New for 2025

We're one of the longest running uk school ski travel companies, so we know exactly what your group needs.

Ski Gower was established in the late 1950's by Kilby Edwards, and the model that he established then is still in successful operation now.  With his own group of school students, Kilby saw the rapid progress they made in their skiing ability, in comparison to that of the students being taught by the local ski school.  This was wholly due to there being no language barrier and by his team providing all day instruction to the students.

Our team of British ski instructors is dedicated to your school group and provides all day instruction, which normally equates to well over 30 hours of instruction in one week.

The personal experience in dealing with Ski Gower has not changed either; we aim to keep our planning and preparation simple and efficient and support our Customers as much as possible in the run up to their tour.

What our Ski Gower Customers say

"Thanks for organising such great school ski trips. The staff and children had a truly memorable trip to Switzerland. Please pass on my thanks to the ski instructors, they built a great rapport and the children all learnt a great deal. Confidence in all the kids was brimming by the end of the week."

Your Requirements

  • When? February half term Easter Term-time
  • Most Important? High resort Large mileage pistes Doorstep Skiing All of the above!
  • Where? Best Value! Italy France Austria USA Andorra
  • Our school ski trips are based upon our own experiences as fellow teachers.
  • Our professional teacher risk assessments and years of experience allow us to advise and cater for any school, unique as you are.
  • We are a family business so we guarantee to offer your school the personal service you won't find elsewhere. Despite others' promises, this is never possible in large multi-staffed companies.
  • We book you into a hotel from the outset. We don't double-book and we carry through with our promises.

321ski are proud to be considered expert school ski trip specialists for Italy. We are great fans of the characteristically Italian high quality skiing and extended snow sure seasons.

321ski specialises in the most snow sure areas of Italy and the majority of our resorts and hotels offer doorstep or 'ski in and ski out'. With this in mind our Italian programme provides excellent safeguarding options.

We get consistent excellent feedback from our 321ski school groups returning from Italy, and many of our schools re-book within weeks to return.

321ski are delighted to offer schools the highest Austrian resorts which provide a diverse range of skiing - both on glaciers and below the treeline.

With relatively short transfer times, Austria remains a popular destination for many of our 321ski loyal schools. Austria also provides an array of evening activites taht are suitable for all pupils' age ranges.

Our hotels are all in traditional Austrian mountain villages that are close to (if not on...) the slopes. Christmas markets and our established Austrian evening activities packages will further enrich your Austrian school ski trip.

321ski provides schools with both the high profile ski resorts, as well as the less well known. With the majority of our 321ski French resorts being purpose built you can be sure of a high quality ski and evening activity experience.

All of our French resorts offer skiing at February and Easter and most of our hotels are doorstep to the piste. 321ski have established solid relationships with our French hoteliers in resort, and we are proud to be able to provide bespoke packages to suit any size or budget.

321ski are a fan of the good value and high ski resorts that Andorra offers. Huge investment over the last 5 years have resulted in modern and fast lifts interlinking resorts.

The largest of these resorts is 93km of Vallnord. With Andorra being a tax haven the area is also great value for money.

A great record of sunshine couples with a long ski season for Andorra. Enjoy the local Catalan culture and scenery by choosing Andorra.

Spain now offers some of the most modern ski resorts in some of the highest ski areas in Europe. Often overlooked, Spain boasts long ski seasons as well as the best European weather for our 321ski school groups.

With 321ski's most extensive Spanish resort being over 130km in length and 2500m in height, our schools return with consistent excellent feedback about the quality of snow and extent of skiing.

With 'ski in and ski out', our Spanish resorts continue to be high up on the list of those trip leaders 'in the know', and of course the other benefit of the Spanish resorts being under-touristed is that the pistes are less busy than elsewhere. That means the pistes are safer. So what's not to like...?

321ski are proud to be working closely with both East and West Coast ski resorts in USA. Although it obviously takes longer for our 321ski groups to travel to resort, the US resorts do hold advantages over Europe.

The English ski instructors, potential to do a stop-over en route and the older drinking laws makes the US an attractive proposition. No language barriers with modern, purpose built hotels and resorts makes the US a real winner.

All of 321ski's US resorts are chosen to provide that little bit different to the next.

