The Ropes Mansion in Salem was famously featured in the 1993 movie Hocus Pocus . / Photo by Nick Ares on Flickr/ Creative Commons .

It is day blursteenth of the social-distancing era—and if there’s one thing that bored, isolated Bostonians have learned by now, it’s that movie marathons and long car rides are two of the few diversions that have remained solidly pandemic-proof. (Small mercies!) As someone who greatly enjoys wasting both time and gas money in the pursuit of escapist entertainment, this got me thinking: What if Boston combined the two, and compiled a list of day drive-friendly destinations featured in Massachusetts-made films?

Bingo. Your latest weekend itinerary, and Netflix queue, was born.

It was hard to pick just a few locations, given how the Bay State has become a much more popular town for movie-making over the last decade or so . That said, we’ve steered clear of all those accent-heavy films shot mainly in Boston (see: The Departed, Ted ) in favor of flicks that lensed in the ‘burbs—and, ideally, offer some other entertaining reason to visit. Without further ado: Please silence your cell phones, except for the GPS, and settle in for the ride. Oh, and don’t forget to hit the car wash— they’re open again , after all.

The Ropes Mansion in Salem — Seen in: Hocus Pocus

Address: 318 Essex St., Salem Distance from Boston: 21 miles Just before everything went sideways, millennials received the news that some of us have been waiting on for 26 Halloweens: Hocus Pocus is getting a sequel . It’s unknown if the original’s star trio—Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy—will reprise their roles as the witchy Sanderson sisters, last seen wreaking havoc on Salem, Massachusetts in 1993. We do know, however, that a trip to the spellbinding seaport is a goldmine of movie locations : Old Town Hall was the setting for a massive dance party, a now-apartment complex was captured in its former life as an elementary school, and the Ropes Mansion, a Peabody Essex-owned property built sometime in the 1720s, was the character Allison’s extremely impressive home. The mansion is probably the most Instagrammable option, and make a note to return post-pandemic: It’s open to self-guided tours in normal times.

First Parish Church in Cohasset — Seen in: The Witches of Eastwick

Address: 23 N Main St., Cohasset Distance from Boston: 26 miles Here’s another entry in the list of iconic girl-groups who still make us scream “ werk, witch!” In this dark comedy from 1987 , Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Susan Sarandon team up to cast spells and turn the tables on a chauvinist jackass played by Jack Nicholson, who is in full smarmy-mode as a self-described “horny little devil” (figuratively and  literally). In one particularly memorable, stunt-filled scene, Nicholson is dramatically blown through the streets of town and into a church—that’s the First Parish Church in downtown Cohasset, which enchanted producers with its Anywhere, New England feel. (Eastwick is actually a fictional town in Rhode Island.) While you’re there, order a curbside croissant from French Memories patisserie, and take it for a stroll to soak in the quaintness.

Medfield State Hospital in Medfield — Seen In: Shutter Island

Address: 45 Hospital Rd., Medfield Distance from Boston: 29 miles Back when people did things like go to the movies, the Coolidge Corner Theatre’s After Midnite program , curated and hosted by cult-film connoisseur Mark Anastasio, was one of my favorite reasons to stay up late. In May, the series was supposed to stage a pop-up screening of Shutter Island  on the grounds of the abandoned Medfield State Hospital—where scenes from the Martin Scorsese psychological thriller were filmed. A certain pandemic prevented that (a rescheduled date is TBD), but you can still check out the grounds yourself: They’re publicly accessible, and very cool, in a creepy-pretty, haunted-New-England way. I’m still looking forward to a future on-set experience, but in the meanwhile, Leonardo DiCaprio looks just as good at home.

The Ames Mansion in North Easton — Seen In: Knives Out

Address: 259 Massapoag Ave., North Easton Distance from Boston: 30 miles Knives Out  was a refreshingly grown-up whodunit comedy when it snuck into theaters late last year, as well as a smart lampooning of rich white people who “voted for Obama!” but think more like Trump. (You know a few on Nantucket.) The dapper but dysfunctional Thrombey family’s handsome, Brahmin-esque estate is where much of the detective-work takes place. And while the exterior of the mansion is a private home, the interior scenes were shot inside the Ames Mansion at Borderland State Park, a picturesque plot with 20 miles of wooded trails for hiking or biking, plus ponds for fishing. The house is normally open for tours; hopefully those will resume by the time it’s sweater weather . (Also, if you have $1.4 million laying around, the modernist Lincoln home owned by local-boy Chris Evans’ character was recently placed on the market .)

