Volga River Cruises  From Moscow to St. Petersburg

Volga River cruises combine different waterways as they journey through Russia between Moscow and St. Petersburg. Itineraries begin and end in both cities, so your trip can begin on either the Neva River or the Moskva River.

If your cruise begins in Moscow, you will travel northward on the Moskva River to the Moscow Canal until your river boat meets the Volga River. Your cruise will continue along the Volga-Baltic Waterway joining three other bodies of water – Lake Onega, the Svir River and finally the Neva River by way of the Ladoga Canal. St. Petersburg is located on the Neva River.

The Bridge of the Emperor Peter I on Neva River in St. Petersburg, Russia

Cruises also begin in St. Petersburg and follow a route in the opposite direction beginning with the Neva River and ending with the Moskva River in Moscow.

Several river cruise lines offer a few itineraries on the Volga River.

Volga River Facts

The Volga River is one of several rivers that originate in the Valdai Hills of Russia – northwest of Moscow and is located entirely in Russia. It’s 2,300 miles long and is the longest river in Europe. Initially, it flows from west to east and then begins to flow in a southerly direction and eventually turning southeast before emptying into the Caspian Sea.

Part of the Volga River is included in the Volga-Baltic Waterway, which extends from Rybinsk (north of Moscow) to St. Petersburg and includes three other bodies of waters for Volga River Cruises. The major waterway is comprised of a series of canals, lakes and rivers that link the Volga River to the Baltic Sea.

It’s interesting to note that the Volga River freezes about three months out of the year.

Volga River Cruise Destinations

On a Volga River cruise, you'll travel through six different inter-connected waterways between Moscow and St. Petersburg. The course of your journey will take you along the following waterways from Moscow to St. Petersburg or the other way around:

Moskva River > Moscow Canal > Volga River > Lake Onega > Svir River > Neva River

The Volga River begins its flow into the Volga-Baltic Waterway in Rybinsk, Russia near Yaroslavl.

Lake Onega is joined by the the Volga-Baltic Waterway near Kizhi, Russia. It is the 2nd largest river in Europe.

The Svir River provides a waterway between Europe’s two largest lakes—Lake Onega and Lake Ladoga.

The Neva River is connected to the Svir River through the Ladoga Canal.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site that could be in your itinerary:

Kizhi, Russia – Kizhi Pogost - Kizhi island located on Lake Onega The pogost is a fenced-in area that includes 2 large wooden churches: the 22-dome Transfiguration Church and the 9-dome Intercession Church and a belltower.

St. Petersburg, Russia - Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments

Volga River Cruise Highlights:

  • Explore Karelia's gems: the mysterious Valaam , where for centuries truly unique examples of Russian church architecture have been preserved, and the spellbinding sight of Kizhi Island , with its renowned World Heritage-listed site - Transfiguration Church, a 22-domed structure, built in 1714 without a single nail.
  • Walk around cosy fairytale-like wooden village of Mandrogi , a tiny island that is more a living museum than a live-in village, and Goritsy , a peaceful farming town where we will enjoy an intriguing collection of ancient artefacts.
  • Watch idyllic rural life unfold along the riverbanks as your ship cruises to the provincial town of Uglich , one of the historic Golden Ring cities that form a ring to the northeast of Moscow. Step back in time and embrace olden day Russia.

Day 1 St Petersburg

Welcome to Russia! On arrival to St Petersburg, you will be met by a representative directly upon landing, and transferred to your 5* floating hotel - Mustai Karim. You will spend the evening getting to know your fellow travelers, sharing an exquisite dinner, which is served for you in the restaurant on the main deck.

Day 2 St Petersburg

A truly unique experience awaits: at night, you’ll pass under the drawn bridges of St. Petersburg. Wake up to an exciting bus tour of the Northern capital – take in the glorious architecture, glittering canals, and luxurious palaces. We will drive along Nevsky Prospekt, the city’s grand old main street, see the Kazan Cathedral and other gems of the city. Be amazed by the iconic St. Isaac's Cathedral - the second tallest Orthodox church in the world, and the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, which stands on the spot where Russia's great emperor Alexander II was mortally wounded.

After lunch, we enjoy a tour of Peterhof - the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once an opulent summer resort of the Romanovs, today Peterhof is a huge open-air museum and a testament to Peter the Great’s contribution to the city’s development. Peter's daughter, Empress Elizabeth, who ordered the expansion of the Grand Palace, greatly extended the park and the famous system of fountains, including the truly spectacular Grand Cascade. Representing nearly two centuries of European aristocratic fashion executed to the highest standards, Peterhof is like an encyclopedia of park design through the age of empire. Being amazed by Tsarist Russia, its power and infinite beauty.

