Celebrity Cruises Announces 2023 Alaska Schedule

Celebrity Cruises has announced plans for three of its ships to return to Alaska for the 2023 summer season. Cruises will begin on May 3, 2023 and run through mid-September.

Every voyage will include scenic cruising through the Inside Passage, as well as the opportunity to learn more about the culture and history of the state — from the native Tlingit people to the gold rush days that brought adventurers and fortune seekers to Alaska.

Highlights of Celebrity’s 2023 Alaska season include:

• Sailing roundtrip from Vancouver and passing through the Inside Passage twice,  Celebrity Eclipse  will offer seven-night itineraries to Hubbard Glacier, as well as visits to Juneau, Ketchikan, and either Sitka or Icy Strait Point.
• Celebrity Solstice  will offer seven-night itineraries from Seattle and one nine-night voyage, and will be the only Celebrity vessel to visit Endicott Arm Fjord and Dawes Glacier. Other stops include Victoria, Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan.
• The recently-renovated  Celebrity Millennium will offer the opportunity to see more of Alaska with seven-night, open-ended cruises between Vancouver and Seward — the gateway to northern Alaska. A multi-night Cruisetour can be added to these sailings to head deeper into the heart of Alaska, giving guests the change to get up close to the state’s tallest peak: Denali.

Adding a Cruisetour before or after a cruise provides passengers the chance to explore more of Alaska. Celebrity will be offering nine to 13-night Cruisetours in 2023, where guests will stay in first-class lodging, ride the Wilderness Express, and visit destinations such as Homer, Anchorage, and Fairbanks.

As is the case with every Celebrity ship now (except the Galápagos Islands ones), wifi, beverages, and gratuities are now included in the cruise fare.

Seattle, a city on Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest, is surrounded by water, mountains and evergreen forests, and contains thousands of acres of parkland. Washington State’s largest city, it’s home to a large tech industry, with Microsoft and Amazon headquartered in its metropolitan area. The futuristic Space Needle, a 1962 World’s Fair legacy, is its most iconic landmark.

A city of southeast Alaska on an island in the Alexander Archipelago. A supply point for miners during the gold rush of the 1890s, it is now a major port and tourist center on the Inside Passage. Population: 7,450.

Considered the "gem" of Southeast Alaska, the city is nestled against the ocean, tucked tight against the mountains and back-dropped by the lush green of the largest national forest in the United States, the Tongass. Visitors will find that Juneau is not only the state's capital, but it's also a melting pot of history, unique topography and jaw-dropping scenery that is found nowhere else on the planet. Whether it's wildlife viewing, glacier trekking, ziplining or just shopping for locally created artwork, visitors to this remote yet extraordinary region will certainly find a bit of "Alaska" to take home.

Skagway, with a population of 862, is located in the Upper Lynn Canal at the northernmost point on the Inside Passage in Southeast Alaska, 100 air miles north of Juneau and 110 road miles south of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. The City of Skagway is geographically the largest city in Alaska with 455 square land miles. Skagway's history and spectacular natural setting combine to create unparalleled sightseeing and recreation opportunities. Poke around on your own, or select from a variety of commercial tours. Either way, you will be amply rewarded with the sights and activities in and around Skagway.

Endicott Arm

Amid a forest of trees and a pristine mountain expanse you'll find a steep waterway otherwise known as Endicott Arm. The "arm" pierces 30 miles into the Coast Mountain Range offering up some spectacular sights for cruise passengers. Floating with you in Endicott Arm are 3-story pieces of ice that have "calved" (split) from the glaciers that line the waterway. Some of those chunks of ice are as long as a city block; some are as small as an ice cube. A visit to Endicott Arm proves that the best way to see and appreciate the wildlife and glaciers of Alaska is from the window or railing of your cruise ship. Keep those binoculars handy. As you move slowly and silently through the arm look for black and brown bears, mountain goats, wolverines, Sitka black-tailed deer, eagles, sea lions and harbor seals. Spectacular wildlife framed by glistening glaciers and blue, blue waters. Just another day in Alaska!

Vancouver, a bustling west coast seaport in British Columbia, is among Canada’s densest, most ethnically diverse cities. A popular filming location, it’s surrounded by mountains, and also has thriving art, theatre and music scenes. Raw on 5:  Using both raw and refined elements with earth tones, pearlescent accents, and natural textures, Celebrity has created a sophisticated yet approachable restaurant. The dramatic raw bar display at the entrance showcases an abundance of oysters, crab, and lobsters to choose from. The menu, also available at the Magic Carpet when positioned on deck 5, will feature more casual offerings like Shrimp Salad, their signature Lobster Roll and sushi and sashimi prepared by our expert sushi chefs. Magic Carpet:  Moving up and down the side of the ship, when on Deck 5, Magic Carpet is an open-air extension of Raw on 5. What makes the cruise industry's bond with alaska so strong.

