A Backpacker's Tale

SLICKS Travel System Review – The New Generation of Backpack

SLICKS-travel-system-review

I am excited to review a brand new type of backpack. The SLICKS Travel System is taking backpacks to the next level.

In the few months, I’ve had the SLICKS it has changed the way I carry my gear and has quickly become my favorite piece of travel item.

Almost weekly I get offers to try new travel new backpacks and carry-on bags. I turn down 99% of them. I am careful not to dilute my site with products I don’t believe in.

So when I say the SLICKS Backpack is awesome, you’ll know I mean it.

And for the next few hundred words I want to highlight some of the features of the SLICKS. I will go in-depth about my hands on experience with it and what I think makes it special and unique.

Slicks Travel System Nails Comfort

Slicks-2

A typical week in my life usually means moving everything I own from one city to another at least once. Needless to say, the comfort of my backpack is an important priority. The SLICKS Travel System nails comfort.

The shoulders straps are comfortable and padded. The entire back area has extra padding on high-stress areas, and the backpack is designed that weight is carried quickly.

I am not exaggerating when I say that once or twice I have forgotten that I was carrying a bag.

The comfort is one of the first things I noticed about SLICKS, and it is one of my favorite aspects of the entire pack.

The slicks is THE most comfortable backpack I have ever used.”

Tons of Space

Slicks

SLICKS, ingeniously, was designed to maximize space without sacrificing comfort. . All over the bag are little pockets that maximize you storing capability.

The main compartment opens life a suitcase. Inside is plenty of space for laptops, clothes, and toiletries. The front of a bag has a vertical zipper. I find this perfect for my massive objects, and all my laptops wires, phone, and camera chargers. It makes it easy to sort and store them.

However, my favorite pockets are the little zipper between the main compartment. Unzip this area and you have secret space between your back and the main compartment.

This area is perfect for valuable you want to keep safe. I stash my passport, spare cash, and extra cards here. This city like Mexico City this can help prevent crime. And yes, I know your asking yourself, is Mexico City safe ? With the proper tips and gears it is!

Side note: Please don’t rob me now you know where I keep my valuable items. 🙂

A few other things I love about my SLICKS backpack is how I can change the bag to suit my situation. Say I don’t feel like wearing a backpack for the day. That rarely happens, but say it did.

Well, I can easily tuck away one strap and sling the bag across my shoulders like a satchel. I could also tuck away both straps and use the side handle to carry it like a briefcase. .

Now you are asking yourself! How did the Slicks change the way he travels?

Good question! Let me tell you.

The SLICKS fits every carry-on size for airlines and the way it is built it holds so much stuff. So I thought to myself. Let’s downsize. Check this out!

I had been using an Osprey Farpoint 70L. However, with 70L of room over the last few years, I have been picking up a ton of junk I don’t need.

When I got my SLICKS, I decided it was time to get rid of stuff that was weighing down my life.

Soon I condensed everything down into my SLICKS and a small day pack.

Now I can fly on airlines without having to pay for luggage!

The SLICKS goes in the overhead bin and my little day pack under my seat. It is perfect and has already saved me over $150 in luggage fees in the last month!

How awesome is that? I’ve already saved almost the price of the backpack.

Overall I love the SLICKS. Like I said it is my new favorite travel toy. It is a backpack that enjoy thoroughly enjoy wearing and one that I can endorse 100%. It is definitely going on my list of best travel backpacks that help you explore the most beautiful places in the world .

Head over to the SLICKS Kickstarter and help make this awesome backpack a reality!!

Slicks Travel System Review: All Purpose Travel Backpack

The Slicks Travel System claims to be the one bag for all occasions.  We have been testing the Slicks for a few weeks in a wide variety of situations and it is proving to be one of the most versatile travel backpacks we have ever used.

About the Slicks Travel System

The Slicks backpack is primary designed for commuters who commute via bike and need to carry an entire day worth of items including laptop, suit/change of clothes and the various related items we all pack with us each day.   The bag is designed to be easy to carry on your back and then cleanly convert to a more formal horizontal carry bag for meetings.

