The short answer is no, Goa is NOT expensive. Or at least relatively no. It’s more expensive compared to the rest of India but that’s hardly a fair comparison. However, prices have really being creeping up recently and Goa’s reputation as cheap destination is under-threat.

But don’t get too excited, because it’s easy to blow your money on one too many all-nighters or in the bustling bazaars.

The headline news here is that YES, Goa is rightly and correctly revered as a cheap travel and holiday destination. While inflation is serious business in India, and Goan prices have SOARED over the last decade, Goa remains amongst the cheapest winter travel destinations.

That said, prices are rising fast (though standards in some areas are actually falling) and entrance to parties now ranges from 500 – 2000 RPS and if you hire out a nice, modern “European” standard Airbnb you will pay a European price for it (and still have to deal with power cuts).

How Much Does a Trip To Goa Cost on Average?

As always, and especially in the current tourism climate, prices fluctuate. A friendly reminder that the prices we provide you in this guide are subject to change. Since this guide was initially written though, prices have increased in Goa MASSIVELY and its reputation as a cheap destination is seriously under-threat.

Throughout this guide, all costs will be given in USD. At the time of writing, the exchange rate is 1 USD = 81,25 Indian Rupees.

And remember, this is India so you will need to bring your bartering A-game. You can negotiate prices on room rates, scooter rental, souvenirs and even party entrance fees. Food and Supermarkets, are not open for bartering.

3 Days in Goa Travel Costs

ESTIMATED EXPENSE: US $600 – $1500 for a round trip ticket

This section is a little bit painful, prepare yourself. Goa is a popular destination in India but it’s not the biggest city. Or even a city. Flights flying into Goa are a bit pricey.

If you have flexibility, there are certain months which are cheaper. And you can try to plan your trip around the cheapest dates. For example, December is usually extortion as Goa becomes overcrowded with New Year ravers.

Below is a list of the average return flight cost to Goa from major global cities in the cheapest month of travel. Keep in mind that these are the average costs and subject to change.

• New York to Goa International Airport: $750 – $1460 USD
• London to Goa International Airport: £511 – £860 GDP
• Sydney to Goa International Airport: $1097 – $2020 AUD
• Vancouver – Goa International Airport: $1319 – 2080 CAD

Thankfully, this is the biggest Goa travel cost. And there are some tricks to get the cheapest flight fares possible. Keep a lookout for great deals and error fares.

Goa Airport, Dabolim Airport, is the only international airport in Goa. Making it not only the cheapest option but the only option. Once you get to Dabolim, you will then need to make your way to the coast to whichever beach you are staying it. There are busses, ($5) but it will mean changing multiple times and getting hot. The more comfortable option is to take a taxi ($25)

Other options are flying to Mumbai and taking the overnight bus down (12 hours) but honestly, the last thing you will probably want after a long flight is a long bus ride.

Note that prices vary depending in which part of Goa you are staying in . For example, Palolem in the South caters for more upmarket tastes, Baga is mainstream and overpriced whereas Arambol is the hippy mecca and budget backpacker hub.

Hostels in Goa

Let’s be honest, if you’re doing a budget backpacking trip then hostels are the way to go. Sure, you might have to deal with the stench of collective farts in a dorm room. But the new friends you’ll make and the money you’ll save will be worth it. There are some great hostels in Goa .

You can still find a dorm room for as little as $5 a night if you are prepared to haggle. And if you prefer a bit more peace and quiet, then the average $12 for a private room probably won’t break the bank. There are even specialised party hostels in Goa for those who want to go all out.

Here are three of the best hostel options in Goa. And there are many!

• Happy Panda Hostel :  Close to the beach with a warm and friendly vibe. Add a Bluetooth jukebox and a neon party room and it’s near perfection.
• Waters Edge Goa :  A home away from home on the River Sal. Boasting a swimming pool and an ancient jackfruit tree to laze under.
• The Bucket List Goa :  A creative and interesting jungle space. Full of activities from yoga to table tennis. And jeep rentals!

Airbnbs in Goa

Okay so maybe hostels used to be the cheapest option for backpackers. And then Airbnbs entered the race. And while it may not be an affordable option for solo backpackers, it can be for two or more travelers.

Of course, the price varies a lot. Are you looking for a 6 bedroom villa with disco lights and air conditioning? Or are you on the lookout for something simple and private? Airbnbs in Goa generally fall into the $26 – $80 per night range, depending on your taste.

But making frozen margaritas in your own kitchen, lazing around all day with no one to judge you? That’s priceless.

• Sea Front Beach Hut, Agonda Beach:  It’s all in the name, really. Simple huts with the beach outside your front door. A bit of Goan paradise.
• Beach Cottage, Agonda:  Goan -style wooden cottages with tropical decor. Okay, so you’ve only got a ‘partial sea view’ but the beach is just a few steps away.
• Cozy Apartment near the beach:  A ridiculously cheap apartment close to the beautiful southern Goa beaches. Simple but with everything you need. And….cheap.

Hotels in Goa

This is the part where we’d normally tell you how expensive hotels are. Especially on a backpacker’s budget. But a quick peruse of high-rating hotels in Goa would dispel that theory pretty quickly.

Yes, you can definitely find an expensive five-star resort. But overall, hotels are pretty cheap in Goa – much like everything else. You can still get a double room for between $20 – $55. Not bad, right? Or treat yourself to something higher end for up to $100 per night.

Sometimes, it’s nice to relax in a fully kitted spot, have breakfast made for you and towels cleaned for you.

Here are three top hotel options.

• Dunhill Beach Resort:  Close to Agonda beach with a host of activities such as horse riding and snorkeling. Some rooms have terraces overlooking the garden
• Treebo Trend Beach Box Hotel:  A charming hotel constructed from upcycled materials and shipping containers. Delicious food, peaceful location, and bike rental.
• Prazeres Boutique Hotel:  Four-star hotel with sun terrace and lush garden. Serving continental AND Indian breakfasts. Beautiful view over fields to spot Kingfishers.

Private Villas in Goa

The best part about a vacation in Goa is that it could be your one chance to live like a rockstar. A villa out of a rap video, all your closest friends and a rental jeep. Why not?

The price of private villas can be a bit shocking. Sitting at around $100 to $250 dollars per night. But shared between a big group of people, it turns out to be really affordable.

We’ve provided you with three options of affordable and epic villas for your group trip to Goa.

• Frangipani Villa – Anjuna:  A gorgeous three-bedroom villa with a swimming pool. There is even an on-call chef if you’re too lazy (or hungover) to make your own breakfast.
• West Valley Villa, North Goa – Saligao:  Barbeque, swimming pool and a bathroom for every bedroom – dreamy. Only 2.9km from the beach, although you might never leave.
• Ludo Villa, North Goa – Arpora:  A three-bedroom villa with a garden, terrace and swimming pool. With the added bonus of a continental breakfast available each morning. What more could you want?

Renting a House in Goa

If you are headed to Goa long term (1 month +) then we recommend trying to rent a house or room long term once you arrive. Simply ask around or go door to door to find options. It may take a few days to find something but is the best option. In 2021 I rented a 2 bedroomed house in Arambol for $200 for a month although as 2022 reaches its twilight, it seems that the going rate is now at least $300 and upwards.

ESTIMATED EXPENSE: US $1 – $60 per day

Public transport in Goa is very cheap. It’s also somewhat unreliable. Transport options which should run on a schedule, don’t. But luckily there are a ton of ways for you to get around.

Tuk-tuks and taxis are popular because of their convenience and availability. The cost of taking private public transport such as these is relatively low.

If you prefer being a master of your time, you have the option of renting your own vehicle or scooter and zooting around yourself.

Either way, you won’t be stranded because you can’t afford it. You might be stranded because the bus breaks down though.

Train Travel in Goa

Getting to and from Goa by train is one of the best options. However, getting around the state by train is not really possible. Rail links do not go to the coast which is where all the action is. Goa’s train network is only worthwhile for leaving the state if you are headed to Kerala, Mumbai or Karnataka.

There are two railways in Goa. The South Central Railway, which has its main terminal at Vasco da Gama. If you’re dead-set on some train travel, we’d recommend using this line for a day trip to Dudhsagar falls vi Colem.

The second railway is the interstate line, Konkan Railway . This travels north to south via a number of small stations.

Train travel in Goa is cheap, but not very convenient. The trains are slow and don’t stop at many of the popular traveler destinations.

Bus Travel in Goa

Yes, there are buses to ferry you around Goa. Yes, they are jaw-droppingly cheap. But they’re slightly unreliable and you’ll struggle to find any kind of schedule which you can plan around.

That being said, the Goan bus network is wide. You’ll find a bus stop in even the most remote of places. We dare you to find a destination in Goa which you can’t get to by bus.

And while you might not be able to print a schedule online. All the buses have the names of every stop printed on the front of the bus but usually only in Hindi. Just ask the driver or another passenger if the bus is going to your stop.

Buses are also very cheap. Around 10INR ($0.13) per 1 to 2 miles Bus drivers will often reject large bills so keep some change handy for bus trips.

They might break down every now and again, get painfully hot and do err on the side of cleanliness. But the buses are budget and an adventure of their own.

Getting Around Cities in Goa

Goa doesn’t have massive metropolitan cities. In fact, its largest city, Vasco de Gama, has a population of only around 100 000 people.

Most of the time, you’ll find yourself in small beach towns where your feet will do the job of getting you around. Which is great, because walking is completely free. Save a few aches and pains.

The public transport in each town and city reflects the transport system throughout the whole state.

These are the best ways to get around cities in Goa.

• Bus: The bus system we mentioned above is found in towns too. The buses are a bit rundown and almost always late. But it’s only about $0.15 for a trip. Paid in cash directly to the driver.
• Motorcycle Rickshaw: These rickety little carts on the back of a piloted motorbike are a whole lot of fun. And super cheap too. But they are limited in that there can only be one passenger at a time. Bargaining with drivers is expected so do your best to avoid getting ripped off. It’s normally about 5 – 10 INR a mile depending on the city.
• Auto Rickshaws and Cabs: These are unmetered so the risk of getting ripped off is high. If you’re in a group and have serious haggling skills then they are a good option to get around. Note that Rickhsaws are banned in some towns such as Arambol.

Renting a Car in Goa

Goa is India’s smallest state and therefore, renting a car can be a great option to explore different areas. Unlike the madness of Mumbai or New Delhi, the traffic isn’t quite as terrifying when traversing Goa.

