Tips on What to Wear in Egypt

What to wear in egypt.

The official religion of Egypt is Islam and 90% of those are Sunni Muslims. This means that most Egyptian women are dressed very modestly. They cover their shoulders, knees, and often their hair. This isn’t always the case, however, and some more upscale Cairo neighborhoods tend to have more progressive views on attire.

As a western woman traveling to Egypt, you will undoubtedly get a lot of attention from men. And if you choose not to cover up, you can expect a plethora of stares and catcalls. I would highly recommend that you leave the tank tops and shorts at home and opt to follow the local customs and cover-up as well.

Remember, you’re not here to change the culture, you’re here to experience a new one.

TIP: If you are staying in a resort on the beach the rules do not apply. Foreigners often lounge in swimsuits and summer dresses in hotels and resorts around Sharm El-Sheikh, Hurghada , and all the coastal resort towns of Egypt.

Weather in Egypt

Egypt is considered to have a hot desert climate. Depending on where you go there will be variations but you can generally expect temperatures in the winter months to range from 60-72°F and those can climb well over 100°F in the summer months.

The sun can be absolutely sweltering in the summertime, so if you visit during this time you will want to be near air conditioning or a pool. But you’ll find that tourist sites are less crowded and prices are generally lower as it is the off-season.

October until April is considered the high season in Egypt as the weather is more bearable. While the temperatures are more manageable during the day, the evenings can get quite cold. You’ll want to be sure to pack a sweater and possibly a raincoat.

Check the dates of Ramadan prior to planning your trip to Egypt. Ramadan takes place in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. During that month Muslims fast from dawn until dusk so it is considered very rude for foreigners to be seen eating or drinking in public. Many restaurants and shops close during that time and others operate on a reduced schedule. As a foreigner, it may not be the ideal time to travel to a Muslim-majority country.

Be sure to read about the things I wish I’d known prior to visiting Egypt to prepare for your trip!

Egypt Visa and Passport Requirements

Many countries are eligible to obtain a visa on arrival at Egyptian ports of entry, including the US, the UK, EU Nationals, Australia, Canada, Croatia, Croatia, Georgia, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Macedonia, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Serbia, and Ukraine.

Your visa will cost $25.00 USD per person and will need to be purchased in cash. Specifically in US dollars. If you don’t have US dollars for the visa, you can exchange your currency at the same counter.

Make sure that the expiration date on your passport is at least six months from your date of entry to Egypt, otherwise, you may be denied entry.

Thank you so so much for all of your Egypt posts! We’re heading there in 2 weeks and I was totally lost as to what to pack. What did your boyfriend/husband wear while you were there? Were shorts acceptable for men?

travel luggage egypt

Hey Nichole! So glad that you found our post helpful!

Nick (my husband) wore pants for most of the trip. While it is perfectly acceptable to wear shorts – except when visiting a mosque – it seemed like almost all the locals wear pants. So if you want to stay cool wear shorts, but if you want to blend in wear pants. Nick likes ABC Pants from lululemon – they’re very comfortable even in hot weather.

Also, we were there in December so it was not nearly as hot as it will be when you visit – we actually found it to be rather chilly a few evenings after the sun set. And if you’re visiting the coastal resort towns like Sharm El Sheikh or Hughada you’ll find it much more common to dress as you would in Europe or the USA.

travel luggage egypt

Hi, Thanks for sharing! You mentioned leaving your tank tops at home but in your photos youre wearing a tank top dress. Were there any issues (unwanted attention)? You must have felt comfortable exposing your shoulders and arms? TIA!

Hey Reanna… Thanks for reading! Val only uncovered her arms for a quick photo, she always wore a scarf over her sleeveless dresses. She wouldn’t have shown her shoulders in public, or she definitely would’ve gotten some unwanted attention from Egyptian men.

travel luggage egypt

Thanks for all this helpful information! You mentioned leaving your laptop at home. Is there a specific reason for that or was it just easier to not have to account for the space it takes up when packing?

travel luggage egypt

Hey Jon – I’d say it’s a combination of space in the bag, the potential of something happening to your laptop in transit, and general safety of having it on your person or in your hotel room. After a few years of travel we generally utilize the hotel room safe (just in case) and often laptops won’t fit inside. And, unless you’re working, do you REALLY need to bring it?

What to Pack to Egypt | What to Bring on Your Journey to Egypt

What to pack to Egypt?  What Should You Bring with You to Egypt? How should I dress in Egypt? It would help to think about these things as you plan your trip to Egypt.

But don't be confused; it's easy to understand. In this article, we tried to list most of the things you'll need on vacation in Egypt.

A trip through Egypt will take you to a legendary place to see some of the most amazing things people have ever done.

Egypt is a country that spans two continents and has many exciting things to learn about. Some of the best things to see in the country are the Nile River, especially in Luxor and Aswan, Cairo's famous pyramids , and the historic Red Sea .

travel luggage egypt

When you go to Egypt, you will see many different ways of life. But the country is very well set up to welcome people from all over the world.

If you want to learn about Egyptian culture, there are two essential things to remember as you pack your bags.

  • First: The climate of Egypt.
  • Second: The religion to which the population belongs.

Here are some tips on what to bring to Egypt so you don't do anything wrong or rude while there.

What to Pack for Egypt?

Travel luggage.

Choose luggage that is easy to spot on the luggage belt and very safe for your trip to Egypt.

Carry-On Bag

If you check your bags, you'll need a carry-on bag on the plane with a few necessities. It is also small enough to be a "personal item" if you fly to Egypt without checking your luggage.

Extra Duffel Bag

Egypt is a great place to shop, and it's impossible to go there and not buy a few souvenirs to bring back home. Invest in this "just in case" duffel bag to ensure you have enough space for your new treasures. It's very light and folds up so small that it doesn't take up much room in your bag. And it's vital to fill it with your new Egyptian gifts.

Travel Pillow

Unless you're in business class, you'll probably have trouble sleeping on the flight to Egypt. This travel pillow is small, light, and very comfortable, and it will keep you from falling asleep on your neighbor's shoulder.

Electronics to Pack for Egypt

What to pack to Egypt

Egypt has so many incredible old ruins to photograph that you would be doing yourself a disservice if you only used your phone camera.

Universal Travel Adapter

If you are traveling from the United States to Egypt, you will need a converter to charge your electronics. Buy a universal adapter with multiple USB ports in most countries and charge multiple devices simultaneously.

You'll probably use Google Maps on your phone all day to find your way around Egypt. And your GPS uses up your battery faster than anything else. Use a power bank to keep your phone charged all day.

Earbuds or Headphone

Travel gear organizer.

With a gear organizer, you can keep your chargers, cables, earbuds, and other items for Egypt in one place. Please keep it in your carry-on to easily play it on the plane.

Toiletries to Pack for Egypt

Almost every city in Egypt has a pharmacy, so don't worry if you forget something. But here are some health and beauty items you'll want to bring with you to Egypt:

  • Face-washing
  • Cream for the face and body
  • The shampoo and conditioner
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss for your teeth
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Any prescriptions
  • Brush for hair and hair ties
  • Hair dryer for travel
  • Two tools in one: curling iron and straightener for travel

Accessories for Egypt

travel luggage egypt

Shoulder Bag

Keeping a close eye on your things in big cities is always a good idea. You can keep your cash and credit cards close to your body, and hard to get to in a cross-body bag with a zip closure.

Since Islam is the main religion, you'll see a lot of beautiful mosques while you're there. Keep a scarf in your purse to cover your head before entering.

