Firstly, this is the first time I have visited a comedy show live and also the first time writing a review so hopefully you will find it helpful.

I was lucky enough to have tickets at The O2 in a really good seat so that was already a winner for me. I have been to The O2 several times before so in terms of venue, I knew what we were going to be experiencing and nothing was different except Chris Rock was using Yondr Pouches to secure people’s phones. I get it! People do not appreciate anything they are seeing if they are stuck in their phones or watching through the phone screen. As for people ‘needing their phone in an emergency’ they can leave the arena and a member of staff will unlock the phone to be used then locked when re-entering the arena. So for me, there was absolutely no issue and it made the whole experience more personal and enjoyable.

Ok, the show! Chris had 3 support acts from The US with him. Jeff Ross, Michelle Wolf and Anthony Jeselnik. Jeff was up first and opened incredibly well. His use of US comedy mixing into the UK was well planned and the entire Arena loved him. Jeff also done some serious ‘roasting’ with audience members who were called on stage and I have to say - it killed me with laughter! Michelle Wolf was incredible. Her female presence really broke up the show and was very refreshing with the topics she chose and she slayed her set with the audience clearly showing their appreciation! Anthony, well, very difficult to describe what happened but every time he said something, a joke or even a comment the audience bellowed with laughter. His dry, sadistic humour was a winner in that arena and everyone enjoyed every moment!

Chris Rock! What can I say? He is one of the all time greats of stand up comedy and he was absolutely incredible from start to finish. The way Chris addresses the audience directly and engages with them is completely unique. From talking about black life, his kids, his divorce related to everyone in some form which makes it more personal and enjoyable. He was hitting joke after joke and the audience (I can talk for the block I was in) was in stitches from start to finish with no break. It was hard hitting and fast paced and he managed to link jokes from minutes ago into current ones which kept the whole show alive. His use of London knowledge, mainly Tottenham, went down a storm and people are talking about that constantly as it felt close to them. His whole persona on stage, his voice and mannerisms are funny on their own then mix it with the content of his show and it was an explosive set. Like I said, it was the first time going to a comedy show live but I can say I will definitely be going to more now and if Chris Rock comes back to the UK, I am there!! Thanks to all 4 of you for making a night out one of the best I have had! Incredible!

I have heard of Chris Rock, seen him on television in shows, in movies. I loved him in Lethal Weapon 4, he was hilarious. I was lucky enough to see him perform on stage recently. It was an amped up audience, everyone there was ready for him to come out. It was dark in the auditorium; most of the light was on stage. In the background he had a dark back drop with his initials about 10 feet high on it. When he came out on the stage the audience erupted in clapping and hooting and hollering, the air in there was awesome!

I find Chris Rock slightly funny, but I gotta admit, I was crying from laughing so hard. I wasn’t the only one that was tearing up from laughing so hard. During the whole show, he kept going and pacing back and forth, he kept the lively atmosphere going. He was so into his set, it was awesome to see! I’ve been to many comedy shows and this was one of the best comedy shows I have ever been to. My stomach hurt so bad afterwards from laughing so hard. I can’t wait until he comes to town again.

Chris Rock Plots First Stand-Up Tour in Five Years

After a five-year break, Chris Rock is making his return to the live comedy circuit with the Ego Death world tour. The trek — which will begin with a 38-date North American leg — marks Rock’s first run since his Total Blackout stand-up tour in 2017 and 2018 (at the time, that was his first tour in nearly a decade).

The Ego Death tour will begin April 2 with two shows at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The current slate of dates includes stops in Las Vegas, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Toronto, Denver, Oakland, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, and more. He’ll also play New York’s Radio City Music Hall in October and follow that show with performances in Chicago, Vancouver, and Washington D.C. before wrapping Nov. 17 in Los Angeles at the Dolby Theatre. Ticket sales begin Friday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster .

In the half-decade he’s spent off the road, Rock found creative outlets in film and TV. Last year, he joined the cast of Fargo as Loy Cannon in the show’s fourth season and starred alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Marisol Nichols in Spiral , the ninth installment of the Saw film series.

But as Rock noted in an interview with Esquire last year, he’s always thinking ahead and has kept a journal of ideas for over three decades. “You read it over, and you’re like, Oh, that’s good for stand-up. Or Oh, that would be good for script,” he said. “And then there’s some other shit, you’re like, Oh, when I die, provided I don’t fuck up my career, people are going to think this shit’s really interesting.”

2022 may very well be remembered as the year Chris Rock got slapped by Best Actor winner Will Smith at the Oscars.

In 2023, Rock will most likely be remembered for something entirely different though — on Saturday, March 4 at 10 p.m. EST, he will become the first comedian to perform live on Netflix when he takes the stage at an undisclosed venue in Baltimore to record his new special.