How Well Did the Slicks bag work for us?

I ride about 5 miles to work each day and tried the Slicks for a full week. I loved how the bag was big enough to hold my helmet and bike shoes after I got to work so I didn’t clutter up my office.   While larger than I expected the bag felt fine on my back during my ride and the venting on the back

I dont normally wear a suit but for the purpose of the test I tried 3 days with a suit packed to see how well it worked.   While I would have preferred a foam bar to fold the suit, the system kept my suit looking fresh as long as I didn’t over pack the system.

There is an full set of pockets to keep things organized and I liked how the laptop sleeve wasn’t directly against my back like a lot of these types of bags. In addition I liked how industrial the construction of the system is clearly this is a bag that will stand up to A LOT of use.

Slicks Travel System TRIP review

Versatile, premium modular backpack system

Oli Woodman / Immediate Media

Reuben Bakker-Dyos

Tons of storage in a sleek design, comfortable on the bike even when fully laden

Expensive at crowdfunding prices, more so once it hits the shops

slicks travel system

The Slicks Travel System, a modular backpack designed to adapt to users’ changing needs, has been something of a Kickstarter success story, raising five times its target of 80,000 Swiss francs long before its deadline of 4 March 2016.

We’ve been sent out the 'yellow' version of the Slicks – the yellow actually refers to the Slicks logo stripe at the bottom of the bag with additional reflective detailing, a nice touch if your primary intended purpose is – like mine – commuting on the bike.

Organise yourself

One of the first things you’ll notice is that this bag doesn’t have the top zip style of many other rucksacks. The suitcase style opening fully gives away what this bag is meant for – organised travelling.

slicks travel system

The additional reflective detailing on the yellow version is a must-have if you’re commuting on the bike

Via its Kickstarter, the Slicks has been available in a number of options. The basic pledge (£132 / $189) gets you just the backpack, which will retail for £160 / $229. Next tier up, the Slicks Suit (£160 / $229 on Kickstarter; £195 / $279 retail) features – yes you guessed it – a foldable suit cover. We went for the next option (£188 / $269 on Kickstarter; £230 / $329 retail) is the Slicks TRIP – a must have to get the most of out the system, in my opinion. (There's also a BIZ option combining the SUIT and TRIP.)

The TRIP includes within it the Tripcover, which Slicks describes as a ’clever and compact double-sided mobile wardrobe for organising your clothes and toiletries’. This includes a wash bag that fits neatly into the smaller, lower compartment, a laundry bag for any soiled clothing and a shirt cover with a collar protector - an accessory apparently forged by one of Slicks’ founders’ inability to fold a dress shirt.

Since the majority of my use has been through daily commutes, I’ve used the ‘wash bag’ to store a notebook, pen and other easy to lose items as I found the small pockets in there more convenient than the single, big inside pocket within the main bag.

slicks travel system

The Tripcover fits neatly into the main compartment with buckles to secure it into place

It’s clear to see just how much attention to detail has gone into Slicks once you start using it on a regular basis. Zipper pulls that can be tucked away for additional security, a dedicated shoe compartment, low profile zippers, a reflective water-resistant rain cover, and adjustable and removable hip and shoulder straps, allowing for a loads of different ways to carry your kit, are just the start.

Comfortable at capacity

One of my biggest gripes with bags is rigidity when they’re at maximum capacity. There’s nothing worse than a bulging annoyance sticking into your back or the uncomfortably hard case of a laptop trying to bend its way around your spine as you’re riding along, but thankfully Slicks has this covered with a generously padded back protector that conforms to your back position. Even fully loaded, the Slicks never felt really uncomfortable with the weight feeling evenly distributed through the chest and hip straps.

I would however have liked a slightly more pronounced top handle as the current style feels just a tad too recessed behind the back protector to be used without a slight fumble.

slicks travel system

Even at its Kickstarter pricing this is, let’s face it, still a pretty premium offering, but I figure this bag is aimed at two types of people – bag fiends who have more luggage than they can justify (I know I’m firmly in this camp) or those looking to invest in a do-it-all short trip travel bag. To me, neither of those types would shy away from a slightly higher price tag for the convenience of modular storage.

