Want to view a manatee close up in Brevard waterways? Here's some spots you could see them

Portrait of Michelle Spitzer

Florida recently ranked as the top state in the U.S. to photograph wildlife and the state’s manatee population is part of the reason why.

African tour and safari company Go2Africa analyzed locations of almost 70 million pictures from Flickr, an online photo management service, to gather its findings. Boaters often spot manatees, also called sea cows, in the wild, but what if you don’t have a boat?

We’ll let you know where you can see these giant, gentle creatures, when and what to do if you see them.

How many manatees are in Florida?

There are more than 8,350 manatees in Florida, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission . At one time manatees were considered endangered, but they were reclassified to a threatened species under the federal Endangered Species Act in May 2017.

Counting manatees can be tricky. Warm weather, which makes manatees too spread out to count, has hindered efforts to keep track of them in recent years.

State law mandates manatees be counted every year from land and aircraft. However, this can only be done when conditions are feasible, which is usually a cooler winter day. Even then there can be obstacles like water ripples, glares from the sun and overlapping manatees.

Florida Atlantic University in South Florida is experimenting with using artificial intelligence to help track manatees. Researchers are exploring using computers to recognize a manatee's unique elliptical shape in surveillance camera images.

Where to find manatees in Brevard?

Let’s make one thing clear: there is no guarantee you will see manatees at any of these locations. However, if you want to spot one, these are likely your best places to go to.

When the weather is cold, manatees tend to huddle together in warm waters. There’s a canal on Desoto Parkway in Satellite Beach, just east of South Patrick Drive, where the sea cows are known to gather on colder days.

Other spots include Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge  in Titusville,  Thousand Islands Conservation Area  in Cocoa Beach and  Turkey Creek Sanctuary  in Palm Bay. There also are numerous companies you can hire to take you on kayak tours through some of these areas for better viewing opportunities.

Manatees, which are herbivores, rest and feed in shallow water. That helps make them visible, but also more susceptible to being injured by boats, one of their biggest threats.

What do you do if you spot a manatee in Brevard's waterways?

The most important thing to know if you see a manatee in the wild: do not touch it. Just let these creatures be.

Adult manatees are typically about 10 feet long and weigh roughly 1,000 pounds. But these guys can grow to more than 13 feet long and more than 3,500 pounds.

That’s nothing you want to mess with, even if they look slow and gentle.

Also, do not attempt to feed the manatees anything. It is illegal under state and federal law to do so.

Where else can you spot manatees in Florida?

If you’re headed on a road trip, there are plenty of other places around the state where you can see manatees in the wild.

These are spots most recommended during winter months.

  • Blue Spring State Park, Orange City
  • Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, Crystal River
  • Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park, Wakulla Springs
  • Fanning Springs State Park, Fanning Springs
  • Lee County Manatee Park, Fort Myers
  • Manatee Lagoon – FPL Eco-Discovery Center, West Palm Beach
  • Manatee Observation and Education Center, Fort Pierce
  • Manatee Springs State Park, Chiefland
  • Spring Bayou near Craig and Coburn Parks, Tarpon Springs
  • Tampa Electric Company (TECO), Apollo Beach

A Guide to Seeing Manatees in Crystal River, FL

Crystal river is the only place in florida where you can swim with manatees. find out how to meet a manatee and get to know these awe-inspiring creatures better..

Did you know that Crystal River in Citrus County is the only place in Florida where you can swim with manatees ? During the winter months, hundreds of manatees head to our bays to warm up and escape the colder temperatures throughout the Gulf of Mexico. If you’d like to see manatees up close, here’s everything you need to know about experiencing these “gentle giants.”

Which months are best for seeing manatees?

The peak season for observing manatees is November through April, and the local manatee population swells to its largest size between December and February. You can spot manatees in our waterways all year round, but the population is much smaller during the summer months.

What time of day is best for swimming with manatees?

When planning your trip, consider visiting the springs in the early morning and during the middle of the week. Local springs will be less crowded on weekdays and the manatees are most active and playful in the mornings.

Where can you go to see manatees?

Manatees typically live and play near the warm waters of natural springs. Three Sisters Springs and Homosassa Springs are two of the best places to find manatees. Local tour operators and nature guides provide a variety of options for experiencing these awesome sea creatures. From swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding to snorkeling and diving, there are many ways to meet a manatee while you’re here!

Can you touch the manatees?

We’re so glad you asked! Thanks to our community's commitment to the health and safety of our large manatee population, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service encourages passive observation, which means not initiating contact with manatees and calmly observing from a distance and at the surface. Visitors must NOT approach a resting or feeding manatee, chase a manatee, kick/splash/poke a manatee, or touch a manatee.  For more information, we recommend watching the US Fish and Wildlife video Manatee Manners for a complete overview of the legal guidelines. If you head out on a swimming tour, then your guide will also share all the do’s and don’ts for interacting with these precious creatures. Swimmers and divers should minimize noise, avoid splashing, and make slow, deliberate movements. Manatees are very curious and social and they will frequently approach humans in the water.

Can you see manatees without getting in the water?

