U.S. wine regions worth visiting

Willamette Valley | Oregon

1.  Willamette Valley | Oregon

Some say this valley has been producing some of the best pinot noir on Earth over the last half-decade. It boasts 700 different wineries across 150 miles, and alongside its notable pinot varietals it offers heritage and natural wines. Willamette Valley is its own American Viticulture Area with 11 sub-AVAs. There are many ways to enjoy tasting here, including guided and personal tours, wine dinners, and the chance to drift over the vine rows in a helicopter or hot air balloon. Alaska Airlines lets you fly a case of wine home for free from certain cities. Our favorite thing here? The world’s first Queer Wine Fest , now an annual event.

Sonoma County | California

2.  Sonoma County | California

It’s not always easy living in the shadow of a big sister like Napa, but Sonoma County arguably offers a better pace, less crowded tasting rooms and a beautiful historic downtown in the city of Sonoma itself. Visit more than 425 wineries across 60,000 acres of vines (plus dine at Michelin-starred and Zagat-rated restaurants). This county includes 19 American Viticulture Areas ranging from the Russian River Valley to the Petaluma Gap (just designated in 2018), and from Moon Mountain to the Pacific shores at Fort Ross-Seaview. Download the app to start planning your itinerary.

Napa Valley | California

3.  Napa Valley | California

It’s got name recognition for a reason: this incredible valley is world-famous for its vineyards with incredible views, delicious cabernet sauvignons and wine trail with more than 400 wineries and 90 urban tasting rooms. There are several climates within the region that present terroir appropriate for a variety of grapes. Most of the county falls under the Napa Valley American Viticultural Area. Winemaking began here in the mid-1800s, suffered from the twin tragedies of a phylloxera outbreak and then Prohibition—things didn’t get back into full swing until the 1960s. But what a bounce back! In 1976, Napa wines beat out famous French wines and tourism has swelled since then, with a wine train , wine trail, wine castles and more.

Yakima Valley | Washington

4.  Yakima Valley | Washington

Just a few hours from Seattle, this valley offers more than 90 wineries over 70 miles, incorporating six American Viticulture Areas. Known for reds like merlot, cabernet sauvignon and syrah, Yakima Valley also has a craft beer trail in case the sig-oth isn’t into it (perish the thought, but it happens). Check out the Spring Barrel Tasting every April with tastes straight from the barrel or Catch the Crush in the fall with the chance to stomp grapes yourself just like Lucy.

Madera County | California

5.  Madera County | California

This is one of the oldest grape growing regions in the U.S., located near Yosemite National Park , and its American Viticulture Area is one of the oldest in California. It dates to the late 1800s when immigrants from Italy, Armenia and France began farming with expertise brought from abroad. Few of those wineries survived Prohibition but many sprang up afterwards. Known for dessert wines and ports, the Madera region has nine wineries on its wine trail. Notable is Papagni Wines, which began in 1920 when Demetrio Papagni emigrated to Fresno from Bari, Italy, with his son Angelo creating the state of the art winery in Madera in 1973.

Santa Barbara County | California

6.  Santa Barbara County | California

This diverse wine-growing region benefits from the east-west orientation of Santa Barbara’s mountain ranges; the resulting microclimates support more than 80 varietals. Seven American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) lie within the county. The best introduction is the Urban Wine Trail, with more than 20 wineries that are mostly within walking distance of each other. New ones are being added all the time, and Wine Enthusiast called this county the wine region of the year in 2021. Watch for the inaugural Natural Coast Wine Fest later this month, a natural wine fair featuring Central Coast wine producers. We also love the playful Bingo for Bottles fundraiser events.

Loudoun County | Virginia

7.  Loudoun County | Virginia

Just outside of Washington, D.C., this Virginia county offers nearly 50 wineries with a wine trail map. Loudoun’s known for Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Norton grape varietals. Enjoy barrel tastings, stomping on grapes, vinotherapy spa treatments (where wine pulp and pips are rubbed into your skin), and Vinyasa in the Vines yoga classes. Spanning the counties of Loudoun and Fauquier, the Middleburg AVA was established in 2012 with almost 24 winemakers across 200 square miles.

