Steve Stricker says winning is “getting harder and harder.” One would never know it by his body of work on the PGA Tour Champions in 2023.

The 56-year-old Madison resident won for the sixth time this year when he held off K.J. Choi on Sunday for a one-stroke victory in the Sanford Invitational in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The $300,000 first-place prize money pushed Stricker’s 2023 earnings to $3,956,127, a single-season record on the Champions tour. Bernhard Langer previously held the record, with $3,677,359 in 2017.

Stricker, the defending champion, closed with a 4-under 66 and finished the 54-hole tournament at 16-under 194, breaking the previous record of 196.

He led by two shots after Choi, playing one group ahead, failed to save par from behind the 18th green. Stricker also bogeyed, three-putting from long distance after his wedge from 120 yards came up short, but his final putt was a stress-free tap-in for the one-stroke margin of victory.

“Kind of limped in there on the last hole, but I knew I had a couple shots to play with,” he said. “It was a battle. Always on these Sundays trying to win a golf tournament is a battle, not only your emotions, the game, everything, you know, just trying to get it done. But it’s so rewarding when you do it.”

It was Stricker’s 17th victory in just 62 career starts on the Champions tour — an incredible .274 winning percentage. His worst finish this year is T-8 and he has now posted 19 consecutive top-10 finishes in a streak that dates to August 2022.

His dominance is perhaps best illustrated by this statistic: in 15 starts this year, he has finished no worse than second 11 times.

When asked if he was getting “better and better,” though, he said, “I don’t know. It’s getting harder and harder, really. Our bodies, it gets harder and harder to get loose, to swing at it with speed, so you’ve got to continue to work at it.”

Choi closed with a 65 and posted a 15-under 195 total. Joe Durant shot a 68 and was another two strokes back, in third alone, at 197.

Madison’s Jerry Kelly made a hole-in-one on the par-3 17th, shot a 67 and finished T-12 at 8-under 202. He was joined there by five others, including Madison native Mario Tiziani (69).

Stricker trailed Choi by two shots on the back nine but drew even with an eagle on the par-5 12th. He moved out in front when he got up and down for birdie from a greenside bunker on the short par-4 15th, rolling in a 5-footer.

Choi pulled into a tie again with a birdie on No. 16, but Stricker moved in front to stay when he hit a wedge from 98 yards to six feet on the same hole and rolled the birdie putt into the heart.

Stricker coaxed in a 4-foot downhill putt for par on 17 and striped a drive on the 18th. After Choi bogeyed ahead of him, all he had to do was hit the green and he could afford to three-putt, which he did.

“I saw that K.J. made bogey there and I knew I could make bogey and win,” he said. “I wanted to get it up on the top shelf just to give myself an easier two-putt, but I’ll take it. … Again, it’s a lot of fun. I didn’t hit the shots like I wanted to at times and that’s what keeps you grinding, keeps you working at it, trying to improve, but ultimately I got it done, which is really cool.”

Stricker’s 17th Champions tour victory keeps in him 17th place on the all-time win list. He became the third player since 2000 to win six or more times in a single season, joining Langer (seven in 2017) and Larry Nelson (six in 2000).

In becoming the first three-time winner of the Sanford International, Stricker also extended his lead in the Charles Schwab Cup standings to $2,065,705 over No. 2 Langer, who closed with a 64 and finished fourth at 198.

“I saw him creeping up the leaderboard, so I knew he was coming,” Stricker said. “Just another reason why this victory means even more to me. It kind of pads my lead on that Schwab Cup a little bit and it’s something I’m looking forward to trying to cap off at the end of the year.”

Stricker was entered this week in the PURE Insurance Championship at Pebble Beach, but withdrew Monday.

Next up for Stricker, then, is a trip to Italy, where he’ll be an assistant captain on the U.S. Ryder Cup team, which will attempt to win the Cup for the first time on foreign soil since 1993. The 44th Ryder Cup is scheduled for Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 at Marco Simone Golf Club, on the outskirts of Rome.

PGA Tour Champions to resume late-July with 13 events in 15 weeks

The PGA Tour Champions is set for 2023 and record money will be awarded.

On Tuesday, the tour released its full schedule and a record $66 million will be up for grabs in purse money across 28 events. That’s up $4 million from 2022.

The tour will make three stops overseas, including the second event of the year, the Trophy Hassan II, which will be played in Morocco.