321ski is proud of our Canadian affiliations. The only school ski trip company to have permanent staff based in Vancouver, our Canadian programme is both extensive and market leading. This makes us the Canadian experts.

Guaranteed snowfall, dramatic scenery and no language barriers makes Canada an exclusive choice. Being the home of the Winter Olympics 2010, heavy ski investment has transformed the lifts and infrastructore for many of the Canadian resorts.

The 321ski schools usually combine the trip with a night in Vancouver and, with permanent staff locally, we couldn't think of anything better!

School ski trip planning

Alison’s top tips for first time leaders

Alison Wareham, our Head of Ski & Sustainability, offers some sound advice for first time ski leaders.

Organising residential school ski trips is an exciting opportunity but it’s also daunting. With a good tour operator behind you, however, it can be a very rewarding and enjoyable experience!

Alison’s tips

I find it’s useful to break down the organising of your ski trip into four stages:.

The best advice I can offer is - start early; preferably a year in advance or at least a minimum of 6 months. Get support from your SMT or EVC. Send a letter out to gauge the level of interest from students, making sure the dates you’ve planned – December, February half- term or Easter - fit in with exams. Use assemblies to spread the word.

Top Tip 1 : Consider skiing at Easter for a better choice of accommodation, better prices and still great snow!

Things to consider when choosing a tour operator:

  • Get a recommendation from a colleague.
  • Check they offer a programme that matches your requirements.
  • Are their pick-up times and points convenient?
  • Is their accommodationsuitable for your group?
  • Do they provide value for money?
  • Check their surcharge policy.
  • Are they appropriately licensed with ATOL and Abta.

Top Tip 2: Cheapest is not necessarily the best!

European ski houses, resorts, ski schools, ski instructors, ski reps, après-ski activities and modes of transport all vary enormously depending on your group and your needs. A good tour operator will be able to advise and support you on all these aspects of your trip.

Ski trips aren’t cheap. You could consider doing some fundraising. Talk to your EVC, the parent-teacher association and other staff about how you can subsidise the cost of the school trip and how to fundraise. Meanwhile here are some ideas:

  •  Use specific school funds to subsidise pupil premium students.
  • Ask the PTA to organise an event or make a contribution.
  • Encourage students to fundraise with sponsored events, cake sales, bag packing, carwashes etc.

Once you have confirmed your trip, the fun begins! Your tour operator will get in touch to find out more details about your evening activity programme, rooming and dietary requirements , ferry times, transfers and timings. A good operator will have a client portal, which will make any updates and revisions to your tour a lot easier to make.

Unfortunately there’s no avoiding lists! The tour operator will need to know: the height, weight and shoe size of every person travelling so they can pre-request ski equipment; the ages, dates of birth and gender, and (if you are flying) passport details; any medical conditions, allergies or other dietary requirements; any religious-based requirements, such as halal or kosher diets.

Health and Safety: Talk to your school’s Health & Safety Officer or EVC about the trip early on. Read and fill in any of your school’s risk assessment and safety management forms. Check the operator’s own Safety Management document/s.

Top Tip 3: Consider going on a pre-tour inspection visit. These are very helpful for carrying out your own risk assessment; they give you confidence about the resort and a chance to get some skiing in too!

A ski trip is a physically demanding experience. If some of your students aren’t very physically active, you may want to consider:

  • A course of ski-fit lessons, either in normal PE or as an after-school club; and/or
  • A visit to a snow dome or dry ski slope.

Top Tip 4 : Give your students a kit list as soon as they book so they have enough time to get everything they need.

SCO Course : Why not sign up to a one-day Snowsports Course Organiser course? This is a Snowsports England accredited course, designed to give school ski trip leaders the necessary skills to choose an appropriate provider and organise a successful trip.

This is where the adventure starts!

While you’re away, your tour operator should supply you with a 24-hour emergency phone number and some operators will also be out in resort to offer help and support in person if needed. Your bi-lingual tour manager or rep – if you have one – will also swing into action and be on hand throughout the week to ensure all goes smoothly on and off the slopes.

Top Tip 5: To reduce the risk of accident or injuries, always follow your ski school’s guidance on where to ski, and when to start or finish.