Wine Islands | British Columbia

8.  Wine Islands | British Columbia

The only thing better than a fantasy island has to be a wine island. This collective of wineries on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands off Canada’s southwest coast has emerged with a great name after plantings in the 1970s and ‘80s have matured: cabernet sauvignon and black muscat, along with around 100 other varieties. These grapes benefit from sea winds and volcanic soil, and now there are more than 30 wineries on the islands. Hot tip: take a five-day wine expedition cruise on a catamaran through the Salish Sea in the fall, with sea lions and surfacing whales as you toast with your onboard sommelier. This Maple Leaf Wines and Islands trip lets you hike, kayak and walk the vineyards with local winemakers.

Dahlonega | Georgia

9.  Dahlonega | Georgia

Here in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains is an enclave of eight wineries and 12 tasting rooms showcasing the spoils of 100 acres of European, French hybrid and American vines. Watch for the Dahlonega Wine Trail Weekend each August, but visit anytime for tours and tastings. Wander Dahlonega’s charming streets with their National Register status as a historic downtown district, where seven tasting rooms are in walking distance of Dahlonega Historic Square.

Finger Lakes Wine Country| New York

10.  Finger Lakes Wine Country| New York

This 3,000 square mile area incorporates five counties and three wine trails. More than 100 wineries, breweries and distilleries cluster around the beautiful, narrow finger-shaped glacial lakes in New York. This area specializes in aromatic whites like riesling and gewurztraminer, although cool-climate reds like cabernet franc and pinot noir are also doing well. The lakes’ maintenance of a steady temperature gives these grapes a longer growing season and combats the early frost danger. Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake are separate American Viticultural Areas within the larger Finger Lakes AVA.

We started our vacation in Lisbon, with 4 days of guided tours with Pedro. He was wonderful - always on time, so courteous, and a wealth of information. It would be hard to find someone with more knowledge of the history of his country. He shared so much detail about each of the sites we visited, and was able to answer any questions. If you get a chance to book a tour with Pedro, do it. You won’t be disappointed!

Paradisial Peloponnese (All Inclusive & Guided In-Depth Tour) Tour

Paradisial Peloponnese (All Inclusive & Guided In-Depth Tour)

As a mature couple Goerge encouraged us to choose Pic Tours of Greece's Paradisiacal Peleponnese tour. Just before the tour began, one of us developed some mobility issues and advised George we may have to sit out some activities. He reassured us that this tour would be able to accommodate our changed circumstances. We have just got back from the best tour we have ever been on. The standard and variety of accommodation was exemplary. George planned every lunch and dinner menu to ensure we had the highest quality, Greek, food and no lunch or dinner dishes were repeated during the whole tour. The food was amazing and plentiful. Vivy, our guide, was so well informed and had the gift of sharing her sense of awe and amazement as she patiently explained the importance of each monument and the archaeological sites we visited. There were three couples on our tour, none of whom knew each other prior to the tour and several of whom experienced mobility or other health issues along the way. ALL of our needs were met with kindness, patience and understanding and tailored adjustments were made to the itinerary to meet everyone's needs. We cannot recommend this tour more highly and huge thanks to George and Vivy for making this the best (of many) tour we have ever experienced.

Nothing was too much trouble. We were treated exceptionally well, just like family. This was a fabulous tour. Would absolutely recommend it.

Cycle Provence Tour

Cycle Provence

Everything that mattered was really good! The group of participants gelled very well, everyone seemed to enjoy the company of everyone else, so the marketing must be well focussed to get such a group of like-minded, like-focussed people. The tour leader was excellent. Andrew was able to read the group, adjust the activities, up or down, so that everyone seemed satisfied, regardless of their ability. Accommodations were basic, but comfortable, and there really wasn't time to do anything in the room but sleep and shower after the days' activities and socialising. The activity level was fairly demanding, days were full. It is not a relaxing vacation, but very satisfying for anyone looking for this kind of adventure

Florence City Break - 3 Days/2 Nights Tour

Florence City Break - 3 Days/2 Nights

I am 21 years old and myself and 3 of my friends (ages 18-20) booked this tour as a way to see Florence without breaking the bank. I can honestly say that it was more than I expected it to be. We were blessed with great weather which contributed to our satisfaction of the tour. The wine tour was absolutely amazing! The vineyards we visited as well as the sights we got to see along the way were like something out of the movies. The tour would not have been the same without our phenomenal guide Veronica! She was so informative and we learned so much about Florence and Italy that we didn't know before. We never wanted to leave and are for sure coming back to visit again!

