Cruice control does not work on 1999 dodge durango

What else can I say, I bought this car used and now I find out the cruice controld does not light up or work, I just had the transmission rebuilt should that have been fixed as well? I will try to call the car guys this saturday…that will be fun

Since you aren’t even getting a power light indication I suggest you check the fuse for the CC system. You should think about getting a service manual for the vehicle also if you can work on problems like this yourself. It will save you time and money over the years.

Check to make sure all the brake lights work. If there’s a burned out filiment in one of the brake light bulbs the cruise control won’t operate. Also try lifting up on the brake pedal with your toe when trying to engage the cruise control. If works when doing this, suspect the brake light/interlock/cruise disengagement switch to be out of adjustment or defective.

the cruice green light will come on when I am in park, but very briefly, never when driving. I will check my brake lights. Since the light does come on I can eliminate the fuse, or should I still check. Thank you for your help. I am between this 1999 dodge durango and a 2001 beetle, at this point I am not sure which car will give me the least problems.

any advice?

My first suggestion is to go to dodge.com enter your VIN# and find out if your vehicle is covered under the clock spring recall. The clock spring is the gateway for power from the column to those fancy switches on the steering wheel and the airbag. ~Michael

thank you Michael I will try that today. Betty

Sounds to me like you still have a vacuum problem somewhere.

some one swapped out the computer at some point before i got it and that computer didnt have the driver for cruise control. got a re-manufactured computer for 250 and works great.

Glad you got it fixed.

cruise control stopped working..

  • Add to quote

checked all the fuses and its not that. can it be the switch itself inside the steering wheel? anyone help plz and thanks 2000 Durango R/T 5.9

Assuming the speedo operates smoothly. Does the cruise control light come on when you turn it on? Pretty much everything else is monitored by the OBD and requires the system to be interrogated. The only other thing could be a bad vacuum line to the servo. Sorry couldn't help more but so much of it is digital that it may require more equipment to diagnose.

speedo works great and when pushing the cc power button in the steering wheel the light comes on under the odometer but it wont set when I press the set button. Also my intermittent wipers are not working either so are these 2 issues related? please help thanks

HAve you done any engine/ TB work?

They could be related in the form of and electrical connector in the steering column. It could be a switch in the steering wheel. There is also an item in the steering column called a clock spring, this unit allows the steering wheel to be turned and keep the electrical connections from the wheel it could have failed. There is a check valve in the line from the cruise control servo to the source of vacuume. The rear wheel speed sensor is the source of speed input for the system. Everything for the cruise runs thru the power train control module. Also working around the steering column the air bags should be disarmed not sure of the procedure for the 2000. The only way to have the pcm interrogated is with a diagnostic computer and it should be able to pinpoint the fault. Even a stop light switch will throw the system out of wack. There are electric solenoids that the PCM operates to control the cruise. Again this is from a manual for a 1999. I don't know if this helps but honestly by the time you replace one or two parts that don't fix it you could cover the cost of having it plugged in and checked. I would personally look over what I could see and look for obvious things. Cable from servo disconnected at throttle body, vacuume hoses unhooked things like that and if you find nothing take it to a parts store to see what their diagnostics show, this could be hit or miss depending on the person doing it but a lot of them do it for free and it may give you something.

I dont have a "check engine light" on so can I still run a OBD II on it? I have the scanner to scan it. I will check everything you said. I printed off your info updates to come thanks hey where are u at in Michigan?

Not all codes lock into and set off the check engine light. Battle Creek, Bedford area. Wasn't trying to be smart just some things get more involved with these problems than people wanna deal with or have tooling to deal with.

The check engine light will only come on if there is an emissions related problem. The cruise control system can't be accessed through a standard OBDII scan tool. You would need a DRBIII to access the cruise control system. The DRBIII has a screen for inputs and outputs that shows all of the switch states. This allows you to narrow down the problem by pushing the various buttons to see if the signal is getting through, it also makes it possible to easily check of the brake switch is sending the right signal. As mentioned above, replacing the clock spring might make sense. If you want, you could get a copy of the wiring diagram and do some tests with a meter to check if the right signals are getting through. As stated

go to the back of your D and make sure that your brake lights arent lit up. it wont rule out your brake switch. its a switch that turns on your lights when you hit the brakes. it has a cylinder on it that when pressure is released from it, the lights kick on. It also deactivates your cruise control. the reason why i say to check and see if your lights are lit up, is because it will definately be that switch. if they arent, you can still replace it to see if it helps. its relatively cheap.

Cruise control turns on, but won't actually engage at set speed

  • Add to quote

The light in the dash comes on indicating the cruise control has been turned on. Once I hit the set button and let off the gas pedal, the car just starts slowing down. I checked the plunger at the brake pedal and it looks ok to me, I tried recalibrating it like I found on here to do... but it still doesn't work. Any ideas? (2002 300M)

same yr car. same problem...

