Ahead of the #InternationalDayofHappiness, we’re here to tell you about ways to travel mindfully, the benefits of traveling mindfully, and why mindful travel equals happy travel

March 20 is the International Day of Happiness, and we’re marking the occasion by reflecting on the ways in which travel makes people happy . But how can you make sure that you get the absolute most out of your trip, by way of a meaningful experience? Mindful travel is a trend that utilizes mindfulness, a discipline with its origins in Dharmic religions, to promote complete mental and emotional satisfaction in seeing the world.

Never heard of mindful travel? Eager to learn more? Read on for more details on what it is, and for 10 ways to travel mindfully that’ll make your adventures happier than ever.

What is mindful travel?

The general practice of mindfulness involves being mentally present at a given moment, and conscious and aware of your surroundings. Mindfulness is supposed to help alleviate anxiety by curbing your thoughts about the future, as well as your reaction or evaluation of anything that just happened. Put simply, mindfulness be considered a mind set focused on the here and now, which, if you assume for traveling, gives way to an incredibly fulfilling, happy experience of visiting somewhere.

There’s a second way to think of mindful travel, which is more about the effect on your environment than that on yourself. Being considerate is at the core of this second concept, to make sure that your adventures are as responsible and sustainable as can be. For this reason, this idea of mindful travel is often equated with ecotourism .

Why travel mindfully?

For your own benefit, mindful travel means that you’re slowing down to appreciate the finer details of what’s going on around you. You’re not charging from one city to the next with the sole intention of ticking more places off your list. Instead, you’re savoring your travel experience, which leads to further curiosity about your destination, and the happiness that comes with discovering somewhere new is perpetuated seemingly effortlessly. You return home feeling happy, relaxed, and more fulfilled, having learned meaningful things about yourself and the world.

When considering the environment, traveling mindfully encompasses mitigating your carbon footprint, doing your bit against commodification and consumerism, supporting ordinary people, and keeping nature beautiful. It means:

• spending money in a way that benefits the local community
• being respectful of local laws, customs, infrastructure, people and animals
• learning basic phrases in the local language
• using public transport
• conserving water and energy, and
• ditching single-use plastics. In other words, invest in a good reusable water bottle!

Now you’ve got the gist, read on to find out how traveling can make you truly happy; these are the 10 best ways to practice mindful travel.

1: Try mindfulness ahead of your trip

If you’ve never practiced mindfulness before, you should make the effort to get to know what it feels like before you take your vacation. Take a walk in the park, or visit a place near to where you live that you haven’t been to before, and try to take in everything around you — sights, sounds and smells. When you’re having a conversation with someone, make sure you’re concentrating fully on what they’re saying and don’t let yourself be distracted. Think of mindfulness as a muscle that needs to be trained, and if you exercise it at home, it’s more likely to work to your advantage when you’re traveling and out of your comfort zone.

2: Pack light, and well in advance

Pack only the bare essentials. Physical baggage equals mental baggage; the less stuff you take away with you on your trip, the freer you’ll feel, and the fewer worries you’ll have about losing valuable possessions. When you’re trying to exercise your senses to focus on the little things in your environment, you’ll realize just how little you actually need by way of material things. It’s a good opportunity to dress down, stop being as preoccupied with the way you look, and relinquish the gadgets that distract you so much in your day-to-day life.

Moreover, get yourself organized ahead of your holiday — sort out your documents, cash, cabin liquids, and practical clothes — to avoid beginning your journey by stressing out. The process of air travel itself is also a good time to practice mindfulness, from sitting in the airport and wondering where passers-by are headed , to looking out of the airplane window at the busy world below.

3: Let go of your expectations

We’ve all seen those Insta-perfect photos of famous sights at popular destinations that look paradoxically thin-on-the-ground with tourists, and maybe this is even the kind of material that inspired you to take your trip. Be aware that the surroundings of that building, monument, square — whatever it may be — probably won’t be like that in reality. In other words, don’t arrive with high expectations and try not to force a euphoric travel experience; this sort of feeling is more likely to come naturally with mindfulness.

It’s also a better idea not to draw up a detailed plan of everything you want to see and when. You’ll only concern yourself with getting through the itinerary, rather than stopping to appreciate your surroundings. Losing track of time means you’re doing mindful travel right.

