Apsara Vihar Falls is just a 10-minute downhill trail and one of the must-visit falls in Pachmarhi. It is believed that during the British era, British ladies used to bathe here. The ladies being fair, the locals thought of them to be apsaras and hence the pool was named Apsara Vihar.

The nearest airport is Raja Bhoj Airport in the state's capital Bhopal (around 222 km) which has daily flight services from Delhi and Mumbai and 13 major cities of India. One can easily get a taxi from Bhopal to Pachmarhi. Jabalpur to Pachmarhi is also just 300 km, so one can opt for this route as well. Otherwise connecting flights to Bhopal or Jabalpur from other Indian cities including Raipur, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad can be availed.

Pachmarhi is just 54km by road from the Pipariya railway station. Home to 14 endangered species, Satpura Tiger Reserve was declared as the first Biosphere Reserve of Madhya Pradesh in the year 1999. It is also known as the paradise for bird lovers. More than 300 species of birds are found here.

Located at an altitude of 1330m atop the Chauragarh peak, the temple comprises 1380 steps. The temple�s courtyard is stacked with thousands of tridents offered by the devotees. The Chauragarh temple is a half-built modern structure with an idol of Lord Shiva in the sanctum.

Believed to be a sacred spot, Chhota Mahadeo is a narrow point in the valley with rocks overhanging a stream and a small spring from which water cascades down.

Built in 1875, the beautiful Christ Churchs Gothic architecture is fascinating. Its altar has a hemispherical dome on top with its ribs ending with faces of angels. The stained-glass panes adorning the walls were imported from Europe and make a gorgeous sight as sun rays pass through them.

The highest point in the Satpura range, Dhoopgarg is a famous spot for witnessing beautiful sunrise and sunset. It offers a magnificent view of the surrounding ranges.

Enveloped in dense forest and wriggling water streams, Handi Khoh is a horse-shoe shaped ravine, the edge of which drops a sheer 100m into the earth. The valley is also well-known for medicinal plants.

Jata Shankar Caves

A sacred cave with enormous boulders perched above, Jata Shankar is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva concealed himself from the wrath of Bhasmasur. A rocky formation of this place resembles the matted hair of Lord Shiva.

Mahadeo Hills

The Mahadeo hill is famous for the ancient shrine of Lord Shiva. The holy shrine holds a divine idol of Lord shiva and also has one of the most beautiful Shivalingas in the Heart of India.

Pandava caves

Five ancient dwellings excavated in the sand-stone rock in a low hill. Pachmarhi derives its name from these caves, which, as the legend goes, once provided shelter to the five Pandava brothers.

Rajat Prapat Waterfall

a 10 minutes adventurous trail from Apsara Vihar Falls, Rajat Prapat falls, rajat rapat fall cascading from the height of 107m, looks like a silver strip falling straight into the forests.

Pachmarhi is the only hill station and is the highest point in Madhya Pradesh. Pachmarhi is also often known as "Satpura ki Rani" or the "Queen of the Satpura Range". Situated at an altitude of 1,067 metres, the picturesque town is a part of UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, home to leopards and bison.

Five sandstone cut caves on the hilltop are believed to be the spot where Pandavas stayed in Pachmarhi during their exile, making it a popular spot among religious tourists. Satpura National Park

Spread over the Satpura Hills, this national park covers a large part of the Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh. Satpura is a Sanskrit word for saying “seven-hills,” which was named after the series of hills in the highlands of central India.  As a part of the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve, it covers an area of 524 sq. km.

On your safari ride in Satpura National Park, you will come across deep gorges, untrodden forests, wriggling rivulets accommodating a wide array of animals such as Water Buffaloes, Leopards, Elephants, Barasingha, Malabar Whistling Thrush, Honey Buzzard, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Paradise Fly-catcher, and the endemic  Rhesus monkeys.

Entry Fee : Permit can be availed by paying INR 1250 and Gypsy can be availed at INR 2100.

Mahadeo Hills

The basin of Narmada is separated from Wardha and Wainganga rivers on the North by Mahadeo Hills. The hills follow a general trail of East to Northeast where the north slope is gentle but the southern is steep and drops abruptly.

Mahadeo peak is one of the three highest points in Pachmarhi where you can visit the holy shrine of Lord Shiva in the cave temple Gupt Mahadev. Pandav Caves

A group of five-rock cut temples adorned with naturally grown gardens and roughly carved columns and pilasters is among the most sought-after Pachmarhi places to visit. Priyadarshini Point (Forsyth Point)

Forsyth Point was discovered by Captain Forsyth in the year 1857 which explains the name. Layers of hills rolling on each other and laden with clouds and mist is a sight to behold. Priyadarshini Point is one of the few Pachmarhi places to visit which boast of such an incredible scenery. 

A short trek of 400 meters from the parking area leads to the point. The straight views of the Handi Koh ravine are incredible and can keep you engrossed for a while.

Rajat Prapat (Silver Fall/Big Fall)

Taking a plunge from around 350 ft high cliff, Rajat Prapat looks like a silver strip that falls straight into the forests. The fall is on the other side of the mountain and to see it from one end, you have to climb uphill for a few minutes.

Once you climb, you will witness the magnificent Satpura hill range in the backdrop and the fall is enveloped in Green. Rajat Prapat is one of the most rewarding places to visit in Pachmarhi.

Apsara Vihar Waterfall

It is a small waterfall with a very inviting pool that makes for an ideal picnic spot with friends and family. The stalls selling snacks and tea can satiate your hunger after walking a downhill trail for 10 minutes to reach there.

