Peter Gabriel in at the Paris Accor arena.

Peter Gabriel review – haunted new songs have fans punching the air

Accor Arena, Paris It’s not just the dependable hits that delight the audience as the venerable prog-popper rolls out his first set of fresh material for 21 years

I t is 51 years since Peter Gabriel elevated Genesis from a burgeoning cult band to the stuff of music press covers by unexpectedly taking the stage at a Dublin gig clad in his wife’s Ossie Clarke dress and a fox’s head. It was a long time ago – “when dinosaurs roamed the earth and me and Tony both had hair,” as he puts it tonight, casting a glance in the direction of bassist Tony Levin’s shining pate – but clearly a lesson from that evening stuck with him. If you’ve got a tough sell on your hands – and tricky 22-minute songs played by reticent public schoolboys were never likely to elbow Bowie and Marc Bolan from the front pages in 1972 – it helps to dress it up.

So it is with Gabriel’s current tour. It’s not so much that the show is long, although the two sets top out at more than two hours. It’s that half of the 20 songs he performs are new, the contents of his first album of fresh material in 21 years, i/o, which may or may not come out at the end of this year. Some of them have trickled out online – Gabriel has been releasing a new song every full moon – but half of them have not.

It’s a risky business – in 2023, arena gigs by rock stars of Gabriel’s vintage tend to lean on the greatest hits, not stuff no one in the audience has heard before – but Gabriel has form here. A decade ago, he opened shows on his world tour by playing a new song he hadn’t actually finished writing, with the house lights up. Tonight, he frames the new material in elaborate staging – screens of various shapes and sizes rise and fall, one sequence features Gabriel and his backing band performing seated around a camp fire, another has him performing behind a vast, rather prophylactic-looking length of clear plastic that suddenly and repeatedly turns opaque, casting the singer in silhouette, or functions as a kind of see-through cinema screen, overlaying him with projections – and tees up the songs with lengthy explanations, delivered in halting French to the Parisian crowd. As far as a non-francophone can gather, one song might be about AI, another may have something to do with meteorites.

Peter Gabriel in Paris

He intersperses them with the Peter Gabriel songs everyone knows. The set is light on deep dives and early material: only an encore of Biko and the closing Solsbury Hill, which still sounds like the first warm day of an English spring nearly five decades on, survive from his initial brace of eponymous albums. It’s heavy on the singles from 1986’s 6m-selling So. Sledgehammer has the 73-year-old busting some surprisingly boyband-ish dance moves – it’s unclear whether he’s doing this with a raised eyebrow or simply lost in the music and the song’s famously lubricious tone – while an authentically moving version of Don’t Give Up features the night’s most simple yet striking bit of theatre: while vocalist Ayanna Witter-Johnson sings the choruses originally performed by Kate Bush, Gabriel sits slumped on the drum riser, head bowed, as if their desperate pleading isn’t getting through to him.

In fact, the tracks from So don’t seem to be there merely as an insurance policy. Their sound seems to complement that of Gabriel’s synth-heavy new material, which, if it’s noticeably more serpentine than Red Rain or Big Time, is also less dense and more direct than the contents of 2002’s Up. i/o finds him ruminating on the simple pleasures of walking a dog and connecting with nature; Four Kinds of Horses is a surprisingly gentle vision of environmental apocalypse. A lot of it feels haunted by mortality, not least the beautiful And Still, which reflects movingly on Gabriel’s relationship with his mother, who died in 2016.

Moreover, the new material appears to be going over well with the audience. Certainly, there’s no noticeable stampede for the lavatories and the bar when a hitherto-unknown song appears. In the stalls, one excitable fan reacts to the songs’ climaxes by punching the air in triumph, middle fingers raised, as if he’s watching Limp Bizkit. It’s a peculiar response to Peter Gabriel singing about environmental catastrophe, or his late mum, or indeed walking his dog, but if nothing else, it feels proof that the gamble his new tour represents – “ une expérience live atypique ” as Gabriel puts it during one of his halting speeches – is paying off.

