Need a bit of inspiration to get you through another day in the exciting (and sometimes stressful) world of hospitality? No problem, hosco.plus has you covered!

There are a million billion inspirational quotes out there, but we’ve scoured the Internet for the best ones to hang above your desk at the hotel, restaurant, cruise ship or any other hospitality milieu you work in.  Consider yourself inspired:

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. Mahatma Gandhi

Really, who can argue with Gandhi? This quote reminds us during the most challenging times why we do our jobs. For many of us, hospitality is a true calling.

The customer is never wrong. César Ritz

Take a cue from the master of modern hospitality himself, César Ritz. Use this as a mantra, to repeat before any guest interaction!

Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin was full of stellar advice, but we think this quote can be most appropriately applied to our line of work. Just as important as knowing the customer is never wrong? Never telling him he is wrong, even when tempted!

Quality is never an accident. It is always the result of an intelligent effort. John Ruskin

Ruskin was an art critic, but his words ring true across métiers. Remember this whenever you get the urge to rush through something.

People will forget what you said. They will forget what you did. But they will never forget how you made them feel. Maya Angelou

The American poet speaks the truth on the importance of leaving guests with that elusive “warm, fuzzy feeling.”

Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning. Bill Gates

Take it from one of the richest men in the world: unhappy customers are why we keep making progress, so we are lucky to have them. Ask yourself this next time you handle a complaint: what did I learn?

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.  Steve Jobs

Prepare yourself for a lifetime of hard work and long hours if you’ve chosen a career in the hospitality industry. Want to make it bearable? Follow Jobs’ advice and make each day count by putting in great work and nothing less. If you don’t love it, you may be in the wrong line of work!

A vocabulary of truth and simplicity will be of service throughout your life.  Winston Churchill

Known for his mastery of the English language, Winston Churchill could make anything sound good. Learn to communicate directly and effectively; it will earn you much respect in life and work. Think a short email doesn’t count? Think again. Write and say everything carefully.

Take criticism seriously, but not personally. If there is truth or merit in the criticism, try to learn from it. Otherwise, let it roll right off you. Hillary Clinton

She may have lost the recent American presidential election, but she is still winning in the advice category. Learn from your critics, or let them go.

30 Inspirational Quotes for Hospitality Management

CLP_Hospitality_Hotel_RGB.jpg

You are helping guests create memories, and to do that well takes a touch of inspiration. To create that spark, we’ve compiled wisdom from some of the giants in the hospitality industry.

Let’s let these legendary hoteliers speak for themselves; here are 30 inspirational quotes for hospitality management:

On Staffing

Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Hotels: “Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don't want to.”

Danny Meyer, CEO of Union Square Hospitality Group and customer service guru: “Hospitality is almost impossible to teach. It's all about hiring the right people.”

Horst Schulze, former president of The Ritz Carlton Hotels and CEO of Capella Hotel Group: “Don’t hire people to fill a position, select people to fulfill a dream and to serve a purpose.”

On Customer Experience

Steve Wynn, founder of Wynn Resorts: “All of the razzmatazz and jazz we hear about facilities and everything else doesn’t amount to a hill of beans. It’s customer experience that determines the longevity and endurance of these enterprises.”

Willard Marriott, founder of the Marriott Corporation : “Motivate them, train them, care about them, and make winners out of them... they'll treat the customers right. And if customers are treated right, they'll come back.”

Ian Schrager, hotelier and co-founder of Studio 54: “When I go to a hotel, I want to feel like a guest in a good friend's house. I want to be treated nicely and have every whim catered to. It means if I want room service that it's quick, inexpensive and tastes good.”

Helen Hamlyn, philanthropist and hotelier: "I don't know anything about running a hotel except what I don't like at other places."

Anthony Melchiorri, host of Travel Channel’s “Hotel Impossible”: "When owners say, 'well (online reviews are) not important, people lie about them,' I guarantee you, everybody, you're all going out of business."

On the Importance of Details

J. willard marriott : “ it's the little things that make the big things possible. only close attention to the fine details of any operation makes the operation first class.”.