If you’re planning on hopping around the different beaches from North to South , renting a car is an option. You won’t be at the mercy of spotty public transport, which is great. It’s more expensive than public transport though. Which is not so great, but is absolutely doable. Especially if you’re sharing the cost with friends. Your biggest challenge will be driving through the small beach towns and finding somewhere to park.

However , if you plan on sticking around North Goa then you do not need a car at all. The roads are not big enough for them and you will end up getting stuck in traffic and pissing everybody else off.

The car will cost anywhere between $13 to $55 per day depending on if you’re renting a little hatchback or a jeep. The fuel costs are ridiculously low as well.

There are a lot of deals advertised on car rental sites in Goa. And bargaining is possible, especially if you rent the car long term.

Renting a Scooter or Bicycle in Goa

Renting a bicycle is a fun way to enjoy the tropical beaches and the rickety roads of Goa. During the high season (December – March), there are tons of bicycle renting spots. Especially at the busiest beaches.

And the best bit? It’s ridiculously cheap. Sweat out the party toxins and have the freedom to go wherever, whenever, for a maximum of $3 a day.

If you’re going to be using a bicycle for more than a few days, you can definitely bargain for a discount.

If you have a bit of a need for speed, renting a scooter is also an option. Thanks to the almost non-existent laws, you don’t even need a license to rent one (you didn’t hear that from us). But you may have to pay a fine if the Goan police bust you riding unlicensed.

Renting a scooter is also dirt cheap. Not much more than renting a bicycle, in fact. It will cost you between $5 – 10 to rent a scooter for the day or even less if you negotiate a long term rental.

You can find scooters anywhere . Everybody has a few to rent. However, here are some local rental spots for bicycles and scooters:

ESTIMATED EXPENSE: US $5 – $20 per day

Oh, the glorious food of India – and the spectacular prices. Goa food has slightly higher prices than the rest of India but you can still pick up a meal on the street for $1.

Daily costs increase quickly when eating out three times a day. But if you don’t have a self-catering spot, be smart about choosing where to eat, to keep your costs down.

Indian food is aromatic, rich and full of spices. Sourcing out local spots and popular dishes is a must when traveling through Goa. You can try all the goodies without blowing too many bucks. Try some of these tasty local dishes.

• Samosas: $0.10
• Masala Dosa: $0.40 – $0.80
• Goan fish curry: $2 – $4
• Pork Vindaloo: $2 – $4
• Crab Xacuti: $3 – $7

The tried and tested method of keeping food costs down is to keep it local. Try to avoid shiny(ish) western restaurants in favor of buzzing local joints. Not only is local food cheaper, but it’s almost always better.

There are some great restaurants in Goa . However, sitting in a stiff tourist trap can’t compare to the cacophony of strange languages and the thrill of the unknown. Keep your wallet and your palate happy.

Where to Eat Cheaply in Goa

At this point, it’s pretty clear that almost everywhere is cheap to eat. Which is blissful if you love eating your way through a new place. Obviously, you can still drop dollars at some fancy beachside resort restaurant boasting ‘the best of Goan cuisine.’

We recommend that you don’t do that too often, though, and check out one of these cheap places instead.

• Street food in Goa: Is definitely the cheapest and best food. We know that some readers will be cringing at the possibility of the dreaded ‘Delhi Belly’. Don’t eat food that looks like it has been sitting for a while. And make sure it’s thoroughly cooked. You can pick up meals for as little as 10INR ($0,13). Try the delicious Masala Dosa, it’s the least likely to make you sick. And damn delicious.
• Local restaurants:  Otften known as Dhaba’s or resto’s are a great choice for an inexpensive sit-down meal. The prices are quite a bit higher than some really budget street dishes. From $2 to $10 for a meal, depending on where and what you’re eating. But it’s still cheap enough to enjoy a change of scenery from the chaos of street food.
• Thali restaurants: Are epic spots for very cheap, authentic Indian food. Thali is essentially a round platter of various dishes. You can get vegetarian, meat, fish or mixed Thalis and they are a taste sensation. The platters usually start at about $1.50 for a load of fragrant food.

ESTIMATED EXPENSES: US $ 1 – $25 per day

Remember when we said that flights would be the most significant part of trip costs to Goa? It might be alcohol. Not because it’s very expensive, it’s not.

But Goa is the party-state , after all. So there is sure to be a lot of boozing involved.

Okay, so maybe it won’t be the most substantial cost. But it could get pretty pricey if you don’t trade in your usual drink of choice for local beer and spirits. There are epic raves, beach parties and a million opportunities to dance the night away.

Keep it cheap with these local drinks:

• Local beers (ie, Kingfisher): $0.79 – $1.32 for a bottle
• Feni spirit: $1.32 -$2.64
• Amrut whiskey: $20 for a bottle

If you’re frothing for a craft beer, there are a couple of microbreweries popping up and some affordable craft beers on offer but these are expensive and few and far between. So even though you might be partying your way through Goa, alcohol does not need to be the death of your bank. If you keep it local, of course.

ESTIMATED EXPENSES: US $0 – $5 a day

Savor this section of our guide, it’s the best one. Why? Because some of the best places to visit in Goa are completely free. If you’re thinking of going to Goa, you are aware of the party scene. If not – spoiler alert.

Other than all-nighters and world-class DJs, you will probably spend your days lounging on beautiful beaches. Other than the snacks you’ll need to cope with the hangover, the lounging around is completely free.

Like the rest of India, there are a lot of colorful and vibrant markets. Of course, it’s free to window shop. But that’s probably not where it’ll end. So, where to go in Goa?

Goa isn’t really about seeing so much as about doing.  From Yoga to Macarame lessons to all-night parties, it is these things that will fill up your Goa itinerary and that keep travellers coming back to Goa year after year.

There are parties most nights during high season and admission prices vary. As a general rule, the more expensive it is, the worse it is. If you are into main-stream, then check out Baga and Calangute. Techno parties happen in Anjuna, Arambol and Morjim are usually cost 500rps ($7).

The legendary Goan trance parties happen in Anjuna and Vagator. Shiva Place does free parties every weekend and Shiva Valley throws an epic Tuesday party every, erm Tuesday – admission is now 1000rps ($13) for men but free for women. I personally advise avoiding venues like Origens and Hilltop as they are overpriced and underwhelming. Goa’s famous “party extras” are available at standard European prices.

Drop-in Yoga classes range from $2 – $4. Full yoga retreats in Goa are available and prices vary depending on length and intensity. Massage courses, macrame classes, and all manner of weird and wonderful courses are also on offer for great prices.

Budgets are made to be broken. Wait…that’s not how it goes. But it should. Because it doesn’t matter how meticulously you plan your finances, there are always unexpected costs.

Maybe you get a bit over-excited and bought the whole bar a round. At least you’ll have made some new friends. Or those Indian textiles are too tempting. What’s one more sarong?

We suggest putting aside at least 10% of your total budget for the unexpected costs. The slip-ups. The small emergencies. You’ll feel better if you know that veering off-budget a bit won’t ruin your entire Goa trip plan.

Goa is an awesome place to pick up wonderful souvenirs such as incense, Hindu gods, jewellery and a bunch of new clothes. It may be worth setting aside some extra cash and some space in your backpack so you can take some bedsheets home and psychedelic art.

Tipping in Goa

We’ve got good news and bad news, depending on how you feel about tipping. The good news is that tipping isn’t really the norm when backpacking India . The bad news is that tipping in Goa specifically is kind of expected – purely because it’s such a tourist hub.

The point is that you could get away with not tipping. But it would be a kind show of appreciation and respect to give 10% of the total bill.

If you’re staying in fancy hotels, then tipping porters and hotel staff is expected. And if you have the money to splash out on five-star hotels, then you have the money to tip.

• Use your haggling skills! At markets, at vehicle rental spots – everywhere. But also don’t be the tourist that takes advantage of poverty to pay peanuts for something that is at least the worth of almonds.
• Eat and drink local: Choose local food vendors and drink local alcohol to keep your costs down.
• Take public transport as much as you can. Sure, a taxi is easier and quicker, but public transport is cheaper and more of an adventure.
• Make use of communal kitchens or self-catering accommodation.
• Create a daily budget: But allow for some flexibility – you’re on holiday, after all!
• Have a water bottle : Don’t waste money on plastic, bottled waters; carry your own and refill it in the fountains and the tap. If you’re worried about potable water, get a filtered bottle, like the GRAYL, which filters out 99% of viruses and bacteria.
• Earn money while you travel: Teaching English while traveling is a great way to make ends meet! If you find a sweet gig, you may even end up living in Goa.
• Become a volunteer with Worldpackers : Give back to the local community and, in exchange, you’re room and board will often be covered. It’s not always free, but it’s still a cheap way to travel in Goa.

So, how expensive is Goa? We’ve done a deep dive into Goa travel costs and it’s safe to say that it’s not expensive. Being the tourist hub that it is, it has higher prices than the rest of India. But your money will still go far.

Every time someone asks me to recommend a Goa trip plan, I perform a little jig in my head! If you don’t know yet, Akshay and I, love Goa. It’s a place that we have visited over two dozen times in the last decade. It’s practically our second home and a place that we can’t seem to get enough of.

But that’s also why we feel sad when many people treat it like a long weekend destination. But, you? You are amazing because you’ve decided to spend at least 5 days in Goa. That’s also why you deserve access to the best Goa itinerary for 5 days available on the internet.

If you are spending 5 days in Goa, you should ideally spend 3 days in North Goa and 2 days in South Goa. The 3 days in North Goa should be spent exploring touristic Goa, unseen Goa and Panjim while 2 days in South Goa should be spent exploring beaches and touristic attractions between Benaulim and Palolem.

In this article, I will break down the perfect Goa itinerary for 5 day. I will give you details of tourist attractions, Goa beaches and Goa restaurants that you should visit. By the end of it, you will have your easy-to-follow Goa travel itinerary.

Goa is a state of India and in fact, one with a slightly more distinct cultural and historic background than most of the other states in India. But, if you want to only visit the touristic attractions of Goa while also briefly acquainting yourself with its culture and present-day way of life, 5 days in Goa are enough.

How to commute within Goa?

The best way to travel within Goa is on a two-wheeler. You can easily get a scooter on rent for around Rs. 400 per day. If you don’t want to rent a scooter, opt for a rented car or use local cabs. Bargain heavily with local drivers as they tend to overcharge innocent tourists. In most tourist areas, you can also use Goa Miles : a cab booking app similar to Ola/Uber.

The most Epic Goa Itinerary for 5 Days

Day 1: touristy north goa.