4: Put your phone on silent mode

As mentioned above, we really don’t recommend taking any gadgets that you don’t absolutely need with you on your mindful travels. But it’s understandable that you’ll take your phone, at least to be able to know the time, navigate, and contact someone in an emergency. Make an effort to switch off from the usual digital distractions you have at home — incessant messaging, social media, et cetera — and putting your phone on silent will help with this. Remember, now you’re in your own little world.

5: Find mindful activities to do

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in a new environment is to find things to do that aren’t necessarily geared towards tourists that will open your eyes and mind to your host culture. This is doubly great when it comes to mindful travel as you’re also probably going to be benefiting the local community in some way. What’s more, you might even meet some really interesting people! Here are some opportunities to look out for:

• Choosing a homestay for accommodation
• Volunteering for a local charity
• Attending a workshop teaching a local craft or skill
• Visiting a place of worship (just remember to act respectfully)
• Seeing a wildlife conservation site
• Eating local food at an independent café or restaurant

6: Be curious and grateful

It’s pointless trying to gain a deeper understanding of the world if you don’t have the curiosity about it to begin with. Being mindful and being curious kind of go hand-in-hand, so it’s simply a case of putting that curiosity into practice to come out of your shell. Don’t be shy, ask lots of questions, try new things, and give in to that immersive experience.

Another virtue worth dusting off is gratitude. There have been studies suggesting that active gratitude has a positive effect on one’s well-being, and you’ll be able to spot evidence of this in practicing mindful travel. We’re not just talking about saying “thank you” to the locals; rather, it’s also about taking moments to think about all the good things in your life, particularly, again, those little details in your immediate vicinity. Be grateful for every experience in the present, and for the overarching fact that you’re on your trip, meanwhile, others aren’t as fortunate to be able to travel.

7: Take fewer photos

The best moments in life happen without a camera, as do the best moments on vacation. Or, to say the least, photo-taking doesn’t add anything of value to the here and now. Allow yourself to be consumed by happiness, curiosity, gratitude, and all the other good stuff we’ve talked about here, without trying constantly to snap the best picture.

If you really do want some photos to look back on, a disposable camera makes a good compromise. Get the pictures developed once you get back home — it’ll be a nice surprise to see how they turned out! Okay, they might not be the most hashtag-aesthetic things you’ve ever produced, but they’ll be rawer, more real, more representative of how you experienced those very moments.

8: Write a journal

Instead of taking photos, why not write down everything you learn on your trip? Document your thoughts and feelings on the places you visit, the things you do, the people you meet, and how it’s all making you grow as an individual. Compared with photos, you can be a lot more expressive of your inner self with words, and it’s likely that you’ll make more sense of those words when you come to reading back on your trip in the future. Don’t feel the need to write in your travel journal every day (the sense of obligation isn’t mindfulness’s best friend) — just as you see fit, for you.

9: Meditate

Being in a relaxed state of mind will make you more receptive to what’s going on around you in the present, and it renders you incredibly likely to take a happy, optimistic approach to your travels. Don’t worry if you’re not used to meditating or if you won’t have the physical space for it when you’re traveling; at least half of meditation is about simply focusing on your breathing. Try taking these short steps just a couple of times a day for a couple of minutes:

• Stand or sit comfortably.
• Start breathing slowly, in through your nose for three seconds, and out through your mouth for three seconds.
• Focus on maintaining this breath cycle, turning your attention to how the air feels physically as it passes through you.
• Let go of as many thoughts and emotions as you can as you breathe out.

Think of the process as hitting ‘restart’ on yourself. Now you’re ready to take in the world again.

10: Offset your carbon footprint

Has anyone else used this site? I just used them for a trip to Gran Canaria Spain and they put thousands of dollars of fraudulent charges on my credit card. They never paid the resort their fee for my lodging, I had to when I arrived, but they had charged my card months before. Then they continued to run charges on my card for a couple of months in the thousands. Mastercard credited it all back to me, but have they scammed anyone else?

Have been using http://www.happygaytravel.com services few years for our holidays to Gran Canaria, Ibiza and Mykonos. Never had any problems. Great service, very helpful, always made the best offers.

This looks like some kind of competitors blackmailing.

I recommend you do not use this site. We booked a Gran Canaria holiday months in advance. We paid in advance and two days before we left they emailed saying they had a computer mistake. They said they booked another hotel for us but when we showed up at that hotel they did not have the reservation. We frantically contacted happy gay travel on their emergency line - no one answered. We were forced to pay for a room. We then contacted them via email and phone. They said "we are on holiday" and haven't heard from them since. We now have to contact the police to get our money back

Why would you contact police to get money back. If service or goods are not provided and paid for by credit card, your card issuers are the people to handle the matter.