The one new tournament on next year’s schedule, the Galleri Classic, will be played at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. That venue notably held the LPGA’s first major of the year, the Chevron Championship, however, next year, the event will move to Houston. It’s the first time the PGA Tour Champions will play at Mission Hills since 1993.

In 1978, the first Legends of Golf was held at Onion Creek Country Club in Austin, Texas.

Two years later, the Senior PGA Tour had its first two official tournaments. Don January and Arnold Palmer won those first events.

From there, the circuit grew and in 1990, Lee Trevino became the first golfer to win $1 million in a season. In 2002, the tour was rebranded as the Champions Tour. In 2015, it took on its current name, the PGA Tour Champions.

Bernhard Langer became the winningest golfer in Champions history in 2023 when he got to No. 46, breaking a mark long held by Hale Irwin. Langer is also the top money-winner all-time on the tour.

He’s one of three players to reach the $20 million mark. Six players on this list have surpassed the $15 million mark. There are 31 at $10 million.

As you make your way through this list, keep in mind:

  • Gary Player is 90th all-time with $6,049,029
  • Jack Nicklaus ranks 147th with $3,372,207
  • Arnold Palmer is 211th with $1,765,795

There are 649 names listed in all, with Mike Balliet bringing up the rear with $736 in career tour earnings.

Steve Stricker wins 6th title, sets Champions earnings mark

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Steve Stricker holed a 20-foot eagle putt to catch K.J. Choi and then picked up a pair of late birdies that sent him to a 4-under 66 on Sunday to win the Sanford International for his sixth victory this year on the PGA Tour Champions.

Stricker earned $300,000, leaving him just short of $4 million for the year and setting a record for most money in a single season on the 50-and-older circuit.

He has not finished worse than eighth all year, and three of those six wins have come in majors on the senior circuit. He won the Sanford International for the third time.

"It was a battle," Stricker said. "Always on these Sunday when you're trying to win, it's a battle. But it's so rewarding when you do it."

Stricker started the final round with a one-shot lead but found himself trying to catch Choi, who got off to a fast start and closed with a 65.

Stricker was two behind when he hit a good tee shot down the left side of the fairway on the par-5 12th at Minnehaha Country Club, leaving him a mid-iron to 20 feet that set up his eagle. He drove into a bunker and got-up-and-down for birdie on the 15th for a one-shot lead.

On the par-5 16th, he was out of position off the tee and had to lay up. But he hit wedge to 8 feet and holed the birdie putt to stay one ahead. Choi played in the group in front of him and bogeyed the last, giving Stricker a two-shot lead and room for error.

Stricker three-putted the 18th from long range and finished at 16-under 194.

"I kind of limped it in," Stricker said. "But I knew I had a couple of shots to play with."

Choi, trying to win for the second time on the PGA Tour Champions, shot 30 on the front to set the target and didn't make a bogey until the final hole.

Joe Durant birdied his last three holes for a 68 to finish alone in third. He was followed by Bernhard Langer , who shot a 64 to finish alone in fourth.

Stricker is still three wins away from the record for most titles in a single, and only five tournaments remain on the PGA Tour Champions. For now, he has a lead of more than $2 million in the Charles Schwab Cup.

Just when you thought Bernhard Langer was done surprising people with what he could do on the golf course comes his performance at the 43rd U.S. Senior Open. The 65-year-old German, on the precipice of becoming the all-time winningest golfer in PGA Tour Champions history, cruised to a two-shot victory over Steve Stricker Sunday at SentryWorld in Wisconsin, a margin that is deceiving when he was up by seven strokes at one point early in the back nine.

With a one-under 70 on Sunday after bogeys on the final three holes, Langer posted a seven-under 277 total that gave him his 46th senior title, passing Hale Irwin, who he had shared the mark with since February. In the process, Langer won a senior major for the 12th time, and became the oldest winner of the U.S. Senior Open by eight years, passing Allen Doyle’s previous mark of being just shy of his 58th birthday when he won in 2006 at NCR Country Club.

With the win, Langer also claimed the first-place prize money payout of $720,000 from an overall purse awarded by the USGA of $4 million. Here’s the prize money payouts for each golfer how made the cut in Wisconsin.