Woodman’s of Essex in Essex — Seen in: Grown Ups

Address: 119 Main St., Essex Distance from Boston:  32 miles Guess who got one of Massachusetts’s most famous seafood restaurants to close for one of the few times in its century-long history? If you guessed Adam Sandler, you’re correct, and we are just as surprised as you are. Turns out, the New Hampshire native wanted Woodman’s of Essex to serve as the setting for a dinner scene in Grown Ups,  the 2010 comedy he cowrote and starred in, alongside a bevy of other  Saturday Night Live alums . The North Shore landmark obliged, shutting its doors to the public (for five days!) in the month of June for the first time in 95 years . Luckily, the restaurant is open for curbside takeout right now, and having recently gorged on its fried clam strip roll, I can confirm: It’s very worth the ride, all on its own.

Gibbet Hill Grill in Groton — Seen In: Little Women

Address: 61 Lowell Rd., Groton Distance from Boston: 41 miles Even when we’re not itching to get out of the house, Gibbet Hill Grill in rural Groton is another dining destination that we heartily endorse . Chef Brendan Pelley, who previously excited Boston’s dining scene with his Greek pop-up, Pelekasis, as well as a stint at the now-shuttered Doretta Taverna, has been doing amazing things with ingredients grown on-site at the property’s bucolic farm. The rolling green pastures also make for a popular wedding venue —so it’s appropriate that they served as the setting for a proposal scene (between Laurie and Jo) in last year’s acclaimed Little Women  adaptation. Check it out while you’re falling in love with Pelley’s steakhouse-oriented take-out menu, which includes large-format platters for family dinners, plus grocery items such as pre-portioned and marinated chops.

Lighthouse Beach in Chatham — Seen In: The Finest Hours

Address: 30 Main St., Chatham Distance from Boston: 93 miles Beaches are back under Phase One of the reopening, so a socially-distanced day-trip to the Cape is still a summer tradition you may be able to experience. One possibility: Lighthouse Beach in Chatham, where stormy waters once required the daring sea rescue of the crew of the SS Pendleton tanker. The super-dramatic 1952 incident went down in Coast Guard history and was portrayed in The Finest Hours, a 2016 dramatic thriller starring Chris Pine and Casey Affleck; it’s based on a book by Massachusetts authors Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman (who recently shared a very different Cape Cod-based story, of the true crime variety, with  Boston ). The beach, and its recognizable light station, cameo in the movie—and though the remains of the Pendleton remain submerged at sea, the propellor from the rescue boat is actually displayed at the beach parking lot .

Northfield Drive-In Theater in Northfield, MA/Hinsdale, NH — Seen In: The Cider House Rules

Address: 981 Northfield Rd in Hinsdale, NH Distance from Boston: 99 miles Only a handful of old-school, outdoor movie theaters remain in New England, and as someone who grew up down the street from the Mendon Twin Drive-In, I am firmly in favor of the medium’s—dare I say!— burgeoning renaissance .  If you’ve never attended a retro-style screening under the stars, now is certainly a fine time to experience such good, wholesome, well-ventilated entertainment, and the Northfield is an appropriate place for it. After all, it not only show s movies, it was  in  a movie:  The Cider House Rules,  an Oscar-winning 1999 drama that gave the drive-in a decent amount of screen time. First, watch the World War II-set film starring Tobey Maguire and Charlize Theron. Then, watch something at the Northfield—which, yes, officially has a New Hampshire address. Still, the drive-in’s property on the state borderline spills into Northfield, Massachusetts, so on that technicality, Rules  meets the rules.

THE DEPARTED FILMING LOCATIONS

Boston, Massachusetts is the backdrop of Martin Scorsese’s 2006 crime thriller The Departed . Many iconic Boston locations are featured as the Massachusetts State Police wages war against the South Boston mob.