What people love about Wine tasting Tours

We did the 9 day tour through Morocco starting October 16 and we really enjoyed it. Our driver Ismail who was very helpful in ensuring we reached all of our destinations on time. Driving in Moroccan cities can be a white knuckle experience with the donkey carts and motorcycles but this young man was very competent, always calm, and made our trip a lot of fun. All of our accommodations were clean, quiet and very comfortable. The Riad and guesthouse staff were kind and professional. The walking tour guides were helpful in Fez and Marrakesh because with all the little alleys it is very very easy to get lost (and we did!) Bring extra cash for tips and make sure you have some toilet paper with you at all times. It would have been helpful to have a more detailed itinerary but with the earthquake I suspect there were many last minute changes. Overall we loved our trip to the land of many colours and flavours.

Napa Valley Wineries

Our deep roots produce world-class wine and unforgettable experiences, enjoy intimate wine tastings, expansive outdoor spaces, and behind-the-scenes private tours of wine cellars and caves. plus, 95% of our wineries are family-owned and operated, which means nearly every spot will feel like home..

When you’re ready for a taste of Napa Valley, our wineries are ready to provide you with an unforgettable experience.

With hundreds of wineries to explore, each with its own unique style, setting and history, planning your Napa Valley wine tasting excursion may seem overwhelming. But whether you are visiting just for fun or to delve into that library collection and stock the cellar, there is an experience and price point for everyone.

With wineries updating their tasting areas to create more spacious, intimate settings, capacity is limited and tastings are conducted by appointment only. Some wineries have permit restrictions that limit the number of guests that can visit each day, so it’s best to plan tasting appointments a few weeks ahead of time.

Take a look at the directory below to find the right wineries for your getaway.

#VISITNAPAVALLEY

With hundreds of wineries and miles of the valley to explore, we want you to know there's no wrong way to enjoy Napa Valley

Can I wear jeans to a winery?

Yes! Jeans are acceptable year-round – we call it wine country casual (for women — sundresses, blouses and skirts, nice jeans, wedges, sandals, etc.; for men – golf shirts, khaki pants, nice jeans, dressier shorts, stylish sneakers, boat shoes, etc.).

A more upscale winery might call for darker denim, and be sure to dress in layers as many winery experiences take place outdoors and tours often take guests through wine caves and chilled cellar areas.

How do I taste wine?

First of all: Wine should be enjoyed , so don't overthink it – have fun and drink what you like.

If you want to taste like a professional:

  • LOOK at the color and clarity
  • SWIRL to release the aromas
  • SNIFF to prepare your palate
  • SIP and enjoy the complexities
  • Spit into a "dump bucket" if you don't want to get inebriated.

13 Best California Wine Tours for Learning, Sipping, and Sightseeing

Sip your way through the Golden State on these California wine tours.

Anne Olivia Bauso is a travel writer and hotel expert based in New York City. She has written hundreds of hotel reviews, from 5-star Ritz-Carlton properties to treehouse eco-resorts in the jungle.

wine tour vacations

Large swaths of beautiful California countryside are dedicated to the production of wine, with boutique and big-name wineries alike producing some of the most famous varietals in the world. After all, Napa Valley wines are up there with Burgundy and Bordeaux in terms of clout.

Idyllic vineyard visits are a lovely part of the California experience, but they're not without their behind-the-scenes stressors: There's the Google mapping, the hours-checking, and of course, the driving or arranging of transportation. Plus, there are literally thousands of California wineries and vineyards to choose from — 3,600 by one count. Even after narrowing it down to a certain region, you're looking at dozens (if not hundreds) of prospective properties.

There is an easier way. Guided wine tours take the legwork and logistics out of the trip. All you have to do is admire the rolling scenery and sip delicious wines at each stop. Maybe take a note or two, if you're so inspired, and doze off as your driver gets you home safely.

