Tempat Wisata Terpopuler di Surabaya

Tentang surabaya.

Jembatan Suramadu

A Day in Surabaya: Exploring Indonesia’s Second Biggest City

In this destination trip report, we will guide you around the sights of Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city.

After a fun train ride from Yogyakarta and a quick tour of the lovely Majapahit hotel (an absolute no-brainer if you are in Surabaya and need accommodation) it was time to explore the city.

I had only one-and-a-half day in Surabaya – with the original plan being some sightseeing in Indonesia’s second biggest city in the afternoon on day one, and making a day trip to the top of the Mount Bromo volcano on day two.

Change of plans

As I already wrote before in some earlier chapters of this trip report, my plans for this Indonesia trip changed drastically when my provisional days off from work were retracted and I had to do an afternoon shift on my laptop, therefore being bound to my hotel room.

With the Mount Bromo trip taking the entire day, it meant that I simply didn’t have enough time to make this otherwise worthwhile day trip from Surabaya.

Instead, I spent the first afternoon in Surabaya working from my hotel room, and planned to explore the city in the morning and early afternoon of day two before having to return back to the Majapahit Hotel for another work shift on my laptop.

The area directly around the Majapahit Hotel mixes the old with the new. Some of Surabaya’s most historic buildings can be found here, as well as the highest office towers with their modern steel-and-glass architecture.

When walking out of the hotel on day two, I was surprised how quiet it was. The roads were eerily quiet, there were no cars and almost no pedestrians – a huge contrast to the previous day!

I asked around why it was so quiet and was told that some city centre roads were closed off for traffic due to Indonesian Independence Day.

A friendly local told me that there would be a military parade just a few metres away from my hotel, so obviously this was where I went.

majapahit surabaya hotel

There parade took place in the street on which the historic Governor’s House is located.

Right opposite this white villa, a stand was built which was filled to the brim with Indonesian girls all dressed up in immaculate white uniforms and long blue skirts who were waving flags and cheering and chanting the entire time.

All branches of the Indonesian military, police and other civil services took part in the parade as they walked by some local bigwigs.

I have seen a few military parades before, but this one absolutely stood out for one single reason: it didn’t feel militaristic at all.

Sure, some heavy guns were towed around and many soldiers carried arms, yet it felt so peaceful.

Most soldiers were smiling rather than showing a stern look and some were even dancing! It was all jolly good fun to watch.

military parade ground

After the parade I walked a bit more around the area. It was good fun to see the soldiers all walking back to their respective trucks parked in the area to transport them to to their respective barracks.

Many soldiers happily asked me if I could take their photo before I managed to ask them if it was OK to snap a picture!

If one thing impressed me most during the entire Indonesia trip it was for sure the smiling nature and kindness of the Indonesian people.

Riverside walk

Next up I walked a bit along the river which streams through Surabaya’s city centre and explored a nearby park.

I got the impression that although there isn’t that much to see in the centre of Surabaya itself, the city did for sure feel more peaceful than chaotic Jakarta , making it rather pleasant to walk around despite the oppressive heat.

In the park, many families were out for a picnic, or to simply take a walk and buy an ice cream or some fresh juice from one of the many vendors.

surabaya governor's house

In the end it turned out that it really was not my lucky trip at all. Besides being forced to suddenly spend a lot of my time doing remote work on my laptop instead of sightseeing – I also got involved in a small accident.

I was walking along the riverbank when suddenly the pavement ended. Instead of turning back, I decided to continue my walk at the side of the busy road.

Suddenly an oncoming motorbike crashed into a cyclist and in their fall they took some 10 to 12 other motorbikes down with them in a giant crash.

One of the bikes involved in the pile-up then crashed into me, causing me to fall hard on the road. My legs were all bloody from multiple scratches and abrasions and one of my arms hurt like hell.

It wasn’t anything too serious as I quickly realised that I hadn’t broken a limb, but it was still quite a painful fall. I decided to head back to the hotel to clean my wounds and to take it easy for the remainder of the day.

Unfortunately, in the late evening my legs and arm still felt painful, so I decided to stay in the hotel and order room service instead of finding a nice restaurant on my last evening in Indonesia.

surabaya street

Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to see and do a lot in Surabaya due to unforeseen circumstances so I might not be in the best ever position to give a definite opinion about Indonesia’s second biggest city.

Surabaya seemed to be a lively, modern city with a nice vibe and friendly people. I for sure enjoyed watching the military parade for Indonesian Independence Day, which happened to coincide with my visit.

If you visit Surabaya, I would for sure highly recommend to stay in the fabulous Majapahit hotel, which has so much history and is located on such beautiful and quiet grounds right in the heart of the city.

I hope that one day I can visit Indonesia and Surabaya again to finally see more of the city, make that Mount Bromo day trip, and enjoy some great Indonesian food in some of the city’s restaurants.

When I used to regularly commute LHR-SIN-SYD twenty plus years ago Surabaya was always one of the places that came up on the map! I’ve never been but thank you Koen for letting me see a bit of it after all this time, as ever, a great report.

Avatar photo

You keep surprising me with your own stories, Pete! That’s quite of a commute to make, LHR to SYD! Although admittedly, if it’s on SQ in a premium class it’s certainly bearable 😉

I always have a similar fascination with random places you often see on the flight map on a plane but never set foot in, like Grand Rapids, MI, or Novosibirsk in Russia.

In those days SQ called business class Raffles Class and it certainly was something very special particularly on the top deck of the 747. I gained LPPS status over time with them, a tier that is now closed but it keeps me as a *G for the rest of my days. As a PPS member you were treated even more exceptionally back in the day though upgrades were still few and far between. The only other airline that came close back then was Cathay.

What SQ offer now as business class is poor in comparison but like a few more they trade on past glory and reputation.

I can imagine it was more special. I think it actually counts for many more airlines, I’m sure you have also read for example the stories of OA in the Onassis era on the A3 board at FlyerTalk and seen such pictures..

And yes, what I’ve gathered SQ has always been stingy with upgrades, never really overbooks flights, and being super protective about their premium classes in general when it comes to miles redemptions.

Perhaps what SQ offers now is poor in comparison, I can’t compare as I only did 2 flights ever in SQ business class. I can only say I tremendously enjoyed those 2 flights, especially SIN-MNL on the B787. Great seat, and book the cook option! Had a delicious lobster thermidor which is still is the best meal I’ve eaten in the skies.. besides, service was impeccable on both my flights.

Road Trip Jakarta-Surabaya, Ini Rute & Kuliner lewati Cirebon-Pacitan

jakarta surabaya road trip

2. Berhenti sejenak di Cirebon tuk olah rasa bersama Nasi Jamblang Bu Nur yang termasyhur

jakarta surabaya road trip

3. solo - pacitan via wonogiri 4 jam perjalanan semi off road dan jalur gelap kurang pencahayaan.

jakarta surabaya road trip

jakarta surabaya road trip

4. Pacitan - Madiun, mampir di rumah Embah Wiji

jakarta surabaya road trip

5. Madiun-Surabaya via tol 3 jam, mode sport tanpa ampun

jakarta surabaya road trip

Diatas itu barulah terlihat aerodinamika mulai menghambat, memang suspensi mobil tetap stiff, namun buritan mobil terasa seperti sedang berdansa bak balerina.

Tentunya semua berkat The Wanderlust Hyundai Stargazer X!

Demikian beberapa rekomendasi rute Jakarta-Surabaya bedasarkan pengalaman penulis. Lewat Pacitan melihat indahnya Pantai Watu Karung  bisa menjadi pertimbangan ketika melakukan  road trip  untuk perjalanan liburan kamu nanti. Semoga bisa menjadi inspirasi!

2 Weeks in Indonesia: The Perfect Itinerary (Beaches, Temples & Adventure!)

Indonesia itinerary.

Indonesia is one far flung country.

We just returned from two incredible weeks traveling around Indonesia and loved every minute of it!

From a mud-slinging off-roading adventure in Bandung to exploring the cultural heart of Yogyakarta , then scuba diving in Raja Ampat and learning to surf in Lombok … visiting Indonesia was non stop adventure!

