If you’re embarking on a short trip through the Balkans , you might not have enough time to explore Bosnia thoroughly. And while we wholeheartedly recommend travellers see more of a country than just one city, undertaking a Split to Mostar day trip gives you an opportunity to get a small taste of Bosnia & Herzegovina if you’re spending the majority of your time exploring Croatia and driving down the Dalmatian Coast.

Mostar is a relatively small city meaning that travellers can see most of the highlights within one day. However, if time allows, spending one or two nights in Mostar will allow you to get a deeper understanding of the complicated history of the city as well as see some more of the nearby attractions.

So if you’re considering taking a day trip to Mostar from Split, here’s everything you need to know about how to get there and what to see to make the most of your short time in Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Table of Contents

How to Get from Split to Mostar

There are three main transport options for getting from Split to Mostar on a day trip. These are bus, driving or an organised tour. There are currently no trains operating from Split to Mostar.

If your goal is to reduce your Balkans travel cost as much as possible then it is theoretically possible to take a bus from Split to Mostar.

However, you need to be prepared to spend the majority of your day on the bus as border crossings can take time and it makes it more or less impossible to visit any attractions outside of Mostar.

In the best-case scenario, the bus will take 4 hours one way, though our journey ended up being closer to 5 hours as we got delayed at the border.

If you want to take the bus to get from Split to Mostar then I suggest spending a night or two in Mostar rather than doing a day trip. If you’re insistent on only visiting Mostar for a day then I suggest taking one of the two options listed below instead.

Stari Most in Mostar

The best way to do a Split to Mostar day trip independently is by renting a car and driving. This will allow you to enjoy some of the stops on the route, get across the border quicker and have the flexibility to go and leave when you want.

We suggest using Rentalcars.Com to find deals on car hire in Split or Croatia in general. They aggregate results across major car hire brands.

Make sure to pay close attention to your policy when booking to ensure that the company allows you to take the car across borders. You’ll also need a green card when crossing into Bosnia to prove that you have the appropriate insurance coverage — the car rental company should provide this for you.

By Day Tour

If you prefer not to drive, then taking a Split to Mostar day tour with a guide is a great option. This allows you to leave Split early in the morning without worrying about driving and make maximum use of your time in Mostar.

This guided tour or this guided tour is a great choice as it gives you some free time to explore Mostar independently, as well as a guided tour of the town and stops in Počitelj & Kravice National Park.

If you want to combine your Mostar day trip with a stop in the Christian pilgrimage site of Medjugorje, then this day tour or this day tour follows a similar itinerary to the above tour but gives visitors the option to visit Medjugorje instead of Kravice National Park.

There is also this guided tour available which dedicates more time in Medjugorje rather than visiting Počitelj & Kravice National Park. It is also possible to go on a private tour that picks you up in Split and drops you off in Dubrovnik.

If you’re planning to go on a guided tour from Split to Mostar, keep in mind that a lot of tours don’t run in the winter months.

Mostar Old Town is quieter in the evening

Mostar Day Trip Itinerary

If you’re planning to do your Mostar day trip from Split independently, then this suggested itinerary should help you make the most of your time exploring Mostar.

Visit Počitelj

After leaving Split early in the morning and crossing the border from Croatia to Bosnia & Herzegovina, it’s worth stopping in the town of Počitelj.

Built in the 14th century, the walled town combines medieval and Ottoman influences and has historically been an important strategic site. It’s also currently on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.

It’s worth making a quick stop here on the way to Mostar to walk around the town and see the unique architecture here. Take the time to climb up the steep stairs to the fortress to enjoy great views of the Neretva River and the surrounding area.

The town of Počitelj

Enjoy a Bosnian Coffee

You might be tired after an early morning start from Split so after driving from Počitelj to Mostar, make your first stop in town be for a traditional Bosnian coffee.

While you can get a Bosnian coffee from a lot of places in Mostar, I suggest heading to Cafe de Alma which is located near the Hamman Museum and not far from the Stari Most.

The cafe here roasts and grinds its own beans and the owner will take the time to sit with you and explain exactly how to drink a Bosnian coffee and what makes it unique from other similar varieties of coffee. There is an extreme passion for coffee here, so if you only have time for one Bosnian coffee during your visit to Mostar, make sure that it’s here!

Traditional Bosnian coffee

Explore the Old Town

Mostar’s Old Town is fairly compact so a day will give you enough time to enjoy the highlights of the city.

Your first stop should undoubtedly be the Stari Most – Mostar’s iconic bridge. While it was completely destroyed during the Balkans wars in the 90s, it has since been rebuilt in its original form.

One of the most iconic sites here is to see the local divers ply their craft and jump into the Neretva river. The local divers will spend a lot of the day pretending as if they’re about to jump to collect some money to support their diving club.

However, if you’re lucky, some dives occur a few times per day – we saw one at noon but aren’t sure if the timings are consistent.

If you’re interested in taking the approximately 22-metre plunge yourself, you can visit the diving club located on the bridge and they will put you through your paces to see whether it is safe for you to do so.

