The Best Attractions, Activities & Things To Do in Panama City Beach (PCB) Florida

1. indulge at the the yard milkshake bar.

How’d you like a milkshake with a whole cupcake sticking out of the top or an entire waffle peeking out of a mound of whipped cream? At The Yard Milkshake Bar , you will not believe your eyes as you are dazzled with some of the craziest treats. They’re not just for kids!  Whether you choose the Cookie Monster (that was my choice), the Cereal Killer or any of the other decadent desserts, I dare you to eat the whole thing.

Tip: We went at around 12:30 p.m. on a Sunday, and the line was about a half-hour long (with a 20 minute wait after ordering). But, by the time we left the place at around 2 p.m., there was no line at all.

2. Get an Epic View from the SkyWheel Ferris Wheel

Get ready for your breath to be taken away with the spectacular view of Panama City Beach on board the 53-meter SkyWheel ! The gondola ride offers a relaxing experience and is perfect for taking that Instagram-worthy photo (or video!).

If you want to bring things up a notch, their VIP pass gives you free drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), double the flight time, and the chance to ride their VIP gondola. It has a glass-bottom floor, giving you more opportunities to take that perfect shot!

3. Take a Boat Ride to Shell Island

Shell Island is a seven-mile island on the Florida Emerald Coast with picturesque white sand beaches. It’s fun for locals and visitors of Panama City Beach to rent a pontoon and spend the day enjoying the sand and sun. Plus, there’s a strong possibility of seeing some dolphins along the way!

It is a beautiful barrier island punctuated with magnificent sand dunes and coastal sage scrub. The beach is flourishing with creatures, including shorebirds, turtles and deer. While there, I found lots of shells (of course), plenty of secluded spots to relax and even a starfish — the perfect way to spend a lazy day.

Our transportation to the island was provided by Lagoon Pontoon . We stocked it with goodies for lunch, plenty of drinks (a cooler filled with Fresca!) and the beach essentials. They provided the coolest ride with all the safety accouterments onboard and two slides that attached to the back.

4. Believe It or Not at Ripley’s

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! is the go-to place in Panama City Beach for those who want to explore the strange and unbelievable. Their ‘Odditorium’ houses bizarre exhibits from around the globe that people of all ages will enjoy.

Their 7D Moving Theater provides an immersive experience with its 3D movies and motion seats. The Marvelous Mirror Maze will challenge your eyes with its maze of infinity mirrors, with a treasure waiting at the end. If you’re up to the challenge, the Impossible Laser Race will test your skills in navigating your way through laser beams like in spy movies.

In the words of Dean Cain: Unbelievable? Believe it!

5. Get a Finn’s Original Fish Taco

It’s always taco time at Finn’s Island Style Grub , home of Finn’s original fish tacos. The ahi taco and their signature fish taco are some of the best, but there are plenty of others to choose from at this food-truck-style eatery. While you’re waiting for your order, pop into their barista bar next door and order a Black Salt Mocha. You won’t be disappointed!

Dolphins and sunsets — it doesn’t get much better than that. Grab a drink and a snack, then end the evening with a beautiful sunset across the emerald waters.

The theme park features different rides like the Swamp Ape, Eye of the Kraken, and much more. Feeling a bit more competitive? You can also try the Marrakesh Road Rally and race against other people around the track in different race modes. And did I mention that you can have a Mario Kart-like experience in their Power-Up race mode?

Note: they are only open seasonally, so check their website before your visit!

11. Get Donuts at the Iconic Thomas’ Donuts & Snack Shop

Forget the breakfast omelettes and pancakes, because at the family-owned Thomas’ Donuts & Snack Shack it’s all about the fluffy dunkers. It is a haven for donut lovers! They have everything from the classic glazed to key lime filled. I can vouch for the red velvet cake. And the chocolate sprinkle. And the cinnamon twist. Don’t judge.

They also serve a handful of other breakfast items, like muffins, biscuits and breakfast sandwiches.

FYI: There is almost always a line in the morning, so get there really early or plan on waiting. We arrived at 10: a.m. on the weekend, and the queue was about 20 people deep.

13. Walk Russell-Fields City Pier

The Russell-Fields City Pier sits at the end of Pier Park and stretches 1,500 feet out into the Gulf of Mexico. You can pay a small fee ($3) to be able to take the short stroll to the end. It is worth it!

You can also get a nice view of the pier (and some great fish tacos) by sitting on the patio of Hook’d Pier Bar & Grill.

14. Go Sightseeing at Sea Dragon Pirate Cruise

Board the Sea Dragon on a voyage with Capt. “Fearless” Phil and his friendly pirate crew! Though the activities on board are more geared towards kids, adults will enjoy the whole sightseeing tour from start to finish. If you are lucky, you will get to see dolphins as well!

For a more scenic experience, you can book the sunset cruise (which costs a few extra dollars). Yummy snacks like hotdogs & candies and drinks for both kids and adults are available on the ship.

15. Do a Tasting at Panama City Beach Winery

Panama City Beach Winery specializes in fruit wines and is the only registered citrus winery in the United States. Their wines are made with 100 percent real fruit and no added sugar to the finish. Their blackberry wine literally has four pounds of blackberries in every bottle!

Stop by for a free tasting and take a bottle (or two) back to the beach with you. Don’t miss trying the Key Lime wine — it was my favorite and has won a number of awards!

16. Take a Panama City Beach Helicopter Tour

If there is one thing that makes Panama City Beach worth returning to, it’s the helicopter tours. The views on the ground and the sea are already spectacular, but seeing Panama City Beach up in the air provides a different perspective of its beauty and splendor.

If you haven’t tried riding a helicopter before, now is your chance to do so! You can also try a wildlife helicopter tour if you want something a little different. You’ll be able to see turtles, stingrays, and even sharks! They’ll get you close enough to see the magnificent creatures while also keeping enough distance as not to disturb them.

Panhandle Helicopters has a variety of tours for you to choose from!

17. Have Fun at Pier Park

Pier Park is the place to shop the beachy boutiques, get fruity drinks (served in a pineapple!) and indulge in beachfront restaurants. It has the whole package. There are more than 120 retail stores where you can buy clothes, shoes, accessories and even furniture. Plus, if you are a fan of Ferris wheels, you can get a whole new perspective of Florida’s Panama City Beach on the Skywheel that soars 200 feet above Pier Park. You can see for miles!

If you want to explore the Pier Park at a leisurely pace, then I suggest you go early in the morning before it gets too busy and hot.

If you’d like to know more about what Pier Park has to offer, check out the Panama City Beach (PCB) visitors website .

Brunch is a popular thing to do almost anywhere in the States, but especially in Panama City Beach. People love some good grub before hitting the beach, and the city has plenty of options. Andy’s Flour Power has all the brunch favorites made with the freshest ingredients, but they are known for their French toast—and it’s to die for! If you are looking for a killer eggs Benedict, then head over to Liza’s Kitchen who puts it on their homemade double-proofed focaccia bread.

20. Break Free at Escape Manor

Invite your family or friends and unleash your inner Sherlock at this escape room-type game at Escape Manor ! Their Panama City Beach site has three different missions to choose from, each with its unique story and mystery. Is your team capable of escaping before the timer runs out?

Whether you are a fan of mysteries or you just want to have a unique experience with your loved ones, Escape Manor will keep you coming back for more!

21. Do a Double-Take of the Upside Down Building

WonderWorks is an amusement park that combines education and entertainment. Inside you can feel the power of a 71 mph hurricane and make life-sized bubbles. But, you don’t even need to go inside to get a little taste of the fun. The exterior is built like an upside down building, and it’s worth at least a drive-by. You can kill two birds with one stone because right across the street is a ginormous ship replica that is home to Ripley’s Believe it or Not.

22. Swim at Panama City Beach

Take a splash in the different beaches around Panama Beach City. Some popular ones to go to are Camp Helen State Park, St. Andrews State Park (perfect for kids!), and Laguna Beach. Most of the beaches in the area are also open for different activities like kayaking and snorkeling.

Aside from the beaches, Panama City Beach’s resorts, hotels, and condos have some of the best pools in the state. Choose from huge pools with waterslides, a lazy river, and a poolside grill/bar to peaceful, boutique pools where the only sound is the air rustling the palm trees.

