The Best Cross-country U.S. Road Trip Itinerary: Northern Route
Here are nine stops you shouldn't miss as you drive across the country — plus what to do and where to eat while you’re there.
Ken Stanback / Getty Images
Nothing beats the experience-of-a-lifetime exhilaration of a cross-country road trip. If you're looking to get lost in adventure and pristine natural beauty, string along a coast-to-coast route that connects these nine destinations. We've mapped out the most quintessential places to check out as you venture across the northern half of the U.S. from the Pacific Northwest to the Northeast. The best part? There's no exact science to it, so feel free to begin your journey from whichever coast you prefer and add your own stops. Here are the places you shouldn't miss along the way.
Gautier Houba / Travel + Leisure
Before you depart Seattle, which is known for its skyline featuring the iconic Space Needle, swing by Pike Place Market to pick up a coffee from the Storyville Coffee Company and some fresh pastries from Honest Biscuits or The Crumpet Shop. About a 30-minute drive from downtown Seattle, Snoqualmie Falls is a great place to stop for a brief hike, with exceptional views and a stunning 268-foot waterfall. If you're starting your trip from the East Coast, Seattle will be your final stop, so we'd suggest an overnight stay at Inn at the Market — if only for the views of Pike Place and the tranquil waterfront. Save room for the all-day breakfast at Bacco Cafe , one of the three restaurants at this hotel.
Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
A lakefront dining experience is a must for any visit to Coeur d'Alene. Terraza Waterfront Cafe offers Latin American fusion cuisine and its prime location will ensure you enjoy beautiful views of Lake Coeur d'Alene. After thoroughly soaking up your surroundings and checking out the local shops, pay a visit to Seven Stars Alpaca Ranch for a guided tour with friendly alpacas as you escort them to their daytime pasture.
West Glacier, Montana
Known for its lodging as much as its white-water rafting, kayaking, and fly-fishing opportunities, the Great Northern Resort makes a great base for visiting Glacier National Park . Located near the West Glacier entrance, the property offers cozy log cabins, complete with a kitchen and fireplace, and a hotel for visitors seeking more traditional accommodations. As you depart for the park from West Glacier, head toward Going-to-the-Sun Road . Once inside, spend some time taking in views of picturesque Lake McDonald .
Jackson, Wyoming
The natural beauty of America's first national park needs no introduction — colorful hot springs, gushing geysers, and cascading waterfalls are synonymous with Yellowstone. Make time to watch the famed Old Faithful Geyser erupt and visit the brilliantly colored Grand Prismatic Spring (pictured above). As you wander through the park, keep an eye out for roaming wildlife such as bison, bighorn sheep, elk, moose, deer, and black bears. After exploring all of Yellowstone's natural wonders, spend the night at Spring Creek Ranch back in Jackson.
Rapid City, South Dakota
In South Dakota, the scenic drive through Black Hills National Forest will leave you feeling in complete awe of your natural surroundings. Stay at the Bavarian Inn , about a 40-minute drive from Mount Rushmore National Memorial , one of the most iconic monuments in the U.S. Once you've taken enough photos of the four presidents' impressive 60-foot faces, head into Rapid City for a bite and some local beer at Murphy's Pub & Grill . Continue your journey east through Badlands National Park , home to a surreal landscape featuring otherworldly rock formations and plenty of scenic lookout points, all along a 39-mile loop .
Minneapolis
Johnny Nguyen/Travel + Leisure
Spend some time meandering through the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden , which showcases more than 60 pieces, before venturing over the Stone Arch Bridge, a former railroad bridge that crosses the Mississippi River. Stay at Hotel Ivy in downtown Minneapolis for a taste of Midwest-style luxury. Grab dinner at Spoon and Stable for French-inspired cuisine by a James Beard award-winning chef, or dine at Murray's , a classic Minneapolis steakhouse. Afterward, stop by Union Rooftop for cocktails with a skyline view.
