,000 of them! Our small-ship cruise, "Arctic Allure: Spitsbergen and the Midnight Sun, takes you to explore the archipelago's jagged mountains, steep-sided valleys, sheer cliffs, fjords, calving glaciers that crackle and groan, and the remains of old whaling outposts and mining camps established by Norwegians, Americans and Russians over a century ago. Keep your eyes open for some of those polar bears… as well as bearded seals, blue and white whales, Arctic foxes, and Arctic moose.
Exploring the Arctic region
Above the arctic circle, in the "land of the midnight sun".
As you cruise along the coast of Spitsbergen in the Arctic Ocean, you'll encounter islands of glaciers, fjords, and natural "ice sculpture," revered for their silent majesty. Here, in the "Land of the Midnight Sun" (north of the Arctic Circle, where at certain times of the year the sun remains visible at the local midnight), your daily itinerary is flexible – go where the weather and movement of wildlife tell you to go, seeking Svalbard reindeer, polar bears, walruses, whales, Arctic foxes, red-throated divers, pink-footed geese, and more. Expedition naturalists accompany you throughout your voyage, enjoying a camaraderie that only Arctic explorers can share... as close as you can get to the North Pole!

The magical fjords of Norway
Your breath will leap right off the edge of those steep, steep cliffs
- Newsletter sign up Newsletter
The fjords of Norway — all 1,000 of them — are majestic. That is the simplest, most straightforward way to put it. The long, narrow sea inlets are surrounded by dramatically steep cliffs, often best viewed from the water while gliding by on a ferry or kayak. Fjords can be found in all corners of the country, but to see some of the most stunning examples, visit the western part of the nation, known as Fjord Norway.
Geirangerfjord
Geirangerfjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with Naeroyfjord
All you have to do is see a photo of Geirangerfjord to understand why this is among the most visited spots in Norway. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the natural wonder "inspires with its deep, blue water ringed by sky-grazing snow-capped peaks, gushing waterfalls and green vegetation," Travel + Leisure said. For spectacular views, take a ferry ride past the Seven Sisters and Suitor waterfalls and drive up the windy road to Mt. Dalsnibba. There, you will find the Geiranger Skywalk , where visitors can take in unobstructed views of the fjord.
Hardangerfjord
Norway's most visited waterfall is the Voringfossen
Often referred to as the Kingdom of Waterfalls, Hardangerfjord is home to Norway's crown jewel, the mighty Voringsfossen . This is the country's most famous waterfall, and after witnessing its power, be sure to also visit Steinsdalsfossen, where you can walk on a pathway behind the water, and Latefossen , a twin waterfall that plunges toward an old stone bridge. Hardangerfjord has another claim to fame: apples. Orchards thrive here because of the region's comparatively mild winters, and visitors can stop by farms on the Fruit and Cider Route in Ulvik to pick up produce, juice and ciders.

Hundreds of thousands of people visit Preikestolen every year
Lysefjord is a playground for mountain hikers. Opportunities abound, from the strenuous climb up to Kjerag, the highest peak in Lysefjord, to the popular trek to Preikestolen (The Pulpit Rock). From here, you can gaze down at the Lysefjord below, a view made even more special when hiking in for sunrise. If that is not enough to get your heart pumping, take a ferry to the village of Florli and ascend the world's longest wooden stairway — a 4,444 step journey up a mountain. There is also a wood-fired hot tub, filled with fresh fjord water, in Florli that visitors can rent .
Naeroyfjord
Ferries have to carefully maneuver through the narrow Naeroyfjord
Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Naeroyfjord is often included in the "Norway in a Nutshell" itinerary for travelers on a time crunch who want to see as many fjords as possible. This narrow fjord — at some points, it is only about 820 feet wide — can be traversed on electric boats, which stop at some of the tiny villages that dot the landscape. Bakka is one of those remote communities, where visitors often become enchanted by the serene views and historic wooden buildings. The centerpiece is the Bakka Church , built in 1859 and still hosting services during the summer.
Sognefjord is 120 miles long and about one mile deep
As the longest and deepest fjord in Norway, Sognefjord reigns supreme. Known as The King of the Fjords, it has several side branches (like Naeroyfjord) and is home to more than 19 tiny, charming villages. Sognefjord "offers Norway's best combination of scenic wonder and accessibility," legendary travel writer Rick Steves said, and is in a "relative sun belt, with only two feet of rain a year." Hikers should plan to spend a day or two in the Aurlandsdalen Valley, a scenic region often described as Norway's answer to the Grand Canyon. For a quick side trip, visit Fjaerland on Fjaerlandsfjord. This is a book town , where tomes can be encountered or purchased everywhere from banks to bus stops.