On the first day in Goa, explore the touristy side of North Goa. Here are some of the places you should visit and places you should visit:

Have breakfast/brunch at a cute café

The touristy North Goa is full of cafés with pretty interiors and a smashing breakfast menu. Some of my favourite cafés are:

Café Chocolatti: Spacious outdoor seating, delicious frothy coffee and a kickass English Breakfast

Café Candolim: Cutest decor, a large collection of books and the best food

Café Artjuna: Artsy vibes, great food

Jaws Bakery : Budget bakery serving fresh lip-smacking breads, croissants and more.

Visit Fort Aguada, the biggest fort in Goa

The biggest fort in Goa and the biggest freshwater reserve in Asia is in the heart of North Goa. You must visit this place on a 5 day trip to Goa. It is close to Candolim and offers great views. But hey, it’s usually crowded and not super pretty anymore. Yet, it is a great starting point for your Goa trip.

Go parasailing at Sinquerim Beach

Indulge in watersport activities at Sinquerim beach. I think that the watersport infrastructure is the best at this beach. The presence of multiple vendors also means that you get better rates.

Enjoy a boat ride at Nerul River

Goa may be famous for its beaches, but it also has plenty of rivers running close to its coastline. A boat ride at Nerul river is a great opportunity to watch dolphins, splash around some cold river water and click pictures of the coastal paradise that Goa is.

Eat at a seafood restaurant

Seafood and particularly Konkani seafood is to die for! (I am a vegetarian but I have seen my husband Akshay get excited about seafood in Goa months before our trip!) Some places that serve fresh, yummy and flavourful seafood are:

The Lazy Goose : Located right under the Nerul Bridge, the place offers exotic views of the river and offers you a chance to indulge yourself with the best seafood.

Fat Fish : This restaurant packs a generous serving of delectable seafood on your plate.

Vinayak: The seafood thali perfectly satisfies your pangs especially when you’re ravenous and want everything yummy on your plate.

Watch a magnificent sunset

The best places to watch the sunset in the touristy side of North Goa are:

Chapora fort : Head to this fort, also known as the Dil Chahta Hai fort, for the best sunset views. Reach the top at least 30 minutes before sunset to get a good place on the wall. Also, visiting the Chapora fort involves a bit of a climb. So plan accordingly.

Vagator Beach: Vagator beach is also famous for its sunset. Located at the foot of the Chapora fort, you get to see the same sunset, albeit at a slightly lower angle. A better option is to watch the sunset, especially, if you are feeling lazy to climb the fort or if you are travelling with young kids.

Morgan’s Place Café/Café Purple Martini : If you want to sip on your choice of beverage while watching the changing hues of the sky, hanging out at any of these cafés would fulfill your wish like nothing else in Goa would. Purple Martini is usually super crowded and the balcony views come for a cost. Settle for Morgan’s Place if you want great views without hosting.

Party hard at a nightclub

North Goa is a great party hub with the best clubs like Hammerzz, Titos, SinQ, etc. Go here if you love partying!

Day 2: North Goa

It’s Day 2 in Goa and it’s time to explore the slightly offbeat beaches in Goa.

Parra Road is a narrow road with coconut trees on both sides that has recently gained popularity thanks to the movie ‘Dear Zindagi’. Visit the road for a classic Instagram shot.

Visit the famous Siolim Church

St. Anthony’s Church is a gorgeous church located in Siolim close to the Chapora River. It is not a popular tourist attraction but is nevertheless worth a visit for its architectural beauty.

Chill at Morjim Beach or Ashwem Beach

Morjim beach is one of the most deserted beaches in Goa. Even on a weekend, you will find it relatively empty. You can plonk yourself on one of the sunbeds and spend a chilled out day. Take breaks at the many shacks on the beach. Also, visit the Turtle Nesting Site to know more about how magical this beach is.

Experience the hippie vibe of Arambol

Arambol is known for its hippie vibe, yoga classes and drum circles. It is the place that attracted the most number of foreign (especially Russian) tourists. Visiting the place exposes you to a unique side of Goa- the one taken over by touristic preferences.

Visit the ‘Garden of Dreams’ – a fun restaurant with a hippie vibe and appetising vegan food.

Day 3: Panjim/Old Goa

Panjim, the capital of Goa, is nothing like the touristic Goa that you would see on Day 1 and Day 2. It is rich in Goan culture and is a place where you see the cathedrals, churches and even a few temples close by.

Basilica of Bom Jesus

This is one of the biggest and most visited cathedrals in all of Goa. In fact, it is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its unplastered exterior is uniquely attractive.

It holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xaviers.

Entry to the cathedral is free. But on weekends and during peak tourist season, the place is very crowded. Expect long lines and a wait of about 20-30 minutes for entry.

On other days, you will get a fairly zero-hassle entry into the cathedral.

Mon to Sat – 9.00am to 6.30pm Sunday – 10.30am to 6.30pm

Se Cathedral

This Cathedral is situated right opposite the Basilica. Its Gothic architecture is attractive.

The Cathedral is famous for its Cross of Miracles.

Church of St Francis of Assisi

This Church is right next to the Se Cathedral. It was built to celebrate the victory of Afonso de Albuquerque over the Muslim army.

In fact, the road leading to the Church is also very picturesque and one of the best places to capture a stunning picture of all the churches and cathedrals.

There is also an archeological museum here that’s open on all 7 days. (9.00am – 12.30 and 3.00pm to 6.30)

The church is not open for tourists on Sunday.

Mangueshi temple

After the Christian side of Goa, it is now time to visit the Mangueshi temple.

The Mangueshi temple was a very important place of worship in Goa since many centuries. In the 16th century, the Gaud Saraswats (the community that worships Goddess Mangueshi) moved the temple from its old location to its present location with a view to protect it from the Portuguese invasion.

The temple has been restored a few times and not only does it look pleasing but it also exudes a serene vibe.

Eat at Ritz, Panjim

Ritz is one of the best seafood restaurants in Goa. It’s a favourite amongst both – Goan tourists and Goan locals. So while you are in the very neighbourhood of Ritz, it make absolutely no sense for you to skip Ritz from your itinerary.

So go to Ritz and order a sumptuous Fish thali for yourself. (And if you are vegetarian like me – just order their kokam solkadhi alongwith your favourite main dish and watch the satisfied faces of fish lovers around you!)

Foutainhas / Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church

The perfect afternoon walk would be through the lanes of the Fountainhas.

Fountainhas is the colourful quarter in Goa that retains Portuguese style houses.

You can go here for a nice post-lunch walk, for a quick bite at one of its bakeries or to get a picture clicked against the backdrop of one of its colourful houses to jazz up your Instagram.

Follow up your Foutainhas visit with a quick visit to the famous Immaculate Conception Church. You would recognize the church immediately because of its many Bollywood appearances. Again, a great place for a classic #goatrip picture for the gram

Miramar/Dona Paula

Close your day with a walk along Miramar beach. Miramar beach is one of the most non-touristy beaches of Goa. It is beach that’s most frequented by the locals of Goa.

But even though it doesn’t have too many touristy shacks, it’s a lovely place to wind down after a sightseeing-heavy day.

If an urban beach doesn’t excite you, you can visit the famous Dona Paula jetty.

Dona Paula jetty is also a famous filming location in Goa.

Day 4: South Goa Attractions

Start your day down south with a visit to some of the famous tourist places in South Goa

Naval aviation museum

Mind you, this is the only naval museum in Asia!

Plus, it is also one of the only two military museums in India.

If you love aircrafts, you’re in for a treat as the naval musuem houses 13 aircrafts.

Plus, the museum is designed to look like the interior of the aircraft carrier – INS Viraat – how cool is that!

Timings: Tuesday to Sunday from 9.30am to 5.30pm

Big Foot/Ancestral Goa

The Big Foot and Ancestral Portuguese House are located right next to each other.

One is a recreation of a typical Goan village. You will see life-sized statues of fishermen, rice farmers, etc. You will also see the statue of Mirabai (record-holder for being carved from a single stone).

I think the place is a great place to educate children and foreigners about the history of Goa and Goa’s typical village life.

Right next to the Big Foot is the Ancestral Portuguese House – Casa Araujo Alvares. It is a 250-year old house of a renowned lawyer.

A 20-minute guided tour takes you around the many rooms of the house. An excellent way to experience life as it was two centuries ago!

The house has also appeared in the Bollywood movie Singham.

Colva Beach/Benaulim Beach

You should end your South Goa sightseeing day with a trip to Colva Beach or Benaulim Beach.

Colva beach

• it is more crowded and attracts many Indian tourists
• it has plenty of stalls outside selling icecreams
• its silvery sand is great for a family outing or simply for people-watching

Benaulim beach

• Benaulim beach has some of the best beachside shacks in South Goa. Roger’s and Rafaels are particularly famous. You can even enjoy a quiet, romantic candle-light dinner here after sunset.
• You can enjoy some watersport activities here before sunset.
• Even though both Indians and foreigners love this beach, it’s usually less crowded than Colva

Day 5: South Goan beaches

The beaches in South Goa are scenic and far less crowded than North Goan beaches.

They are a great escape from the touristy madness of the North.

Today, visit a few of the beaches from the list below:

Mobor beach

This wonderful Cavelossim beach is usually pretty deserted. Its white sand would light up your drone shots.

But even if you don’t have a drone, it’s a great place for a quick breakfast, a romantic walk with your loved one or a game of football with kids!

There are many good places to stay in Cavelossim for couples and family travellers.

Agonda beach

This beach is one of the southern-most beaches in Goa.

The 2020 cyclone Nisarga damaged many of its beachside shacks. But today, without an army of beachside huts and restaurants, the beach looks even more stunning. The palm trees lining the shore add to its appeal. It’s quiet, deserted and encapsulates the beauty of raw Goa – Goa without tourism.

Palolem beach

If you like a slightly more vibey beach, visit Palolem beach.

It is as stunning as Agonda but adds a little touristy air to it with its beachside shacks and souvenir shops.

You can even take boats from here to go

• eagle-feeding
• island hopping to monkey and honeymoon islands
• dolphin watching

There are many good places to stay in Palolem, especially for group travellers and solo travellers.

Some wonderful restaurants in this area worth trying out are

• Ciaran’s – wholesome Indian food
• German bakery – delicious croissants and more!
• Kopi Desa – lovely ambiance, tasty food

Cabo de Rama

Cabo de Rama is one of the most special places in Goa. The cliff at the top is truly the best place in all of Goa to capture the Goan coastline decorated with coconut and palm trees around.

You can even climb down to the secluded little cove – Cabo de Rama beach to witness the most spectacular sunset in Goa.

The road leading to Cabo de Rama is pretty secluded with very few shops or houses along the way. Avoid wandering around alone in this area after sunset.

