Airlines, hotels, resorts, and tourist attractions are showcasing the different ways they’re taking measures to ensure everyone’s  health and safety in the wake of COVID-19. Even so, there’s no doubt many of us are a bit extra cautious — especially as we continue to adapt to the “new normal” way of life. 

As travel slowly commences once again (the CDC still recommends staying put for a while), it’s essential to remain vigilant and not let your guard down should you decide to take a trip during this time. 

Considering hotels are a revolving door for people worldwide, you’re going to want to learn how to sanitize a hotel room even if there are strict cleaning policies in place — because you just never know. Don’t worry; you don’t have to sport a hazmat suit and pack a week’s worth of cleaning supplies in your suitcase. It only takes a few extra precautions to disinfect a hotel room — here’s how. 

Have a Chat With the Hotel Regarding Sanitation Protocols 

Sure, most hotels say they have protocols in place, but what are they? Don’t be afraid to ask questions so that it’s clear what measures they’re taking to ensure your health and safety. For example, are they using traditional hotel-quality cleaning supplies, or did they up the ante with a spray machine that distributes an EPA-registered disinfectant as well as a diffuser to kill airborne pathogens? If not, bring your own as both surfaces and the air you’re breathing in need to be addressed. 

You also may want to ask the hotel to remove “high touch” items such as the bedspread and accent pillows before your arrival, and don’t be embarrassed to ask how long it was before someone stayed in the room before you. 

Sanitize Your Luggage

Before bringing your luggage and personal belongings into the hotel room, make sure everything is sanitized correctly — especially if it’s been tossed around on the cargo of a plane and the baggage drop-off/pickup. Wipe down or spray every piece from handles to zippers to the wheels. Briggs & Riley has  hard shell and soft luggage ,  both of which are easy to keep clean . 

Don’t Rely on In-Room Amenities 

While it’s easier to use hotel shampoo, shower gel, and other essential toiletries, bring your own travel-sized amenities to avoid touching items that were likely in a lot of hands before yours. Other things you may want to consider packing include plastic cups and cutlery, pillowcases, and a washcloth. As for everything else, sanitize, sanitize — which brings us to our next point.

How to Disinfect a Hotel Room

Take a good look around your room, consider all of the high touch points you’ll be in contact with, and then sanitize them regularly. Remember, you’re not going to be in the room the entire time; you’ll be elsewhere in contact with other people, places, and things, so a one-time sanitation job isn’t going to cut it. Not to mention, the cleaning crew may be in your room daily. Here’s a general list of items to wipe down, but since each room and hotel is different, use your best judgment during the sanitation process. 

• Door knobs/handles on both sides and in all rooms
• Door lock(s)
• The headboard of the bed
• Any tables and chairs you plan on sitting at/on (including nightstands)
• Television and radio remote controls
• Lamp/light switches
• Countertops
• Showerhead, rails, and floor
• Toilet seat and flusher
• Alarm clock
• Hotel phone
• Curtain pull
• Your shoes each time you walk back into your room

Staying Healthy and Safe: The Bottom Line

As you keep your hotel room sanitized, continue to practice social distancing measures, thoroughly wash your hands regularly (Happy Birthday twice, everyone), wear your mask and, and keep hand sanitizer with you at all times. If something in your room doesn’t look or feel clean, don’t be afraid to speak up. Your goal is to sanitize as a protective measure — not to do the hotel’s job of keeping the room tidy.

Cleaning house is not something anyone wants to think about when vacationing or traveling to new exotic destinations. Did the previous guest prepare a fresh goat on the counter? Who cleaned the bathroom? And god knows what went on in the bedroom!

Fortunately, at hotels, there is normally some assurance of cleanliness. There’s a maid and individually wrapped soaps and drinking cups and a paper strip over the toilet that says “sanitized”. The room often smells like cleaning products.

In contrast, at home stays and Airbnbs in developing countries: anything goes. And as perpetual international slow travelers, household sanitation is never far from our minds. So we always carry a budget travel cleaning kit.