The best California wine tours can be geared toward anyone, from total newbies and nightly sippers, to pinot lovers hoping to discover more great reds and couples looking to relive a trip to Provence. They're intimate affairs that favor luxury vehicles and small vans to 50-person buses. The following California wine tours have earned high praise for their tailor-made itineraries and unfailingly kind, informative — and sober — guides and chauffeurs.

Painted Ladies Wine Country Tour

Painted Ladies Tour Company is beloved for their San Francisco city tours tootling around in a (very on-theme) vintage VW bus. The family-run operation also spins their retro wheels through legendary Sonoma Valley on small-group tours to up-and-coming wine producers. Past guests rave about the friendly guides, great road-trip vibe, and the thoughtfully selected lineup that includes an Italian winery for lunch. And don't worry — you'll get a Golden Gate Bridge photo op.

Toast Tours

If your group has some beer and whiskey fans in the mix, this Paso Robles company is an excellent choice. Groups aboard Toast's 12-person shuttle buses can visit distilleries, micro-breweries, and even a cidery, as well as local wineries. ( Tablas Creek Vineyard is a favorite for its organic Rhone-inspired wines and herd of cute alpacas.) Other tours can combine wine country with two classic California sites: Hearst Castle and Pismo Beach.

Edge of the World Tours

This local favorite does tours around San Francisco and Sonoma Wine Country. They visit both boutique and commercial wineries, highlighting local flavors and generous pours. Take the nine-hour Great Wine Tour with up to 13 other people in a van that takes you to three different wineries, lunch in historic Sonoma village, through scenic Sausalito, and to a photo stop at the Golden Gate Bridge. Or, create your own bespoke tour like a walk through the Giant Sequoias followed by a wine tasting in the Sierra foothills.

Bin 415 Private Tours

Something that sets Bin 415 apart is the fact that its guides are certified sommeliers, so they really, really know their stuff. The SF-based tour group organizes private, totally custom wine trips (via Mercedes SUVs, no less) exploring Sonoma and Napa's celebrated varietals. Guides and the vintners themselves illustrate everything from harvesting grapes to bottling. Lunch is a highlight, with past stops including French country cooking (at The Girl & the Fig in Sonoma) and farm-to-table New American (at Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch in St. Helena). For those looking to splurge, Bin 415 will try to snag coveted French Laundry reservations.

Squire Livery Tours

While some winery tours embrace the flash factor — Segways! limo vans! party buses! — the three-person team at Squire Livery Tours keeps things sweet and simple with a two-car fleet and a hosting style that's nothing short of a delight. Run by the knowledgeable Kent Higginbotham, a true Napa/Sonoma connoisseur who's lived in the valley most of his life, Squire lets you be as hands-on or -off as you'd like — let them know what you'd like to try (you could, for example, mention that you're a sucker for riesling or want to learn more about cabernet sauvignon) or simply leave everything to the guides. When possible, they'll arrange for private tastings at times when the estate is closed to the public, something vintners often do for VIPs and industry insiders. Past guests regularly gush about Squire guides' expertise and genuine warmth, and report never feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Baja California Wine Tours

If you're visiting San Diego, consider swapping the craft breweries of North Park and Ocean Beach for the highland vineyards of northwest Mexico. With San Diego as its starting point, Baja California Wine Tours leads day trips or even overnights to the famous Valle de Guadalupe, where the altitude, soil, and Mediterranean-like climate grow everything from chardonnay to malbec. Spectacular mountain scenery is a given, and tours can include stops at a 19th-century horse ranch, the studio whose water tanks were used to film Titanic and Deep Blue Sea , and laid-back Mexican beach towns like Ensenada and Rosarito for fresh ceviche and horseback-riding on the sand.

Food & Farm Tours

A day dedicated to wine, cheese, and baby goats? Irresistible. Food & Farm Tours celebrates Northern California's glorious food scene with tours to artisanal food producers and organic farms in Marin and Sonoma counties. The most popular circuit goes to Hog Island Oyster Farm , Cowgirl Creamery , and Brickmaiden Breads , but tailored tours can include sampling crave-worthy sparkling honey wine at Heidrun Meadery or certified organic whites and reds at McEvoy Ranch .

