A Review of the Go Ape Forest Segway Experience, Cheshire

Of the many Go Ape locations in the UK, we opted for glorious Delamere Forest – it meant we could combine our outdoor adventure with a cheeky shopping trip to nearby Cheshire Oaks.

As we were a little early, we headed for the delightful forest café with its indoor and outdoor seating, tasty treats and bike–hire station. There were lots of families milling around – some just starting their outdoor fun, and some looking as though they’d spent hours walking and cycling around this vast forest. 

Go Ape! occupies an area of the forest close to the café, and all visitors can walk around and see the family activities on offer: the Tree Top Adventure, Tree Top Junior and the Forest Segway. 

The Segways were quite daunting on first sight – two-wheeled machines with no brakes that we could make out. We had training in how to get on and off them, and were shown how to go forward and back and to turn corners – and most importantly, how to stop. As I practise yoga, I thought this would be easy, but though balance does play a part, it’s also about control and co-ordination. However, the instructors are great, and after a little test ride around the meeting area we were itching to get going. 

The free-riding experience starts at a slow pace – ‘turtle mode’. After a couple of minutes the group is brought to a halt, and using a gadget you have on a lanyard, you press a button to remove the ‘turtle’. Then the real ‘wind in your hair’ experience starts, although the Segways are limited to 6.5mph so you never go too fast, and the instructor is always leading the group.

The session takes in some stunning forest scenery, going up and down hills and over some rough terrain. With the overnight rain we’d had, there were a few large puddles to negotiate too. You definitely grow with confidence throughout the hour and the temptation is always there to pick up speed and overtake, but we stuck to the strict health and safety rules.

Towards the end of the session, we stopped at a fantastic photo opportunity spot. It was at this point the instructor noticed I was still in turtle mode. No wonder I’d been finding it hard to keep up with the rest of the group! Hence, it was only for the last 10 minutes that I got a feel for the real speed. We’ll certainly try a Forest Segway Experience again – if only to spend more time free of the turtle… 

Things you need to know about Forest Segways : • Wear clothing you don’t mind getting dirty. • Wear flat shoes – ideally trainers, wellies or walking boots. • Users must be over 10 years of age and weigh more than 7 stone (45kg). • Children under 16 must be supervised by an adult in their party. • Listen to and follow all the instructions given to you on the day.

Rock and roll your way around an awesome off-road trail on a futuristic segway. These innovative electric transporters use hi-tech gyroscopes which respond to body movements by speeding up or slowing down. But don't worry about the science inside it, just hop on and take off around our 160 acre site. Our beefed up machine have alloy wheels, low pressure tyres and a rugged trim that allow you to race around our woodland trails and mud paths at speed. Our cracking farmland facility provides parking for up to 50 cars, along with a cafe, changing rooms, meeting/conference facilities, catering, and toilets. We provide certificates for every participant of our time trials and rallies. This was by far the best outdoor activity we have ever done. At first our nerves were a little high, but once our instructor, Les had taught us how to operate the segways.... the fun began.... I laughed so much, I nearly cried. I can not recommend doing this enough. We will definitely be back.... and there are plenty more other activities on offer. The Secret Life of the Zoo has been one of Channel 4’s biggest hits of recent years.

The charming behind the scenes documentary gives viewers an unparalleled look at the 20,000 animals who call Chester Zoo home thanks to state of the art technology providing 24/7 coverage.

And it deservedly won a legion of fans who faithfully tuned in each week to coo over new baby elephants and follow all the usual family dramas which even the animal kingdom isn't immune to.

But there's only so much insight into what life's like at the UK's number one zoo once the gates close that you can glean from watching a TV show from the comfort of your couch – which is where the new Dawn Segway Tour comes into play.

It’s billed as your chance to get a glimpse of the early morning routines of the animals and their keepers before the zoo opens for the day – all while travelling in style on a Segway.

It kicks off at 8am with a 30 minute safety briefing and Segway driving lesson before the tour itself.