If you’re thinking of a trip to Southeast Asia, I included our itinerary below.

It combines Indonesia hot spots like Bali and Yogyakarta along with some islands that are a little less well known – so you can truly explore some of the best places to visit in Indonesia !

Incredible Cities in Indonesia

2-week-indonesia-itinerary-1

Best Places to Visit in Indonesia

Before you go:.

  • I read up on the main sights and regions using this  Indonesia guidebook  before heading east. If you already know you want to spend your time in the sun and sand on Lombok / Bali , pick up this region specific book  instead.
  • Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago with 17,000+ islands spread out across more than 3,000 miles so if you want to really explore, you’ll likely be flying from place to place. Domestically, we flew with Tiger Air and and Garuda  and both far exceeded my expectations (in fact, they were better than the long-haul flights I took getting in and out of Indonesia!)
  • Borobudur , the 8th century Buddhist temple is one of the world’s greatest religious monuments and best visited at sunrise, when the mist lifts from the mountains. The monument sells a special sunrise ticket – buy in advance and show up early, as it gets quite crowded.
  • Bring sunscreen and extra strength  mosquito repellent – lots of repellent. I counted over 50 bites on myself during the trip and arrived home looking like I had chicken pox! For face sunscreen, my favorite is this Biore one  and for body I’m loving this Tropic one which smells amazing and is very moisturizing. I got eaten alive by mosquito while there so I’d also recommend cortizone if you’re as allergic to the bites as I am
  • Curious about what to pack for a trip to Indonesia? My packing guide and outfits post is here .

The Best Indonesia Itinerary

Since everyone knows about Bali by now, I wanted to combine it in an itinerary with Indonesia’s other cities. The country has over 17,000 islands with diverse cultures and ancient UNESCO heritage sites and they’re all so different!

I’ve focused this itinerary around local culture, ancient ruins, good food and fabulous beaches. Keep reading for the off the beaten path to 2 weeks in Indonesia!

Day 1: Arrive Jakarta

Java island.

Jakarta is the international hub and main landing point into the country (the other international airport is in Denpasar, near Lombok and Bali).

jakarta-itinerary

Indonesia’s capital city is filled with glittering skyscrapers and heavy traffic.

There’s not necessarily many tourist sights in Jakarta, but it’s still nice to spend a day or two in the capital to rest and explore after a long flight.

If you like shopping, Jakarta is paradise.

I spent an afternoon wandering the fancy malls of Grand Indonesia and Pacific Place where for enough dough, you can zoom away in a McLaren or glitter in diamonds.

For my indulgence, I chose an iced coffee drink made with espresso and condensed milk (smaller in price tag but no less luxurious ha).

Best Things to Do in Jakarta

  • See the city’s highlights like Merdeka Square, the Presidential Palace and Istiqulal Mosque. This private full day tour is a convenient option as it includes transportation
  • Learn about Jakarta’s colonial past and explore the Dutch style quarter of Old Batavia

Getting Around Jakarta

Jakarta traffic is legendary.

Unfortunately there’s no public subway system so grab a scooter, uber or taxi to get around and… budget double the time you think you need. That traffic is bumper to bumper!

On the plus side, taxis are very affordable!

I took a 40 minute ride into the city and paid 125,000 rupiah (just under $10 USD). My Indonesian friends recommended that tourists stick to reputable taxi companies like Blue Bird.

Or, if you’ve been to Asia before and are comfortable with motorbikes, try GoJek. GoJek is the local taxi/uber version for scooters.

Where to Stay in Jakarta

Swiss Belhotel Airport Jakarta is where we've stayed on every visit to Indonesia.

Since we typically only spend ~1-2 days in Jakarta and heard about the horror stories with the city's traffic, this airport hotel on the outskirts of the city was a great option.

The hotel is clean, affordable and spacious with free WiFi and a modern atmosphere. Coming from NYC, the flights to Jakarta are brutally long (and always involve layovers) so the comfortable beds here are a lifesaver.

There's not much to do or see in the capital as it's mainly a working city so I don't think you can go wrong in finding a clean, affordable hotel to rest up after your long flight and then heading onwards!

Days 2-3: Bandung

2-week-indonesia-itinerary-1

Bandung is the capital of West Java Province.

Because it’s relatively close to the city but feels completely different, the city is a very popular getaway for Jakarta locals. Whereas the capital is congested and modern, Bandung is green, airy and historic.

It’s location high in the mountains provides a beautiful open-air feel with lots of great cafes, outdoor activities and an insight into Javanese culture.

Bandung is widely considered Indonesia’s center for learning and creativity and I believe part of this is due to the prestigious local university.

After a couple days in Bandung, I could see why it was so popular with Jakartans!

2-week-indonesia-itinerary-1

Getting Around Bandung

Bandung is a spread out city and again, there really isn’t widely available public transportation.

I believe most local Indonesians drive, so it is very helpful to have a car to get around. If you’re traveling with a group, the most economical thing to do is to hire a driver for the day. That’s what we did!

Best Things to Do in Bandung

  • Tour a beautiful tea plantation
  • Visit Hong Community to learn traditional games and explore Bandung’s cultural side
  • Spend an afternoon off-roading in Lembang forest
  • Explore Jayagiri forest in north Bandung
  • Visit the colorful Lembang floating market
  • Listen to beautiful bamboo instrument concert at Saung Mang Udjo (Udjo’s House)
  • Take a day trip to see the beautiful volcanic crater lake of Kawah Putih
  • Dip into the hot springs by volcanic crater, Tangkuban Perahu
  • Go on a challenging jungle trek inside a volcano !

2-week-indonesia-itinerary-1

Where to Eat in Bandung

Two restaurants we tried were amazing:

  • Dusun Bambu : This is a huge park with different greenery, sculptures and lakes. There’s lots of restaurants on site and it’s a great spot for traditional Indonesian food and fantastic views.
  • Kampung Daun : Another beautiful, airy and huge restaurant. Walking through here was like exploring a rainforest with lots of greenery and bamboo hut style eating areas. Loved the food here as well!

Where to Stay in Bandung

Sheraton Hotel Bandung is a gorgeous luxury hotel in the city.

From the gorgeous lobby, to the multiple outdoor swimming pools, we loved every minute of our stay here. If you're a Starwood member and have SPG points, definitely stay here!

There's free WiFi and a huge breakfast buffet which makes the stay very relaxing. Our rooms had modern, bright decor, extra comfy beds and fantastic views of the pool.

Days 4-6: Yogyakarta

2-week-indonesia-itinerary-1

Yogyakarta is one of my favorite regions in Indonesia.

If you like natural wonders, local art and ancient culture, you can’t skip a visit!

The region is often abbreviated as “Jokja” or “Jokjakarta” (as in Indonesian, y’s are spoken like j’s) and has enough sights and attractions to keep you riveted for several days.

Jogja is home to many of Indonesia’s most famous temples. It’s also the spot to pick up local Indonesian fabric, called batik, or to try making it yourself!

2-week-indonesia-itinerary-1

Best Things to Do in Yogyakarta

There’s  a lot  to do in Yogyakarta and its surrounding area. No matter what you like to do – cultural travel, adventure and hiking, try local cuisine – you can do it in Jogja.

  • Get up at sunrise to climb Candi Borobudur , a 9th century Buddhist temple
  • Explore the 3 expressions of God at Candi Prambanan , a Hindu temple and UNESCO World Heritage Site at sunset
  • Visit more ancient UNESCO world heritage sites like the Sultan’s Palace and Taman Sari water castle
  • Make your own batik fabric – it’s harder than it looks!
  • Try crafting traditional Javanese wood puppets (if you want a harder challenge)
  • Learn to cook authentic Javanese cuisine in a hands on Indonesian cooking class
  • See the Ramayana Ballet performance of the classic Hindu story
  • Explore Yogyakarta at night with a fun street food tour , by rickshaw!

Getting Around Yogyakarta

We also hired a driver to take us around Yogyakarta.