Sustainable Wine Tours

Sustainable Wine Tours specializes in day trips exploring Santa Ynez Valley, one of the five viticultural areas in Santa Barbara wine country. At the helm of Tesla SUVs or Mercedes Sprinters, tour guides bring small parties to a handful of the region's friendly, family-owned wine operations for private tastings. While sampling bottles and charcuterie boards, guests learn about the winemaking process — from picking fruits to fermenting — from estate owners and winemakers.

Noble Wine Tours

Even if you consider yourself somewhat of a wine expert, trying to nail down which of Napa and Sonoma's hundreds (and hundreds ) of wineries to visit is daunting. Noble Wine's Austin Smith takes research out of the equation with his bespoke itineraries based on guest likes, preferences, and interests. Have a thing for pét-nat? Want to visit the winery that put Napa on the map after famously dethroning noble French wines in a blind-tasting competition? (Wine rookies without a clue where to begin are in great hands, too.) Nearly everyone who's vineyard-hopped with Noble praises Smith for his courteousness, professionalism, and insane knowledge on all things California wine. He also doubles as a photographer, keeping a pro camera on hand to help capture the day.

Sonoma Valley Wine Trolley

YinYang/Getty Images

This hand-built replica of a San Francisco street car takes guests on six-hour tours through Sonoma Valley. Tours include a history of the area in addition to three different tasting sessions at local wineries and a boxed lunch. Sonoma Valley Wine Trolley tours are perfect for all kinds of oenophiles and highlight the best of the region’s sprawling estates and wine caves.

West Wine Tours

West Wine Tours are designed to provide both a fun intro to Sonoma wines and easy transport — in this case, courtesy of bright VW vans refurbished with chic seating nooks ready for their moment on social media. The company's "Women in Wine Country" tour focuses on woman-led wineries, with stops at Fantesca Estate & Winery , St. Clair Brown Winery & Brewery (owner Elaine St. Clair is the only female commercial winemaker and brewer in the United States), and the ultra-friendly Crocker & Starr in St. Helena, where co-owner Pam Starr and winemaker Evyn Cameron produce superlative, sustainable wines, including well-loved cabernet francs and sauvignon blancs.

Green Dream Tours

If you’re looking for a more intimate wine-country experience, consider one of Green Dream Tours ’ private tours. The company specializes in full and half-day tours of Napa and Sonoma wineries. Spend the day riding through the gorgeous landscape in a luxury vehicle like a BMW convertible, limo bus, or executive coach with a private guide. They also do open tours that still feel special as Green Dream keeps the groups small and puts a lot of attention into curating the selection of boutique wineries you’ll visit. The Combo Tour of Napa and Sonoma is one of the most popular options — all tasting fees are included and you’ll make a stop at Oxbow Public Market for lunch.

Napa Valley Wine Train

Pair a glass of sparkling wine with the classic glamour of train travel on the Napa Valley Wine Train . This popular tour, which runs on a rail line originally built in 1864, travels three hours from Downtown Napa to St. Helena and back. In addition to sipping varietals from Napa vineyards like Castello Di Amorosa and Sequoia Grove and enjoying picturesque wine country views, tours include winery visits and multi-course gourmet meals of dishes like yellowfin tuna tartare or pan-seared Pacific halibut. You can choose from a variety of experiences, ranging from three to six hours, like the Romance on the Rails trip or a special murder mystery dinner.

6 American Wine Vacations to Take This Season

From Vermont to Washington, these domestic wine getaways are calling your name.

Drinking wine on a sun-drenched patio overlooking a lush vineyard, with one of the estate's gregarious dogs popping by for a scrap of fallen charcuterie, will never go out of style. But though this blissful activity remains the number one attraction in wine regions around the U.S., it's far from the only factor sealing the fate of the wine vacation's longevity.

The best wine vacations, like the best wine regions, are expansive and explorative, free of intimidating barriers with the help of hip accommodations, live music, and funky art gallery tasting rooms.

A number of wineries around the U.S. endeavor to do it all: attract a younger crowd, demonstrate a family-friendly position, and uphold the luxe wine vacation as a matter of course. These days you'll find choice accommodations, plentiful dining options, and lots of non-wine tasting activities for non-drinkers, as well.