Bill Kimpton, founder of Kimpton Hotel and Restaurant Group: ''A hotel should relieve travelers of their insecurity and loneliness. It should make them feel warm and cozy.''

Isadore Sharp, founder and chairman of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts: “I’ve identified the four key strategic decisions that formed the rock-solid foundation of Four Seasons. These are now known as the four pillars of our business model. They are quality, service, culture, and brand.”

Conrad Hilton, founder of the Hilton Hotels chain: “ Leave the shower curtain on the inside of the tub.”

On Leadership

Horst Shulze: “Leadership is creating an environment in which people want to be part of the organization and not just work for the organization. Leadership creates an environment that makes people want to, rather than have to, do.”

J.W. “Bill” Marriott, Jr., Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board of Marriott International, Inc. : “The four most important words in the English language are, ‘What do you think?’ Listen to your people and learn.”

Barry Sternlicht, founder of Starwood Hotels and Resorts: “You have to be willing to change your mind…As the facts change, change your thesis. Don’t be a stubborn mule, or you’ll get killed.”

Isadore Sharp: “Keep your egos in check, and let the people who work for you shine. Because they’re the people who know our customers best, the people we depend on to lead the way. It’s no longer ‘Do as I say.’ It’s ‘Do as I do.”

Barry Sternlicht: “You can learn everything that there is to know about the industry or the player from the company that is performing better or worse.”

Richard Branson: “When employees tell you about their good ideas for the business, don't limit your response to asking questions, taking notes and following up. If you can, ask those people to lead their projects and take responsibility for them. From those experiences, they will then have built the confidence to take on more and you can take a further step back.”

On Perseverance

Kemmons Wilson, founder of the Holiday Inn: “ Remember, a person who wins success may have been counted out many times before. He wins because he refuses to give up.”

On Being a Woman in the Hospitality Industry

Grace Leo-Andrieu, founder of G.L.A. Hotels: "I get a lot of comments from businesswomen traveling alone who say that staying at the Lancaster in Paris is like staying with friends. The staff is trained to put women at ease. The restaurant is open only to guests and their friends, so there's a sense of security."

Mary Mahoney, hotelier: "I always advise other female professionals to look for companies where women are already in place in high level positions and for companies that offer internal mentoring programs."

Kit Kemp, co-founder of Firmdale Hotels: "The challenge I give myself—which, I'm sorry, would never occur to a man—is to craft common spaces with residential tone and texture where people want to idle."

Joy Rothschild, Senior VP of Human Resources, Omni Hotels: "I find that this is one industry where hard work, spirit, and energy trump degrees or where you sit on the pecking order. If you are willing to put in the time--which is easier said than done--you should have no obstacles. You do need to be willing to go where the opportunities are. The more flexible you are, the better."

Marla Davis, President of the Network of Executive Women in Hospitality: "Joining a professional association shows initiative and provides ambitious women with training and support, as well as networking and mentoring opportunities."

On Good Design

Ian Schrager: “Good design is good business.”

Avi Brosh, founder of Paligroup Hotels: “Design is and of itself is not a competitive position. It’s one leg of the stool. It’s one of many points that go into making something great.”

Grace Leo-Andrieu: “You can't pay enough attention to bathrooms. Many women travelers spend more time in them than in their bedrooms."

Kit Kemp: "In my experience, men and women in the hotel business have different priorities. It's the nuts and bolts of elevator shafts versus the seduction of upholstery fabrics. They want to talk about quantity surveyors; I want to talk about a great new bench I've found to put at the foot of the bed."

On the Future

Avi Brosh: “The future of boutique hotels is not about size or design or asset class. It’s about going back to the beginning, back to what Morgans did. That’s delving on this promise to create an authentic ad hoc community of like-minded people that for an evening or a few nights transcend nationality or who believe who they are. It’s a promise that a guest be whoever they want to be for that night.”

On Dreaming

Conrad Hilton: “ To accomplish big things, I am convinced you must first dream big dreams.”

hospitality and tourism management quotes

True hospitality consists of giving the best of yourself to your guests.

Washington Irving quote: Christmas is a season for kindling the fire for hospitality in the hall...