Divers jumping from Stari Most

Aside from the Stari Most, it’s worth taking the time to explore other areas of the Old Town such as the Crooked Bridge which is a small version of the Old Bridge and used as practice for diving from the Stari Most. There are also some bazaars in the Old Town on both sides of the bridge where you can pick up souvenirs.

If you want to enjoy great views of the city, there are a few different options including climbing the minaret of the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque, visiting the Stari Most Museum, walking over to the Lucki Most which is the next bridge over from Stari Most or enjoying a drink at Caffe Terasa.

Finally, it’s worth taking the time to learn more about the tragic history of Mostar and Bosnia in general during the 90s, particularly if you’re not planning on visiting Sarajevo. Some options include visiting the War Photo Museum or the Museum Of War And Genocide Victims.

If you want to take the time to learn more about Mostar’s history with a knowledgeable guide, then I highly recommend travellers go on a walking tour with Sheva.

Sheva does an incredible job of showing visitors around Mostar, taking time to explore the Old Town as well as break down the complicated history of the Balkans war and the impact it still has on residents living in Mostar today.

Sheva runs free walking tours a couple of times per day during peak season though the timing of the tours might not be convenient if visiting for a day. You can, however, contact him to organise a private tour that will likely be more suitable if you’re only visiting Mostar for a day.

The Crooked Bridge

Taste traditional Bosnian food

All that exploring will undoubtedly leave you hungry, so make sure you leave time to enjoy some traditional Bosnian cuisine while on your Mostar day trip from Split.

One good option for lunch is a restaurant called Food House which is located a short walk from the Stari Most.

They serve both traditional Bosnian food as well as international food with vegetarian and vegan options available. They have a Sultan’s Feast menu option which can be ordered for one or several people and allows you to sample several traditional Bosnian dishes.

Another good restaurant option for traditional Bosnian food is Hindin Han which has a lovely terrace to enjoy your meal and serves authentic Bosnian dishes.

Restaurant Hindin Han

Swim in Kravice Waterfall

After departing Mostar but before crossing the border back into Croatia, it’s worth taking the time to stop at Kravice Waterfall and enjoy a swim in the waterfalls if the weather allows it!

Kravice Waterfall is a smaller version of the waterfalls you’ll find in Krka National Park in Croatia (which is another great day trip from Split! ) and is a refreshing way to end your day in Mostar particularly in the summer months when temperatures are higher.

The waterfall is open until 10 pm in the summer months with entrance costing 20KM (approximately €10).

Kravice Waterfall

Have more time?

If you’re not rushed for time, then I definitely recommend spending at least one or two nights in Mostar to be able to enjoy the town fully and spread your tourist dollars more. Also, crowds thin out in the evening as day-trippers leave and it’s a lot more pleasant to walk around in the evening and enjoy Mostar’s atmosphere.

This will also allow you to take one of Sheva’s free walking tours (though make sure to tip at the end!) rather than organising a private tour as well as giving you more time to visit museums that you don’t get a chance to see on a day trip.

There are also some great places to visit in the evening in Mostar such as the Craft Beer Garden imaimože which has an excellent range of craft beers from their own brewery in Mostar as well as other breweries in Bosnia.

You also have the option of visiting Blagaj which is a small village near Mostar famous for its 600-year-old monastery.

Where to Stay in Mostar

Hostel Majdas   – This is a great hostel to stay in Mostar for backpackers looking to meet other travellers and enjoy some great Bosnian hospitality. The daily breakfast is one of the best you’ll ever have in a hostel and Majda’s brother, Bata, runs a fantastic day tour to Mostar’s nearby attractions as well as explaining the complicated history of the city.

Hotel Eden – If you prefer to stay in a hotel, this place is a great option located in the centre of the city. They offer a range of clean modern private rooms with breakfast included daily as well as access to a pool, sauna and fitness centre.

Help please . Taking a day trip from Split to Mostar but wondering how to manage with the different currencies please. Do they take Euro or Kuna or cards. All info appreciated

In Bosnia, the currency is the Bosnian mark (BAM). Some shops might take Euro or Kuna in Mostar but it will typically be at an unfavorable exchange rate.

How to Take a Split Mostar Day Trip

There are three ways to do day trips from Split to Mostar; drive, take the bus or go on one of the many tours that depart from Split. Below you can find out about each of these in detail.

Take the Bus

The bus journey takes around three to four hours including the border crossing between Croatia and Bosnia. The route hugs the Adriatic before heading up into the mountains and crossing into Bosnia.

As you travel along the coast the views are absolutely incredible, and a little hair-raising at times as the bus goes higher into the mountains. I did this trip in October 2022.

There are three daily buses at 07:30, 09:30 and 17:30. To get the most of your Split Mostar day trip taking the earliest bus is advisable.

Buses return to Split at 06:45 and 17:15.

Tickets cost from €18.00, plus €1.00 for luggage (to be paid to the driver). You can book this bus online with Flixbus .

The bus leaves from Split Bus Station which is located next to the port and a few minute’s walk from Diocletian’s Palace. Read more about how to take the Split to Mostar bus .

Day Trip to Mostar from Split

Taylor-Mostar1

During a Croatia vacation, there are plenty of epic day trips you can take from the country’s largest cities. One of the best day trips to take is from Split to Mostar . Located around two hours from Split, Croatia , Mostar , Bosnia and Herzegovina is the perfect city to explore, plus you can scratch off another country on your bucket list while you enjoy this great day trip!