It’s the most convenient way to get around the city and take nearby day trips, since the sights are pretty spread out. The famous temples of Borobudur and Prambanan are outside the city in nearby Magelang, while some of the really adventure heavy sights are even farther out.

Day Trips form Yogyakarta

There’s so much to do in the city of Yogyakarta but if you have  even more time , there’s a lot of natural beauty just a short car ride away. The region is home to several towering volcanoes (that are still active!), extensive cave systems and serene blue lakes.

If you love the outdoors, you have to at least take one of these day trips!

  • Day Trip to Mount Merapi in a 4×4, Indonesia’s most active volcano. This tour takes you at sunset for the most scenic visit!
  • Day trip to Jomblang Cave , where you can descend 60 meters down into a tiny hole
  • Day Trip to Kalibiru National Park , famous on Instagram for its scenery and views
  • If you really like a challenge, trekking the summit of Mount Bromo and Ijen is a popular multi day hike

Where to Stay in Jogjakarta

We stayed at The Phoenix and this stunning hotel was my favorite of the trip.

It has grand, old colonial architecture that feels quite similar to Raffles in Singapore. But while the rooms are decorated with antique, traditional Indonesian furniture, the hotel is still modern and luxurious!

There's a gorgeous outdoor swimming pool that we took full advantage of and the gigantic breakfast spread was not to be missed – they offer both Western and Indonesia food. My favorite part was the coffee option each morning, with six different types of sugar .

While the rooms themselves are fairly small, they're very comfortable. The hotel offers free WiFi and local fruits on arrival (give the rat tail fruit a try). Stay here for the atmosphere!

Days 7-10: Raja Ampat

Papua island.

2-week-indonesia-itinerary-1

Raja Ampat is one of the most beautiful, untouched ocean paradises on earth.

It’s composed of four large main islands, called the Four Kings. Together the region of Raja Ampat covers 9.8 million acres of land and sea all the way in East Indonesia.

For years Raja Ampat was a bit of a “secret” paradise, known mostly to Indonesians and the scuba diving community.

While the islands here might seem “ordinary”, it’s the sights under the sea that are extraordinary.

2-week-indonesia-itinerary-1

Visiting Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat is one of the most bio diverse marine sights in the world, with over 540 types of corals, over 1,000 types of reef fish and over 700 types of mollusks.

While I’ve never been to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, all the divers on our trip who had scuba dived in both places said it was no contest – Raja Ampat blew it out of the water.

Chances are if you’re visiting here, you’ve come to scuba dive. All of our days on the islands were spent in the water, swimming, snorkeling, meeting the locals and relaxing in paradise.

2-week-indonesia-itinerary-1

Scuba Diving in Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat is on the cusp of two oceans, the Indian and Pacific and the current is pretty strong. The journey is SO worth it, but if you’re explicitly looking to visit for the diving, it helps to be extra comfortable.

I would recommend having an Advanced certification or being very comfortable with scuba diving. The waves can be a bit rough for beginners (at least they were for me).

We tried both snorkeling and scuba diving and saw incredible fish and reef life even on the snorkeling so that’s always a fantastic option either way!

Getting to Raja Ampat

So why isn’t Raja Ampat more well known?  Probably many reasons but the main one is location.

Raja Ampat is located on the western side of the island of Papua – it’s  incredibly  far even if it might not look it on the map. It’s also very undeveloped, and it took us a combination of planes, buses and ferries to get there on a  very  long and tiring journey.

At one point I fell asleep in a hotel lobby couch because I was so exhausted! Oops.

But once we made it, we were surrounded by sand and sunshine. Time there felt unreal, like being in one of the last untouched places on earth.

Things to Do in Raja Ampat

  • Scuba dive with giant manta rays, turtles and the most amazing coral reefs in the world
  • Feed the fish at Sawinggrai
  • Visit the community of Arborek Village for snorkeling and local food (tree sap anyone?)
  • Hike Piaynemo for unbelievable views of the islands

Where to stay in Raja Ampat

We stayed at Raja Ampat Dive Lodge it was incredible. From the first steps onto the long wooden jetty, you know you're stepping into another world.

We spent 3 days in paradise, snorkeling under the dock, watching each sunrise and sunset and having fresh grilled shrimp and fish on the open pit.

Just be sure to pack sunscreen and mosquito repellent! Each night in early October, tropical rainstorms hit and I would wake up with 10 new mosquito bites.

Book rooms: Booking.com , Agoda

Days 11-12 Lombok

Lombok island.

2-week-indonesia-itinerary

Lombok is one of the more popular areas in Indonesia.

It’s known for its beaches and great surfing. We had the best time learning how to surf here and highly recommend it!

If you’re deciding between the beach regions:

  • Lombok is more touristy and commercial
  • Raja Ampat is untouched and more ‘Castaway’ esque
  • Bali is more hippie and trendy

Best Things to Do in Lombok

  • Brave the waves for a surfing lesson at Selong Blanak Beach
  • Shop for local sarongs in the nearby marketplace
  • Take a 3 hour cooking class to learn how to make spicy local Lombok cuisine
  • Visit the famous Pink Beach of Lombok , where coral fragments turn traditionally white sand into a pastel pink
  • Discover north Lombok, famous for its waterfalls , tribal villages and the Bayan old mosque
  • Take a day trip to the southern part of Lombok where you can visit the Sasak tribe and relax at Kuta beach
  • For a challenge, take a multi day and night trek to reach the crater rim of Mount Rinjani

Where to Stay in Lombok

We stayed at Novotel Lombok Resort and Villas .

It's a beautiful, sprawling indoor-outdoor hotel on the beach with tons of daily activities, like taking Indonesia cooking classes, feed the monkeys or trying yoga on the beach.

The rooms felt more like suites – they were airy, open and had modern jungle-y decor. The hotel also had a fantastic breakfast (can you tell I love a great hotel breakfast?!)

The Novotel Lombok is very well known – we saw the most Europeans and Australians on this property than anywhere else on the trip (but that's probably also because Lombok and the nearby Gili islands are a very popular destination in Indonesia.)

If you want more 5 star luxurious accommodation in Lombok, this hotel is it!

Book rooms:   Booking.com ,   Hotels.com , Agoda

Days 13-14: Gili Trangwan

2-week-indonesia-itinerary

Gili is the collective name for three small islands off the coast of Lombok .

We stayed on the largest of the 3, Gili Trawangan, which has the most infrastructure. Gili T is known for its vibrant nightlife and felt very similar to Cancun, with street after street of bars and restaurants.

If you’re looking for a girls getaway or party spot – this is it!

The island itself is pretty small and doesn’t allow any kind of motorized transport. So instead, you can hop on a horse drawn cart, rent a bike or just walk.

We had a lot of fun riding bikes around the island perimeter and trying out all the beach swings.

2-week-indonesia-itinerary

Getting to the Gili Islands

From Lombok, you’ll have to take a speed boat to reach any of the three Gili islands.

In high season, there’s often a long wait for the ferries so you can save time by booking a trip in advance. You can reserve either a trip on the fast or slow boats.

Best Things to Do in Gili Trangwan

  • Bike around the island, stopping for a pina colada or two
  • Swing on the ocean hammocks and swings (although be aware these can get crowded)
  • Relax by the pool and have a gelato or two (there are tons of stands on the island, all are delicious)
  • Once the sun goes down… bar hop all night long!
  • Learn how to scuba dive with a beginner PADI open water course
  • Take a beginner dive trip to see underwater sea turtles
  • Island hop between Gili Trangwan, Gili Air and Gili Meno
  • Go on a snorkeling trip to the undisturbed, uninhabited islands of Gili Kondo, Gili Kapal and Gili Lampu
  • Don’t know how to swim? Walk underwater with a Seawalker tour so you can see the fish

Where to Stay in Gili Trangwan

We stayed at Villa Ombak , a large gorgeous property right across the dock when you get off on the island.

The Villa has a number of different room types – I had one with an absolutely huge outdoor bathroom / shower that was so fun. There's a great pool with tons of hammocks, bikes to rent and giant chess boards.