2024 Masters prize money, purse: Payouts, winnings for Scottie Scheffler, each golfer from $20 million pool

More than history and a green jacket were on the line at augusta national on sunday.

champion tour money list 2023

Plenty of green was up for grabs at the 2024 Masters on Sunday -- not only in the form of the famed jacket awarded to the winner of this year's tournament but also in regards to the prize money being paid out from a record-setting pool. Augusta National Golf Club announced that the 2024 Masters would have a total purse of $20 million, marking a new tournament high by $2 million and the largest payout awarded to players at one of the nation's most pristine venues.

Scottie Scheffler was the greatest beneficiary of that increased purse, capturing the $3.6 million winner's share by capturing his second Masters championship in three years . Finishing 11 under with a 4-under 68 capping a tremendous tournament, Scheffler became the fourth-youngest golfer to win two green jackets and the 10th to win two in a three-year span. The $3.6 million prize is $360,000 more than 2023 champion Jon Rahm earned a year ago.

Runner-up Ludvig Åberg achieved quite a payday in his first career major championship. Pressing Scheffler down the stretch, the young Swede scored $2.16 million for second place, a larger sum than either Danny Willett (2016) or Jordan Spieth (2015) earned for winning the green jacket.

Scheffler and Åberg were not the only players set to receive significant green by week's end. In fact, the top three were set to receive seven-figure paydays, except Collin Morikawa struggled down the stretch and entered into a three-way tie with Max Homa and Tommy Fleetwood. Morikawa lost $320,000 by bogeying the last, though he increased the take-home of Homa and Fleetwood with the trio each taking home $1.04 million. This marked the first time that the Masters had five players bring home $1 million or more.

Those among the top 11 were set to see at least $500,000 deposited into their bank accounts, and the handsome payouts trickled down the leaderboard with every golfer inside the top 36 leaving Augusta National with six figures.

Here’s how much money every player made at the 2024 Masters

Scottie Scheffler won a second green jacket — and a really big check.

The 2024 Masters purse has increased significantly over the years.

Just three years ago, in 2021, the purse was set at $11.5 million. On year later, the 2022 Masters purse increased to $15 million. And last year, the 2023 Masters purse jumped yet again to a whopping total of $18 million.

And this year, the purse increased yet again , adding an additional $2 million to the pot reach an eye-popping total purse of $20 million , matching the payout at last year’s U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club. (The Players championship remains the richest purse in golf at a total of $25 million.)

This year’s Masters champion will surpass the payout received by 2023 champion, Jon Rahm, by an impressive $360,000, with a $3.6 million total payday. The runner-up will receive a cool $2.16 million, and third place will clear seven figures too, with a payout of $1.36 million.

Even the players who  missed the cut  (of which there were 29) receive a payout of $10,000 each — but that’s for the professionals only. So how much did the rest of the players in the field come away with this year? You can find a complete list of the 2024 Masters payouts for each player below.

Masters 2024 prize money: From Scottie Scheffler to Tiger Woods, what they earned

Scottie Scheffler won the Masters Tournament for the second time on Sunday at Augusta National Golf Club.

In doing so, he not only reclaimed the green jacket, he earned another $3.6 million. That puts him over $15 million in official earnings this season.

Scheffler continues his march up the PGA Tour career earnings list, moving to 10th all-time with $57.6 million. Tiger Woods, who made $39,600 after finishing last among those who made the cut, is first with $120,994,366.

Here's a look at how the $20-million Masters purse was paid out:

How much do caddies make at the Masters? Here's how their pay at the PGA tournament works.

By Khristopher J. Brooks

Updated on: April 11, 2024 / 3:54 PM EDT / CBS News

Being a caddie at the Masters is an entirely different experience than doing the job anywhere else — just ask Ken Martin.

"Caddies are treated really great at Augusta," said Martin, who caddied for Scottish golfer Sandy Lyle at the major tournament last year. "We had our own locker room. They feed us just wonderful food — the best food I've ever had really. But it's a long week. You have to be fit to get around that hilly course."

Some of the biggest names in professional golf, including Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, will converge on the famously hilly course Thursday to compete in the 2024 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. Golfers are playing for a multimillion dollar cash prize and the chance to don the coveted green jacket for a year.

Much of this year's attention will be on the cash prize the winning golfer will receive at this year's tournament. The purse for the 2023 Masters totaled $18 million, which was $3 million more than the purse the year before — the largest year-over-year increase in tournament history. Of that total, 2023 winner Jon Rahm took home $3.24 million .