Top Tip 6:   Have a duty rota and “chain of command” with a member of staff “on duty” on the slopes, taking it in turns to allow staff to free ski.

It’s also a good idea to make sure that all students have a slip of paper with their name, school name and accommodation as well as a staff contact number in a jacket pocket.

The ski school

A good operator will ensure that your ski school offers the highest quality tuition. They should be accredited by their national ski school and follow a strict regulatory code. It is important your students listen carefully and follow instructions for their own safety. But on the other hand, the instructors will do their utmost to ensure your students have a really fun time: the ski race and the presentation at the end of the week will show how much they will have learnt.

Quick guide to slopes classification

1. Green – for beginners. 2. Blue for cruisers and improvers. 3. Red – intermediate with some challenges. 4. Black – for most advanced skiers. Can be ungroomed runs leading to moguls and icy patches depending on conditions.

NB. Piste conditions change during the day; what was a cruising blue run mid morning could be more like a hard red by 4pm. Like wise a quiet red at the end of the day may be a lot easier than an icy and crowded blue.

We highly recommend that you don’t take students off-piste –save it for your personal holiday!

For more information on safety on the slopes visit: www.skiclub.co.uk/infoandadvice .

A good tour operator will love to hear all about the highs and lows of your school ski trip , and follow any social media activity you might have made while in resort. They will pass on all your comments, both positive and negative to their suppliers and use your evaluations to continually improve their service.

Top Tip 7: Consider booking for the following year as soon as you’re back:  ski resorts and accommodation often get booked up far in advance.

The Next Generation in School Ski Travel

The benefits of a School Ski Trip?

british school ski trip

School ski trips are no longer the preserve of the very wealthy. Nor are they seen these days as just a holiday for students. For many, they form a key part of the PE curriculum and with the massive improvements to flight times and local airports; easier access to ski resorts across Europe has opened up a whole world of possibilities for this growing market.

Unlike some sports on the National Curriculum, skiing is an ideal activity for any student group. It’s not a difficult sport to learn and it relies on technique rather than strength or fitness.

If you don’t have time to read our whole page, click the link below to read a short summary about what we believe are the biggest benefits of a school ski holiday,

“Skiing is a great leveller,” says David Adkins, Director of Communications at Dulwich College Prep School in South East London. He has taken a large party of boys to Obertauern, the highest ski resort in Austria, for the last four years. “It’s not just the sporty rugby players who do well. Very often, boys who are new to the sport, who may struggle with the traditional P.E. curriculum, discover a talent for skiing.”

As it is an individual rather than team sport and has no intrinsic element of competition, many students who have previously shown little or no enthusiasm in sports often discover an unexpected aptitude and skill for skiing.

british school ski trip

“Skiing demands completely unique physical skills,” says Tanya Drew, Head of Secondary at Dubai British School, “so often even students who struggle with more traditional sports do well on the slopes. “

The benefits of school ski trips are more than just physical, as Adkins explains.

“I really do see my students change and grow up over the week we spend in Austria. Having to take responsibility for themselves even if it’s only for a short time is very good for them.

“Last year we took 47 boys and there was an excellent pupil to instructor ratio, especially for the seven beginners who all quickly improved enough to be able to ski with the rest of us directly from our hotel to the meeting point up on the slopes.

“Everyday the boys had five hours of instruction – we had five ski instructors dedicated to our group. After our ski lessons, there is plenty of time for other activities. Every day we had a hot lunch in a mountain side restaurant. Again the owner is very friendly and there’s a great atmosphere.

“On other days we went snow shoeing in the woods and tried some bum boarding, where you sit on what is essentially a tiny drinks tray, holding on to a little handle. Because our trip coincided with Obertauern ‘S Winter Festival, we went to a ski show and watched some amazing synchronised skiing, jumping and other feats. In the evenings, we took the boys bowling, had a very funny Karaoke night, did some flood-lit skiing and organised a quiz night. There’s really very little time for boys to miss home. They’re busy and active all the time.

“Every year we’re out in resort making sure all our students get the most out of their ski trip,” “It’s a real pleasure to see even the beginners after just a few days high up on in the mountain. They’re having the time of their life and, almost subliminally learning a life skill. Skiing is like riding a bike, it’s best to learn early and once you’ve cracked it, the skill will stay with you for the rest of your life.”