23. Explore the Pretty Parks

St. Andrews State Park is surrounded by water — the Gulf on one side and the bay on the other. You can either enjoy a relaxing sunbathe on the beach, explore the dunes or walk one of the two nature trails. The 180-acre Camp Helen State Park is also bordered by the gulf, in addition to Lake Powell. It is one of the largest coastal dune lakes in Florida with plenty of activities. Have fun searching for wildlife, swimming, fishing and strolling around the refurbished textile mill buildings. If hiking is your main goal for the day, then the 24 miles of unpaved trails at Conservation Park is a must (bikers can also enjoy the 2900-acre park!).

24. Take a Dip at Pitt and Sylvan Springs

The crystal clear waters of Pitt and Sylvan Springs is enough invitation to get in and take a swim. Surrounded by trees and other vegetation, with birds flying about every now and then, you’ll see why it draws in visitors all year round.

Aside from swimming, you can also rent a canoe and explore around the spring. You and your loved ones can also enjoy a picnic at designated areas while enjoying the ambiance of nature.

25. Get Wet at the Shipwreck Island Waterpark

If you want a break from the beautiful beaches, awaken your inner child at the Shipwreck Island Waterpark. Boasting amazing waterslides, wave pools, and lazy rivers, the tropical water park is one of the most fun attractions in Panama City Beach. Their 500,000-gallon Ocean Motion Wave pool creates three foot waves to splash around in or you can opt to meander down the lazy river. If you are more of a thrill-seeker, don’t miss the Pirate’s Plunge and Tree Top Drop waterslides.

26. Swim with Dolphins at Water Planet

If you are fond of dolphins, definitely go ahead and swim with them on Water Planet in Panama City Beach. They offer a range of exciting and educational swim-with-the-dolphin tours for the whole family. This includes the chance to explore Shell Island, snorkel on shipwrecks, and collect shells.

They offer 1 day, 3-day, or 1-week programs which blend the natural beauty of a dolphin encounter that some people call the most moving encounter they ever had. Children with special needs also benefit from their dolphin therapeutic program.

27. Ride Go Carts

Take a spin on the fastest, tallest and steepest go-kart track in Panama City Beach, Race City . They have tracks for every level of speedster, from a lil’ speedy to a pro. This Northern California girl is especially fond of the Golden Gate track, a 40 foot replica of the breathtaking bridge whose original is in my neck of the woods.

28. Take a Day Trip to Mexico Beach

Though Mexico Beach might have a small-town feel to it, there are many fascinating places to go to and engaging activities to do on your day trip. Shelling, watching the dolphins frolic at sunset, and taking a refreshing swim are just some of the popular activities for visitors and locals.

Mexico Beach is also a haven for watersports of all types, which include boating, sailing, and kayaking, to name a few. Locally-owned businesses and antiques also offer a variety of souvenirs.

29. Play Putt Putt Golf at Coconut Creek

Panama City Beach Florida is more than pristine white sand beaches (though that is enough to bring you there, isn’t it?), there are fun attractions for family members of every age (not just the kids). And who doesn’t love a fierce game of putt putt golf?  At Coconut Creek you will get the African safari vibe with the two 18-hole courses. But, that’s not all! You can also challenge your navigational skills with their Gran Maze, a huge human labyrinth that is the size of a football field!

30. Take an Airboat Tour at Gator Country Alligator Park

Gator Country Alligator Park (also known as Airboat Adventures) will give you a heart-pounding experience from start to finish. You’ll feel the rush of adrenaline as you coast the rivers and marshlands of West Bay Creek on an airboat tour. You will also get a chance to pet and feed cute baby alligators, as well as seeing adult alligators and other animals like bald eagles and herons.

There is nothing to worry about, though! The whole crew is friendly and will make you feel safe all throughout the tour.

Book your airboat ride here: Airport Ride from Panama City Beach or at Airboat Adventures / Swampvette .

Hope we’ve helped you add more things to do in Panama City Beach! From one-of-a-kind indoor activities to fun outdoor experiences, this place will surely not disappoint. Then it is just about 15-20 minutes to Panama City Beach You can easily check for the best fare deals at Skyscanner , which also has the option to choose ‘cheapest month’ as the departure to find the lowest priced dates to fly to your destination. For driving directions see the Panama City Beach website . Where to Stay in Panama City Beach: Panama City Beach is a beachfront town, so it’s of course best to stay close to the beach. I stayed in a seaside condo at Seychelles Beach Resort by Wyndham Vacation Rentals and it was perfectly located, plus had its own pool and a full kitchen.

Hampton Inn & Suites Beachfront (moderate) is a great choice if you are looking for more of a hotel than condo. For something on the less expensive side, try the Carillon Beach Resort Inn (budget). Also search some great deals on hotels of your choice at Booking.com . If you’re looking for more of a home atmosphere (or are traveling with a group of people), head over to VRBO that has houses, apartments and even just a room for rent in every price range.

Getting Around: Renting a car in Panama City Beach is the best to really experience the island and RentalCars.com has some great deals. If you are not renting a car, there are a few other options. It is possible to get around by taxi, but that can get quite expensive (especially if you want to check all the things to do in Panama City Beach off this bucket list). If you have more time, another choice would be the Bay Town Trolly which runs between the beaches for $1.50 per trip (or $4.00 for a day pass).

I will keep this in mind for Florida trip. Thanks for the list

Yes! Love this! PCB baby!

I used to live in Florida and I honestly I had no idea that PCB had so much to offer. I especially appreciate the tips like time-wait, etc. So helpful!! Thank you.

Thank you for sharing! I have been to PCB several times in past years and it has always been one of my favorite beaches to visit! Thank you for the tips! I, too, was not aware of all of the attractions available to visitors!

PCB definitely has some of the most beautiful US Gulf Coast beaches. Love thee sand there.

I’m not sure when the last time you were on Shell Island, but we were just there a few weeks ago, and did NOT find one shell. Very disappointing. We walked about a 1/2 mile and nothing. :(

Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear that. I was there a couple years ago and found many. Thanks for letting me know!

10 Best Things To Do in Panama City Beach

Updated Mar. 7, 2023

Panama City Beach's sugar white sand is what primarily attracts families, couples and spring breakers year after year. But this vacation haven isn't just for beach bums. Outdoor adventurers will have plenty of land to explore at Conservation

  • All Things To Do

must visit places in panama city beach

St. Andrews State Park St. Andrews State Park

St. Andrews State Park has enough attractions and activities to keep every member of your family happy. Along with a nearly 2-mile-long white sand beach, the park also boasts paved bike trails, marked hiking trails, water sports equipment rentals (including canoes, kayaks and snorkeling gear) and shuttle boat tours to Shell Island, a 7-mile long undeveloped barrier island. Additionally, the park provides a concession stand with snacks, souvenirs and fishing supplies.

Recent visitors described the park as beautiful and praised the clean beach and facilities. Reviewers said the park can get quite crowded on the weekends and advised visiting during the week if your itinerary allows. And keep your eyes peeled for plenty of wildlife: travelers said there was a lot of activity in and out of the water from local animals like alligators, heron, ibis and white tail deer.

Beaches Beaches free

With 27 miles of beaches and nearly 100 access points, PCB is a beach bum's paradise. You won't have a difficult time finding a stretch of sand to park your towel; in fact, you may have a harder time deciding on what shoreline to relax.

If you want to stay close to the downtown area, head to Front Beach Road. From here, you'll find a bevy of convenient Panama City Beach access points and street parking. To experience Florida's coastal beauty at its most natural, hop a shuttle boat to Shell Island . This barrier island off of St. Andrews State Park is undeveloped with few crowds and a peaceful atmosphere, according to recent visitors. Plus, it's a haven for dolphins. For even more undeveloped land, head to Camp Helen State Park, which sits on the far western border of Panama City Beach. Along with a quiet beach, it's also home to trails that snake through dunes and scrub oak forests, not to mention a rare dune lake.

Panama City Beach Dolphin Tours Panama City Beach Dolphin Tours

Though you can see and interact with dolphins at the Gulf World Marine Park , locals and visitors will tell you: there's nothing like observing them in the wild. Dolphin tours are a popular to-do in Panama City Beach, and often described by travelers as their favorite experience in PCB.

Similar to the area's fishing charters , there are a variety of dolphin tours to choose from. If you want a more intimate wildlife-viewing experience, consider Dolphin and Snorkel Tours , which limits the number of guests on its boats to six people. The company also guarantees dolphin sightings because of its location at the Bay Point Marina (the closest marina to Shell Island , which is where dolphins are usually spotted). These tours, which typically last three hours, also include snorkel gear in case you'd like to get in the water to explore more.