But players aren't the only ones in line for a big payout. The winner's caddie can easily go home with a six-figure paycheck after four days of work. But snagging the four-day gig is the culmination of years spent working one-on-one with the same professional golfer, Martin said.

Caddies develop a strong friendship with a golfer long before it's time for an elite competition like the Masters, Martin said. Fans seated in the stands, as well those watching at home, can only see the caddie handing the player a club, but in reality, there's a constant back-and-forth communication taking place between golfer and caddie during commercial breaks and while the two are walking to the next hole, he explained. Martin, who played professionally from 1982 to 2015, now teaches the sport at Keiser University in Florida.

Aside from carrying the heavy bag, the caddie also provides input on which club to use, as well as swing technique, Martin said. That's because most caddies working PGA Tour games  are former professional players with a wealth of knowledge on the game.

But technique is only a small part of the exchange, he added. With a strong camaraderie forged over the years, it's very likely the two spend most of time chatting like old friends, he said.

"It's boring to talk about only golf for four to six hours," Martin said. "You're out there for a long time together so the friendship part of it plays a larger role."

How much do caddies make at the Masters?

Caddies like Martin earn a salary from two sources during the Masters. One part is a weekly wage between $2,000 and $4,000 depending on the caddie's experience, the Association of Professional Caddies and the Caddies Network told CBS MoneyWatch. The weekly wage helps caddies recoup financially because they're required to pay their own travel to Georgia, along with hotel and food while working the tournament.

Caddies also get a percentage of whatever their player earns after the tournament ends. The caddie of the Master's winner will get 10% of the prize money. For context, Jon Rahm won the Masters' last year and got $3.24 million.

The caddie for the runner up at the Masters will get 7% of that player's prize winnings; every caddie after that will get 5%.

Caddies Network CEO John von Stade told CBS MoneyWatch there are rare occasions when a caddie has a private contract with the player, in which case that person's salary will not follow the traditional setup.

Over the past five years, caddie have seen some positive changes. PGA Tour officials have increased caddies' weekly wages and players' prize money has also climbed — potentially giving caddies a chance to bring home six figures after a tournament.

"But what hasn't changed is, if your player doesn't make the cut, there is no other source of money other than the weekly fee," von Stade said.

champion tour money list 2023

THE WOODLANDS, Texas —  The Chevron Championship is kicking off the 2024 LPGA Tour major season this week as the world’s best players take on The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas. All of the top 10 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings are set to tee it up, as are all five of this season’s tournament champions, including world No. 1 and 12-time LPGA Tour winner Nelly Korda, who is working to collect her fifth straight LPGA Tour title in the year’s first major. Eleven past champions will also compete, most notably 2023 Chevron Championship winner Lilia Vu and Republic of Korea native So Yeon Ryu, and 12 LPGA Tour rookies are playing in their first major as LPGA Tour members, including Epson Tour graduates Isabella Fierro, Auston Kim and Gabriela Ruffels. A $7.9 million purse is up for grabs, as are 650 Race to the CME Globe points, 150 more than a regular-season LPGA Tour tournament, a worthy prize for whatever deserving champion emerges at this week’s major.

Take a look at just a few of the featured groups at the 2024 Chevron Championship, using  KPMG Performance Insights :

Thursday, 8:10 a.m.* – Jin Young Ko/Patty Tavatanakit/So Yeon Ryu

Jin Young Ko won the 2019 edition of The Chevron Championship and is looking for her first major title since winning The Amundi Evian Championship in July of that same year. In addition to that victory, she has recorded two additional top-10 finishes in this event, tying for seventh in 2021 and tying for ninth last year at The Club at Carlton Woods after posting rounds of 72-71-70-68 on the challenging layout. This week is Ko’s third start of the 2024 season, and in her previous two tournaments this year, she finished in a tie for 20th at the Honda LPGA Thailand and a tie for eighth in her title defense at the HSBC Women’s World Championship. Despite her lack of starts in 2024 and even though she’s only won two majors since joining the Tour in 2018, Ko is a player who loves the big stage of a major championship. Her 70.68 scoring average is ranked second of all players with 30 or more rounds at the majors in the last five years, according to KPMG Performance Insights. So, pay close attention to Ko this week as she’s bound to record a few numbers deep in the red at this challenging venue in The Woodlands, Texas.