See you are a first time poster here and would encourage you to write some reviews of the positive aspects of your travels too. Many people find this site to air a grievance but never contribute further. Some view those single posts with doubt.

The journey of K K Travels began in the year 1988 with Kedar S Kasar in the driving seat. He set out with one car but with a drive to succeed in the race.

It was a challenge to meet the requirements of the customers with just one car at the disposal. But the sincerity to serve did not go unnoticed and soon the company was associated with corporate clients.

Tie-ups with some esteemed multinational & large and small national companies followed and K K Travels became a force to reckon with on the road.

The Brand “K K Travels” got recognition and was further developed with sheer hard work.

The company’s cars and buses were now hired on call as well as yearly contract basis. What put it ahead in the fiercely competitive marketplace was uncompromising hard work, punctuality, safety, periodic renewal of fleet and excellent friendly back office support.

In 1995, the company rolled out air-conditioned buses for Pune – Mumbai (CSIT) airport and Pune airport transfer. The highlight of the service was residence pickup and drop within Pune City and adjoining areas.

The strategy was same; starting with a single schedule and one bus and later expanding to hourly to and fro departures between Pune and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Terminal ( Mumbai Airports )and vice versa.

The success was repeated in 2006 in Nashik city with pickup and drop facility between residence and airport. It now has daily 12 departures from both sides.

That same year in June, the company started providing a bouquet of tours and travel services that included Air Ticketing, Holiday Tours (Domestic & International), Hotel Booking, Passport & Visa Assistance; Currently run under the brand www.kktravelsonline.com.

The next year, the company shifted gears from Bus Service to Hourly Shared Cab Services for Airport transfers to meet the heavy demand for departures at shorter intervals and unfriendly traffic conditions in Pune and Mumbai Cities.

The journey so far has taken the company places with a fleet of 300 cabs and own offices in Pune, Mumbai and Nashik . All the offices are operational round-the-clock. The bookings are done online with the Pune, Mumbai and Nashik offices connected with a Server stationed in Pune.

Despite the growth, the motto still remains delighting the customers on their journeys, no matter how long or short that be.

K’gari, mainly known as Fraser Island and meaning ‘paradise’, is the largest sand island in the world, covering an area of 184,000 hectares and stretching over 120kms.

Comprised of ancient sand dunes, unique rainforests, and crystal clear freshwater lakes, this World Heritage site is natural beauty at it’s best. Located off the Eastern Queensland coast, accessible by a short ferry ride from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Bay. There are no roads on the Island, so the only way to travel is by 4WD.

The island has over 100 freshwater lakes, including the iconic Lake Wabby and Lake Mckenzie. Both are breathtaking in colour and surrounded by white powdery sand and lush forest. Scenery on Fraser is both stunning and unique, with striking sand cliffs running along stretches of uninterrupted white beaches. Rainforests over 200 metres high grow out of sand dunes – the only place in the world where you’ll ever see this.

Explore the untamed wilderness, float in crystal clear waters and take a 4WD adventure across sand dunes for an unforgettable experience! There’s camping, adventuring, and lot’s of exploring ahead. Travel down a 70-mile beach, pass through 200m tall king ferns, spot wild dingoes and meander down sparkling creeks.

Maheno Shipwreck

As if driving up 75 Mile Beach with the ocean on one side and rainforest on the other wasn’t enough, Fraser Island throws a shipwreck on the beach as well.

At 5000 tonnes and 400 feet in length, the SS Maheno is by no means a small shipwreck either. As you drive down the beach, the wreck of the Maheno will start to appear just before you reach Indian Head. As you near closer and closer, the wreck will start dominating the visual of your windscreen. Built in 1905, the SS Maheno has got some nautical miles on the clock, and a few stories to tell. A passenger liner converted into a hospital ship upon the arrival of WWI, she’s been all over the world saving lives. Go ahead and check her and her story out for yourself. Let her do the talking while you park up and do the walking. She really is a magnificent sight to behold.

Indian Head

You can thank us later for our recommendations, but right now you need to reach for your camera and snap away. Offering 360 degree views of Fraser island and unparalleled wildlife sightings of sharks, rays, and turtles, there’s no better opportunity to frame your latest adventure.