During the day, when it is hot, you will need a hat and sunscreen to walk around the Pyramids of Giza. It would help if you did what you could to protect yourself from the sun in Egypt.

If you want to protect yourself from the sun, don't forget to bring your sunglasses. Choose a pair with UV protection and polarisation to protect your eyes from the sun's rays. Don't forget to bring a sturdy case to keep them safe in your carry-on.

Clothing to Pack for Egypt

In the summer, Egypt can get much hotter than 45 c, and the sun never stops shining in the desert for most of the year. Dresses that are long and have a loose fit will keep you cool and cover you up.

Pack at least four comfortable, loose-fitting dresses so you don't have to worry about finding a laundry service while on vacation.

Sweater Warm

No matter what time of year you go to Egypt, you should always bring a sweater. You'll use it for cool nights or extra protection during your trip. Choose something simple, light, and not too big because it will take up a lot of space in your bag.

Egypt is usually very hot during the day, but the temperature can drop quickly when the sun goes down. Make sure to bring a few pairs of pants, so you don't get cold when you go out at night.

And bring at least one more pair that is stretchy, comfortable, and can be dressed up or down depending on what you're doing that day.

What to pack to Egypt

Comfortable Closed-Toe Flats

Egypt's streets can be very bumpy and dusty, so if you wear flip-flops, your feet will probably be dirty by the end of the day. And you should bring several pairs of shoes to Egypt because you will walk a lot.

Pack a pair of boots with dresses and casual shoes for days you will walk a lot. Don't wear white shoes because Egypt is dusty and won't look the same when you get home.

Other Important Clothes to Bring to Egypt:

  • Bring a swimsuit and a cover-up if your hotel has a pool or you're going to the beach.
  • Flip-flops for the beach or the pool.
  • Bring gym clothes and shoes if your hotel has a gym.
  • Every day, one pair of underwear.
  • Every day, one pair of socks.

Travel Safety and First Aid

Like many other countries, Egypt requires a valid passport and enough blank pages to put the country's entry and exit stamps.

It is important to note that some countries need a visa to enter Egypt. Getting a visa is usually a simple process. In some countries, you can buy the visa when you arrive at the airport or ask for it in advance at the Egyptian embassy in your country. The most important thing is that you can check the website of the Egyptian consulate in your country to ensure you need a visa.

People from the US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, Croatia, Croatia, Georgia, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Macedonia, the Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Serbia, and Ukraine can get a visa when they arrive at an Egyptian port of entry.

Your visa will cost you $25 per person, and you must pay cash for it. In US dollars, to be exact. You can change your money at the same counter if you don't have US dollars for the visa.

Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months after the date you plan to enter Egypt. If it isn't, you may not be allowed to enter.

Travel Insurance

You need travel insurance if things (hopefully don't, but often do) go wrong.

Luggage Locks

Your stuff can get stolen from your suitcase, whether going through airport security, taking a bus or train, or staying at a hostel (or hotel).

If you need a specific medicine, you should bring it from your home country along with a prescription from your doctor. You should also know the active ingredients in case you need to buy something else; we might not be able to find the same brand we're used to.

What to Wear in Egypt ?

Egypt has high temperatures, so clothes should be light, fresh, and preferably light-colored to avoid the sun's intense rays.

The Muslim religion dramatically impacts how people dress, which is why it is so conservative, especially for women. This is especially true when going to places of worship.

Because of this, it is suggested:

What should women wear in Egypt?

As a woman traveling in Egypt, you must consider what you will wear. Egypt is a Muslim country, so Egyptian women don't dress like women in the West.

The truth is that there are no rules about how to dress in Egypt, but we think that if you dress in a certain way, you can avoid some uncomfortable situations.

We generally don't wear short pants or skirts, tank tops, tops with low necklines, or clothes that are too tight. We prefer to wear thin, loose-fitting pants that reach the knee and are more comfortable and relaxed.

From the top down, we like to wear T-shirts with wide sleeves and shoulders that are covered. Also, this way, we don't get burned by the Egyptian sun, which is vital.

If you want to go to a mosque, you might have to cover up if they think your clothes don't fit the place. Because of this, we usually keep a handkerchief in our backpacks, which is generally very useful in these situations.

We can't assume that this only happens in Muslim countries because if you go to a Catholic church or a Buddhist temple, you'll almost certainly have to wear certain clothes to get in.

If you go to the Red Sea's more touristy areas and want to use your hotel's facilities or swimming pool, you can wear a swimsuit or bikini, but you should avoid mini bikinis.

But if you're going to less touristy places where people aren't used to seeing tourists in bathing suits, it might be best to bathe with some clothes on (a T-shirt, for example).

For men: What to Wear in Egypt ?

It is better to wear long pants and not show skin, especially when we go out in public or want to go to the mosque. You can wear a short-sleeved shirt, but it's always a good idea to cover your shoulders and wear light, breathable clothing.

We often walk in Egypt and get exposed to dust and dirt, so wearing comfortable shoes is always a good idea.

Things can be slightly different when deciding what to wear in Egypt in October or November, especially at night, when things get more casual. We suggest wearing long sleeves and even a jacket.

General tips for Men & Women

  • When it comes to shoes, they have to be comfortable. A pair of slippers that can breathe will be enough to keep out dirt and dust, and a couple of sandals are all you need to relax.
  • Wearing a hat or cap and a good pair of dark glasses is essential to stay safe from the sun's heat. If we're near the water, we should also bring a swimsuit.
  • Bringing a coat or jacket at night is also good when the temperature drops.

When to Visit Egypt?

Egypt is a great place to visit any time of year because the weather is usually lovely. You might not want to go to Luxor and Aswan in the middle of summer, but you can always go to the Red Sea or Alexandria.

November to March is the best time for people who want winter sun, and there are usually fewer people, except when schools are on break. Egypt's winters are mild and sunny, except maybe in Alexandria, where it might rain.

April through May and September through October are the best times to visit Egypt, especially if you want to see the North and South. Now that it's warmer, you can go hiking and spend time at the beach.

If you don't mind the heat, June through August is the best time to go to the beach or pool in Egypt. This is the busiest time of year at the Red Sea, while temperatures over 40C degrees keep people away from Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan.

Highly Recommend Egypt Packing List

  • Swimsuit (prefer shorts for the beach and speedo for swimming pools and hotels and swimsuits for women) (choose shorts for the beach and speedo for swimming pools and hotels and swimsuits for women).
  • Most mosques have rules that say you have to take your shoes off.
  • Long pants are mostly worn on cool nights.
  • Cotton and technical fabrics in tank tops will keep you cool and light.
  • T-shirt made of technical fabric and cotton.
  • Clothes made of technical fabrics help keep your body temperature even and keep your clothes dry.
  • Long-sleeved shirt for cool nights or trips into the desert.
  • Lightweight scarf for traveling. The scarf is one of the most useful and comfortable things you can wear and will always come in handy.
  • Wear a hat during rush hour to keep the sun off your face.
  • Easy-to-carry raincoat.
  • Trekking or hiking shoes for trips into the desert, long walks on wet ground or stones that easily slip on.
  • You should wear rock shoes in the Red Sea or cities like Sharm El Sheik.
  • Most of the time, you will wear flip-flops or open rubber shoes.
  • Closed, lightweight shoes, especially for evening walks

When considering what to pack for your trip to Egypt to visit the pyramids, keep the harsh sun and religious customs in mind

While Egypt may not be as conservative as its neighbours in the Middle East, when it comes to covering up, dressing modestly has the added benefit of shielding you from the harsh sun.