“It’s been a while and I am now surrounded by a whole lot of new songs and am excited to be taking them out on the road for a spin,” the singer said. “Look forward to seeing you out there.

Genesis, the prog-rock outfit of which Gabriel was a founding member, recently sold their publishing rights and master recordings in a $300 million deal with Concord Music.

The deal gives the company ownership of the solo career catalogue of Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, as well as the music they recorded together as a band. Music from their period with Gabriel or his solo material, however, was not part of the sale.

Peter Gabriel Announces 2023 Tour

by Tina Benitez-Eves November 8, 2022, 11:20 am

For the first time in nearly a decade, Peter Gabriel announces an official solo trek outside of North America. The singer returns to Europe and the U.K. in 2023 for his “i/o The Tour,” which supports his forthcoming album of the same name.

Videos by American Songwriter

The tour, which kicks off on May 18, in Krakow, Poland, and concludes on June 23, in Dublin, Ireland, consists of 22 shows across U.K. and Europe.

“It’s been awhile and I am now surrounded by a whole lot of new songs and am excited to be taking them out on the road,” Gabriel said in a statement. “Look forward to seeing you out there.”

Gabriel previously teamed with Sting on the road in 2016 for the pair’s “Rock Paper Scissors” trek. He last toured solo in 2014 with the “Back to Front Tour,” which commemorated the 25th anniversary of his fifth album,  So . He released his most recent album of new, original material in 2002 with Up . In 2010, Gabriel unveiled a covers albums Scratch My Back , followed by 2011’s New Blood , a collection of orchestral re-recordings of songs spanning his career.

Though a release date for  i/o  hasn’t been announced, more details of the album are forthcoming. Earlier in 2022,  Gabriel said he had a number of new songs he was “trying to get finished” and initially planned to release something by the end of 2022. In 2021, Gabriel posted a series of photos featuring himself with longtime drummer Manu Katché, guitarist David Rhodes and bassist Tony Levin, at his Real World Studios in Wiltshire, England.

Gabriel also shared that he and his band worked on 17 songs in 10 days.

“I’m excited by what is being cooked at the moment,”  said Gabriel when he first began teasing new music in 2020. “I have been slowed down quite a lot by lockdown. We’ve not been able to have Dickie [engineer Richard Chappell], but I have enough songs that I like, to make a record I’m proud of.”

Peter Gabriel Concert Review: Music, Story-Telling, Visuals & More

peter gabriel tour 2023 vorgruppe

Peter Gabriel (r) with Tony Levin, on the tour’s opening night, May 18, 2023

On the rise of each month’s full moon, since January of this year, Peter Gabriel has released a song from i/o , his first album of all new songs since 2002. On October 8, 2023, at the Client Pledge Arena, his Seattle-area fans were treated to live performances of 11 of those songs. Gabriel has always challenged his audience to explore his new music but 11 new songs is a lot to ask. Turns out that it wasn’t, however, as these tunes are woven into Gabriel ’ s rich catalog of work like a warm blanket.

Hanging over the stage is a giant clock with a silhouetted crew member erasing the big hand and immediately redrawing it one minute closer to showtime. At 8:00 p.m., Gabriel, wearing a flat cap and double-breasted brocade jacket, walks onto the stage alone. Referencing the clock, he talks of time being “the big boss” that “has us all in its claws.” He jokes to the audience that maybe they are seeing an avatar of himself that happens to be 20 years older and 20 kilograms heavier than the real Peter Gabriel, who is far away soaking up the sun on some exotic beach with the body of a Greek god. It’s a good laugh before he talks through the heavy themes that will be visited during the night’s performance: the hands of time and mortality, the universe and the origins of life on earth, human connectivity to everything living and dead, the existential threat and vaunted promise of artificial intelligence.