Christmas is a season for kindling the fire for hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart.

Do what you do so well that they will want to see it again and bring their friends.

The word hospitality in the New Testament comes from two Greek words. The first word means love and the second word means strangers. Its a word that means love of strangers.

Reading furnishes the mind only with materials of knowledge; it is thinking that makes what we read ours.

Hospitality means we take people into the space that is our lives and our minds and our hearts and our work and our efforts. Hospitality is the way we come out of ourselves. It is the first step towards dismantling the barriers of the world. Hospitality is the way we turn a prejudiced world around, one heart at a time.

Faith in the ability of a leader is of slight service unless it be united with faith in his justice

There is an emanation from the heart in genuine hospitality which cannot be described, but is immediately felt and puts the stranger at once at his ease.

What does cookery mean? It means the knowledge of Medea and of Circe, and of Calypso, and Sheba. It means knowledge of all herbs, and fruits, and balms and spices... It means the economy of your great-grandmother and the science of modern chemistry, and French art, and Arabian hospitality. It means, in fine, that you are to see imperatively that everyone has something nice to eat.

Africans believe in something that is difficult to render in English. We call it ubuntu, botho. It means the essence of being human. You know when it is there and when it is absent. It speaks about humaneness, gentleness, hospitality, putting yourself out on behalf of others, being vulnerable. It embraces compassion and toughness. It recognizes that my humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.

Always walk through life as if you have something new to learn, and you will.

Let not the emphasis of hospitality lie in bed and board; but let truth and love and honor and courtesy flow in all thy deeds.

Hospitality should have no other nature than love.

Hospitality is always an act that benefits the host even more than the guest. The concept of hospitality arose in ancient times when the reciprocity was easier to see: in nomadic cultures, the food and shelter one gave to a stranger yesterday is the food and shelter one hopes to receive from a stranger tomorrow. By offering hospitality, one participates in the endless reweaving of a social fabric on which all can depend-thus the gift of sustenance for the guest becomes a gift of hope for the host.

There is no hospitality like understanding.

True Hospitality is welcoming the stranger on her own terms. This kind of hospitality can only be offered by those who've found the center of their lives in their own hearts.

It is difficult to get rid of people when you once have given them too much pleasure.

The good guest is almost invisible, enjoying him or herself, communing with fellow guests, and, most of all, enjoying the generous hospitality of the hosts.

Mighty proud I am that I am able to have a spare bed for my friends.

Hospitality means primarily the creation of free space where the stranger can enter and become a friend instead of an enemy. Hospitality is not to change people, but to offer them space where change can take place. It is not to bring men and women over to our side, but to offer freedom not disturbed by dividing lines.

True hospitality is a delicate balance of warmth and form.

In order to solve problems, information has to be shared; and not only information, but doubts, fears and questions.

The earth community, the Life Community, is not the property of any one religion or group or part of the world; it is the Commons that embraces us all, our planetary home. And it needs us as never before. It calls to us to become, not heroes but community builders, builders of home, gatherers and embracers, bearers of hospitality, keepers of the shared space that nurtures us all. It calls us not to go forth and come back laden with honors but to honor where we are, who we are, and from that place to reach out to connect to and honor each other in the community of life.

When hospitality becomes an art it loses its very soul.

UN Tourism and Hotelschool The Hague to Drive Innovation in Hospitality

  • 23 Apr 2024

UN Tourism and Hotelschool The Hague, have agreed to partner around the development and execution of pioneering projects in the hospitality industry.

A new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aims to stimulate innovation and fresh ventures within the hospitality industry, promoting entrepreneurship and education while engaging in open innovation projects that can enhance the tourism industry, with a particular focus on hospitality. Currently, 20% of entrepreneurs of the UN Tourism Network are directly related to hospitality and are the most dynamic projects including a variety of stakeholders of the industry.

Building on the UN Tourism's established innovation network, this agreement will further facilitate connections between startups and potential investors, as well as promote knowledge and skills through joint events, communication channels, and media interactions. This partnership not only underlines a commitment to a more sustainable future for the industry but also signifies a shared commitment to providing inclusive opportunities and memorable global student experiences, demonstrated through Hotelschool The Hague's global Sustainable Hospitality Challenge .