The 5-day Goa itinerary given above is a recommended itinerary. You do not need to strictly adhere to it or feel overwhelmed by it.

Goa is a state that’s unlike any Indian state and no matter how you spend your time in Goa, you are going to have a great time!

Some ways to personalize your Goa itinerary are:

• Ditch tourist places that don’t match your travel style – e.g., skip Old Goa if you’re not into churches or history.
• Add more beach time : If you are a beach bum, skip Panajim and hang out longer at beaches you like. You don’t even have to visit them all. If the beach close to the area you are staying in matches your liking, just spend your days there.
• Add more adventure: You can add more adventure to your itinerary by trying out watersports at Sinquerim beach in North Goa or Benaulim in South. You can even go boating at the Nerul river. Go on this incredible bungee jumping tour in Goa.

A 5 Day Travel Guide to Goa, India

Dropping off the tourist radar, I painted a lyrical Goa dotted with boutique charms and bursting with bespoke treasures.

Goa inexplicably exploded into the international consciousness – and in the minds of young Indians – on a single evening, New Year’s Eve 2001. All over the world, people learnt that this beachside slice of the Konkan was the hedonistic party destination of the subcontinent. And overnight, the tourism floodgates opened up for good.

WALK OF LIFE

For my guests and friends, I always recommend that the journey off the beaten track start in Old Panjim, the charming 19th century neighborhoods which together constitute the largest and most significant Latin Quarter in Asia, and one of the unsung gems of Indian architectural heritage. Here, many houses are still maintained by the families that built them, connected through the generations by a sophisticated, cosmopolitan living culture that tourists rarely glimpse. But you’re in luck because Dr. Luis Dias, whose family home is the historic old Mint House of the Estado da India, conducts exclusive bespoke tours of his waterfront locality, which culminates in a visit to his stunning heritage residence.

Similar walks are offered on appointment by Jack Sukhija, proprietor of the Panjim Inn heritage hotel complex. Rooms are available in ‘Hindu Colonial’ and ‘Catholic colonial’ houses, but I recommend the unique, antique-filled suites carved out of the People’s High School.

BLUE SUEDE SHOESEqually inventive, the ‘adaptive reuse’ of heritage buildings has given Panjim several individualistic boutiques that are all worth visiting. Apart from the one by Goan Designer Wendell Rodricks, model Sacha Mendes has curated a charming selection of garments and objects d’art in a tiny corner of her ancestral mansion in central Panjim. And in the Latin Quarter is the more modestly priced Syne, which houses the spirited creations of local designer Syne Coutinho

Fort Aguada Road

But when the first five star hotel, Taj Fort Aguada (now Vedanta by Taj), had opened in 1974, it was thought to be a highly risky bet. Conventional wisdom held that foreigners wouldn’t travel this far for a seaside holiday, and also that Indians would always remain solar phobes. So while that first resort dominated a pristine arc of beach, every other strip of sand in Goa was gloriously empty: no shacks, no touts, no rooms for rent. Hard to believe, isn’t it?

All that changed rapidly when mass tourism took off. Without adequate planning in place, a veritable tsunami of concrete haphazardly overwhelmed much of the once – beautiful shoreline.

Now Goa goes 24 hours, 365 days a year, cramming in almost three million tourists annually, more than doubling its population all through the high season. Now dozens of flights pour into the state from across India , and another thousand charters annually connect the state to a bewildering array of countries: Iran , Ukraine , Finland , and Taiwan .

But even as the rustic has become overshadowed by rush hour, the fact is that most of Goa’s original charms are resolutely intact if you know where to look. Step slightly beyond the blinking neon of the main tourist drags, and a beguiling, diverse and unique cultural landscape unfolds right in front of you.

And there’s a song at every turn.

Candolim Beach

I greatly prefer it to most places ‘on the beach’, with the exception of Rockheart, the beachside retreat of late adman Frank Simoes and his family, which is nestled in a quiet nook of Mandolin beach. About this blog: Seven days in Goa is a decent amount of time to design an itinerary brushing past Goa’s beautiful beaches and ancient heritage of ruins and churches. Needless to say, there are plenty of offbeat things to do in Goa which require a slow and immersive travel time. However, consider 7 good days to explore the state’s breathtaking beauty and indulge in fine coastal sea food that shall compel any gourmet to fall in love with Goa!

Please note, this week-long Goa itinerary is helpful for a first time visitor in Goa. It is packed with activities and day trips. If you are planning to relax, may be skip a few day trips and head straight towards South Goa, or Ashwem beach.

By the shore of Arabian Sea, Goa, a small Indian state sits pretty on the Western coast. Aside numerous pretty beaches dotting the sea, Goa unfolds luminous layers of history for a curious soul. A walk on the old Goa’s narrow cobbled (and UNESCO heritage) streets tells volume on the 450 years of Portuguese colonial past. Tambi Surla, a Shiva temple hidden on in the forest of Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary has stories to tell from another era. Beyond the sunny long stretched shore of Baga and Candolim, Goa keeps her secrets in the lagoons and backwaters of Mandovi river. It had always been my dream to travel to Goa for seven days. When I finally did, I wished if only I would have had another couple of weeks to explore all the splendors the state has on offer.

7 days in Goa needs to be allocated wisely!

Just to give a rough idea before I explain this 7 days in Goa Itinerary further, Goa can be segmented in 4 parts. This includes the most beautiful beaches of Goa . You may explore some of them in a long weekend vacation to Goa as well!

• Baga and Calangute: The two beaches on the North Goa are strategically located closeby. This is where maximum number of tourists visit. These beaches are usually crowded on tourist season (super crowded on long weekends). However, there are plenty of activities, cafes, places to stay. Expect to pay tourist price for everything.
• North Goa : Beyong Baga, there are beautiful beaches at the wee end of the north. Consider Arambol, Ashwem, Mandrem. They remain pristine and away from the hawk eye of vendors.
• South Goa : Away from everything, South Goa holds the true secret of freedom, which gave Goa its fare share of fame. beaches, forts, hikes and plenty of unexplored regions lies here. If you seek quaint, you must visit South Goa!
• Panaji : The capital of Goa, houses only a couple of local beaches. Panaji is where you will be heading if you are in Goa for work. Despite a lack of beach life, Panaji is famous for old Latin quarters, UNESCO heritage churches and vibrant local life.

Day 1: Reaching Goa & Stay at Baga

Stay at Baga, Dine by the beach

Assuming you are flying into Goa, you are ideally to reach Dabolim airport at the start of the day. If you are late, say reaching by 10 pm or so, it may be a challenge to get a mode of public transport to Baga. It is best if you get in touch with you accommodation provider. 

Kadamba line of AC bus fleet runs at least till 6 pm. However, public transport in Goa is still in its nascent stage.

If you are traveling by train, you have plenty of cabs to hire from the station itself. indian railway stations are identical that way. 

It will take at least an hour to reach from airport to Baga. 

Reserve this day for rendezvous with the beach. Expect a glorious sunset. 

Secure a seat by the beachside restaurants. Ratnakar is a fine choice if you like sheesha and alcohol with high streaks of energy. Tito’s is more famous among the tourists. Do make a reservation before you visit.

Alternatively , Goa also houses India’s only casino ships close to its shoreline. Since gambling is prohibited on Indian land, these casino ships are permanently anchored on the sea. They ensure even the rough waves of monsoon very well. I visited Deltin Royal Cruise on the fateful night of Cyclone Kyarr and did not feel a thing. The next morning, the fallen coconut trees of the Ashwem beach narrated the story.

Anyway, experiencing a cruise liner is a prized deal. The ship has various games on-board and forms of entertainment aside a large buffet. Sparkling goblets of wine galore everywhere. I did not find the food amusing though. If you like to party the night away, the Cruise liners of Goa will be your best choice!

Day 2: Birding at Salim Ali Sanctuary, Divar Island & Latin quarter at Old Goa UNESCO sites

Birding and heritage walk in Old Goa

Since Goa will have you for good seven long days, we will allocate a day for the hinterlands of the coastal state.

Wake up early and head towards the Divar island, Goa’s largest riverine island on Mandovi river. Ironic because in Konkani language, Divar means small.

Home to an exclusive high class wellness resort Mercure Devaaya, Divar island is intense on local heritage. Timeless Portuguese bungalows sleep under the shadow of banyan trees. Old churches and quaint little sleepy neighborhood covers Goa’s Mantra for peaceful life, Susegad.

Next to Divar island, lies Chorao island , connected by Ribandar ferry. Chorao island houses the famed Dr. Salim Ali Bird sanctuary. I think this can be a great educational experience for kids too. From mangroves to crocodile and mud-skippers & crabs, all join in to celebrates the fast depleting bird population.

Best time for birding at Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary: 6 am to 8 pm. “Afternoon no bird”, told me the guard at Mercure Hotel.

Some species of Birds that can be seen at Chorao island: Brahminy Kites, Egrets, Heron, Little Black Cormorants, Paradise fly catcher, Kingfishers, woodpeckers, Drongo etc.

No cost for passengers on the ferry. INR 10 for vehicle, in case you are bringing in a cycle. There is a ferry at 6:20 am.

If you reach early, you will find a guide, who shows around the island on a private boat and charges a fee.

On the way back, make a stop at Old Goa. Also known as Velha Goa, this is listed as WORLD UNESCO heritage site for cultural heritage of its numerous churches! It is also one of the first seats of Catholic Christianity in India.

Goa, during the rule of Portuguese was hailed as the Rome of the east. One look at the remnants of the Old Capital of the Portuguese in India, and you will know why.

Velha Goa houses some of the country’s finest cathedrals and Churches. Be it the whitewashed Se cathedral or the humongous Basilica of Bom Jesus, they are grand in structure, and stand witness to Goa’s regal past. A catastrophic plague outbreak and subsequent invasions led to Velha Goa being abandoned.

There are plenty of other churches and historical areas to be visited in close vicinity. Here is a list of Old Goa’s famed churches:

Take care while exploring the area, especially if you are on your own. The narrow alleys and old houses are often prone to snake attacks.

Head towards Fontainhas , the Latin Quarter of Goa. This is the last stop before you are heading back to the beach at Baga.

Often termed as the Old Quarter or Latin Quarter of Goa , Fontainhas houses Old Portuguese Bungalows that are painted with a riot of color. Do not be surprised if they resemble like one quaint little town from an obscure European countryside. The houses has old school wall sized glass window, panes of which is colored in white. Oftentimes, an Azulejos tiles adorn the gate.