Titled “Selective Outrage,” Rock will most likely address the elephant in the room, too.

“People expect me to talk about the bulls–t. I’m not going to talk about it right now. I’ll get to it eventually — on Netflix,” the “Saturday Night Live” alum said at the time .

However, he’s not quite ready for the taping just yet.

To help polish his act, Rock has lined up seven shows from Feb. 3-26 to prepare for his high-stakes, historic Netflix special.

That includes a Feb. 3 gig at Atlantic City’s Borgata Casino Event Center .

Chris Rock tour 2024 announced : American comedian and actor Chris Rock announced the dates of his world tour "Ego Death", which will take place in the UK for four days in May this year. The actor, famous for his starring roles in films such as Death at a Funeral, The Week Of alongside Adam Sandler, The Longest Backyard, and the voice of Marty the Zebra in the Madagascar family favorite animated film, alongside Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith and other famous names.

Christopher Julius Rock (born February 7, 1965) is an American comedian, actor, television producer, and filmmaker.

After working as a stand-up comedian and appearing in supporting film roles, Rock came to wider prominence as a cast member of Saturday Night Live in the early 1990s. He went on to more prominent film appearances, with starring roles in Down to Earth (2001), Head of State (2003), The Longest Yard (2005), the Madagascar film series (2005–2012), Grown Ups (2010), its sequel Grown Ups 2 (2013), Top Five (2014), and a series of acclaimed stand-up specials for HBO. He developed, wrote, and narrated the sitcom Everybody Hates Chris (2005–2009), which was based on his early life.

Rock hosted the Academy Awards twice, in 2005 and in 2016. He has won four Emmy Awards and three Grammy Awards. He was voted the fifth-greatest stand-up comedian in a poll conducted by Comedy Central. Video from Quavo's concert in Bridgeport, Connecticut is floating around social media ... seemingly showing a damn-near empty venue looking more like a gig for a small-time artist than a former member of Migos .

The crowd in the pit's pressed up close to the stage ... with people in back of the clot no more than 10 or 15 rows removed from the artist.

It's a pretty bizarre scene, ya gotta say and Quavo handles it with grace ... putting on a pretty spectacular show for the lackluster audience. But, the tiny crowd has people online theorizing Chris Brown may have pulled one over on Q.

Folks online are pushing the conspiracy theory Brown bought a ton of the tickets for the show so Quavo would perform to a pretty much empty concert hall -- basically as a way to embarrass his nemesis.

Admittedly, it's a bit far-fetched ... Chris would've spent a small fortune on Quavo's show -- handing over cash to someone he hates. Stranger things have happened, we suppose.

Remember ... Quavo took the most recent shot in the duo's rap beef -- blasting CB in his song "Over Hoes & Bitches" with a bit of posthumous help from his nephew, Takeoff .

CB didn't respond to the track ... instead putting out an unrelated song with Skylar Blatt -- with no references to the beef because they recorded the track last year.

In any case, Chris has fans' minds racing ... whether he really clowned Quavo or not.

We've reached out to Quavo's team about the show ... so far, no word back.

Chris Rock took to the ether Saturday night for “Selective Outrage,” the second of two stand-up specials for which Netflix paid $40 million: an event whose specialness, not to say its costliness, was emphasized by bracketing it within a pre-show and an after-show, and by putting it out live.

(West Coast viewers got Rock a little on the early side, at 7 p.m.; back East — where the show took place, at Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theatre — a little on the late; the rest of the world — the show streamed to 90 countries — made its own accommodations.)

Had “Selective Outrage” not gone out live, a fact that Netflix could not emphasize too much, it would have been news — as indeed it had been successfully sold as such for weeks before its arrival — given that Rock was expected to address the Slap, whose first anniversary is nigh. (If you are the one person who somehow does not know, at last year’s Oscars ceremony, Will Smith attacked Rock over a bad joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith — though Rock has his own theory about that, see below.) This contretemps has refused to evaporate, perhaps exactly because the world was waiting for Rock to address it.

Outside of news and sports and awards ceremonies, live television has been something of an affectation since the 1950s: a stunt, a gimmick, occasionally an aesthetic experiment. This is Rock’s sixth special, and that the previous five were produced in the usual manner has proved no impediment to his career.

9:49 p.m. March 5, 2023 An earlier version of this review stated that “Saturday Night Live” has been on the air for nearly 60 years. The show premiered nearly 48 years ago, in October 1975.