Despite being initially overwhelmed with all the accessories and my indecision of where to pack things, I’ve been mightily impressed with how versatile the Slicks Travel System is. It’s a tricky decision to invest in Kickstarter campaigns, which can be hit and miss, but this one certainly looks to have a bright future.

The campaign ends on 4 March 2016. Sadly, with all Kickstarter products there is a bit of a wait if you’re willing to stump up the cash – the current estimated worldwide delivery is September 2016 – or otherwise you could opt to stump up a little more when these hit the shelves properly.

Slicks Backpack: Cycle to Work And Look A Million Dollars

So you’d love to give bike commuting a shot, but you need to look professional when you get to work. Plus, you want to be able to transport your laptop, toiletries, and maybe even a pair of shoes all in the same bag.

Here at Bike Commuter Hero we’re all about finding the best solutions for each situation. For some people, the Slicks Travel System could just be the answer.

Slicks offers a modular backpack that can be used either as a backpack, a suit carrier, or a garment bag .

Its power lies in how you can combine its modules according to your needs.

slicks travel system

The company is based in Switzerland, and the multi-purpose use is very similar to a Swiss knife: it’s a compact size product with a wide array of features.

If you need to carry a suit, you can use the suit cover; if you need to carry an ironed shirt without creasing it, it has a rigid shirt holder; if you need to bring shoes with you, it has a large compartment that can be used for shoes; if you travel for a couple of days and you want to bring just a carry on for your clothes and your documents and devices, you can do that too.

slicks travel system

Depending on your needs, you can purchase the Slicks as a:

  • PACK: Standalone backpack with rain cover
  • SUIT bundle: Backpack with rain cover + Suit cover
  • TRIP bundle: Backpack with rain cover + Trip cover
  • BIZ bundle: Backpack with rain cover + Trip cover + Suit cover

I reached out to Slicks, and they sent me a BIZ bundle for review so I can show you what it can do and whether you should consider it for your bike commuting needs. Of course, the backpack serves more than just bike commuters, but here we consider it from the viewpoint of a cyclist.

In a nutshell, it’s best for those who want a large capacity, stylish way of  transporting their laptop and change of clothes, including their shoes, and want to make sure that their suit remains dry and crease free even if it rains.

If you decide to purchase this backpack, the Slicks team agreed to knock 15% off the purchase price by using the coupon code ‘HERO’ at the checkout.. Full disclosure, I also get a small commission from each purchase, so it’s a win-win-win situation for the three of us, including Slicks.

Look and quality

The Slicks backpack’s appearance is quite minimalist on the outside, and it manages to conceal quite well the many clever organization features on the inside.

I have the all black version, which is tastefully understated in my opinion.

By looking at the bag the first thing you notice on it is the two reflective stripes on either side of the zipper running down the middle, hiding the shoe compartment. This tasteful feature is a handy one when you pedal at night, offering better visibility. The Slicks logo is also reflective, but it blends in well with the black material of the backpack.

Income School

For some people, this dividing line in the middle is a deal-breaker simply because of how it looks, but I believe that it gives the backpack a tastefully unique look.

The backpack’s outer shell is a firm fabric, which keeps the same shape whether it’s fully loaded or empty. I like the fact that it doesn’t collapse and sag when empty.

On the side there are four compression straps; two on each side. These are neither detachable nor can they be hidden. These need to be kept buckled to make the backpack look neat and tidy. Reflective details can be found on the sides too.

slicks travel system

On the right side there’s a handle, which is used when the Slicks acts as a small luggage. You can hide away the shoulder straps, and convert the backpack into a small carry-on. As a bike commuter, I don’t really need this feature, but it’s nice to have it for travelling.