The shallow pool collects the cold water of the fall, and you will find people diving and dipping into it. During the British rule, the English women were found bathing in the pool often who seemed like fairies to the locals and hence they called it Apsara Vihar.

Gupt Mahadev Cave Temple

This 40 feet long cave is a revered shrine of Lord Shiva which is narrow and can only accommodate around eight devotees at once. The cave has an idol of Lord Ganesha and Shiva Lingam enshrined in the most natural form. Following a path as tough as the one that leads to Gupt Mahadev and Bade Mahadev caves is an adventure in itself worth remembering.

Best of Pench National Park

Pachmarhi Catholic Church

 A peaceful oasis that can be visited on a Sunday morning for prayer and mass. Since there are not many Catholic families residing around or in Pachmarhi, this church only opens on Sunday. The old world aesthetics, tainted windows, neo-gothic altar and a distant ceiling define the charm of the church.

It was built more than 150 years ago in the 19th century and the facade of the building may look a bit dilapidated but the insides are as aesthetically sound as they may have been hundreds of years ago.  

Timing : Open only for few hours during the day on every Sunday.

Enthral in  water sports  in  Bhopal  that will not only refresh your body but relax your mind as well.

The adventure in passing through a rift by adjusting your body direction which opens to a landscape into the woods is what you get at Reechgarh. This ridge between two rocks is broader at the bottom and sticks as you look at the top of these rocks. The rift is about 400 meters long and the path is treacherous, uneven and quite bottleneck in between.

The ridge opens to the other side of the mountain and it is a great feeling to have done it. It is one of the most recommended places to visit in Pachmarhi. Climbing a couple of rocks and uneven boulders will require good shoes. The most mesmerizing factor is the cool breeze that blows in the passage.

Begum Palace Ruins

Embark on a road trip to this mysterious palace which is trying tough to withstand the test of time. The ruins are indeed very fascinating but the place has a nomadic sense attached to its location. Best of Ujjain

Bison Lodge Museum

This well-maintained museum is the starting point where you pay a fee for local sightseeing excursions that includes Jeep, guides, and permits. While the inside of the lodge houses models, graphs, maps, and pictures of Pachmarhi rich flora, fauna, history and places of interest, the outside is adorned with a huge garden where you can sit and enjoy the serenity of this hill station.

Stuffed animals like Crocodiles, Lions, and Tigers, etc. are also on display at this museum. Built in the year 1862, Bison Lodge is one of the oldest buildings in Pachmarhi, and used to be the former residence of Captain Forsyth.

Timing : 8 AM to 12 PM and then 4 PM to 7 PM on all days of the week except Monday.

Vanashree Vihar (Pansy Pool)

This is a stunning small lake where you can go boating for a couple of hours. The bordering restaurants and eateries are the main highlights of this place where people can enjoy snacks with a view of the lake. For a breezy evening, Vanashree vihar can serve as an ultimate escape spot.

There are few activities like swings, quad riding, horse and camel rides etc near the lake where you can indulge yourself and spend some quality time.

This crystal clear natural pool situated about a kilometer ahead of Reech Garh is one of the lesser-known getaways in Pachmarhi. Reaching here demands a bit of walking where you walk on a plain ground for around ten minutes followed with a 300 m long steep trek that ends at the mouth of this spring. It is a picturesque hilltop pool that can be best visited during or post monsoon.

Timing : 24 hours. Wednesday closed for a half day.

Suggested time required : 3 to 6 hours.

Dutchess Fall

Being one of the most beautiful falls in Pachmarhi, Duchess fall attracts hordes of tourists every year. A 10 minutes long arduous downhill trek can bestow you with a magnificent sight of a cascade and a soothing roar of the water plummeting from a height.

Pachmarhi, Queen of Satpura or Satpura ki Rani (in Hindi ), has an abundance of eye-tempting attractions to explore. Although the place is lesser known, once you visit Pachmarhi, its beauty will leave you in awe.  The good thing is that the government has kept it in the same condition, which means a plethora of unadulterated natural beauty for all travel junkies. Encompassed with lush greenery, rich wildlife, pristine waterfalls and picturesque landscapes, this Central Indian spot offers a high level of tranquillity for those who prefer hill stations over beaches.

So, being a wanderlust Indian myself, I am always keen on exploring those untraversed spots and so my curiosity led me to this beauty. I visited Pachmarhi with my family and booked a local gipsy camp to enjoy the beauty of this place better. We covered several attractions and I must say, the warmth and remarkable aura of Pachmarhi left me awestruck and happy.

In this Pachmarhi Travel Guide, I will be listing all the places you must visit when heading to this beautiful undiscovered part of India.

An Introduction to Pachmarhi

Located at a height of 1607 meters above sea level, Pachmarhi is in the second largest state, Madhya Pradesh. Since it’s the only hill station and the highest point in the state, it serves as a vantage point and is the most visited by locals and tourists across the nation.

The place is also home to wild animals – leopards and bison. The town isn’t very large and is a perfect cosy retreat for tourists from metropolitan cities.

Pachmarhi Travel Guide Facts

Some amazing fun facts I learned about this place are:

Pachmarhi was named a Biosphere reserve by UNESCO in May 2009.

A lot of cave paintings found in the caves of Pachmarhi are believed to be about 10,000 years old.

Dhoopgarh is the highest peak point of this hill station. During my trip, I visited here during sunset, and I can say that the views from the peak were unmatchable.