From Vermont to Washington, these are the best wine trips to take in the U.S. right now.

Lake Chelan

It's the sheer range of wineries in this thriving Washington State wine region (an easy hour flight from Seattle), that makes it an excellent vacation spot no matter what vibe you find most compelling: elegant and refined; cool and hip; serene and remote. Adventure seekers will want to hit up the South Shore after an afternoon of tastings, while everyone will want to check out the downtown scene, replete with tasting rooms, boutiques, coffee shops, and fine-dining restaurants.

There may be no better pairing with the Estate Syrah than the view from the deck at Four Lakes Winery . Then again, Lake Chelan Winery , which also makes Lake Chelan cheese — to be enjoyed with the wine on-site or kept for snacking later — has an equally beautiful backdrop. The seasonal barbecue menu's tri-tip ought to be enjoyed with a glass of Malbec or Cabernet Sauvignon.

Family-friendly lodgings like Lake's Edge Tuscan Lodge and a handful of bed and breakfasts are just the right amount of unassuming in this bountiful wine region.

Hill Country

A trip to Texas no longer needs to be defined by the country's best barbecue — though you'd be remiss not to get brisket from at least one of Austin's smoke joints. Pick up a plate of meat and sides from La Barbecue or Black's Barbecue before heading west toward Central Texas, where the inviting wine country has become a rightful destination in the Lone Star State.

For some of the prettiest views around, you can't do much better than Driftwood Estate Winery . Its vast grounds make for peaceful tastings — even when the daily visitor numbers tell a different story. Other worthy options include Pedernales Cellars and Heath Sparkling Wine , the latter's bubble perfect for toasting to the end of a day well spent.

Since a spa treatment always makes a good addition to any vacation, consider a stay at either Omni Barton Creek Resort and Spa or La Cantera Resort and Spa where professional masseuses can work away any knots the wine inexplicably missed.

The Finger Lakes

From New York City, it's about a five-hour drive to the Finger Lakes region in Upstate New York. Although it took a little time for this region located on Keuka, Seneca, and Cayuga Lakes to be recognized with the respect it deserves, it's certainly caught up with any lag in visitors in recent years.

Accommodations such as The Inns of Aurora , a peaceful, four-star property situated on Cayuga Lake, and Pleasant Valley Inn , circa 1848, continue to do their hospitable part. Following an afternoon of wine tasting, you might choose to melt further into not-having-a-care-in-the-world territory with a visit to Aurora's spa, followed by dinner at the historic 1833 Kitchen & Bar.

As to that afternoon of wine tasting: A number of area wineries command your attention: Bloomer Creek , a Cayuga Lake winery pouring several skin contact wines; Sheldrake Point Winery , also on Cayuga, serving several Rieslings to help you fall for the cool climate grape; Red Newt Cellars , a Seneca Lake spot with a sizeable tasting menu and a coffee shop; and Keuka Spring Vineyards , one of the best places on Keuka Lake for Gewurztraminer.

Dinner can be light and breezy — provisions from The Olney Place and Red Feet Wine Market & Spirit Provisions — or more of an affair, though you'll need a reservation if you hope to dine at F.L.X. Table .

As the realities of climate change dare anyone to ignore their increasing harshness, the winemakers in Vermont are well-positioned. Though you won't detect any smug satisfaction here because this is Vermont, and Vermont is actually as unpretentious and laid-back as you've come to believe, you will find excellent natural wines, much of them made with hybrid grapes that can handle the harsh winters.

Though many are open year-round, Vermont's wineries are best explored in the summer and fall. Shelburne Vineyards makes a strong case for a summer vacation, thanks to its Bluegrass and BBQ events, but it's a beautiful spot to visit year-round, whether for tastings or on-site bottle purchases that pair well with local provisions consisting primarily of cheese and charcuterie. Snow Farm also entices in the warmer months with a full lineup of summer concerts, but more relaxed vibes can be found off-season when ample indoor seating provides a pleasant setting for sipping the estate's Marquette, Baco Noir, or the natural and unfiltered Pet Nat "Snow Trip."

Stay at The Essex for extremely good eating and a spa day, or Hotel Vermont for easy access to downtown Burlington.