You could comfortably stay here all morning, head to the beach and then party at night.

The best tours in Indonesia:

  • Mount Batur Sunrise Trek :  a once in a lifetime experience to enjoy sunrise at the summit of Mount Batur. Balinese guides will show you the way under dark and take you to the edge of the active volcano. Check availability here .
  • Beach and Bar Hop:   I wish I had known about this tour when I was traveling in Indonesia! Beach and bar hop across bali in these adorable 1980 VW buses (yes, they’re wifi and minibar equipped). Watch the sunset at Jimbaran bay, sip cocktails at Bali’s best seaside resorts and do Bali in style. Check availability here .
  • Bali Reef Cruise and Lembongan Island Day Trip :  Nusa Lembongan is an idyllic protected island and one of the best places to go snorkeling, diving, etc from Bali. This tour takes care of all transportation and meals! Check availability here .

Visiting Indonesia – Travel Planning Checklist

Go |  From New York City, there are no direct flights to Indonesia but you can grab reasonably priced flights if you book early. Check often for routes and fares here . I've transferred in Doha and China and prefer Doha's modern airport via Qatar Airways.

If flying to Jakarta, fares will be slightly cheaper and from Indonesia's capital you can explore Bandung , Yogyakarta and Sumatra on short domestic flights. If your focus is Bali , note that flights from the the East Coast of the USA will be slightly more expensive and typically will involve a 2nd stopover in Jakarta anyway.

Getting Around | You can rent a motorized scooter to get around or book a tour to handle transportation if you're not comfortable. Taxis and Ubers will work in some areas, but not all. Gojek is a popular app for moped taxis. Jakarta and Bali have especially terrible traffic.

Stay | I highly recommend ‘hotel hopping' Bali – the island is quite large and different neighborhoods   have their own characteristics. Bali is also a fantastic place to splurge on a luxury resort – the options are endless, the views are unbeatable and the food is divine. We loved both Alila Villas Uluwatu and the Sofitel Nusa Dua .

Airbnb is a great way to stay in luxurious Balinese resorts for discounted rates – especially if you're traveling with a group. Many have spacious villas and beautiful pools .

Pack |  Bring light fabrics and traditional summer wear for Bali along with mosquito spray. If you intend to visit Indonesia's other cities and famous temples , bring modest clothing. Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim country and can view short shorts and mini skirts as impolite. You can read my complete Bali packing list here .

Protect | Lastly, be sure to visit Indonesia with  travel insurance . Whether you get injured and need to be hospitalized, or your phone gets stolen, travel insurance will help when you need it most.

I ended up getting seriously ill and visiting the hospital while in Solo, Indonesia and being taken care of was a lifesaver. Get a quote for your trip here .

I really like the 2nd itinerary you listed. I am arriving to denpasar, bali, and will like to follow this one. I have two questions and I was wondering if perhaps you could assist. One for the second itinerary, do you think it would be possible to substitute something (like staying a few days extra in kanawa island ) and going to the Gili islands instead? Also, is it better and less expensive to rent hotels once there or to do it online? (i.e the rates for the places you stayed, did you pre-book?)

Hi Brenda – I don’t quite understand your question as I only posted one itinerary, do you mean the second week? I did include the Gili islands on the trip and if you want a more fun / party atmosphere it’s worth exploring. For hotels yes, it’s definitely better to pre-book, you’ll get a cheaper rate.

Lately I’ve been getting comments from users who leave “check my gift card balance” and other strange websites as their URL. I’m not really sure why. I’m tempted to think your comment is spam! If i’m mistaken, please let me know.

It looks absolutely stunning there. I really like how you captured the natural beauty of it. I definitely want to visit some day. Great post! :]

Thanks Carmen! Indonesia is SO stunning – hope you make it out there soon :)

It looks like a dream!! I can’t wait to go back to SE Asia!

This summer I went to Bali and the Gilis for two/three weeks. But i wish I had had time to see more of Indonesia! Hopefully i can go back soon! Thanks for sharing, ive written these things down. x

Ooh wish I had spent 3 weeks in Bali, sounds amazing!

Hi Sher. Thank you for sharing your experiences in this beautiful countrie. I´m very interested in going to Indonesia, specially Bali for honeymoon. Your itinenary is interesting. I´m flying from either LAX or San Diego. I see that you flew to Jakarta… from where did you flew back to your home? Same? Jakarta?

Please let me know or make suggestions. Many thanks in advance.

I wondered if you received my previous e-mail? I´m going to Indonesia going from either LAX or San Diego. You flew Jakarta way. What airport/city do you suggest coming back to LAX or SD?

Thank you very much!!!!

Hi Maria, I’m happy you’re planning to visit Indonesia. The best place to check flights is either google.com/flights or skyscanner – both will give you great options and allow you to set price alerts for the best deals. Happy to help!

Hi really great blog, itinerary, photos- what a fab trip. Definately want to do. Just a question you spent 3 days on Raja Ampat- as it takes 2 days to get there? Do you give yourself 6/7 days to get there, 3 days there and get back? just thinking how many days we need to get there and back. I read you said it’s better to pre book rooms/ places to stay- as it’s cheaper. Would we be ok just turning up and asking? Done so in other countries but better to book ahead on Raja ampat. Thanks for all your photos and itinerary and travel ideas- brilliant! Suze

Hi Suzanne – so glad you enjoy the content! To answer your question, I spent 3 full days on the islands of Raja Ampat and the travel time to and from was additional time. If you’re coming from Jakarta or Denpasar, it’s a hair more straight forward as it cuts out one flight, but you should budget at least a full day, possibly a day and a half, for travel time each way.

I covered the full logistical details of getting to Raja Ampat in this post: https://shershegoes.com/how-to-get-to-raja-ampat/

I do recommend booking ahead for a couple reasons. First, it’s quite expensive. Raja Ampat is remote so everything about the trip is pricey – the flights, the ferries/speedboats and the hotels themselves, not to mention diving. If you book ahead you’ll avoid the sticker shock. Secondly, Raja Ampat is a series of islands and the main island where you ferry into, Wasei, is just a industrial port/hub without any tourist infrastructure. Most people choose one of the smaller, more private islands to stay at and to get to the smaller island you need a speedboat which the hotel will arrange for you in advance (at extra cost). If you just show up, you’ll be a bit stranded. You can’t relaly walk around ha. Finally, there aren’t many lodging options. There’s a dive eco center closest to Wasei, the Raja Ampat Dive Lodge I stayed at which is probably the most “luxury”, local home stays on some islands (but these aren’t well advertised unless you are already on the smaller islands) and perhaps 5-8 other hotels so supply is limiting.

Do you speak Indonesian? If so, I think showing up and asking around could be potentially ok. I have to admit I never show up without a hotel booked, even if just as a backup. It sounds like you are comfortable doing it so maybe you may feel differently. I do like booking with booking.com bc you can then cancel without charge if you change your mind.

a final note – Raja Ampat sees very few tourists out in West Papua except “luxury” tourists and die hard scuba divers so there isn’t much infrastructure to cater to Westerners.

Hope that helps and please check the Raja Ampat post for all the logistical details. I put it in there for anyone looking for dedicated info on Raja Ampat! Let me know if you have any other questions, happy to help.

Can I just tell how amazing your pictures are. I am sold on Indonesia just by the pictures!

I see that you have been to both Thailand and Indonesia. I would like to get your advise on honeymoon location. Which would you prefer for honeymoon? Both of us aren’t so much into beaches but would like some beach time after the wedding and also do some exploring. We are getting married in August and plan to go on the honeymoon in Sept/Oct. I read weather isn’t too good around that time in Thailand but I was kind of leaning towards Thailand. I would really appreciate any advise or input to make my decision on the location. Thank You!

Hi Sumaiya, hmm personally I would pick Koh Samui thailand for your honeymoon! That was my favorite place, and I loved where stayed (conrad koh samui). Its not super beachy bc the villas are built into the cliffs but each room has its own infinity pool that overlooks the ocean, and the hotel has a small private island if you want to snorkel and explore!

