Cape Town is the second most populated city in South Africa. It’s known for its landscapes, gardens, museums, cuisine and wine, but most importantly, it’s known for its wildlife. South Africa is a great place to see the Big Five: elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions and buffalo, as well as many species of snakes, birds and even eight different species of whales.

South Africa ms2

Referred to as “The Place of the Mountain” this Big 5 reserve also has five eco-systems. It has a moderate climate year round with rainfall in summer. The area is malaria-free and has an upper area with rock formations and grass plains, and a lower area of vegetation and wetlands.

South Africa ms3

Hanglip Mountain Lodge:

There’s never a dull moment at Hanglip Mountain Lodge! The luxury suites here are a great blend of romantic African and African baroque. There are ten luxury bedrooms, spa facilities, dining room and lounge, bar facilities, wine cellar, swimming pool, and the Hanglip fig tree outdoor venue. Every room has a private deck with views of the mountain and lounge areas with welcoming fireplaces. There are also game drives, bush walks, horseback safaris, helicopter flights, paintball; abseiling, and quad bikes.

Kruger National Park:

Imagine yourself exploring almost five million acres of protected game reserve spread out on the plains of South Africa. Here you can see the Big 5: elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards and rhinos running free out in their natural habitat. But wait! There are more than three hundred types of trees and five hundred species of birds to admire, too!

Destination Must-Do's

South Africa md1

Table Mountain:

This landmark is Africa’s most welcoming and photographed attraction and it’s no wonder why! Visitors enjoy riding to the top of the mountain by cable car where the most spectacular views can be found. The mountain is home to thousands of species of plants and flowers as well as the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. Definitely do not leave your camera behind for this trip!

South Africa md2

Featherbed Reserve (milk trees):

Located on the Knysna lagoon, there is much to see in the Featherbed Nature Reserve. You can explore the reserve riding on a 4x4 vehicle and trailer that takes visitors to key viewpoints on the reserve, or you can explore an ancient sea cave. Milk trees are extremely common here and they can grow up to six feet tall and have a spiny shrub-like look with small yellow flowers along the side.

BouldersBeach800x450

Boulders Beach:

Feel the sea breeze in your hair and the sand between your toes at Boulder’s Beach in False Bay. Aside from being a beautiful spot to lounge, swim, and picnic, it’s also the only place in the world where you can observe African Penguins in their natural habitat. A colony of these adorably furry endangered birds settled at the beach in 1982 and never left. You’ll probably want to stay a while too.

South Africa md4

Winelands Region:

South Africa has some really great wine. Visit the heart of the winelands region and take in the colorful mountains and vineyards that seem to go on for days. Don’t forget to taste some of that delicious stuff while you’re there!

Expert Advice

diana

As you prepare to explore South Africa, enjoy a casual dress style and be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. Lightweight cottons are suggested for shorts, slacks, tee shirts, as well as hats and one warm jacket and/or jumper.

South Africa e2

You’re in for a treat as you sample the truly unique flavors of Africa. The cuisine is sometimes called "rainbow cuisine," as it enjoys a variety of multicultural sources. Eating and drinking in South Africa is a culinary experience not to be missed.

South Africa e3

One of the best parts of traveling is coming back home with souvenirs that really reflect the place you’ve just been. In South Africa you’ll find a plethora of cultural products like carvings of animals made of soap stone, ebony, or other woods; wooden masks, bowls, jewelry and chess sets; jewelry made of precious stones like diamonds and semi-precious stones such as malachite, lapis and topaz; native art paintings, murals and sculptures; safari clothing; and tie-dyed prints of animals.

Iziko South African Museum, Cape Town

As South Africa’s favorite snack, you’ll find biltong throughout the country, from markets to restaurants. In South Africa, game refers to the animals of the bush like ostrich, kudu, impala and wildebeest.

South African biryani is a traditional dish originating from the Cape Malay culture. It’s made with lentils, meat like goat or chicken, vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes, and seasonings like garam masala, turmeric and chilli powder. It’s served with parboiled rice for a hearty meal.

Amasi is a popular dairy snack in South Africa, made from unpasteurised cow's milk stored in a calabash container to allow it to ferment. The thick liquid that remains tastes like plain yoghurt and is traditionally served in a clay pot, or poured over pap porridge.

South Africa food is wonderfully diverse and our Local Specialists will show you all the best places to taste the classics, from dried biltong to warm biryani.

