This addition to the LEGO video gaming library this time focuses on the fictional land of Chima, in which players must help Laval the lion embark on a journey to unlock the secret of the legendary Golden CHI Armor before Cragger manipulates its awesome power!

The gameplay consists of guiding Laval and his friends through several locations (spanning 15 levels) including Lion Temple, Gorilla Forest, Croc Swamp and much more. Throughout the levels, players need to gather numerous studs, as well as special collectibles like Character Tokens, Character Biographies and Red Bricks (which unlock abilities in the Extras menu).

The Touch Screens for 3DS and DS versions are utilised to change characters and accessing a map of the current level, while the gameplay occurs on the Top Screen. In contrast, the PS Vita displays all the action on one screen.

Laval's Journey is the second entry in the LEGO Legends of Chima series, after Legends of Chima: Speedorz (available on the LEGO website and iOS).

The three videogames will each provide an entirely unique and exciting adventure that builds to the next experience and complement the just announced LEGO Legends of Chima™ universe of products, which includes construction sets, vehicles, TV content and more. LEGO Legends of Chima™ is a fantasy adventure set in land inhabited by different magical animal tribes and tells the classic story of good and evil, friendship and family.

LEGO® Legends of Chima™: Speedorz™ , a racing mini-game produced by TT Games and 4T2, revs its way on to LEGO.com today and iOS tomorrow, January 3. Players will race against famous Chima™ characters, battle through iconic Chima™ locations, and unleash the power of CHI to boost their Speedorz, all while collecting studs and rewards to unlock more Speedorz and customize characters. The player's goal is to become the ultimate champion and win Golden CHI, which transforms the world map and opens a new race level.

LEGO® Legends of Chima™: Laval's Journey, developed by TT Games, is scheduled to be available for the Nintendo 3DS™ hand-held system and for the PS®Vita system in summer 2013 and for the Nintendo DS™ hand-held system in fall 2013. Players will embark on an amazing adventure into the world of Chima™ where the brave warrior Laval and his allies are called upon to fight for justice.

In Fall 2013, LEGO® Legends of Chima™ Online , a free-to-play, online world developed by WB Games Montréal, will provide kids with a safe and incredibly immersive connected game experience. Players will be able to build and customize their kingdom in the world of Chima™, explore massive environments like the Falling Leaves Forest, take on missions to help Laval and his friends, uncover hidden secrets and treasures, earn rewards, and use LEGO bricks to build weapons, gadgets, and more!

The Chima™ Vault, which houses an exclusive reward system, will be accessible to players on LEGO.com/chima. While playing LEGO Legends of Chima™: Speedorz™ and LEGO Legends of Chima™: Laval's Journey, players will be able to earn points. These points can be redeemed through the Vault for a variety of unique content that players can use to enhance their experience in LEGO® Legends of Chima™ Online.

The game takes the player on a journey throughout much of Chima, playing as Laval, Eris, Gorzan, and many other characters from 8 different tribes and the nomad group. There are 10 levels and 5 main hub areas.

Cragger is trying to gain a powerful armor called the Triple CHI Armor, which can give him immense power. Laval soon discovers his plans and together with his friends, goes on a quest to stop him.

Lego Legends of Chima: Laval's Journey

By mining as many iconic franchises as possible - Lord of the Rings , Star Wars , DC Comics , and so on - the Lego series has become a firm favourite among nerdy film fans, parents, and kids alike.

But, as entertaining as those games are, the franchise hasn't moved on very far from the template it laid down with the very first Lego Star Wars title.

The same is true of Lego Legends of Chima: Laval's Journey , only this time there's no familiar, heartwarming brand to distract you from the increasingly tired puzzle-platforming gameplay.

If you've played a Lego game before then you'll know exactly what to expect from Laval's Journey . You control a single character at a time from a cast of many, but you can (and must) swap between them to use their special abilities in solving environmental puzzles.

Main character Laval has a deafening roar, for example, that can clear obstacles. His eagle pal, meanwhile, can soar over great chasms that are too wide for Laval to get across. It's not particularly taxing stuff, and the game practically points out what you should be doing at certain points. But this is family-friendly fun pitched at a wide audience.

Equally as easygoing is the platforming and fighting. When you're not figuring out how to move forward in this colour-filled, tribalistic 3D world you're smacking enemies about with your sword in repetitive button-mashing combat. After foes are vanquished, you leap from one platform to another, wall jump, swing on vines, and tightrope walk across ravines.

But any element of danger is absent as it's impossible to fail a stage, and "dying" only loses you a few of the studs you picked up along the way. Everything about the gameplay - its level of challenge, its integration into the story, the actual process of executing moves - is simplistic.

The single biggest issue, though, is the unfamiliar and uninteresting narrative backdrop.

Without the fun of spotting all of the in-jokes from the various Indiana Jones movies, or wowing at the surprisingly decent recreation of Mordor, or chuckling at the what-if situation of Han Solo running about during the battle of Naboo, the familiar and largely unchanging gameplay is increasingly difficult to ignore.

Younger hearts, minds, and hands will probably enjoy the chance to play with the (I gather quite successful) Chima characters, but the older siblings or parents playing along with them will find the Saturday morning action cartoon voice-acting totally juvenile.

Which is, of course, totally at odds with the strength of the series: bringing together multiple generations of players in a shared love of a universe through the power of video games.

It's not a terrible game to actually play - it looks nice enough, it handles well, and the gameplay is fine - but the lack of an established world puts in sharp relief the unfortunate fact that the Lego series hasn't really changed in over eight years, and it's starting to become really obvious.

When you first start playing LEGO: Legends of Chima Laval’s Journey , you notice that the characters are actually all animals. These animals are divided into nine different tribes: Lion, Eagle, Gorilla, Wolf, Rhino, Crocodile, Bear, Raven, and Nomad. Each tribe has several different animals within it which you can collect as you play through the game or unlock them once you find their tokens. The key to completing the game is understanding the abilities of each type of animal.