Shell Island Shell Island

If you need a break from the crowds in Panama City Beach, consider making the short trip to Shell Island. This 7-mile-long barrier island runs east to west between the Gulf of Mexico and the St. Andrew Bay. Because it's undeveloped, you'll find plenty of coastal creatures and untouched vegetation, plus miles of pearly white sand to sink your toes into. While recent visitors said the natural setting was a relaxing reprieve from the busy, commercialized feel of the mainland, it isn't without a few drawbacks. Shell Island has no restrooms, concession stands, trash receptacles, picnic tables or shade pavilions, meaning you'll need to come with everything you need (and take it back with you when you head back across the bay).

To get around the fact that the island hosts no facilities, many travelers choose to hop on a charter to the island. This option offers the best of both worlds: You'll have access to food, drinks and a restroom on the boat, and still be able to play in the island's shallow waters.

Conservation Park Conservation Park free

When you're ready to explore more of PCB's nature, head to Conservation Park. As a safeguard for wetlands, wildlife and pine forest, the park is a natural filter, balancing treated water before it travels to the St. Andrews Bay. This nearly 3,000-acre park features 12 different trails of varying difficultly and eight boardwalks totaling more than a mile in length. Bring binoculars – you'll likely spot plenty of birds and wildlife in the wetlands area.

According to recent visitors, the park's well-maintained, flat trails are perfect for hiking or biking. One word of caution from reviewers: Bring plenty of sunscreen and water. Though some said the park was a bit out of the way compared to other top attractions (it's about 10 miles west of downtown Panama City Beach and best reached by car), travelers also enjoyed that its location away from the beach crowds made it incredibly peaceful.

Shipwreck Island Waterpark Shipwreck Island Waterpark

Consistently described by visitors as a great place for families, Shipwreck Island Waterpark is a 20-acre facility that features a wave pool, a lazy river, several water slides and flumes, and two shallow pools perfect for novice swimmers. True to its name, it's also home to a replica of a 17th-century sailing ship that allows swimmers to zip line off the ship before dropping into a large lagoon pool. Along with the rides, the park also boasts concessions (though reviewers were not as impressed with the food as they were the attractions).

Recent travelers said the park was a great place to spend a day with the kids and said it never felt too crowded. Visitors particularly praised the facilities available for little swimmers and said a day here is worth the ticket price.

Fishing Charters Fishing Charters

As with other coastal Florida cities, Panama City Beach is a prime spot for both avid and novice anglers to cast a line. Though you can fish from the piers along the beach and at St. Andrew Bay or directly from the shore (with the proper fishing license), there are also several charter companies that can transport you out into the Gulf of Mexico (perfect for if you want to try your hand at deep-sea fishing).

Along with their fishing skills and knowledge of the area, most charter captains or operators will provide all fishing equipment (including bait and tackle) and the licenses you need to fish in area waters. Choose your charter company based on how serious you are about fishing. For instance, some companies like The Reel Contender Fishing Charters allow just five anglers on board with trips lasting between five and 10 hours. In contrast, companies like Jubilee Deep Sea Fishing , which describes itself as a "party fishing boat," may be better suited for more casual anglers. Capt. Anderson's Marina is another company favored by recent travelers.

Pier Park Pier Park free

PCB is first and foremost a beach destination. But when you need a break from the sun and surf (or if some clouds thwart your plans), the area has a bevy of attractions to keep you entertained away from the shoreline. Case in point: Pier Park. An outdoor retail, dining and entertainment hub, Pier Park is home to familiar chain restaurants like Olive Garden, Subway and Five Guys, along with popular stores like Charming Charlie, Dillard's and Old Navy, among others. When you need a reprieve from shopping, head to Pier Park Amusements, the on-site theme park (a hit with recent visitors). It features a giant slide, a small roller coaster and a free-fall ride, along with more gentle attractions for young children

Along with the variety of stores and activities, visitors particularly liked how clean and safe the area is.

Gulf World Marine Park Gulf World Marine Park

If you love dolphins, you'll want to schedule a stop at Gulf World Marine Park. Though the park houses several other species, including sea turtles, stingrays, sharks and sea lions, dolphins are the main attraction here, and one of the major reasons visitors recommend spending a few hours at the park. Similar to SeaWorld, the Gulf World Marine Park hosts animal shows (dolphins and sea lions are the only animals that perform), feeding demonstrations and opportunities to swim with the dolphins and interact with the park's other residents, including a variety of birds and reptiles.

Aside from the animals, recent visitors were also impressed with the knowledgeable trainers and said this attraction was a hit with the kids. If you need a rainy day activity, reviewers said this would be a solid choice. And if you're willing to splurge, travelers said swimming with the dolphins was an unforgettable experience.

Ripley's Believe It or Not! Ripley's Believe It or Not!

Though Ripley's isn't unique to Panama City Beach, it is a favorite rainy day activity among families with young kids. Inside, you'll find oddities like shrunken heads, one-of-a-kind artwork and other interesting artifacts synonymous with the Ripley name. Along with the hands-on displays, this outpost is also home to a 7-D moving theater, the LaserRace Challenge and a mirror maze, if you're willing to pay extra.

14 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Panama City Beach, FL

Written by Lana Law Updated Dec 25, 2023

Turquoise waves lapping at the gleaming white-sand beaches lining the oceanfront of Panama City Beach create a picture-perfect summer scene. From spring until fall, this small city on the Florida Panhandle is transformed into a true American beach town.

Families flock here from the inland areas of Florida and nearby states to lounge on the beaches and enjoy the numerous attractions and activities found here.

Since this is largely a summer resort area, most of the attractions are outdoors or water-related, and many of them are only open seasonally. Winter in Panama City Beach is quiet but has a more relaxed feel.

Start your trip with our list of things to do in Panama City Beach.

Spend a Day on the Beach

Wander through pier park, take a ride on the skywheel, walk on russell-fields pier, gulf world marine park, st. andrews state park and shell island, go boating, kayaking, canoeing, and stand up paddleboarding, ripley's believe it or not, shipwreck island park, coconut creek family fun park, water planet, panama city beach (pcb) conservation park, wonderworks panama city beach, panama city beach, fl - climate chart.

The Beach

Panama City's beautiful beach is the centerpiece of the city and loved by locals and tourists of all ages, who come here to swim, play, relax, socialize, and soak up the sun.

Twenty-seven miles of dazzling white sand stretches along this section of the Gulf of Mexico at Panama City Beach, and the shallow waters are perfect for younger kids, inviting beyond belief in the summer heat.

One of the major landmarks along the waterfront is City Pier , where much of the hottest beach scene is centered, with beach volleyball games and young people hanging out and socializing.

Across the street from the wooden pier is Pier Park , with shops and restaurants. This can be a good place to break for lunch or catch some shade.

The beachfront hotels and condos that run up and down the shore fill up from spring until fall. If you are coming in the off-season to enjoy the view or the tranquility, these hotels offer steep discounts.

Pier Park

Pier Park, directly across from Russell-Fields Pier , more commonly known as City Pier, is a shopping, dining, and entertainment complex, with a tourist-oriented twist. If you are looking for a break from the beach, Pier Park is a convenient and pleasant distraction. It's also the best place to visit on a cold or rainy day.

Pier Park is a lively place and a perfect place to shop and go for lunch or dinner. Most restaurants feature outdoor patios where you can catch the sea breeze.

Shopping options range from beach-themed apparel shops to high-end chain and department stores. Also on-site is the Pier Park Amusements , which features a variety of things to do, including rides and an IMAX theater.

SkyWheel at night in Panama City Beach

One of the newer attractions in Panama City Beach is the SkyWheel, a giant 170-foot-high Ferris wheel. Amazing views are enjoyed from any one of the 30 gondolas, all fully air-conditioned. Each gondola seats six people, except for the VIP glass-floored one, which seats only four.

In addition to the SkyWheel, the entertainment complex also offers a ropes course called the SkyTrail that loops you around a series of obstacles high in the air. Don't worry, you'll be firmly secured to a safety line at all times.

If you've ever wanted to try ziplining, the SkyRail is worth a try. This short zipline will give you a taste of what larger courses may be like and whether you'd like to give them a try as you travel around.

A fun mini-golf, also known as Putt-Putt in the southern United States, is also available, and its unique and challenging holes are guaranteed to bring a smile to you and your kids' faces.

Russell-Fields Pier

Russell-Fields Pier , just across the street from Pier Park, juts out 1,500 feet into the sea. This pier, one of the longest along the entire Gulf of Mexico, is an excellent place to wander out to soak up amazing views up and down the coast. It's also a popular place to visit to catch the sunset.