In truth, only one time in our nearly 100 Airbnb rentals have we walked into a place and felt it was not suitably clean. In that case, we simply went to the corner store, purchased some cleaning supplies, and within 90 minutes had the apartment ready for our two-month stay. Taking action ourselves seemed easier than starting a negotiation with the rental agent — and beside, the price and location were amazing.

Since that episode, however, we have taken to carrying with us a small travel cleaning kit. And my wife and I have developed a routine which we do immediately upon check-in at any new ‘home’ no matter how it looks.

Travel cleaning kit useful in COVID era

Whether you are staying somewhere long-term, vacationing for a week, or even spending just one night in a hotel, you can’t go wrong by having these few small items at the ready to assure your space is tidy, germ-free, and pleasant smelling.

1.  Rubber gloves

A pair of latex dish washing gloves is advisable. They roll up to nothing, protect hands, skin and nails against filth and cleaning agents, and come in handy for occasional bigger and messier situations which sometimes develop during travel. These are the first items out of the travel cleaning kit. I put on the gloves to begin our move-in sanitation sweep.

2.  Disinfectant wipes

A package of 20-30 alcohol-based, disinfectant wipes is the largest and most important weapon in our travel cleaning kit. If you carry nothing else, these could suffice for most needs. In our case, five or six individual wipes are needed upon arrival for several specific uses.

The first area of our attention is the kitchen. The sink faucet and handles are thoroughly wiped as is each of the kitchen cabinet and drawer handles and edges where food-prep hands might grab or touch. I always wipe the exterior of any soap bottles, brush handles and drain plugs and baskets too.

The cooking controls are next; each knob or digital button is wiped, the oven handle and microwave door and controls too – then the refrigerator handles and door edge and jam. With all the ‘touching surfaces’ now cleaned, I go back and do the larger areas; the dish drying rack, the countertops, the rest of the sink itself. It’s usually surprising how dirty the disinfectant wipe is after this quick wipe-down. Sometimes I’ll do it twice.

More work is ahead with the wipes, but first, more about the kitchen.

3.   New dish washing scrubbie sponges

Once the sink/counter is cleaned, my wife will begin the process of hand washing every dish, cup, glass, piece of silverware, pots, pans, etc. Everything that we might want to use for eating during our stay is washed and dried. We always bring a new scrub sponge with us for this purpose. Sometimes a new scrub sponge is provided. More often there is a used one – which sometimes looks or smells like death.

Most likely, all the kitchenware has already been washed. It’s in the cabinets/drawers. It looks clean. Still, I didn’t wash it. For all we know, the last renter used a serving fork to scratch his hairy back, or fed the neighborhood dogs from a dinner plate. Everything is washed thoroughly.

4.  Small bottle of dish washing detergent

Usually there is some dish washing detergent provided. Sometimes not. To wash the dishes, we carry a small, hand-sanitizer bottle – refilled with dish soap. It’s enough to last for a few days if necessary (until we get to the store) and in a pinch it can be used as hand soap during travel or if there is no soap at all at check-in (it has happened). While the wife cleans the kitchenware, I continue the disinfectant wipe down.

Particular attention to the bathroom

The next thing I clean in a new living space is the toilet seat. Seems wise. If our bare asses and private parts are to be on an unknown commode, I’m surely going to be confident it is clean. After the seat, I wipe the flushing handle, lid, tank, rim, and exterior of the bowl. Most often, there is a toilet brush provided – and I use that too. When finished, I know the toilet is clean.

Another disinfectant wipe is then used for the rest of the bathroom. I do the sink faucet and handles next, then the shower door handle and water controls, and also the bathroom doorknob and lock. I wipe down any shelving we might use to store our personal products then wipe the sink top. The final use for wipe #2 is to clean the edge of the bathroom door and door jam; specifically, any place where unwashed hands are likely to have touched when opening the door or using the room.

Wiping down anything you touch

Similarly, the next disinfectant wipe is used to clean every other door knob in the place, any closet or cabinet or drawer handle, then every light switch and individual lamp on/off control, and every window handle/latch/lock, even the door keys themselves and any key chains — again, the things that dozens/hundreds of other people may have touched with unclean hands. We’ve often been stunned at how filthy these ‘forgotten’ items are, even in an otherwise spotlessly clean dwelling.