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

The best time to visit South Africa depends on your preferences and the specific experiences you seek. South Africa has a diverse climate and a range of activities and attractions to offer throughout the year. Here's a breakdown of the seasons to help you plan your visit:

Summer (December to February): South Africa's summer months bring warm to hot temperatures and are ideal for beach activities, wildlife sightings, and outdoor adventures. It's a popular time to visit coastal areas, such as Cape Town and Durban, as well as the Kruger National Park and other game reserves. However, it's worth noting that some regions, particularly the coastal areas, can get crowded during the peak holiday season.

Autumn (March to May): Autumn in South Africa is characterized by mild temperatures and fewer crowds compared to the summer months. It's a great time to visit Cape Town, the Winelands, and the Garden Route, as the weather is still pleasant, and the landscapes are beautifully colored with autumn hues. The game viewing in the Kruger National Park and other reserves remains good during this time.

Winter (June to August): Winter in South Africa brings cooler temperatures, especially in the evenings and early mornings. It's an excellent time to visit game reserves, as the dry conditions make wildlife easier to spot. The Kruger National Park and other reserves in the northeastern parts of the country offer fantastic game viewing opportunities. The winter months are also a good time to explore cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg, as they experience fewer tourists.

Spring (September to November): Spring in South Africa brings mild temperatures, blooming flowers, and vibrant landscapes. It's a great time to visit the Cape Winelands, the Namaqualand region, and the famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town. In game reserves, the spring months offer pleasant weather and the chance to witness newborn animals and migratory bird arrivals.

Can I go on safari in South Africa?

Absolutely! South Africa is a fantastic destination for safari experiences, offering a diverse range of national parks and private game reserves that showcase the country's rich wildlife. The most widely known safari destination in South Africa is Kruger National Park, which is one of Africa's largest game reserves and is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) as well as numerous other species.

South Africa Tours & Travel Guide

South Africa Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Spanning nine provinces and eight UNESCO heritage sites, South Africa is a haven for adventure seekers, history buffs, naturalists, wine connoisseurs, and hikers, among many others.

The smallest province, Gauteng, is the most densely populated and hosts a powerhouse of attractions, including Johannesburg (the largest city) and the township of Soweto, site of the anti-apartheid 1976 uprisings. Johannesburg, which was built on the discovery of gold in 1886, hosts the Apartheid Museum, which documents South Africa’s freedom struggle. Just outside the city, the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site contains some of the most important paleo-anthropological discoveries in the world, with 14 excavated fossil sites and 200 unexplored caves.

What to see in Cape Town

Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities, sitting right off the Atlantic Ocean . For views of the city and the ocean, hike up Table Mountain . If hiking isn’t your thing, there is also a cable car that will take you to the top and back down.

Note, you’ll have to take the cable car back down Table Mountain, even if you hike. It’s too steep to hike back down. Another great options for unbeatable views is Signal Hill. Drive or walk to the top of the hill, to be met with views of the city, the ocean, and Table Mountain.

Watch the sunrise over Table Mountain, or the sun set over the Atlantic. You can even paraglide off of Signal Hill! This makes for a great alternative hike, because it isn’t as steep as Table Mountain.

There is plenty of outdoor activities in Cape Town , and opportunity to see wildlife and plants. Visit the Kirstenbosch Arboretum , sitting on the south side of the of the base of Table Mountain. Many travelers make this a single day trip, starting their morning at the Arboretum, and winding up the hiking trail to the top of Table Mountain.

The Kirstenbosch Arboretum is a botanical garden. Winning the “International Garden of the Year” award in 2015. Also at the garden is the treetop canopy walkway, known as the “Boomslang,” winning another title in 2015, the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa. Another must visit in Cape Town is the Cape of Good Hope and Boulder Beach, home of the “penguin beach.”

Check out the hundreds of penguins up close (the beach is closed off, but plenty of close viewing points) who like to chill out on the beach. You’ll even catch a few who like to wander over to the ocean, and be swept back by the waves onto the beach. Another great day trip is to Robben Island , where Nelson Mandela was held captive for nearly two decades before being released.

A must visit is the Cape Winelands . Visit the Stellenbosch/Franschoek region for some relaxing time outside the city. Take the wine tram and visit multiple wineries throughout the region. Enjoy the small town filled with shops and restaurants, while taking in the views.

You may get to spot some wildlife! Up in the higher hills of the wineland, there are signs saying beware of the baboons. It’s not uncommon to come across baboons in the road while in South Africa. Make sure to stay on the lookout! Another highly recommended area nearby is Camps Bay, a neighborhood in Cape Town.