Adkins says he also sees his boys grow on their trip: “It’s great to watch the boys develop over the week. They have to work as a small team, living and getting on with the others.  I especially like it when a boy who is usually quiet at school, really comes out of himself and is bubbly and loud out on the slopes.”

british school ski trip

“I’ve also always found my ski trips a great leveller,” says Drew. “Students of all ages and abilities develop a great sense of camaraderie and team spirit. I’ve seen many students with low self esteem grow in confidence over the week. This is true of all school trips, but for me, no other school excursion can provide such a unique experience.”

Why Do Schools Go On Ski Trips?

School ski trips offer many benefits for students, but are there any benefits for schools.

british school ski trip

School ski trips have become a rite of passage for many British schoolkids, but at a time when the cost of living is putting added pressures on families’ and schools’ budgets, is it time to ditch the annual school ski trip?

The answer is a resounding no. We’ve already talked about the many incredible benefits for the students  themselves, but there are also some fantastic benefits for schools in running school ski trips.

Here are just a few compelling reasons why your school should run a school ski trip:

It can help the school to attract the best teachers and students

Offering a regular school ski trip can set a school apart from its local competition when it comes to attracting students or teachers.

For many students, the opportunity to go on a school ski trip may be the only chance they will have to go skiing during their childhood. That’s because, although school ski trips are by no means cheap, they are significantly less expensive than taking the whole family.

For those students, that school ski trip could really be life-changing, as well as being a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It could introduce them to a new passion or hobby that they enjoy for the rest of their lives. Or it could spark an interest in travel and exploring new cultures.

For more advanced skiers, this is an exciting opportunity to share their passion with their friends.

For teachers, the opportunity to lead or accompany a school ski trip is a great opportunity for their career progression and personal development. It’s also a fun perk of the job and a great opportunity to escape the classroom with their students!

It shows that the school takes the good health and mental wellbeing of their students seriously

british school ski trip

A school ski trip will show your students that there are lots of sports and activities available to them outside of those typically offered at school. They may develop a passion for snow sports, or they may be inspired to explore other activities. But, once they’ve found a sport or activity that suits them, they’re more likely to carry that interest into adulthood – therefore living healthier, more active lives.

The opportunity to get into the mountains and closer to nature is also fantastic for children’s wellbeing. The mountain environment has, through several studies, been linked to positive benefits for health and wellbeing, including stress reduction, improved cardiovascular health, resistance to obesity and a strengthened immune system.

It shows that the school takes the opportunity for personal development seriously

british school ski trip

School ski trips offer students plenty of  opportunity for personal development, as we’ve previously covered in our guide to the benefits of skiing. These trips encourage children to try something new and to explore and develop new skills which can help them to become more independent, responsible and resilient.

School ski trips are exciting and challenging experiences that give students the chance to develop their sense of responsibility and leadership. They intrinsically encourage students to take risks and develop resilience when faced with unexpected challenges. And they encourage students to develop their teamwork, communication and problem solving skills.

School ski trips can also be a fantastic opportunity for the personal development of teachers too. They offer a valuable opportunity to develop planning and management skills. And, if they choose a reputable school ski tour operator like Halsbury Ski, they can do so with minimum stress, as they’ll be supported every step of the way.

It can improve the learning environment

british school ski trip

School ski trips offer the opportunity for students and teachers to get to know each other outside of the classroom and to see each other as human beings.

They will develop better relationships through their shared experiences and this will lead to greater mutual respect, which then translates into an improved learning environment once they’re back in the classroom.

It can be a very accessible trip

School ski trips can be very accessible for students, with adaptive skiing now available in many resorts. Many hotels also offer wheelchair accessible rooms and accessible coaches can also be arranged with enough advance warning.

It’s the ultimate cross-curricular school trip and offers a fantastic opportunity for GCSE PE students

british school ski trip

Your school ski trip will offer your students the opportunity to practice their language skills and see geography in action in a spectacular mountain environment.

There will even be a bit of maths involved, as they manage their spending money and perhaps even get to grips with exchange rates.

So, even though school ski trips have the reputation of being ‘just a bit of a jolly’, they actually offer many cross-curricular benefits.