Strong foundations for innovative future

Ms. Natalia Bayona, Executive Director of UN Tourism, expresses: "Unfortunately 90% of startups within the hospitality sector eventually do not succeed. A decent tourism education and knowledge of the hospitality sector is necessary to develop a disruptive and well-functioning product. Through our collaborative efforts, we aspire to alter this trajectory by offering a more robust foundation, fostering invaluable connections, and providing a conducive testbed for emerging startups. Given that technology now permeates 70% of tourism enterprises, it is imperative that these startups are seamlessly integrated into the ecosystem, connected with pertinent stakeholders, and afforded the opportunity to validate their solutions in real-world settings before embarking on a larger scale.

Ms. Regine von Stieglitz, President of the Board of Directors of Hotelschool The Hague says: "At Hotelschool The Hague, we provide our students with the perfect balance of theory, real-world experience and applied research to prepare them for a career in the hospitality industry. We develop leaders who shape our global industry and drive it to give back more than it takes. We are proud to join forces with UN Tourism. We fully embrace their vision to Foster Innovation in the Hospitality Industry. In fact, our Sustainable Hospitality Challenge is a student competition designed to enhance the evolution of sustainable practices in hospitality, aligning seamlessly with the objectives of UN Tourism."

Hotelschool The Hague, founded and funded by the hospitality industry in 1929, provides high-quality education and cutting-edge research in the field of international hospitality management, with an emphasis on the transformation of sustainability and digitalization and on developing students into sought-after hospitality graduates who excel in leadership roles worldwide.

Helping Students Launch Careers: Aramark Collegiate Hospitality and USF’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Partner for Post-Grad Success

Aramark Collegiate Hospitality and University of South Florida’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management know that a strong educational foundation coupled with hands-on experience leads to post-graduation success. The first year of their partnership resulted in 100% job placement for the inaugural Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 classes.

Since 2022, the two entities have collaborated to fulfill the hospitality school’s mission to provide students with a comprehensive education that seamlessly integrates theoretical knowledge with practical industry experience. In May, a new class of USF/Aramark fellows graduates with valuable service leadership experience.

“The partnership between USF's School of Hospitality and Tourism and Aramark exemplifies the power of collaboration in shaping the future of the hospitality industry,” said Cihan Cobanoglu, Dean of USF’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

“By seamlessly integrating classroom learning with hands-on experience, fostering mentorship opportunities, and investing in the education of future leaders, this partnership serves as a beacon of excellence in preparing students for successful careers in hospitality. Together, we are not just building careers; we are cultivating a legacy of innovation, professionalism, and excellence in hospitality education.”

At the heart of this partnership lies a unique initiative: Aramark’s proactive engagement with first-year USF graduate hospitality students, providing practical experience and reinforcing classroom teaching with real-world application. The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management also can access the culinary and restaurant facilities across USF’s three campuses in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sarasota-Manatee. These experiences provide students professional experience and even the chance to participate in the expansion of residential dining in development at the Sarasota-Manatee campus.

Surveys found that the experience was instrumental in shaping students’ understanding of the field, helping to prepare them for challenges ahead, and fostering attention to detail that comes from hands-on experience. They have earned ServSafe certificates and developed customer service and communications skills, cultural acuity, and a comprehensive understanding of food operations.

David DiSalvo, District Manager for Aramark at USF, finds this robust partnership to be a source of pride and inspiration: “It would be difficult to find a program that has comparable rigor and depth to USF. Having strong ties between academia and industry is not only key to our strategic pipeline of talent but also allows students to have a sophistication about the intricacies of hospitality management upon graduation. The opportunities for learning, development, and innovation created through partnerships like this are endless.”

Aramark executives are regularly featured as guest speakers in USF hospitality classes, providing guidance, inspiration, and networking opportunities for future hospitality leaders. Students actively engage with Aramark in class research projects—an endeavor that develops research skills and provides Aramark valuable insights that inform ongoing operations and strategic initiatives.