Sitting on the beach, this luxurious area (think Beverly Hills) is home to great shopping, plenty of restaurants, the beach, and awesome views. Stroll through the neighborhood and admire the fancy cars and beautiful homes that overlook the ocean.

What to see in Johannesburg

Johannesburg is one of the most popular cities in South Africa. Johannesburg is also intense, so it’s important to be aware of what areas you should and shouldn’t visit. Not to say this should dissuade you from the city, because there are some awesome spots.

Just be careful of your surroundings. A popular neighborhood is the Maboneng Precinct , filled with food, markets, trendy shopping and art. Another great neighborhood is the Sandton neighborhood. South Africa has had a rough past, and one way to learn about this is by visiting Soweto .

You can also find the Mandela House in Soweto. A visit to the Apartheid Museum allows visitors to learn about the apartheid era through exhibits (warning, some are graphic). A great option for families is Gold Reef City, an amusement park based on the gold mining industry.

Johannesburg has plenty of markets, that depend on the day of the week. One popular market, the Market on Main , happens on Sundays. Saturday offers the Neighbourgoods Market in Braamfontein, filled with innovative foods. Food from across the globe is sold here, as well as different arts and souvenirs.

If you’re in Johannesburg, consider checking out the Administrative capital of South Africa, Pretoria. There is a botanical garden, a zoo, and numerous nature reserves.

The Western Cape

Many tours take in the Western Cape’s natural attractions, including Cape Point, home to scenic bays, beaches, rolling hills and valleys. Cape Point falls within the Cape Floral region, which harbors nearly 20 percent of Africa’s flora. Along the province's eastern coastline lies the picturesque Garden Route, which stretches from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. The perfect end to a Garden Route tour is a visit to the Addo Elephant National Park near Port Elizabeth.

South Africa’s main beach scene runs north and south of Durban on the east coast. To the west sprawls the Cultural and Natural World Heritage Site uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, home to the Drakensberg, South Africa's largest mountain range and more than 600 rock-art sites, with paintings by the San people who once roamed here. The province is the heart of the Zulu Kingdom.

Game Drives in South Africa

Kruger National Park  (Africa’s oldest) is one of the most well known safari destinations in the world. This is a great option for those looking to do a self-guided tour, since the paths are well-marked. Guided tours are also a smart option, because the guides know the park, and know what to look like. There are safari options for people who are on a budget, as well as those who are looking to splurge on this opportunity.

For wildlife spotting, including the Big Five, Kruger  is the place. Tours typically include morning and evening game drives and bush walks -- and often add on scenic drives along the waterfall-and-mountain-laden Panorama Route as well as deep Blyde River Canyon, one of the largest canyons on earth.

Pilanesburg National Park

Sitting about 2.5-3 hours northwest of Johannesburg is Pilanesberg National Park. This is a great option for those who want a closer safari than Kruger, since drive time is about half of what it would take to get to Kruger. S

tride Travel Writer Brooke stayed at Bakubung Bush Lodge in March 2019 when she went to South Africa. She raved about the gorgeous views, the incredible brunch and dinner buffets, and her overall stay. The lodge offers sunrise and sunset drives, when the animals are most active and you get away from the sweltering heat.

Groups are usually capped off at 16 per vehicle, making for an intimate experience. Many people go to Kruger park because it’s so well known, but Brooke highly recommends considering a visit to Pilanesberg.

The Garden Route

A spectacular way to see the diverse landscapes of South Africa is the Garden Route . The Garden Route stretches from the Storms River to Mossel Bay, and can continue up to Cape Town.

See the gorgeous landscapes of South Africa, including beaches and rivers, forests and mountains, and potential for wildlife sightings (Travelstride Writer, Brooke, encountered baboons on the road twice!). If you’re looking to add the Garden Route to your route, here are some places that are worth a visit:

1. Marine Big 5 Safari in Hermanus – a different type of safari, observe the “big 5” wildlife of the region: whale sharks, seals, penguins, dolphins and seabirds.

2. Wilderness National Park – great for hiking, canoeing, and visiting the beach. Where else can you see forest, mountains, and the oceans within 30 minutes of each other!? If you’re seeking adventure, consider tandem paragliding or canyoning in Wilderness.

3. Knysna Elephant Park – Homing and housing for orphaned African Elephants. An ethical way to see wildlife up close!

4. Plettenberg Bay is a great stop for whale and dolphin watching.

5. Another noteworthy visit – if you’re heading from George to Cape Town, take a detour to visit Cape L’aghulas . Take a photo where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, which is also the most southern point of the African continent!