Goodbye sleeveless vests and jeans, hello light button-up shirts and linen trousers. You’ll want to avoid anything that clings and is synthetic – the important thing is to let your skin breathe.

What the local Egyptians wear

Today, you’ll see your Egyptian hosts largely covering up and you’ll feel comfortable doing the same, especially if you’re a woman.

When considering what to wear, it's always a good idea to cover up when you're visiting religious and sacred sites during your trip to Egypt

Although Egyptian women tend to wear a  hijab  to cover their head and hair, there is no expectation that you do the same. We do however recommend that you avoid wearing tight-fitting trousers and shorts, or baring your shoulders and midriff, out of respect for the local culture and to avoid unnecessary attention.

It’s also a good idea to avoid anything transparent when you’re planning what to wear in Egypt. White clothes are borderline in this regard, besides the fact that it will not stay lily white if the dust has its way.

Beware, the sun is brutal

Our top tip for what to pack for your trip to Egypt if you’re a woman? Don’t dare zip up your luggage without picking out your favourite ever-versatile scarf or pashmina. Not only will it protect you from the harsh sun, it will ensure you’re appropriately covered when visiting Egypt’s most sacred sites.

Dressing modestly is required when visiting the sacred sites so consider this when you're planning what to wear and pack for your trip to Egypt

Don’t let the heat of the day trick you into thinking you don’t need a jacket for the evening, especially in winter (November to April). While pleasantly warm during the day, the temperature drops quickly at night and you’ll be grateful you packed one.

On the point of covering up, you may wonder whether it’s appropriate to pack your swimming costume and indeed it is if you’re planning to relax at a resort on the Red Sea or splash about on a Nile cruise. Don’t forget to bring your wide-brimmed hat and high-SPF sunscreen though to keep you safe from the blistering rays.

Lastly, ensure comfort top to toe by wearing the right shoes, and that means sturdy and practical. After all, you’ve come to explore the fascinating history of Egypt and its magnificent monuments, from the Giza Pyramids to the grand temples of Luxor and Aswan, so you don’t want to be plagued with uncomfortable shoes.

Staying safe and clean

It goes without saying, but staying safe should be your top priority on your trip to Egypt and you’ll want to ensure you’re well equipped with hand sanitiser, hand wipes and of course a mask or two. You’ll be grateful for the spare when you need to wash your mask to get rid of the dust.

Sun protection

We also recommend packing a high-SPF sunscreen – SPF50 will do just fine – as well as other items to shield you from that unforgiving Egyptian sun we keep reminding you about. Pack a shawl or scarf, a wide-brimmed hat and long, loose clothes made from natural fibres.

Keeping charged up

Some of the other more practical tips on what to pack for your trip to Egypt include insect repellent, a European plug adapter, and a good portable charger to keep your phone and camera charged so you can capture all those unforgettable memories throughout your journey.

Leave your valuables at home

On the point of valuables, like anywhere in the world it’s always a good idea to leave your valuables at home and to ensure your cards, passport and cash are safe and concealed at all times.

Our final packing tip to make sure your trip to Egypt is one you’ll remember forever? Leave some space in your luggage for a memento of your epic exploration of ancient Egypt.

  • What to carry in your luggage
  • Plan your trip to Egypt

If you are wondering what to pack for your trip to Egypt , we make it easy. The first of the Egypt travel tips at this point is: less is more. Think less. Go minimalist…

Recommended baggage

If your trip will last two weeks, it is best to consider packing light. The ideal is a small suitcase for your clothes and toiletries that you will leave at the hotel and a small backpack to move around the different excursions, making sure that your back does not suffer and that you carry only the essentials in it, so that you can walk without pain and in total comfort.

Don’t forget to always leave at least 25 percent free space in your suitcase and backpack. In the suitcase, to put the gifts and souvenirs that you will buy during the trip and in the backpack to carry fresh water and snacks that you will buy in a supermarket or local store before or during an excursion.

Type of clothing

What to wear to Egypt? This is also where the idea of lightness comes in, which makes what we developed above regarding luggage much simpler. You have to take into account that in Egypt it is hot all year round, with some occasional exceptions in winter, but it cannot be said that it is cold either.

This means that your clothing for your trip to Egypt should include lots of t-shirts, pants of light fabrics, skirts and whatever you find comfortable for walking and moving around . And who assures you that you won’t be hot. Jackets and sweaters? Yes, also, but only for the airplane or the air conditioning they may put on the buses during excursions. And if you cruise the Nile, a light jacket and a long-sleeved shirt in the evenings won’t hurt.

Short sleeve or long sleeve? Shorts or long pants? In both cases, we recommend long sleeves and pants, because the sun in Egypt can be very intense and even dangerous for the skin, so long-sleeved shirts and pants that cover all your legs will protect you much better.

And since the hikes are usually long and quite extensive, on sand or asphalt, the best footwear for Egypt are comfortable sneakers for use on any surface and sandals at night to let the foot rest and breathe.

Recommended accessories

Always within this concept of lightness and minimalism with which you should think, plan and execute your luggage to travel to Egypt, we recommend you to take these accessories:

  • Small backpack. In case you dispense with the hand luggage and travel to Egypt only with a backpack, we recommend that you include a small backpack of approximately 10 liters folded and empty, which will be the one you use every day for your excursions and visits.
  • Sun protection equipment. The sun in Egypt can be very harsh if you don’t have three essential and easy to carry items: hat or cap, sunglasses and sunscreen of at least factor 50.
  • Stainless steel water bottle. As you will be drinking a lot of water during your trip to Egypt, to avoid buying small bottles all the time you can take your own and refill it with a carafe you buy in a supermarket or store. There are also drinking water fountains in many cities.
  • Toiletries bag. All hygiene items such as toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, alcohol gel and others, in a convenient and practical toiletry bag.

What type of plug do you use in Egypt?

Just as there are essential things to bring on your trip to Egypt, there are others that are totally dispensable and that we recommend you leave at home if you are traveling with light luggage. The first thing we will mention is something that many tourists forget or do not know: Egypt has the same electrical outlets as in Europe .

That is, if you are coming from South America, the United States or the United Kingdom , among others, you will not be able to plug your electrical devices into the sockets in Egypt. You will need to carry an adapter for special plugs.

Type of plug in Egypt

What NOT to wear

It is also not necessary to include towels, toilet paper or soap in your luggage for fear that the hotels will not provide them. Generally, all accommodations, even the most economical ones, include this service. Remember that Egypt is a country that receives many tourists a year and is very prepared in this regard. In any case, if you are going to book hotels in advance, you can always consult in advance.

With so many safety regulations, it is best to avoid carrying a drone for filming or taking panoramic photos. Generally, tourists carrying a drone have it taken away from them at the airport with no possibility of return. But if you are lucky and manage to avoid this, it is very likely that a policeman or security guard in some city will see it and take it away from you.

Finally, although it may be obvious, but it also goes without saying, no drugs. The possession and use of drugs in Egypt, including marijuana , is punishable by many years in prison and even death by hanging. And no exceptions are made for tourists.

The ultimate Egypt packing guide

Two travellers on camels in Egypt

For me, it was a year eight assignment on ancient Egypt . For my boyfriend, it was The Mummy. For others, it’s Cleopatra or Tutankhamen, the Pyramids of Giza or the Sphinx.