Just like Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina is another beautiful country in the Balkans region of Europe. It was once part of the former Ottoman Empire as well as Yugoslavia . It gained independence in 1992 and nowadays, most of the population practices Islam. Other popular religions in Bosnia and Herzegovina are Orthodox Christianity and Roman Catholicism.

The beautiful city of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The country’s names Bosnia and Herzegovina have nothing to do with ethnic or religious reasons, the difference has to do with geography. Bosnia occupies the northern and central parts of the country and Herzegovina is situated in the southern and southwestern region. Most of Bosnia and Herzegovina is mountainous and there are three official languages – Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian.

In August 2021, I did a memorable Balkans trip with Ashley of World to Wander . We started our journey in Venice, Italy before enjoying a weekend in Slovenia . From there, we made our way back to Trieste, Italy before heading into Croatia where we spent two nights in Istria , two nights in Split , one night in Hvar and four nights in Dubrovnik .

A woman walking over the Mostar Bridge in Bosnia

Ashley and I also did a day trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park from Pula to Split (it was out of the way) as well as day trips to Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina from Split and Kotor , Montenegro from Dubrovnik . We also enjoyed a lovely day on the island of Korcula from Hvar to Dubrovnik. No matter how you plan your trip and what your itinerary entails, all these spots in the Balkans and the surrounding countries are incredible to adventure around and explore!

In this article, discover the best Mostar itinerary during a day trip from Split .

Traveling from Split to Mostar:

Day trip to Mostar from Split

The easiest and most convenient ways to get from Split, Croatia to Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina is by renting a car or taking a train or bus . If you’re looking to explore more of the country and stay longer, you can take a flight into Mostar International Airport or Sarajevo International Airport , which is the capital. You can find affordable flights through Skyscanner .

During our time in Split, Ashley and I rented a car to get around, which I highly recommend if you’re looking to explore the Balkans. The drive from Split to Mostar is easy and a little over two hours. (Please know that you will need to go through border patrol to get from Croatia to Bosnia and back. The customs line can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. Thankfully, the line was short for us.)

One thing to note about renting a car in Croatia (or anywhere in the European Union) is that you will need to have an international diver’s permit in addition to your regular license. I don’t know how the process works for every single country out there, but for U.S. residents, you could easily obtain one by going to your local AAA office.

When we first arrived in the city, we easily found street parking near the Aleksa Santic Monument . (It was free the day we went, but I recommend asking around and doing your research to see if you have to pay for parking. There is paid street parking in specific areas of Mostar.) There are also parking garages that you can park at for a fee.

The old town of Mostar in Bosnia

Mostar is a great city to walk around in. The Old Town is small, but if you’re looking to explore outside of it, I recommend renting a bike. You can also haul a city taxi to get around Mostar. Uber does not exist in Kotor.

In addition to visiting Mostar from Split , I recommend paying a visit to the capital of Sarajevo . The capital city is located a little over two hours northeast of Mostar. You can get there with a rental car along with public transportation .

You can also do a private tour from Split to Mostar !

Where to Stay in Mostar:

Beautiful architecture in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Since we did a day trip from Split to Mostar, we didn’t need accommodations in Bosnia , but there are a lot of great hotels to choose from if you decide to stay a night or more. Overall, most of the hotels in Mostar are mid-budget, but you can find a lot of great budget options as well.

Here are the best places to stay in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina:

Luxury Accommodation: Hotel Verso

Boutique Accommodation: Hotel-Restaurant Kriva Ćuprija

Mid-Budget Accommodation: Hotel Mepas

Budget Accommodation: Taso’s House

Bosnia and Herzegovina also offers a plethora of Airbnb and Vrbo options.

Learn About the History of Bosnia and Herzegovina:

One of the top things to do during your day trip in Mostar is visit a museum. For a long time through the mid 1990’s, Bosnia and Herzegovina was under an ethnic cleansing where thousands of people were either killed or displaced.

There was international intervention that got in the way of all the Bosnian conflict, which finally led to a peace agreement called the Dayton Accords in later 1995. This agreement is what ended the war, but the country was still decentralized, ethnically divided and in despair.

As you make your way around Mostar, you will find buildings that were bombed, walls with bullet holes in them as well as memorials and artifacts that bring remembrance to the war. It is quite sad and surreal seeing all the destroyed buildings and memorials as you wander around the city. Nowadays, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a great country to visit and the city of Mostar is safe for all!