Exploring the Fjords of Norway: A Naturalist's Dream
A h, the fjords of Norway-those deep, meandering inlets carved by ancient glaciers that leave every visitor in awe. If you're a nature lover, an adventure junkie, or just someone who appreciates breathtaking scenery, planning a trip to explore these geological wonders might just be your perfect getaway. However, before you add the fjords to your bucket-list, there are a few things that you should be aware of first. Here's everything you need to know to make the most out of your visit.
The Majesty of the Fjords
First, let's take a closer look at what the Norwegian fjords actually are. Imagine sailing through waters that are a deep shade of blue, flanked by immense cliffs that rise almost vertically from the water's edge. This is the landscape that we're talking about here. Shaped by ice ages, where glaciers slowly carved out deep valleys that later filled with seawater. Two of the most notable examples are the Sognefjord-the longest and deepest fjord in Norway-and the Geirangerfjord, known for its dramatic waterfalls and pristine surroundings. However, these two are just the tip of the iceberg (pun intended!).
A Haven for Wildlife
It's not just the landscape that makes this place so magical. It's also the exceptionally diverse wildlife ! Depending on where you are, you might spot otters playing along the shores, or seals lounging on rocks. The waters are rich with marine life-perfect for a bit of fishing or bird watching, as the cliffs provide nesting grounds for birds such as puffins and eagles. Every turn and every season brings something new for wildlife enthusiasts to discover.
The fjord’s lush surroundings are characterized by dense forests of pine and birch, interspersed with patches of Arctic tundra . These forests are not only absolutely beautiful to look at and walk in, but are home to an array of smaller fauna such as squirrels, hares, and a variety of birds. The ground layer is rich with mosses, lichens, and wild berries, including cloudberries, bilberries, and lingonberries. So depending on the season that you're visiting, you could experience something different each time. Which is the perfect excuse to visit the Norwegian fjords more than once!
Active Adventures
Now that you know what you can expect to see in the Norwegian fjords, let's explore everything that you will be able to do! To sum things up - pretty much anything. Because this is the perfect destination for any type of traveler. From the ones who enjoy slow vacation days filled with leisurely walks, to the ones who prefer to get their heart rate up and boost their adrenaline levels.
The fjords offer some of the world’s most picturesque hiking spots, no matter where your activity levels are at. Trails range from easy walks to challenging treks, like the famous Trolltunga or the more accessible Romsdalseggen. Kayaking along the fjord's calm waters is another way to get up close and personal with the stunning surroundings. And let's not forget winter sports-come snowfall, the region is perfect for skiing, snowshoeing, and more.
The fjords are rich in marine life, making fishing another popular activity. You can fish from the shore or head out on a guided fishing trip to deeper waters. Common catches include cod, pollock, and mackerel. For those who prefer a more relaxed way to see the fjords, a fjord cruise is an excellent option. These cruises can vary in length from a few hours to several days, depending on your interests and budget. And finally, don't forget your camera! Because even amateur photographers will be able to shoot spectacular photos here!

How to Visit Oslo, According to Someone Who Spent 6 Years in Scandinavia
Oslo, Norway, is a year-round destination — with saunas, fjord cruises, and fascinating museums.
Best Hotels and Resorts
Best things to do, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, best neighborhoods.
Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure
The mere idea of a summer day in a place like Oslo — home to subzero waters and black-metal music — might seem like a mirage. But the summers here are famously light and hot, with the Norwegian capital being an ideal playground for sunbathing, swimming, fishing, and hiking, replacing the darker months’ skiing, ice bathing, and roaring fireplaces.
Beyond its outdoor pursuits, Oslo 's eco-conscious efforts exceed most cities. In 2016, it introduced a “climate budget” with a goal of reducing emissions by 95 percent by 2030; two years later, 1,000 trees were planted for the Future Library project ; and in 2019, the city was crowned the European Green Capital .
Oslo’s young professionals and creatives may scatter themselves among the hip, diverse neighborhoods of Grünerløkka and Tøyen, or the more upscale Frogner and St. Hanshaugen (picture Parisian-like facades and tree-lined streets with mansions), but the main thing this city’s dwellers have in common is their commitment to time spent in nature. Visitors will find eco-friendly hotels committed to eliminating waste and championing reusable materials, restaurants that support third-world communities, and spas and saunas dispersed between the city’s central harbor and the dense surrounding forest.