The Departed was able to capture the essence of Boston in every aspect of the production by conducting careful research, finding the most authentic filming locations and having the actors take the time to live a day in the life of the characters the film is based on. Matt Damon worked with a Massachusetts State Police unit out of Boston to prepare for his role, accompanying them on routine patrols and drug raids, and learning police procedures like how to pat down suspects. Former bad boy Mark Wahlberg based his performance on the police officers who’d arrested him about two dozen times in his youth, and the reactions of his parents who had to bail him out with their grocery money. Jack Nicholson’s character is based off of the infamous South Boston mob boss Whitey Bulger, who spent 12 years on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list and was arrested in 2011 at the age of 81. Nicholson allegedly joined The Departed because he wanted to play Frank Costello, who he considered to be the ultimate incarnation of evil.

The Departed’s star-studded cast includes Leonardo DiCarprio (Billy Costigan), Matt Damon (Colin Sullivan), Jack Nicholson (Frank Costello), Mark Walberg (Dignam), Martin Sheen (Queenan), Alec Baldwin (Ellerby), and Vera Farmiga (Madolyn). The Departed features so many stars that their salaries took up half of the movie’s $90 million budget! Fun fact: DiCaprio dropped out of the lead role in The Good Shepherd to play Billy Costigan.

Famous Movie Locations You Can Visit in Boston

By: Author The Drivin' & Vibin' Team

Posted on July 17, 2023

One of the best ways to spend your time in New England might be visiting movie locations around Boston. The scenic city has been used as a set for nearly 100 motion pictures.

But what are some of these must-see sites, and can you check them out yourself?

Luckily, we have all the details about which films were shot where, and how you can visit them.

Let’s roll!

Boston, Massachusetts, USA city skyline at the harbor.

Why Is Boston a Popular Location to Film Movies?

Directors have selected Boston as a movie location for over 100 years. The city’s historic architecture and scenic river make it an ideal backdrop for the silver screen. Buildings like the Old State House and the Old North Church have stood for over 100 years, and Boston’s narrow streets lined with brick and brownstone buildings give it a unique feel.

Filmmakers choose to shoot in Boston not just for its picturesque scenery but also because of its distinctive personality. Residents of Boston have deep ties to Irish-Catholic culture as portrayed in movies like The Departed and The Fighter . Classic New England films that truly capture the city’s character usually feature stars from the area, like Matt Damon or Ben Affleck.

Another reason that filmmakers flock to Boston is for the tax credits. If the movie’s production value exceeds $50,000, it can be exempt from sales tax. The MA Film Office also details that movies shot in Boston can receive a 25% credit for payroll and production.

Between the state’s tax incentives and the city’s unique charm, it’s no surprise that directors select Boston for their box office hits.

Harvard Square Movie Location

The historic district of Harvard Square has been a neighborhood hub since its founding in 1630. At the time, colonists called the area Newstone. About 200 years later, locals coined its current name because this intersection separated Boston’s business district from its university area.

Today, you can hop on the subway from Harvard Square, run errands at the CVS, or grab a bite to eat at one of the local establishments. Additionally, the surrounding area houses the Harvard Art and Natural History Museums.

Many movies have been shot on location in Boston’s Harvard Square, most famously in Good Will Hunting . You can see the main characters grabbing a bite from Tasty Sandwich Shop. Other films with scenes shot at this location include The Paperchase and The Town .

Boston Public Garden Bench

Established in 1837, the Boston Public Garden is considered the first public botanical garden in the US. Amongst the plants, you can enjoy statues and a scenic lagoon and even take a tour via a swan boat. Even better, the 24-acre garden offers free admission and remains open 365 days a year. The beautiful scenery of this space has resulted in its use in several films.

You might’ve seen Mark Wahlberg’s character in Ted cruising on the swan boats with his teddy bear. Maybe you’ve seen the 2020 flick Love, Weddings & Other Disasters , with scenes filmed in the botanical garden.

Many visitors want to see one place in particular, the bench where Robin Williams delivers a monologue in Good Will Hunting . This might be one of the most beloved movie locations in Boston. Try typing “ Good Will Hunting bench” into Google Maps for precise directions to the spot.