The shoulder straps are firm, and rather narrow. They too have some reflective details on them, and they also have a chest and a waist strap so you can adjust the backpack to enhance comfort when wearing it. These can be detached or tucked away if you don’t want to use them, or you’re after a completely minimalist look.

slicks travel system

I would have liked to see a bit more padding on the shoulder straps, and I also miss some padding from the handles. Holding a fully loaded backpack by the handles can become uncomfortable for the hands.

The backpack is made of quality materials. The sowing is done with precision, the zippers work smoothly. The bag is going to last for years to come. In fact, I have read that some people still use it just like when it was new after 6 years of regular use.

Organization inside the bag

The Slicks has an impressive array of pockets and organization features .

At the back, there’s a laptop compartment, which can easily take a 15” laptop. It’s designed in a way that it doesn’t reach the very bottom of the backpack, so even if you were to drop it, your computer won’t hit the ground directly.

On the right side, there’s a small quick access pocket, where you can keep items that you need to be able to grab quickly: phone, wallet, keys, etc. This is a handy feature to have, especially when you’re on the bike since nobody can open it while you’re riding. I would be hesitant to keep valuables in it when wearing it in crowded places since the zipper is easy to open and there is no way of securely locking it.

slicks travel system

Under the quick access pocket, there’s another large pocket, which can hold a tablet or a folder. You can easily put a large iPad Pro in it. Since the zipper is hidden and it’s located under the compression straps, it seems like a safe pocket for a tablet even when walking on the street.

slicks travel system

On the opposite side of the bag, there’s another small pocket, which contains the yellow rain cover to make the bag fully waterproof. It’s easy to access in case you get caught in a sudden downpour. As an added bonus, the bright yellow color of the cover enhances your visibility, and it has a reflective logo and two large reflective stripes too.

slicks travel system

To open the main compartment, you need to undo the compression straps on the right side of the bag. Here, you’re greeted with a large, but well-organized packing area .

slicks travel system

The main part can hold your clothes directly, or if you have purchased a bundle, this is where the optional inserts belong.

The suit cover gets me excited since the reason the Slicks is interesting for bike commuters is because it enables them to transport their suit to work easily.

slicks travel system

This suit cover has a dedicated buckle, which prevents it from slipping or falling out when the backpack is opened. It fits into the main compartment like a glove even with a suit, a shirt, and dress pants, and since it comes with a clever hanger, you can hang your suit as soon as you arrive at your destination. This is a welcome feature since you need to minimize the time your clothes spend folded in the suit cover. More on this later.

The TRIP and the BIZ bundles also come with a trip cover , which allows you to organize your clothes even further. There is room for socks, underwear, and toiletries and it even has a clever shirt folder in which you can place your ironed shirt without creasing the collar. You also get a small laundry bag for further organizing your clothes.

slicks travel system

Still, on the inside of the main compartment, there is a mesh pocket for other clothing items and a large pocket with a velcro for holding documents.

There’s also a small semi-quick access pocket on top for small items, located conveniently close to the top of the zipper. Unlike the quick access pocket on the front, this one is much safer to keep valuable items in, and you still get access to everything relatively easily, since you only need to open the zip on the top of the bag to be able to reach it.

slicks travel system

How Does It Wear? Comfort

The Slicks is larger than an average backpack for daily carry since its intended use is different. It enables you to travel light if you go on a short, multi-day trip, or to carry a suit or a dress even if you’re a bike commuter.

However, in my experience as an average size guy (5’11” or 180 cm), the large-ish size of the Slicks doesn’t make wearing it uncomfortable. The size could be an issue for a smaller lady riding a bike, as the bottom may touch the rear side of the saddle .

slicks travel system

Thanks to its firm, but padded back, chest, and waist straps, the Slicks feels comfortable to wear even when fully loaded. With all the added covers and extras, the empty weight of about 5.5lbs (3kg).

Although the backpack has some cooling channels to allow for some air flow, pedaling with the Slicks means that you can expect to sweat some depending on the weather, the intensity, and duration of your ride, and your genetic disposition to sweat. The mesh of a dedicated cycling backpack works better to reduce sweat, but if you’ve decided for a backpack, you’ve embraced the fact that you’re going to perspire more than using a pannier anyway.