There are two beautiful eateries at Fontainhas. They are, Venite Bar and Viva Panjim . Both are quirky and very photogenic (okay, Instagrammable places in Goa). Google both and choose where you wanna visit. Joseph Bar remains as one old world wonder at Fontainhas! If you are craving for good Konkani cuisine, head towards Saib . I love their fish Thali. Awadh House is one of the better places to eat in Panjim if you are craving fro delectable Awadhi cuisine of North. It differs from the Punjabi Thalis to a large extent so try if you are a meatlover.

Truth is, I have seen neighborhoods like Fontainhas in multiple places while exploring the interiors of Goa. However, Fontainhas has opened its arm for tourists, with beautiful galleries, guest houses, and cafes and is located strategically in Panjim. You will not get these benefits in the rest of old neighborhoods in Goa, though they seemed to be more rustic and authentic.

The best part of Fontainhas is, you can retire here for a day, if you can let go the call of the beach. A few famous home stays at Fontainhas are: La Maison , the Caravela Homestay , Abrigo Fontainhas , Mateus Boutique Hotel, the White Balchao . A good Hostel in this area is the Old Quarter .

Considering it is a long day since early morning, it is recommended to put up at Fontainhas. However, if you have to, you can be back at Baga or Calangute. Try to make it before the sunset so that you have beautiful view of the setting sun behind ocean.

Baga has a number of beachside accomodation. Feel free to check the may. I would recommend a few based on previous experiences: Casa Cubo , Goa Beach House , Casa De Goa Boutique Resort.

Day 3: Beach Hopping to North Goa, Visit a night Market

Explore beaches of North Goa: Vagator, Anjuna, Morjim, Ashwem, Mandrem, Arambol

The day starts with exploring the beaches of North Goa. Rent a bike and start early. Things you need for a bike rental: 1. Government ID for deposit. You get it back once you return the bike, with fuel recharged. 2. INR 250 per day as rental fee (seasonal variation is expected) 3. Goa, like the rest of India, drives on the left of the road

Paved highway stretches till the wee end of the state border. You can ride as far as you want. Make pit stops on the way for a quick sugar cane drink, or snap a postcard of the rural huts adorned with floral design. You can take a detour off the highway and make pit-stops among the coconut groves for that quintessential Instagram shot.

Originally, it was shot in ar Parra. I am talking about the famous Goa scene from the Bollywood movie, Love you Jindagi, where Alia Bhat cycles amidst pristine verdant valley dotted with coconut trees with a hill at the backdrop. Now the village is raged with tourist footfall and is on the verge of charging tourists an entry fee.

I suggest skip Parra and look out for a similar setting off the main road, which lies plenty in Goa. Drive towards up north till you reach Vagator beach. The cliff hides the moon-shaped beach from prying eyes of the world.

From Vagator, head towards Morjim beach. Morjim is a rocky beach. Tidal waves bare up the sandy shore in day time. If you are looking for a beach to swim, head towards Ashwem. I stayed by the Ashwem beach at Yab Yum Resort for a couple of days and vouch for the relaxing vibe here. It is a crescent shaped beach, great for swimming. The waves swell well and make it a choice for surfers too.

I suggest stop at the La Plage for lunch. The beachside restaurant serves great French cuisine.

If you want to explore more beaches up north, you have Mandrem and Arambol on the same coast line. Saddle up the bike and wizz past green patches of verdant valley, cow shades, backwaters, dry river beds. You have reached the last wilderness of Goa!

Heading back to Baga from this area is a good 1.5 hours drive. Road is good. I have even seen traffic jams on certain days post sunset. In this route, there are 4 scenic spots to watch the sunset. You choose one based on your preferences.

Sunset points:

• Chapora Fort (of Dil Chahta Hain movie fame) for adventurers
• Sunset point at Anjuna for those who love a rocky beac
• Romantic sundowner at the Thalassa Cafe, small Vagator beach
• Arambol Beach where sunset takes place in the rhythm of iconic drum circle by the last remaining hippie trail (Far off from Baga hence be prepared for a long drive back home)

On the way back, make it a point to stop at the night markets of Calangute. You may also plan a visit to the iconic Anjuna Flea market which runs every Wednesday from 9am to 6pm. Once a place where Hippies traded their exotic European made items, now is flooded with Chinese products, swimwear and costume jewelry.

Once you are back in Baga, rest for a while. For dinner, head out to Souza Lobo. Now running by the third generation of a local family, Souza Lobo is a beach side iconic bar and served amazing cheese baked crab. Highly recommend.

Day 4: Indulge in some watersports & reach South Goa

Fort Aguada, Sinquerim beach, Travel to South Goa

This is the last day in North Goa for this one week itinerary. To make the most of it, we will let our adrelanine rush through! Today, we will flirt with the crazy waves of Arabian sea.

From Baga, head straight towards Aguada beach. The Portuguese Fort stands erect for centuries keeping a close eye against enemy invasion. Aguada is also famed for filling ship tanks with potable water in olden days.

A four storey light house stand at the end of Aguada. Explore the fort and find a a way to the Sinquerim beach which lies next to Aguada.

Watersports at Sinquerim Beach

People from all over India head towards Sinquerim beach for a number of watersports. From benign banana boat to dangerous jet jet ski, you name it and you get it! Kitesurfing, parasailing etc takes place too.

I suggest go for parasailing. You fly high over the Arabian sea, with the Aguada fort on left and endless ocean on the other side. It is simply breathtaking.

Prices vary depending on demand and seasonal footfall. Also, water sports activity is closed during monsoon owing to killing wind and swells. we paid INR 2000 per head back in 2017 for parasailing.

Heading towards Palolem Beach, South Goa

It is time to head towards South Goa now. While South Goa does not match up to the North Goa when it comes to party or lively vibes, it hides stretches of pristine, verdant land and some of the finest beaches of Indian subcontinent.

From the Central bus station at Panjim, bus ply towards Margaon in South Goa till 6 pm. It charges a nominal INR 30/50. You can also rent a car or a bike and drive towards Palolem in south. On the way, make it a point to stop at the ruined fort of Cabo De Rama. If you can make it during Sunset, you will be getting pristine shots! Cabo De rama is one of the most offbeat things to do in Goa.

Day 5: Beach day at Palolem & Patnem

A relaxing beach day in Goa by the world famous Palolem beach

From Yoga to Cow watching to boat-ride to catch a glimpse of the Dolphins, you have an entire day to relax and soak in the glorious sun in Goa on this day! In this 7 day long itinerary of Goa, this is probably the first day of a beach living.

As we say, “Der Aye par Durast Aye.” It came late but it came in style!

One of the leading reporting agency listed Palolem as Top 20 places to visit in Asia or sorts, you know what I mean. Ever since, a number of tourists head towards Palolem and long for a stay by the coveted beach hut. Colorful bamboo made beach huts adorn the sea-shore. With tourists came shops and cafes too.

However, Palolem remains significantly off the beat beach destination in Goa, compared to Baga or Calangute. Tourist footfall has not yet disrupted local life. Early morning, you can see fishermen busying themselves for the day’s toil. A dog and a cow will join you at the beach as you tan yourself. Overall, it remains one of the laid beach beaches in Goa and feels nice.

In the evening, walk towards, Patnem, a smaller and lesser known beach located close by. I think it is 10 minutes walk. It is beautiful nonetheless.

Day 6: Choose a day trip between Dudhsagar or Karwar

Dudhsagar Waterfalls embodies what monsoon does to the state of the Goa, with its lush green dense surrounding amidst the steep of the Wetern Ghats and four tiered cascading flow of white water, meaning ocean of milk. Located at Mollem, South Goa, Dudhsagar calls for a day trip and trekking up the hill to experience something ethereal. The waterfall is shared between the states of Karnataka and Goa.

It is located by the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. A few spice plantation and a farm stay is located close by too. Tambi Surla, a twelfth century Shiva temple is located here.

If you are heading towards Goa from Bangalore by train, make a stop at Castle Rock. From Pune or Mumbai, stop at Kulem. Shared Jeep goes till the waterfall if you are not too keen to trek the entire distance. Also, there is a daily cap on the number of people allowed to visit, especially during monsoon. Do take an account for that while planning for Dudhsagar trekking.

The trekking is through dark long tunnel made a century ago, now abandoned. Lifeless train tracks kiss the ground. Aroma of fresh rain makes one dizzy. You reach the fall and reach a small natural pool, where swimming is allowed. You can even change to a swimsuit.

If you are journeying by train through Konkon coast, you will get a full view of the falls. It looks spectacular during comsoon. earlier train used to stop for a few minutes. However, trains just slow down these days and do not stop.

Usually fed by torrential rain, Dudhsagar loses its glory during dry season. Though the trek is rewarding nonetheless.

Alternatively, visit the Karwar Beach

“The sea beach of Karwar is certainly a fit place in which to realize that the beauty of Nature is not a mirage of the imagination, but reflects the joy of the Infinite and thus draws us to lose ourselves in it. Where the universe is expressing itself in the magic of its laws it may not be strange if we miss its infinitude; but where the heart gets into immediate touch with immensity in the beauty of the meanest of things, is any room left for argument?” Rabindranath Thakur

If you are not too keen on trekking to Dudhsagar Falls or traveling during turbulent monsoon, I suggest drive towards Karwar. Located by the coast of Uttara Karnataka, Karwar is an untouched region, where local flavor is very strong. It is only half an hour’s drive from Palolem. It is where kali river meets Arabian sea.

Karwar has a beach named after Rabindranath Thakur. Tagore beach, as they call it, also houses the annual three days Karwar festival. For me that is reason enough to fall in lve with Karwar.

You can also visit nearby pristine islands, provided low tide, and a ruined fort named Sadashivgar.

Kurle Ambat , the delightful Crab Masala of Konkan region is a must have while traveling in Karwar. Also, the iconic Gadbad ice cream, where bits of fresh fruit tease cold cream gently in a tunbler! Hotel Amrut is particularly famous for sea food platter. The ghee roasts and sukka tells you that you are truding a fine border area, close to Goa yet so not Goa!

Karwar has plenty of water sports but rates are cheaper than Goa. The beach also houses INS Chapal Warship museum. INS Kadamba (named after the Kadamba dynasty of the region) is Indian naval base located at Karwar.

Day 7: Beach day & Return

The seventh day in Goa beckons. The seven days in Goa whizzed past, right?

I know. Goa always does this. She akes up for a tremendeous trip and only leaves you wanting more of Goa.

If you are roadtripping in Goa and live somewhere down south, afternoon is a good time to start. If you are headed back towards Mumbai or the airport, you need to pack up early. Palolem is is 60 KM away from Dabplim. On a good day, it is a 90 minutes drive. But we suggest account for another hour extra. Dabolim is a small airport and sometimes the queue can get painfully long.