Mostar is in the Herzegovina part of the country. In fact, it was once the capital city of Herzegovina! Some of the best ways to learn about the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina during your day trip to Mostar from Split is to either enjoy a private walking tour or visit one of the city’s renowned museums:

Learning about the Bosnian War during a day trip to Mostar from Split

  • War Photo Exhibition : During the time of the war in Bosnia, a photojournalist from New Zealand was living in Mostar and captured everything through photos. The War Photo Exhibition later opened up to showcase the pictures taken during that period. Overall, this museum is one of the best spots to learn more about the Bosnian War . Please note that it is a haunting place and will bring the war to life.
  • Bosnaseum : Bosnian culture is fascinating from both its Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian history. One of the top museums to learn about Bosnian culture and history, all in one place, is Bosnaseum . It is a great museum to also learn about the tradition of Bosnian people in Mostar.
  • Museum of War and Genocide Victims : Another museum in Mostar that is both educational and emotional is the Museum of War and Genocide Victims . This museum goes into the genocide, concentration camps and crimes against children that happened from 1992 through 1995. It also shows personal belongings, photos, court documents and more.
  • Museum of Herzegovina : Founded in 1950, the Museum of Herzegovina showcases the cultural and historical heritage of the city of Mostar along with the area of Herzegovina in general. Throughout this museum, you will find archeological and ethnographic exhibits and there is also a library.

Shop through the Čaršija:

Mostar's carsija

A day trip from Split to Mostar would not be complete without walking through and shopping around the čaršija , which is a Muslim bazaar .

Situated right next to Stari Most , which is the popular bridge in Mostar, is where you can find the čaršija. The area that the bazaar is in has always been where Muslims resided in the city. While you stroll around the čaršija, you will be brought back into the Ottoman times and feel like you’re strolling through a market in Morocco .

Some of the top things to purchase as you walk through Mostar’s čaršija is homemade copper items. You can also purchase Turkish rugs, Arabic jewelry, handmade Bosnian blankets and other souvenir items like postcards and magnets.

Walk Over and Under Stari Most:

A woman walking under the Stari Most in Bosnia

The most iconic landmark in Mostar is the Stari Most, which is also known as Mostar Bridge or the Old Bridge. This stunning stone bridge is built over the Neretva River and it was originally built in the 16 th Century during the Ottoman Empire.

Unfortunately, the bridge was destroyed during the Bosnian War in late 1993. Stari Most was later rebuilt and reopened for public usage in 2004. The reconstruction was funded by The World Bank , the United Nations , the Aga Khan Trust for Culture , the Council of Europe Development Bank and the World Monuments Fund . The bridge also received funding from the countries of Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Croatia and Bosnia. It is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

One of the epic things that Stari Most is known for is the Red Bull Cliff Diving Competition . Professional cliff jumpers will receive donations and once they reach a certain amount, they will jump from the bridge and into the river. Overall, this event attracts people from all over the world and it is exciting!

Discover All the Beautiful Spots in Mostar:

A woman walking over the Crooked Bridge during a day trip from Split to Mostar

Mostar is a fairytale city that you must explore. It is known for its Islamic architecture, stunning mosques, lovely bridges and more. During your day trip to Mostar from Split , I suggest taking the time to stroll around and admire all the beauty.

A memorable thing to do in Mostar as you make your way around the city is to climb Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque that overlooks the Old Town.

Overall, the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque represents one of the best architectural wonders of Ottoman culture and it is known as the most monumental Islamic Mosque in Mostar . It was built in the 17 th Century and should not be missed, even if you only see it from the outside.

Another beautiful landmark to see in Mostar is Kriva Cuprija , otherwise known as the Crooked Bridge . It is another ancient bridge that resembles the larger Stari Most.

It is unknown who built the Crooked Bridge and when it was constructed, but just like Stari Most, it was destroyed during the war and rebuilt in 2001. The reconstruction project was sponsored by the Grand Dutch of Luxembourg .

Savor Delicious Bosnian Food:

Traditional Bosnian cuisine in Mostar

Food plays a huge role when it comes to travel and even during a day trip, it is best to visit an authentic restaurant and try traditional Bosnian food .

When it comes to Bosnian cuisine , it is like Turkish and Mediterranean food. It is a meat-heavy cuisine filled with delicious flavors and everything is usually served with soft pita bread and vegetables. Desserts are like those of Mediterranean cuisine as well with phyllo dough.

During our day trip from Split to Mostar, Ashley and I ate at Restoran Kaldrma , which is a traditional Bosnian restaurant that includes a rooftop overlooking the mosque, nearby mountains and Old Town.

While we ate at Restoran Kaldrma , I savored one of the best chicken kebab dishes I’ve ever eaten. It came with warm pita bread that was seasoned with incredible flavors. Ashley had the cevapi, which looks like mini sausages and are made with lamb and beef. It was served with pita bread as well. We enjoyed our Bosnian lunch with local wine.

Local Bosnian wine

Other popular Bosnian staples are burek, which is phyllo dough filled with meat, cheese or a spinach filling; begova corba, which is a slow-cooked chicken and vegetable soup; klepe, which is minced meat dumplings and baklava, which is a popular dessert that you will also find in Turkey and Greece.

Another popular thing to do in Mostar is enjoy Bosnian tea or coffee at Café de Alma . It is a cozy café to relax at and enjoy a nice morning or afternoon beverage.

Mostar, Bosnia looks so beautiful ~ the architecture and beautiful waters are so breathtaking. Love the Stari Most bridge. Absolutely beautiful with the river flowing underneath it! Mostar was a fascinating and memorable destination. The Stari Most bridge was an architectural marvel, and the city itself had a rich and complex history. I enjoyed exploring the old town and trying the local cuisine.