Patty Tavatanakit won The Chevron Championship in 2021 as a rookie, and until she captured this year’s Honda LPGA Thailand title in her home country, that major was her lone victory on the LPGA Tour. In addition to her win in February, the 24-year-old UCLA alum has collected one other top-10 finish this season, tying for eighth at the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore, and one other top-25 result, tying for 22nd just down the road from her alma mater, UCLA, at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship. Statistically, Tavatanakit is ranked inside the top 10 on the LPGA Tour in several notable categories, including strokes gained around the green (3, +0.67), strokes gained tee to green (5, +1.50), strokes gained driving (5, +0.82) and strokes gained total (7, +1.68). She’s also eighth in scoring average and ninth in birdie-or-better percentage. She finished in a tie for 41st in this event in 2023, but considering the strength of her recent form, don’t count out Tavatanakit as a contender in Houston.

So Yeon Ryu took home her second career major title at the 2017 Chevron Championship, winning in a playoff over Lexi Thompson at Mission Hills Country Club, and will now play for the last time on the LPGA Tour at the storied event in The Woodlands, Texas. She hasn’t competed on the LPGA Tour since the 2023 BMW Ladies Championship in the Republic of Korea last October, ultimately finishing in a tie for 28th, and after struggling a bit last season, the former Rolex Rankings No. 1 knew that she’d wrap up her playing career fairly quickly in 2024. While the moment is a bittersweet one, the 34-year-old is more than ready to walk the fairways of the Tour she’s called home over the last 13 years for the final time this week at The Club at Carlton Woods as she bids farewell to her fans and friends at the 2024 Chevron Championship.

Thursday, 12:59 p.m.* – Celine Boutier/Allisen Corpuz/Ruoning Yin

This week marks Celine Boutier’s seventh start in The Chevron Championship, and the Frenchwoman finished in a tie for 14th last year in the tournament’s debut at The Club at Carlton Woods. It was her second-best finish in the major championship, only behind a tie for fourth that came in 2022 at Mission Hills Country Club, and it’s a performance that she’ll be working to build upon this week just outside of Houston, Texas. The Chevron Championship is her seventh event of the 2024 LPGA Tour season, and while she has yet to miss any cuts, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster for the 29-year-old, who began the year looking for more of what she found in her four-win season in 2023. She tied for 16th and tied for 49th in her first two tournaments of the year and then finished solo second at the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore, tying for 12th the next week at the Blue Bay LPGA. But Boutier wasn’t able to hang on to that momentum, finishing T35 and T47 at the Ford Championship presented by KCC and T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards, respectively, ahead of this week at The Chevron Championship. However, she’s still very much in form, on paper ranking in the top 20 in strokes gained tee to green per round (18, +1.08), strokes gained approach per round (18, +0.81) and strokes gained around the green per round (20, +0.39), according to KPMG Performance Insights. The Rolex Rankings No. 3 is also 11th in birdies (94), 14th in putts per green in regulation (1.74) and 22nd in strokes gained total (+1.08).

Allisen Corpuz slept on the 54-hole co-lead at last year’s Chevron Championship, sitting in a tie for first with Angel Yin after posting back-to-back 67s in the second and third rounds at The Club at Carlton Woods. While she ultimately faded to a tie for fourth on Sunday, it set the University of Southern California alum up for even more major success later in the 2023 season. Just a couple of months after playing well in The Woodlands, Texas, Corpuz became a Rolex First-Time Winner at the U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links, winning by three shots over Charley Hull and Jiyai Shin and becoming the first woman to win a professional event at the venue. And it wasn’t just in those two majors that the Hawaii native showed her mettle. According to KPMG Performance Insights, Corpuz gained the most strokes per round in major championships in 2023, picking up 2.6 shots on the field with her performances in those five tournaments. Her ball striking can be credited with that major success as she ranked first in strokes gained ball striking (+1.79), third in strokes gained approach (1.41) and fifth in greens in regulation (71.1%) per round in majors last year, making Corpuz a player to keep an eye on at this week’s Chevron Championship.