A final new disinfectant wipe is used first to clean the spigot on any bottled water dispenser/garrafon (common in developing countries) then on any remote controls; television, air conditioner, fans, etc. I then use that same wipe on any control buttons on fans, TVs, coffee machine, hot water kettle, toaster etc.

Lastly, I go around with the last wipe doing other larger areas – the coffee table top, the kitchen table, and the backs and edges of dining table chairs where food/germ covered hands are used to pull-out and slide-in. I end the wipe-down with the bedroom nightstand tops and the headboard if it is a solid surface.

At the very end, I will often have a few of the disinfectant wipes with some ‘life’ left in them. Usually, I wipe any clothes closet shelves we will use, then I toss them into the shower stall/tub and wipe the floor before pitching them all into the trash.  

Thank you, wet wipes! Time to unpack.

5.  One small hand towel; one washcloth

These final items of the travel cleaning kit have come in handy on several occasions. Usually, there is a hand or kitchen towel of some kind in our rental units. But sometimes none – or they look more like stained, grubby rags. Did the previous renter polish his shoes with that? We advise carrying a small clean towel or handi-wipes for drying dishes or fingertips or for use as an emergency door or bath mat or sweat rag.

There are certainly more cleaning related supplies that a traveler might want or need. But we purchase those as needed at local stores. In fact, we will typically buy and leave behind unused paper towels and tissues, laundry detergent, hand and body soaps, bug sprays, air fresheners, etc. at each of our long stays. We do also carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer and a few other multi-use personal care items.

Still, with just the handful of cleaning items listed above, we have confidently lived in over 20 countries on four continents.

We urge all travelers to consider creating your own compact travel cleaning kit and routine. It’s a sure way to put your mind at ease and render irrelevant whatever bizarre cooking, personal hygiene, or hobby was practiced by the previous guest.

Last resort

If something really isn’t right — if your Airbnb rental is just too dirty or something else is really wrong, the company has a grievance/refund process .

Hopefully, it won’t come to that.

The ultimate hotel room coffee-making guide

A thousand times better than whatever’s in the room.

Here is my philosophy on great coffee: drink it if you can get it, and don’t be a snob if you can only get something basic. But I have my limits on what I’ll accept, and those limits are well above what’s usually available in the little basket in your typical American hotel room. I am currently sitting in my first hotel room in over a year and figure a few of you might be doing the same soon, so here’s my guide for how to make the best coffee.

The obvious option is to locate the nearest coffee shop where you’re traveling, but that would necessitate leaving your hotel room, and the whole point of coffee is to build up the wherewithal to face the world in the first place. Instead, I prefer to make the coffee myself in the most convenient way given the limitations and options usually available in a hotel room. 

The best portable coffee brewer: AeroPress Go

Of all the coffee makers in all the travel bags in all the world, the AeroPress Go is the best for travel. It comes with a bunch of pieces of equipment that you’ll want on hand. There’s the basic system itself, which consists of a tube and plunger, of course. But it also packs itself into its own plastic cup and comes with a little container for filters, a scoop, and a stir stick.

There are a few reasons the AeroPress Go is so great for travel. First, it’s indestructible. Everything is plastic and can be knocked around. It’s also light, self-contained, and easy to clean. Most importantly for me, it’s an incredibly forgiving coffee maker. Conditions in a hotel room are going to vary from your home setup: unless you’re willing to devote space to a proper kettle and scale, you will be using smaller and simpler methods for getting hot water and measuring your ratios. Given that you can’t do everything exactly as you might like, the AeroPress has the best Good Coffee To No Fuss Ratio I’ve found.

It comes with a coffee scoop and stir stick, if you like using those when you brew your coffee. (I don’t bother with either.)

AeroPress Go

The AeroPress is the simplest way to make great coffee on the go. It comes with extra accessories that make life a little easier, too, including a filter holder, scoop, stir stick, and cup. It all packs up into a compact, clean package.