Gabriel segues softly from cosmic ideas to music as his long-time cully, bassist Tony Levin, joins him center stage to sit around the warm glow of a campfire. They kick off the night with an earthy version of “Washing of the Water.” The other band members join them, forming an intimate campfire circle as the song builds to a rousing unplugged crescendo. Sitting among this circle of talented musicians, Gabriel respectfully introduces each. There are the guys who have been by his side on tour and on albums for 40-plus years: Levin on bass, David Rhodes on guitars, Manu Katché on drums, and Richard Evans on guitar and flute. And there are the masterful newcomers: Ayanna Witter-Johnson (cello, piano, vocals), Marina Moore (violin, viola, vocals), Don E (keyboards) and Josh Shpak (trumpet, French horn, keys, vocals). The band launches into an intimate version of “Growing Up” from, Up, before moving from the campfire to the spacious three-tiered set that allowed the audience a good view of each of the nine musicians.

The first of the new songs, “Panopticon,” is preceded with a talk about the potential perils of Artificial Intelligence and the aspiration that, perhaps, the technology will be used in the best ways imaginable: advanced communication, universal education, worldwide healthcare for all, and a panoptic data stream that keeps an eye out for the evildoers. “Panopticon” is classic Peter Gabriel with a lilting melody and a buoyant chorus that showcases the driving power of veteran band members Levin, Rhodes and Katché.

Pulsing with a temperate trip-hop beat, “Four Kinds of Horses” is cinematic and dreamy, accentuated by Moore on violin in a duel with Shpak on trumpet. Another talk introduces the song, “I/O,” as Gabriel further explains his belief that everything, living and dead, shares a connection. I/O, he tells us, stands for Input/Output. It’s an easy-flowing and deeply personal song as Gabriel sings, “I’ll be laid to rest in a proper place, in the roots of an old oak tree, where life can move freely in and out of me.”

The new songs continue. “Playing for Time” is an instant classic with a sumptuous melody of piano and strings. The talks continue. Gabriel explains that “Olive Tree” is a song that alludes to mind reading and informs us of an up and coming MRI technology that translates brainwaves to video via an A/I algorithm. Gabriel’s story-telling is engaging and the concert begins to feel like a mash-up of Performance Art and a Ted Talk. Another new song, “This is Home,” is a warm and loving ode to family with a Motown-ish groove.

The finale of the first half is Gabriel’s biggest hit, “Sledgehammer.” In the wake of a set of adventurous new music and scientific revelations, it’s a jolt back to 1986, when Peter Gabriel was the biggest pop star on the planet. “Sledgehammer,” ironically, replaced “Invisible Touch” by Genesis, the band  in which Gabriel established himself, as the #1 song on the B illboard Hot 100 and went on to win nine MTV Music Video Awards. That’s a record that still stands today. With the conspicuous first blast of the trumpet, the audience jumps to its feet as Gabriel dances across the stage, playfully leading the audience to sing along to every sexual double entendre.

Watch “Sledgehammer” from the Boston show in September 2023

The second half opens with the industrial grind of “Darkness.” It’s a jarring start as nothing in the first set was as aggro as this. Appearing from behind a scrim, a parade of shadowy images of Gabriel warns of a dark side: “I’m afraid I can be devil-man, and I’m scared to be divine, don’t mess with me, my fuse is short.” ˆ That mood changes quickly as Gabriel segues to “Love Can Heal,” a gorgeous soundscape of synths and strings that debuted in 2016 while Gabriel was on tour with Sting.

Gabriel shuffles back and forth across the stage singing “Road To Joy,” a song that recalls the funk rock rhythm of “Big Time,” courtesy of keyboardist Don E playing a Keytar and Levin on his emblematic Chapman Stick bass.

The magnificent cellist, pianist and singer Ayanna Witter-Johnson has her moment to shine on “Don’t Give Up.” As Gabriel sings of the despair of a fallen man, Witter-Johnson answers back with hope, love and empathy in the duet originally made famous by Kate Bush.