Students take International Hospitality Management and Introduction to Food Management classes in a teaching lab space at the Argos Exchange restaurant on USF’s Tampa campus, and the partnership has spurred creative projects such as the USF Hospitality Food Sustainability Student Competition and campus engagement events to highlight USF’s diverse community through cuisine.

“When I speak about partnership with Aramark Collegiate Hospitality, I talk about the Hospitality Ecosystem on campuses,” said Jack Donovan, President and CEO of Aramark’s higher education division. “We are not satisfied with transactional relationships. What we do is analyze a school’s culture and needs and build a system that supports many audiences and enhances what that campus can offer its community. Our collaboration with USF represents the best of this.”

Mrs. Wallapa Traisorat, Chief Executive Officer and President, Asset World Corp Public Company Limited or AWC , today announced record-breaking operating results for Q1/2024 with significant growth from the strategy to expand the portfolio of quality assets, especially new operating assets in the Hospitality Business Unit that records the highest growth compared to 2019. HOTEL EBITDA (excluding Fair Value) peaked at THB 1,401 million, an 83% growth compared to the same period of 2019, surpassing pre-COVID levels, and 43% growth quarter-on-quarter. The Hospitality Business Unit continues to thrive, generating an Average Daily Rate (ADR) of THB 6,298 and Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR) of THB 4,711. Moreover, advance bookings grew to 753,841 nights, the highest level since 2019. Net profit for the quarter was THB 1,604 million, representing an 18.1% increase quarter-on-quarter while total revenue was THB 5,440 million, a 10.3% increase quarter-on-quarter. Business Unit EBITDA (BU EBITDA) climbed to THB 2,020 million, a 38% growth compared to the same period of 2019. AWC continued to implement its GROWTH-LED Strategy, generating total asset value growth of over 80% compared to pre-COVID levels. The company also emphasizes on developing Retail Destination and implementing the ‘Co-Living Collective: Empower Future’ experience for Commercial Business Unit, as well as the transition of its assets from Ramp Up stage to Business As Usual (BAU) stage through global partnerships which contribute to increasing access to customer base from 400 million to 600 million people worldwide. Meanwhile, freehold asset is valued at 94%, driving strong cash flow growth to deliver sustainable value to shareholders and stakeholders alike. In Q1/2024, AWC’s fixed assets totaled THB 149,550 million in value. Operating assets accounted for THB 109,526 million of the total amount.

New High Quarterly Performance

In Q1/2024, the Hospitality Business Unit delivered an impressive performance with the revenue proportion growing to 61%. The outstanding operating results were driven by the expanding Thai tourism sector, which attracted more high-to-luxury tourists, a key target group for AWC. These tourists have supported the growth of all AWC’s hotels especially luxury resorts, Bangkok-based hotels, and other properties outside the capital, contributing to the highest RevPAR and ADR numbers. The occupancy rate in Q1/2024 was 74.8% while HOTEL EBITDA MARGIN stood at 42.1%, up by 7.5% from the previous quarter and higher than the 2019 rate. Thanks to impressive and efficient cost management, the flow-through of the Hospitality Business Unit’s EBITDA was 60% year-on-year. On the Revenue Generation Index (RGI), many of AWC’s hotels outperformed competitors in the same category and area. For example, Courtyard by Marriott Phuket Town’s RGI was 194, Bangkok Marriott Hotel The Surawongse’s RGI was 175, and Le Méridien Bangkok’s RGI was 146.

AWC is determined to continuously develop, renovate, and enhance its quality properties. To increase the value of its operating assets, the company has also launched leading restaurants and cafes in both Bangkok and Chiang Mai including “Hong’s Chinese Restaurant & Sky Bar”, the first upscale rooftop Chinese restaurant in Chiang Mai at InterContinental Chiang Mai The Mae Ping, and “Cafe de Petal”, a European-inspired café at Athenee Tower. Additionally, AWC has also introduced “Pikul” application to ensure customers easy access to hotel, dining, and lifestyle services from AWC and leading partners in the tourism industry. In Q1/2024, AWC boasted 22 hotels with over 6,029 rooms and more than 80 restaurant outlets within hotels and various popular tourist destinations across Thailand.