It really is beautiful there! I loved it so much. Would love to go back and explore more of Bosnia and Herzegovina! 🙂

7 top day trips from Split to see more of Croatia

Split is the perfect hub for day trips along the Adriatic Coast © NataliaDeriabina / iStockphoto / Getty Images

Alongside nearby Dubrovnik, Split draws travelers to the glittering Adriatic Coast of Croatia in droves, and the many attractions within the Roman city walls are just the start of the allure. With idyllic islands scattered offshore and a hinterland studded with castles, medieval towns and national parks, this historic city is the perfect stop for those who like their city breaks with bonus day trips.

With a few days to spare, you can find your own island in the sun, splash in thundering waterfalls in the hills, and discover medieval townships away from the (sometimes maddening) downtown crowds. Spring is the ideal time to visit this idyllic stretch of coastline before the summertime hordes arrive.

Inexpensive car hire is available from local companies and there are excellent local bus services, so getting there and back at the end of the day is easy too. Here are our seven favorite day trips from Split to explore more of the Adriatic Coast.

Trogir offers medieval magic less than an hour from Split

Just along the coast from Unesco-listed Diocletian’s Palace in Split is another wonderful World Heritage wonder – historic Trogir , fêted for its extraordinarily well-preserved Romanesque and Renaissance architecture and unique and beautiful location. The old town sits on a small island, separated by narrow channels from the mainland on one side and from forested Čiovo Island on the other. It's a charming jumble of imposing fortifications, leafy gardens and seafront promenades.

Trogir has a laid-back vibe, and is a lovely place to while away a few hours, either wandering through the narrow marble-paved streets or sitting in a seafront cafe watching the world go by. The town’s showpiece is St Lawrence’s Cathedral , which has some incredibly ornate and beautiful carvings around the door and inside the Chapel of St Ivan. The views from the tower are well worth the thigh-busting climb.

How to get to Trogir: It takes about 40 minutes to drive west along the coast to Trogir from Split. There’s a direct intercity bus, or in summer you can catch the shuttle boat run by Bura Line .

The sun sets behind towering mountains, as the Cetina river flows through Omiš ©Andrey Omelyanchuk / 500px

Omiš is steeped in seafaring history

The legendary pirates’ lair of Omiš has a dramatic location at the mouth of the Cetina river, where freshwater carves its way through a maze of towering limestone outcrops to reach the Adriatic sea. In the Middle Ages, pirates based here terrorized the surrounding coastal and island communities, using special ships known as sagitta s , which had very shallow keels, allowing the pirates to withdraw beyond the underwater fortifications at the mouth of the river that kept larger ships out at sea.

The pirates constructed two medieval fortresses high above the town to protect it from attackers, and both can be visited for grand views over the town, if your legs can take the climb. It’s also well worth taking an excursion up the Cetina river; the most sedate option is a river cruise, stopping off in a riverside restaurant on the way to sample local specialties such as frogs, eels and snails.

To get the adrenaline pumping, sign up for whitewater rafting on the rapids a little further upstream. You’ll paddle your way through turquoise waters that carve a channel through a lush valley, with tall mountains on either side. Another exciting way to enjoy the spectacular scenery is shooting down the canyon by zipline . Eight wires of varying length and steepness zigzag through the gorge, crossing the river several times on the way.

How to get to Omiš : Omiš is a 40-minute drive east of Split via the coastal highway. City bus 60 heads here every half hour from central Split.

Boats in the harbor in the village of Maslinica, Croatia

Šolta is a charming island getaway that oozes Adriatic charm

Often overlooked by tourists in favor of its more famous neighbors, the bucolic island of Šolta is ideal for anyone who wants to get away from it all. The island’s most attractive settlements are the seaside towns of Maslinica and Stomorska, which wrap around pretty harbors at opposite ends of the island. Maslinica is the ritzier of the two, with a yacht marina and a luxurious hotel in a restored castle. Stomorska, the island’s oldest coastal settlement, has a more traditional vibe, and is a great place to eat a simple yet delicious lunch of grilled fish and vegetables right by the water.

Inland, the villages are less polished but no less charming, with cobbled streets and shuttered stone cottages, some worn and faded from centuries in the sun. Exploring them provides a great opportunity to sample the island’s local produce – bee and honey lovers will enjoy a visit to  Tverdić Honey in Grohote, while top-quality olive oil is available at Olynthia in Gornje Selo. Also in Gornje Selo, Agroturizam Kaštelanac offers tastings of traditional dark red and innovative rose wines made with Dobričić grapes.

How to get to Šolta: Ferry company Jadrolinija has several ferries and catamarans each day from Split to the port of Rogač. From there you can explore the island by bus, bicycle or even on foot.

Tourists swim in the Krka River in the Krka National Park, Croatia

Krka National Park is one of Croatia's loveliest places to splash

Extending along the scenic Krka River,  Krka National Park  runs from the Adriatic coast near Šibenik to the rugged mountains of the Croatian interior. It’s a magical place of waterfalls and gorges, with the river gushing at one point through a canyon 200m (656ft) deep. The highlight of the park is an hour-long loop following boardwalks that connect islands in the emerald-green river, ending at the park's largest waterfall,  Skradinski Buk .