The name of this place, Pachmarhi, is derived from the words “Panch (Five) and Marhi (Caves)”.

Many Bollywood movies have been shot in this beautiful location. When I visited Reechgarh, a local guide told me that scenes of the popular movie Ashoka the Great, (starring Shah Rukh Khan & Kareena Kapoor), were shot here.

Bee Falls Pachmarhi

Amongst the count of waterfalls, the Bee Falls Pachmarhi is the most renowned. Also known as Jamuna Prapat, it offers the most extreme tranquillity one could ask for. The hiking trail, which is a wonderland in itself, leads visitors to this waterfall. Amid the trail, you’ll see 2-3 picturesque spots. Tourists here can be often found pushing and shoving to get a click with the mesmerizing view, especially the first-timers.

People sit and relax by the brooklet, while many dip their feet in the water and enjoy fish offering a very natural and free pedicure. It may be a little exhausting to hike down to the Bee Falls Pachmarhi, but as you arrive, the drizzle from the fall, the soothing sounds of gushing water, and the view will be enough to take away the fatigue.

Jatashankar Caves – A Lord Shiva Temple

The Jatashankar Caves is the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage site. It is said to be the place where Lord Shiva concealed himself from the wrath of Bhasmasur. Although it’s a long walk to reach the temple entrance, it’s all worth it. On the way to the entrance, you will come across street sellers selling different items such as pipe fryums, papad, labdo ber, and herbal oil.

Here at the Jatashankar Caves, water seeps from the rock above and flows into the temple’s courtyard, making one’s feet numb. You may come across a lady, who sits on the cliff, and chants mantras of Lord Shiva, and her voice echoes can be heard throughout the entire cave. There is a cave built in the rock, from which you have to stoop to reach and worship before the idol of Lord Shiva.

Bade Mahadev Caves

Sitting in the lap of rugged nature is this Lord Shiva shrine, which goes by the name of the Bade Mahadev Caves. The temple also consists of the idols of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Ganesha, which are of major significance in the Hindu religion. At the entrance to the cave, there is a lot of Trishuls and Damru, symbolizing the tenacity of Lord Shiva.

Natural water streams inside the cave, which forms a holy pool. It is believed that whoever bathes in this pool, can wash away their sins. Here also, you will have to stoop to get to the end point of the cave, where you will find the idol of Mahadev and all the above-mentioned Gods.

As an extra travel tip for your visit to the Bade Mahadev Caves, beware of the monkeys roaming around, as they can snatch your food and bag.

Pandav Gufa Caves

Pandav Caves or Gufa are well renowned and have a reference to Indian mythological characters Pandavas, hence the name. These caves are said to be the place where Pandavas ( 5 sons of Kunti ) stayed during their exile period. It is now a protected tourist spot, and people from all over India visit here to witness this place. Built in the 9th century, these caves are adorned by beautiful sculptures and ancient carvings.

A pathway from a large beautiful garden leads to the Caves.  Here you can see a group of five small caves, covered with grills, and carved on a hilltop. The caves are covered with lush greenery and provide a tranquil aura away from bustling cities.

This was, however, the least interesting place for me in Pachmarhi. 

Reechgarh is a huge cave hidden in the folds of Pachmarhi. A myth says that a giant bear (reech in Hindi) used to live in this cave, and hence, a local legend gave this place the name Reechgarh. Here you’ll get to see sunshine peeking through craggy rocks, making it a beautiful place to take pictures. The climb above the cave offers vistas of lush greenery and this cave serves as a natural air conditioner since a cool wind blows through them.

However, to enjoy the best views of this place, you will have to hike down through the streak boulders. And, while doing so, you need to be very careful to avoid tripping over.

Dhoopgarh is the highest point in Pachmarhi and is located at a height of 1352 meters. It serves the most eye-tempting views of the place. It is the best place to admire sunrises and sunsets, and hence, most people come here during these times only. The vistas are truly incredible, and people often enjoy this view with snacks and tea.

However, you can only reach here by trekking up to the peak. The route isn’t easy either. The path passes through certain waterfalls and valleys, therefore making the way as steep and challenging as you can imagine.

For first-time visitors it’s best to visit Dhoopgarp with an experienced Pachmarhi Travel Guide, as the hike can be a little overwhelming.

Being one of the most beautiful ravines in central India, Handi Koh is a v-shaped ravine covering a 300-foot-deep precipice in the heart of a dense forest. This place has a rich mythological history and is said to be closely linked with Lord Shiva. Although it was said to be a lake earlier, it dried up due to the wrath of a giant snake. Now Handi Koh is well known for hiking, trekking, horse riding, and photography.

Here you will get a view from the cliff of a ravine laden with trees, and greenery. Local people will hand over binoculars and telescopes for a fee. Indigenous people use a rope to get down into the jungle to get herbs for medicinal virtues. 

Best Time to Visit Pachmarhi

The best time to visit Pachmarhi is anytime year-round, thanks to its pleasant weather and topography. The days here are pleasant with chilly nights, which makes it a perfect getaway destination. However it would be best to avoid the monsoon (July to September) since the precipitation is quite high in this region.

In my experience, the best time to visit Pachmarhi would be in the summer season (April to June), which is perfect to escape the dry heat of the plains. Not only is it less crowded, but it also tends to be much cooler as compared to other hotter parts of the country. The weather is just as perfect as any hill station encounters. Plus, what’s the best time to enjoy playing around in waterfalls? It’s always the summer.