The simplest way to boil water in a hotel room: immersion heater

This little coil is the thing that unlocked my entire travel coffee setup. The thing about making coffee is you need very hot water, and the thing about hotel rooms is your options for making very hot water range from bad to none. An immersion heater neatly solves that problem without taking up too much space.

You may be tempted, as I have, to buy a portable water kettle — the kind that collapses down. I have tried two or three, and they’re all bad: too fussy, hard to clean, and too big. This little coil is really all you need to boil water, provided you have a vessel you can drop it in.

A couple words of warning. 1. I don’t think it’s a great idea to use this in the cup that comes with your AeroPress. I’ve done it in a pinch, but I think you should use something else. I use my own thermos, but you can also get by with whatever mugs are provided to you in the hotel room. 2. This coil is a blunt instrument: it’s a coil of metal literally hooked directly into the outlet. Never leave it unattended when plugged in, and never plug it in without first ensuring it’s submerged in water.

One thing you’ll miss out on is directly controlling the exact temperature of your water with this boiler. That’s fine because you’re already using the AeroPress, which is very forgiving about things like water temperature.

When packing, I stuff this coil and its cord inside my travel mug. 

Norpro Instant Immersion Heater

This dead-simple immersion water heater boils water just by plugging it in, but you will need to provide your own vessel. It’s easy to use, but never use it unattended, and never plug it in unless it’s already immersed in water.

Get good coffee beans or grounds

You’re going to need good coffee to make good coffee, so get some good coffee. How you handle this is entirely up to you. My setup includes a hand coffee grinder (see below), but pre-ground beans are perfectly fine for hotel room coffee if you ask me. 

My preferred way of handling the Bean Question is to not bring my own from home. Instead, I do a tiny bit of research before I leave and then buy them from a local shop when I arrive in town. I aim to try coffee that’s local and / or new to me. If you choose not to bring a grinder, the move is to go to the shop and ask them to grind the beans for you — that way, they’ll be just a little fresher than if you buy a pre-ground bag.

The last couple items below are totally optional. An AeroPress Go, a water boiler, and coffee are really all you need. 

My favorite travel mug: Zojirushi stainless steel travel mug

I won’t deign to tell you what kind of travel mug you should use, but this one is my favorite. It’s compact, utterly spillproof, and doesn’t slosh coffee into my face when I’m walking and sipping. It’s a lovely coffee mug.

There are two downsides. You have to take some pieces apart to properly clean it; the lid is made up of plastic and gaskets. It’s not difficult to do and easy to put back together, but it is a little bit of work. 

The second is a weird one, but here we go: for some people, it’s too good at keeping coffee hot. It sounds strange to complain about a coffee thermos being too good at its job, but sometimes you will use it at a coffee shop where you don’t have complete control over the temperature. For me, I’d rather have something that I know will keep my drink hot for hours.

I also use this as my travel water bottle when the coffee runs out. I recognize the irony of putting all this work into making great coffee only to use the same mug to drink water that will taste vaguely coffee-esque if I can’t clean it properly.

Zojirushi Stainless Steel Travel Mug, 12-ounce

The Zojirushi Stainless Steel Travel Mug keeps coffee hot for a very long time — so make sure it’s the temperature you want before you put the lid on. A flip-top cap makes it easy to take a quick sip and the spout is designed to prevent splashing.

My favorite portable coffee grinder: Timemore Chestnut C2

Okay, this is where I’ve gone off the deep end, I admit it. Hand-grinding your beans, one cup at a time, is obviously and inherently ridiculous when you’re sitting in a hotel room. But I bought this Timemore grinder on a lark a couple years ago, and it’s such a good little machine that I pack it anyway.

There are lots of different hand grinders, but I love this one because it’s relatively small and has a satisfying heft. It has a ton of different grind size options. I’ve used it enough that I can eyeball how much to fill it with beans to get the right amount of coffee ground to use in the AeroPress Go.