Boston’s Cheers Restaurant Film Location

After you visit the public gardens, you can grab a drink right across the street. Try going somewhere where everybody knows your name. While Cheers isn’t technically a movie, we still think this famous watering hole deserves a place on this list.

Producers for the show wandered the streets of Boston searching for a typical American bar and landed on this spot.

The show didn’t film at this location but used a photo of the exterior Cheers on Beacon Hill on TV. This bar started receiving increasing foot traffic when the show took off, so they built a replica of the set inside. You can’t visit the actual filming location, but we think this should be considered the next best thing.

Don’t know if a visit to Boston is right for you? These are 5 Reasons to Avoid Boston you may want to consider.

Movie Location at the Iconic Fenway Park

Sports lovers will probably really enjoy this location. Catch a Red Sox baseball game at Fenway Park, and you’ll also be visiting an iconic movie location. At over 110 years old, this stadium can be considered the oldest in the nation.

You can also see soccer, football, and hockey, depending on the time of year you visit. The US Grand Prix Tour even hosted a big air ski contest at Fenway Park in 2016. Several concerts have also taken place here, including famous artists like Lady Gaga and Guns N’ Roses.

Some of the films that take place at the park include Fever Pitch , starring Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon, as well as Field of Dreams with Kevin Costner and James Earl Jones. More recently, it’s been featured in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Patriots Day .

Beacon Hill Movie Location in Boston

The historic Massachusetts State House, built in 1798, sits atop Beacon Hill. In the 1600s, colonists used the high point as a lookout to watch for invasions. The hill’s surrounding affluent neighborhood features Federal-style row houses and brick sidewalks. This residential area includes Boston Common and the Public Garden.

Consider taking a walk in this area to get a good look at the historic buildings and streets. You can even take a film-location walking tour for a guided experience of Boston’s famous movie sites.

Several directors have selected the aesthetic neighborhood for filming because it truly captures the city’s character. It’s depicted in the 1968 films The Thomas Crown Affair and The Boston Strangler . The 2014 movie The Equalizer , and Spartan , a flick from 2004, also feature shots set in this neighborhood.

Boston’s Film Locations will Reel you in!

This northeastern city has an endless list of things to do and places to explore. We love narrowing down our options when traveling by looking up film spots, and usually, we find these locations beautiful and fun to explore. And movie locations in Boston are no different.

Whether you catch a ball game or stroll through the garden, we think you’ll have a grand time in Beantown! Remember to keep your eyes peeled for familiar sites. You never know what cinematic treasure lies around the next corner.

Taylor Swift concert movie has hit seven Central Mass. theaters. Here's what to know

Taylor Swift attends the "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" Concert Movie World Premiere Wednesday at AMC The Grove 14 in Los Angeles, California.

“Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour”has come to Central Massachusetts theaters in its debut, which took place Oct. 13.

The concert film documents singer-songwriter Swift’s 2023-24 tour, which began in Glendale, Arizona, March 17.

The show’s set list has 44 songs divided into 10 acts that portray Swift’s 10 studio albums. The film’s runtime is 169 minutes, compiled with footage from several shows at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Advance ticket sales worldwide have already surpassed $100 million, which makes it one of this year's highest-grossing movies.

Where can the film be seen in Central Mass.?

“Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour” is showing in seven Central Massachusetts theaters: Blackstone Valley 14 Cinema de Lux in Millbury, Regal Solomon Pond in Marlborough, Entertainment Cinemas in Leominster, AMC Dine-In Framingham 16 in Framingham, Fine Arts Theatre in Maynard, Cinemaworld in Fitchburg and Gardner Cinemas in Gardner.

At the Blackstone Valley 14 Cinema, many opening-night screenings before 10 p.m. are nearly sold out, with remaining seats mostly in the front rows.

Similarly, at the AMC Dine-In Framingham 16, almost all showings until 11 p.m. have limited seat availability.

But after opening night, there are many seats available this weekend for the film.

How long will 'The Eras Tour' be in theaters?

This is not your typical movie release. “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour” only shows in participating theaters from Thursday through Sunday for three weekends following its initial release.