Jumping Rocks / Universal Images Group / Getty Images
This vibrant city is home to awe-inspiring skyscrapers, urban beaches along Lake Michigan, and a bustling food scene. After taking time to admire the Cloud Gate sculpture at Millennium Park, make your way to Navy Pier for some sightseeing before boarding an architecture-themed river cruise , arguably one of the best things to do in Chicago . Then, dine at Au Cheval , a diner-style eatery known for its gourmet take on a classic burger. Or head to Cindy's Rooftop , a scenic spot atop the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel featuring seasonal menus and inventive cocktails. Stay at the LondonHouse hotel to enjoy views of the river and the city around you.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Once you arrive in Steel City, check into the Kimpton Hotel Monaco in downtown Pittsburgh, a sophisticated homage to the area's creative scene. If time allows, plan a visit to The Andy Warhol Museum , where you can learn all about the artist's life and work. Point State Park — a National Historic Landmark located at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers — is just a five-minute drive (or a 15-minute walk) from the hotel. As for dining, head to the Original Oyster House , the oldest bar and restaurant in Pittsburgh, open since 1870.
New York City
Congratulations, you made it! Celebratory drinks are in order, and what better place for them than the Daintree Rooftop and Lounge at Hotel Hendricks ? After checking into your swanky Midtown room, complete with stunning views of the Empire State Building, make your way to nearby Bryant Park for a midday stroll. If you're in search of a classic New York bagel, look no further than Ess-a-Bagel , located right around the corner on West 32nd Street. For dinner, indulge in a comforting Italian meal at Max in Tribeca or Via Carota in the West Village.
If you're beginning your cross-country trip from the East Coast, New York City will be your first stop, so be sure to do some classic Big Apple sightseeing. Go for a walk in Central Park, see a Broadway show, or check out the view from the top of the Empire State Building before heading west.

How This Courageous Couple Is Bringing A 1970s Ski Resort Back To Life
After buying a forgotten North Carolina ski area, Deb and David Hatley faced a mountain of monumental challenges. Now they’re just praying for snow.

Deb Hatley and her husband, David, bought 500 acres of North Carolina hill country and are turning a forgotten ski area into Hatley Pointe, a boutique mountain resort.
If you’ve ever dreamed about owning your own ski mountain, you might want to chat with Deb and David Hatley first. In 2023, the entrepreneurial Tennessee couple acquired a defunct ski resort on 500 acres in Mars Hill, North Carolina, and set out to transform it into a chic “boutique” ski area. After a massive renovation, Hatley Pointe Mountain Resort is scheduled to open this November.
With a fortune earned by manufacturing hot tubs and golf carts, the Hatleys purchased the 70s-era resort, formerly known as Wolf Ridge, for $8.4 million, from the resort’s longtime owner Orville English. They then invested an additional $12 million in capital improvements, from a complete overhaul of the lodge, to upgrading the ski patrol buildings and modernizing and curating retail outlets throughout.
It certainly hasn’t been all s’mores and hot toddies by the fire. Ancient snowmaking systems needed replacement, walls came down, and essential machinery—like the main ski lift—turned out to be completely inoperable.
Former owner of Wolf Ridge Orville English (left) with Deborah Hatley, new owner and CEO of Hatley Pointe. Hatley and her husband, David, paid $8.4 million for the forgotten 500-acre ski area in North Carolina. That's when the challenges began.
Along the way to fixing the infrastructure problems, Deb Hatley became an unwitting social media star, as her TikTok reels showcasing the resort transformation went viral. A few of her videos have views in the millions across social media platforms.
Deb Hatley has become an unwitting TikTok star as she documents the transformation of Hatley Pointe Resort.
The closest ski area to both Asheville, North Carolina, and Northeast Tennessee, Hatley Pointe peaks at 4,700 feet and has 15 trails on 54 acres of skiable terrain, with a vertical drop of 700 feet.
Although the resort was unable to meet its projected opening date last season, this year is looking good. Weather permitting, inaugural day is set for November 28, 2024.
Here’s my conversation with the resort’s owner and CEO Deb Hatley.
David Hochman: Your TikTok called “ Three Things to Do When You Purchase a 1970s Ski Resort in North Carolina ” got more than 3M views. So tell us—what are those three things?