How to Reach Pachmarhi

Being the only hill station of Madhya Pradesh, it’s the most visited and hence is well connected with major cities of the region. Bhopal is one of the nearest cities to reach here (210 km). Those taking a flight from Delhi, Mumbai or any other Indian city, can utilize Raja Bhoj Airport to reach Bhopal and then take a taxi to Pachmarhi (which is a 4-hour drive).

If you’re someone who prefers travelling by train, then a useful Pachmarhi Travel Guide tip is to take a train to reach Pipariya Railway Station, the closest to Pachmarhi (only 54 km). This train station is linked directly with several major stations including Varanasi, Surat, Delhi, Nagpur, Kolkata, etc. When you reach Pipariya, take a taxi to Pachmarhi and you will reach in about an hour.

If you prefer a road trip, then you are most welcome to bring your vehicle. Although driving can be exhausting, you will get to enjoy the stunning vistas as you drive. Remember that the travelling time will depend upon the traffic and whether you make stops in the middle.

For the road route, you can also opt for a bus ride. Yes, several state-owned and private buses are accessible for Pachmarhi from nearby cities like Bhopal, Jabalpur, Nagpur, Indore, and renowned tourist attractions like Kanha National Park and Pench National Park. Being a cantonment town, the road conditions here are quite phenomenal.

Accommodations in Pachmarhi

It makes sense that being a popular spot amongst the locals and tourists, there are a handful of accommodations accessible in Pachmarhi. From budget stays to chic hotels, there is a suitable option for everyone. That said, budgeted hotels are available for a stay starting from INR 600 to INR 1500. Although these hotels are affordable the quality of stay provided isn’t questionable.

But for me, the budget wasn’t the issue, so I decided to book a lavish hotel. And since hill stations call for a chic stay with a mind-blowing view from the balcony, I went for a hotel that offers the same. Fortunately, there are plenty of incredible options nearby Satpura National Park, Dhoopgarh, and Pandav Caves. Final Takeaway

I have always preferred natural beauty over man-made attractions and this place offered it all. And indeed, a trip to a cosy hill station can better rejuvenate your entire soul. Pachmarhi is truly a gem brimming with a myriad of remarkable attractions and offers the most tranquil vistas you could ask for.

The best thing I realized here was that even with an excessive population, such a mesmerizing gift of nature still exists in the country. If you’re in India or ever plan to visit here, then make sure to spend some time exploring the beauty of this hill station.

Not only will this place offer you peace, but will take you a step closer to the tales of Indian mythology. I will also recommend you carry strong grip shoes for rugged trails, sunglasses and a hat to avoid being smothered in dust, as well as some motion sickness tablets.

Pachmarhi (पचमढ़ी Pacmaṛhī ) is a city in Madhya Pradesh . It is the only hill station in the central region of India, in the Satpura range, 3,500 ft (1,100 m) above sea level. Pachmarhi is called Satpura ki Rani meaning Queen of Satpura .

The area was discovered in the modern times by Captain James Forsyth of the British army along with Subhedar Major Nathooramji Powar (who was later made Kothwal of Pachmarhi) In 1857, Pachmarhi became a hill station and sanatorium for British troops in the Central Provinces of India. The population in 1901 was 3020, doubling during the hot summer months. Pachmarhi also served as the summer capital.

Pachmarhi is a tourist retreat; its elevation from the sea level and the forests of the Satpuras, with their streams and waterfalls, are picturesque and home to much wildlife. Pachmarhi lies within the Pachmarhi Biosphere Preserve, created in 1999 to link two forest reserves and Satpura National Park into a larger wildlife conservation area. It also has Dhupgarh -- the highest point in Central India.

Pachmarhi also has a lot of cave paintings in the forests, some of which have been dated to be as much as 10,000 years old.

Pachmarhi can also be reached directly by bus from Bhopal , which is 210 km away by road, Itarsi or Jabalpur. It can also be reached from Nagpur . The Mahrashtra State Road Transport Corporation has started 2x2 luxury buses, which take 8 hours to reach Pachmarhi.

Get around [ edit ]

While there are several sites within 5-6 km radius, the best way of getting around is to hire a four-wheeler, Maruti Gypsy being the norm in Pachmarhi. Gypsy can be hired through open market or hotel can arrange with Gypsy operators. It gets comfortable if one visits places of heart-attraction in Pachmarhi in their own vehicle.

One excellent and economic option is to share a Gypsy for sightseeing. They make shared tour keeping in mind the preferences of tourists (for example families or couples are not mixed with group of boys). You would really need to look around for providers of shared tours because everyone tries to promote full hire of vehicles.

Some of the best cave shelters and groups of shelters around Pachmarhi are: Dhuandhar, approached from the footpath to Apsara Vihar, the paintings mostly in white include a group of archers with the typical Gond bun and hooped earrings. Bharat Neer (Dorothy Deep), has well executed animal paintings and when excavated in the 1930s yielded many pottery shards and microliths. Asthachal (Monte Rosa), there are four shelters with paintings, comparatively early linear drawings. Along the northern side of Jambu Dwip valley are some six shelters with many paintings of animals and human figures, including a detailed battle scene.  
• Chauragarh . 4 km from Mahadeo, it is one of Satpura's prominent land marks, the summit crowned with emblems of Mahadeo worship.  
• Chhota Mahadeo . Revered as a sacred spot, this is a narrow point in the valley with rocks overhanging a stream and a spring from where water cascades down.