10 Days Cape Town, Garden Route & Addo Package

We are a couple 60+. We took the 10 day package that included 6 days Cape to Addo Adventure and a few days in and around Capetown. The whole tour was great, the best part was our guide and driver Lourens. He is a great guy, very funny, great humor. A lot of knowledge and very experienced. He is also a very good driver and very safe. During the tour we stayed in Cape Xtreme accommodations in Sedgefield and met Liezel, a very nice lady that took great care of us. Over whole it was a very good tour and everything that was promised was delivered. Being an elderly couple, we have one warning, we paid quite a lot to get a private room with a bathroom inside. After staying in the different places, we think that it is highly overcharged and one should consider whether it is justified. Apart from that we highly recommend the company, the tour and the guide.

Benjamin is the best guide a traveler can have. He not only led the tour professionally with a lot of knowledge, but he also showed a lot of patience and understanding for everyone’s needs during the five days. By the end of the tour, we all felt like family and had a difficult time saying goodbye to each other. Bok Bus excited this trip so well from the accommodations, food and comfortable van. Thank you Benjamin and bravo for your excellent hospitality!

Our happy travellers rave about South Africa

A truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Just finished our South Africa and Victoria Falls tour. There are really no words to describe the wonderful experience we had on this tour. Our Guru Andrew, in-country guide Dube and the rest of the crew made this a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. When Approach says all-inclusive, they really mean it. We were looked after from home to back home. TRIP OF A LIFETIME!

Wow, is the first word that comes to mind

My husband and I took the South Africa trip in March, 2023. Wow, is the first word that comes to mind! We felt well looked after from our Approach Guru Diana and Deon our local guide. Everything from the breathtaking scenery, to the animals (we saw the big 5), to the people in our group and the South Africans, made it truly the trip of a lifetime! We would definitely use Approach to holiday again.

It seemed perfect. Boy was it ever!

My husband and I were searching for a way to celebrate our 50 th wedding anniversary when we came across Approach Tours South Africa & Victoria Falls tour it seemed perfect. Boy was it ever! When they say all-inclusive they really mean it, the only expenses we incurred were alcoholic drinks and souvenirs. The itinerary was packed full of history, culture, beautiful landscapes, and awe-inspiring safaris. Accommodations were so varied and fun from big city hotels to safari camp glamping. It was the attention to detail and the personal touches, that will keep us coming back to Approach. Having our group guru Caroline was such a blessing, she made sure everything ran smoothly from hotel changes to bus trips to border crossings and visas solving any hiccups before we even recognized them as an issue. But it was her ability to learn the wishes of every tour member to make each and every one of us experience an amazing trip. The party she organized for our anniversary day will stay with us until we take our last breaths! By the end of the tour we made 30 new friends and travel companions! We would say it was a trip of a lifetime but we plan many more trips with Approach so we now look forward to lots of epic trips in the future! Thank you Approach and dear travel companion Caroline!

No show, just reality

Just got back a few days ago from a 20-day tour to South Africa. It was very well designed and we did a lot of safaris as well as toured historical sites. I have special dietary needs and the guide made sure I was taken care of and food prepared to my needs. Our Guru Caroline came up with an unexpected stop to see how people live in small villages. No show, just reality. Very humbling. I would highly recommend Approach Tours to anyone looking to travel. They are prompt in answering questions and in assisting in your booking.

Vacation of a lifetime

My husband and I just got back from the Approach Tours’ 20-day South Africa & Victoria Falls tour. We want to thank Approach Tours for providing us with the vacation of a lifetime. Approach came through all the way…so much food, safaris galore, animal sightings galore, and so much cultural entertainment and education. And, all tipping included!!! Awesome trip! Thank you Approach Tours.

This was the first organized tour we had taken in years

Just returned from the South Africa & Victoria Falls Tour. It exceeded our expectations in every respect. We enjoyed 8 land as well as 2 water safaris. What an incredible experience to be so close to the wildlife in their environments. We learned about local culture. It was a wonderful opportunity to have a local guide in addition to our group guru. All of our accommodations were excellent as well as the meals. This was the first organized tour we had taken in years. We are so glad we did because we never would have seen all the amazing things we did on our own. We are already wondering where we will go next with Approach Tours.