Indian Head, found at the end of 75 Mile Beach, also known as Tuckee, meaning stone, are the famous visible rock formations formed from volcanic activity some 50 to 80 million years ago.

Lake Mckenzie

The Queen of the Fraser Island Lake game. With its sapphire blue waters, it’s easy to see why Lake Mckenzie is known as the “Jewel of the Island”.

If you’re the kind of person that enjoys swimming at the pool more than the ocean, then Lake Mckenzie is your gateway fix to taking things further. With its still calm waters filtering through silica sand, this h2o is so pure that very little life is supported, giving it swoon worthy mediterranean pool sights that you just can’t resist.

Eli Creek is a popular picnic and swimming spot along 75 Mile Beach. Deceptively powerful, the creek pours about four million liters of fresh water into the sea every hour. A pandanus fringed boardwalk along the creek leads to a bridge, making it a lovely spot to soak up the view and capture a photo of the creek running out towards the beach.

Lake Wabby Sand Dunes

K’Gari’s deepest lake, Lake Wabby is a great place to see nature in action. It’s both a window lake and the only barrage lake on Fraser, meaning the natural spring is blocked by a giant sand bank. Bordering its blue-green waters, the towering Hammerstone Sandblow engulfs the lake by about a meter per year, a testament to the constantly evolving landscape.

From the lake car park, it’s about a 40 minute hike to the lake, but the journey is mostly uphill on soft sand, so it’s best to start early before the strong heat of the day. If you’re feeling less energetic, you can climb to a lookout with amazing views of the landscape.

Once you arrive at the lake, you can cool off with a refreshing dip. Don’t be surprised if you feel something nibbling your toes; this is the only lake on the island that supports fish, and they like to help exfoliate your feet.

Is there anywhere on Fraser Island that you cannot travel?

Fraser Island recommends to not drive on the sand dunes and keep to the formed tracks when entering beach camping areas. Also beach driving is not permitted in the no vehicle zones which include between Towoi Creek & Sandy Cape Lighthouse, between Moon Point & Hook Point on the western beach, and between Waddy Point & Middle Rocks (south Waddy Beach).

Do I need a permit to camp on Fraser Island?

Yes, camping permits are required for all camping on the island, except in privately run camping areas.

Are fires permitted on Fraser Island?

No, campfires are prohibited on Fraser. This is to prevent burn injuries, escaped camp fires becoming wildfires, reducing rubbish and environment scars, reduce the risk of introduced pests and diseases, and prevent impacts of firewood on the ecology.

'Conan O'Brien Must Go' is side-splitting evidence of life beyond late night TV

To be honest, when I first heard Conan O'Brien was ending his TV talk show in 2021, I assumed news that he might turn to variety shows and online programs to continue his career was some combination of face-saving and wishful thinking.

But after watching the four episodes of his new Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , it's now obvious — even to a thickheaded critic like me — that leaving late night TV really was liberating for O'Brien. He's leveraged his unique sensibility into several different podcasts, a deal with Sirius XM , specials featuring other stand-up comics and now this travel series for Max — which resembles jokey specials he did for cable channel TBS back in the day.

And as the late night TV genre crumbles under sagging viewership and the decline of traditional media, O'Brien's renaissance also provides an example for the future — where fertile comedy minds and talented performers can spread their work over a much larger canvas.

O'Brien already made a splash recently with his brilliantly maniacal appearance on the interview-while-eating-hot-wings show Hot Ones , slobbering over hot sauces while claiming, as he was checked over by a fake doctor, that "I'm fine! I'm perfectly f*****g fine!"

This is the place where O'Brien shines — he's called it "this strange phantom intersection between smart and stupid" — and it's on full, freakish, super silly display in every episode of Conan O'Brien Must Go .

The conceit of the show is pretty simple. O'Brien heads overseas to visit average folks in Norway, Argentina, Thailand and Ireland who had once Zoomed in to speak with him on the podcast Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan . Sometimes the visits seem like a surprise — he catches one aspiring Norwegian rapper in shorts and Crocs after popping up on his doorstep — and others seem a bit more planned, including his visit to a radio show with about four listeners in Buenos Aires.

Each episode begins with a solemn monologue which sounds like it is delivered by the film world's most eccentric voice, German filmmaker and actor Werner Herzog (he's not credited in the show and when asked, a publicist at Max shared a quote from O'Brien: "I can neither confirm nor deny the voice in question.")