Napa Valley

Although it may be trendier to taste wine at a Colorado or Texas vineyard, Napa Valley always makes for a splendid wine vacation. The region, home to dozens of world-class wineries, remains the gold standard when it comes to Vitis vinifera heavy hitters: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir.

There's no shortage of opportunities to sip these varietals in increasingly gorgeous settings. Newcomer Four Seasons Napa Valley , slated to open in October, sits on the same property as Elusa Winery . Led by world-class winemaker, Thomas Rivers Brown, it may be tempting not to leave the premises at all.

Guests staying at the recently renovated Poetry Inn may also be enticed to linger awhile, particularly in the capacious Robert Frost suite. Still, just down the road is Cliff Lede , with its vineyard blocks named after rock songs and art gallery tasting room. You'd be remiss not to taste the selections at Frank Family Vineyard and Sullivan Rutherford Estate . Snag a dinner reservation at The Charter Oak or Thomas Keller's Ad Hoc .

The North Fork

Another New York State gem is this long-discovered, yet still relatively relaxed region of Long Island. The towns comprising the North Fork have contributed to the area's steady emergence as a rightful destination for a wine-focused trip. Diverse wineries, farm-to-table restaurant fare, roadside fruit, and vegetable stands with just-procured produce, and a lovely range of accommodations invite slower-paced travel.

Stay at American Beech, a dog-friendly hotel (many of the wineries also welcome well-behaved, dog leashes) with large, inviting rooms. If you don't mind a ferry ride, consider a stay at The Chequit on Shelter Island, which allows for easy enough access to the North Fork hub. Regardless of your lodging, it's always a good idea to rent a bike and visit a few wineries on two wheels — so long as you're making good use of the spit bucket.

The lack of large crowds (no buses or limos are allowed) at Kontokosta makes it a favorite among those wishing for a more chill setting. In addition to its intimate feel, the Greenport winery invites guests to sip wine (try the sparkling Sauvignon Blanc) with stunning views of the Long Island Sound as the backdrop.

Bedell Cellars , one of the area's longest-standing wineries, is open to groups of up to 12, and you don't even need a reservation. Paumanok Vineyards , on the other hand, requires a reservation to enjoy its wine flights and by-the-glass options, along with savory small bites like cheese (Triple Creme Brie from Four Fat Foul; Purple Haze from Cypress Grove), pate, and a chicken liver mousse.

More About Napa Valley & Sonoma

Napa Valley, known for its Chardonnay, Merlots, and Cabernet Sauvignon, is a beautiful region comprised of four main towns – Napa, Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga. With wineries clustered close together, it’s easy to hop from vineyard to vineyard to try it all. A mere hour’s drive away, the neighboring region of Sonoma is home to the main towns of Sonoma and Healdsburg as well as numerous smaller towns, each with its own charming tasting rooms. Unlike Napa Valley, Sonoma sprawls over a much larger footprint so plan for additional travel time between wineries. If you want the freedom to fully soak in the scenery between sips, consider taking part in a tour to facilitate your visit. Both Napa Valley and Sonoma can be enjoyed at any time of the year. In the spring, you’ll witness nature in full bloom. In the summer, exciting events are hosted nearly every weekend. In autumn, experience the harvest and the great crush – the first step of a grape’s transformation into wine. In winter, unwind in the laid-back atmosphere of the luxurious spas. No matter when you choose to visit, an enjoyable experience awaits!

“My wife Candace and I have done a fair bit of traveling in our four decades of marriage, and we both agree that our time with Bordeaux Wine Vacations ranks quite highly. I did not imagine in my wildest dreams that the chateaux we visited would be so stunningly beautiful, nor that we would be so incredibly spoiled and coddled by Andrew and Dan. We have already recommended BORDEAUX WINE VACATIONS to a number of our friends, and we will continue to do so at every opportunity. Merci mille fois, Andrew & Dan!!”

“From my first contact with Daniel last year to Andrew’s smoothing our way through the airport at our departure, everything far exceeded anything we could have imagined. It was so much fun; we learned so much and have so many fabulous memories. And your care and concern for us allowed us to truly be present and immersed in every day’s experiences. You made this one of the highlights of our lives. We feel that Andrew has become part of the family.”

