Flying Games is an album of constant and wildly hypnotic movement, each moment animated by unexpected sounds that morph and expand and spin off into their own strange orbits. To create such a mesmerizing body of work, Mike spent months – including much of 2020’s lockdown – writing and recording in his makeshift Megaplum home studio, immersing himself in sonic experiments. The album was produced by Gordon, recorded by longtime collaborator Jared Slomoff, and mixed by six-time Grammy-winning engineer Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, The War on Drugs),

As the songs became more fully formed, Gordon brought in contributions from bandmates, drummer John Kimock, keyboardist Robert Walter, percussionist Craig Myers, and guitarist/pedal-steel player Scott Murawski, all of whom submitted parts from afar which were then woven into the initial tracks.

Mike Gordon Announces Solo LP ‘Flying Games,’ Releases Lead Single “Tilting”

Mike Gordon Announces Solo LP ‘Flying Games,’ Releases Lead Single “Tilting”

Phish bassist Mike Gordon has detailed the upcoming release of a solo LP titled Flying Games , set to launch on May 12 via ATO Records/ Megaplum. In celebration of the release, Gordon has shared the first taste of the project by premiering a high-octane single titled “Tilting,” along with an accompanying music video.

Flying Games was produced by Gordon and his longtime collaborator Jared Slomoff and produced by Grammy award-winning engineer Shawn Everett who is known for his work with The War on Drugs and Alabama Shakes. The project also features contributions from his bandmates, drummer John Kimock, keyboardist Robert Walter, percussionist Craig Myers, and guitarist/pedal-steel player Scott Murawski.

Of today’s single, Gordon said, “For me, ‘Tilting’ is about being in a situation or a relationship where you don’t know if your footing is solid, but then accepting that and realizing you enjoy the feeling of disorientation. Whether it’s playing music or driving or experiencing something new, I’ve always felt more present when I don’t know where I’m going next.”

The single, consistently funky and drenched in distortion, showcases Gordon’s propelling bass throughout. Over the thumping core of the song, Gordon sings in a tone that maintains an optimistic cadence which partners well with an enduring quality that can be felt at the core of his bass progressions. The animated video mimics the feeling of contentment despite chaos with eccentric characters, outlandish machinery and coy expressions.

“As someone who comes from a world of telepathic improvisation, the idea of one person layering sounds alone in a room might seem a bit against the mythos,” said Gordon of the LP which marks his sixth solo effort. “But with this record I didn’t want to work in that traditional way of going into a studio with a band and recording for two weeks; I wanted to take my time and explore, and really go deep into the fabric of the music to see what we could find.”

Phish and Gordon will celebrate  Flying Games  with a wide-ranging live run that includes both headline shows and top-billed festival performances. Dates for the run will begin on June 15 at Portland, Maine’s State Theatre and culminate with a home state tour finale at Higher Ground Ballroom in Burlington, Vt., on July 2.

Tickets for all newly announced headline dates go on sale Friday, March 17.  Pre-sale tickets are available now. Find tickets and more information about Gordon’s tour here.

Mike Gordon Announces New Album and Shares First Song

'Flying Games' is heralded by today’s premiere of the high velocity new single, “Tilting”

Mike Gordon has announced his new solo album, Flying Games, arriving via ATO Records/Megaplum on Friday, May 12. Pre-orders are available now. Produced by Gordon, recorded by longtime collaborator Jared Slomoff, and mixed by GRAMMY® Award-winning engineer Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, The War on Drugs), Flying Games is heralded by today’s premiere of the high velocity new single, “Tilting,” available now at all DSPs and streaming services. An official animated video premieres today via YouTube.

“For me ‘Tilting’ is about being in a situation or a relationship where you don’t know if your footing is solid,” says Mike Gordon, “but then accepting that and realizing you enjoy the feeling of disorientation. Whether it’s playing music or driving or experiencing something new, I’ve always felt more present when I don’t know where I’m going next.”

The bassist and co-founder of the seminal improvisational American rock band Phish, Gordon will celebrate Flying Games with a wide-ranging live run that includes both headline shows and top-billed festival performances. Dates get underway June 15 at Portland, ME’s State Theatre and then culminating with a home state tour finale at Burlington, VT’s Higher Ground Ballroom on July 2. Tickets for all newly announced headline dates go on sale Friday, March 17. Pre-sales are available now. For complete details and ticket information, please visit mike-gordon.com/tour .

The sixth solo LP from Mike Gordon, Flying Games is an album of constant and wildly hypnotic movement, each moment animated by unexpected sounds that morph and expand and spin off into their own strange orbits. In keeping with the eclectic sensibilities that informed past work like 2017’s pop-fueled OGOGO and 2020’s Noon (a collaborative album made with acoustic guitar luminary Leo Kottke), the new LP imbues elements of everything from disco and dancehall to psych-folk and funk into Gordon’s unfettered and expansive breed of rock music. To create such a mesmerizing body of work, the Vermont-based musician spent long months – including much of 2020’s lockdown – writing and recording in his makeshift Megaplum home studio, immersing himself in sonic experiments ranging from the playfully spontaneous (constructing beats by banging wrenches against various pieces of farming equipment) to the hyper-specific and technical (programming a keyboard with chords sampled from’50s-era Hawaiian guitar records). As the songs became more fully formed, Gordon brought in contributions from his bandmates, drummer John Kimock, keyboardist Robert Walter, percussionist Craig Myers, and guitarist/pedal-steel player Scott Murawski, all of whom submitted parts from afar which were then woven by Gordon and Slomoff into the initial tracks. Revealing entirely new dimensions of the kaleidoscopic musicianship Gordon has displayed as Phish’s bassist for the last four decades, the result is a work of both extraordinary vision and daring execution.