For the Retail Business Unit, AWC has formulated a strategy to respond to its target groups’ changing lifestyles and needs. The Commercial Business Unit, meanwhile, successfully, and solidly maintained its revenue level, thanks to its Grade A office buildings, which are well-equipped to support hybrid work trend. Moreover, AWC is preparing to launch “Phenix” – a ‘World’s Food Wholesale Hub with Largest Food Lounge in Pratunam’. Scheduled for an official launch on 26 June 2024, Phenix will deliver seamless services both online and offline through collaborations with various world-class partners. Additionally, AWC will soon unveil “EA Rooftop at The Empire”. The project encompasses EA Gallery, featuring leading international-cuisine eateries with breathtaking views of Bangkok, EA CHEF'S TABLE, presenting three restaurants by Michelin-starred chefs, and Nobu Bangkok, which is not only Thailand's first Nobu outlet but also the world's largest and highest Nobu restaurant. Situated at “The Empire,” an ultimate Grade A office building in the heart of Sathorn, “EA Rooftop at The Empire” promises to establish Bangkok as a global destination of largest rooftop dining experience.

GROWTH-LED Strategy Empowers a Long-Term Portfolio

AWC has continued to implement its GROWTH-LED Strategy in pursuit of EBITDA growth. Under this strategy, the company’s unique business model has quickly bolstered the potential of Ramp Up and repositioning of assets which totaled THB 88,339 million in Q1/2024, strengthening them to ‘Business As Usual’ (BAU) stage. Furthermore, AWC has been rigorously turning its developing assets worth over THB 40,024 million into operating assets. The five-year strategy will require an investment budget of more than THB 126,000 million. AWC has a robust debt capacity and Growth Fund Model that will enhance its quality portfolio and value in the long run.

In 2024, AWC plans to develop “Lannatique” as a quality property project that will establish a world-class art, cultural and lifestyle tourism destination in the heart of Chiang Mai. AWC has also invested further in the strategic Chang Klan area to develop a luxury hotel and Chiang Mai’s first in-hotel water park.

“AWC firmly believes in the value of exceptional Thai arts and culture, including the cherished Lanna arts with their longstanding significance. Our shareholders have endorsed investments in ‘Chiang Mai Night Bazaar’, ‘Kalare Night Bazaar’, and ‘The Plaza Chiangmai’ projects, which are integral to 'Lannatique’. This expansive endeavor will commence the opening of its first phase by the end of 2024, followed by subsequent phases scheduled to be completed within 5 years. It aims to foster the growth of the real estate and tourism industries, promote job creation, and stimulate the local economy to strengthen Chiang Mai's position as a world-class sustainable tourism destination. Apart from development in Chiang Mai, which has a total investment exceeding THB 11,950 million, AWC plans to further invest in two additional high-quality real estate projects located in prime areas of Bangkok. The OP Garden project is situated in the Bang Rak area, strategically connected to the flagship project, The Plaza Athenee Nobu Hotel and Spa Bangkok, along the Chao Phraya Riverbank to promote waterfront tourism destinations. Operations for this venture are expected to commence around the fourth quarter of 2027. Furthermore, there are hotel projects focusing on wellness planned for the Sukhumvit 38 area, with operations anticipated to commence around the third quarter of 2028. These developments are aligned with the commitment to support Thailand as a sustainable global tourism destination,”  Mrs. Wallapa added.

In Q1/2024, AWC also achieved remarkable success in sustainability, supporting Thai tourism on the global stage by achieving the highest scorer in the Hotels, Resorts & Cruise Lines industry, ranking among the Top 1% (Gold Class) on S&P Global rankings. AWC, moreover, successfully entered S&P Global’s The Sustainability Yearbook 2024. On top of these achievements, AWC has partnered with and secured long-term sustainability linked loans from leading financial institutions. AWC has successfully increased the proportion of sustainability linked loans to 100 percent. These milestones are a testament to AWC’s commitment to its “Building a Better Future” philosophy and solid efforts to establish Thailand as a global sustainable tourist destination.