Day 3 Valaam

Today we depart early for the Valaam Archipelago, a group of 50 islands in the north of Lake Lagoda, the largest lake in Europe.

We’ll spend the rest of the day exploring inside the walls of the Central Monastery Complex, where for centuries truly unique examples of Russian church architecture have been preserved, represented by the majestic Cathedral of the Transfiguration. Get acquainted with one of the most scared Orthodox sites in Russia and the site of numerous clashes between the Russians and Swedes in their struggle for power during the 16th century.

Day 4 Mandrogi

Located in a thick forest on the Svir River, famous for its towering, onion-top churches — Mandrogi was bombed out of existence by the Germans in World War II. The war left it a burnt ruin, but after the Soviet Union fell, a group of Russian investors bought the land and invited the best of the region’s woodworkers to use their creativity and traditional skills to restore the town to its former glory.

Here, you will have an opportunity to enjoy the peaceful scenery and picturesque landscape. Visit a traditional Russian village with typical wooden houses, numerous crafts exhibitions. Today’s lunch is outdoor BBQ, where you have a chance to savor Russian shashlik (kebab).

Day 5 Kizhi

Today, you’ll then spend several hours exploring Kizhi Pogost, aka the Kizhi Open Air Museum of Wooden Architecture, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990. Considered one of the greatest cultural attractions in Russia, Kizhi consists of around 80 structures from the 17th to the 19th centuries, all of which have been crafted entirely out of wood.

Among Kizhi’s many treasures is the Transfiguration Church, an architectural masterpiece featuring five tiers of 22 intricately decorated wooden domes, built in 1714 without using a single nail. The building has withstood the elements for over 150 years. You’ll then be taken to another side of Kizhi Island, where you’ll see some of the Kizhi Museum’s restoration work in action, and learn some of the secrets of traditional Russian wooden architecture.

Day 6 Goritsy

A tiny river community with a unique medieval atmosphere, Goritsy reveals a storied past within the famous Ferapontov Monastery. Marvel at paintings over 500 years old, and delve into the lives of the royals who lived there.

Here you are in the heart of Russia, in the Russian countryside with its small wooden houses surrounded by their beautiful gardens. From the ship, you can see the Resurrection Monastery, located on the river bank, which dates from the sixteen century. Almost derelict, it comes back to life, due to the devotion of strong believers.

Day 7 Uglich

Today you’ll arrive in Uglich, an ancient town filled with brightly colored architecture. Its Kremlin and the Church of St. Dmitry are particularly famous – the church’s fascinating history is tied to the life and death of Ivan the Terrible’s son. In the afternoon, relax as the sounds of Kovcheg Choir wash over you, then spend a special moment of time in a local family home.

Day 8 Moscow

After a relaxing breakfast onboard, you’ll disembark from the Mustai Karim. We hope you’ve had a wonderful journey on board with us, and we hope to see you again soon!

Moscow Cruise Route

Frequently asked questions from our travelers, what is the best time of the year to go on a moscow - st. petersburg river cruise.

The cruises are operated from the month of May until the beginning of fall. The best weather conditions during this period are usually from June through late July, but if you are looking for a trip at a more relaxed pace with less tourists in the cities on the route, we highly recommend to take a look at the months of May and September.  For more info, please see our useful tips .

Which cities and towns will I visit on a Moscow - St. Petersburg cruise?

The cruise itinerary covers all the main and the most important locations on the route. During the cruise you will have a chance to get acquainted not only with Moscow and St. Petersburg, but also with smaller towns and villages like Goritsy, Kizhi, Yaroslavl, Mandrogui. The number of cities and towns to be visited and the exact itinerary vary depending on the duration of the cruise.

Is it better to start the cruise in Moscow or in St. Petersburg?

The starting point of the cruise is totally up to you. You won’t miss any important sights whether you start the cruise in Moscow or in St. Petersburg. We always recommend checking the flight schedules from your city first in order to decide whether it is more convenient for you to fly into Moscow or St Petersburg.

A Russian Land Tour or a River cruise - which is better?

This decision completely depends on your preferred way of travelling. During the Russian river cruise you will not only visit the two largest cities of Russia, but also small towns and villages along the route and you will have a chance to participate in master classes, learn a little Russian language and dive into local Russian culture and hospitality. For those who prefer custom-made programs and more free time in the cities of their choice we recommend a land tour, both are excellent options. To find out more about the differences click here .

Do I need a visa for a Russian River Cruise?

If your citizenship is not on the list of countries with visa-free access to Russia, you will need a valid Russian visa. Please make sure to start the process in a timely manner, so as to avoid any last-minute pressure. More details on Russian Visas can be found here .

St Petersburg to Moscow river cruise

- This post may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure.