If you like the design and the functions of the Slicks, but prefer carrying it as a pannier, I recommend you check out the Mundo Air Pannier , which allows you to carry bulky items on the bike. It’s a small price to pay for a huge convenience.

slicks travel system

How well does it keep your suit crease-free?

For anyone considering the Slicks, I believe this is a key point.

I carried my suit in it to work without any problem and without causing my jacket or trousers to crease. The shirt insert is a really clever way of taking this feature to the next level . Both the suit cover and the trip cover do a great job.

However, don’t expect to use this bag as a wardrobe. You can’t put your suit in it and forget about it for days. I once left my jacket in it for 48 hours, and it needed serious ironing.

The good thing about the suit cover is that it comes with a hanger, so you can prepare your clothes the night before your commute or departure, leave them hanging, and place them in just before leaving. You can also hang your clothes as soon as you arrive at your destination. This way, you will minimize the amount of time your suit spends in the bag, and you can dress up sharp in the office.

Practicality

The Slicks is designed to carry your clothes and electronics in an organized and stylish fashion. It’s a travel bag and when we judge its practicality we need to keep this in mind.

Initially, I thought that it was only practical for commuting and travel, which are its primary intended uses. But the Slicks has grown on me over time, and it has proven to be practical for hikes and as a backpack for daily use as well when used as a standalone backpack . It’s not limited to specific uses as are some other solutions that allow you to carry a suit, but it’s useful in a wide range of scenarios.

slicks travel system

It’s easy to transform it from a suit carrier into a hiking backpack or a carry-on for a flight and super comfortable to wear.

Pros of the Slicks

  • Ample room to carry your clothes for three days or
  • Enough room to carry a suit and gym clothes , including shoes
  • Good organization for laptops, tablets, folders etc.
  • Comes with a fully waterproof rain cover
  • Reflective details around for enhanced visibility in the dark
  • Quick access pockets so you don’t need to hunt for stuff at the bottom of a large bag
  • Solid build quality
  • Looks professional
  • Can be used as a carry-on luggage
  • Good for daily use
  • Lack of padded handle grips and thin-ish shoulder strap
  • Lack of water bottle holder can be an issue for some
  • It can be tricky to put your shoes or access side pockets when the bag is fully loaded.

Final thoughts

Can you justify paying a premium price for the Slicks?

For some people, this is the perfect bag . Who are those few that should consider getting one?

  • Business people who regularly get on the plane for 2-3 day trips and need to look smart
  • Adventurers who love short, weekend getaways and want to carry a small convertible wardrobe and backpack all in one
  • Professionals who would like to bike commute, and are looking for a way to carry their suit to work crease-free

I’m confident that if you feel that you fall in this group of people and decide to get a Slicks backpack for yourself, you will not be disappointed. Shipping and handling is fast, and they offer very good customer support too.

If you consider purchasing a bag, you can grab one at a 15% discount by using the promo code ‘HERO’ at the checkout. This will let the guys from Slicks know that I sent you.

Happy Pedaling!

Slicks Backpack Travel System REVIEW

Nicholas Calderone

A great travel companion for short trips.

A couple of years ago, I went to CES for the first time. It was a long trip — 7 days and I wasn’t sure what to expect for my packing needs. As a result, I overpacked. I had a full size (27-inch) rolling suitcase that was filled to the rim and weighed over 60 pounds. I was fortunate that it wasn’t overweight for my flight, but when I got home I realized just how much stuff I didn’t need. The following year, I tried to be more conservative with my packing and while I did better, I still missed the mark and had more than I needed. One thing I discovered with these two adventures was that the proper baggage can really make or break the trip and you should always begin with the end in mind. Figure out what type of trip you are taking and select the proper baggage for it. With CES, it was a week-long excursion so I needed to be prepared. But for smaller, one or two night trips something a bit more simple can work much better. The Slicks Backpack Travel System is ideal for overnight jaunts and weekend excursions.