Every tourist I met in Egypt seemed to have a reason for visiting. And with its vibrant bazaars, ancient temples and royal tombs, it’s easy to see why so many dream of visiting the North African country. After several revolutions and a few years of political instability, Egypt is ready to welcome visitors once again.

Despite its increasing popularity, there is a degree of preparation required for an Egyptian jaunt that may not be needed elsewhere. Putting aside visa requirements, packing appropriately is crucial. For a start, Egypt is a very conservative country, with roughly 90% of citizens identifying as Muslim. This means covering up from shoulders to knees is essential, particularly as a woman. If you’re travelling between June and August, you have another factor to consider: the heat. Summer temperatures in southern cities like Aswan typically linger between 40-50 degrees Celsius and rarely drop in the evenings. Having experienced these sweltering temperatures first-hand, I guarantee that this is no exaggeration.

Loose p ants and long s kirts:  Sweltering heat and conservative dress aren’t exactly the easiest pairing. In order to meet both criteria, women should opt for loose pants and maxi skirts below the knees. Men aren’t required to cover up, but are encouraged to wear shorts below the knee and avoid singlet tops. Ditch the synthetics and stick to cotton or natural fibres to avoid overheating; polyester pants are a recipe for sweat.

T-shirts and button-ups:  Covering your shoulders is essential when venturing out of a resort area in Egypt. I found it easiest to stick with loose t-shirts or layer them underneath a shoulder-bearing outfit. In a pinch, thin straps can be covered with a light button-up shirt.

Linen:  Easily the most breathable natural fibre, linen will keep you cool and protected from the infamous Egyptian sun.

Walking shoes:  A visit to Egypt typically revolves around the exploration of ancient sites and you know what goes hand in hand with exploration? Walking. And lots of it. Bring comfy walking shoes to avoid the aching feet I faced every evening. Black shoes are best, unless you want your favourite white sneakers to be permanently caked in a layer of desert dust.

Group in front of Pyramids

Hat:  Wide-brimmed is best, but any hat will go far to protect your precious head from the ruthless sun.

Swimsuit:  If you’re planning a boat trip down the Nile, you’re going to want a swimsuit. Trust me, the idea of swimming in it is a lot more appealing when it’s 47 degrees and your boat isn’t air-conditioned. If you’re not keen on a fresh-water dip, some Intrepid hotels in Egypt have pools, so throw in a bathing suit anyway.

Other essentials

High SPF sunscreen:  The Egyptian sun does NOT kid around. While much ofyour body will be covered with loose clothing, strong sunscreen is important for any exposed areas like the face.

RELATED: MEET EMAN, THE INTREPID LEADER THAT WANTS YOU TO VISIT EGYPT RIGHT NOW

Cash:  The official currency of Egypt is the Egyptian Pound, but the US Dollar is also accepted in many areas, including at the airport (where it is required to purchase a visa). It’s worthwhile bringing a few hundred USD to pay for trip extras and tips, but avoid paying for food or souvenirs in foreign currency or risk being significantly short-changed or over-charged. ATMs are widely available across the country, so no need to bring a bulk sum with you from home.

Re-usable water bottle:  While you’ll be required to purchase drinking water during your stay, a re-usable bottle will keep your water cooler and be more environmentally friendly than a single-use plastic bottle.

Hand sanitiser:  I bring hand sanitiser on every trip, but found myself reaching for it in Egypt more than usual. It’s a dusty place and a lot of my meals were street food enjoyed on the go. A small bottle won’t take up any space in your bag but will definitely come in handy.

three-veiled-women-looking-to-water.

Type C (European) plug adapter:  Egypt uses the European-style plugs with two round prongs, so be sure to throw a few of these in your luggage.

BOOK A SMALL GROUP TOUR TO EGYPT WITH INTREPID

Bug repellant:  If like me, you seem to attract mosquitoes wherever you go, be sure to pack some repellant with ‘deet’. This is particularly important if you’re heading to the Nile, where mosquitoes tend to linger.

Shawl or pashmina:  Whatever you call it, a lightweight scarf or shawl is a great addition to your day-pack. It can be thrown over a low-cut top or singlet to enhance the modesty of your outfit, or wrapped around your legs when visiting religious sites. Just be sure to leave space for any impulse scarf purchases from a traditional Egyptian cotton weaver.

My top three extra tips

1. Hydration powder

Heat sucks the energy out of you and with it, goes the water. While most attractions have cafes serving refreshments, it’s almost impossible to remain hydrated in the summer months without the aid of hydration powder to replenish those all-important electrolytes.

egypt_man-donkey-in-the-dunes

2. Travel sickness medication

Egyptian attractions aren’t always conveniently located in town, nor are they accessible via smooth, sealed roads, so trips to popular sites like Abu Simbel require long, bumpy drives. If you suffer from travel sickness, be sure to bring medication to make your journeys more enjoyable.

3. Portable charger

Long days in the car and longer journeys on overnight sleeper trains call for technology to pass the time, so save yourself the stress of a low-battery and bring a portable charger.

The top three things to avoid

1. Light and white clothing

I’m sad to report my brand-new white t-shirt barely lasted a week before its crisp colour couldn’t be revived and had to be abandoned. Egypt is just too dusty for shades of white. Learn from my mistake and stick to other colours, both in clothes and shoes.

2. Revealing or tight-fitting clothes

While there is no strict dress code in Egypt, the more conservatively you dress, the less attention you will draw. This is especially true in smaller cities and more remote areas. Save room and stress by avoiding anything revealing, tight-fitting or cropped.

3. High-heels

The roads of Egypt have seen better days, so unless you’re eager to navigate pot-holes and cracks, it’s best to stick with flat soled-shoes.

What to Pack for Egypt- The Ultimate Egypt Packing Guide

Me standing in front of the Sphinx of Giza.

Disclosure: What to Pack for Egypt contains affiliate links.  If you make a purchase through one of these links, I will earn a small commission at no cost to you.

So you’re planning a trip to Egypt?    How exciting!  Egypt truly is a magical place filled with historical landmarks and ancient treasures.   While traveling through Egypt you will experience some hot days, chilly nights, dusty uneven roads, and many more unexpected surprises along the way.

When packing for Egypt, you want to be prepared as possible without overpacking. However, you also need to keep in mind the local customs. As you can see, packing for Egypt can be tricky ( and may be how you ended up here in the first place! )  In Egypt, you want to be sure to dress conservatively, so keep those crop tops at home!

I’ve compiled an Egypt packing list to go over all the essential things you should pack for Egypt. Follow this, and you will be prepared for anything during your travels!

Check out everything I wish I had known before traveling to Egypt!

Table of Contents

WHAT TO WEAR IN EGYPT

90% of Egyptians are Muslim, which means most women will dress very modestly.  Typically this means their shoulders, knees, and hair will often be covered.  It’s respectful to dress similarly, especially when visiting religious sites or temples.  Although, in more touristy areas, you’ll find it’s not as expected.

As a woman, dressing risqué will definitely draw some unwanted male attention in Egypt.  Following the local customs and covering up a bit will definitely make you feel more comfortable.

WEATHER IN EGYPT

Depending on when you go, the temperatures in Egypt can vary.  It’s a desert climate, so expect it to be hot and dry year round. Temperatures in the winter will range from 60-75 degrees Fahrenheit and climb well above 100 degrees during the summer months.  However, evenings can get pretty chilly, so you will definitely want to remember to pack a jacket for Egypt!

VISA & PASSPORT REQUIREMENTS FOR EGYPT

Many countries are able to get a visa on arrival to Egypt.