This broad cascade drops almost 46m (151ft) before crashing into the lower lake, where visitors gather to splash and swim. Further north, the waterfalls of Roški Slap  are best visited on a boat tour. They begin with shallow steps that continue in a series of branches and islets to become 23m-high cascades.

The area’s remoteness attracted monks who constructed several monasteries here. Occupying a peaceful position above the river, Krka Monastery is the most important monastery for the Serbian Orthodox faith. Visit mid-June to mid-October to have a national park guide show you around the Byzantine and Mediterranean architecture. At other times you're welcome to visit the church and wander the lakeside path.

How to get to Krka National Park: Krka has five main entrances – at Skradin, Lozovac, Roški Slap, Krka Monastery and Burnum – and all are accessible by car but hard to reach by public transport. Allow about an hour to drive here from Split.

View of the Klis fortress near Split in Croatia

You can reach dramatic Klis Fortress in half an hour from Split

Just 7 miles (12km) from the city center, Klis Fortress makes for a perfect day excursion from Split, combining an atmospheric and historic castle with impressive views over the Dalmatian coastline. The fortress is spectacularly located high on a ridge, defending the valley that leads to Split. Cobbled ramps and walls zigzag up the hillside, with the castle’s towers and ramparts piled precipitously on top.

The most dramatic event in the fortress’s history happened in 1537, when Ottoman invaders captured Klis from local defenders and mounted their captain’s severed head on a spike. More recently, Klis shot to fame as a Game of Thrones filming location – the terraces and ramparts stood in for the city of Meereen, where Daenerys vengefully crucified the city’s slave masters.

Exploring the ruined castle is great fun, and there are displays of historic armor and weapons in the armory, and Game of Thrones filming stills in the artillery barracks. The fortress is a good spot for a picnic too – you can admire the views of Split and the surrounding islands while gentle breezes keep you delightfully cool. Alternatively, head to the village of Klis Grlo, just below the castle, which is famous for its spit-roast lamb, which is sold by the kilo and eaten with spring onions.

How to get to Klis Fortress: Klis Fortress is a 30-minute drive inland from Split, or you can catch a local bus from the city center, or visit on a guided tour.

A view from above of Hvar Town's square harbour, with the Pakleni Islands in the distance © Evgeniya Moroz / Shutterstock

Pretty Hvar is the definitive Adriatic island

With historic architecture, gorgeous swimming spots and lively nightlife, the beautiful island of Hvar is one of Croatia’s most popular destinations in its own right. Though it’s worth staying here at least a night or two if you can, it’s also possible to visit Hvar as a day trip from Split – you’ll want to get the fast catamaran direct to Hvar Town , the island’s largest and most charming settlement.

For a picture-perfect view of terracotta-roofed buildings clustered attractively around Hvar's square harbor, climb up to the ramparts of the medieval castle that looms high above the town. Then take a wander through the atmospheric streets of the old town, stopping to try the island’s delicious hvarska gregada (fish stew) at one of the harbor-side restaurants.

If you can tear yourself away from Hvar town, there are plenty of great ways to spend the rest of your day. Stroll along the seafront promenade to find yourself a great spot to swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic, or take a taxi boat out to one of the Pakleni Islands that lie just off the coast.

If you fancy something more active, & Adventure offers half-day kayaking, cycling and rock-climbing tours. Alternatively, get a feel for the less-visited interior of the island on a jeep safari through abandoned villages and lavender fields to the island’s highest point, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the whole island.

How to get to Hvar: The fastest way to Hvar from Split is by catamaran, which takes just over an hour. In summer (June to September), the earliest departure from Split is at 8:30am with Jadrolinija  with the last return at 9pm. Outside of the high season, if you want to visit Hvar from Split in a day, it’s probably best to take an organized tour.

Tourists watch a daredevil diving into the Neretva River in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

More medieval thrills await at Mostar in Bosnia and Hercegovina

This little cross-border jaunt will take you to Mostar , the largest city in Hercegovina, with a small but thoroughly enchanting old town center. Visitors gather to admire the Balkans' most celebrated bridge, Stari Most , which forms a majestic stone arc between medieval towers. The bridge's swooping arch was originally built between 1557 and 1566 on the orders of Suleiman the Magnificent.

In fact, the current structure is a very convincing 21st-century rebuild following the bridge's bombardment during the civil war in the 1990s. The span reopened in 2004 and is now a Unesco World Heritage site, famed for its bridge divers, who leap daringly into the deep waters 24m (79ft) below.

Make time for a stroll along narrow  Kujundžiluk , where historical stone-roofed shop-houses bustle joyously with trinket sellers offering inexpensive souvenirs. Beyond the cobbled lanes of the attractively restored Ottoman quarter are whole blocks of bombed-out buildings, a poignant legacy of the 1990s conflict.

The summer welcomes hordes of day-trippers, so, if you're able to stay into the evening, you'll be able to enjoy the lights of numerous millhouse restaurants that twinkle across gushing streams at dusk without the daytime crush of people.

How to get to Mostar:  The city of Mostar is around a 2.5-hour drive from Split and the trip here crosses the Croatia–Bosnia border, so be sure to bring your passport and visas (if needed). There are bus services, but they can take up to 4 hours, so hiring a car is a better option.