Slicks Backpack Travel System REVIEW

You just need one bag that is modular, multifunctional & transformable to meet the demands of your changing travel needs, be it your daily commute, leisure getaways or business trips.

SLICKS is designed to be a modular system for travel luggage. The thought behind it that users could utilize one bag for all purposes. You start with the base backpack and then add accessories to it. There are four options that SLICKS provides based off of use. Each configuration includes a rain cover. It starts with the PACK, which is just the backpack. Then, the step up from there is the SUIT, which includes the PACK plus the Suitcover. The third configuration is the TRIP, which includes the PACK plus the Tripcover, Shirtcover, Laundrybag, and Washbag. And finally, there is the BIZ, which includes the PACK and the Suitcover, Tripcover, Shirtcover, Laundrybag, and Washbag. Each accessory is intended to expand the function of the PACK.

The PACK’s dimensions are 20.5 x 12.6 x 7.9 inches and it has a capacity of 30 liters. Completely empty, the BIZ configuration, which includes all the accessories weighs in at 6.38 pounds. While there isn’t a whole lot of information available about what the SLICKS luggage is made from my best guess is that the exterior of the PACK is made from a water resistant nylon and most of the internal components are made from a more flexible nylon. The PACK has a semi-hard shell on the front with a nicely padded back panel. There are two color choices (yellow or black) and each one has reflective material on it.

Slicks Backpack Travel System REVIEW

There are multiple pockets and compartments to use with the PACK alone, but they are a little nontraditional in style. For example, there is a sleeve/pocket for a laptop on the outside, but it doesn’t include much padding. So, while it’s easy to slip your laptop inside, it doesn’t seem to be contoured properly for a piece of computer equipment. This can easily be remedied by adding a laptop sleeve. SLICKS does include detailed illustrations on how best to use the modular system for travel, which was very helpful as I was testing this out.

USER EXPERIENCE

As it turns out, I ended up having a perfect use test for my SLICKS system. Not long after the backpack arrived, my family and I took a short overnight trip to visit out of town family. The trip was planned for only a one night stay, but there were activities like swimming and a cookout planned, which meant I had to be prepared for those circumstances. So, I got the PACK out along with all the accessories. I packed my main clothes in the Tripcover and put my personal items into the Washbag. The Washbag is meant to fit inside the Tripcover, which meant that I only had one pocket for my clothes.

Even though it was only one night, I had a change of clothes, including pants, swimming trunks, and undergarments. Even though I tend to overpack a bit, I felt that what I took was the bare minimum while still feeling prepared. That said, I had somewhat of a hard time getting all my clothing stuffed into the one pocket of the Tripcover. The Washbag was suitable for my toothbrush, toothpaste, body wash, and shampoo, but I had a little difficulty when it came to packing my electric razor. It wouldn’t fit well in the Washbag so I placed it elsewhere in the PACK. In addition to the razor being an issue, I found that my medications had to go into a separate bag as well.

Slicks Backpack Travel System REVIEW

I did pack my laptop inside the back compartment and my power supply and cable went into one of the inside pockets. I ended up having room for a second pair of shoes (sandals) and a few other items by using the outside front compartment. Because the PACK is soft-sided for the most part, when you stuff dirty clothes into the mesh pocket on the inside, it takes space away from the outside compartment. This made the PACK a bit restrictive when it came to repacking after the trip.

Because I had the PACK fully loaded, it was quite heavy. That said, as a backpack, it wore very well. I was comfortable lugging it around and had I been in a situation where I had to walk long distances, I don’t think it would have caused me any undue stress because of the weight. One thing I did notice was that the zipper pulls are Velcro and they kept getting caught on things. This was a distraction and annoyance because they wouldn’t just stay in one place.