“The city of Bordeaux was everything we thought it would be and more. The best part was Bordeaux Wine Vacations. We got to see and experience many sites that we would not have known about had we been on our own. Our guide, Andrew, was quite knowledgeable and fun to be with. Two thumbs up!”

“I’ve been to  Bordeaux twice now with BWV and I can’t wait to go back for a third time. Besides the great food and fine wine, there is so much to do in the city and the wine vineyards that you will want to go back again and again.”

– Leslie & Frank (2019)

wine tour vacations

“Our Bordeaux Wine Vacation experience ended up being the highlight of our four weeks in France. As committed Francophiles, we’ve had many wonderful visits to our favorite country and have been a part of various tours, group excursions as well as solo adventures. The week spent in Bordeaux and the experiences made possible through Bordeaux Wine Vacations exceeded any and all expectations we had. The wineries we visited all had a unique approach to their winemaking process, so the tours were always fresh. We enjoyed them all, but there were some magical moments, Chateau d’Yquem and Chateau George 7 come to mind.

Our guide for the week (Andrew) was extremely knowledgeable about the city of Bordeaux as well as the world-famous wines produced in this region. Due partly to that and mostly to Andrew’s great personality, by the end of the second day, it was more like going out with a good friend than a tour guide/client relation

We would not hesitate to book another tour with Andrew and Daniel for our next visit to Bordeaux. We highly recommend Bordeaux Wine Vacations to anyone considering a wine immersion visit to the Bordeaux region of France.”

Governor DeWine tours Adams County, meets residents dealing with aftermath of EF1 tornado

wine tour vacations

WEST UNION, Ohio — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine spent Friday surveying damage in Adams and Lawrence counties after an EF1 tornado hit the communities during Tuesday's severe weather.

DeWine said his administration is going through the assessment process to see how the state can help.

"Sometimes people think FEMA comes in every single time and brings money but that’s just not the way it works," DeWine said. "There’s a whole threshold you have to meet, so we’re looking at the point of view from the state to see kind of what the unmet needs are and what we can do to be of assistance."

DeWine plans to email his team within the next 24 hours about what he saw.

"You can see reports, you can see pictures but until you’ve been there and really talk to the people who are impacted you just can’t really understand it," DeWine said.

He said he hopes to help people who may not be able to cover the damages.

"Well, what we’ve heard is that we have some families that totally lost their home, and we understand that they were either uninsured or underinsured," he said.

One of the homes DeWine toured was the Unger property. Tammy Unger is hoping her insurance covers the costs of repairing her home.

"It’s kind of surreal. You know I can go in the house, and I do things and then I kind of forget, and then I come back out, 'Oh yeah, that’s what we’re doing. I forgot,'" she said.

Siding and insulation from her home, barn, shop and shed are scattered across Unger's property, in the trees and a pond.

"I am not a fragile person. I’m a very strong person, but this has really taken a toll on me. It has been stressful to try and think of all the things I need to cover," she said.

Unger said it was a lot to take in all the damage.

"I know the first night, we pulled in here and it just took the air from lungs," she said. "It’s overwhelming, you become very humbled, very grateful."

Unger said they are in desperate need of windows for their home.

However, she said things are starting to look up. Electricity is back on in her home, and they finished construction on the backside of her office.

The Ungers own three companies and keep all of their personal and employee information in the office. Thankfully, none of that was destroyed or swept away.

She said she feels more fortunate than most because one of their companies is an underground utility construction company, so they quickly were able to get started on repairs.

Unger said she’s thankful to live and have grown up in Adams County because the people who live there take care of each other.

"To have people show up in a time of need means that you are truly loved," she said. "I have never felt such love in all my life other than from my parents, my husband, my children and grandchildren, my closest friends."

She said they still have a lot of work ahead of them, but it’s a journey Unger knows she won’t be walking alone.

"All the time God is good. He loves us all the time. He is never going to leave us, and he’s never going to forsake us,” she said.

DeWine also toured the Kirker Covered Bridge destroyed by the tornado. He said his team is looking into what can be done.

"We’ll certainly, we’ll be talking to the local officials about that. First, start with what they want to do and then we’ll kind of go and take a look at that," said DeWine.