99 dodge durango cruise control

check the vacuum lines on the servo if you have a vacuum leak there will be no cruise or maybe even the diaphragm in the servo itself has a leak you may have to change the servo but I'd check the vacuum lines 1st

Where under the hood is this located?

I was just looking near there the other day. I'll check it closely tonight. Thanks a bunch.

All lines look good, they're connected and no cracks or holes. Could I do a short quick test of taping the plunger button down and see if the cruise engages?

not sure mate soon as I can find where I downloaded the fsm to I'll give you some more things to look at

Yeah, I don't think it's too serious. I want to take this puppy out on a nice highway drive when I have to go out of town. She'll be sitting at home if I don't get the cruise fixed.

99 dodge durango cruise control

Have you checked to see if the Cruise Control cable is actually connected to the throttle body?

From what I can tell in that tight space yup. Everything looks connected. Ziptrix: thanks bud! I checked that t-connection first and it all looked good. I'm thinking something is up with that pedal switch.

2000 FSM 2002 FSM One thing to look at is the rubber connection, at the T, by the plenum. I found my leak at this piece, even though it looked connected. The piece looked more like foam than solid rubber.

Ok so the t-connector is solid, the lines all look good. The cable is attached to the TB like it should. I can turn on and off the cruise control light all I want. So those buttons work. On one run, when I hit the accelerate button on the other side the cruise light went off and wouldn't come back on till I shut the car off and started it again. Weird. I pulled the pedal out to make sure it was clicking that button in, it seems ok but next I'm going to try taping the button down and do a short run to see if it engages when I try to set it. Could be vacuum related elsewhere? The car while in gear and stopped, has a shudder/vibration. The RPMs don't fluctuate or anything but to me it reminds me of a vacuum leak. At first I thought it was bad gas because I bought this car and it hasn't ran in quite some time, I added a fuel injector cleaner to what was in there and burned that half tank and tonight she got a fresh full tank with another injector cleaner. The shudder is still kinda there. edit: if you have the cruise on, and you hit the brake - isn't the light supposed to go off in the dash? If anyone can tell me this, it would really narrow it down I think.

Stepping on the brake should not turn the light off, it would just disengage.

Ok - just wanted to make sure.

I think my servo is toast. All the lines are getting good vacuum when I disconnect from the plenum, with the car running and unplugging the vacuum line going right into the top of the servo - there's good suction. I could check the harness underneath, what sort of voltage should it be getting?

It could be the actual SET switch is shot. Have you tried checking for stored codes? From what I have read, the CEL does not always come on when there is an issue with the cruise control and need DRB3. I'm not positive, just what I read.

99 dodge durango cruise control

Other than than resesting the plunger on the brake light switch, did you also check the continuty of the switch terminal's for the cruise control to see that they are changing state from N.C. to N.O. and vise versa. There are 3 different sets of contact's in the switch terminals 1&2 and 3&4 control cruise control, and 5&6 are for the brake lamp.

Ok so I swapped in a different servo and it's the same deal. Checked all the cable connections, everything is good. So now I'm going to focus more on the steering wheel switch or the brake switch. Or figure out how to check the harness connecting to the servo, make sure it's sending a signal. There's no codes related to cruise control in the car.

99 dodge durango cruise control

Did you figure out what the problem was?

I've got my money on the brake light switch. It has been the biggest reason of non-operitive cruise controls I've seen, either from being out of adjustment or just having bad/worn contacts. You can get get the brake switch's most places for about $15-20. Otherwise use an Ohm meter and check for different resistance values of each of the crusie switches by pressing one at a time. I would start at the clock spring connector (RD/LG & BK/LB wires) and work down line to the PCM.

I got about 20 to choose from at the local pick n pull, I'll take my chances there first. How do you remove it? Kinda hard to squat under there and see lol

99 dodge durango cruise control

It's like a 1/4 twist (I believe CCW) to have it come out of the bracket. Then to install, you have to twist the opposite direction while pressing it against the bracket.

Awesome thanks - how about those steering wheel buttons? Might as well grab ones at the the pick n pull while I'm there. Just some screws on the backside of the steering wheel? Or is the harness connector down in the column somewhere?

iv'e had to take my brake switch apart a few times. those contacts in there are made of really thin spring steel it looks like, wouldn't be hard to get one bent out of shape or to snap after so many years.

Mine definitely still has a spring behavior to it.

99 dodge durango cruise control

This will tell you the size Torx you need for the wheel. I don't think you'll need to take the wheel off ... just stop at step #6.

For the cruise switches, there's a single torx head screw on each one - accessible thru a hole on the forward side of the steering wheel.

Ok I removed the assembly, looked fairly clean. Nothing looked burnt but some of those resistors are pretty small. Put it all back together and while it still turns on, it won't set. Either tomorrow or Wednesday I'll swing by the local yard and grab a button or two and possibly a brake switch.