And as in a sporting event, there was an element of unpredictability to “Selective Outrage,” even of danger, the possibility that the comedian would have to be carried off the field, figuratively speaking. (The potential for bombing is so much a part of the fabric of “Saturday Night Live,” created to put a countercultural spin on the comedy-variety shows of the ‘50s, that it has survived for nearly 50 years with a remarkably high percentage of dud bits; fans show up as they might for a team that often loses.)

The sports metaphor was underscored by the pre- and post-game analysis, as it were; by a credit sequence in which the star seemed to be girding himself for battle, not just with audience expectations and with the specter of his Oscar attacker, but, as he walked in slow motion toward the stage past echoes of earlier specials, with himself as well — and by the triumphal pose he struck at the end, stern-faced, looking not happy but vindicated.

At 58, an age at which many comedians have reached their sell-by date, Rock is not quite an old lion — his appearance remains remarkably boyish — but he hasn’t been the new kid for nigh on four decades, and even if one takes his greatness as read, there will be the question of whether he’ll retain the crown, better his personal best, say something new, keep up, change with the changing times or dominate them by the force of his own art and personality.

Formally, the special, directed by Joel Gallen (whose credits include Rock’s 2004 “Never Scared” and many live musical events and awards shows) was something of a throwback, old-fashioned television, compared with Rock’s first Netflix special, the 2018 “Tamborine,” bathed in gold light by director Bo Burnham, and his final HBO special, the 2008 “Kill the Messenger,” directed by Marty Callner, which cut between performances in New York, London and Johannesburg, frequently in the middle of a sentence, giving you a sense of just how tightly rehearsed are Rock’s routines. Where “Tamborine” found the comic in a relatively intimate setting with the audience nearly at his feet, engaging in a more modulated, reflective style of delivery, “Selective Outrage” came across as a rough-edged bid to regain old fire; he pumped up the volume, prowled the stage, charging his text with repeated words and phrases like a revival preacher, both to hammer out a point and to make music.

“I’m going to try to do a show tonight without offending nobody,” Rock said at the time of his hour (and eight minutes), as if to announce that many certainly would be. “You never know who might get triggered,” he said, before taking aim at a mix of hard and easy and occasionally confusing targets. (There’s a lot to be said about Elon Musk, but his sperm is the last tack you might imagine.)

Though he likes to downplay his intelligence and mention his lack of education, Rock is no dummy; he clearly thinks a lot — the comedian’s job, really — and his routine Saturday covered a familiar range of subjects: race, sex, the state of the nation, hypocrisy, his own childhood and his children’s, and the newer themes of being single and dating slightly younger versus much younger women. Personal responsibility has been a theme throughout Rock’s career — he can sound surprisingly conservative at times, as when discussing making sure his older daughter was expelled from high school for bad behavior — but at this stage of life, a bit of Get Off My Lawn, You Kids These Days inevitably creeps in.

Some of his targets were strangely inessential: Going after Meghan Markle for not understanding that she’d encounter racism among the royal family, felt mean and like a waste of breath, and the Kardashians, even if super-glued into popular culture, are the day before yesterday’s news. (Though bringing up Caitlyn Jenner did give Rock the opportunity to present himself as nontransphobic, which came off in some vague way as a distancing reference to his friend Dave Chappelle’s own controversial special.) “Wokeness” is already a tired subject, but public over-sensitivity is the comedian’s bugbear, after all, and, really, anyone over a certain age is bound to have had a conversation about how the world has grown cautious.

“Everybody’s scared,” said Rock, observing that, “Anybody that says words hurt has never been punched in the face. Words hurt when you write them on a brick.”

The climax of the evening — teased through the evening as he tagged jokes about Snoop Dogg and Jay-Z with the remark that he didn’t need another rapper mad at him — was something of an anticlimax by virtue of its being so expected, like the noisy battle at the end of a Marvel movie, and many of its best jokes, worked out on other stages, having already been published.

When Rock finally got to the Slap, in the special’s last minutes, he certainly leaned into it. He was funniest comparing his own physical disadvantages, but self-deprecation led to a less effective, if brutally delivered, theory of the case, which would have been quite confounding if you weren’t up on the Jada Pinkett Smith-Will Smith backstory — that Smith’s attack on him had more to do with public humiliation over his wife’s extramarital relationship than Rock’s poor joke about her — which he tied back to the opening theme of selective outrage. (He does have an essayist’s sense of structure.)

The generalization and exaggeration that are necessary to humor (as when he takes his abortion rights stand to absurd logical extremes) are balanced with common sense and fresh insights. Whether or not you buy his theories about how men are, or women are, or what makes a good relationship, or what ails the country, or even accept the premises from which he draws his conclusions, and whether or not this was his finest hour (and eight minutes) of television, Rock remains worth listening to, because there’s nothing casual about what he does, and most important, he knows how to craft and sell a joke. You may laugh even as you’re offended.
