On l'écoute.

Mercuriales towers Paris Bagnolet

A3 motorway, ring road - a major axis near Paris

Bagnolet adjoins Paris, just separated by a ring road. Porte de Bagnolet is an important transport link crossing the motorway A3 junction. The Gallieni metro station is close to several hotels , a shopping mall, an ideal option a few steps from Paris !

Visit Bagnolet…industrial heritage and film locations

Moulinex factory, located at N° 11-13 rue Jules Ferry was established in 1932 with the first workshop producing vegetable-blenders. Visit the Flemish style house next to Jules Ferry school at 27-29 rue Paul Bert; take rue de L’Avenir, a reminiscent passage of the old Bagnolet. Stroll around Rue de la Liberté and rue de la Fraternité. Going up the “Ravins and Guilands” pathways, you will see an unusual display of gardens and small houses. Take a look at “Maison de la Tourelle” late nineteenth century, a brick building which can be seen in the film “Tenue de soirée” a 1986 French comedy-drama directed by Bertrand Blier.

Go off the beaten path to discover rue Blanche and the path “Fosse aux fraises” that will take you to Jean Moulin Departmental park built on top of old quarries. In 1989, a French sculpter Ipoustéguy designed a monumental bronze sculpture “A la santé de la Révolution” . Between the old fortifications and the center of Bagnolet there used to be “a zone” of adventure playgrounds and Guinguettes. Amélie Elle, known as “Casque d’Or” lived in this place. She inspired the French filmmaker, Jacques Becker and her role was played by Simone Signoret. She was buried in the town cemetery but the grave no longer exists.

Nature and architecture

Walk over the bridge to rue Charles-Delescluze, turn left on to rue du Général Leclerc, you will find yourself in “Jardin des Buttes”. There you will find a beehive of thirty swarms which produces more than one ton of honey each year. In the background, the Mercurial towers,  designed by the American architect Wriley (1975). Not far away, le clos à pêches , a fully developed ancient gardening technique dating back to the sixteenth century that allowed peaches to grow up against a wall of lime plaster. The microclimate obtained and the careful seed selection as well as an almost “jealous” nurturing of the fruit makes it possible to obtain high quality fruit. There is a branch with peaches on the city coat of arms.

Walking through rue Raoul-Berton, you will arrive at rue Sadi-Carnot, a former high street. La maison du Cardinal Du Perron from the 16th century is located at N° 43. Plaster-made houses at 28, 32, 60 are some of the horticulturists old houses. N° 47 was where the first school was built by the city council in 1842.

On rue Sadi-Carnot you will see the castle “Chateau de L’Etang”, a large town house, built in 1860 which is now a childcare centre. There is a garden where you can go for a picnic under the shade of two centenarian purple beech trees and the black mulberry tree. Take a walk along rue du Pinacle towards the home gardens. At N° 2 rue Danton, you will find the art metal working factory ; Moliere, César’s and Victoires de la musique trophies come from this art foundry.

Saint-Leu Saint-Gilles church: a 16th century building

At the level of Sadi Carnot Street, you will arrive at the church of Saint Leu Saint Gilles the oldest building in the city (16th and 18th centuries) Saved from ruin after major restoration, the church was re-opened on December 17th 2000. Restoration inside the building was completed in May 2013 to allow for ten large paintings to be exhibited on the walls and 14 restored stained-glass windows now give new light in the church. Opening days to the public: Thursdays from 10a.m to 12 am - 12.30 to 6 p.m. Sundays 10 to 3pm except during services in the late morning in French and Polish.

La Campagne à Paris: The Countryside in the 20th Arrondissement

By: Author Sophie Nadeau

When it comes to exploring the City of Light, there’s the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower, and every other large monument you could hope to imagine. However, what even many residents don’t know is that there are a plethora of hidden gems in the form of secret villages which were once thriving communities in their own right but have since been absorbed into the fabric of Paris, such as that of La Campagne à Paris .

La Campagne à Paris: The Countryside in the 20th Arrondissement, Paris, France

Of course, I’m sure you’ve already heard of the most famous of the lost villages of Paris ! After all, right up until the 19th-century, Montmartre was a village in its own right, complete with farmland and plenty of moulins (that’s windmills in English) . Today, just a handful of windmills remain and there’s just one vineyard left!