Deb Hatley: First, you’ll need to upgrade the water capacity to improve snowmaking. Global warming has hit ski resorts hard, especially on the East Coast, and we rely on manufactured snow now, which takes a lot of energy and serious water pressure. When we bought the resort in March 2023, we realized a huge overhaul was needed to maximize snowmaking capacity, and a big part of our investment went into that.
Tractors and graders and diggers, oh my! In addition to the $8.4 million land purchase, the Hatleys invested another $12 million in capital improvements to open Hatley Pointe.
Second, regrade slopes that haven’t been open in over 10 years! Many slopes didn’t have proper lighting, safe electrical, or adequate pipelines. So, we ripped out everything that was broken, regraded the slopes, and reopened some of the best terrain on the mountain.
And finally, keep your head up and be patient. Patience has been key for us. It’s gotten me through the toughest days and helps me stay focused on the big picture and the honor of creating something so special. We’re in it for the long haul, and patience has been our best asset.
Hatley Pointe has 54 acres of skiable terrain, with a vertical drop of 700 feet.
David Hochman: 2024 has been a whirlwind for the travel industry. What’s been your biggest lesson in navigating everything from fluctuating weather to rising costs while still building a mountain oasis?
Deb Hatley: We quickly realized the best way to manage costs was to build an in-house team, and that decision alone saved us hundreds of thousands of dollars. Weather’s been tough—we’ve worked in everything from ankle-deep rain in the spring to waist-deep snow in winter. We’ve literally weathered every storm together, and it’s been a team effort the whole way.
David Hochman: What’s been your biggest ‘What have we gotten ourselves into?’ moment since taking over the resort? Any renovation horror stories where you just had to laugh to keep from crying?
Deb Hatley: Oh, where do I start? Should I talk about the time we pulled down the walls and realized the place was structurally unsound? Or the 60-year-old pipelines that couldn’t handle the pressure needed for snowmaking?
The scariest moment, though, was discovering a year into this project that one of our three chairlifts would never spin again. To make matters worse, the main lift—which we were counting on to handle most of the mountain’s capacity—was deemed inoperable unless we rebuilt major structural components. So, that’s exactly what we did. Many dollars later, we now have two safe, operational lifts, and we’re adding a new one soon.
David Hochman: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve found from the old Wolf Ridge resort?
Deb Hatley: There’s a long list, but the strangest might be the pump station. They had welded motors onto a truck chassis and cantilevered it over a pond. It was creative, but far from sustainable. We ended up demolishing it and rebuilding from scratch with a proper structure and five powerful motors that now push 3,500 gallons per minute up our new 16-inch steel pipeline.
Small but mighty, Hatley Point will open with 15 trails, but with a plan to expand.
David Hochman: Imagine Hatley Pointe becomes the go-to spot for celebrity vacations—who would be your dream guest, and what snow activities would you plan for them?
Deb Hatley: I’d love to see Joanna and Chip Gaines here. Joanna’s been a huge inspiration for me, especially as a woman in design and development. I can picture her and her family enjoying the lodge and all the little details we’ve worked on, and of course, some good old-fashioned southern hospitality. And I’d definitely plan a friendly race between her and Chip to see who could make it down the mountain first—just like my husband and I did when we first visited the resort.
David Hochman: Hatley Pointe promises incredible hospitality—what’s the one small detail or service you’re adding that you think will really ‘wow’ your guests?
Deb Hatley: From the moment you arrive, we’ve got private guest transportation dropping you off right at the front of the lodge. There’s a welcome desk to answer all your questions, a full-service restaurant and bar, and a specialized lounge with showers, private changing rooms, and weekend locker spaces. Every step of the experience will be packed with attention to detail and real care for our guests.
David Hochman: What’s your strategy for making Hatley Pointe stand out as a year-round destination? Are you already planning summer activities or festivals to keep the momentum going after ski season?
Deb Hatley: Our mission is to create a four-season mountain resort with tons of amenities and outdoor activities. We’re talking mountain ziplines, rock climbing, mountain biking, ski-in/ski-out accommodations, and real estate options, from homes to boutique hotels. We’re already working on the mountain bike park, and phase one should be done by September 2025. And yes, we’ve got summer and fall festivals lined up—if there’s one thing we know how to do, it’s throw a party!