When an invitation to try it out landed in my inbox, of course I jumped at the chance.

But on the morning in question as I stood in line to mount my trusty steed and take on a seemingly daunting slalom course in the pouring rain before being let loose in the zoo itself, I wondered whether I was really cut out for this Segwaying lark.

Within just a few minutes, however, I went from gripping on to the handle bars for dear life, lurching around one corner to the next, to whizzing around the course with a smug grin on my face.

'Segway safari'

With the brilliant and hugely knowledgeable guide Robin Dutfield at the helm, we began our ‘Segway safari’ of sorts.

And our first stop ended up being the highlight of the whole tour – we were lucky enough to see one of the new baby rhinos born just a few weeks ago happily frolicking with its mum in the peace and quiet.

Next up were impala, the intriguing rock hyrax – whose closest living relative is, bizarrely, the elephant – antelope, zebra and the notoriously dangerous southern cassowary.

Then we took a turn around Islands, the £40m attraction where visitors can embark on their own expeditions through detailed recreations of South East Asian habitats.

With the rain showing no sign of stopping and the Asian songbirds doing what they do best, you could have been fooled into thinking you were actually in the middle of a Balinese monsoon.

Thanks to the Segways we were able to cover a lot of ground in our hour, even though their top speed – for safety reasons – is three miles per hour.

The wet weather might have meant some of the animals opted to keep dry indoors, but it definitely didn't dampen our spirits.

At £89 per person – which includes admission to the zoo afterwards – the cost might sound steep.

But it really does afford you a unique experience to see this magical place while the animals are at their most relaxed without all the hustle and bustle of an average day at the zoo, and to learn about some of their amazing species in a brilliantly fun way.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that every pound which goes into this charity's pockets not only helps look after the animals who live at Chester Zoo, but goes towards funding wildlife conservation projects all over the world.

Segway Safari Manchester

Our Segway Manchester experience – lots of high adrenaline thrills on a personal transporter! Calling all budding Segway riders from north Staffordshire through Cheshire and right up to Manchester these thrilling safari-style Segway sessions are challenging and great fun too.

It’s well worth travelling down from Manchester for as this Segway centre boasts a set of specially marked out trails and a tricky little obstacle course for you to get round – and all whilst balancing on your X2 Segway. Luckily this lot know what they are talking about. Not only do they organise and host these Segway riding days the team also sells and offers training on Segways so if you’re sorely tempted you can actually buy one here too!

What we really like about this location on the very outer most edge of Staffordshire is that you are actually in the middle of a working farm and the estate (complete with country house) is entirely private. And that means all 160 acres for you and your fellow Segwayers – not forgetting a few mooing cows and bleating sheep

As this venue just a few miles from the cityscape of Manchester is still very much a working farm you can expect well-used muddy tracks that will have you battling to keep the Segway upright as you twist and turn on the rutted routes. It’s exhilarating stuff and all on a chunky little two wheel electric wonder machine that silently glides along.

As we said this centre south of Manchester does have a dedicated obstacle route for Segways. If there’s time after your trek out into the wilds of deepest darkest Staffordshire this is where you’ll be glad you’ve got kitted up in full ‘body armour’ full-face helmet and knee pads as you weave in and out of the trees head over the little jumps and even take on the Segway SeeSaw.

This Segway Manchester location offers a great value for money activity that individuals pairs and even families can enjoy as the minimum age is just 12 years old. It is convenient and easily accessible by car from Liverpool, Manchester, Warrington and Chester. There is on-site parking for over 150 vehicles, including coaches. M56 (Junction 10 exit), then 9 miles along A49 towards Whitchurch or M6 (Junction 19 exit), then 11 miles along A556 towards Chester. Cuddington railway station is less than a mile away on the direct line to Manchester, Knutsford and Chester.

The Segway Experience takes place on the open grounds at  Tatton Park  one of the UKs most complete historic estates and makes for an exhilarating ride with spectacular views across the parkland.