At a time when travelers are becoming aware of how their leisure choices impact the environment, it’s interesting to see Oslo’s dedication to learning about and introducing the bigger ideas behind eco work. September’s Oslo Innovation Week, for example, is largely digital, with the aim of solving real global challenges through entrepreneurship, innovation, and green tech — the subjects of its panels include energy, circular economy, and life-science investment. For anyone interested in such, its panels and events make it a good time to visit.
For me, having spent six years in Scandinavia, and long summers and winters in Norway , Oslo became a base for months at a time. Most favor Danish and Swedish coastal cities for their accessibility. Like any capital, the Norwegian city is fast-changing and home to global diasporas that help shape the identity of this fjord-laden delight.
Top 5 Can’t Miss
- Any trip to Oslo calls for a bracing ice dip and sauna session.
- History buffs might note the elaborate original fixtures of Sommerro, a former electricity factory
- Restaurant Alex is the newest place to see and be seen, yet it's ultra-welcoming.
- Marvel at Vigeland, a park displaying nude sculptures.
- Go cross-country skiing or hiking, or simply enjoy the view from the top, at Nordmarka.
Francisco Nogueira
Not long after Sommerro's fall 2022 opening, the hotel and spa made its way on Travel + Leisure' s list of the 100 best new hotels in the world . Its electricity factory history is felt while the mid-century interior design and moody lighting offer a polished feel. The 231 rooms of various sizes include annexes, sloped ceilings, and exquisite upholstery, plus top-tier amenities and service. Don't miss the newly opened Izakaya, which serves a Nordic-Japanese menu.
Villa Inkognito
The next-door sibling property of Sommerro, Villa Inkognito is housed in a former private residence dating back to 1870. It was transformed into offices for the city’s first electrical company, and later served as the Algerian embassy. The 11-room retreat is also available on a full buyout basis for an ultra-special trip, and each room is meant to feel like a home away from home.
Amerikalinjen
This revved-up former Norwegian America Line headquarters toots its own stylish horn. The cheery staff resurrects the bustling energy of the storied spot , which is decked out in snappy tailoring from Norwegian fashion favorite Holzweiler. Guests can also expect a chic library, original elevators, and ceiling stuccos that remain across the rooms.
The Well Spa & Hotel
The Well Spa & Hotel provides a holistic approach to health — meaning uniform bathing suits and gowns, a zero-digital policy in restaurants and communal areas, excellent menus, relaxing treatments, and a decidedly tranquil feel in the stunning sculpture garden. Located in Sofiemyr, about 20 minutes from Oslo's city center via its own shuttle, the impressively vast property makes for a divine solo sojourn or a social spa trip.
Clarion Hotel The Hub
Located close to Oslo Central Station, Clarion Hotel The Hub stands out with its magnificent lobby showcasing marble features, a sumptuous bar, and refurbished rooms.
Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure
With rugged natural terrain skirting the entire city, it’s no wonder most extra-curricular activities here revolve around getting outdoors. A winding, 20-minute tram ride up Nordmarka takes visitors to the place where the trees for Future Library are planted. Take the lift to ski jump Holmenkollen, then stop by Holmenkollen Restaurant for tartare, a hot toddy, and mountaintop views.
Sauna and Swim
In the winter, the adrenaline rush is rewarding, and come summer, the waters are refreshing. At Badstuforening , it's $25 for a two-hour communal seat; enjoy the peaceful camaraderie (and views) of this sweet setup. Just make sure to bring a towel. Alternatively, try Salt , a sauna and art space that's set opposite the Snøhetta-designed opera house and hosts concerts, plays, and exhibitions.
Museum Hopping
Explore the intricate history of explorer life at the Fram , which contains the reconstructed remnants of the ship that raced to the South Pole, headed by Norwegian adventurer Roald Amundsen. In the center of town, check out the Nobel Peace Center for its permanent and roving collections of significant human rights accomplishments. An unsung gem is the Emanuel Vigeland Museum , complete with frescoes and gong bath concerts. Tip: Plan in advance planning due to the location's unusual opening hours.
Silent Fjord Cruise
Take a silent electric fjord tour on the Brim Explorer , with multiple options to suit your mood. There’s yoga on the deck, an elegant brunch, or a dinner cruise. Other perks of this slick and small liner include less crowds and an intimate setting for your crew.