Look over the side of the pier as you walk out to the end. There's a good chance that you'll see a passing dolphin or perhaps a manta ray skimming along the bottom. The pier attracts all kinds of birdlife, from pelicans to gulls, right through to herons. These patient avian observers stand at the ready to help out the fishermen in exchange for a piece of bait.

If you are into fishing , the pier is one of the best spots in Panama City to try your luck. Some of the common catches are pompano, mullet, grouper, cobia, and many others, depending on the season. A small admission fee is charged to access the pier and is good for the day. A higher fee is charged to fish.

The pier is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If you'd like to visit another pier that is a bit more low-key, consider heading to M.B. Miller County Pier. It's about 15 minutes north along Highway 30, just past the SpringHill Suites Panama City Beach Beachfront hotel.

Location: Across from Russell-Fields Pier on Pier Park Drive, Panama City Beach, Florida

Gulf World Marine Park

Gulf World Marine Park is one of Panama City Beach's top fun family attractions. The park has all kinds of sea life and free daily shows featuring dolphins, sea lions, and a variety of birds. Park residents include alligators, penguins, sharks, and many other exciting critters.

The park also offers exclusive hands-on and interactive experiences, including a 20,000-gallon stingray pool where visitors can not only pet the smooth, graceful fish but actually get to wade in the pool and snorkel beside them.

Interactive programs include the ever-popular swimming with the dolphins and the opportunity to get up close with adorable harbor seals or participate in a sea lion training session. If you've ever wanted to get a wet, sloppy kiss from a dolphin, this is the place to do it.

The park is open seasonally and closed between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

St. Andrews State Park and Shell Island

St. Andrews State Park is a diverse area with a little of everything when it comes to beach activities along the Gulf of Mexico. Featuring shallow, protected areas for a relaxing swim or snorkel , and sections with larger waves for playing in, St. Andrews is the perfect place for anyone looking to enjoy the beach and ocean.

One of the most popular things to do in this park is exploring Shell Island , a 700-acre barrier island with a glorious stretch of beach. The Shell Island Shuttle runs every half hour during the summer, picking up and dropping off passengers. You can also rent a pontoon boat to get to Shell Island, a great option for families who want to explore the island at their own pace and do some snorkeling.

St. Andrews State Park is a popular place to camp, with 60 sites, all with water and electricity. Maximum RV size is 45 feet. The state is in the midst of a significant upgrade to the campground facilities. This project is expected to be finished at some point in 2022.

Location: Three miles east of Panama City Beach, off State Road 392, on Thomas Drive

Kayaks in Panama City Beach

To add a little fun and excitement to your holiday, boat tours are a great way to see some marine life, access snorkeling sites, or do some sailing. Excursions range from dolphin sightseeing tours to Sea-Doo, canoe, kayak, and stand up paddleboard rentals.

Fishing charters are offered by several companies, and catamaran sailing trips are also popular, particularly sunset sails. For families, the Sea Dragon Pirate Cruise is a kid's themed pirate ship with two-hour sailings and on-board activities for children. Again, many of these are season specific and are not offered in the low season, and reservations are highly recommended.

A particularly good boat excursion is the Sunset Catamaran Sail , popular with families but also an incredibly romantic outing for couples. The sail departs late in the afternoon on a Privateer catamaran, and guests can enjoy a complimentary beverage while enjoying the ambiance of island music and keeping an eye out for dolphins. As the sun goes down, passengers get an unparalleled view of the colors as it dips beneath the horizon over the Gulf.

Ripley's Believe It or Not!

The newly renovated Ripley's Believe It or Not! is a great rainy day outing or a break from the sun, and one of the more quirky things to do in Panama City Beach.

This facility, designed in the shape of a ship, has four main attractions: the Odditorium , with traditional Ripley's oddities; the 7D Moving Theatre , which is more of a ride than just a movie-watching experience; the Impossible LaseRace , with a laser obstacle course; and the Marvelous Mirror Maze , where lights and creatively placed mirrors make finding your way out more than just a minor challenge.

Ticket prices vary depending on what attractions you want to participate in, but combo tickets for all four attractions are available.

Shipwreck Island Park

On a hot summer day, this water park is a welcome treat, with a lazy river, raging river, and wave pool, as well as all kinds of water-based rides and slides. One of the highlights of a visit here is the short zipline that whizzes you above a pool before unceremoniously dropping you when you least expect it.

Skull Island features a family pool with a kiddie slide, racing slide, and a giant tipping bucket, while Tadpole Hole is a children's pool with activities for younger kids. Shipwreck Island has been in business here for decades and is a great family outing, designed to satisfy children of all ages.

Next door, Goofy Golf is a fun place to play while you dry off, home to two 18-hole mini-golf courses. A local family attraction since 1959, it is also one of the least expensive family attractions on the Miracle Strip and doubles as a play-park with huge statues that children can play on and climb.

Address: 12201 Hutchison Boulevard, Panama City Beach, Florida

The maze at Coconut Creek Family Fun Park

An outing to Coconut Creek Family Fun Park is a great off-the-beach option for families visiting with children. The park has mini-golf, with two 18-hole courses, and a large outdoor maze.

The mini-golf courses are two of the best in town, with extensive water features and enormous African animal statues. If you've never had the experience of being in a giant maze, the outdoor version here will more than fulfill the need. Viewing platforms over the maze let observers watch the action from above.

In the same vicinity are Ripley's Believe It Or Not! , in the design of a ship, and WonderWorks , with their signature upside down building.

Other nearby family attractions include Race City, a carnival-style amusement park with ticketed rides, including a Ferris wheel, bumper boats, and kiddie rides. Cobra Adventure Park is a smaller family park, which offers mini-golf and a roller coaster for younger children, and both parks feature go-karts, thrill rides, and video game arcades.

Bottlenose dolphin

Water Planet offers full-day swim-with-the-dolphin programs, which include an educational aspect, a boat tour, and a side trip to Shell Island .

Unlike Gulf World Marine Park , participants swim with the dolphins in their natural ocean habitat rather than in enclosures. Staff members, who include interns, take time to educate guests on the dolphins and safety precautions before getting in the water.

This is a particularly good activity to do with kids, who get to learn about sea life while having fun. A favorite part of these excursions is helping spot pods of dolphins, then jumping in the ocean to interact with these friendly mammals. Tours also visit a few other sightseeing spots in the area for snorkeling or shelling.

Panama City Beach (PCB) Conservation Park

With just under 3,000 acres of uplands and wetlands, PCB Conservation Park offers a range of outdoor recreational opportunities, from hiking and biking to bird-watching and wildlife spotting.

The park has a dozen well-maintained trails, which range from approximately a half mile to 12 miles in length, a total of 24 miles in all. Several of these have sections of boardwalk, which are especially convenient for strollers and wheelchairs, and most of the dirt paths are reasonably level, making them suitable for anyone.

Towering pine trees dominate some trails, providing shade on hot days, and there are shaded picnic areas as well as restrooms for visitor use. Another great advantage of this park is that there is no admission fee, and guided Audubon walks are available, as well as regular naturalist programs.

Dogs are permitted, but must be leashed.

Address: 100 Conservation Drive, Panama City Beach, Florida

Lemur

Another option for an off-the-beach activity on a cooler day is a trip to ZooWorld. This is a relatively small zoo with an entertaining selection of animals, which include giraffes, tigers, lions, tropical birds, reptiles, and many other lovable critters.

The park has made significant improvements, and the newest change is a larger lion enclosure along with a new crested porcupine nursery and a place to see baby cranes.

The zoo's main focus is on its close-up encounters, which are popular with kids and animal-lovers of all ages. These include giraffe feeding from an elevated platform, lemur snuggling, sloth petting, alligator feeding, and a walk through an aviary with tropical birds flying above. Most of these animal interaction activities involve an extra fee, but are well worth the money.

WonderWorks

The building itself makes WonderWorks one of Panama City Beach's best-known landmarks, a topsy-turvy architectural feat that adds whimsical charm to the landscape. Far more than just another place to bring the kids to work off their energy on a rainy or super-hot day, WonderWorks is more like a giant playground-meets-science museum.

Families can experience interactive learning together, from exciting rides that prove the properties of physics to creating a mural with a wall of backlit colored pegs. Top exhibits include a Tesla coil, where you can put your hand into 100,000 volts of electricity; an Army Blackhawk simulator; and the Space Discovery area, where you can put on an astronaut's EVA suit and climb in a replica Mercury capsule.

Additional areas are geared toward younger children, like the Bubble Lab and games in the Imagination Lab.