This was our 3rd trip with Approach

Our trip to South Africa, with “Guru” Caroline Goheen, was superb. This was our 3 rd trip with Approach & we will book again. Fabulous service, truly “all-inclusive” (except alcoholic beverages), with all planning & bookings handled by Approach. We enjoyed new experiences every day, tours with knowledgeable local guides & exciting safaris. With 30 on this tour, all went smoothly. It was a trip of a lifetime. Thank you for your kind support & skilled leadership. ‘ Till we meet again!

An amazing trip of a lifetime

Just back from the South Africa trip. An amazing trip of a lifetime. My husband whispered to me after 1 of the safaris, that deciding to go on this trip was the 2 nd best decision I had made. Marrying him was the 1 st best decision.

Unforgettable!

We recently returned from our African adventure with Approach Tours. We had an intensive and exciting trip, learning from our local guide, Mark, and sharing many experiences with our travel mates. Our Guru was super, always participating, personable and thoughtful! From our home pickup, until our driver found us at the airport to deliver us safely home, we had a great time! We hope to travel again with Approach Tours and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to our friends. We felt we received excellent value for the tour price.

Our Group guru Deon made our whole trip!

Where to start?! There was no disappointments. Loved the Safaris and seeing all the animals. Loved the visits to learn about their cultures. Also loved seeing penguins, ostriches, etc… Drives to and from locations were very nice also.

We never thought South Africa was as we saw it

Certainly seeing the “Big Five” was mainly the reason for this trip, however, the sights and sounds observed made this trip even better. We never thought South Africa was as we saw it. Thinking of Africa, one doesn’t think of mountains, trees, flowers, etc. What a beautiful country we are so happy to have seen it.

We loved loved loved the Safaris!

We loved loved loved the Safaris! We never tired of seeing more of the “Big Five”, and the others were a bonus. Each Safari, land and water were quite different. We were a bit nervous about sleeping in tents, but loved the “glamping”.

Always a step ahead

The time spent at Shiduli Lodge & Karongwe was time well spent. The safaris were breathtaking, and we went on a great Chobe River cruise too. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and always a step ahead. The best part was everything being organized, including meals and tipping. Overall, a wonderful experience with a great group of travellers. Highly recommend it!

Excellent guide!

Excellent guide! With knowledge of history, geography, and wonderful organizational skills! The safari and animal experiences in Chobe National park were amazing. Surprise celebratory drinks provided by Joe were a nice gift. The farewell supper was very well planned.

Overall I loved this trip!

Safaris were awesome. Private game reserves & Chobe National Park were spectacular. Loved the diversity of the landscapes all the way from Cape Town to Victoria Falls. Ocean, rivers, mountains, vineyards, canyons & more. Accommodations were exceptional. Overall I loved this trip!

Very, very pleased

Very appreciative of “all-inclusive” tour – 3 meals a day, drive to/from airport, tipping, etc. – less to be concerned about. Safaris – massive herd of elephants on return from Botswana. Bourke’s Luck Potholes. African Sunset. River cruise (safari) in Botswana very pleasant way to spend a very warm afternoon. Happy with # of people on tour. Thank you for extra surprises during tour (candles, drinks, treats)! On whole, very very pleased.

Spectacular Adventure

Just came back from a spectacular adventure in South Africa, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and Botswana. Best cost for a single supplement. All-inclusive… means all our needs and wants were taken care of…Guru Kosta and Travel Guide Mark were wonderful and professional at all times. I felt very safe and confident as our Drivers were very experienced. I highly recommend Approach Tours.

South Africa Tours & Vacations

Silhouette of African safari scene with giraffe, elephant, rhino, and vehicle at sunset

The whole ‘country of contrasts’ thing has become a bit of a cliché

But what else do you call a place where (in a three-week period) you could happily slalom between penguins waddling on the Cape and lions stalking the bushveld, cinematic coastal switchbacks and burnt Kalahari sand, the oldest wine industry outside   Europe   and cutting-edge fusion cuisine? ‘Contrast’, doesn’t really do South Africa justice. The beauty of a South Africa tour (besides the peace of mind that comes with an expert local guide) is being able to fit so much   Africa   into so little time. From the Stellenbosch winelands to Kruger , Blyde River and beyond, this is a place where you can take your   safari   with a side of espresso.

Best time to visit south africa.

South Africa is an excellent year-round destination. Winters are mild, dry and good for wildlife viewing. Summers can get very hot and humid, but are a great time for visiting beaches and festivals. Spring is a great time for viewing wildflowers in the Northern and Western Cape provinces, and very little rain falls anywhere in autumn but the days are warm and the nights cool. Overall, there’s always a good time to head to South Africa.