It’s over the top, I know. But fresh, burr-ground coffee really does taste better — which is to say you have to work for it with manual labor, and therefore you will convince yourself you can taste the difference.

Spending over $50 on a hand grinder for coffee is objectively silly, but the Timemore feels so well-made that you’ll find ways to justify it. It’s a burr grinder as well, which is the best way to grind coffee beans.

Bonus: A simple AeroPress Go recipe

There are a kajillion AeroPress recipes on the internet. I am here to tell you that the best one is the one you land on yourself after some trial and error. In a hotel room, I do not bother with a scale. (I’m not a maniac, I swear.) Here’s my recipe:

• Put a (dry) filter in the AeroPress, and set it on top of the included cup.
• Grind the coffee as fine as I feel like. (The finer it’s set, the more work it is to hand-grind.)
• Eyeball the amount of coffee I put into the AeroPress. I fill just over the base of the filter cap.
• Fill it up with just-off-the-boil water just over the number 3 on the side.
• Set the plunger on and pull up slightly to make a vacuum.
• After two minutes, swirl the whole thing to agitate, then press for 30 seconds.
• Taste. Add a little water if necessary.

Under the guidance of hospitality impresario Sean MacPherson, the Chelsea has undergone a recent renovation, blending its historic charm with amenities like multiple dining options including the new Café Chelsea and a light-filled spa. Yet, despite its transformation into a luxury hotel, it has never lost its sense of community, with long-time residents still calling it home.

We talked to general manager Marcus Nicolaidis about its history, artistic legacy, timeless cool factor, and attracting travelers and locals alike to its storied embrace.

What do you consider to be the best room at the property and why?

The Junior Balcony Suite is our most requested room as it is one of two room categories that provides access to the iron balconies that overlook West 23rd Street and a view of the famous neon “Hotel Chelsea” sign. The Junior Balcony Suite also features a deep soaking tub, spacious room with living area, and many feature original stained glass windows and decorative fireplaces. The perfect mixture of old and new.

What makes the Hotel Chelsea unique among hotels in New York?

Undoubtedly its history and the impact the hotel has had on New York culture. The current owners—Sean MacPherson, Ira Drukier & Richard Born—have managed to bring the building back to life with a much needed refresh, but the spirit of the hotel will always remain.

How would you describe the guests and the vibe at the hotel?

Creatives have always been particularly drawn to the hotel, and we’ve seen that continue. We get a wide range of guests, from a younger generation who are just discovering the Chelsea for the first time, to those who know all about its history and are curious and excited to return. The property has multiple event spaces and dining options which means there’s always something going on. Grab a table in the lobby, and you will have a front row seat to some of the best people watching.

What feeling about Chelsea do you hope to impart to guests?

We hope the hotel’s extraordinary history as a New York cultural landmark—in addition to the revived design and elegance of the space—permeates throughout all experiences, from overnight stays to imbibing at Lobby Bar.

The hottest hotel rooms right now are tents and RVs. Here's why big chains are all in on 'glamping'

• Hotel giants Hilton and Hyatt are growing their luxury camping portfolios.
• Both are adding glamping resorts to their booking channels, where their members can earn and redeem points.
• Interest in high-end camping has remained strong since its boom during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Forget high-rise hotels and all-inclusive beachfront resorts — the world's most popular hotel companies see a future in luxury tents.

If it seems like a third of your friends are going "glamping" these days — a portmanteau of glamorous and camping — you'd be correct. Luxury and traditional camping comprised 32% of all vacations in 2022, with more than 10 million households going on a glamping trip that year, according to campground giant Kampgrounds of America, or KOA.

Over the last few years, scores of boutique luxury camping properties have popped up around the US to meet growing demand, from Getaway's Instagram-famous matte black tiny cabins to RV-rental platform Outdoorsy's growing portfolio of luxury canvas tent resorts.

Now, hotel giants want a slice of the high-end camping pie.

Hilton and Hyatt are getting into glamping

Hilton and Hyatt have both recently announced partnerships and properties to expand their glamping portfolios.

Earlier this year, the former said its members could soon earn and use Hilton Honors points to book AutoCamp's chain of luxury campgrounds.