Built in 1875 by the British, this Church's architecture is fascinating; its 'sanctum-sanctorum' has a hemispherical dome on top with its ribs ending with faces of angels. The stained glass panes adorning the walls and rear of the altar were imported from Europe. They present a gorgeous view as the sun rays pass through them. The nave of the church does not contain even a single pillar for support. The baptismal font is a rare brass piece and the bell is as old as the church and its chimes can be heard from a long distance.

• Harper's Cave . So named because of one of its paintings - a man seated and playing a harp is close to the Jata Shankar Shrine. A terrace that runs the length of the South, South East and East faces of Kites Crag has some fine cave paintings, the majority of which are in white or outlined in red.  
• Irene Pool . This pool was discovered by Irene Bose, wife of Justice Vivian Bose, and named after her. The route upstream leads to a cave, through which the stream goes underground and then over a khud in a series of falls.  
• Jalawataran ( Duchess Falls ). The descent is steep and the trek strenuous for almost all of the 4 km to the base of the fall's first cascade.

• 22.48062 78.44058 8 Jata Shankar . A sacred cave under a mass of loose boulders in which the Jambu Dwip stream has its source. A rocky formation of this place resembles the matted locks of Lord Shiva, hence the name.  
• Mahadeo . Regarded as holy for countless of generations, Mahadeo hill has a shrine with an idol of Lord Shiva and an impressive Shivlinga. On the East side of the hill is an excellent cave shelter with beautiful cave paintings.  
• 22.45888 78.43287 9 Pandav Caves . Five ancient dwellings excavated in the sandstone rock in a low hill. Pachmarhi derives its name from these caves which, as the legend goes, once provided sanctuary to the five Pandav brothers. These caves are now protected monuments.

• Sangam ( Fuller's Khud - Waters Meet ). This is the lowest of the picnic spots on the Denwa and offers fairly good bathing pools both below and above the meeting of the waters.

The high peaks of Dhoopgarh and Mahadeo, Bori's legendary teak and bamboo forests, Pachmarhi's fascinating natural beauty of deep valleys, high mountains, rivulets, waterfalls and Tawa's vast reservoir combine to give this park unique beauty and a breathtaking variety of attractions. The park is home to the bison, tiger, Leopard, bear, four-horned deer, blue-bull and a rich variety of birds.  
• Sunder Kund ( Saunder's Pool ). Crossing the stream below Duchess Fall and following a footpath about 2.5 km in a south- west direction, brings one to a huge rocky pool that is excellent for a refreshing swim.  
• Tridhara ( Piccadily Circus ). A popular picnic spot where two streams meet in a junction.  
• Vanshree Vihar ( Pansy Pool ). A beautiful spot on the Denwa stream, cool and shady among trees, ferns and semi-tropical vegetation.

Panchmarhi is a great place to have typical Gujarati/Maharashtrian/Jain food. Chunmun cottage located near B-Fall and lake is one of the best places. It is easy to cover some of the other nearby vista points after lunch.

Other kinds of food are also easily available at Panchmarhi and there is no need to worry about food during a trip there.

Pachmarhi is full of hotels.You will find a hotel after every 50-100 metres in the market area. The bottom of the pool is clearly visible despite all the movement and the water does not come higher than the waist in most of the parts of the pool. It is a perfect place to spend a couple of hours, just lazing around in the cool water. Reaching here demands a bit of walking where you walk on the plain ground for around 10 minutes followed by a 300 m long steep trek that ends at the mouth of this spring. Pachmarhi, the tallest and also called the queen of Satpura resides alluringly among the ranges of Satpura. This hill station is situated in the district of Hoshangabad in Madhya Pradesh . History of Pachmarhi

Panch means five and Mari means caves, it is Believed that this is how Pachmarhi was named. Some people also believes that these marhi(caves) were built by the five Pandava Mahabharata brothers. These marhi (caves) are situated on top of the hills in Pachmarhi. Good king Bhawut Singh ruled over Pachmarhi and then Britishers took it over. Pachmarhi sits in the lap of nature and is blessed with amazing hills, beautiful waterfalls and a variety of flora and fauna. It is preferred by tourists travelling to Bhopal , as well as Indore .

Located in the Satpura range of mountains, it is rightly nicknamed The queen of Satpura , as it is the tallest place in this range. 

It is serene and peaceful and the most remarkable tourist destination in recent times with many sightseeing options. Not only nature lovers and photographers but also adventure lovers can make the most out of their trip to Pachmarhi .

About Pachmarhi

Pachmarhi was a lesser-known and hidden place until Capt James Forsythe, a British Army officer, founded it in 1857. It is placed at a height of 1067 metres and has a divine connection with Lord Shiva the shrines of whom have been located in the caves here. It is also said that Pandavas came here to spend their days of exile with their wife Draupadi. So, backpackers and travel enthusiasts dig into the realms of Pachmarhi tourism . 

Places to visit in Pachmarhi

Bison lodge interpretation centre.

The name of Capt Fedrick Forsythe is very significant to Pachmarhi. 

Bison Lodge and Interpretation Centre was once his house which is now converted into a museum and depicts life-size models of the flora and fauna. 

It also houses various pictures, models, graphs and maps which give an exact impression of the actual animals and birds found here. It has marked its place in history as it is one of the oldest museums in Madhya Pradesh. 

Located around 2 km away from the main Bus Station, this is the first place in Pachmarhi to visit to obtain tourist permits for various Pachmarhi tourist places . One can also book jeeps and guides for the Pachmarhi sightseeing . The tour guides take visitors to all the places to visit in Pachmarhi guiding you for the full course of the day. 