Luckily for us, there are lesser-known spots where you can still see the Parisian villages of old. Today, we’re going for a walk of the most secluded of these. Tucked away in the 20th arrondissement of the city, far off the beaten tourist track and up one of three incredibly steep sets of steps, so quiet is this oasis of calm that if you stop and pause, you can even hear birdsong…

La Campagne à Paris: The Countryside in the 20th Arrondissement, Paris, France

History of La Campagne à Paris

Quite literally translated as ‘the countryside in Paris,’ this micro-arrondissement is constituted of purely residential buildings. And not your typical Haussmannian style structures either.

Instead, the housing is largely two and three-storey buildings and there’s no shop, monument, or attraction in sight! Most houses even have their own gardens, which is a luxury seldom found in the city.

Accessed via one single road or several steep flights of steps, once at the top of this mini ‘butte’ you’ll soon discover four roads which form a circle of sorts and as such comprise of La Campagne à Paris. The area, much like Villa Leandré in the 18th arrondissement of the city, was in the 1920s, specifically 1928 on top of former underground quarries.

La Campagne à Paris: The Countryside in the 20th Arrondissement, Paris, France

How to visit La Campagne à Paris

For those not in the know, the Parisian area can be a little tricky to find! The closest metro station is Métro Porte de Bagnolet, located on line 3. Alternatively, the picturesque village can also be reached via tram Porte de Bagnolet, Porte de Vincennes or by bus (76, 102, 351) .

In total there are 92 townhouses, while the streets which make up the small area are Rue du Père Prosper Enfantin, Rue Irénée Blanc, Rue Mondonville, and Rue Jules Siegfried. As such, for the best directions, I recommend popping one of these into your map application and following the route (otherwise you’re as likely to get as lost as I did!) .

La Campagne à Paris: The Countryside in the 20th Arrondissement, Paris, France

If you have a little more time to spare while in Paris and you’ve seen all the major districts and monuments, then I couldn’t recommend heading to this secluded oasis of calm more. Best visited on a sunny day when the streets look their best and the birds are quite literally singing, this area of the city never really tends to get busy.

If you’re visiting Paris in fall, then you’ll soon discover that due to the number of foliage and trailing vines, the beauty of this small area of the city truly becomes more magical, with fall tones and even more ample photo opportunities.

Before visiting, note that La Campagne à Paris is an actual district of the 20th arrondissement and is not to be confused with a nearby shop which is also called La Campagne à Paris . As of 2021, the shop La Campagne à Paris (address 210 Rue des Pyrénées) is permanently closed.

La Campagne à Paris: The Countryside in the 20th Arrondissement, Paris, France

If you have a little more time while in the area, then you should note that there are plenty more unusual things to do and hidden attractions. For example, the nearby Village of Charonne is another of the forgotten village vibe areas of Paris with the kind of small-town stores to match.

Otherwise, Pere Lachaise cemetery, where the likes of Oscar Wilde and Edith Piaf are buried, is just a short stroll away. What’s more, Pavilion Hermitage is a nearby stunning building surrounded by its own beautifully manicured garden which hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year ( find further details here ) .

I found this neighborhood quite by accident the other week. I was riding around looking for Space Invader art (what a geek) and I happened upon this street that was just out of place it was fabulous. Nice post!

Thanks! I hope you enjoyed the micro-arrondissement- it's super cool!

Taylor Swift's European Eras Tour leg kicked off in Paris with a new setlist. See which songs are in and out.

May 9, 2024 / 8:24 PM EDT / CBS/AFP

Taylor Swift fever struck Paris on Thursday as the highest-grossing tour in history finally arrived in Europe, with fans treated to the first-ever performance of songs from her latest album.

The Eras Tour began its European leg with four dates at the La Defense Arena in Paris.

"I wish I could have toured Europe more. This is a dream crowd," the 34-year-old megastar told the ecstatic audience.

There were deafening shrieks as images of typewriter sheets indicated that songs off the new album "The Tortured Poets Department" were starting late in the show.

Emerging in a lyrics-covered dress, she ran through several of the darker new tracks starting with "But Daddy I Love Him" and "Fortnight", a particularly furious rendition of "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" and an elaborate "I Can Do it with a Broken Heart," with a golden-era Hollywood dance routine.

Other "The Tortured Poets Department" songs performed included "So High School," "Down Bad" and "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived," according to ETonline .

"You were the first crowd to see songs from 'The Tortured Poets Department'," she said, before adding: "Or, as I like to call it, 'Female Rage: the Musical.'"