“As someone who comes from a world of telepathic improvisation, the idea of one person layering sounds alone in a room might seem a bit against the mythos,” says Gordon. “But with this record I didn’t want to work in that traditional way of going into a studio with a band and recording for two weeks; I wanted to take my time and explore, and really go deep into the fabric of the music to see what we could find.”

Mike Gordon Announces New Solo Album, “Flying Games”

Kevin Johnson

Phish bassist and co-founder Mike Gordon has revealed his sixth solo album, Flying Games , will be released on May 12th. The release will be his first solo studio record since 2017’s OGOGO .

A press release for the album calls it “constant and wildly hypnotic” and a continuation of Gordon’s explorations into merging sonic states from disco and dancehall to psych-folk and funk.” Gordon will be joined by drummer John Kimock, keyboardist Robert Walter, percussionist Craig Myers, and guitarist/pedal-steel player Scott Murawski, although he did all of the writing on his own this time around.

Fans can get a preview of what’s to come with the first single, “Tilting,” which comes with a trippy animated video.

“For me ‘Tilting’ is about being in a situation or a relationship where you don’t know if your footing is solid,” the bassist says, “but then accepting that and realizing you enjoy the feeling of disorientation. Whether it’s playing music or driving or experiencing something new, I’ve always felt more present when I don’t know where I’m going next.”

In addition to Flying Games , Gordon has announced a solo band tour for June and July.

CMAC concert venue in New York: What to know

Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center is the official name of the Canandaigua area's outdoor concert venue. Everyone calls it CMAC.

The venue is on the Finger Lakes Community College campus, 3355 Marvin Sands Drive.

Marvin Sands, by the way, is the late founder of Canandaigua Wine Co. and among the community leaders responsible for opening the venue in 1983 as the Finger Lakes Performing Arts Center. Constellation Brands secured the naming rights to the venue in 2006, after community leaders approached Constellation Brands execs Richard and Rob Sands to save the venue and improve it.

CMAC features 5,000 covered seats and lawn seating for up to 10,000 guests.

Mike Gordon Shares LivePhish Playlist With Favorite Tracks From 2021

Phish   bassist  Mike Gordon  has created a  LivePhish  playlist comprised of his favorite tracks from the 2021 summer and fall tours. The eight-song playlist pulls from seven different shows, ranging from older Farmhouse  classics to brand new tunes.

“Getting ready for Mexico and wanted to share a playlist of my favorite tracks from Phish’s 2021 Summer and Fall Tours,” Gordon wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday afternoon. “For this list, I decided to lean more toward the funky rather than the mesmerizing.”

The first cut on Mike’s playlist came from the band’s fourth show of the tour at Alpharetta, GA’s  Ameris Bank Amphitheatre  on August 1st . Many will remember the exhaustive, 34-minute “Tweezer” that followed “More” to open the second set. One of Gordon’s favorite live tracks from all of 2021 was the “Twist” that immediately followed that historic “Tweezer”. Without giving fans a chance to cool down from the half-hour jam,  Trey Anastasio  dropped into the familiar chords of “Twist” and Phish took it for an 11-minute ride that eventually linked up with “Piper”.

Gordo chose “The Moma Dance” from Ruoff Music Center (formerly Deer Creek ) in Noblesville, IN as the second song on his playlist. The night-two, August 7th performance in Noblesville continued Phish’s jam-heavy tour and saw the band open with “Crowd Control” and “Poor Heart” before falling into this solid first set mainstay.

Two songs from night one in Atlantic City, NJ (8/13) made it on the 73-minute playlist, both the mid-set “Wolfman’s Brother” and the “Funky Bitch” that came just two tracks later. The fifth and final song from summer tour was the “No Men In No Man’s Land” from August 27th at  The Gorge  in George, WA .

The first fall tour track, “Mull”, came from October 26th at Santa Barbara Bowl  in California . Originally debuted just a few months earlier at  Ascend Amphitheater  in downtown Nashville, TN, this Mike Gordon-sung tune came towards the end of the first set in Santa Barbara. After playing it at The Gorge at the end of the summer, Phish had the new tune dialed in and stretched it for nearly ten minutes before linking up with “Set Your Soul Free” to close out the first frame.

The remaining two songs on the Mike Gordon “Phish 2021 Best” playlist came during the band’s Halloween run at  MGM Grand Garden Arena  in Las Vegas, NV. First, “Olivia’s Pool”, which arrived on October 29th and marked only the second play since November 17th, 1997 (per phish.net ). This rare, homonymous rock and roll track opened the show and eventually set up another rarity, “Axilla Part II”. Finally, Gordon’s playlist closed with the Sci-Fi Soldier  debut of “Something Living Here”. Initially played on Halloween night , this 10-minute jaunt contained some of Gordon’s funkiest riffs and came towards the end of a second set rife with anxiety-inducing production issues.

Mike Gordon’s new playlist is available exclusively through the LivePhish app. Head here to listen and for more information.