Bison Lodge Interpretation Centre is open from 8 am to 6 pm every day.

Pandav Caves

If you are a history buff and legends interest you, then this is a place for you. 

According to a legend, Pandavas came to this place along with their wife, Draupadi. During their exile, they excavated five caves meaning ‘Panch’ in Hindi, for them to lay low and to pass their time in anonymity.

Along the premises of this place is a beautifully done-up garden with all the seasonal flowers and other local flora. The greenery here is a treat to watch. 

Pandav Caves are open from 7 am to 7 pm, every day.

Dhoopgarh is the highest point in Pachmarhi at a height of 1350 metres and the views from here are breathtaking. 

People come here for the picturesque views of Sunrise and Sunsets. 

At night, the lights of neighbouring towns like Itarsi are visible from here which gives a mesmerising look and is a photographer’s delight. This place looks beautiful all year through however the best season to visit is monsoons as the place gets filled up with soft cottony clouds and engulfs itself in the greens. 

It is possible to trek to Dhoopgarh or reach it by vehicle. 

Dhoppgarh is open from 8 am to 6 pm, all days of the week. 

Jata Shankar Caves

One gets enchanted with the beauty and gets mesmerised by the magnificence of Ja ta Shankar Caves. 

In order to reach the caves, there is a flight of steps going into the depth of a ravine between the huge rocks. Moving towards the end of the steps is Trishul of Lord Shiva and naturally formed Lingam. 

I have visited caves having a Shiva lingam at Badami Cave Temples which also has beautiful sculptures and carvings.

If you are interested in Geology and are interested in various formations on the surface and beneath the earth, this place is a must-visit as the caves house the stalactites . I have seen stalactites formation in Meghalaya in India and Halong Bay in Vietnam and the formations are breathtaking!

As per the legend, Lord Shiva hid in this place from Bhramasur. One can find two ponds here, which are enriched by seasonal springs, one with cold water and the other with hot water. The structure of this cave resembles Sheshnag which is a Snake god with 1000 heads. This shrine holds great importance for the locals and the people staying around.

Rajat Pratap Falls

Emerging from the trek of a small Apsara Vihar waterfall through the rocky terrain is a tall waterfall of height 350 feet and stands 30th in India for its height. 

Raja Parapat Waterfalls seems like a silver lining emerging from beautiful greens which is why it is also called Silver Falls. 

This place is best for photography, videography, trekking and bird watching too. It is open throughout the day and the best time to visit is during or after monsoons. This fall is one of the biggest of the many waterfalls Pachmarhi tourism is blessed with which is why it is one of the best places to visit in Pachmarhi.

Bee Falls 

The name itself suggests a connection with the Bees. 

It is named Bee Falls as it sounds like a buzzing bee from a distance. It is the most visited waterfall in Pachmarhi, highly subscribed by locals and tourists. 

This natural waterfall is sourced by nearby perennial small streams which are in full during monsoons. The place is very scenic. Not only is the waterfall beautiful but also the trek to reach the place is very beautiful. One can even reach the pool of this waterfall and a take dip there. 

There are other waterfalls in Pachmarhi as well like the Duchess Fall and Apsara Falls which also form an important part of Pachmarhi famous places .

Reech means Bear.

The name itself suggests it’s an abode of Bears.

With its huge rock-like and cave-like shelters, it boasts of being home to the magnificent animal, the Bear. One has to hike around a kilometre to reach this place. One has to go up and down huge boulders to move around this place which reminds us of our Bollywood movies. One can click lots of photographs here as the views are outstanding.

Chauragarh Temple

Chauragarh temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. 

There is a tradition to offer Trishul to the Lord in this temple. On the day of Shivratri, many devotees come here and offer Trishul as heavy as 150 kg and as long as 15 feet in height. 

These offerings on Shivratri are considered to be auspicious and a thanksgiving gesture to the Lord for fulfilling their wishes. The trek is tough however the scenes from the temple are breathtaking and photography worthy.

Priyadarshini Point/ Forsythe Point  

Places to visit in Pachmarhi are all close to nature – green clad mountains, waterfalls and numerous nature trails. 

Forsythe Point gets its name as Capt Forsythe first came to this place and discovered Pachmarhi. It’s a beautiful viewpoint with various ranges of hills overlapping each other and clad with soft clouds creating a mist in the area. 

Taking a camera to this point is a must. One can reach this point after a trek of about 400 metres and view one of the most exquisite sites in Pachmarhi.

Mahadeo Hills & Gupt Mahadev 

Pachmarhi in monsoon is breathtakingly beautiful and serene. 

Located at around 10-12 km from the Pachmarhi town, Mahadeo Hills is the northern part of the Satpura range. 

These hills are one of the three highest peaks in Pachmarhi and house two ancient temples of Bada Mahadev and Gupt Mahadev. It is 40 feet long and happens to be one of the ancient cave temples in Pachmarhi. 

The inner Sanctorum of this temple is very narrow, one has to actually squeeze in to get there and can accommodate only 7-8 people at a time.  This is a place where spirituality and adventure go hand in hand.

Best Places to visit near Pachmarhi 

There are two places which cannot be ignored when we talk about Pachmarhi sightseeing. They are Tawa Dam and Satpura National Park in Madhai.

Tawa Dam and Reservoir

Tawa Dam has been constructed on the confluence of two rivers Tawa and Denwa. 

Tawa river is a tributary of the Narmada river and Denwa is a tributary of the Tawa river. This dam was constructed keeping in mind the water and hydropower supply to the people of Madhya Pradesh. The confluence is encircled by the Satpura ranges making it extremely panoramic. This reservoir is always full as the rivers that feed it are perennial rivers. 