Cheshire hotel that’s like a fancy foreign all-inclusive resort – with an adults-only spa, 210m zip line & segway safari

THERE'S a hotel in Cheshire that looks like it could be abroad, and it's popular with both holidaymakers and celebrities alike.

With summer just around the corner, plenty of people will be planning their holidays , with staycations and UK breaks becoming a popular choice among Brits.

With its sunbeds, swimming pools, adults-only spa and on-site restaurants, you'd be forgiven if you thought the Carden Park Hotel was actually in France or Spain .

Set within 1,000 acres of countryside, the Cheshire -based hotel has all the trappings of a fancy foreign hotel, including an adults-only spa and two championship golf courses.

The award-winning hotel has 197  luxury  bedrooms, including 18 luxurious suites, with both the King and Twin rooms offer views of the hotel's vast estate.

Guests who opt to stay overnight will also be given access to the Hotel Leisure Club.

Day-trippers, who are over the age of 18, can also book to use the adults-only spa without having to spend the night at the hotel.

The spa has several  features  including a panoramic sauna, an outdoor pool, outdoor hot tubs and a range of treatments too.

Other draws include a champagne garden bar, a beauty bar, and several relaxation rooms.

The hotel also has plenty of outdoor activities for families to enjoy, including a zip line , a 10m freefall jump and rock climbing facilities.

There's also an aerial adventure course as well as a Segway safari, which can be led by expert instructors.

There are also a handful of restaurants at the hotel, including an outdoor terrace and a bar, both of which have panoramic views of the estate.

The hotel has been praised by holidaymakers on  TripAdvisor , with a 4.5/5 star rating from more than 7,500 views.

One person wrote: "We had a wonderful stay in this fantastic hotel. The rooms were huge and the decor was lovely."

Another added: " An amazing stay, the garden spa is a wonderful relaxing experience. It felt like being abroad."

While a third wrote: "A lovely hotel in a splendid setting, which helps to make a stay memorable. The staff are very friendly and efficient."

Someone else said: "The best hotel I've ever stayed in - in the UK".

And it isn't just holidaymakers who flock to the spa either, celebrities have also been known to visit, including  Molly-Mae Hague  and broadcaster Louise Minchin .

The Carden Park Hotel is a 20-minute drive from Wrexham, and it's a 40-minute drive from Crewe.

Sun Online Travel have found overnight stays at the Carden Park Hotel from £149 per room.

And the Carden Park Hotel isn't the only hotel in the UK that wouldn't look out of place in Europe .

While destinations across Southern  Germany , Western  Austria  and the  Czech Republic  are known for their beer bathing pastime, a hotel in the UK is set to embrace the European activity.

Set within eight acres of private grounds, The Norfolk Mead Hotel in Coltishall is a Georgian country house that's home to several treatment rooms.

The Norfolk hotel will become the first place in the UK where Brits can enjoy a  beer spa  experience when its new treatment rooms open later this year.

Guests will be able to "immerse" themselves in a wooden hot tub that will be filled with vitamin-rich malt and hops.

Meanwhile, Sun Online's writers recently revealed  some of the spa getaways  that they have enjoyed across the country.

Lifestyle Editor Catherine Bennion-Pedley found some R&R in  the north-west  with her husband and kids at the Carden Park Hotel, Cheshire.

All overnight guests can use the indoor pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi in the hotel itself, and take a walk through the on-site vineyard.

The spa has a salt steam room, a tepidarium, a Finnish sauna and some vitality pools among other treatments on offer.

Gloucestershire

Senior Video Producer Rachael Clarke and boyfriend Stuart visited The Greenway Hotel & Spa - a countryside bolt-hole near  Cheltenham .

The 16th Century Elizabethan manor is set in eight acres of countryside, providing the perfect environment to relax in.

Guests can chill in its indoor thermal pool or outdoor hot tub - or hop between the sauna, sanarium and steam room.