Once you arrive, you have to get your visa before entering the country.  Depending on where you are from, you will need to pay for your  Egyptian visa . If you are from the US, your visa will cost $25.00 and will need to be paid in US Dollars.  So the first thing to be sure to pack is $25 cash!

Also, be sure your passport’s expiration date is at least 6 months after the date you will be going to Egypt.  If it’s any less, you may be denied entry into the country.

WHAT TO PACK- Here are the items you want to pack for Egypt.

Luggage & bags to pack.

  • Luggage- If you aren’t traveling with a carry on, be sure your luggage is sturdy! Egypt has some dusty and bumpy streets, so the last thing you will want is your luggage wheel breaking off mid trip. Also, if you have luggage that has a built in TSA approved luggage lock, I highly recommend bringing it! This way you can lock important documents and extra cash in your room when you leave.

Coolife Luggage 3 Piece Set Suitcase Spinner Hardshell Lightweight TSA Lock

  • Packing Cubes- A MUST HAVE item for saving space! These packing cubes are my go to for almost every trip. Plus, they help me stay organized when unpacking since I can group items by pants, tops, etc.
  • Backpack- Having a backpack or other bag for day trips is essential for Egypt. I’m sure you will be visiting lots of historical sites. You want to be sure to have a bag that isn’t too heavy, but can also fit things you’ll need during the day such as sunscreen, hat, money, and other essentials.
  • Crossbody Bag or Purse- If you are bringing a purse to Egypt, make sure it’s a crossbody one. This way you can keep your belongings and important documents close to you and know you aren’t getting pickpocketed. (Although that’s still possible, so be careful!)
  • Hanging Toiletries Bag- I absolutely love my toiletries bag! It’s spacious, waterproof, and has a hook to hang- ideal for small spaces. If you are going on a Nile river cruise, these come in handy since there isn’t a lot of counter space in most of the bathrooms. I have this specific one and have used it for years! (Click photo to the right for this exact model.)

Wedama Toiletry Bag for Women, Large Cosmetic Travel Bag, Hanging Toiletry Bag for Bathroom, Thickened PVC Waterproof Travel Makeup Bag, Toiletries Bag for Travel Business Trips and Camping, Black

  • Organizing Bags- I typically pack an electronics bag , jewelry organizer , and laundry bag for most of my trips. This way any jewelry or charing cords don’t get all tangled, and my dirty laundry will stay separate from the clean clothing! Click on the images below for my specific recommendations!

BAGSMART Electronics Organizer Travel Case, Small Travel Cable Organizer Bag for Travel Essentials, Travel Tech Organizer as Travel Accessories for Women, Cord Organizer for Phone, SD Card, Black

TRAVEL ESSENTIALS TO PACK

  • Neck Pillow- There’s nothing more essential for a long haul flight than a good neck pillow! My pick? This one here with built in neck support! It folds up and fits easily in a carry on without having to hang from your backpack and get dirty your whole trip.

trtl Travel Pillow for Neck Support- Super Soft Neck Pillow with Shoulder Support and Cozy Cushioning Lightweight and Easy to Carry - Machine Washable - Grey

  • Microfiber Towels- These microfiber towels take up barely any space and come in handy if you need a towel but don’t have time to wait for it to dry. These dry super fast!
  • Books on Egypt- I always try to get familiar about a place before I travel there. Here are some of my favorite books on Egypt that will help you get the most out of your trip to Egypt. (Also great reads for the long flight!)

Egypt Travel Guide 2024 Updated: Discover Pharaohs' Treasures With This Essential Egypt Book: Travel Guide Cairo and Must See Destinations: Exploring Egypt's Rich Heritage with Insight Guides Egypt

  • Luggage locks- If your luggage doesn’t have a built in lock, be sure to bring these. If you are keeping valuable items in your room during day trips, make sure you lock them up. This way there’s some added layer of security. This is a must pack for Egypt!
  • Eye mask- Essential for getting some serious shut eye on a long haul flight.
  • Purifying water bottle- You CAN NOT drink the tap water in Egypt, so this is essential. I still recommend buying bottled water for the most part, but this is good to have if you are in a bind. This specific bottle filters and cleans water and removes all pathogens with a simple press of a button.

GRAYL GeoPress 24 oz Water Purifier Bottle - Filter for Hiking, Camping, Survival, Travel (Bali Blue)

ELECTRONICS TO PACK

  • Universal Travel Adapter- If you don’t have a travel adapter for Egypt, be sure to get one BEFORE your trip. You’ll need plugs C and F. I recommend getting a universal travel adapter. This way you’ll be able to use on future trips to Europe, Asia, or South America too!
  • Portable charger pack- This is one of the top items EVERY traveler needs. Imagine your phone battery running out right as you are about to capture the perfect picture of the pyramids?! We no longer have to carry that anxiety with us! This is my portable charger bank of choice. It’s super sleek, light weight and has four ports so you can charge multiple items at once.
  • Voltage converter- Because some countries have different voltages, chargers or hair tools can get extremely hot and even blow out if they don’t allow for changes in voltage.  This voltage converter takes 240v and converts to 120v ensuring the safety of overheating,  overcharging or short-circuiting. Trust me… you’ll want this.

2000Watts Voltage Converter, 220V to 110V Converter, International Plug Adapter, Power Converter Adapter Combo, US to Europe, UK, Israel, Africa Over 150 Countries (Black)

  • Ear buds- My choice are these airpods , but there are many other options out there that are cheaper as well! Noise cancelling are ideal. Just make sure whichever you purchase are compatible with the devices you regularly use.

WHAT TO PACK & WEAR FOR CLOTHING in EGYPT

  • Hat- The Egyptian sun is powerful and can get extremely hot. Be sure to have 1 hat for your trip, so if you need a little bit of shade, you have the option to cover your face.
  • Lightweight large scarf- Absolutely be sure to bring at least 1 large pashmina, or lightweight scarf. I wore one every day, so I had it in case I needed to cover my hair when entering religious sites or temples. You never know when you are going to need it, so take it with you!

Jeelow Lightweight Summer Scarf Light Shawl Wrap Linen Feel Scarves For Men And Women

  • Modest Bathing suit – Don’t pack your most risqué bathing suit for your trip to Egypt. Because of their customs and religion, I would pack the most modest, and have a cover up nearby. Although you may see others not abiding to this rule in more touristy sites or hotels, I think it’s important to be as respectful as possible.
  • Swimsuit Cover Up – Perfect after taking a dip!
  • Comfortable walking shoes- I brought these Nike sneakers, and LOVED them. They are so light weight and comfortable for all the walking around you’ll be doing. Whatever you do, be sure not to bring white sneakers or shoes. The sand and dirt throughout most of Egypt will easily stain and discolor white garments and shoes.

Nike mens Revolution 5 Running

  • Polarized Sunglasses- Sunglasses are so important in Egypt because the sun is so bright. Many of the sites you will visit are in the desert, so there also isn’t a lot of shade.

No matter where you're going or how often you travel, luggage can make or break your trip. It helps with planning, packing, and staying organized while away — and sometimes determines whether you can bring back souvenirs. There's a wide range of checked suitcases, carry-on bags, duffels, weekenders, underseat bags, and backpacks on the market. Beyond that, you've got hardside and softside options with various organizational features. Amid what you might call the Golden Age of luggage, it can be hard to sift through your offerings.