Sunsets viewed from the dam site are loved by tourists and photographers. Adjacent to the dam is a beautiful resort of Madhya Pradesh Tourism. 

One can also go for a cruise on the river which is organised by them. While cruising, one can spot marsh crocodiles. Boating and bird watching are other attractions here which keep tourists glued to the property. 

Satpura National Park, Madhai

Also known as Satpura Tiger Reserve, it is included in Project Tiger since the year 2000. 

It covers both Bori and Pachmarhi National Parks and covers Hoshangabad and Chinnwara districts of Madhya Pradesh. 

It is home to various animals like Leopard, Sambar, Cheetal, Nilgai, Bear, Black Buck etc. It is also home to various birds and innumerable plant species. One can approach the Park from Madhai which is a part of Satpura Bioreserve. 

There is a Madhya Pradesh Tourism resort at the edge of Denwa River in Madhai. Tickets for Jungle Safari can be booked here. One has to boat across to reach the National Park and stay at the Forest resort there as well. The calm and serene water, scenic beauty and the location of this place rightly explain why it is on the top of the tourism map of Pachmarhi as also Madhya Pradesh.

Pachmarhi hill station is one of its kind in Madhya Pradesh. Owing to its restorative and rehabilitative weather, any season is great to visit. 

However, if you want to enjoy all the waterfalls and the engulfed greens, monsoons are the time. Pachmarhi monsoon gives the best scenery that one may have seen only in pictures and paintings.  

Summers are very pleasant and the temperature ranges from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. When the whole country is troubled by rising in temperatures and heat waves, Pachmarhi offers cool and pleasant weather with blue skies and fresh breathable air. 

Pachmarhi is located at a height, winters are chilly here and tourists are advised to carry thick woollens to protect themselves from the cold. Temperature ranges from 4 to 14 degrees Celsius during this time.

4 days travel itinerary of Pachmarhi, Complete guide

When I was making a travel plan for visiting interesting points of Madhya Pardesh , Pachmarhi was not the part of my itinerary. Then a friend suggested me to add Pachmarhi in the list, honestly I did not heard much about the place. After surfing net for a while, I got to knew that Pachmarhi is the only hill town of Madhya Pradesh and famous for its forest and wildlife.

Pachmarhi, only hill-town in MP

This town has average elevation of 1100 meters. Dhupgarh, the highest point of Madhya Pradesh at 1350 meter also located in this region . Once, I had read about Satpura’s deep forest in our school text book. Fortunately, I got a chance to revise that chapter, there were many beautiful hills, deep & green valleys, rare medicinal forest and so many waterfalls in surrounding of Pachmarhi.

The town have some naturally formed caves which have religious importance too. There are several beautiful waterfalls around Pachmarhi town lies in the forest, good to test your trekking strength. Due to its rich ecosystem, area around Pachmarhi also added in the list of UNESCO biosphere reserve .

Nowadays, Pachmarchi also offers some adventure activities to attracts young and enthusiastic visitors. All these qualities make Pachmarhi a perfect blend for all kind of visitors; It may be a wild life photographer, nature lover, adventurer or religious one. And only after visiting Pachmarhi you will know, why this place known as ‘Queen of Satpura’ .

Pachmarhi travel itinerary for 4 days

As soon you land in this tourist town you got 4 days itinerary of Pachmarhi on back of visiting card of any hotel/tour operator. Mostly, all the important attractions like cave temples, scenic beauty of deep forest and waterfalls around Pachmarhi town have been covered in this 4 day itinerary.

You can categorize these tourists spot in two; places falls under forest area and non-forest area. To visit the spot under forest region, you need to take prior permission from Bison Lodge tourist information center to enter in forest reserved area.

Bison Lodge is the oldest building of Pachmarhi town . It was constructed in 1862 as a temporary residence of Captain Forsyth then forest officer. Captain and his team use to stay here during exploration and survey of the surrounding forests. In the later period this town developed as a British military station.

Even, as on today most of the part of Pachmarhi covered with military cant and very little area for the civil town. Now this is converted into a museum and information center for the tourists. The gallery display information about flora-fauna and tribal life of the region. It also display life size statue of Bison, tiger and other wild animals and bird.

Gypsy for Pachmarhi exploration price

Gypsy is the common option available to get around Pachmarhi town, cost you Rs. 1425/- per day . And for visiting places inside reserve forest you have to take forest entry permit of gypsy from Bison lodge that will cost you additional Rs. 1100/- which include guide charges.

Apart from gypsy you can hire motorbike or a bicycle. It is nice to spare one day from your trip for cycling around the town. For commuting within the town you do not need any means of transport because it is quite small town and everything you get on walking distance.

Valley & Waterfalls in Pachmarhi

Pandav gufa, rock cut shelters.

The very first landmark that draw your attention is Pandav Gufa, This is a group of five rock cut shelter and believed to have a close connection with Pandavas (Characters of Mahabharata ).

Pachmarhi got its name because of these five rock cut shelters . It is believed Pandavas had spent some time here during their exile period.

But a study tells that these rock cut structure belongs to Gupta periods ( approx 1500 years old) and was dug for the Buddhist monks. The top portion of this big rock is covered with ancient bricks, and from there you can have 360 degree view of surroundings.

This simple looking rock shelters is a result of great efforts and dedication of that time. A beautiful parks also has been developed on the foot of these rocks which have many varieties of plants, flowers and cactus.