Most visitors to Russia usually head for Moscow (see this post for places to visit in Moscow ) or St Petersburg but you can also discover the delights of Russia on a river cruise between the two cities.

Russian river cruise

River cruising in Russia

It’s almost midnight on a balmy summer’s night in Russia.

The sun is a fiery ball sinking slowly behind the forested shore.

Our ship glides on Lake Ladoga leaving ripples of liquid gold in the lake to match the colour of the sky.

There’s an out-worldly calm in the air as we cruise past fishing boats towards fairytale onion-domed churches, spires, monasteries and colourful villages, towns and cities.

Long after the sun has set, the magic of the night continues to linger in the purple-pink sky.

It’s these images of midnight sunsets on the lakes and rivers that flood my mind months and years after I’ve left Russia.

moscow to st petersburg river cruise

St Petersburg to Moscow

Our cruise from St Petersburg to Moscow travels along a picturesque section of the Volga-Baltic Waterway, which flows through 1367km of lakes, rivers, reservoirs and canals that connect the Volga River to the Baltic Sea.

After spending a few days discovering the many exciting things to do in St Petersburg , we are looking forward to some tranquil time in the countryside.

Cruising the waterways allows us to unpack once and have our belongings float with us along the river.

There are several Russian river cruises to choose from.

It takes the hassle out of travelling through Russia where few people speak English and independent travel requires a lot of planning.

Each day there’s a shore excursion in a village, town or city.

A team of attentive young English-speaking men and women accompany us ashore on the buses and walking tours.

Russian river cruise

When we’re not exploring, there’s a daily programme of cultural and educational activities such as Russian language lessons, Russian history lectures, doll-painting, balalaika-playing, cooking lessons and lot os useful Russian travel tips .

The informative talks about Russian costumes, Russian tea and Russian vodka are well attended.

But the most popular session is the caviar tasting party where red and yellow caviar is served with buckwheat blini (Russian pancakes) and four kinds of Russian vodka.

From St Petersburg, the Neva River flows into Europe’s largest freshwater lake, Lake Ladoga, then into the Svir River.

After three days of grand palaces, golden-domed churches and museums in St Petersburg’s, day five allows us to relax on the water as we cruise past colourful timber houses and jewel-box churches.

At Svirstroy, we wander among villagers dressed in colourful Russian costumes selling toys, lace, hand-carved timber eggs, dolls, lacquer bowls and crochet tops.

Russian river cruise

Kizhi Island

Day six brings us to Kizhi Island, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site of timber buildings and home to the oldest wooden church in Russia, the 14th-century Church of the Resurrection of Lazarus.

Our walking tour takes us in an out of chapels, belfries, log houses, mills, bathhouses, barns and the jaw-dropping 18th-century Church of the Transfiguration with its 22 silvery onion-domed cupolas that glitter in the sun.

Russian river cruise

Those with a technical bent will enjoy the Volga Baltic canal, which is a series of locks that rise 80m (about the height of a 30-storey building) from the Lake Onega to the Kovzha River.

The river flows into Lake Beloye and Sheksna River where we dock at Goritsy and tour the nearby Kirillo-Belozersky monastery.

The monastery is a massive complex of 15th to 17th-century churches surrounded by fortress walls on the shore of Lake Siverskoye.

Inside are some of the most intricate and beautiful Christian icons I’ve seen while just outside, along the shores of the lake, are locals in skimpy clothes lying in the sun.

st petersburg ro moscow

My favourite place is Yaroslavl, a city about the size of Newcastle in NSW.

Yaroslavl is one of Russia’s oldest cities, tracing its roots back to the Vikings, and bursting with beautiful onion-domed churches that have intriguing names like Church of St Nicholas the Miracle Worker and Church of Elijah the Prophet.

We visit the Yaroslavl Museum of Russian Art, which now occupies the former governor’s residence.

Museum guides dressed in beautiful silk ball gowns lead us through the grandly furnished rooms.

At the end of the tour, we gather in the ballroom and sip sparkling wine and listen to chamber music while some of the guests dance with the guides.

Our final stop before Moscow is Uglich, a small town with a bloody history.

You wouldn’t think so looking at the picture-book Church of Prince Dmitry on the Blood with its blue domes dotted with stars.

Our guides regale us with tales of treason and murder. This is where Ivan the Terrible’s nine-year-old son Dmitry had his throat cut.

The highlight of our visit to Uglich is having breakfast with a local family. We eat millet porridge, blini and home-made jam.

Some of us get a taste for life with poor families in the countryside while others visit Soviet-era apartments in town.

Many of the hosts speak little or no English.

Then we cruise on to Moscow, where there are many more wonderful treasures to discover.