Hi! Amazing itinerary! I read your post on getting to Raja Ampat but was curious how you got from Raja Ampat to Lombok. Did you fly back through Jakarta?

Hi Teddie – thanks! If I remember correctly we connected in makassar. Doesn’t make sense to go all the way to jakarta, as its further west!

If you need help using Tor you can contact WikiLeaks for assistance in setting it up using our simple webchat available at: https://wikileaks.org/talk

If you can use Tor, but need to contact WikiLeaks for other reasons use our secured webchat available at http://wlchatc3pjwpli5r.onion

We recommend contacting us over Tor if you can.

Tor is an encrypted anonymising network that makes it harder to intercept internet communications, or see where communications are coming from or going to.

In order to use the WikiLeaks public submission system as detailed above you can download the Tor Browser Bundle, which is a Firefox-like browser available for Windows, Mac OS X and GNU/Linux and pre-configured to connect using the anonymising system Tor.

If you are at high risk and you have the capacity to do so, you can also access the submission system through a secure operating system called Tails . Tails is an operating system launched from a USB stick or a DVD that aim to leaves no traces when the computer is shut down after use and automatically routes your internet traffic through Tor. Tails will require you to have either a USB stick or a DVD at least 4GB big and a laptop or desktop computer.

Our submission system works hard to preserve your anonymity, but we recommend you also take some of your own precautions. Please review these basic guidelines.

1. Contact us if you have specific problems

If you have a very large submission, or a submission with a complex format, or are a high-risk source, please contact us . In our experience it is always possible to find a custom solution for even the most seemingly difficult situations.

2. What computer to use

If the computer you are uploading from could subsequently be audited in an investigation, consider using a computer that is not easily tied to you. Technical users can also use Tails to help ensure you do not leave any records of your submission on the computer.

3. Do not talk about your submission to others

If you have any issues talk to WikiLeaks. We are the global experts in source protection – it is a complex field. Even those who mean well often do not have the experience or expertise to advise properly. This includes other media organisations.

1. Do not talk about your submission to others

2. act normal.

If you are a high-risk source, avoid saying anything or doing anything after submitting which might promote suspicion. In particular, you should try to stick to your normal routine and behaviour.

3. Remove traces of your submission

If you are a high-risk source and the computer you prepared your submission on, or uploaded it from, could subsequently be audited in an investigation, we recommend that you format and dispose of the computer hard drive and any other storage media you used.

In particular, hard drives retain data after formatting which may be visible to a digital forensics team and flash media (USB sticks, memory cards and SSD drives) retain data even after a secure erasure. If you used flash media to store sensitive data, it is important to destroy the media.

If you do this and are a high-risk source you should make sure there are no traces of the clean-up, since such traces themselves may draw suspicion.

4. If you face legal action

If a legal action is brought against you as a result of your submission, there are organisations that may help you. The Courage Foundation is an international organisation dedicated to the protection of journalistic sources. You can find more details at https://www.couragefound.org .

Submit documents to WikiLeaks

WikiLeaks publishes documents of political or historical importance that are censored or otherwise suppressed. We specialise in strategic global publishing and large archives.

The following is the address of our secure site where you can anonymously upload your documents to WikiLeaks editors. You can only access this submissions system through Tor. (See our Tor tab for more information.) We also advise you to read our tips for sources before submitting.

If you cannot use Tor, or your submission is very large, or you have specific requirements, WikiLeaks provides several alternative methods. Contact us to discuss how to proceed.

Example excerpts (bolding by WikiLeaks , "D Def Sy" means Directorate of Defence Security, see also UK military targets domestic opinion leaders ):

"Non-traditional threats

The main threats of this type are posed by investigative journalists , pressure groups , investigation agencies, criminal elements, disaffected staff, dishonest staff and computer hackers. The types of threat from these sources can be categorized in six broad groups: a. Confidentiality. Compromise of politically sensitive information . This threat is presented by: (1) Pressure groups and investigative journalists attempting to obtain sensitive information. (2) Unauthorized disclosure of official information (leaks)..."

" Investigative journalists have exploited personal tax information; they also target commercial and financial information as do criminal elements seeking financial advantage. "

"Leaks of Official Information

Leaks usually take the form of reports in the public media which appear to involve the unauthorised disclosure of official information (whether protectively marked or not) that causes political harm or embarrassment to either the UK Government or the Department concerned . Such disclosure may have been made either orally, whether deliberately or carelessly, or following the unauthorised sight or passage of a document. Information that is formally reported as lost to a security authority, and subsequently appears in the public media, should not be treated as a leak but judged to be a compromise of lost information and treated as a loss. First news of a leak may come direct from a journalist attempting either to verify the information obtained or wishing the Department or agency to know what access to official information has been gained . In the rare cases where this occurs prior to publication, it may be possible to seek an injunction to prevent publication. Leaks of official information are to be reported to the appropriate PSyA or Command security staff in the first instance. Where the leak is judged to be serious, the PSyA or Command security staff are to bring it to the attention of D Def Sy as soon as practicable, and within 24 hours if possible. The consequences of leaks of official information are considered serious when they undermine government policy or cause embarrassment to the government . Examples are: a. The premature leaking of information on Defence Estimates or other financial details. b. The leaking of MOD correspondence on issues that are controversial at the time.

c. The leaking of details of overseas defence equipment negotiations prior to formal agreements being signed. 0258. The following factors need to be taken into account by the relevant PSyA or Command security staff in preparing to report the incident as a leak to D Def Sy: a. The medium/ media and journalists (if known) concerned.

b. The intrinsic importance of information leaked. (If there is any doubt as to whether or not the information is important, D Def Sy should be consulted for advice). c. d. e. How widely the information was circulated and in what form. Can a specific document be identified for the contents of the leak. The identity, if immediately apparent, of the source of the leak.

f. Whether or not the Official Secrets Acts are believed to have been breached, if immediately apparent. 0259. In general there is likely to be advantage in pursuing a leak investigation in those cases where..."

"The threat to operations against these targets is less likely to arise from positive acts of counter-espionage, than from leakage of information through disaffected members of staff, or as a result of the at tentions of an investigative journalist , or simply by accident or carelessness. 1706. In this wider definition of Threat, the "enemy" is unwelcome publicity of any kind, and through any medium . The most effective safeguard is to reinforce those aspects of security that minimise the risk of leakage of sensitive intelligence operations or product into the public domain - whether by accidental exposure or deliberate intent. The STRAP System aims to achieve this."

"The security measures in this chapter are aimed primarily to cover contacts made in CSSRAs and have been drawn up to protect the individual from action by FISs, extremist groups, investigative journalists and criminals."

"An Annual Threat Assessment (ATA) is issued to all Government Departments giving generic statements as to the main sources of Threat. This will include personnel who may be from or influenced by Foreign Intelligence Services (FIS), authorized users who, for whatever motive, may seek to gain access to official information they have no 'need to know', subversive or terrorist organizations, and investigative journalists ."

"The threat from subversive or terrorist organisations, investigative journalists and others must also be considered."

"Experience has shown that at least half the attempts to hack into systems arise from this group and that external hackers use "social engineering" techniques to trick authorised users into revealing information which may aid an external penetration. 7. The Media. Investigative journalists are increasingly interested in State IT systems, particularly those operated by the police and the Security and Intelligence agencies. There has been evidence of premeditated attempts to acquire protectively marked information from IT systems. 8. Members of the Public. The fact that inform ation held electronically may be open to novel forms of surreptitious attack provides a special attraction to certain individuals, commonly known as 'hackers'. Whilst the efforts of hackers are unlikely to be directed specifically against protectively marked information, there is added kudos in breaking into Defence systems, so much information might be discovered fortuitously. "

"..The threat from subversive and terrorist organizations, criminal activity, investigative journalists , and members of the public cannot be discounted..."

"..Malicious software can originate from many sources such as disaffected staff, foreign intelligence services, investigative journalists or terrorists..."