You can also play your way around Skull Island, or little ones can get their own day of play at the Tadpole Hole. For more summer fun, the park also offers a season pass, as well as a second-day pass that’s heavily discounted in case you want to go more than once during your Panama City Beach vacation.

3. Discover the Animal Kingdom at Gulf World Marine Park

Fun Things to do in Panama City Beach, Florida: Gulf World Marine Park

Dedicated to the study and conservation of marine mammals, Gulf World Marine Park is one of the most unique things to do in Panama City Beach, offering up-close encounters with these majestic creatures you can’t find anywhere else. It’s home to a variety of marine life, from California sea lions to African penguins – but it’s the rare rough-toothed dolphins that often attract visitors the most.

General admission gets you access to see the animals and watch the daily shows, but the main attraction here comes from the animal encounters, which are an additional fee. Guests can meet with or even swim with either bottlenose or rough-toothed dolphins.

Panama City Beach, Florida Bucket List: Gulf World Marine Park

But there are other animals to meet here, too. Greet a harbor seal, stingray, sea lion, and penguin. Or do the VIP Sea Life Experience, where you can choose three interactive animal programs, plus lunch and digital photos. The park also offers a special Animal Therapy experience for children with disabilities or sensory processing differences.

4. Take an Airboat Tour

Must do things in Panama City Beach, Florida: Airboat Tour

Taking an airboat tour is one of the coolest things to do in Panama City Beach, Florida. It gets you up close with the wildlife in a safe, fun way. And you’ll find plenty of airboat tour options in the area.

One of the most popular airboat tour companies is Wild Thang Airboat Tours , which prides itself on offering one of the safest and most fun tours available. On every airboat tour, you’ll be led by a US Coast Guard Master Captain, who will take you out from the company’s private docks on a journey of a lifetime.

During a half-hour tour, you’ll get a scenic ride and a chance to see dolphins and native birds. But because of the time constraint, seeing alligators is unlikely. If you’d really like to see these ancient creatures, you’re better off taking an hour-long ride, where you’ll glide through marshes and creeks to spot baby alligators and maybe their mothers.

You can also take an hour-long tour at night, which is the best time to see alligators. The captain and crew will shine their spotlights on the eyes of the gators, making sure that you get the chance to see these incredible reptiles when they’re most likely to be hunting.

5. Enjoy the Views from St. Andrews State Park

What to do in Panama City Beach, Florida: St Andrews State Park

Traveling with a group that can’t decide whether to go to the beach or hike through Panama City Beach’s gorgeous trails? Then, St. Andrews State Park is definitely one of the must-do things in Panama City Beach during your vacation.

On one side of the park, you’ll find trails running through pines and along dunes, as well as a two-mile paved road for bicycles. Hike the two half-mile trails of Heron Pond Trail, which takes you through the flatwood pine forest and out toward Sandy Point, or the Gator Lake Trail, which offers scenic lakeside views. Gator Lake Trail is also a great place to spot alligators and wading birds, while Button Bush Marsh Overlook is a perfect vantage point to see birds of all kinds.

On the other side of the park, you’ll find a mile-and-a-half of pristine white sand beaches running along emerald waters. Rent a pontoon boat to spend a day out on the water, book a kayak or paddleboard ride, scuba dive, snorkel, surf, or simply swim. You can also go fishing, provided you have a Florida saltwater fishing license.

Take a Scuba Diving Lesson and Tour

6. Play around Swampy Jack’s Wongo Adventure

If you’re bringing kids along on your vacation, Swampy Jack’s Wongo Adventure is one of the best things to do in Panama City Beach, Florida. It’s a family entertainment center and theme park that’s fun for everyone, from the little ones to the adults in your group. The theme park’s story follows Swampy Jack, a world traveler who is inviting the park guests along on his adventures.

Grab yourself a Wongo Card and use it to go on all of Swampy Jack’s travels. Get a close encounter with the Swamp Ape, race go-karts through the desert in the Marrakesh Road Rally, soar through the skies on the Eye of the Kraken, go on a winding journey aboard Yacuma, pilot your own submersible vessel into the Red Sea’s Blue Hole, or locate the hidden temple in the Jungles of Angkor Wat mini-golf course.

Don’t forget to cool off with a cold one at Swampy’s Cantina. This casual spot also features a number of traditional theme park treats, as well as some not-so-traditional Gator Bites.

7. Take a Boat Out to Shell Island

Panama City Beach, Florida Things to do: Shell Island

On the southeastern end of Panama City Beach, you’ll find a seven-mile-long barrier island called Shell Island. It’s a part of St. Andrews State Park, but it’s undeveloped. Here you’ll find miles of white sand beaches and untouched flora. Due to it being undeveloped, it’s a perfect place to spot wildlife. It’s also an ideal escape away from the hustle and bustle of Panama City Beach and another one of the must-do things in Panama City Beach for any beach lover.

Shell Island is only accessible by boat, but luckily, there’s an easy way to get there for a day of beach-going. You can hop on the Shell Island Ferry , running from March through December. It’s the official service of St. Andrews State Park, so you know you’re in for a safe, secure, and simple ride.

One thing to keep in mind is that because Shell Island is undeveloped, you won’t find any restrooms, shade, or food on the island. It’s best to bring your own, but be sure to pack away anything that needs to be thrown away so it can be properly disposed of off the island.

The calm waters here make for great swimming, but it’s also an ideal spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. Tropical fish, dolphins, and sea turtles are common in the area, and snorkeling and scuba equipment is available for rent at the Pier Store in St. Andrews State Park.

8. Have a Beach Day

Best Things to do in Panama City Beach, Florida: Have a Beach Day

If you’re visiting Panama City Beach, you might expect to, well, go to the beach! And luckily, there are tons to choose from in this area, and each has its own unique personality and features.

Over at M. B. Miller County Pier Beach, you can have a romantic day here and stroll along the pier to take in the sunset over the water. This beach is ideal for swimming, fishing, and looking for seashells. You may even spot sea turtles, dolphins, and manta rays hanging out nearby.

Rick Seltzer Beach is a perfect pick if you want to be near the action. If you want to be able to stroll onto the beach and then walk off to dinner at a delicious nearby restaurant, this beach should be your pick. But if you want the opposite and are looking to escape the city, head to Crooked Island Beach for a tranquil and restful retreat.

Enjoy a Romantic Sunset Cruise

9. Climb aboard a Dolphin-Watching Cruise

Fun Things to do in Panama City Beach, Florida: Dolphin Watching Cruise

Dolphins are in the waters around Panama City Beach all year round, but the best time to see them tends to be between May and October. You’re more likely to see them when the weather is warm and sunny, too. If you’re vacationing during this time, taking a dolphin-watching cruise is one of the coolest Panama City Beach activities.

Though there are many dolphin tours available in this area, one of the most popular is a tour by Coastal Wildlife Adventures . These tours are especially wonderful because they offer both dolphin cruises and snorkeling tours. During one tour, you’ll be taken out to Shell Island, where you’ll spend two hours looking for dolphins and other wildlife.

Unique Things to do in Panama City Beach, Florida: Dolphin Watching Cruise

But you can also add on an additional hour to go snorkeling. Shell Island is one of the best snorkeling spots in Panama City Beach and a can’t-miss experience. If you’d just like to see the dolphins on a scenic sunset cruise, that option is available as well. This tour company also offers private charters, as well as all-day expeditions for more dolphin-spotting and snorkeling opportunities.

Meet the Panama City Beach Dolphins

10. Be a Pirate on the Sea Dragon Pirate Cruise

Over in the Lighthouse Marina in Panama City, you’ll find one of the best Panama City Beach attractions, especially if you’re traveling with kids. The Sea Dragon Pirate Cruise offers little ones a chance to live out their swashbuckling fantasies while the adults in the group get to enjoy the show and the scenic cruise aboard a pirate ship. If you’re lucky, you might just spot some dolphins jumping alongside your ship!

Captain “Fearless” Phil is quite the friendly pirate, and he and his crew are ready to give you and your little ones an afternoon of fun and adventure. Kids will love singing along to pirate songs. Don’t worry – they’re quite a bit more family-friendly than real pirate songs. But that’s not all the fun your kids will get up to.

They’ll sword fight, swab the deck, fire the cannons, and even find a sunken treasure. Better come prepared to get wet because there’s also a water gunfight on board. Then, your kids will shake their booties at a pirate dance party. They will be asking you to come back time and again.