Assuming the flight/train is scheduled at night, you still have the morning to explore a few more beaches of Goa. It is all the more possible since the drive is through the coastal route.

Following are the beaches you can stop by while heading back to the airport.

• Agonda beach
• Colva beach
• Betul beach
• Varca beach
• Benaulim beach

Instead of beach hopping, you can also make a quick day trip to the nearby Butterfly beach from Agonda. Secluded by high cliffs, Butterfly beach can only be accessed by a boat. It looks a lot like a small lagoon with clear water. Butterfly beach is famous for Sunset views.

Agonda has plenty of good places to eat. I love Little Plantain leaf in Agonda. Love Bite is a great choice too for cozy vibes.

If you have a little longer than 7 days in Goa, I suggest follow this itinerary but spread it evenly. Keep a day to explore the beaches of south. Take two days to relax by Palolem beach and one extra day at Ashwem beach in North. Thus, you get to enjoy Goa for 10 days and indulge in the best things to do in the sunshine state. This itinerary equally covers the heritage and beaches of Goa.

If you are heading to Goa during monsoon, may be add one day for Divar island. Monsoon in Goa makes plenty of beaches off limit for tourists with coast guards barring entry. They are justified because Arabian sea becomes a demon with undercurrent pulls etc. Shacks do not open either. That said, monsoon in Goan hinterlands is breathtaking with lush green Western ghats and hidden waterfall trails!

I’ve never been parasailing but it looks so fun! Especially getting a view of the beautiful beaches.

Goa looks so beautiful to visit! Dudhsagar Waterfalls looks stunning with the train tracks that go beneath it. The food there looks really yummy as well.

Dudhsagar Falls looks particularly incredible – it kind of reminds me of Multnomah Falls in the US with the way the bridge goes across it. We didn’t make it to Goa on our India trip, but southern Indian food is one of my all-time favorites so next time we’ll definitely be checking this region out!!

The Perfect 3-Day Goa Itinerary for Slow Travel.

On my first trip to Goa as an adult, my partner and I stayed at an “offbeat” beach that had already been invaded by overtourism. That experience, filled with characterless beach shacks, multicuisine food and hordes of tourists, turned me off Goa.

Much later, I returned to experience slow travel for the first time.

I’ve returned to Goa pretty much every year since, sometimes for several months, and sometimes for a few days. Each time, I’m reminded that slow travel isn’t about how much time we have but how we choose to spend it.

Thanks to this ever-growing connection with Goa, I’ve advised so many friends on how to make the most of their Goa trips. This day-to-day itinerary includes some of my favorite adventures and spots, and takes you away from the beaten path to a slower, more intimate experience of the Goa I love.

Goa Trip Plan for 3 Days

With that in mind, my recommended Goa itinerary is one that allows enough time and mind space to live and breathe its slow, susegad life – even it’s just over 3 days.

These North and South Goa itineraries aim to take you away from the well-trodden tourist path, and challenge the idea of Goa you’re probably familiar with. They are filled with meaningful outdoor, culinary and cultural adventures that often get buried under the sun-sand-party scene of Goa. These experiences also support small local businesses, and protect Goa’s living culture and natural ecosystems – ensuring that your 3-day trip is not only fun and memorable, but also positively impacts Goa.

3 Day Goa Itinerary at a Glance

North Goa Itinerary for 3 Days

Where to stay in north goa.

There is something for every budget in Goa, but in all honesty, a lot of it is sh*t. Since the surge of remote workers and revenge travel in the last few years, accommodation prices in Goa have been soaring. Sadly, many ‘homestays’ have turned into commercial businesses, and you often end up paying a lot for not very hospitable experiences.

Here are some places I recommend:

Cancio’s House, Aldona

Stay in the outhouse cottage of a 500-year-old traditional Goan home at Cancio’s House , hosted by three generations of the Amaral family! I’ve stayed here several times over the years, and each time, I’m amazed by the warmth, wealth of stories, and Goan recipes I get to try (even as a vegan ). The village of Aldona may have changed quite a bit over the years, but it still retains its Goan charm – a 16th century church, lush rice paddies, old Goan houses, and their quirky owners, always a delight to chat with.

Siolim House, Siolim

Located at easy driving distance from both, the cafes and restaurants of Assagao and several beaches across North Goa, Siliom House is a restored 17th century heritage house turned into a boutique hotel. An ode to the casa do sobrado style of Goan-Portuguese architecture that is fast disappearing from the state.

Jardin d’Ulysse, Morjim

Located right across the beach from Morjim, Jardin d’Ulysse was my go-to spot for ‘work from home’ days afternoons from their breezy terrace overlooking the sea, and delightful, vegan-friendly food from their kitchen. The huts out back are aesthetically crafted to invite the elements of nature in – perfect to work from, and have some beach time.

Botanique, Assagao

One of the OGs of Assagao before its hotel and restaurant scene exploded out of control, Botanique retains its original character in a restored Goan house, with the addition of Japanese food at Izumi in its backyard.

Mojigao, Assagao

Built on the philosophy that there should be no borders between the inside and outside world, my friends still rave about their stay at Mojigao . Its wood and tiled roof cottages are scattered among the wilderness of Assagao, with a cafe (a branch of Artjuna) overlooking the greens, in-house yoga classes and several independent music gigs through the week.

The Secret Garden, Saligao

I wrote parts of my first book at The Secret Garden – a traditional Goan house painstakingly refurbished by a Goan-British couple, and now home to its own food forest. On offer are heartwarming conversations, sourdough pancakes (YES!), and swimming under the stars.

Where to eat in North Goa

Goan thali and local Saraswat cuisine

Even after all these years of visiting and living in Goa, I’m surprised to learn about Goan food I haven’t tried before. While family kitchens (like Raquel’s kitchen in Cancio’s house) are the real treasure trove of Goan dishes, the true blue Goan thali at Kokni Kanteen is a good starting point. My favorite Goan restaurant is Mum’s Kitchen in Panjim (avoid the Assagao branch), where I love the uddamethi and tamdi bhaji with sanna. A breakfast spot I love is The Local Table , for a wicked patal bhaji.

Best cafes and restaurants in North Goa

North Goa can spoil anyone for choice, but as someone who looks for vegan-friendly, preferably organic and nourishing food, some of my favorite places include Bloom & Brew in Assagao, The Rice Mill in Morjim, Bean Me Up in Vagator, and Moka in Siolim.

How to Spend 3 Days in North Goa – Day 1

My Goa trip plan for 3 days can be mixed and matched, depending on your mood and the weather:

Get to know your Goan neighborhood

Whether you’re staying in Aldona, Saligao or elsewhere in North Goa, take the morning to acquaint yourself with the slow Goan life. Go on a long walk to the local church, along the rice paddies, and past old Goan homes (noticing how many of them are in a state of disrepair). Stop by to pick up poi at the local bakery, visit the morning market where local farmers sell their produce, and aim to have a chat with atleast one local. Getting yourself into the pace of Goa is a great way to set yourself up to slow exploration over the rest of the trip.

Cycle or e-bike on the sleepy Chorao island

Away from the crowds of Calangute and Baga, escape to the island of Chorao for a glimpse of Goa that once was – full of wild mangroves, endless paddy fields, and glorious old houses with a balcao. Sign up for a guided cycling or e-biking ride with Cycling Zens or B:Live , exploring the quiet beauty of the island on two wheels – one of the best places to see in goa in 3 days. Remember to carry your own reusable water bottle to stay hydrated!

Find pre-loved delights in Vagator

It’s so exciting that Goa finally has its own thrift store – Good Karma , in Vagator. Featuring pre-loved clothes, accessories, shoes and books, this is not just a way to buy second hand, but also buy stuff embedded with the stories of strangers. If you have clothes and books in good condition, you can also donate them to the store. Part of the profits are channeled towards local non-profits like WAG (Welfare for Animals in Goa).

Shop for organic, fair trade clothes at No Nasties

Ditch the wasteful fast fashion brands taking over Goa and other parts of the world, to shop at No Nasties – a homegrown, organic, fair trade store in Assagao. I bought my first t-shirt from No Nasties over eight years ago, and it’s still serving me well! This kind of slow, ‘I can wear this forever’ fashion, is a guilt-free answer to the overconsumption plaguing our planet.

How to Spend 3 Days in North Goa – Day 2

Hike to a secret waterfall or swimming hole

Wake up early morning for a Goan adventure far off the beaten path. Head to the far reaches of the Western Ghats, to go on a forest hike for a short while or half a day, depending on your interest and abilities. Swim in a secret waterfall, or jump into a forested swimming hole (like the cenotes in Mexico!). Wrap up the outdoor experience with a traditional Goan meal cooked by a local family. In these wild pockets lies the realization that there’s so much more to Goa than the cocktails-and-sunsets long promoted as its cover image.

Two of my favorite adventure travel companies run by local Goans who genuinely care about protecting these wild areas and their geo-locations are Beatroute Explorers and The Local Beat . Expect to spend the entire day on their trips, including a long drive to a hidden location, short or long hike, plenty of chill time in the outdoors, and homemade lunch with a local family.

How to Spend 3 Days in North Goa – Day 3

Take a surfing lesson with Salty Soul

Of course you’re in Goa and you want to spend some time by the sea! Take your playfulness in the waves a notch up by signing up for a surf lesson. As someone who used to watch surfers with awe, I never imagined I’d be able to get up on a surfboard someday. But the waves in Goa are gentle – and one of the best places to learn, or atleast experiment. There’s nothing like the adrenalin of catching a wave! My go to surf spot is Salty Soul , run by two Goan surfers in Mandrem.

Have a lazy beach day

Have your sun, sand and sunset evening in Goa after all. Laze at the beaches of Morjim or Ashwem, or venture further ashore to Keri. After sunset, stay for a quiet beach walk under the sunset sky, as the stars shimmer out one by one.

A full moon night: Catch a Hindustani classical music performance, alongside some incredible sushi, at Tien in Vagator.

An alternate Sunday: Go for the New Earth Gathering at the Offbeat Goa Space – a vegan, community market bringing together local and resident entrepreneurs who specialize in all things natural and eco-friendly. The venue is in the same space as the Good Karma thrift store.

South Goa Itinerary for 3 Days

While a lot of restaurants and events are clustered around North Goa, I recommend staying in South Goa for a quieter, slower, closer to nature holiday.

Where to stay in South Goa

Casa jaali, patnem.