"..The main elements of the Audio security threat are: a. The threat from deliberate attempts to overhear conversations posed by FIS (especially at locations overseas), sophisticated terrorist and subversive organisations and in particular from criminals, investigative journalists , private investigators and some members of the public..."

"..Identify possible threats to your site, such as from: Foreign Intelligence Services. Terrorist groups. Disaffected staff. Criminals. Investigative journalists ."

"The protective marking of the definitions of the BIKINI Alert States is RESTRICTED but the codewords BIKINI WHITE, BIKINI BLACK, BIKINI BLACK SPECIAL, BIKINI AMBER and BIKINI RED are not protectively marked. These codewords may be passed by telephone provided that they are not qualified in any way. Notices displaying the current Alert States are to be sited so as to minimize the likelihood of the general public seeing them. These codewords and their meanings are understood by the civil police. The codewords and their definitions are not to be communicated to the media or any other unauthorized person."

"Chinese Intelligence Aims

3. Chinese intelligence activity is widespread and has a voracious appetite for all kinds of information; political, military, commercial, scientific and technical. It is on this area that the Chinese place their highest priority and where we assess that the greatest risk lies. 4. The Chinese have realised that it is not productive to simply steal technology and then try to `reverse engineer it'. Through intelligence activity they now attempt to acquire an in-depth understanding of production te chniques and methodologies. There is an obvious economic risk to the UK. Our hard earned processes at very little cost and then reproduce them with cheap labour. 5. It is also, potentially, more serious than the above. In certain key military areas China is at least a generation behind the West. The Chinese may be able to acquire illegally the technology that will enable them to catch up. The real danger is that they will then produce advanced weapons systems which they will sell to unstable regimes. They have a track record of doing so. The consequences for the world's trouble spots and any UK involvement there could be disastrous.

Characteristics of Chinese Intelligence Activity

6. Chinese intelligence activity is very different to the portrayal of `Moscow Rules' in the novels of John Le Carre. The Chinese make no distinction between `information' and `intelligence'. Their appetite for information, particularly in the scientific and technical field, is vast and indiscriminate. They do not `run agents' <AD> they `make friends'. Although there are Chinese `intelligence officers', both civilian and military, these fade into insignificance behind the mass of ordinary students, businessmen and locally employed staff who are working (at least part-time) on the orders of various parts of the S tate intelligence gathering apparatus.

Cultivation

7. The process of being cultivated as a `friend of China' (ie. an `agent') is subtle and long-term. The Chinese are adept at exploiting a visitor's interest in, and appreciation of, Chinese history and culture. They are expert flatterers and are well aware of the `softening' effect of food and alcohol. Under cover of consultation or lecturing, a visitor may be given favours, advantageous economic conditions or commercial opportunities. In return they will be expected to give information or access to material. Or, at the very least, to speak out on China's behalf (becoming an `agent of influence').

Locally Engaged Staff

8. Most companies operating in China are obliged to employ a number of locally engaged staff supplied by organisations such as the `Provincial Friendship Labour Services Corporation'. It is probable that the Chinese civilian intelligence service will have briefed such staff to copy all papers to which they are able to gain access. Many Chinese students and some businessmen also work to a brief from the Chinese intelligence services.

Technical Attacks

9. The Chinese intelligence services are known to employ telephone and electronic `bugs' in hotels and restaurants. They have also been known to search hotel rooms and to use surveillance techniques against visitors of particular interest.

10. The Chinese intelligence services have been known to use blackmail to persuade visitors to work for them. Sexual involvement should be avoided, as should any activity which can possible be construed as illegal. This would include dealing in black market currency or Chinese antiques and artefacts, straying into `forbidden' areas or injudicious use of a camera or video recorder."

"TRAVEL BRIEF FOR VISITS TO RUSSIA AND THE FORMER SOVIET REPUBLICS

About this brief

1. The purpose of this brief is to provide security advice for travellers to Russia and the rest of the former Soviet Union (FSU). It describes both the risks involved in travelling to Russia and the other former Soviet Republics, and the action to be taken should trouble arise. The information in the brief is based on the actual experiences of recent travellers to the FSU.

Why should I read this brief?

2. As a visitor to Russia and the FSU you may attract the attention of the local security and intelligence services. Although most travellers experience little or no trouble, it would be unwise for you to assume you are immune to this attention. As you will see from the examples given in this brief, all visitors to Russia and the FSU are potentially of interest to foreign intelligence services, irrespective of the purpose of the visit.

What are the RFIS after?

3. In view of the poor state of the Russian economy, the Russian Federation Intelligence Services (RFIS) place a high priority on information to bolster their economy, scientific and technical information, and on information to help advance their pol itical influence. This extends to the theft of patents and to seeking detailed information on Western scientific developments. They also have an interest in political reporting, alongside their more traditional targets such as Western Defence and Security, eg NATO. The SVR (foreign intelligence service) and the GRU (military intelligence) try to recruit British subjects to work for them in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, often initially in minor support roles. They are always on the watch for any British subject who may be induced, either wittingly or unwittingly, to cooperate. They do not necessarily concentrate on those who already have access to information of value to them.

The approach to Overseas Visitors

4. From the moment a visitor enters the country, he or she may be reported on by a wide variety of people, including officials, business contacts, tourist guides, hotel employees and apparent casual contacts. People who speak the visitor's own language may be introduced in such a way as to make him think that it was the visitor who took the initiative, or that their meeting was entirely fortuitous. We know it sounds like a spy movie, but as well as having wide networks of agents and informers, the FSB (Russian security service) makes extensive use of sophisticated technical devices. In the main hotels all telephones c an be tapped and in some rooms visual or photographic surveillance can be carried out, if necessary using infrared cameras to take photographs in the dark. If is perfectly possible for the FSB to ensure that the visitor is placed in such a room. There is also a wide range of technical devices, which can be used outside and even in places such as restaurants and cars. These technical devices pick up indiscreet talk which could be of use to the FSB.

Methods of Compromise

5. Careful behaviour should be sufficient to avoid difficulties with the FSB, but visitors should bear in mind that they can get into trouble in many ways. Unofficial financial transactions, such as obtaining local currency at favourable rates or sel ling personal possessions to acquaintances, are all in contravention of local laws. A Russian friend or acquaintance may ask a visitor to deliver a letter or a present to some relative living in the West, but this is again in breach of local regulations. Taking works of art out of Russia is a serious offence, while drink-driving regulations are rigorous. There are strict r ules about taking photographs in Russia and it is advisable to find out in advance where cameras may be used. 6. Irregularity in personal behaviour may also lead to trouble. The FSB may attempt to capitalise on sexual liaisons between visitors and lo cal nationals. In addition, the FSB may attempt to compromise and subsequently blackmail through knowledge of marital infidelity or sexual activity the target may wish to hide.

Risk of Arrest

7. A visitor who commits any offence against local laws runs the risk of being arrested and threatened with the withdrawal of business facilities, imprisonment or exposure unless he or she agrees to work for the FSB. Attempts may be made to induce the victim to sign a confession or to agree to cooperate. Alternatively, the evidence may be stored away for use at a later date, perhaps when their circumstances have changed (for example, after the visitor has married, or entered a different field of employment).

8. Visitors may face any of these hazards whenever they visit Russia but the FSB is especially active during Trade Fairs. At these times particular care should be taken.

SVR and GRU Approaches Worldwide

9. As a general point, it should be borne in mind that both the SVR and GRU are known to have approached British nationals, in particular businessmen, in many parts of the world. The threat is especially high in some Third World countries where the R FIS believe they have little to fear from the local security services. People who have been regular visitors to Russia are more likely to come to notice since the FSB will hold some record of their personal details, which can be passed onto the SVR a nd the GRU. An indiscretion or irregularity committed in Russia, even if apparently unnoticed at the time, may be exploited by RFIS officers elsewhere. In addition, RFIS officers may make approaches using the cover of another nationality, for example Eastern European or Scandinavian, to disguise their true allegiance.