11. Kayak around Camp Helen State Park

Panama City Beach, Florida Bucket List: Camp Helen State Park

Bordered by the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Powell, the largest coastal dune lake in Florida, Camp Helen State Park is another one of the best Panama City Beach attractions if you love spending your days by the water. This 180-acre park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is filled with opportunities for exploration.

Before you head into the water, be sure to check out the historic district inside the park. You’ll find a water tower, lodge, rainbow cottages, duplexes, and recreation hall, all restored to allow you to step back into the park’s past.

What to do in Panama City Beach, Florida: Camp Helen State Park

Afterward, you can look for wildlife, with the park being home to many different kinds of shorebirds, as well as being a stopping point for many migratory species. Going on a hike through the Canopy Trail, which winds through a canopy of maritime hammock overlooking a salt marsh, is a great way to see the wildlife. And with a proper fishing license, you can also go both freshwater and saltwater fishing here.

You’re also welcome to swim in both the Gulf of Mexico and the lake. But to get further out on the water and explore, you can also rent a kayak or paddleboard from the park.

12. Look for Animals at Conservation Park

As the name implies, Conservation Park , one of the best things to do in Panama City Beach, is dedicated to the protection of our natural environment. But the park also serves as a place where people can enjoy the natural beauty of all this flora and fauna from the safety of its trails. The 2,900-acre park protects wetlands and pine forests while also tending to the waters of St. Andrews Bay.

Conservation Park has over 24 miles of trails to explore, as well as over a mile of boardwalks that go through the cypress domes. The 12 different trails range from 0.6 miles to 11 miles, offering something for everyone, from new hikers looking for a breezy walk to experienced hikers wanting to spend the whole day exploring the park.

Because this park is such an important part of protecting Panama City Beach’s wildlife, taking a guided walk is a great way to see all the animals. The park offers guided Audubon bird walks, as well as recreational programs that allow you to get a deeper understanding of the creatures you’re seeing.

13. Explore Pier Park

Cool Things to do in Panama City Beach, Florida: Pier Park

What is there to do at Pier Park? Only some of the best Panama City Beach activities! This outdoor shopping and entertainment complex boasts 124 stores, from casual favorites to unique boutique shops. Feeling hungry? Anything you could want to eat and drink you’ll find here – from fresh and local seafood to steaks to margaritas.

But Pier Park is more than a place for great food and shopping. It’s also a place for good times and memories that will stick with you long after the trip is over. Become a part of the show at the Grand IMAX Theater , dine and play at Dave & Buster’s , battle it out in a 1,800-square-foot arena at Pirate’s Quest Laser Tag, and test your skills at the Emerald Coast Mirror Maze .

Panama City Beach, Florida Things to do: Pier Park

For live music and dancing, head to Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge . Then, finish off the night with a ride featuring breathtaking views aboard the SkyWheel , which offers clime-controlled gondolas so you can enjoy the panorama all year long.

14. Adventure around Coconut Creek Family Fun Park

Unique Things to do in Panama City Beach, Florida: Coconut Creek Family Fun Park

For another fun thing to do in Panama City Beach with kids, check out Coconut Creek Family Fun Park . This family-friendly park is a sprawling location filled with cool things to do, especially if you’re traveling with little ones.

Coconut Creek Family Fun Park offers two different mini-golf courses, filled with tons of safari-themed attractions. See cascading waterfalls, putt past gorillas and elephants, and meander your way through a tropical jungle filled with native plants and flowing streams. Make your way around Good Luck Lake, teeming with bass, bream, and carp.

But the main attraction at this park is the Gran Maze, a maze that’s nearly the size of a football field. Use your skills to find the four checkpoints and make it out without losing your marbles. If you finish ahead of your group, you can watch their progress from the Observation Deck or play a round of the Maze Runner game or Monkey Ring Toss.

15. Meet the Animals at ZooWorld Zoological and Botanical Conservatory

Must do things in Panama City Beach, Florida: ZooWorld Zoological and Botanical Conservatory

ZooWorld Zoological and Botanical Conservatory offers you a chance to get up close to the animals in a way that you can’t find anywhere else. Home to over 350 animals and 250 species of plants, this park lets visitors check out critters and creatures from all over the world in one place. But the biggest draw to ZooWorld is that you can even interact with the animals.

Fun Things to do in Panama City Beach, Florida: ZooWorld Zoological and Botanical Conservatory

Cuddle a capybara, hold a kangaroo, pet a sloth, snuggle a lemur, or get up close to a baby alligator. You also have the chance to feed larger animals, like a pool of over 80 alligators or a giraffe. Another way this park lets you get close to the animals is by walking through the Budgie Bush-Walk Aviary, a free-flight aviary with tons of exotic birds. 14 Best Things to Do in Panama City Beach (FL)

The ultimate vacation spot on Florida’s Panhandle, Panama City Beach has 27 miles of perfect sandy shoreline.

How you experience the shore is up to you. Families will be wowed by an animated seaside town, packed with attractions, from waterparks to zoos and fun centers.

There’s shopping, dining and entertainment at Pier Park, as well as a loaded program of public events all year.

If it’s nature and tranquility you need, I can assure you that Panama City Beach will not disappoint. At St. Andrews State Park the row of condos and resort hotels melts away, leaving nothing more than dunes, bayfront, and sublime white sandy beaches.

1. St. Andrews State Park

St. Andrews State Park

I’m not sure I’ve encountered many stretches of coastline as beautiful as St. Andrews State Park. Facing the gulf shore on this remote peninsula are 1.5 miles of near immaculate beaches.

A real change of scenery from the busy shorefront at Panama City Beach, the beach, dunes, pine flatwoods, and marshes here have never been developed.

There’s much to do, from snorkeling in the swimming area to fishing and camping. But one of the truly unmissable experiences is catching the shuttle across the inlet to Shell Island.

2. Rick Seltzer Beach

Rick Seltzer Beach

Panama City Beach has dozens of municipal access points, but if I had to pick one, it would be Rick Seltzer Park.

First, there’s plentiful parking, which is always important. The patrolled beach is close to a slew of hotels and restaurants, making it a great fit for those who want to spend as little time as possible in the car.

In many parts of the city, the dunes are practically lost. Here this system has been preserved, and the walkover has interpretive signs informing you about the habitat.

Amenities include vending machines, gazebos, and restrooms with outdoor showers to wash away the salt and sand.

3. Pier Park

Panama City Beach’s main shopping destination is a vast outdoor mall located opposite the Russell-Fields Pier.

Pier Park is made up of two sections. North of US 98 there’s a classic power center, with big box stores like Dick’s Sporting Goods.

South of the highway is a more tourist friendly lifestyle center, laid out like a downtown. Wandering here I saw the likes of Old Navy, JCPenney, Forever 21, Hot Topic, Crocs, and Kay Jewelers.

The closer you get to the shore, the more restaurants and attractions there are. This includes the SkyWheel, which I’ll come to later, and the Grand Theatre 16 with IMAX.

4. Shipwreck Island Waterpark

Shipwreck Island Waterpark

Up there with the area’s top family spots, this water park features hundreds of thousands of gallons of attractions.

Among them are slides of all descriptions, as well as a huge wave pool, a lazy river, and a giant tipping bucket. For my money Shipwreck Island Waterpark is the perfect alternative for travelers with kids looking for an alternative to the beach.

If you’re up for some thrills, Raging Rapids is an inner tube ride with exhilarating drops at the start and finish.

Pirate’s Plunge meanwhile is a dueling waterslide swooping from a 60-foot tower, while Tree Top Drop was scariest of all for me. This starts in pure darkness, and half way through there’s a sudden free-fall.

5. Shell Island

Shell Island

If St. Andrews State Park feels secluded, then Shell Island is like a different planet. Setting foot on these shores you’ll be met by seven miles of undeveloped beaches, trimmed with dunes and lapped by shimmering, crystalline waters.

For those who like their beaches close to shopping outlets, coffee shops, and art galleries, this would not be a good fit.

Amenities are non-existent here, so I reckon it’s worth making a checklist before setting off. As well as the usual essentials, remember to bring snorkeling gear and a beach umbrella, and you’ll be set for a day in paradise.

6. Russell-Fields City Pier

Russell-Fields City Pier

Measuring more than 1,500 feet, Russell-Fields City Pier is one of the longest piers on the Gulf. It’s a favorite destination for walkers, anglers, and those interested in witnessing an amazing Florida sunset.

Keep an eye on the water, as It’s common to see fish, rays, and turtles in the surf below the pier. On my visit there was a crowd of fishing folk hauling up all kinds of interesting catches.