After the world’s cruise lines once again came together in support of the Alaskan port city of Juneau following severe flooding, TTG’s Harry Kemble explores the enduring relationship between this unique destination and the cruise sector.

More than 100 homes in Alaska’s capital Juneau – a popular cruise call – were damaged last month after a glacial dam burst north of the city. But while there is flooding to some extent every year, locals say the past two breaches have been unprecedented.

Climate change is a factor and has, of course, been blamed, and the cruise industry’s contribution to increases in the kind of emissions responsible cannot be ignored. So are there tensions between Juneau locals and the lines that visit? Not so, it seems.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings’ brands – Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises – all offer Alaska cruises. Within three days of the floods, NCLH had donated $50,000 to support recovery efforts.

Dan Farkas, NCLH executive vice-president, general counsel and chief development officer, remarked: “Juneau is not just a destination for us. We feel a profound responsibility to stand by the residents in their time of need.”

Trade association Clia Alaska went one step further explaining NCLH’s move. “The industry endeavours to be good partners in the communities we visit – in Alaska and many other destinations around the world,” said a spokesperson.

“Donations made to local causes [that are] important to the community are one aspect of that partnership.”

Cruise lines’ efforts to reduce their environmental footprint and integrate with local communities stretch back decades, long before the flooding in Juneau became such an acute issue.

Princess Cruises pioneered the concept of shore power, with the help of partners, in Juneau in 2001. It meant the city’s port was the first in the world to install the technology, which allows ships to connect to the local grid and switch off their engines in port – cutting emissions.

A measure of just how ahead of its time the introduction of shore power was at Juneau, the world’s largest cruise port – PortMiami – only began offering shore power connections this year.

Holland America Line (HAL) operates six ships in Alaska. It is among the initial partners to join the Alaska Green Corridor, which launched in 2022 along with Carnival Corporation’s other brands – Princess, Carnival Cruise Line, Seabourn and Cunard – and Alaska’s ports.

The aim is to decarbonise shipping routes between Alaska, British Columbia and Washington, with an initial focus on cruise ship operations.

Exploring Alaska ’a privilege’

Cruise lines’ efforts to effect change and support Alaska extend into the communities their passengers visit.

Patrick Hill, head of Paramount Cruises, sailed on Celebrity Eclipse in Alaska in 2022. “A highlight during the seven-night voyage was the daily talk given by the onboard naturalist,” he noted.

“This gave us true insight into the history and culture of native Alaskans and the rich wildlife that can be seen throughout the voyage. I ended the trip with a greater understanding and respect for the many unique challenges faced by those living in this beautiful state.”

The shoreside team at Seabourn volunteered more than 500 hours and donated to local non-profit organisations, shelters and schools in 2023.

The luxury expedition line said: “The privilege to explore Alaska’s incredible scenery and wildlife comes with great responsibility to respect and help maintain the culture, history and natural resources.”

HAL has also donated more than $85,000 to school districts throughout the state to help buy classroom supplies, musical instruments, sports equipment and furniture.

Royal Caribbean International connects its guests to Skagway-based Voyij.com, an online marketplace featuring Alaskan small businesses, retailers and artists. It estimates the three-year partnership has driven more than $1 million in sales to local businesses.

Elsewhere, The Hurtigruten Foundation – a collaboration between Hurtigruten, Hurtigruten Expeditions (HX), their guests, partners and private donors, which was set up to fight climate change, strengthen local communities and stop mass tourism – last year donated around £3,500 to a project supporting community storytelling, which included a travelling exhibit along coastal Alaska focusing on climate change.

HX said it was drawn to the project because it felt a number of smaller Alaskan communities such as Seward, Sitka and Wrangell often didn’t feature in the national conversation on climate change effects.

“They are experiencing glacial melt leading to rising sea levels and landslides resulting from extreme precipitation events,” an HX spokesperson said.

It is estimated that between 7,500 and 15,000 people will visit the exhibit across all the locations during the current Alaska season, which runs from May to September.

’More must be done’

Westoe Travel co-owner Graeme Brett has visited Alaska six times on cruises or land tours with his wife Joan and estimates their agency sells 30 to 40 Alaska sailings a year.

Brett believes lines “could do a lot more” to support Alaskan communities. “As far as I am concerned, Alaska is the best cruise you can do,” he said. “But I do feel the lines could invest more of their profits into local communities.

“The cruise season in Alaska is short. These communities have got to survive all year round as they don’t have any tourists coming in the winter. Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan are reliant on cruise passengers coming into port.”