That was a dream come true for many in the audience.

"I've been so excited for so long, I can't believe it's actually happening," said 11-year-old Emma, who had flown in with her mother from New York.

Adding songs from "The Tortured Poets Department" wasn't the only change to the show and its 45-song setlist.

Perhaps the biggest change, according to ETonline, is the "Folklore" and "Evermore" setlists were combined, cutting four songs across the two albums: "'Tis the Damn Season," "Tolerate It," "The 1" and "The Last Great American Dynasty."

"On the Eras Tour, we have now reunited the sisters, combined them into one chapter," Swift said, according to video posted to social media. "You can call it "Folklore, Evermore" or you can call it the Sister Albums! You can call it whatever you want as long as you promise to sing 'Champagne Problems' with me."

"The Archer" was removed from the "Lovers" portion of the show and "Long Live" was cut from the "Speak Now" era setlist, according to ETonline.

One of the secret songs was, fittingly, the "Midnights" bonus track "Paris."

Parts of the show were also rearranged to make room for the newest era. The "Red" era was moved from the fifth to the third slot, according to ETonline, and the newest album was introduced following the "1989" set.

The venue said a fifth of the crowd were from the United States — many attracted by Europe's rules against charging huge mark-ups on resale tickets that can save Americans thousands of dollars compared with shows at home.

Georg'Ann Daly decided to celebrate her 23rd birthday with the Paris show. It meant flying from Nashville to Chicago to London and catching the Eurostar to Paris.

"I've always been obsessed with Taylor Swift," she told AFP.

A handful of superfans camped out from Tuesday in Paris to ensure they got a prime spot.

"I didn't plan to, but I came to check it out and I saw the first tents and I panicked a little," said Chris, 30.

Noah, 20, is seeing all four Paris concerts — he used 22 email addresses to get through the lottery system and secure the tickets.

FRANCE-MUSIC-AUDIENCE-TAYLOR-SWIFT

After wrapping up her run in Paris, Swift will head for dates in Sweden, Portugal, Spain, Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Poland and Austria.

The Eras Tour has worked its way across North and South America and Asia since starting in March 2023.

By the end of the year, it had already become the first to sell more than $1 billion in tickets and is on track to more than double that by the time it concludes in Vancouver this December.

Swift's popularity shows no sign of dimming — the new album sold 1.4 million copies on its first day and broke every streaming record , reaching a billion streams on Spotify within five days.

Swift's tell-all dissections of her love stories have been the fuel powering her global domination, and fans have been poring over "The Tortured Poets Department" for cryptic clues about ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, her short-but-dramatic fling with Matty Healy (lead singer of The 1975), and her current partner, American football star Travis Kelce.

"Taylor talks about toxic relationships, impossible love, politics, mental health, and so much more," said Chris as she waited by her tent for the big moment. "I think we can all find a song that resonates with our experiences."

Thanks so much to everyone who followed the blog, to the fans in Paris who shared their thoughts throughout the day and to the readers who sent tips. It’s been a memorable evening.

Special thanks to the Guardian’s head of digital (live) Claire Phipps , a fellow Swiftie.

The missing songs

To make way for seven new performances of songs from The Tortured Poets Department, some songs that previously were staples of the Eras tour weren’t there tonight and presumably have now disappeared from the setlist … for now.

The Archer (from Lover era)

Long Live (from Speak Now era)

the last great american dynasty (from folklore era)

’tis the damn season (from evermore era)

tolerate it (from evermore era)

Thanks to Phoebe Woodward for compiling this list.

Fans will certainly be analysing this evening’s performance for some time.

New setlist, new performances, new outfits – while some songs were cut.

First Europe show ends

“I love you so much,” Taylor tells the crowd in the Paris arena, closing the first night of the Europe leg of her Eras tour, where she revamped her setlist and performed new music for the first time.

Taylor is singing Karma.

‘Cause karma is my boyfriend Karma is a god Karma is the breeze in my hair on the weekend Karma’s a relaxing thought Aren’t you envious that for you it’s not? Sweet like honey, karma is a cat Purring in my lap ‘cause it loves me Flexing like a goddamn acrobat Me and karma vibe like that

We’re on the last song :(

“This has been an unforgettable night in Paris, we love you so much!” Taylor tells the audience.