The brand's resorts are best known for their stationary Airstream trailers turned hotel rooms , although they also offer "traditional" glamping accommodations like tiny homes and high-end canvas tents with beds.

It's Hilton's first move into the glamping industry. And it's starting with a pretty successful partner.

Like other glamping and camping properties, AutoCamp saw a boom in bookings during the COVID-19 pandemic as travelers shunned cruises, planes, and traditional hotels for road trips and the great outdoors (remember that?).

The glamping company has grown quickly: Four of its seven resorts launched after 2021, and two more locations are now underway.

Hilton hasn't disclosed how many points travelers need for an AutoCamp reservation or when they'll become available. Still, the glamping company isn't known to be as affordable as camping. In the summer, a weekend stay can range from about $300 to $670 a night.

For its part, Hyatt has taken the same approach as its opponent.

On Wednesday, the competing hotel giant announced World of Hyatt members can now earn and spend points at more than 700 of high-end hotel brand Mr and Mrs Smith's properties. This includes five of its 17 glamping resorts, like a bed under the stars in India's Pench National Park, and a thatched-roofed hut in Sri Lanka's Yala National Park.

Hyatt plans to add more Mr and Mrs Smith properties to its World of Hyatt collection every quarter. No word yet on whether it will include the high-end hotel brand's 12 other luxury camping resorts.

But if you think AutoCamp's Airstreams can get expensive, wait until you see Mr and Mrs Smith's glamping accommodations. The most expensive of the five — all-inclusive cabins in Dunton, Colorado — starts at $2,855 per night. The huts in Sri Lanka are, at their cheapest , $724 a night.

But the addition of these glamping resorts to its booking channels isn't Hyatt's first venture into glamping. The company's Alila Ventana Big Sur hotel in California also offers high-end canvas tents alongside conventional hotel rooms.

Hyatt is now using the same model to launch an adult-only expansion of its all-inclusive Dreams Curaçao resort, set to open in June. Alongside the Caribbean property's existing traditional hotel, Hyatt plans to deploy modular tiny-home-sized hotel room units directly on the beach.

Glamping could be a great investment for these hospitality giants.

Glamping was one of the biggest travel trends from the COVID-19 pandemic, and interest has yet to fade. In 2023, KOA called the industry an "aggressive growth segment," with four in 10 campers expressing interest in glamping that year.

According to the campground giant, compared to traditional campers and hotel guests, "glampers" spend more money daily at glamping properties and their surrounding areas — music to Hilton and Hyatt's ears.

Add Kodō Hotel to the list of the best and most unique places to stay in Los Angeles .

Modern, minimalist and boasting just nine rooms, the boutique hotel opened earlier this year in downtown L.A.’s Arts District along South Santa Fe Avenue just below 7th Street. Directly across the street from Warner Music Group’s L.A. offices, Kodō Hotel is tucked away on the second floor of a former Beaux Arts-style fire station that dates back to 1927.

Now the nearly 100-year-old Engine Co. No. 17 building has been renovated and reborn with a completely different vibe, trading in boho cool for a Japanese-ryokan-inspired aesthetic. Designed by M Royce Architecture in collaboration with gry space , the rooms feature polished concrete floors, low-to-the-ground king-sized and queen-sized beds and high loft-like ceilings. A study in grays, beiges and whites, the hotel is a spartan but serene respite from the urban-core streets of the Arts District.

The showpiece of each guest accommodation is the bathroom, which seems to float in the middle of each room, featuring a geometric freestanding sink in dark stone, a beautifully lit circular hanging mirror and a shower. The effect is both sculptural and sensuous.

Guests should be aware that the hotel does not have an elevator and the hotel rooms are reached only via a tall staircase. Rooms, starting at $218 a night, are available at kodohotel.com and booking.com .

The property’s ground-floor Kodō restaurant serves everything from sushi rolls and omakase platters to salads and main dishes like Uni-mentaiko Cream Pasta with cured egg yolk. It features minimalist meets earthy design in keeping with the aesthetic of the hotel, as well as an outdoor patio and a private dining room that’s located in the fire station’s former handball court.