Like her groupmates, Ruoning Yin won her first major title in 2023, victoriously emerging from a crowded leaderboard at Baltusrol Golf Club’s Lower Course to capture the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, her second Tour title in just under three months. That performance is something she’ll hope to copy and paste as she readies herself for this week’s Chevron Championship at The Club at Carlton Woods, an event in which Yin recorded a ho-hum T41 finish last year, a benchmark she’s excited to better in 2024. The key to that improvement will be her performance with the flat stick as Yin lost two-tenths of a stroke to the field with her putting in the major championships in 2023, a devastating statistical blow considering she gained over a stroke with her ball striking in those five events last season. This is Yin’s second start in The Chevron Championship and is her eighth event of the 2024 LPGA Tour season, a year that’s seen a ton of consistency from the 21-year-old as she has recorded five T26 or better results thus far, the best of which is a tie for eighth at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship.

Thursday, 1:10 p.m.* – Nelly Korda/Minjee Lee/Lilia Vu

Nelly Korda will be working to pick up her fifth straight victory this week at The Chevron Championship having won in her last four starts on the LPGA Tour. After finishing T16 at the season-opening Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions, Korda collected her ninth Tour title at the LPGA Drive On Championship at Bradenton Country Club, defeating Lydia Ko in a two-hole playoff to win in her hometown of Bradenton, Fla. She took a seven-week break right after and then continued her winning ways with another playoff victory at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship, this time beating Ryann O’Toole in extra holes at Palos Verdes Golf Club to reach double-digit victories on the LPGA Tour. Korda won again the next week at the Ford Championship presented by KCC in regulation with a four-day total of 20-under, backing that up with another victory at the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards the very next week, one that saw her beat Leona Maguire 4 and 3 in the championship match at Shadow Creek. Korda is the first player since Annika Sorenstam in 2005 to enter a major championship off four straight victories, according to KPMG Performance Insights, and her recent strength of play can be attributed to her impeccable ball striking this season. She is currently ranked first in strokes gained tee to green on the LPGA Tour, picking up 2.19 shots on the field with her long game, a nearly nine-tenths of a stroke improvement from last year. Korda also leads the Tour in strokes gained total (+2.76), percentage of rounds in the 60s and par-4 scoring, and will be looking to use that combination of statistics to become the first American to win five tournaments in a row since Nancy Lopez in 1978. Her chances seem quite good as Korda has finished in the top five at The Chevron Championship in her last three appearances, tying for second in 2020, tying for third in 2021 and finishing solo third last year at The Club at Carlton Woods.

After collecting two victories in her last four starts of the 2023 season, Minjee Lee has gotten off to a quiet start thus far in 2024. She has earned just two top-15 results in four tournaments this season, tying for fourth at the Blue Bay LPGA and then tying for 15th at the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards. But statistically, the Australian is in form, currently ranking in the top 20 in both strokes gained total (20, +1.11) and strokes gained approach (2, +1.43), according to KPMG Performance Insights. Lee has 10 LPGA Tour victories to her credit, two of which are major championships, as she won The Amundi Evian Championship in 2021 and the U.S. Women’s Open at Pine Needles in 2022. This week marks her 11th career start in The Chevron Championship and her 10th since becoming an LPGA Tour member in 2015. She has earned three top-12 finishes in this event, tying for third in 2017, tying for seventh in 2020 and finishing 12th in 2022, all at the old tournament venue, Mission Hills Country Club. Lee tied for 41st at The Club at Carlton Woods last season, carding rounds of 70-75-77-69, a performance she’ll definitely be working to improve upon this year as she tries to chase down a third major victory.

Lilia Vu became a first-time major winner at the 2023 Chevron Championship after defeating Angel Yin in a playoff at The Club at Carlton Woods and is looking to successfully defend a title for the first time in her LPGA Tour career this week in The Woodlands, Texas. It’s been a mixed bag of results for the 26-year-old so far in 2024, as she has earned two top-20 finishes at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions (18) and the Honda LPGA Thailand (T7) and then had two withdrawals at the HSBC Women's World Championship and Blue Bay LPGA during the LPGA Tour’s spring Asian swing. According to KPMG Performance Insights, Vu was in much better form entering The Chevron Championship last season than she is this season – she was fifth in strokes gained total in 2023 compared to 28th in the same metric in 2024 – but the California native isn’t too worried about what her game looks like on paper. She’s instead trying to treat this week like just any other tournament and is hoping to keep expectations low as she works to recreate the magic she found in 2023 in her second title defense of the 2024 season.