About Private Mostar Tour from Split

Our private day trip from Split to Mostar, Međugorje and Blagaj Tekke begins with our comfortable minivan picking you up at your accommodation in Split and then you will be on your way. Our first stop is Međugorje, which will take a little less than 3 hours. Međugorje was once a small wine making village which turned into a popular Catholic pilgrimage in the early 1980’s when the Virgin Mary appeared to some local children. Since that time the interest in Međugorje has grown exponentially, with thousands of visitors flocking to Međugorje each year. While in town be sure to climb Apparition Hill, the site where the children saw and communicated with the Virgin Mary, follow the stations of the cross up Kriz (cross) mountain and pay a visit to Church of St James.

From Međugorje, it’s a short ride to Mostar where you will see its most famous site the Stari Most bridge. Our guide will be waiting for you during your free time in Mostar after showing you the gem of Mostar Old Town – Stari Most bridge. The bridge was built in the 16th century and was considered one of the best examples of Ottoman architecture for that time. The bridge has been an important part of Mostar’s history for centuries, and the city itself was named after the bridge keepers, Mostari, who kept guard of the bridge.

During your free time you will have the chance to explore Mostar on your own. Use this time to take a lunch break and try some cevapcici at one of the local restaurants, sample strong Turkish coffee at one of the cafés that overlook the bridge and have your camera ready, so you can take a photo of one of the divers as they dive off the bridge into the Neretva River.

After our time in Mostar, we head to the nearby village of Blagaj to visit the mysterious Tekke Blagaj. Founded by a Dervish order in the 16th Century, the Tekke Blagaj is a place of worship which is performed by special ritual. The Tekke is located at the source of the Buna River, adding to its mystique. Restaurants line the river leading up to the Tekke which serves amazing grilled trout for anyone still feeling peckish.

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes : Be prepared for considerable walking along wooden pathways and trails. They are also often slippery!

During the summer season, buses are available throughout the day, but in the off-season, they run less frequently, so it’s important to check schedules in advance on the Bookaway website.

If you visit Plitvice as part of an organized tour, you will travel by coach. The journey takes about the same time as traveling by bus.

If you drive to Plitvice, you can take the old national road D1 or the new highway A1. We recommend taking the highway A1 because it’s shorter and safer.

You can enter the A1 at the Dugopolje junction and exit at the Gornja Ploca junction. From there, you’ll join the national road D1 that will take you directly to the entrance of the Plitvice National Park.

Park either at Entrance 2 (closer when coming from the direction of Split) or Entrance 1, which is only 3 km north of Entrance 2. We recommend starting the tour at Entrance 1.

14. white-water rafting

Rafting in Croatia, raft with people

Rafting on the Cetina River is one of the most popular outdoor adventures in Croatia, and one of our favorite day trips from Split . And there are no excuses not to try it!

First, Omis, a small coastal town where white-water rafting awaits you, is a gem for all kinds of adventures (rafting, canoeing, canyoning, zip-lining …), and it’s only 20 km south of Split.

Second, haven’t you always been dreaming about putting that wet suit on?! Everybody simply looks… well … ridiculously funny!

Third, this is one of those places where, as an adult, you can scream … along with your adult companions in the raft.

All jokes aside, rafting on the Cetina River is a must. It doesn’t take any previous experience to do this tour. The course is 4-hours long, but it’s not all paddling. It also includes a few short stops along the way for swimming (only for those who don’t fret cold waters), cliff jumping, and resting.

We recommend this rafting tour with cliff jumping!

Many agencies offer rafting on the river, with a transfer from and to Split. Prices go from €50 ($55, £43) without a transfer to €70 (77 $, £60) with transfer included .

15. Zip-line over Cetina Canyon

A woman hanging on zip line over Cetina canyon

Note for all: For those who haven’t done it yet – zip-lining is awesome! For those who have done it already – you know what I’m talking about!

When in Split, don’t miss on zip-lining across the Cetina River Canyon . The site is a short 20 km ride from Split (in summer it takes 45 minutes by car because of heavy traffic between Split and Omis).

Once there, you’ll have a choice of eight lines , each of different lengths, heights, and speeds. At the fastest wire, you can catch a speed of up to 65 km per hour. All that while hanging 150 m above the ground and admiring fantastic views over the canyon.

Do a tour on your own if you have a car to reach the site. But make sure you book at least two days in advance. You can do so through the Zip-line Croatia website . The price is 65€ ($72, £56) per person.

If you’d rather have organized transport, consider a guided tour. We recommend this Cetina River Zipline Experience !

16. Canyoning

If you search for even more adrenaline rush than rafting, zip-lining, or sky-diving, try canyoning during your time in Split?

A short drive from Split, you can choose between two sites to try your hand at canyoning: Badnjevica, and Cetina.

Badnjevica is more popular among locals than tourists. It’s a lovely canyon of river Suvaja, in Imotski region.

Canyoning in Badnjevica includes hiking through the forest and shallow water, abseiling down a 17 m-long waterfall, swimming, and cliff jumping. You can find more info on the Split Adventures website .

Cetina canyoning is one of the best outdoor activities near Split. You can choose between standard and extreme canyoning. Both tours start in the village of Zadvarje where you get a safety brief.