FWIW, here are the approx. resistor values (in kohms): On/Off 0.0 Set 6.7 Resume/Accel 15 Cancel 0.92 Coast 3.0

If you had access to a DRB III you easily test your cruise control button's without even having to remove them. Still have my money on the brake switch.

my light comes on when setting still goes off when giving it gas HELP [email protected]

Could be several things. Brake switch could be out of adjustment. Also it was learned in one of the LH forums some years ago that if the cam position sensor is on its way out, you won't notice anything wrong with how your engine is running, but the PCM occasionally picks up on the problem, and turns the cruise control off (as a precaution?). One owner discovered this after similar problems with his cruise control turning itself off - couldn't figure out why. Then one day his cam sensor solid failed. Magically, after he replaced the cam sensor, his cruise control worked perfectly from then on. He put 2 and 2 together. People were skeptical, but sure enough, over a couple of years after that, several others, including myself, had the same thing happen - weeks or months of unexplained flaky cruise control operation, and either pre-emptively replacing the cam position sensor or waiting for it to fail and then replacing it fixed the cruise control.. There could be other causes - should get an idea of other things to look at from reading this thread, but the brake switch and failing cam sensor or two of the more common ones.

Cruise Control problems of the 1999 Dodge Durango

Four problems related to cruise control have been reported for the 1999 Dodge Durango. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Cruise Control problem

1999 Dodge Durango 5. 2. Engine accelerated with throttle stuck full open I was unable to brake. I was traveling around a bend around 45mph downhill as I got to the turn in the bend my car accelerated tremendously I applied the brakes to slow down and was unable too. I checked the mat, it felt like the gas pedal was stuck to the floor the way the car sounded. I checked to see if anything else was in the way shoes, carpet. Nothing! they were no check engine light on nor the cruise control on. The car started to really race. I had a cliff on one side of me and an embankment on the other. I was catching up with the cars in front of me so I needed to stop immediately. I placed two feet forcebly on the brakes and didn't notice any slowing down at all and I was nearing the embankment. I steered out of traffic only to notice my car going faster as we are now coming to a level highway. I steered off to the side and put the gear in neutral and applied the brakes no luck! I stepped on the parking brake, placed the car in park and turned off the engine. This finally stopped the car. Towed the car to my mechanic couldn't find out anything because they could not duplicate the problem. 2 weeks ago this happened again, it went straight to the dealers and they can't find anything. They installed a CO-pilot to pick up the error codes the next time this happens. Basically a black box. I am afraid to drive it. I was lucky I didn't get into 2 accidents, though I came really close. My car is still at the dealership. I want them to really diagnose every part of this car. They still cannot find anything wrong they wanted me to pick it up, knowing what had happened. This is not driver error. I regularly maintain my car. This is a defect, and places everyone in harms way. Car racing uncontrollably and unable to stop the acceleration with the brakes this is a real problem.

2 Cruise Control problem

After repair of cruise control brake switch the cruise control began to accelerate very quickly and would not disengage after hitting the brake pedal. Nlm.

3 Cruise Control problem

While I was driving down interstate 20 my Durango began to accelerate on its own, and I could not get it to stop. Cruise controlwas not on. I had to ride brake hard to get off interstate, and I had to put on emergency brake to come to stop,. My rear wheels continued to spin, and only way I was able to stop vehicle was to shut engine off with keys. I had both my children (ages 2 and 4)with me at the time and we were lucky not to be injured or killed. We took Durango in to dealership listed in this report, and they were not able to find anything wrong. I was told it was a fluke and t hat manufacturer had never heard of this problem with any other Durango. Since then I have heard of this happening numerous times to other drivers. One instance made the news as the police thought the driver of rthe Durango was trying to out run them. Please notify me if you have heard of this happening to anyone else and advise me of what my next step is.

4 Cruise Control problem

When cruise control is on rpms fluctuate. Speed is not affected, it stays the same. Cruise control module was no good. Dealer didn't give an explaination.

Currently my cruise control does not work. The switch on the steering wheel used to illuminate the light on the dash (now does that intermittently) but the cruise would never set. I've been told it may be related to the rear wheel speed sensor, but haven't replaced that yet to find out.

Adaptive Cruise Control Sensor

  • Add to quote

Well driving to a baseball game yesterday on the highway and a semi had a tire come apart in front of us. One of the pieces hit the lower grill and took out the radar sensor, so now the ACC does not work. Did not do alot of other damage but I think that sensor is $1500+ to replace. Has anyone done this? I have seen online that even if I buy a used part it has to be "calibrated" by the dealer. I will check tomorrow but wonder if anyone else has experience working on this? Thanks Doug

99 dodge durango cruise control

I just did a quick lookup in the radar for a 2015, it is $1080 at east coast moparts.. It does need to be calibrated, attached is the '14 GC procedure..

I have a used one off of a 2011 R/T for sale if you are interested, PM me for details. Not sure if it is the same part number.

Dumb question, but how do I tell if my 17’ Durango has this ACC option? Sensor in grill right? I don’t see one in my lower grill. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