More dining options located nearby in the Arts District are Hauser & Wirth’s Manuela restaurant, Korean-American Yangban (right next door to the hotel), French restaurant Camphor (which has one of the best burgers in L.A. ), Mexican hotspot La Cha Cha Chá, chef Enrique Olvera’s Damian, The Factory Kitchen and Baroo.

Kodō Hotel is the brainchild of Boulevard Hospitality Group, which also owns the historic Japanese restaurant Yamashiro overlooking Hollywood, as well as such spots as Durango Cantina on Melrose and the three-level Cork & Batter in Inglewood. Boulevard recently launched Nice & Sweet , a new bakery and coffee shop in Hollywood, located at 7061 W. Sunset Boulevard.

Any hotel can host you in a destination, but an extraordinary one will immerse you in the local culture right from the jump. The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet, voted the best hotel in the world by our readers in this year’s World’s Best Awards , sits firmly in the latter. 

“This recognition is an incredible honor for our team in Sultanahmet and across Four Seasons, further solidifying our position as luxury hospitality leaders. This exceptional property reflects our enduring commitment to personalized service and exemplary quality – all grounded in the genuine heart of our people,” Alejandro Reynal, the president and CEO of Four Seasons, told Travel & Leisure about winning the remarkable accolade. 

Right from its curbside entrance at Tevkifhane Street, the hotel is indeed a special one. Upon exiting my cab on a warm fall day, I got to experience this particular brand of magic for myself, determined to make the most of my short weekend getaway to Istanbul — and luckily for me and all the hotel guests, the towering neoclassical yellow building sits just a short walk from some of Istanbul’s most famous sites. But we’ll get into that in a minute because the building deserves to be this story's star. 

The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet

This particular building hasn’t always been a destination people want to check into. Built in 1918, it began as a guest house only to be quickly transformed into the Ottoman Empire's first jailhouse, a convenient destination next to the local courthouse. Even the street names give away its history — Tevkifhane translates to “detainee,” while the street around the corner from the front door, where prisoners were released, is named Kutlugün, meaning “happy day.” 

Political prisoners were often housed here, including novelist Orhan Kemal, who wrote Ward 72 while imprisoned. The jail eventually closed in 1969; however, following the 1980 coup, it was reopened for a short time as a military jail before falling into disrepair until 1996, when the Four Seasons took over. But the brand has made sure not to forget the building and the area’s extraordinary past. 

“The property itself is a marvel, and the thoughtful enhancements of its century-old Turkish neoclassical architecture have ushered in its next chapter, creating new opportunities for our guests to discover Istanbul from our very special hotel at the heart of the city’s Old Town,” Reynal said. “From Sultanahmet and beyond, our teams will continue to shine bright by building lasting connections with our guests and bringing the very best travel experiences to life.”

Not only did the Four Seasons brand work meticulously to preserve elements of the building in the mid-'90s, it did so again in 2022, when it emerged from a two-year renovation project, pulling in even more of Turkey’s gorgeous style into every room. “Our designers researched styling, pattern, and details from antiques, fabrics, and architecture and distilled these influences through a contemporary filter to create designs that feel completely in tune with the building and setting,” Martin Goddard of the design studio Goddard Littlefair, shared in a statement following the unveiling. 

Indeed, every inch of this space feels not only aligned with its surroundings but a part of them. Despite being next door to some of the most visited sites in the nation, it still provides guests with all the peace, quiet, and privacy they’d want. 

Upon check-in, I was whisked directly to my premiere room. Though the hotel’s smallest room category, it still clocked in at 645 square feet, larger than most New York City apartments. Everything about it felt plush — from the entry couch to the upholstered chairs around a small dining table for any in-room meals, the Turkish Kilim textiles hanging on the walls, and, of course, the overstuffed bed that sat like a cloud, ready to envelop weary travelers. However, I wasted no time lying down, instead doing what all guests at the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet should do: swing open the windows. 