The pier is adjacent to City Beach, which is staffed by lifeguards from May until October. There are even beach volleyball courts which draw the young, athletic crowd on a regular basis.

7. Museum of Man in the Sea

Museum Of Man In The Sea

Founded in 1982, this one-of-a-kind museum showcases the development of diving technology. The Museum of Man in the Sea was partly founded by a group of veterans from the US Navy’s pioneering SEALAB Program.

What you’ll see is a wealth of Navy and commercial diving equipment, both historic and contemporary. At the core of the collection are the experimental SEALAB systems of the 60s and 70s.

These were the highlights for me, but I was fascinated by the masses of diving gear, going back 200 years, as well as underwater finds from wrecks as old as the 16th century.

8. Race City

Race City

This family fun center is all about speed, and the star attraction is the set of go-kart tracks. I have to say I was impressed by the multi-level PCB 500, which is the fastest, tallest and steepest track in the area.

There’s a diversity of other activities like bumper cars and boats, mazes, a roller coaster, and even a log flume.

It’s a facility that caters to the whole family, so there are plenty of rides, games, and activities suitable for little ones too. There are abundant food choices, and free parking and Wi-Fi.

9. Ripley’s Believe It or Not

Ripley's Believe it or Not

For lovers of all things kitsch, macabre, and surreal, Ripley’s Believe It or Not is the place to go.

Now, I know this brand has locations around the world. But I doubt many look like a giant beached cruise ship, like the one here.

It sits across Front Beach Rd from the upside-down WonderWorks building, and the pair create a strange impression.

From shrunken heads and bizarre artifacts to wax figures and optical illusions, Ripley’s is part funhouse, part shop of horrors, and part museum.

Much of what you’ll see is hands-on, while there’s also a multi-D movie theater and cool mirror maze for those who aren’t opposed to getting lost for a while.

10. SkyWheel Panama City Beach

In between my most recent visits to Panama City Beach, a giant ferris wheel opened in Pier Park. Rising 200 feet, SkyWheel is a high-tech attraction, with full sealed, air-conditioned pods.

The surrounding coastal landscape is completely flat, so the views stretch out for miles in all directions. You can look out to the Gulf of Mexico, west towards Destin, or back over St. Andrews Bay and its estuaries. Naturally, the sunsets up here are nothing short of magnificent.

The wheel is the main attraction at an entertainment center, which also has an 18-hole miniature golf course.

11. ZooWorld Zoological Park

Zoo World Zoological Conservatory

Along Front Beach Rd, this animal attraction specializes in hands-on experiences. These include having a capybara on your lap, snuggling with a lemur, feeding giraffes, or petting a sloth.

When I wrote this list, ZooWorld had just opened a brand new alligator experience area. Here you can hold a yearling gator, while there are also 80+ enormous ones that you can feed from a safe distance.

There’s also a walk-through aviary, with budgies that will fly up and perch on your finger. This is a wonderful option for younger children, who might feel intimidated by the larger animals.

12. Free Concerts at Aaron Bessant Park

Aaron Bessant Park

If there’s a public event taking place in Panama City Beach, it will most likely happen at this 70-acre park, just a couple of blocks from the gulf shore.

The main structure at Aaron Bessant Park is a large amphitheater with a maximum capacity of 10,000.

One of the many events happening here is the Summer Concert Series, with two months of shows on Thursday nights, June through the second week of August. Concerts start at 7:00 pm and tend to last a couple of hours.

You’re free to spread blankets on the ground and bring folding chairs, along with coolers. Other big events here include Oktoberfest, the Fourth of July Fireworks, and the Seabreeze Jazz Festival, to name just a few.

13. Conservation Park

Panama City Beach Conservation Park

At nearly 3,000 acres, Conservation Park is Panama City Beach’s largest public space. A world away from the resort hotels and fun centers, this is an inland haven composed of pine forest and cypress domes.

The park features 24 miles of trails winding into these varied landscapes. This includes more than a mile of boardwalks across the swampy cypress domes.

There are 12 different trails to choose from, and the longest is 11 miles long. So, this is truly a place where you can get away from it all.

I recommend bringing binoculars, and there’s plentiful wildlife along the trails. Whitetail deer, ospreys, wild turkeys, and alligators are just a few you might see.

14. Bayou on the Beach Café

Bayou On The Beach Café

The Pelican State isn’t so far from Panama City Beach, but feels even closer at this authentic Cajun eatery.

Bayou on the Beach Café has been on the scene for some 25 years and has an oyster bar, outdoor seating and a stage for live music.

The entire menu is made from scratch, and this includes specialties like the boudin balls, gumbo, and etouffee. Meanwhile, if you’ve never tried alligator before, this is your chance—it comes with spicy buffalo sauce, or in a po-boy or fried basket.

There are also New Orleans classics like beignets buried in confectioner’s sugar, and muffuletta sandwiches.

How To Get To Panama City Beach FL

Located along the Florida Panhandle , Panama City Beach (also known as PCB) is one of Northwest Floridas best beach destinations.

The easiest ways to reach PCB are by car or plane.

From the North

Highway 79 is the most direct route, but Highways 231, 331 and 77 all connect to Highway 98, which is known as the Panama City Beach Parkway as it crosses though our area.

Each of the north/south highways easily access Interstate 10.

From the West

Highway 98 (Panama City Beach Parkway) goes directly into Panama City Beach.

If you’re travelling on Interstate 10, take Highway 331 South to Highway 20 East, then turn south on Highway 79 until you get to the beach.

From Highway 20, it’s 15 miles south to get to Panama City Beach.

From the East

Highway 98 will bring you directly to Panama City Beach, or take either Interstate 10 or Highway 20 westbound to Highways 79, 77 or 231.

Arrive into Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) .

Located only 12.4 miles (15 minute drive) from the beach.

You can catch a direct flight to ECP on one of these four airlines : Delta, American, Southwest and United Airlines, from the following US airports :

  • Nashville TN
  • St Louis MO
  • Washington DC

Other nearby airports are Destin (DSI) (42.6 miles), Valparaiso Destin-Ft Walton Beach (VPS) (49 miles), Dothan Airport (DHN) (82 miles) or Pensacola (PNS) (85 miles).

From abroad , the easiest route is to fly to Atlanta (ATL) and then fly 1 hour directly to ECP.

Where To Stay in Panama City Beach

If you want a central location then Calypso Resort & Towers is a great choice.

There are three towers made up of luxury condos , with sea views and access to plenty of amenities.

The towers are located right next to Pier Park (the best place for shopping and entertainment in PCB), and are opposite the beach , making them perfect for families, couples or friends who want a location that is within walking distance to the main attractions.

The condos sleep up to 11 guests , and amenities include a private stretch of beach , a gym , outdoor swimming pool , and sun loungers.

I stayed in a beautiful nautical themed one bedroom condo in Tower 3.

There were two bathrooms, a balcony, an open plan kitchen and a living room with a clever built in area for a set of bunk beds , making it a versatile space for solo travellers, couples, and families with 2 children.

How to Get Around Panama City Beach

If you stay at Calypso Resort & Towers you can walk to the beach, Pier Park and several of the coastal restaurants but to visit more of Panama City Beach you will need a car.

If you don’t have your own then make sure you book a car rental well in advance for the best prices.

How Long Should You Stay in Panama City Beach

I spent three nights in PCB Florida , and thought it was a great amount of time to see the best things the destination has to offer.

However, the area is known for being laidback so you could easily spend a week soaking up the rays, feasting on seafood and having a relaxing beach break without getting bored.

Just remember, how many days you spend in Panama City Beach may depend on the rest of your vacation.

If you plan to road trip across the Florida Panhandle like I did and see a few coastal destinations such as the hidden gem of South Walton (30A) or the foodie paradise of Pensacola or the beach hotspot of Fort Walton Beach , then 2-3 nights in each destination is perfect, as the driving distances are minimal.

Unique Things To Do Panama City Beach FL

There is plenty to keep you busy in Panama City Beach, but here are a selection of my favourite things to do.

Visit Shell Island

Located just off the Emerald Coast and part of St. Andrews State Park , this 7-mile long barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico is a must see in PCB.

Shell Island is a haven for wildlife and marine animals , so the entire area is undeveloped and preserved .

This is one of the best places to experience what they call “The Real Florida” .

Don’t expect restaurants, restrooms or even any shade, but instead explore miles of pristine nature , that you won’t experience in other places like Orlando and Miami .