And if you have any GCSE or A Level PE students, they can even ski as the non-exam assessment component – check out our [guide](https://www.halsbury.com/ski/resources/can-skiing-work-as-part-of-gcse-and-a-level-pe-assessment) for further information on this.

It’s a really rewarding experience for all involved

british school ski trip

So, with all of these benefits, it’s clear that the school ski trip is more than just a fun event in the school calendar – it’s actually a really rewarding experience for all involved.

Students will learn new skills and both they and teachers will have the opportunity for personal development. Students could also be introduced to a new sport that encourages them to live a healthy lifestyle. They’ll also have plenty of opportunity for cross-curricular learning, from languages to geography and even maths. And the experience will also lead to a better learning environment once everyone gets back to school.

The fact that your school prioritises all of this by offering their students the chance to go on a school ski trip will help to raise the profile and reputation of your school and could help to attract the best students and teachers.

Former Great British skier on the benefits of getting youngsters on the slopes

2022-12-27T07:10:00+00:00

We spoke to Nick Robinson, a former member of the Great Britain Ski Team, about why it’s important for children to spend time outside the classroom, how being on the ski slopes can help build confidence and his own school trip memories.

Nick Robinson, former member of the British Ski Team

Nick Robinson.

Tell us a little bit about your school life

It was very much a challenge, given I was away so much of the year. It meant fitting back in and that got more difficult the older I got. Thankfully, I performed well in all classes, apart from in English where my dyslexia had a big impact. Being in the higher sets, I sometimes stuck out as the naughty one, but I was never in too much trouble that it impacted my studies.

How did you juggle school with your aspirations of competing at the highest level of skiing?

As I got older and earnt my place on the British Ski Team, I had to spend more time abroad. Thankfully, my teachers were incredibly supportive and went out of their way to provide me with the work I would be missing when travelling. I attended the British Ski Academy in Chamonix most winters, where there were teachers on site to help us across a range of subjects. My skiing journey started aged 8. My dad was an ex-ski racer, and after he had taken my brother up for his first lesson, I begged to join them.

Why do you think it’s important that children spend time outside the classroom on educational visits?

I am a big advocate of creating plenty of opportunities for children to experience different cultures and spend time in the outdoors. If everyone could see what children learn during their first week skiing, compared to a standard school week, I don’t think anyone would be against a child missing a week of classroom work. By the end of the week, their confidence levels are sky high, they have learned a new sport, made new friends, and spent the whole week outside exercising. Skiing really does have so many benefits for children.

“If everyone could see what children learn during their first week skiing, compared to a standard school week, I don’t think anyone would be against a child missing a week of classroom work.”

Are there any more benefits for a school ski trip?

I think it really is a unique experience, they learn so much about the mountains through the course of a week, gain confidence and generally have a great time. I often think that as adults we don’t spend enough time “playing”. When we go skiing it is one of the few times each year we actually get to play, in a non-competitive way, so giving that gift to a child means that when they are older, they will enjoy it even more.

Children skiing

Nick says that a school ski trip gives children confidence.

How can teachers keep costs as low as possible when organising a ski trip?

The biggest thing that can be done would be to avoid going during school holidays. Prices will be at least 50% cheaper, if not more. Picking a destination that is reachable by coach also helps and finding a smaller, less known resort is likely to result in lower lesson and rental costs. You can also head to a UK-based slope, which I would also recommend doing before their first trip, but it cannot fully replace being on the mountain for a week.

Do you think any of the lessons you learnt while outside the classroom contributed to your success?

I learned a huge amount whilst travelling as a ski racer. I think I use more of these skills day-to-day than those I learned in the classroom. The biggest lesson I have taken from skiing is that it is okay to fail and make mistakes. This has given me a real gung-ho approach to work and life, where anything feels possible, and if you fail trying, it’s okay – at least you tried.

Do you recall any school trips or overnight visits from your time at school?

I remember a couple of trips, one was to an outdoor activities centre which was great, and the other to La Rochelle in France. I think school trips are important for children to develop and I have some fond memories from the trips I attended at a young age.

Nick went from the British Ski Team to becoming a money broker in the city. After deciding to follow his passion he returned to the ski industry to create Maison Sport, an independent ski and snowboard instructor provider, specialising in ski instructor-led breaks.