Slicks Backpack Travel System REVIEW

Even though I’ve seemed a bit critical of the SLICKS system, I was actually quite impressed with it. There were some things that I felt didn’t work for me very well, but that had more to do with  how I packed and not the performance of the SLICKS luggage. I think if a particular user was going to take an overnight business trip, SLICKS works  perfectly for the essentials. I love that it’s well within carry-on baggage guidelines (9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches). I wouldn’t hesitate to use it as a carry-on because there are so many uncertainties with travel. You could end up with lost luggage and not have things you need. Fortunately, the SLICKS system ensures that you can still have one or two days worth of clothing along with all the basic items you need. Personally, I think this SLICKS bag is the  ideal carry-on bag because of its versatility. Is the  only bag I would travel with? Probably not — especially if I was going to be gone for an extended period of time, but I would use it as my emergency bag. It’s made very well and looks great.

MOSCOW UNVEILS COMPUTER SYSTEM

By Theodore Shabad Special to The New York Times

MOSCOW UNVEILS COMPUTER SYSTEM

MOSCOW, May 6—The Soviet Union and its East European allies have unveiled their new unified system of computers at a Moscow exhibition, including a machine capable of 500,000 operations per second.

The Most powerful computer in the series, with a speed of two million operations a second, is still in the design stage.

The display, which opened Friday at the Soviet capital's permanent Exhibition of Economic Achievements, is the first comprehensive showing of the results of a cooperative development of computers, peripheral equipment and other mathematical machines that began three years ago.

‘ The new computer series, variously known as Ryad, or “Series” and as ES, for Russian words meaning “Unified System,” is designed to solve a critical shortage of computers in the Soviet bloc, which has been lagging far behind the Western countries in this field.

The Soviet‐bloc system was made compatible with International Business Machines’ 360 Series to open the way for the importing of some computers from the West. Strategic controls still prohibit the sale of very powerful Western computers to the Soviet Union and its allies.

Plans Exports

The Soviet Union, however, also appears eager to enter the world computer market with some of its smaller machines in the new series, directing its export offers primarily to the developing countries.

The latest Western effort to interest the Soviet Union in the importation of computers was made by Frank Borman, the former astronaut who recently visited Moscow as a vice president of Eastern Air Lines. Mr. Borman said in an interview that he had discussed the possible sale of computer programs applicable to airline reservations, maintenance and other uses.

The Ryad series is a system of so‐called third‐generation computers, similar to machines that were developed in the United States as long as eight years ago. Third‐generation computers rely on miniature integrated circuits incorporated into tiny crystals and chips. The first generation used vacuum tubes and the second used transistors.

The computer show, in the Chemical Industry Pavilion of the exhibition grounds, drew attention here because it included what appeared to be a prototype of the next‐to‐largest machine in the series—the R‐50 or ES‐1050, as it is variously known.

One Built in Hungary

Although some of the smaller machines of the new system are being manufactured in Eastern Europe, the R‐50 and the even bigger R‐60, still in the design stage, are to be produced in the Soviet Union.

The exhibition includes the smallest computer of the unified series, the R‐10, which has a speed of 10,000 operations per second and is being manufactured in Hungary.

The next largest, the R‐20, with a capability of 20,000 operation per sescond, was designed jointly by Soviet and Bulgarian engineers and went into production last year at two plants, in Minsk and Brest, in the Sovie tUnion's Byelorussian Republic. A similar machine, produced ini Czechoslovakia and known as the R‐20A, is capable of 45,000 operations per second.

The R‐30, a medium‐size computer with a speed of 100,000 operations per second, was designed jointly by the Soviet Union's Armenian Republic and by Poland. It is not known whether this model is in production.

2 Models for Export

Both the R‐20 and the R‐30 are being offered by the Russians for export, according to the October, 1972, issue of the Soviet monthly Foreign Trade. East Germany has been assigned production of the R‐40 model, a prototype of which has also been included in the Moscow exhibition.

Published Soviet sources differ on the capability of this machine, which had been originally conceived as having speed of 250,000 operations per second.

In addition to the computer mainframes, the Soviet exhibition also includes more than a hundred types of peripheral equipment that are being designed and produced cooperatively by the Soviet‐bloc countries.

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.