To figure out what brands stand out from the rest, our Travel + Leisure team has tested more than 508 pieces of luggage ranging from carry-ons and checked suitcases to duffels, weekenders, garment bags, and other types of travel bags — assessing capacity, maneuverability, durability, and design through a series of tests and simulations. We've rolled suitcases through obstacle courses, threw them off tables, and hit them with baseball bats to see how well they'd perform in different travel scenarios like rough baggage handlers. We even recreated an airplane set in our New York City lab to lift bags into real overhead bins and underneath seats. We continue testing each bag in our real-life travels for a minimum of six months to make sure it stands up to planes, trains, automobiles, and anything else life may throw at it.

Our team has tested bags from many different brands, and below you'll find our current favorites. We will continue to update this article as we test even more luggage brands and new bags.

Best Overall

Backed by a 10-year warranty, Samsonite luggage is compact yet spacious, easy to maneuver, and exceptionally durable.

Because Samsonite has such a wide variety of designs and price points, some bags perform better than others.

After our most recent set of luggage tests, Samsonite has risen to the top as our favorite overall luggage brand. Samsonite luggage is generally lightweight and compact on the outside, with spacious interiors to maximize packing and a variety of styles to choose from. We especially love the brand for its versatility, with an impressive variety of bags at different price points so you can find whatever suits you whether you're looking for something affordable or luxurious.

The Samsonite Freeform Hardside Expandable Carry-on holds the spot as the best overall carry-on we've ever tested, while the Samsonite Winfield 2 Hardside takes the cake as our favorite checked suitcase . We also loved the organizational features — including multiple tech sleeves and included packing cubes — of the Samsonite Just Right Carry-on Spinner .

Almost all of the suitcases sustained hardly any damage after we hit them with a baseball bat and shoved them off a table. Samsonite luggage also maneuvers without a fuss, even on carpeted floors and gravel. Prices are more than reasonable, and while you'll have to make any returns within 30 days, the brand backs its products with a 10-year warranty.

Sophie Mendel, Editor

"As a travel editor, I've tried my share of luggage brands. But the bag I reach for again and again is my trusty Samsonite carry-on , which has stood the test of time, traveling with me to the bustling roads of Cairo to the peaceful fields of Botswana and beyond. I can always count on Samsonite for high-quality, long-lasting, and (extremely) durable pieces that I won't have to worry about breaking or damaging, wherever I'm headed."

Best Overall, Runner-up

The suitcases are durable, smooth-rolling, and spacious, and the brand has a generous 100-day return policy.

Some are harder to pull on two wheels, and the checked models are a bit heavy.

All Travelpro luggage we tested earned high scores for maneuverability, durability, capacity, and overall design. The brand's hardside and softside models were a hit in the T+L lab, and there are both carry-on and checked options with spacious interiors and expandable capacities. We also appreciated the various organizational features, like zipper panels, cross straps, and pockets.

With self-aligning spinner wheels and sturdy telescoping handles, Travelpro luggage is also easy to maneuver on hard floors, carpet, and even gravel (though some suitcases are slightly harder to roll on two wheels than four, especially when packed full). We particularly love the Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Expandable Hardside Spinner with its sleek wheels and a textured handle that helps maintain a comfortable grip, and we think the Travelpro x Travel + Leisure Large Check-In Trunk Spinner makes a stylish investment piece if you're looking for something large, durable, and built to last. Even Travelpro's rolling garment bag impressed with its high capacity for the size. And, while the carry-ons are generally lightweight, one thing to note is that the larger checked models weigh almost twice as much when empty.

After shoving the suitcases off a table and whacking them with a baseball bat, we were pleasantly surprised by their durability. We only noticed a couple superficial marks — no scratches or dents, and nothing that wouldn't wipe clean. Travelpro offers a generous 100-day return policy and backs its luggage with warranties ranging from 10 years to a lifetime, though it can be difficult to connect with their customer service department to initiate returns or repair requests at times.

Merrell Readman, Senior Writer

"I've always leaned into traveling with a carry-on bag or a duffel, so when I first tried out the Travelpro Maxlite 5 , I was floored with how lightweight, spacious, and easy to navigate it was. The nearly weightless construction makes it so I can pack to my hearts content without exceeding airline checked bag weight limits, plus, I've been exceedingly impressed with how well the brand has taken on the wear and tear of travel without hardly incurring a dent or scratch."

Best for Staying Organized

Beyond aesthetic appeal, Away flaunts plenty of pockets and compartments that keep all of your items in place.

The hardside suitcases might scratch under heavy use.

Away luggage has a minimalist-modern aesthetic and a sophisticated yet practical appeal. We're huge fans of the brand's suitcases and weekenders and particularly love The Everywhere Bag that's perfect for overnight trips, quick weekend adventures, and use as a personal item on longer trips. The checked baggage and hardside carry-on luggage pieces are light yet durable and easy to wipe clean. They didn't sustain any dents from our baseball bat tests, but there were a few scratches after we shoved them off a table. There are so many sizes to choose from, including one of our favorite trunks we've ever tested. We liked the dual main compartments, compression systems, expanders, and dirty laundry satchels of the roller bags.

The suitcases were a breeze to maneuver on their 360-degree spinner wheels, and carrying The Everywhere and The Garment Bag was comfortable with the padded shoulder straps. The Garment Bag also has interior padding that keeps all of your longer clothing items protected and helps to minimize wrinkles. Away is certainly not the cheapest luggage brand out there, but it's also far from the most expensive. Considering the 100-day return window, lifetime warranty, and stylish designs, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to pretty much any traveler.

Jasmine Grant, Senior Editor

"I'm partial to hardside luggage, and in my opinion, Away makes the best there is. I've owned Away's The Bigger Carry-On for years, and even loaned it to a family member for her two-week honeymoon in Thailand. It came back to me durable as ever. Each suitcase is well-crafted and built to last. What's equally impressive is the internal organization of their luggage, which helps the perpetual overpacker in me keep track of my things during week-long trips. Make no mistake though — their hardside suitcases are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to their impressive lineup of products. They also make some of our favorite toiletry bags, garment bags, duffels, and more. I continue to be impressed by what this brand brings forth every launch."

A perfect choice for organized travelers, Paravel luggage has lots of added features and a sophisticated appeal.

The suitcases don't expand, and the lighter colors are prone to scuffing.

Perfect for organized travelers , Paravel takes the cake for additional features. We loved the dual compartments, many pockets, dividers, and removable laundry bags. While the suitcases don't expand, the compression pads make fitting everything a cinch. The Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus was one of our top carry-on bags thanks to its sleek design, roomy interior that makes packing a breeze, and slick wheels that were great on every surface. We also love the super cute Paravel Mini Fold-up Backpack that earned perfect scores in every category, as well as our pick as best overall mini backpack . Not only does the bag fold up small so you can pack it in larger bags, but it also has a high capacity that can even fit a tablet, making it the perfect eye-catching style to wear on any vacation.

Most Paravel luggage pieces held up well during our durability tests, though the lighter-colored hardside models are prone to scuffing. The suitcases are also easy to pull, push, and roll over various flooring materials. What's more, Paravel luggage is undeniably stylish with a sophisticated appeal and a cool mid-century flair. Prices are somewhat steep, but in the end, we think it's worth the investment, especially give its 10-year warranty and 30-day return policy.

Lydia Price, Senior Editor

"I put my luggage through a lot. As a New Yorker, rushing over subway grates, maneuvering thick crowds, and being tossed about in taxi trunks is all in a typical travel day's work for my suitcases. My Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus has been rock-solid through it all. In addition to a hardy build and smooth-glliding wheels, the Aviator won me over with thoughtful organization and a tough zipper that holds up when I need to fit just one more pair of shoes inside. The timeless aesthetic is also a huge draw for me — I have the carry-on in the scout tan color that always feels in style, no matter where I am in the world. I also appreciate the brand's commitment to sustainable practices, like using mostly recycled materials and ensuring production is carbon neutral."