Advice about visits to Other Former Soviet Republics

10. Visitors to the other former Soviet Republics should heed the advice given to visitors to Russia. Although these republics now have their own independent security services, many of them continue to cooperate closely with the RFIS. The RFIS are so comfortable operating in some former Soviet Republics that they regard them as virtually home territory. The advice about co mpromising offences and risk of arrest also applies. It should be noted that many of these republics are not used to Western visitors and may pay particular attention to them."

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Author : Director of Security and Resilience Date: 13 May 2019

Introduction

This document establishes the strategic requirement for the MOD Police ( MDP ). It defines the specialist policing capabilities that are required to counter the main crime and security risks faced by the MOD . It provides context for the tasking and resourcing of MDP services and describes the governance framework that directs and assures the force.

The legal case for the MDP

The legal basis and jurisdiction for the MDP is defined in the MOD Police Act 1987. It is a national and wholly civilian police force. MDP officers are warranted constables provided with constabulary police training. The MDP ’s constabulary powers are derived from common and statute law. These powers are only lawful if they are exercised impartially, reasonably and proportionately, without undue influence, prejudice or constraint. All members of the MDP , from a constable to the Chief Constable should have regard for the interests of the MOD , but in the actual exercise of constabulary powers and authority, they are answerable to the law alone.

The Chief Constable must exercise impartial discretion in deciding to investigate offences and propose prosecution, free of any departmental or ministerial interference. Its officers have full constabulary powers when operating within their permitted jurisdiction (and in certain specified situations). MDP officers can therefore operate, armed, inside and outside MOD establishments. These powers mean that the MDP can provide armed protective security in its widest sense. Over 90% of its officers are Authorised Firearms Officers who are required to comply with the highest professional standards.

The MOD requirement for the MDP

The MDP enables the delivery of the following defence tasks through the provision of policing and security services:

  • DT1: Defence, Security and Resilience of the Homeland and Overseas Territories
  • DT2: Nuclear Deterrence and the Defence Nuclear Enterprise
  • DT3: Understanding (intelligence)
  • DT5: Overseas Defence Activity
  • DT6: UK Prosperity and Civil Society.

The main crime and security risks faced by the MOD

The MOD faces a range of crime and security related threats and risks that require specialist and dedicated civil policing capabilities. These threats include:

  • terrorist attack and the expoitation of defence assets or personnel for terrorist purposes
  • disruption and disorder caused by protestors
  • theft or compromise of, and damage to, assets and material that would have a significant impact upon defence capability
  • major financial fraud and corruption that would have a significant impact upon defence capability
  • unauthorised intrusion onto the defence estate.

Capabilities

The MOD requires the MDP to maintain the ability to deploy appropriately trained and equipped officers. The department does not seek to maintain a civil policing capability and capacity to meet every eventuality. If the MDP is unable to meet a specific policing requirement the department will look to the Chief Constable to resource this through a request for assistance from local police forces or national police agencies, accepting that this will be subject to respective policing priorities.

The MDP may also be required to support UK Defence operations overseas and should therefore maintain an overseas deployment capability. Whilst the Department does not require or fund the maintenance of a dedicated international policing resource, it requires the MDP to maintain the capability to train and deploy officers overseas at short notice.

To support the achievement of defence tasks, the MOD requires the MDP to provide the following operational outputs:

Nuclear Policing

Provision of specialist armed policing services that contribute to the protection of the UK’s Strategic Nuclear Deterrent.

The Department’s security priority is the protection of all elements of the UK’s Strategic Nuclear Deterrent. Nuclear Security Policy is articulated in JSP440, The MOD Manual of Security, Resilience and Business Continuity, Supplement 1. The Department requires the MDP to deliver a range of specialist armed policing and security capabilities to deter and prevent threats to the secure and uninterrupted operation of the UK strategic nuclear deterrent.

Territorial Policing

Provision of specialist policing services that contribute to the protection of key Defence and UK Critical National Infrastructure sites, people and assets.

The MOD ’s Guarding Policy is articulated in JSP440 Leaflet 6 Policing and Guarding. Although the MDP will be configured primarily to deliver the nuclear security task, TLB Senior Security Risk Managers may request that the MDP provides specialist protective armed policing at defence establishments where there is a clearly defined and essential requirement for constabulary powers as part of overall protective security arrangements.

The MDP will enable delivery of HMG Host Nation responsibilities under the Status of Forces Agreement 1957 through counter terrorism patrols at United States Visiting Forces ( USVF ) establishments. Further MDP services should be made available to the USVF on a repayment basis. These arrangements will be agreed through the MOD / USVF Security Committee.

The MDP may provide protective policing services to other government departments at Critical National Infrastructure sites on a repayment basis, subject to Defence ministerial approval. However, this should not be delivered in such a way that would detract from the services provided to defence.

The MOD requires the MDP to maintain a mobile armed capable response force that can temporarily be deployed to reinforce and augment the protective security arrangements at certain Defence sites and/or to provide a protective policing and security service. The location, configuration and operational role of the mobile armed capable support group capability will be agreed between the Chief Constable, Director Security and Resilience and TLB security advisors.

National Counter Terrorist Response

Contribution towards the UK’s national armed policing response to major incidents.

The Department’s requirement for the MDP is predicated on its ability to deploy inside and outside establishments in an armed role and be interoperable with local police forces [footnote 1] . . The MDP is required to maintain the commitment to deploy resources to the Strategic Armed Policing Reserve ( SAPR ) in support of the national armed policing response to a major terrorist or firearms incident. This will be provided either as Operation TEMPERER, at the level agreed with MOD Ops Directorate and the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) lead on Counter Terrorism, or on a “best effort” basis where the SAPR is deployed outwith of Operation TEMPERER.

The MDP is required to work with the NPCC lead on Counter Terrorism to develop site specific MDP (Operation PLATO) response plans as part of an overarching MDP PLATO Strategy to support local policing partners in the event of a marauding terrorist firearms attack (MTFA). These will be on the basis of ‘best effort’ balancing the immediate threat/risk to the public and the Defence sites protected by the MDP on a case by case basis using the National Decision Making model (NDM).

Crime and Intelligence

Collation and dissemination of criminal and security intelligence. Investigation and detection of fraud, corruption and the theft of, or criminal damage to, key Defence equipment and assets.

The general responsibility for the maintenance and enforcement of the criminal law in the UK rests with local police forces. However, to counter defence major crime threats and risks the MOD has a requirement for dedicated MDP resources to be focussed on the prevention and investigation of fraud, corruption and the theft of key defence equipment and assets. Loss of these would have a significant operational or reputational impact on defence, and the recovery of such equipment and assets. Director Security and Resilience, in consultation with the Head of Fraud Defence, will act as the corporate sponsor for the MDP criminal investigation capability.

Director Security and Resilience will also act as the corporate customer for the MDP Intelligence capability and will ensure that this is integrated with the MOD threat assessment process.

The Department requires MDP to act as the Defence Single Point of Contact for Counter Serious Organised Crime (C-SOC) partner agencies on investigative matters. The Department also requires the MDP , in collaboration with the Service Police, to lead and coordinate Defence C-SOC investigative, Criminal Intelligence and supporting activity, including that concerning materiel Attractive to Criminal and Terrorist Organisations (ACTO). The Chief Constable, in consultation with Director Security and Resilience, will agree the arrangements for responding to reports of crime with local police forces and the Service Police via a joint MoU with the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC).

Assistance to other UK Police Forces

The MDP is not maintained or resourced to reinforce other UK police forces, and will not generally do so other than in a major national emergency or in the course of protecting life or preventing serious crime, or where there is a clear Defence interest in doing so. Within these parameters, the provision of mutual aid by the MDP will be an operational decision by the Chief Constable with responsibility to ensure the requirements under this Statement of Requirement are not undermined or diminished.

The MDP should collaborate with other Police forces where appropriate to share best practice and improve capability.

The MDP is required to support the Home Office led Infrastructure Policing Review. The Chief Constable should take advice from Director Security and Resilience if activity or capability development by the force is likely to diverge from common policing standards and hinder further interoperability.

