What is a guided tour in a mobile app?

Guided tours and tutorials are potent tools to help find themselves in the new app. It allows users to navigate complex interfaces, grasp core functionalities, and ultimately derive maximum value from their interactions with a product.

Guided tours are sometimes also called  walkthroughs  or  product tours . Designers can use guided tours of all types of digital products.

They serve as virtual mentors, accompanying users on their journey through digital experiences. Tutorials can use many different types of guidance, such as

• providing step-by-step guidance and explanations,
•  interactive demonstrations,
•  contextual tips.

Dedicated UI elements provide the instructions. These features shorten the learning curve. Moreover, they empower users to quickly become proficient in using new platforms.

What are the types of guided tours?

There are two main approaches to guide users through a digital product.

One of them is  static onboarding screens.  Those screens appear when users open the app for the first time. They often appear as a slide show – a quick presentation teaching the users how to use the app’s primary functions.

Onboarding screens appear right after opening the application for the very first time. They are a great way to welcome new users and show them the apps’ value proposition. For example, Slack, a widely used communication and collaboration platform, takes this approach. App walkthrough informs users, what the app does and what it is for.

Alternatively, it is an opportunity to demonstrate the app’s main features. The Notion, productivity and note-taking web application, presents its functions through screens with animations. A short animation showing a screen of the application demonstrates how users can organize their notes.

This method is handy when it describes actions that can be taken outside of the platform (like in the “Settings” of the device or actions done in a browser). For example, Evernote, a note-taking and task-management application, uses animation to explain how to save web content. 

№2: Use tooltips to present relevant information like Otter

Many modern applications use contextual instruction to demonstrate their functions. Pieces of information nudge users into exploring various features of the app. Tooltips are located near the button that serves the function the tooltip describes. 

For example Otter, a transcription software, guides users through the application and demonstrates how to use it using tooltips hovering over certain UI elements. Small arrows at one side of the tooltips draw the user’s attention to specific details. In some cases, Otter uses visual emphasis (like a darker background combined with a contrasting UI element) to further bring users’ attention to the element it describes.

№3: Use page indicator and navigation for multi-step instructions like Meetup

A guided tour takes the user through different screens of the app. Tutorials can be done via tooltips describing certain interface elements one after the other.

For its instructions, divided into separated stages, Evernote uses tooltips containing step indicators and buttons that lead from one step to another. They provide navigation through instructions and allow users to take an actual guided tour through the app.

Meetup, a social media platform for hosting and organizing in-person and virtual activities, takes navigation through tutorials even further by allowing users to go back to the previous instruction.

You need to have a children’s version of the tour.  They would learn so much about the history of the founding of our country and actually experience the history.

It was shocking to me to see how many Hollywood tours were being offered on the streets and their high costs.   I went with your $6 tour and found to be much more than I expected.

Excellent tour of Toulouse - not to be missed

For first time or return visitors, this is an excellent VoiceMap tour of the old city center area of Toulouse. Not only is Elyse an excellent historian/art historian, but she also gives wonderful context to the buildings, but also adds details and notes of places you might want to pause at or return to after the tour to take a closer look. Also don’t miss her conversations that you can access through the website and podcast called Join Us in France. There are many episodes that take place in Toulouse and great ideas for day trips in and around Toulouse.

Solid core but a little rough around the edges

I've followed a couple of tours and found their content to be good. The app itself is easy to use on the whole, but I wish you could open up the directions to the starting point in Google Maps as I don't have Apple Maps installed on my phone. Some indication of the cardinal direction to the starting point (if navigating without using a map) would also be appreciated (e.g. "30 yards to the north" rather than just "30 yards away"). And this is quite minor, but I don't need to receive the whole "You've paused the tour. To resume..." spiel every time I pause. Once when you first use the app or even once every day or tour would probably be sufficient to remind most people. Lastly, there seems to be a minor bug with the download status where it shows the last map segment (I think it was the map) as not having completely downloaded until I restart the app. That happened for both tours I downloaded.

Good app with potential to be excellent

Let me to start off by saying that functionality wise, this is a very exciting app. The audio synced to location works well and it’s an exciting way to explore a city on your own if you don’t wish to do an organized group walking tour. The tours I took through this app in Granada, Spain completely enhanced my trip to the city taking me to places I wouldn’t go on my own and giving me a ton of great information in the history of the city. That said, I found that the tours for other cities I used the app in (Seville and Madrid) were much less successful. This app runs on free lance content and it’s missing a lot of basic walking tours for popular tourist cities, and some of the tours it does offer for those cities are too niche to be appealing for most users. Hopefully this will change in the future if the app continues to attract creators but right now it’s missing some key content.

The most wonderful time of the golf season reaches its conclusion Sunday as the beauty of April surrounds Augusta National Golf Club. The 2024 Masters started as a star-studded affair with a loaded field featuring the best golfers in the world and Scottie Scheffler entering as the favorite. Scheffler held that same position entering Round 4 and has only increased his advantage as the Masters rolls ot a finish.

Scheffler is looking to become the 10th golfer in Masters history to win two green jackets in a three-year span, and given his level of play over the last two years, no one is doubting he can accomplish his goal. Should he do so, he would pick up a $3.6 million winner's check out of a record  2024 Masters prize money allotment -- a $20 million purse .

While five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods set a new record at Augusta National by making the weekend in his 24th consecutive playing of the tournament, he completely ejected on Saturday with his worst score in a major championship round. Tiger rebounded Sunday while playing his 100th round at Augusta National  but nevertheless signed for a 16 over, his worst score to par at a major and the second-worst round overall across his professional career. (At least he wasn't among the major stars who missed the cut .)

Nantz and Immelman link up with CBS Sports' incredible golf team, including on-course reporter Dottie Pepper and the legendary Verne Lundquist, who will be calling his final Masters.

What is the cut at the Masters?

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The 36-hole cut at the Masters is different than any other major championship. The 89-man field will be cut to the low 50 and ties after 36 holes is completed.

Thursday’s first round was suspended due to darkness after the start of play was delayed more than two hours by morning storms. The second round is expected to begin on schedule at 8 a.m., however.

The cut was first instituted in 1957, 23 years after the Masters began. The field was cut to the low 40 and ties from 1957-61, but the cut changed the next year with the institution of the 10-shot rule. From 1962-2012, the field was cut to the low 44 and ties, as well as anyone within 10 strokes of the leader.

Over the following seven years, the 36-hole cut was expanded to the low 50 and ties, as well as anyone within 10 strokes of the leader. The 10-shot rule was done away with in 2020, however, and now the low 50 and ties qualify for the final 36 holes at the Masters.