Afterward, guides take you to the starting point where you start the adventure with repelling down a cliff into the water.

The tours combine some hiking, rope lowering, cliff jumping, swimming, and floating down the river pushed by streams, and rapids.

Bear in mind that the tour takes around 5 hours (including a transfer from and to Split). Bring a good pair of hiking shoes , the rest of the equipment is provided (even shoes are provided, but we prefer wearing our shoes).

The temperature of the water is anywhere between 15 °C and 17 °C, depending on the season.

Lots of agencies offer this day trip, like Adventure Dalmatia, and Split Adventure.

Prices go from €50 ($55, £43) without a transfer to €70 (77 $, £60) with transfer included.

The prices for standard canyoning on Cetina River go from €50 ($55, £43) per person without transfer to €70 (77 $, £60) per person with transfer from Split included.

Cetina River extreme canyoning , on the other hand, costs €75 ($83, £64) per person without transfer, or €95 ($105, £81) per person with transfer included.

17. Canoe safari

You must have figured out by now that Cetina River is THE place for outdoor enthusiasts visiting Split, Croatia.

Canoe safari is basically rafting in calm waters, and in summer, waters on Cetina are rather calm. This means that canoe safari is more appropriate than rafting at this time of the year.

The canoe safari tour lasts a bit less than four hours, but worry not, you don’t spend all the time paddling. The course is just over ten kilometers, and it includes a few swimming stops along the way.

Prices start at €45 ($50, £39) per person. Check availability here!

18. River tubing

When you feel lazy but still want to experience some outdoor activities, river tubing comes as an ideal adventure.

River tubing on Cetina River is fun. It requires a minimum fitness level (Yay for that!) . And if you are anything like me, you prefer sports that include lying down.

River tubing happens at a calm part of river Cetina, along a 3 km long course . There are few rapids to push you down the stream, but for the rest you’ll be floating down the river, relaxing in your tube, admiring lovely scenery.

19. Explore the countryside with ATV

ATV quads, mount Kozjak, Split Croatia

A quad ride through the abandoned villages in the mountains above Split is another adventure in Split worth taking. The ride gives you an opportunity to experience a different Croatia, far from the main tourist sites.

You’ll drive through half-abandoned villages , stop at the heights of mountains for spectacular views , and end your tour with a lovely picnic before heading back to Split.

Book This Half-Day ATV Tour Here!

20. Jeep Safari

Two jeeps on a path in Mosor Mountain

We’ve just given you an idea of hiking Mosor Mountain. But, maybe you aren’t keen on hiking unknown mountains on your own. Or, you aren’t in shape for hiking at all. Still, you too would like to experience Split’s hinterland  and fresh mountainous air. Don’t worry!

Get onboard a jeep, for an exciting ride on Mosor Mountain. The tour takes you along the south slopes of Mosor to the abandoned villages in the hinterland. You’ll also have a chance to experience an off-road drive along the mountain, as well as to visit some typical villages and enjoy a BBQ by the river. Highly recommended! More information here …

Hi all. I’m trying to decide between a day trip to Mostar versus going to Omis for white water rafting. We are traveling with teenagers so the white water rafting does look a little bit more enticing. But I would love your thoughts on which experience would be better as a day trip. I understand they are two totally different experiences.

mostar trip from split

If I remember correctly you are visiting in June so Mostar is bound to be quite crowded with day trippers. Best to have an overnight there if possible to experience it after the tour buses have left. I think most teens (including my own, although we havent done the Omis rafting) would prefer the rafting. We spent a night in Mostar and while they found it a little interesting (liked watching the bridge jumpers) they got quite bored and grumpy. You know your kids best though...some may really enjoy culture/history etc If its hot weather, a water based activity would be a better idea.

mostar trip from split

To Mostar you can include a stop at Kravice falls. There's swimming there in a lagoon at the base of the falls. In Mostar you can take this donation basis walking tour:

https://www.mostarfreewalkingtours.com/

You can pay a small charge and climb up the stairs of the minaret at Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque for an unmatched view of the bridge. As you stroll the pedestrian zone be sure to continue walking past this mosque and onto the pedestrian street called Brace Fejica for an experience of locals at street cafes and shops. As you leave Mostar to head back to Split if you have time and desire you can stop at Blagaj Dervish Monastery.

We’re going early July. We plan to hire a driver or book some kind of tour rather than drive ourselves. We’re also spending a night in plitvice so I feel like kravice falls may be over kill.

Mostar on its own has NOTHING to do with white water rafting - it starts on the river Neretva above Konjic, town 70 km (road distance) N of Mostar. Closer to Mostar and near Kravicxe falls, you can do the kayaking on Trebizat river

How about the zip line at Omis instead?

Or Canyoning in the Cetina river's gorge by Omis?

Is there something wrong with white water rafting there? LOL! It looks like the rapids are a class 2-3 which doesn't seem that crazy. We did class 4 in zambabwe. No one really seems to be recommending it though. We love adventure so the zipline sounds good too. Now I'm wondering if we can do both.

As I said our "kids" have never done the rafting at Omis but this company does both in one day. Its not cheap though...