Most Spacious

The brand's large-capacity suitcases are impressively spacious yet lightweight, with built-in expanders and smooth-rolling wheels.

The hardside models are prone to scuffing.

Delsey is a go-to for large-capacity luggage . This brand carries both hardside and softside suitcases, including surprisingly spacious carry-ons and checked baggage in multiple sizes so you can find the best design for your needs. We were thrilled by how much they fit, noting that they could easily pack all items on our packing list with room to spare, even without expansion functions.

The suitcases maneuver well on their four spinner wheels, even over carpet, cracks, and bumps. Most models are also lightweight, so lifting them into an overhead bin is no problem. We checked the Chatelet Air 2.0 Carry-on and matching Chatelet Air 2.0 Medium Checked bag on four different long-haul international flights and each time they made it to the luggage carousel with only minor scuffs that were easily wiped away. We appreciate Delsey's accessible price points, plus the brand backs its luggage with warranties ranging from five to 10 years along with a 30-day return policy.

Taylor Fox, Editor

"I'll admit: when I'm choosing luggage, I often go for aesthetics over functionality. Lucky for me, I found the Delsey Chatelet collection, which offers both! Every Delsey bag I have adds style and a sense of luxury to my trips, but the bags themselves are also protective with plenty of pockets and features to keep me organized. I have traveled to Egypt, Morocco, and Italy with the Angora Chatelet carry-on and checked bag and they still look great, are easy to clean, and roll like a dream wherever I go."

Travel + Leisure / Tamara Staples

Best Colors

They come in both neutrals and so many colorful designs, including limited-edition options.

Some of the carry-ons are on the smaller size.

You’ll feel like a kid in a candy store with all of the colorful suitcase options from July — and if you tend to gravitate toward neutrals, July has those, too. After we tested over a dozen bags in our lab on on our airplane set, some of our favorites included the July Carry On (includes a portable charger), the July Checked Plus (the largest suitcase in July’s range), the July Checked Plus Light (a great lightweight option), and the July Trunk Set (a stylish, zipperless two-piece set).

We found the bags to be very durable against our baseball bat tests, although we noticed that the bags with aluminum corner bumpers tended to scuff more easily specifically on the corners. One of our favorite features was that some bags, including the Carry On Pro SnapSleeve , feature a multi-stop telescopic handle that you can adjust to 20 different heights, when many suitcase handles only stop at three heights.

Different bag styles are available in different colorways, and you can choose from delightful shades of blues, greens, pinks, reds, shadow lavender, plum, yellow, sand, and more, most of which will easily stand out on any baggage carousel. We did notice that some of the carry-ons tend to be much more spacious than others, so be sure to check the dimensions to find a size that will fit everything you need. Also, note that while there's a limited lifetime warranty on luggage, there's a five-year warranty on soft bags and accessories and a two-year warranty on small leather goods. All products have a 100-day return policy.

Jackie Cucco, Testing Editor

"I think luggage should be fun, and July has so many eye-catching styles whether you’re team carry-on or checked. I personally have the Checked Plus Light suitcase, which I love for the curved eggshell design that is built for durability and nesting (if you have multiple suitcases from the Light line, you can nest the different sizes inside each other for storage). The smooth wheels made a world of difference when I had to haul the suitcase over cobblestones and zip through airports in a rush, and I can trust that my luggage is going to arrive at my destination in one piece while still looking stylish. It’s also a plus that the prices are reasonable and not too expensive for suitcases that will likely last a lifetime."

Best for Smaller Bags

Calpak luggage is compact yet still spacious enough to hold the essentials, and maneuvering it is a piece of cake.

The two-year warranty is substantially shorter than most other brands.

If you're looking for something you can stash in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you, Calpak might be your best bet. We loved the duffles, backpacks, and suitcases with a particular appreciation for the Hue Mini Carry-on Luggage , our best overall underseat bag . We love that it glides smoothly, has a sturdy exterior, and can even fit a laptop, making it perfect for weekend getaways or even business trips.

Even when packed full, we found each Calpak suitcase to roll beautifully on both two wheels and four. The Stevyn Duffel Bag was very comfortable to tote with its shoulder strap and features a separate shoe compartment to keep your items clean if you're in the market for something smaller. Though the two-year warranty is shorter than most other brands, we think Calpak's prices are more than fair (and appreciate the 30-day return policy).

Hillary Maglin, Updates Editor

"I'm always so impressed with how different Calpak is from other brands, yet it's still so durable, spacious, and compliant with airline size limitations. For example, the brand's Ambeur line features thin, lightweight, almost canvas-like hardshells — something I've never seen or felt from any other brand — but they remain dent- and scratch-free through drops and shoves. Another example is the Luka Duffel (my personal favorite Calpak piece), which squishes down nearly flat for storage, all while remaining structured and sturdy enough to carry everything from shoes to a laptop to a water bottle. It almost seems like the construction of Calpak luggage defies logic, but it always holds up to rough luggage handlers and looks stylish in the process."

Best Splurge

This splurge-worthy luggage brand boasts expandable main compartments, ample pockets, impact-resistant exteriors, and smooth spinner wheels.

The price might be hard to justify, and the checked bags are somewhat heavy when empty.

If you want the crème de la crème of luggage, Tumi is where it's at . The suitcases and underseat bags fared better than the duffel we tested, but all in all, we were impressed. Our favorite by far is the Alpha International Expandable 4-wheeled Carry-on that looks compact but includes plenty of organizational compartments and even comes with its own removable garment bag. There was plenty of space to pack everything on our list in every Tumi bag, even without the expanders. This brand also stands out for its organizational, smart, and security features. We're talking ample pockets, removable garment bags, laptop sleeves, USB ports, lockable zippers, and TSA-approved locks.

Whether you go softside or hardside, you can count on reliable durability — we even jumped on the bags and rode on top of them and not one feature broke or dented. We observed virtually no scuffs or scratches after whacking the bags with a baseball bat. Tumi luggage is easy to maneuver, thanks to the spinner wheels, but bear in mind the checked sizes are pretty heavy when empty. If you can swing the steep price, we think the brand is an excellent choice for long trips, frequent fliers , and those who like to stay organized, and bags come with a five-year warranty and 30-day return policy.

Morgan Ashley Parker, Associate Editorial Director

"Luggage is an investment and anytime I’m asked what brand I would stand by, I answer Tumi without hesitation. I have items that are nearly 20 years old (!) and, not only do they still work perfectly, I still use them. I love their thoughtful features like carry-ons with a built-in garment bag or suitcases with dual-access to stash a sweater inside, and Tumi's aptly named Just in Case line of foldable bags shouldn't be missed either."

Travel + Leisure / Jhett Thompson

Most Durable

Briggs & riley.

With ballistic nylon or shock-absorbing polycarbonate exteriors, Briggs & Riley suitcases can really take a beating.

This is one of the more expensive brands, and the checked models are slightly heavy when empty.

The most durable luggage we tested comes from Briggs & Riley . The brand carries softside suitcases with ballistic nylon exteriors that resist premature wear and tear, as well as hardside models with shock-absorbing polycarbonate shells that promise to protect your cargo from getting crushed. We were impressed by how well they stood up to our shoves and bat swings — no dents or scratches to speak of.