Udaygiri-Khandegiri cave in Bhubaneswar

This is closest view point of town, where one can witness the bowl shape valley, It is wide in the center and narrow at the both ends. The very famous Chauragarh temple can be seen from here. You will find some people, those sell the view of temple using binocular.

Priyadarshni Point

It is the next view point of Pachmarhi town after Handi-Kho , you have to walk around 400 meters from the road to reach this point. It is one of the most eye catching point of the Pachmarhi. Beware this point may motivate you for the suicide because it looks so perfect from a standing cliff. Green Valley

Green Valley

Its another beautiful point in between Mahadev caves and town to click some nice pictures of the surroundings. Here, you can have panoramic view of the green hills and valley.

Sunset at Rajendra Giri

This park was developed in the memory of visit of Dr Rajendra Parsad that time president of India. It is a beautiful park having multiple species of rose and other flowers, people can enjoy the beautiful view of Sun-set.

Waterfalls in Pachmarhi reserve forest

It is the most popular among all waterfalls around Pachmarhi. It is a two level waterfall, the upper one is almost flat where elders and children can enjoy. And second level is vertical where water fall from a height of more than 100 feet.

There are hundreds of stair steps to reach the foot of the fall. These steps are big and steep that may be challenging for kids and elders. One can reach to the toe of water fall using stairs and can enjoy the bath under the waterfall. This waterfall got its name because of sound generated which seems like humming sound of bee.

Silver and Apsara Fall

Silver fall, Apsara fall and Panchali kund are the three level of same water stream. The lowest one is Silver fall, where water fall in a deep valley from a height of 400 feet. Because of its distance from view point, it look like a white and thin line in a big valley. The view of the valley is amazing here.

In the upper stream of the Silver fall, water collect in the naturally build pool which is quite shallow and easily accessible. But these days quantity of water in the pool is small because of lesser rain.

Before independence British lady used to enjoy this pool, so local tribes named it ‘ Apsara fall ‘ because of their white skin. Panchali Kund or Dropadi Kund is a small pool in the upper stream of Apsara fall, where the main stream of water split in five smaller streams.

one has to walk around 3 Km up and down to reach these points through forest. But the track is not much difficult so kids can also enjoy here.

Duchess Fall

This is also popular waterfall and big like Bee Fall. It lies in the remote forest 12 km from the town. One has to track 4 km through forest to reach up to the fall.

It is a natural habitat of Bear (Reech) which located near the way to Dhupgarh . The place is quite amazing, it looks like one rock fallen on another and make an entrance at bottom. After crossing this entrance, you find yourself in a closed compound of natural rock. It looks like an open theater, which have big entrance at one side and narrow exit on opposite end.

Dhupgarh, highest point of MP

It is the highest point of Satpura range and Madhya Pradesh. It is located at a distance of 10 Km which is reachable by motor vehicle. On reaching the top, you find an unimaginable flat ground at such height.

This point is famous for the sun-set and sun-rise view. There is a old building which consist a gallery, where you can see the photograph of surroundings captured by some known photographers.

The area is well maintained, there are big flat stairs & benches to sit and enjoy the view of surrounding valleys. On the way to Dhupgarh you may enjoy steep ride along with the natural beauty of forest. And if you are lucky, you can have glimpse of any forest animal like bison .

Pachmarhi temples

Pachmarhi also have some important sacred places around, mainly dedicated to Lord Shiva ( Mahadeva ). The most sacred is Chauragarh temple located at the 2nd highest peak, where people offer Trishul .

Jatashankar Mahadev , Bada Mahadev and Gupt Mahadev are other important sacred place located within natural caves. These places are not commercialize as you see on other places, visiting these temple in completely natural environment is a different experience.

  Suzdal is one of the most popular destinations on the Golden Ring and the whole city is often described as an open-air museum.  The city has no railway station and practically no heavy industry, meaning that is has preserved its provincial charm and a great deal of architectural monuments.

  From Moscow, Suzdal is not as easy to get to as Sergiev Posad (the closest Golden Ring city to the capital) but it is worth going the extra distance as Suzdal provides more of a contrast from Moscow.  If you make use of high-speed trains it is possible and not too demanding to visit for even just a day, but of course spending the night there is recommended to soak in the atmosphere or to combine it with a visit to neighbouring Vladimir.  As the city is a very popular tourist destination you will have no problem finding a cafe or guesthouse there.  There is practically no public transport in the city, but the city is small and most sights are located relatively close to each other.

Direct to Suzdal

  Buses directly to Suzdal leave from Moscow’s Schyolkovsky Bus Station.  There are about 9 buses a day and it takes around 4½ hours depending on traffic.  The buses stop at Vladimir too.  Using this option will mean a rather exhausting day trip.

Orientation and Main Sights

  Suzdal is a relatively small city and it is not difficult to walk around the city to see most of the sights.  

  The main road in the city is Ulitsa Lenina which runs north across the whole city.  

  The main sights of Suzdal are located either on or just off this road, including the two main sights: the Suzdal Kremlin in the south and the Spaso-Yevfimiev Monastery in the north.

  Suzdal is famous for its medovukha (mead) which is an alcoholic drink made out of honey.  It can be drunk either hot or cold, meaning it perfect in both summer and winter, and you will find it on practically every menu in the city.  There are various flavours of the drink available and even a non-alcoholic version.  In addition to medovukha, you can find all traditional Russian souvenirs in the city and there is a big souvenir market on Torgovaya Ploschad.