A stunning vibe with small cottages overlooking the roaring coast, Casa Jaali is perfect to stay a weekend or a few days, in the heart of South Goa in Patnem. I love the food at the vegan-friendly, in-house cafe too!

Tanshikar Spice Farm, Sanguem

Conveniently located as easy driving distance to some stunning waterfalls and vegan-friendly cafes in South Goa, Tanshikar Spice Farm is a working, family-run organic farm, with unique huts scattered across cashew and black pepper plantations. The traditional Goan food on offer – made largely with organic in-house produce – is some of the best I’ve had.

Mangaal Farmstay, Quepem

In a protected area of South Goa, Mangaal Farmstay is a working organic farm that has all the Bali feels. Lush forests, farmlands and old Goan villages where time seems to have stopped. Oh, it even has its own private waterfall, a 1.5 hour trek away!

Cabo Serai, Canacona

Hidden away on a hill near the Cabo de Rama Fort, Cabo Serai is an experience unto itself. Accessible only by a short hike, the stunning pinewood and thatched roofed huts are built to leave no trace. On offer are stunning sunset hikes, innovative plant-based food, and thoughtful eco-friendly touches. One of my favorite eco-lodges in India!

Alila Diwa, Majorda

Architecturally inspired by Bali and Goa, I loved the laid back vibe of Alila Diwa , the infinity pool overlooking the rice paddies, and their Dine in the Dark Thursdays! If you’re looking for a luxury resort experience with familiar comforts, yet a boutique feel that is very Goan, this is your spot.

*Note that Mangaal Farmstay and Cabo Serai are experiences unto themselves, and located quite far out from the other activities of South Goa.

Where to eat in South Goa

Cantine indienne.

Cantine Indienne is a rustic, farm-to-table eatery in Palolem, run by a French-Tamil couple. They turn the organic oyster mushrooms grown in their backyard into crunchy ‘wings,’ and offer other creative delights like pesserattu  (green mung dosa), beetroot curry, oyster mushroom pickles, and wild spinach and horsegram stir fry. Yum!

Go to Bibhitaki for healthy comfort food inspired by Ayurveda. I love (read drool over) their sumptuous smoothie bowls, and recommend the Mexican Bhel as well as the hearty Mexican and Japanese Buddha bowls. So good.

How to Spend 3 Days in South Goa – Day 1

Explore your goan neighborhood.

Whether you stay in Canacona or elsewhere in South Goa, take the morning to observe and flow with the slow life of Goa. Find out about all churches in your backyard, stop for a chat with Goans on their morning walk, and pick up poi at the local bakery.

Learn about spices and cashews at Tanshikar Organic Farm

South Goa is the land of spices and cashews, and Tanshikar Organic Farm is one of the best places to visit in Goa in 3 days. Spices like black pepper and cardamom are grown organically here, on 25 stunning acres. Stay for a lip-smacking Goan lunch, much of it cooked with organic ingredients!

Have a quiet evening at Patnem beach

While away the evening at the relatively quiet Patnem beach. Swim in the waves, catch the sunset, and walk under the stars with the Arabian Sea humming in your ears.

How to Spend 3 Days in South Goa – Day 2

Go on a hiking adventure.

Hike to a sea cave or go on a moonlit forest walk in the wilderness of South Goa. We did the guided sea cave excursion with Adventure Breaks – which involved a short ocean hike and scrambling over some rocks to reach the west coast’s largest sea cave! An easy one, good for most ages and abilities.

Visit Cabo de Rama Fort

There are plenty of places to visit in Goa in 3 days, but if you pick only one in the south, pick this. Built in the medieval times and last restored during the Portuguese era, the Cabo de Rama Fort is full of history and panoramic views over the Arabian Sea. If you’re up for another walk, a trail winds around the fort, offering panoramas in all directions. If you’re tired, pick your spot for a stunning sunset over the ocean!

How to Spend 3 Days in South Goa – Day 3

Take a surf lesson on agonda beach.

I’m yet to go surfing in South Goa, but surfer friends recommend catching the waves at Agonda Beach for all beginners. Aloha Surf is a popular surf school in the area.

Learn about Goan culture and cuisine at Palacio Do Deao

On the shores of the Kushavati River, travel back to a different era at the 200+ year old mansion that is Palacio De Deao . A blend of Portuguese and Saraswat architectural styles, it’s the perfect place to learn about ancient Goan culture and its Portuguese history, over a sumptuous traditional Goan meal. How to Plan a Trip to Goa

Best time to visit Goa

Goa is different every season – both in terms of landscapes and crowds. My favorite time is monsoon in Goa (July to September), when the paddies are lush green, it’s not as busy as the rest of the year, and the waterfalls and swimming holes are the most inviting. For surfing and beach life however, the winter months from October to January are ideal.

How to reach Goa

Take the scenic Vista Dome train from Mumbai to Goa, or the Vande Bharat from Bangalore to Karwat. Other places across India are also connected with long train journeys to Margao in South Goa or Thivim in North Goa.

The overnight buses from Mumbai or Bangalore to Goa are convenient for short trips.

The quickest way to get to Goa is to take a flight to Dabolim (GOA) or MOPA (GOX) airport.

How to get around in Goa

There’s a standing joke that almost every shop or house in Goa (especially close to the beaches) can arrange a scooter or taxi! Taxis can be expensive, with short routes costing as much as ₹600-1000. Scooter rentals usually cost ₹300-400 per day, depending on the length of stay. Ask for a newer bike and model. My favorite is an Activa 5G. Alternatively, rent a bicycle or e-bike from Cycling Zens. Cost depends on the duration of rental.

Estimated Cost of a 3 Day Trip in Goa

The cost of a trip to Goa can vary wildly, depending on the budget and comfort level you’re after. Besides accommodation costs, I recommend budgeting atleast ₹5000 per day, including a scooter rental, a mix of cafe and thali meals, and some activities. It is possible to do a Goa budget trip for 3 days if you eliminate any paid hiking, surfing and shopping.

What not to do in Goa

• Plan a trip to Goa for 3 days only 😉 The real essence of Goa is in slowing down and spending longer. But if life doesn’t allow that right now, I hope some of the experiences I’ve recommended above will allow you to slow down mentally anyway.
• Try to cover all ‘must see places in Goa’ in 3 days. Instead of running from one place to the next to try to do everything, pick a few things that really interest you and enjoy them deeply. It’s always nice to have a reason or three to come back.
• Stay in accommodations that have cut down Goa’s green cover. Sadly, a lot of the fancy villas in Goa fall in this category. I’ve seen it happen before my eyes – they cut down stunning old trees, put in luxury villas and apartments, and raid the local wells for water (delivered by a tanker). Avoid them, please.
• Photograph people and their homes without permission, especially in Panjim. Fontainhas, Panjim’s charming Latin quarters, has become overrun by impolite tourists climbing into people’s yards, going uninvited into their homes, peeping in through their windows, and photographing them without permission. It’s sad to see signs all over prohibiting photography, and hearing about the animosity local residents now feel towards tourists.
• Block the road to take the same photos as everyone else. Goa has plenty of pretty, palm-lined by-lanes, but a stretch of road in Parra – popularized by a Bollywood film – has become full of wannabe influencers and selfie-takers, constantly disrupting the flow of traffic.
• Leave without trying Goan food. I’ve met so many people who’ve been to Goa but have no idea what Goan food is. Sadly authentic Goan food is not as easy available as it should be, but make the effort to try it at a restaurant like Mum’s Kitchen or Kokni Kanteen. Ideally pick a vegan option, that’s kinder to animals, the planet and our own health.
• Ignore the locals and their quirks. I love that Goans have a strong collective identity, along with quirks that can only be understood once you get to know atleast a handful of them. Staying with a Goan family at Cancio’s House, attending a Goan-centric gathering at the Museum of Goa, or having a meal with local hosts at Palacio Do Deao are some ways to do that over a short period of time.

I used to swear I would never create itineraries on this blog, but multiple friends have convinced me otherwise. This is my first attempt at creating a meaningful 3 day itinerary for Goa, and through it, I hope you too will be able to experience the art of slowness and contentment in a place I love so much.

Goa, undoubtedly, is the best holiday destination in the country. Its scenic beaches, hippie vibes, laid-back lifestyle, and vibrant parties are major tourist pullers. However, Goa is not only about beaches and trance parties. It boasts delectable seafood, beautiful landscapes, and a wonderful blend of Indian and Portuguese cultures. Goa has many tourist attractions, some popular ones being Aguada Fort, Dudhsagar Falls, Basilica of Bom Jesus, Anjuna Beach and Baga Beach.

This beautiful coastal state has so much to offer that you need a minimum of 3 days here to explore its popular attractions. If you are planning a budget trip to Goa , the best time to visit the state is from November to February. These winter months with temperatures hovering from 21 to 28 degrees Celsius are just right to laze around the beaches and enjoy the party scenes. However, Goa experiences a huge influx of tourists during these months. Hence, make sure you explore economical accommodation options and plan a trip in advance to avoid the non-availability of hotels.

Budget Hotels in Goa

Reaching Goa affordably

Buses, personal vehicles and trains are economical ways to reach the state. If you want to take a bus, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), and Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) are some of the main bus service operators from Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and other nearby places. Tourists can also come in their own vehicles as the roads are well-maintained and perfect for a comfortable journey. Those driving from Bangalore and Mumbai can take the NH 4 route, while those travelling from Mangalore must take NH 17.

If you are opting for a train journey, Goa has two railway stations.

• North Goa from Vasco-Da-Gama railway station: 35 km
• South Goa from Vasco-Da-Gama railway station: 62.6 km
• North Goa from Madgaon Railway Station: 36.2 km
• South Goa from Madgaon Railway Station: 31.3 km

Goa has two railway lines. While the Konkan Railway Line connects Goa with Mumbai, Bangalore, Mangalore and Calicut, the South Western Railway Line connects the state with Chennai, Hubli, Belgaum, and different parts of Karnataka. Many trains connect Goa with Thiruvananthapuram in the South and Delhi in the north.

You can take a bus, unmetered taxi, or auto-rickshaw from the bus stop or railway station to reach Goa hotels or any other place in the state economically.

Things to see/do on a budget

There are plenty of tourist attractions for those exploring Goa on a budget . Apart from the beautiful beaches, you can visit these attractions without burning a hole in your pocket.

1. Aguada Fort: This popular fort in Candolim, North Goa was constructed in 1612. It exhibits Portuguese architecture and is a major attraction in the state. It is located at the top of a hill close to River Mandovi. 