The torturous accent by "Herzog" makes every line sound absurdly hilarious, describing O'Brien as "the defiler ... with dull, tiny eyes ... the eyes of a crudely painted doll ... he scavenges in distant lands, uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition and the occasional selfie."

Now that's smart. And oh so stupid.

Fans of O'Brien's Conan Without Borders specials on TBS already know what his style is when he tackles a travel show — throwing himself into outrageous reactions and situations while working his quirky brand of improvised conversations with hapless bystanders.

In the Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , that includes O'Brien offering screechy vocals onstage during a performance of a Norwegian emo/rap band. Or asking provocative questions of a couple therapist/sex expert. Or getting beat up in a "fight" with a 10-year-old boy in a bar.

It's all an excuse for O'Brien to unleash his energetic wit, taste for silly absurdity and skill at drawing laughs from sympathetic — if often befuddled — strangers. But what amazes in a larger sense is how O'Brien has turned his sensibility into a comedy brand to fuel work on many different platforms. And, at age 60, with more than 30 years as a comedy star, he's been released from the shackles of any genre to shine wherever he chooses — whether it's an episode of Hot Ones or a streaming service which sometimes looks like a collision between True Detective and 90 Day Fiancé .

Leaving late night TV as late night left him

I'm old enough that I started covering TV not long after O'Brien made his first move from the shadows of life as a comedy writer – he worked on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons — to succeed David Letterman in 1993 as host of NBC's show Late Night (now hosted by Seth Meyers). Back then, NBC gave O'Brien years to figure out the show, honing his smartly serious comedy in a way that would inspire then-teenage fans like Seth Rogen and Bill Hader .

O'Brien left NBC after a disastrous deal where the network tried to make him host of its venerated late night program The Tonight Show and also keep its former host Jay Leno at the network. He moved to a late night show on TBS in 2010, but even then, there was a sense that his creativity was a bit hemmed in by the format.

After 28 Quirky Years, Conan O'Brien Is Leaving Late Night

By the time he left his TBS show Conan for good, it seemed O'Brien was already caught in a trend which would hobble other late night shows — as young viewers consumed his content online and ratings on cable dropped.

Now, with a podcast and digital media company worth many millions and growing status as a TV comedy legend still willing to do almost anything for a laugh, O'Brien is proving there is a successful life beyond late night.

Does money buy happiness? A study that sought to find the answer found that the wealth of a nation’s people does correspond to their happiness. There was also a correlation between the salaries people earn and their life expectancy, and life expectancy was found to correlate with happiness.

According to a recent study , these are the top countries where people are wealthy and happy.

The study determined that there was a significant positive correlation (0.68) between average salary and happiness score, meaning that the data suggests money does, in fact, buy happiness.

A positive correlation was also shown between average salary and life expectancy (0.67) and between life expectancy and happiness (0.66).

As the happiest country for many years now, the average salary is about $2,860 a month. This is enough in Finland for a nice lifestyle, and you can expect to live an average of 82.52. There are only seven billionaires in this highly wealthy society.

Another seven billionaires live in Denmark, and the people have comfortable salaries. They average $3,634 a month in salary. Danish people have long lives, with an average life expectancy of 82.03.

Netherlands

This is the only non-Nordic country out of the top five on the happiness scale. It has 10 billionaires and a life expectancy of 82.58. They also enjoy an average salary of $3,470.

Sweden has 26 billionaires and one of the highest life expectancies on this list- 83.65. People in Sweden have a smaller average salary than the Netherlands at $2,712, but they have the same happiness rating.

Many things make the Nordic countries so happy, and high salaries are one of them. In Norway, the average salary is $3,418, and the citizens reach an average age of 83.55.

Switzerland

Switzerland has a very high cost of living, but it also has the highest average salary on this list at $6,639. This wealthy company has 78 billionaires, and the country has a life expectancy of 84.38, the highest on this list.

This tiny country has a lot of wealth. There’s only one billionaire, but the salaries are high at $5,378. People live an average of 82.75 years in this very happy country.

New Zealand

This jewel of an island country has two billionaires and a very high life expectancy of 83.16. The average salary is $2,910 which is enough for the country to have a high happiness score.

With 11 billionaires and an average salary of $2,596 in this historic country, the country has enough wealth to give it a high rating on the happiness scale. Its people live an average of 82.57 years.

Australia is full of wealth from its 43 billionaires to its average salary of $3,431. The people in the Land Down Under are also among the longest-lived at 83.73 years, leading to a happy society.