Durability aside, Briggs & Riley suitcases roll effortlessly on hard floors and carpet, over bumps, and around tight corners. They also have decent capacities, many with built-in expanders. This is one of the more expensive luggage brands, but it's backed by a lifetime guarantee. We wouldn't be surprised if the suitcases last 10 or more years. Not only that, but there are a few options for remedying potential damage, including self-repair kits, authorized repair centers, or shipping back to Briggs & Riley for a tune-up.

Anna Popp, Associate Editor

"As a member of the checked-bag-only club, I have brought my Briggs & Riley large spinner on more than 30 flights in the last few years and it's been an absolute champion. After watching this suitcase fall off of the conveyor belt leading into the airplane cargo hold, I am convinced that the hardshell material is impermeable when it comes to rough handling. I don't typically bag fragile items in a checked bag (for obvious reasons) but I feel comfortable placing all kinds of products in my checked bag knowing that everything is safeguarded by the durable construction and materials the brand uses. I know the prices are a bit high upfront, but I promise you will spend more in less-durable suitcases over time, which makes it worth it in the long-run."

People / Tamara Staples

Best Design

Thoughtfully designed, each Béis bag we tried comes with extra, often removable, features so you can customize your packing.

These are large bags and we had a hard time fitting some weekenders under airplane seats.

Shay Mitchell's luggage brand quickly won our hearts with each bag's thoughtful design, customizable inserts, and removable compartments. The bags are certainly large and can fit everything you need for a long vacation or quick weekend getaway — just be mindful that not all of the duffel-style bags will work as personal items. The Weekender is one of our favorites: like Mary Poppins' bag of wonders, this tote seems to expand as you pack it, fitting every item on our list.

When it comes to rolling bags, the 29-inch Large Check-in Roller is our best checked bag for organization . Similar to its weekenders, carry-on bags, and backpacks, Béis' check-in bag is huge and can fit everything you need and more. All of the Béis suitcases we tested also sported durable wheels that smoothly navigated different types of surfaces without getting stuck, as well as easy-to-use handles that make running through the airport a breeze. All products are backed with a limited lifetime warranty as well.

Emily Belfiore, Senior Editor

"Once you try a piece of Beis luggage, you’ll immediately wonder how you ever traveled with anything other than these well-designed suitcases. Every item from the brand is meticulously crafted to stand up to the wear and tear of travel and offer the user a hassle-free experience. I’m a big fan of the Beis Carry-on Roller , which has a sturdy hardshell exterior and an expandable body that offers an additional 2 inches of packing space, which is a godsend for an overpacker like me."

Other Luggage Brands We Liked

Even though these brands did not make our main list, they still have some worthwhile suitcases and bags to consider.

Monos :  Monos items have a nice, sleek look that are generally easy to maneuver. However, when we tested its large check-in suitcase, we found that it carried less items than some of its competitors.

Arlo Skye :  We love this brand's smooth design and stand-out colors, but considering the higher price-point, these bags don't roll quite as smoothly as some other brands.

Roam : We're big fans of Roam's The Check-in hardside suitcase as well as the designs of other Roam bags; however, after one-month of real-world travels, we found these luggage pieces to be more prone to scratching than other brands we tried.

The T+L team has tested more than 508 pieces of luggage, including carry-ons, checked suitcases, duffels, weekenders, garment bags, backpacks, and more in our New York City testing facility. We've tried at least six models from many top-rated brands, performing a range of assessments to evaluate the capacity, maneuverability, durability, design, and overall value. We weighed each bag, then packed it with enough clothes and personal items to get through a four-day trip (more for the larger checked bags).

To see how the luggage would perform in a real-life environment, we rolled them on different flooring materials, across gravel and carpets, over bumps, and around corners. We also threw each piece off a table and whacked it a few times with a metal baseball bat to test for potential wear and tear and how prone it was to scratching or denting. In addition, we recreated an airplane set in our lab, where we hoisted the carry-on suitcases into real overhead bins and stuffed them underneath seats to see how easy they were to lift and how portable they felt.

After lab testing, each suitcase and bag was sent out for real-world testing, and our T+L editors brought the bags on vacations, weekend trips, and overnighters. To test each bag's true durability, convenience, and longevity, we tested each bag on planes, trains, buses, and even cruise ships, checking in after one month, three months, and six months to give our feedback. Considering standout features, size, and price, we created categorized ranked lists of every luggage piece we tested. The luggage brands with the highest average ratings were ultimately chosen for this list of our favorites, which we will continue to update as we test even more luggage.

How We Chose These Brands

The T+L team tested at least six bags per brand on our winners list to ensure a broad sample size. We tested underseat luggage , checked luggage, and carry-on luggage as well as duffel bags, garment bags, and backpacks, and gave each individual bag a score based on its capacity, design, durability, maneuverability, and overall value.

Next, we created rankings based on the total average scores of all the bags we tested for that brand. We also thoroughly read through all of the tester insights on each luggage item from these three tests to evaluate each bag's details and features. Finally, we determined whether or not we would recommend a bag and its overall brand.

Tips for Buying Luggage

Get to know the brand.

When it comes to researching a new luggage brand, you're already well on your way. For more information on a specific brand, you can check out its website, read customer reviews on products you like, or even take a peek at the items in person. Buying new luggage (whether a singular piece or luggage set ) can be a pricey investment, so be sure you like a brand's style, warranty options, and overall quality before you make that purchase. This is especially important when it comes to splurging on luxury luggage pieces .

Know your organizational preferences

Material and size are important, but some of the best luggage brands stand out for their organizational features. This may include dual main compartments, various pockets, a shoe separator, zippered sections, a toiletry bag , a removable laundry bag, a garment bag, a laptop sleeve, and maybe even a USB port with a power bank pouch — some Arlo Skye luggage includes the power bank itself. While it's not a top priority for all travelers, this can make packing and accessing your belongings much easier.

Look for durability

The best luggage stands up to wear and tear for several years to come. Both softside and hardside luggage options can be very durable. It's really a matter of whether you want to safeguard your packed items from getting crushed or protect the exterior of the suitcase from superficial blemishes (though many softside and hardside models we tested check all the boxes).

Think about mobility

You should also think about maneuverability. When you're running into the airport to check your bags before heading to security, you'll want a suitcase that doesn't hold you back. Four-wheel spinner suitcases tend to be easier to pull and push over different surfaces compared to suitcases with just two wheels, and they're even better if they have a sturdy telescoping handle. Grab handles and padded straps are ideal for other types of luggage, and a lightweight design will make your travel experience much easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

You'll see a range of hardside and softside models when browsing luggage, and many of the best brands offer both. What you purchase really comes down to personal preference. Some people appreciate how crush-resistant hardside suitcases protect their belongings. They're also easy to wipe clean and have a sleek, modern appearance.

On the other hand, softside suitcases are typically (but not always) lighter in weight and more flexible, so you can often pack more in them. After testing both types, we can tell you they're often just as durable as hardside options, and they won't dent like hardside bags do. Although a textile exterior might be trickier to clean, it can be better at concealing scuffs and dirt. Regardless of the type of luggage, you can find several effective products to clean suitcases available.

Size limits for carry-on luggage vary among airlines . That said, most allow suitcases no larger than 24 inches tall, 16 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. Some are a little more strict, with limits set around 22 x 14 x 9 inches. Keep this in mind if your suitcase has an expander, as the additional inch or two could put it over the allowed size limit. We recommend checking the airline's website if you're not sure whether your luggage will pass as a carry-on.