The MOD requires that MDP policies and processes will follow and accord with national UK policing doctrine, standards and manuals. Where national police doctrine does not cover the MDP ’s role, or it is inappropriate for MDP to follow national standards, the Chief Constable will develop appropriate policy guidance. Deviations from the standards issued by the College of Policing and NPCC are to be reviewed by the MOD Police Committee and endorsed by the MDP owner through Directorate of Security and Resilience. The Defence Police Federation will be engaged as appropriate in the development of any such policy, particularly where it has implications for terms and conditions of service for personnel.

Operational configuration, effectiveness and value for money

Requests for MDP services and capabilities will be based on direction set by the Departmental security policy detailed in JSP 440. Requests for MDP services should be limited to the specialist capabilities contained within this Statement of Requirement and within the funding made available to MDP . Customers will articulate detailed service requirements through a list of prioritised tasks, often known as the Guarding and Security Statement of Requirement (GSSOR).

The Chief Constable, in consultation with customers, will determine the operational MDP resources needed to deliver the customer requirement in the most efficient, effective and proportionate manner. Each customer is expected to fully fund their policing requirement, transferring the agreed funding through the Annual Budget Cycle. This will only vary when changes are agreed to the existing complement or service.

The allocation of budget and setting of priorities for the MDP is the overall responsibility of the MDP Owner. The Department requires the MDP , working with Director Security and Resilience and customers as appropriate, to:

  • configure its operational resources to optimise delivery of the required services and as agreed with customers in their tasking agreements with the MDP
  • configure its Headquarters structures in an efficient and effective way to optimise delivery
  • generate a police workforce that is fit for purpose
  • generate dedicated doctrine, tactics and capabilities to deliver the nuclear and non-nuclear security tasks detailed above.

Be proactive in reducing costs both internally and through collaboration and technology, offering effective services that will maximise the financial resources allocated to help mitigate the MOD ’s main crime and security threats and risks.

Accountability and Governance

Chief constable mdp.

The Chief Constable will remain operationally independent and will be directly accountable to Secretary of State for decisions made on operational policing matters. The Department requires the Chief Constable to:

  • produce an annual Policing Plan
  • operate within delegated authorities and in accordance with MOD ’s policies, rules and guidance
  • provide Defence Board plan updates as required
  • maintain an effective ‘corporate health’ programme for SHEF, absence management, business continuity, equality and diversity and operational assurance.

As part of the MOD , the MDP will operate in accordance with the Department’s wider governance and accountability arrangements which draw on best practice across government and specifically from Treasury and Cabinet Office These will include:

  • HM Treasury guidance ‘Managing Public Money’
  • MOD Joint Service Publication ( JSP ) 462 Financial Management and Charging Policy
  • JSP 440: Defence Manual of Security, Resilience, and Business Continuity
  • JSP 892: Risk Management
  • JSP 525: Corporate Governance

The MDP will also operate in accordance with instructions, guidelines and policies issued by Functional Leaders as they affect the organisation including CDP (Chief of Defence Personnel) for personnel, pay and allowance issues, DG Finance for financial management and accountability and DG Commercial for contractual management and Director Security & Resilience for security policy.

Secretary of State for Defence and Minister (Defence Personnel and Veterans) (DPV)

Secretary of State for Defence (SofS) is accountable to Parliament for all aspects of MDP ’s Performance and operational effectiveness. SofS delegates day to day accountability to Minister (DPV) who in turn will hold the Chief Operating Officer, as owner of MDP , responsible for ensuring the management within its departmental delegated authority.

A senior official in MOD Head Office acts as the Chief Constable’s first Reporting Officer and is designated as the ‘ MDP Owner’ [footnote 2] . The MDP Owner discharges the responsibilities of the Permanent Secretary of Defence for effective management and operation of the MDP as part of the MOD . The owner is responsible for ensuring that MDP complies with Defence policies and procedures and adequately meets its responsibilities to support Defence outputs. In practice this role is discharged with advice from Director Security and Resilience.

Director Security and Resilience

Director Security and Resilience is the Functional Leader for Security, the Department’s Chief Security Officer, the Defence Nuclear Security Regulator and Head of Security Profession. The Chief Security Advisor (CSyA), Head of the Directorate of Security and Resilience (DSR), is responsible for setting security policy and standards for the protection of MOD information, assets and personnel. The DSR Policing & Physical Security Team is responsible for leading on all aspects of civil policing policy and the wider governance arrangements of the MDP .

Guarding and Armed Policing PSAG Sub Committee (GAPPS)

The GAPPS provides the DSR CSyA and customers with an overall assurance of guarding and policing at Defence sites. The performance of the MDP is subject to scrutiny by DSR and its customers at the quarterly meeting. Routine MDP performance issues are resolved at the meeting or out of committee with DSR adjudicating as and when required. Any significant MDP issues are escalated to the Police Committee Sub-Committee and the DSR Group and DSR Board.

MOD Police Committee

The Secretary of State for Defence requires the MOD Police Committee to advise him by:

  • providing an independent scrutiny and assurance that the MDP is delivering policing services in accordance with the MDP Act 1987
  • giving advice to the MDP owner on the efficiency, effectiveness and performance of the Force.

The MOD Police Committee is a statutory requirement of the MOD Police Act 1987. The Committee is independently chaired and its membership is laid down in secondary legislation. The Committee’s purpose is to provide independent challenge and support to the force to ensure that the force is meeting the standards required of a UK police force and delivering efficient and effective performance against this Statement of Requirement and commitments to customers.

The Police Committee holds the Chief Constable and senior management team to account, including delivery against this Statement of Requirement. It takes a risk based analytical approach to discharge the functions listed in the Committee’s Terms of Reference.

For example, the NPCC leads for firearms and Op TEMPERER require MDP officers to comply with College of Policing national standards for authorised firearms officers.  ↩

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

Keunggulan sistem hybrid saat dipakai perjalanan jauh

Road Trip Jakarta - Surabaya Bersama All New Toyota Yaris Cross S HV

Kenapa Harus All New Toyota Yaris Cross HEV?

Kami pun memutuskan membawa All New Yaris Cross HEV dari Jakarta menuju Surabaya dalam Electria: Mudik with Hybrid.

Toyota Yaris Cross

Lalu kenapa Yaris Cross HEV?

All New Yaris Cross sendiri hadir dengan diferensiasi tawaran sistem hybrid dibanding pemain lain di segmen yang sama. Tentu saja berlaku sebagai varian atas. Terdapat juga varian non-hybrid untuk All New Yaris Cross.

Toyota Yaris Cross

Alhasil, kenyamanan terjamin selama melintas tol layang MBZ.

Menjadi medan untuk menguji performa mesin All New Yaris Cross.

All New Yaris Cross tanpa sistem hybrid.

All New Yaris Cross pun punya tawaran handling yang bikin pengemudi betah berlama-lama mengendalikannya.

Masih banyak lagi daftar fitur TSS pada All New Yaris Cross S HV. Seperti Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Pedal Misoperation Control, Front Departure Alert.

All New Yaris Cross HEV.

Bahkan kerap melakukan eksplorasi tenaga pada All New Yaris Cross HEV. Benar saja kalau All New Yaris Cross dibilang punya keunggulan dari segi performa tanpa mengorbankan soal bahan bakar. Di sini letak kehebatan mobil hybrid!

Toyota Yaris Cross

Melanjutkan perjalan dari Solo menuju Surabaya. Kembali masuk Tol Trans Jawa. Jarak pun masih cukup jauh sehingga kenyamanan sangat penting. All New Yaris Cross tawarkan kenyamanan ekstra bagi penghuni kabinnya. Baik pengemudi maupun penumpang.

Sesuai dengan jargon Toyota, yakni It's Time for Everyone! Semua orang bisa berkontribusi menuju netralitas karbon.

Toyota Yaris Cross

Menempuh jarak sekitar 800 km dari Jakarta sampai Surabaya. Terasa menyenangkan ketika ditemani All New Toyota Yaris Cross.

(ADV)