AMC Theaters across the country will hand out official mini movie posters while supplies last and collectible popcorn tubs and cups. AMC Theaters is offering private theater rentals for the movie.

Moviegoers are encouraged to sport Taylor Swift-themed attire. While theaters often ask audiences to keep quiet during movies, AMC Theaters is encouraging fans to dance and sing throughout the movie, like the concert it’s documenting.

Swifties excited

Madi Merritt of Southborough, a fan who went the third night of Gillette Stadium show of the Eras Tour, is looking forward to reliving the experience and seeing some songs Swift had not performed at her show.

Swift was at Gillette for three sold-out shows between May 19 and 21.

"I'm excited to see the Eras movie to get to experience some of my favorite songs she did not get to perform at my show," Merritt said. "I also think it's so interesting to get a behind scenes look at what it takes to put on such an impressive tour."

“Hocus Pocus” Filming Locations in Salem, MA

Photo of witches from hocus pocus

Please check with individual businesses to confirm hours before visiting, and note that  Max and Dani’s house is not accessible .

It might be difficult to believe that  Hocus Pocus,  the famed cult classic starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy debuted over 25 years ago, on July 16, 1993. You are probably familiar with the film’s story, which focuses on the Sanderson Sisters, who are executed as witches after casting a spell on young Thackery Binx, dooming him to roam the streets of Salem as an immortal black cat. 300 years later, a teenager named Max finds himself in the home of the Sanderson Sisters, where his lighting of the infamous black flame candle brings the trio back to life on Halloween night. Max, along with his sister Dani, and crush Allison, and Binx the cat, of course, must then work together to put an end to the Sanderson Sisters once and for all. Follow along with this list to visit sites from the film in Salem:

The opening scenes of the film, featuring Binx as a human prior to his cursing as a cat, were filmed in Pioneer Village, a living history museum located at Salem’s Forest River Park. Pioneer Village was built in 1930, and is America’s first living history museum. Tours of the village are offered seasonally June through September, and today the park is home to different events and festivals throughout the year.

The Phillips Elementary School from Hocus Pocus in Salem, Massachusetts

Phillips Elementary School on Salem Common / Max & Allison’s School

The Phillips Elementary School building conveniently ended its run as a functioning school in 1992, making it the perfect location for a movie filming in Salem that required some exterior high school footage. While the building is not open to the public today the exterior can still be viewed from the Common.

One of the most memorable scenes in the film was when Max attends the Halloween party at Allison’s house, the exterior of which was actually filmed using one of the most prominent 18th-century homes in Salem. The Mansion is owned by the Peabody Essex Museum, and the gardens located in the rear of the property are free to visit and open to the public.

The other classic party scene in the film was actually filmed just a few blocks away at Old Town Hall in Derby Square. Famous in the film for Bette Midler’s rendition of “Put a Spell on You,” the building today is open to the public, and hosts the Salem Museum and performances of Cry Innocent.

Salem Common

Many of the outdoor scenes in the movie were filmed at Salem Common, where ironically enough the film is shown each year during Haunted Happenings. View the events calendar at HauntedHappenings.org to check dates for this year’s Haunted Movie Series.

Old Burial Hill / Cemetery

Orne Street, Marblehead, MA |  OldBurialHill.org

The day-time cemetery scenes showing Max interacting with his new, not-so-welcoming classmates actually were not filmed in Salem at all. This footage was shot in nearby Marblehead at Old Burial Hill, one of the oldest graveyards in New England.

Count Orlok’s Nightmare Gallery

217 Essex Street | NightmareGallery.com

While this museum was not featured in the filming for  Hocus Pocus , it is home to an impressive figure of Winifred Sanderson, portrayed in the film by Bette Midler. Count Orlok’s is located at 217 Essex Street and is open as a museum and haunted house throughout the summer and October.

Do  have a good time visiting some of the locations from this classic film, but please  don’t  “run amok!”

The official movie launch is friday, but swift announced wednesday night that some locations will have early access showings starting thursday due to "unprecedented demand", by matt fortin • published october 12, 2023 • updated on october 12, 2023 at 5:30 pm.