Courtesy of Restaurant Alex
Restaurant Alex
An overnight success with everyone from students to billionaires, this restaurant calls for advance reservations. Emerging chef Alexandra Ek guides a well-priced brasserie-style menu, while the resident DJs don’t frown upon dancing on tables after hours.
Sabi Omakase
Japanese cuisine this far from East Asia has a terrific head start thanks to the abundance of cold sea. At Sabi Omakase , guests can expect a carefully composed seasonal menu that's served in a harmonious, low-lit space. Interestingly, the chef used to be a surgeon — the locale and its offerings are not remiss of precision, and, yes, you’re safe in his hands.
Solsiden Restaurant
Solsiden is a fail-safe institution for seafood on the water, dapper and light-filled with its glass structure. Put on a pretty dress or shirt and enjoy the harbor breeze at this summer-only restaurant. Order the renowned shellfish tower and the Champagne.
It’s no secret Norway can whip the wallet. This fresh and lovely Asian noodle joint is a way of preserving splurges for another day while still giving you the opportunity to eat well. Plus, every purchase feeds a child in Africa, where founder André Evju spent lots of time.
Plant-filled with kitschy white tiles and pink lighting, Njokobok offers Senegal-style community dining. Order the jollof rice, grilled dorada, or whole lamb and indulge in the location's famous onion sauce three ways. Oslo has a sizable African diaspora, so you'll find good Ethiopian, Eritrean, Moroccan, and Somali restaurants throughout the city.
Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure
While winter is for snow and snuggles, summer in Oslo is all about swimming and seafood.
Spring (or shoulder season), meanwhile, is ideal for soaking up art, history, opera, and the boutique shops. June through September sees music festivals such as By:Larm and Øya , and winter is prime time for ski tournaments, cozying up in a cabin, and cold-weather rituals like ice bathing and relaxing in a sauna.
The main thing to consider is winter's darkness — there are nearly 20 hours under cover, compared to summer’s two-hour nights.
Flying into Gardermoen is ideal for easy access into the city — it's about 20 minutes via speed train. Arriving at another airport means a long bus ride to the city, so don't be duped by the cheaper inter-European flights to Torp Sandefjord Airport. Another way to arrive is by cruise — check out eco operators such as Hurtigruten. You might also consider the spectacular, nearly eight-hour, cross-country Bergen Line route — often dubbed one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. If you're arriving from elsewhere in the country, domestic airline Widerøe is a great option.
Andrea Pistolesi/Getty Images
This east-of-central pocket is having a resurgence, thanks to the introduction of some trendy bars and restaurants, but its leafy, suburban feel is enduring. In addition to its waterside location, there are gorgeous local bistros, Frogner Church, grand foreign embassies, and lots of indie cinemas here. Plus, you're still a stone's throw from the theaters, palace, Litteraturhuset (House of Literature), and Vigelandsparken (Vigeland sculpture park).
The peninsula of Bygdøy has not only amassed some of the capital’s best museums and relics, but it’s also home to idyllic beaches — Huk, Paradisbukta, and Bygdøy Sjøbad — for swimming and picnicking. For something a bit more cultural, browse the collections at the Fram, Norwegian Maritime Museum, Oscarshall, or Norwegian Museum of Cultural History. The Gol Stave church is also a must-see.
Day Trip to Drøbak
The wider area of Oslofjord is full of small towns, and picturesque-as-they-come Drøbak is a wonderful jaunt for the day. Just a 40-minute drive (or 90-minute scenic ferry ride) outside of Oslo, Drøbak is home to the dramatic Oscarsborg Fortress , great shellfish in cute old buildings, a summertime opera, and even a quirky year-round Christmas shop.
How to Get Around
Once you arrive in Oslo via the Flytoget airport transfer, walking is doable and preferable to most. An Oslo Pass is handy for riding the tram, train, bus, and ferry. E-scooters can be less arduous than biking if you need to dash somewhere, but locals prefer a more relaxed and measured approach to getting around.

To make the most of what each locale has to offer, shore excursions will be active, and you will often be spending much of the day off the ship. If you rely on a cane or walker, you may not be able to visit all sites on the program. Many historic buildings do not have elevators. Excursions will also involve standing, often in the warm sun. On board the Exploris One , an elevator connects all passenger decks. The ship does not have facilities for wheelchair-dependent passengers; there is no wheelchair-accessible cabin nor chair lift on board. Aboard ship, you should feel comfortable walking on a rocking surface at times. You will need to climb into and out of Zodiac inflatable tenders for some shore excursions (staff and crew will be on hand to assist). You do not have to participate in all scheduled activities, except when traveling to the next destination.