Culture and customs

South Africa’s culture is one of the most diverse in the world. From indigenous tribes like the Zulu, San Bushmen and Xhosa to the Afrikaners of Dutch heritage, and immigrants of British descent, visitors will be able to experience a magnificent melting pot of customs and traditions. The significant Indian and Jewish populations also add to the ethnic mix. From the proud, beaded Zulu warriors that have inhabited the land for centuries to newly arrived immigrants from   Europe   and   Asia , South Africa’s culture has been shaped by millions of people.

The cuisine is generally a combination of Indian, Dutch, English and tribal flavours and techniques, while dress can range from modern fashion in the big cities to simple traditional, tribal dress in the bush. Although South Africa has made significant inroads towards peace and reconciliation since the end of apartheid, racial tensions are sometimes evident and it is generally best not to contribute to this in any way. Overall, most travellers will find South Africans to be welcoming, appreciative of your visit and ready to share their homeland and stories.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Foods to try in South Africa

South Africa is fast becoming one of the most interesting wine producing regions in the world. Quality has risen steeply in the past decade so if you’re visiting the Stellenbosch Wine Region, be sure to sample some fine reds, which are world-class.

With such easy access to the Indian Ocean and Southern Atlantic, South Africa boasts some of the best seafood dining experiences you’ll ever have. From an indulgent oyster platter at a Cape Town restaurant to a spicy seafood curry in Durban, the seafood here is fresh, cheap and flavoursome.

Biltong tends to divide people. Some find this preserved, spiced meat snack impossible to refuse and others simply can’t stomach it. Either way, it’s extremely popular and readily available in markets, supermarkets and shops throughout South Africa.

4. Boerewors

Another one for the meat-lovers, this coiled, spicy sausage is a South African delicacy best done on the barbecue. Flavoured with coriander, cloves and nutmeg, this is a meat born from South African and Dutch traditions.

Geography and environment

South Africa showcases one of the most diverse and stunning natural environments in the world. Visitors are able to soak up golden rays on sun-drenched beaches, journey through acre upon acre of dry savannah, admire lush, green meadows, walk through tropical forest and stop to take in views of wide, ancient canyons. It’s also possible to stroll the streets of an urban city one day and meander along a dirt track passing small farms and villages the next. South Africa truly is a land of contrasts and this begins with the landscapes and environment.

Located on the tip of Southern Africa, South Africa shares land borders with Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland. It also shares a long stretch of coastline with the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans. The topography of the land changes remarkably around the country, from the lofty plateaux of the inland region to the low-lying coast and mountainous ranges of the Cape. This variance in topography makes South Africa rich in many species of flora and fauna, something that attracts many tourists and travellers from all over the world.

History and government

Early history.

The land of South Africa has been inhabited for centuries by tribes hailing from different areas of the African continent, including the San and Bantu people. Most tribes relied on hunting and gathering, but gradually were introduced to agriculture and animal husbandry over the years. From around 1200 AD, the tribal people of South Africa started to become influenced by outsiders, including Muslim traders, the Portuguese and the Dutch, who established a settlement in the mid 1600s.

The Dutch continued to dominate the country until the 1800s, when the British became interested in the Cape Colony. During this time, the native population had become increasingly dissatisfied with being marginalised and treated poorly by their European colonisers. Many native people were used as slaves on plantations and were treated brutally by their ‘employers’ and many resented losing their land, culture and traditional way of life. Further to this, the Dutch descendants (known as Boers) didn’t appreciate the arrival of the British in a territory they had inhabited for years before their arrival. This frustration and anger regularly resulted in confrontation and armed conflict between the British, Boers and Zulus, culminating in a series of wars – most notably the Boer Wars.

Recent history

More recently, South Africa has managed to overcome the Apartheid era, a time where discrimination of black people was legalised. Until 1994, black people were unable to legally own land or vote in elections. Further to this, education, healthcare, beaches and public places like cinemas were segregated. During this time, South Africa was ruled and controlled by the white minority, much to the dissatisfaction of the black population and ultimately, the world. After much international pressure and many attempts at reform, the Apartheid era was finally ended in 1994, with Nelson Mandela stepping up to lead the nation as President. Due to this challenging history, modern day South Africa has many social issues to work on and resolve, but many of its people are filled with hope and optimism. In 2010, South Africa successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup, much to the delight of its citizens and the world.