• Entry Fee – Nil

2. Basilica of Bom Jesus: This UNESCO World Heritage Site was built in 1594 and is popular for its commendable baroque architecture. The basilica has a rich cultural and religious significance and is open to the public every day.

3. Dudhsagar Falls: This majestic, four-tiered waterfall is located on Goa’s Mandovi River. The beautiful cascading effect makes it appear like a milky white sea falling from a height. Monsoon is the best time to visit the Dudhsagar Falls .

• Entry Fee – INR 20 per person

4. Chapora Fort: Popularly known as the “Dil Chahta Hai Fort”, Chapora Fort in North Goa is a must-visit. You can go there in the evening to watch the splendour of the sunset sky and Chapora River.

5. Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary: This is a wonderful option for children, environmentalists, and photography enthusiasts. You can see some rare species of plants and animals here.

• Entry Fee – INR 5 for adults, INR 2 for children

Affordable Eateries, Goa

If you are a foodie, you can enjoy different cuisines in this stunning coastal state of India. Apart from delectable Goan food, you will find North Indian, South Indian, Chinese, Italian, fast foods, and more in eateries around Goa . Some affordable restaurants you can visit during your Goa budget trip are:

1. Cafe Real: This eatery serves lip-smacking North Indian and South Indian quick bites, such as puri bhaji, samosa, masala dosa, pakora and chana masala.

• Location: Near Azad Maidan, Panaji
• Average Cost: INR 100 per head
• Timings: 7:30 AM to 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 8:30 PM

2. Pesto: This popular restaurant serves delectable Continental and fast foods. You can enjoy foods like pasta, sandwich, pancakes, chicken burger, and omelette here.

• Location: Anita Lodge, Vagator
• Average Cost: INR 250 per head
• Timings: 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM

3. Little World: If you are looking for palatable vegetarian and vegan food in South Goa, you must try this eatery. It serves authentic European cuisine.

• Location: Opposite That Bar, Canacona
• Average Cost: INR 275 per head
• Timings: 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM

4. Kinara: This casual dining restaurant is popular for its seafood and North Indian, Goan, and Chinese cuisines. You can also enjoy fresh juices and cold beverages here.

• Location: Phoenix Estate, Margao
• Average Cost: INR 375 per head
• Timings: 11:00 AM to 11:30 PM

Where to shop on a budget, Goa

Apart from sun, sand and sea, Goa is also known for flea markets and night markets. When you plan  a Goa budget trip , make sure you include the following markets in your itinerary.

• Anjuna Beach Flea Market: Clothes, home decor, Indian spices, musical instruments
• Arpora Night Market: Clothes, knick knacks, footwear, helmets
• Panjim Market: Spices, cashew nuts, curry pastes, port wine
• Mapusa Market: Handicrafts, Goan pottery, spices, textiles, jewellery

You can easily plan a budget trip to Goa and enjoy a memorable stay with your loved ones. Choose small eateries and remember to bargain while shopping. Also, book your tickets and hotel rooms at least a month in advance as prices may go up later.

How much does a 4-day Goa trip cost? If you are planning a trip to Goa, this question must be on your mind.

The cost of your 4 days trip to Goa will depend on a number of factors. These include – the time of the year you are visiting, the mode of external and internal transport, the accommodation type you select, etc.  

What I love most about Goa is that it is one of those travel destinations that can be luxurious and backpacker-friendly at the same time. Depending on what you prefer you can determine the cost of your Goa trip. In this blog, I help you calculate goa trip cost for 4 days. I will also tell you ways in which you can minimize costs.

The best part about Goa is that it suits all kinds of travellers. Goa is affordable for luxurious travellers as well as budget travellers and backpackers.

How much does a 4-day Goa trip cost?

Goa is a wonderful destination. While most people associate Goa with beaches, there is much more to Goa than the ocean. There are beautiful forts, old Portuguese churches, temples, spice plantations and much more to explore.

If you are visiting Goa for the first time, I would suggest you spend at least 4-5 days here. The cost of this trip can vary immensely on what you choose to do and how.

Before I go into the details of how much does a 4 day trip to Goa cost, here’s a quick overview. All these costs are per person:

External Transport Cost – Cost of Travelling to Goa

If you are not from around Goa, the cost of travelling to and from Goa will form the bulk of your 4-day Goa trip cost. You have three options to reach Goa- bus, train and flights.

Below I have given the cost estimates of travelling to Goa via each of these transportation options from India’s five major cities. If you are travelling from outside India, you also need to add the costs of flights up till these cities to the goa trip cost for 4 days.

Cost of Travelling to Goa by Train  

Trains are also the most cost-effective way to reach Goa. Irrespective of which city in India you plan to visit from, Goa is very well connected by a network of railways. There are three main railway stations in Goa- Thivim, Vasco De Gama and Madgaon. Depending on your boarding destination, you can find trains to one or all of these railway stations in Goa.

If you are coming from Delhi, I would suggest you take the Rajdhani Express. Of all the trains on this route, Rajdhani is the fastest and includes all the meals. However, there is no sleeper coach in the train and 3- Tier Ac coach is the cheapest (3600 INR).

Similarly, from Mumbai, you can find many trains on the routes on all days, so finding a train will not be difficult. However, when it comes to other cities, the train service is limited. From example, there is one direct train from Howrah Junction to Vasco De Gama and Madgaon junctions and it runs on alternate days.

If you are travelling to Goa from Chennai there is only one direct train from Chennai to Goa and it runs every Friday.

Trains are the most cost-effective way of reaching Goa from any Indian city. Goa is connected with all major Indian cities.

Cost of Travelling to Goa by Bus

Since Goa isn’t that far from Bangalore and Mumbai, you can also choose to travel to Goa by bus. You can choose from a number of buses including sleeper, AC sleeper, AC seater etc. There are a number of private and government bus services on this route.

Cost of Travelling to Goa by Flights

Although the most expensive flights are the fastest way to reach Goa from Bangalore. There are frequent flights at different times from each of the major cities. If you want to save time, you can travel by air. I would suggest that you book your flights well in advance t avoid any last-minute surges.

Cost of Accommodation for 5 days Goa trip

Goa is one of the most visited travel destinations in India. Therefore, as with other popular destinations, during the peak season, the cost of accommodation tends to stay high. November to early February is the most visited time of the year in Goa. So, if you plan to visit Goa during this time, be prepared to shell out extra for accommodations.

February to October is a relatively less busy time for Goa. You can find quiet spots on the beaches and it’s not a task to find suitable budget accommodation. How much does a 5-day Goa trip cost would also depend on the accommodation you choose? In order to calculate the accommodation costs, I am assuming that you will be staying for 4 nights. If you are travelling in as a couple or group, you can either book an entire apartment, choose a guest house or stay in a budget hotel.

If you are travelling alone, the best way to cut accommodation costs is to crash in a hostel. The most amazing part about Goa is that it has some of the best backpacker hostels. Cost of Internal Transport for 5 days Goa trip

Another major factor that determines the answer to your question of how much does a 5-day Goa trip cost, is the type of transportation option you choose.

When you are travelling within Goa, there are several options you can choose from There are local buses, ferries, taxis and autos. Below I have given a brief overview of each of these options and the costs associated with each one of these.

Local Buses in Goa

Local buses are one of the cheapest modes of travelling in Goa. There are plenty of buses that ply between 7 am to 7 pm. These buses connect most of the visitor attractions in Goa including the beaches.

The main bus stations in Goa are at Mapusa, Panjim, Vasco da Gama, Margao or Madgaon) and Canacona. Panjim is the main stop and you can easily find buses from Panjim to Old Goa, Baga Beach, Calangute Beach, Vagator Beach, etc.

Madgaon bus station is another major bus stop. From here you can find buses to Panjim, Ponda (for Elephant Bathing and Spice Plantations) Vagator Beach, Anjuna Beach, Baga Beach, Calangute Beach, etc.

Pilots in Goa

Goa has a unique concept of Pilots. Pilots basically mean taking a pillion ride with someone on a bike,  If you are a solo traveller, you can use these bike rides for getting from one place to another. Although they are more expensive than buses they are faster for sure.

Self-drive Two-wheelers in Goa

I would strongly recommend this as the preferred mode of travel, especially to those travelling in an even number group. This is the most convenient way of transportation in Goa. You can easily rent a two-wheeler like bikes or scooters, almost everywhere in Goa. They charge on per day basis and you have to add the fuel costs.

Taxis and Auto Rickshaws in Goa

These are the most expensive means to travel in Goa. Although they are easily available, they are the least cost-effective. You must know that the taxis and Autos don’t go by the metre and charge at their own will.

If you plan to use these services, negotiate beforehand to avoid any last-minute surprises.

Ferries in Goa

Some places in Goa are connected by ferry services. These ferries are time saving and cost-effective. The only problem is that most of the times they are super crowded.

The ferries connect a very few locations in Goa. Here are some important routes connected by ferries –

• Old Goa and Divar Island
• Ribander and Chorao for Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary
• Querim and Tiracol
• Cavelossim and Assolna
• Panaji and Betim
• Cortalim and Madkaim for reaching Old Goa from Margao

Sightseeing in Goa can be easily done using local buses and self-drive vehicles. Buses are the cheapest mode of internal transport in Goa and they connect all major attractions in Goa like Old Goa and Beaches, including Palolem which is one of the best beaches in Goa. 

Cost of Sightseeing & Activities for 4 days Goa trip

Sightseeing costs would depend on what places you intend to cover. While beaches are free to visit, not every place is. Here are some of the costs for some of the most in-demand activities.

Watersports

When you are n Goa, you might want to enjoy some watersports. You can enjoy activities such as banana boat ride, windsurfing, jet Ski, Parasailing, etc. There are many packages available at the beaches for watersports. One of the most popular is for 2000 INR. This includes parasailing, jet ski, speed boat ride, etc. I suggest you keep no more than 2500 INR for the activities.

Goa is well known for its cruises. I would recommend you take the sunset river cruise and dolphin cruise. The cost per person is around 500 INR and 300 INR respectively.

Parties & Casinos

Parties and Casinos are expensive. If you want your Goa trip to be on a budget, I would recommend you avoid these. You may have to shell out between 200- 5000 INR for a single party or visit to a casino.

Cost of Food for 4 days Goa trip

There are a number of food options in Goa. You can save money on food by avoiding too many alcoholic drinks. Food will cost around 500 INR per day. Therefore, for 7 days, the food cost will be about 2000 INR

Miscellaneous Costs of Goa Trip

Other than all the things that I have mentioned above, you might also want to spend on other things =, for example – shopping. I am assuming the miscellaneous costs to be 2000 INR per person. Although, this is another place where you can cut down costs.