The unspoilt white-sand beaches are perfect for swimming , snorkeling and spotting the many colourful fish, dolphins and sea turtles that frequent the area.

In fact the waters around Panama City Beach are home to one of the highest populations of bottle-nosed dolphins in North America.

Shell Island can only be reached by boat . There are several cruises that will take you there but if you want to avoid the crowds and have a private experience I highly recommend renting a beautiful sail boat and making a day of it like we did.

Or check out these other sunset cruises , dolphin watching trips and speedboat tours of Shell Island.

TOP TIP: Remember sunscreen and a hat, and if you can, try to visit during the week so you’re more likely to have the whole of Shell Island to yourself like we did!

As this spot is very popular with locals on the weekends.

Shell Island is just one section of St Andrews State Park, there are also 1.5 miles of white sand beaches on the mainland, a “kiddie pool” lagoon and the aptly named Gator Lake .

The beaches here, and along the rest of the Florida Panhandle are home to some of the softest sand I’ve ever come across.

Made from quartz crystal from the Appalachian Mountains , the sand is a stark white colour that beautifully complements the emerald green waters of this coastline.

If you want to try something different, St Andrews State Park is a great place to dive.

Discover Camp Helen State Park

Address:  23937 Panama City Beach Pkwy, Panama City Beach, FL 32413

Website: floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/camp-helen-state-park

Price: $4 per vehicle. $2 per pedestrian or bicyclist.

One of Florida’s most unique state parks is Camp Helen.

It is bordered on one side by the Gulf of Mexico and on two other sides by Lake Powell , the largest coastal dune lake in Florida.

This ecological gem is often overlooked by visitors but it offers pristine beaches, sand dunes and winding hiking trails that allow you to explore the area.

At Camp Helen you can kayak, paddle board, fish, or swim , so it’s easy to spend a half or full day here.

Shop and Play at Pier Park

Address:  600 Pier Park Dr, Panama City Beach, FL 32413

Website: visitpanamacitybeach.com/pier-park/

Price: Free entry

Pier Park is Panama City Beach’s premier shopping and entertainment destination.

It serves both PCB and 30A , and contains 124 stores from well known names to unique boutiques.

Pier Park is also one of the best indoor places to visit in Panama City (especially on one of the rare rainy days) as it has plenty of dining options, a Grand IMAX movie theater, laser tag, an arcade, mirror maze and an escape room !

Ride the SkyWheel

Address: 15700 LC Hilton Jr. Drive, Panama City Beach, FL 32413

Website: skywheelpcb.com/

Price: $16.99 plus tax, children 4 and under go free

Located in Pier Park, the SkyWheel ,  is a 53-meter observation wheel with 30 fully enclosed gondolas.

Each gondola holds up to 6 people , and it is always a private experience for your group (you don’t have to share with strangers).

The wheel rotates 3 or 4 times so you get several chances to experience a panoramic view of Panama City Beach and the ocean.

Visit Dog Beach

Address:  33753-000-000, Panama City Beach, FL 32413

Dog Beach is the perfect dedicated place to take your pup to the beach in Panama City Beach.

It is located on the west side of the Russell-Fields City Pier and is directly in front of Pier Park .

Even if you don’t have a dog its a great place to watch them frolic in the sea (that’s what I did!).

TOP TIP: There are over 100 beach access points in PCB, but only 56, 57, and 58, are dog friendly.

Experience a Beach Bonfire

All along the Florida Panhandle you can find companies who set up incredible beach experiences that really take your holiday to the next level.

In Panama City Beach, Endless Beach Rentals are the guys to go to.

I experienced a beach bonfire from sunset onwards with a hammock, deck chairs, tiki lights, a fire pit, and even all the ingredients to make s’mores!

It was a great way to relax, and I can see why it’s so popular for birthdays and other occasions.

Just remember to bring something warm for those cooler evenings.

Enjoy the Live Music at Tootsies Orchid Lounge

Address:  700 Pier Park Dr, Panama City Beach, FL 32413

Website: tootsies.net/

Located in Pier Park, just a few minutes walk from Calypso Resort & Towers , Tootsies Orchid Lounge in Panama City Beach is the sister club of the Nashville country music institution and world-famous honky-tonk.

If you want live music (all the way from Nashville TN), this is the place to spend your evenings listening to everything from new country to old rock-n-roll.

Best Places to Eat in Panama City Beach

The dining in PCB is an experience of its own, here are 7 restaurants that will give you a taste of the Northwest Florida Coast.

Andy’s Flour Power

Address: 2629 Thomas Dr, Panama City, FL 32408

Website: andysflourpower.com/

This was my favourite dining experience of the entire week in Northwest Florida. Everything I ate made me smile.

The restaurant is only open for breakfast and lunch , but the menu is full of simple food with a twist, elevated by fresh ingredients.

From flaky pastries to unique flavoured muffins (you have to try their famous pistachio muffins ) and quite possibly the best omelette I’ve ever had.

Other popular dishes I tried include the breakfast potatoes , the french toast baguettes and the breakfast martinis.

Yes, this is the kind of place where you drink with breakfast (felt like London) so make sure you have nothing strenuous planned for the rest of the day.

The owner (Andy is not his real), makes the experience that much more special.

He’s so passionate about his menu , and will happily regale the story and inspiration behind each dish.

If you see him wandering around, do yourself a favour and have a chat with him, it will make your day.

Thomas Donut & Snack Shop

Address: 19208 Front Beach Rd, Panama City Beach, FL 32413

Website: thomasdonutandsnackshop.com/

This family owned donut shop is located right on the beachfront and has been in business since 1971.

Frequented by both locals and tourists, this snack shop is famous for its donuts, muffins and breakfast biscuits, that taste as good as they look!

They also sell sandwiches and hot dogs at lunch, so this is a great place to pop by if you are enjoying a day at the beach.

The Pour Coffee & Community

Address: 12902 Front Beach Rd, Panama City Beach, FL 32407

Website: thepourpcb.com/

The Pour is a non-profit coffee house. Serving hand crafted drinks, and delicious breakfast items, this coffee shop is run with the community in mind.

I’m not a coffee drinker but I can highly recommend the frozen white chocolate and the almond butter and banana toast with honey and chia seeds.

Diego’s Burrito Factory & Margarita Bar

Address:  6209 Sunset Dr, Panama City Beach, FL 32408 and 15514 Front Beach Rd, Panama City Beach, FL 32413

Website: diegosburritofactory.com/menu

This laidback and affordable Mexican restaurant is everything I miss about the US when I’m at home in London.

We just don’t have anything comparable. But that means whenever I’m in the States, I make sure I take advantage of it!

Diego’s is a great place to grab a quick burrito, quesadilla, or a street taco alongside a yummy Margarita (I recommend the Pineapple one).

The portions are hearty but that didn’t stop me from finishing a burrito bigger than my face!

They have two locations in Panama City Beach , and one is just a 7 minute walk from Calypso Resort & Towers , so this was the perfect meal after a 15 hour journey from the UK.

Nothing beats jet lag like a whole lot of comfort food!

Runaway Island

Website: runawayislandpcb.com/

Address: 14521 Front Beach Rd, Panama City Beach, FL 32413

Probably one of the best places for sunset in Panama City Beach, is just a few blocks away from Calypso Resort & Towers and the best view is from Runaway Island restaurant.

Spread over two levels, the outdoor deck is where you need to make sure you get a reservation for!

I enjoyed plenty of starters, seafood and frozen drinks under the glow of sunset, and it was the perfect way to end my trip to PCB.

The Grand Marlin

Address: 5323 N Lagoon Dr, Panama City Beach, FL 32408

Website: thegrandmarlin.com/

This has to be one of the best seafood and oyster bars in Panama City Beach.

Sadly I didn’t get to visit this time round but a few days later I did have dinner at their original location in Pensacola (around 85 miles up the coast).

The food was so incredible that I would actually recommend visiting both if you can!

I’ve written all about the best restaurants in Pensacola , but here are some photos to tempt you.

Address: Shoppes at Edgewater, 535 N Richard Jackson Blvd, Panama City Beach, FL 32407

Website: fireflypcb.com/

This unique restaurant in Panama City Beach, Florida is one of the most romantic places to eat.

Its tagline is “casual fine dining” yet the restaurant has won multiple awards and has even served meals to the Obama family, and the U.S. team at the London Olympic Games.

They have an excellent selection of seafood, steaks, and sushi , and the menu is ever-evolving, so you can have a different experience each time!

I didn’t get to visit this time round but have heard great things so it’s on the list for my next visit to Panama City Beach!