Three more new songs are introduced in the second set. “The Court” speaks to the abuses of the justice system as Gabriel’s impressionistic verses give way to a definitive refrain: “And the court will rise, while the pillars all fall.” Two songs that have yet to be released are “ Live and Let Live,” a nod to the principles of Nelson Mandela set to a tune of celebration, and “And Still,” an ode to Gabriel’s mother.

Watch “Live and Let Live” as performed in Toronto

With a reference to climate change, Gabriel introduces “Red Rain,” quipping, “It seems every year the weather is getting stranger.” The fan favorite finds the band at the acme of perfection with layers of trumpet, cello, violin and keyboard fills accentuating the percussive heavy track. In an acknowledgement of his contribution, Gabriel credits Katché as the “explosive engine” of the band.

Pointing to the giant clock appearing again over the stage, Gabriel poses the question and answer, “Do you know what time it is?…it’s Big Time,” offering another opportunity to revisit the dance-rock that launched Gabriel into, well, the big time.

Watch Gabriel, live in Dublin in June 2023

Gabriel closes the show with “Solsbury Hill,” his first single after leaving Genesis and, arguably, the most defining song of his career. It is a glorious slice of pop perfection that stomps along to a 7/4 time signature and blushes with jangly guitars. As he skips joyfully across the stage, one wonders if Gabriel still gets the same heart-racing feeling that he had all those years ago when he sings about the revelation that letting go of Genesis was a risk that he had to take.

Watch “Solsbury Hill” from Madison Square Garden on the I/O tour

Before leaving the stage, Gabriel, born Feb. 13, 1950, re-introduces the band for the third, or maybe fourth, time. When they return for the encores he takes a minute to acknowledge the crew as cameras catch each of them at their posts for the audience to see. Throughout the night he has also acknowledged the individual visual artists who created the films that accompany each of the new songs. This is a man who truly appreciates and respects as equals all of the talent that surrounds him.

The first encore is “In Your Eyes.” Having some fun, Gabriel holds the mic to Levin so he can sing “in your eyes” in a very deep basso. Katché kicks in with world beat percussion while Gabriel, Levin and Rhodes do a few simple dance steps that the entire band soon joins in on. The song comes to a pique when Witter-Johnson joins Gabriel at center stage to sing the parts originally recorded by Youssou N’Dour.

The band leaves the stage again but returns to answer the audience’s call for “Biko,” the anti-apartheid anthem that established Gabriel as a human rights activist and generated a monumental impact in the apartheid resistance movement. Telling the story of Steve Biko’s death in the manner of a news reporter, Gabriel quickly has the audience singing the chorus, “Biko, Biko, Because Biko, oh Biko,” and then leads them in a chant with protest fists lifted high. “What happens now is up to you,” he says, leaving the audience to finish the song while each band member follows Gabriel off-stage, one by one, until only Katché’s tom-tom beat remains. It is a solace ending to an enlightened evening of music, story-telling, visual art and the very welcome return of Peter Gabriel.

About Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel first came to international prominence with the success of Genesis, a band that he co-founded while still at school. Since leaving Genesis in 1975, his recording career has included eleven studio albums, film soundtracks for Alan Parker’s ‘Birdy’, Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ and Philip Noyce’s ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’ as well as numerous live albums. His wider musical career has included multiple Grammy Awards, the world-renowned Real World Studios, the formation of the Real World Records label, and in 1980 the creation of WOMAD, the festival that has launched the careers of many artists from around the world and has just celebrated its 40 th anniversary.   Peter Gabriel co-founded the human rights organization WITNESS (Witness.org) in 1992, the organization that pioneers the use of cameras and technology in human rights campaigning, and in 2007, alongside Sir Richard Branson, he founded The Elders (theelders.org) which was launched by Nelson Mandela.  In 2006, Peter Gabriel was awarded the prestigious Man of Peace title by The Nobel Peace Laureates and in 2008 was also included in the Time 100 list. He has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice. He remains engaged in a wide variety of tech-based businesses throughout a variety of creative industries.