We’re close to the end of the show…

Taylor is now singing Mastermind. Love these lyrics:

What if I told you none of it was accidental And the first night that you saw me, nothing was gonna stop me? I laid the groundwork and then, just like clockwork The dominoes cascaded in a line

“So on the weekends She don’t dress for friends Lately she’s been dressing for revenge”

She’s moved to Vigilante Shit.

And here’s footage from the earlier TTDP set:

Midnight Rain is up now.

“It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me At tea time, everybody agrees I’ll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror It must be exhausting always rooting for the anti-hero”

Madonna is sticking with her “ride or dies.”

The pop icon, 65, who held a free concert at the Copacabana Beach for her final Celebration Tour stop over the weekend, shared her tour memories on Instagram on Wedneday, May 8, which included snaps of her children.

“My RIde………….,” Madonna wrote on her Instagram Stories across a black and white photo of her walking behind her son David Banda, 18, in a corridor.

Then sharing a photo of her daughter Mercy, 18, the “Like A Prayer” singer added, “OR…,,,,,,,,,,,.” In the photo, Mercy wrapped her arm around her mother while the pair struck a stylish pose.

“Dies,” Madonna added in a third snap alongside love heart emojis as she wrapped her arms around her twins Stella and Estere, 11. “#estere #stella,” the proud mother added across the photo.

Madonna — who is also mom to daughter Lourdes Leon, 27, whom she shares with ex Carlos Leon , and son Rocco, 23, who she shares with ex-husband Guy Ritchie — also shared photos of producer Sammy behind a DJ set, electronic musician and DJ Stuart Price, and a large group photo of her tour party.

“A Few Memories from the end of my tour…………… The rest are forever in my heart! #madonnacelebrationtour ,” she added under a carousel post that featured more photos of her time on tour.

Madonna's tour snaps come after her son David posted photos of himself in the late Prince's Paisley Park studio earlier this month.

In a photo, David sported a floral suit as he sat by a mixing board. "One of the best experiences on this tour," he wrote at the time. "Having the chance to sit in Prince’s studio and play on his stage. A true dream come true 💟💟💟."

Meanwhile, Madonna paid tribute to her children in April by sharing behind-the-scenes of them during her tour .

"On the day before our 80th show of the Celebration Tour I need to acknowledge my incredibly talented children who carried me through this Journey each of them bringing their own unique talent to the stage," she wrote under a carousel post on Instagram .

More than a million music fans gathered at Brazil’s iconic Copacabana beach to prove their love to Madonna over the weekend.

The “Get into the Groove” and “Vogue” pop diva concluded her career-spanning Celebration Tour with a bang over the weekend, treating fans in Rio de Janeiro to a free beach concert on Saturday. “This really happened,” the singer reminisced in an Instagram video shared Sunday.

The Instagram clip shows an aerial view of attendees assembling on the sandy Brazilian strip, which stretches more than 2 miles along the coast. While some fans danced on the beach, others hosted house parties in nearby beachfront apartments and hotels, the Associated Press reported.

“This place is magic,” the 65-year-old singing icon said during her show, which also featured appearances from Brazilian artists Anitta and Pabllo Vittar.

An estimated 1.6 million people gathered for Madonna’s Celebration Tour finale, Brazilian outlet G1 reported, citing Rio City Hall’s tourism agency. The event was also broadcast on Brazilian network TV Globo. Even before a million-plus fans descended on Copacabana over the weekend, Madonna announced in late March that her send-off would be her “biggest gig yet.”

“The show will be free of charge as a thank you to her fans for celebrating more than four decades of her music over the course of the epic global run of the tour,” her website said.

Saturday’s concert broke Madge’s personal attendance record — 130,000 fans at Paris’ Parc des Sceaux in 1987 — by more than tenfold. Madonna also bested the record previously held by the Rolling Stones’ 2006 Copacabana concert , which drew 1.5 million people.

” @Madonna makes history in Rio tonight marking the largest ever standalone concert for any artist, with over 1.6 million fans attending as she closes The Celebration Tour,” Live Nation announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

Madonna’s Celebration Tour launched in October, months after she was hospitalized for a bacterial infection last June. The Grammy winner brought her headline-generating tour to Inglewood’s Kia Forum for several nights in March.

Times critic Mikael Wood wrote that the singer’s Celebration Tour “ was curiously short on joy. ”

“A pop concert is a theater of personality and craft, not one of plot or character development,” he added. “But a narrative this messy needed more razzle-dazzle.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