My room happened to open up to the dazzling and verdant courtyard below, sectioned off with intentional style to include garden space, lounge, and dining spaces, which can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, and dinner thanks to the Avlu Restaurant — think Anatolian mezze plates; erişte pasta made with chives, spiced walnut, sautéed asparagus; and lamb tander smothered in a gorgeous tomato sauce with sheep cheese, oregano, chili flakes, sumac, and yogurt. Though the food here is undoubtedly fabulous, do make sure to head a few floors up for sunset. 

Resting atop the hotel sits Süreyya, its rooftop bar that comes with the bonus of the breathtaking Hagia Sofia Grand Mosque as the backdrop, making it the perfect place to transition from day to night with a craft cocktail in hand, like its Sultan Martini, made with vodka, passion fruit, yuzu juice, and vanilla syrup. Those feeling peckish while looking at the view can order small plates, salads, sandwiches, a sweet treat, or a cheese and honey plate stacked with Anatolian cheeses. 

However, there was one destination in the hotel that I couldn’t experience — but you now can. That is the Kurna Spa, offering traditional Turkish hammam rituals on its massive slate gray marble stones surrounded by colorful blue and soft green Turkish tiles, alongside a full menu of massages and facials. 

Though I didn’t get to see the spa during my stay, I could still explore so much more thanks to the hotel’s privileged position steps from the Hagia Sofia, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar, about a 15-minute walk away. There, I filled my bags with jewels, sweet-smelling spices, and tiny trinkets to remember my trip by. I also purchased two large rugs from a local supplier. Unsure of how I’d get them back to the hotel, the merchant asked where I was staying, and I couldn't even get the hotel's full name out before he said they’d be delivered to my room within an hour. And true to his word, they were there upon my return, speaking to how stellar this hotel’s relationships are within the area. 

The hotel, without question, deserves all the praise heaped upon it for the food and drink (worthy of a visit alone), the decor that roots you firmly in Istanbul, but most of all, because it is so utterly welcoming to all that walk through its door, setting a standard for hospitality that few can match. And the view most certainly doesn’t hurt either. 

The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet offers 65 luxurious rooms across several categories, including deluxe, premiere, and superior rooms and eight suites. Every room includes a seating area, a dining table, and an over-the-top fluffy bed. Guests can maximize their stay by booking the Beyzade Suite, a bi-level suite offering sweeping views thanks to its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the street below. 

The hotel offers guests plenty of choices when it comes to their meals. Guests can book a fine dining experience at Avlu, its outdoor restaurant located in the courtyard, or inside at its elevated Lingo Lingo Bar and Restaurant. Guests are also invited to sip cocktails at night on the roof at Süreyya Teras Lounge or grab a coffee and a pastry in the morning at its on-site cafe, La Pistache. 

The concierge at the hotel will happily help guests deep dive into local culture by setting them up with one of the hotel’s unique experiences. This includes activities like an exclusive Bosphorus cruise, time with a Turkish coffee fortune teller, and a Wonders of Istanbul local tour. 

At the hotel, guests can book treatments at Kurna Spa, including traditional Turkish hammam treatments that will leave them feeling fully renewed. 

The hotel offers guests babysitting services, as well as baby and child amenities like cribs and rollaway beds, to ensure everyone has a fun and comfortable stay. 

The hotel takes part in various Four Seasons sustainability efforts, as well as site-specific efforts like its water reduction program through water-efficient landscaping, and irrigation control, waste reduction via the elimination of single-use plastic food and beverage containers and bathroom amenities, and by offering local, sustainable food and beverages and seasonal menus. The hotel also celebrates sustainability through its local tours to heritage sites and by displaying local artists throughout the hotel to bolster the Istanbul community.

There’s no need to rent a car when staying at The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet. It’s within walking distance to several major attractions, including the Hagia Sophia Basilica, Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar. There are plenty of taxis available as well. 

A good way to get a little value out of your stay is by booking the hotel’s bed & breakfast rate, which includes the daily buffet breakfast in AVLU restaurant or an American breakfast through in-room dining for up to two guests.