Volga River Cruise – Moscow to St. Petersburg

by Larry · November 8, 2019

After five nights and the better part of six days in Moscow , we took a tour of Moscow subway stations on our way to board our home for the next six days, the Volga Dream cruise ship. Our Volga River cruise awaits!

This post is long and covers several stops over multiple days. If you want to skip around here are some links:

Moscow Subway Stations

The volga dream, the volga river cruise route.

  • Ferapontov Monastery

Kizhi Island

  • In to St.Petersburg

From the station outside of Red Square we visited a few of the more unique subway stations on our way to the port where our ship was docked.

Svirstroy – last stop before St. Petersburg

The cruise made one final stop before St. Petersburg. I’m pretty sure it was a choice of either find a place to stop since it was halfway between Kizhi Island and St. Petersburg or keep on cruising. The description handed out by the cruise said the name meant “Construction on the Svir”, as their was a hydroelectric plant nearby. This was a cultural immersion stop, and at times it felt like a bit of over-the-top propaganda. We visited a retired lady’s house, and we visited a school where the students and teachers danced and played music.

The lady was gracious, had snacks laid out for us and invited us to ask her any questions. She shared the house with a couple of other retirees and had relocated there from St. Petersburg. Some of the same questions that were asked of our guides during the entire trip were re-asked: what did she think of Putin? how much did it cost for certain things like rent? how much freedom did she have?

volga river cruise from st. petersburg to moscow

From our perspective, our observations were our best barometer so we did not have any questions for her. Even when we ventured out of the controlled confines of the tour groups, we found the Russian people to be similar to everyone else. Some disliked the current government, some did not. Most were friendly, some were not. For the most part, we found the country extraordinarily beautiful and the people complex and enjoyable. Even when my wife and I ventured off the beaten path. we found people who were trying to enjoy life just as we were.

The music and dancing were held in the small auditorium of the school. There was one teacher and student combo that was quite good.

Svirstroy

That evening, back on the boat, was the farewell dinner, and we got a picture of the entire group we had spent the cruise with aboard the Volga Dream

Our Volga River cruise ends in St. Petersburg

At last, on July 13, we cruised up the Neva River and into St. Petersburg. The weather continued to cooperate very nicely. After seeing very little civilization along the cruise route, waking up to this was a stark contrast.

Neva River St. Petersburg

There was an obvious difference along the banks. The buildings were much more modern looking, and quite a bit more colorful.

Tips for Russia Travel

We've collected the most useful things to know about Moscow - St. Petersburg cruise and Russia travel in general.

Moscow - St. Petersburg River Tour Tips

What to pack

Russian weather is famously hard to predict, so make sure to pack a water-resistant jacket and an umbrella.

Keep in mind that most Russian have problems speaking English, so learning a few essential words won't hurt.

Rubles are the Russian currency, and it's wise to always have local money on hand during the trip.

How much to tip

Tipping is not required in Russia, but it's considered good etiquette, tip 10%-15% of your bill.

The average summer temperature in Moscow and St. Petersburg is about 18°C (64°F), so it's better to choose this season for cruising.

Some of the most popular souvenirs from Russia are, of course, matryoshka dolls, ushanka hats, and linen goods. Valenki is also an interesting choice.

The Volga Dream is the best ship for cruises!

Overall, the trip was great.

I would have liked a couple more days in St. Petersburg to visit more of the museums and other attractions. The tour of Catherine's Palace was enjoyable and our guide was excellent. Fortunately, we went into the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg the first morning we were there.

The Volga Dream Cruise met or even exceeded our expectations

I really enjoyed the trip. We were very pleased with the hotels in St. Petersburg and Moscow. The accommodations were good and the breakfasts were lavish. But the best part was that both hotels were so well located.

The guides in both cities were knowledgeable. The Hermitage was so crowded that it made it difficult to see things, but I think we saw a good selection of city sites in the limited time available for the tours. I know several people in our group spent extra days in St. Petersburg and Moscow before and after our tour, and I wish we had done the same.

Volga Dream cruise + Baltic States trip was fantastic

Volga Dream cruise + Baltic States trip was fantastic. Guides were outstanding. I was impressed that most of them had PHD or were otherwise in academia. I was also impressed with Travel All Russia's organization and responsiveness and website ease and accessibility.

Cruise with 'Travel All Russia'

My name is Mike Johansen, and I took the Cruise with 'Travel All Russia' last May from Moscow to St. Petersburg. We exchanged many e-mails with my many questions...............but now that I am home awhile and have gotten back all my photos (I still shoot with big, film camera) it is very important that I take a moment to tell you what a wonderful time I had on this particular cruise. It was not full, with weather that changed daily, and nice people from all over the world, and a great crew.