There are many ways to meet manatees without taking a swim. You can view manatees at the Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park , which serves as a refuge for rehabilitating captive-born manatees and helping them return to the wild. The park’s daily educational programs are open to the public. Three Sisters Springs in Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge is another location where you can observe manatees by land. You may also find a local tour guide to set up a boat tour, kayak tour, or paddleboarding trip.

Where can I learn more about manatees?

Check out our amazing manatee facts page or visit the Save The Manatee Club website for more information.

How can I help protect manatees?

Visit the Save the Manatee Club website to find out how you can donate and get involved in protecting this endangered marine mammal. You may also find opportunities to help on the Defenders of Wildlife Website .

They spend most of the year lounging and hunting for seagrass in the Gulf of Mexico and flock to our crystal clear springs to stay toasty during the winter months.

Florida’s springs remain a constant 72 degrees year-round. This may seem cool to us, but it’s just right for manatees. And nobody knows how to locate these amazing creatures better than our expert guides.

Between November and April, Kings Bay on Crystal River in Florida welcomes the largest aggregation of manatees in the world, and we are going swimming with these magnificent creatures. Crystal River: Manatees, Where to Stay & Trip Planner

how to swim with manatees in Crystal River, Florida

The first time I saw a manatee in the water, I mistook it for a rock.  I first saw the manatee from the beach at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo, Florida.  It had been surfacing for air at the edge of the swimming area, so eventually I put on my fins and snorkel and swam out for a closer look.

Unfortunately, it had moved closer, and I found myself floating in the murky water about 12 feet above a walrus-shaped rock, beside another smaller rock… and quickly realized it was a female manatee and calf!

But then I panicked. Did mama manatees get territorial? She was ENORMOUS! The pair slowly swam off, but I vowed to learn more about these creatures. I wanted to find out where in Florida was the best place to swim with manatees.

Where to See Manatees in Florida

Since that trip, I’ve learned that manatees are just as gentle and slow as they look – essentially big, swimming, adorable potatoes .  After that brief encounter, I decided to return for another trip to Crystal River and Homosassa Springs, Florida, one of the best places to see manatees in the United States.

Read on for my tips for planning your own trip to swim with manatees in Florida: how to find a boat tour company, where to stay, and other tips for visiting Crystal River.

Manatee Haphazard Rating: 2 of 5. Manatees are slow, gentle creatures. Where: Crystal River and Homosassa Springs, Florida To See: Manatees, state parks, local wildlife , the “Weeki Wachee mermaid show” in Homosassa To Eat : Dan’s Clam Stand, Island Outpost, Monkey Bar When to Go: Late fall through early spring is “Manatee Season.” The best time of year to spot manatees is November – March.  Basically, the colder the better – as the Gulf of Mexico waters warm, you will see less manatees in the springs

Best Place to See Manatees: Crystal River, Florida

Located in Florida about 75 miles north of Tampa, Crystal River is a seven-mile long waterway fed by more than 30 underground hot springs. It connects Kings Bay with the Gulf of Mexico, and its cluster of hot springs keep the water temperature at a constant 72°F (22°C) year-round.

Because of this, Kings Bay and Crystal River can be home to up to 600 manatees who migrate there during the winter, when the waters cool in the Gulf of Mexico.  Together with neighboring Homosassa Springs, Crystal River is the site of the largest gathering of manatees in North America.

Many boat tour companies operate in this part of Florida, so you can easily book an excursion here to snorkel with manatees.

Facts About Manatees, AKA Sea Cows, AKA Your New BFFs

Some fun facts about manatees to get things started:

  • There are three species of manatee, named for the area where they live: the Amazonian manatee, the West Indian manatee, and the African manatee.  West Indian Manatees are the ones found in Florida’s waters and the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Manatees prefer shallow coastal areas and rivers where they feed on seagrass, mangrove leaves, and algae.  Adult manatees weigh 800-1200 pounds and can eat up to 10% of their body weight each day!
  • Because of their low metabolic rates and minimal fat protection, manatees can’t handle prolonged exposure to water temperatures below 68°F (20°C).  They can develop a condition called cold-stress syndrome, which can be fatal.
  • Manatees surface every 3-5 minutes to breathe.  When they sleep, they surface every 15 minutes or so for air, then return to their resting position without waking!
  • Manatees are believed to have inspired mermaid legends.  Upon seeing one himself, Christopher Columbus purportedly declared them to be “not as beautiful in person.”
  • The closest living relatives of manatees are elephants.
  • Manatees have no natural predators, however their buoyant bodies and slow speed put them at great risk for boat collisions.
  • The gestation period for manatees is 12 months, and calves stay with their mothers for up to 2 years.  They nurse from nipples located in the mama’s armpits (flipper pits?).
  • In 2017, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service downgraded the West Indian manatees’ status from endangered to threatened.  Both significant increases in the manatee population numbers and habitat improvements led to the downlisting, according to the FWS.
  • Manatees can live up to 40-60 years in the wild.
  • Conservationists recommend against feeding wild manatees, or even giving them drinks of fresh water from garden hoses. (Sometimes you see people doing this from their boat docks.) Most importantly, you don’t want manatees to become dependent on humans.

Rules for Interacting with Manatees

The right way to interact with manatees is called “passive observation”: float in the water a safe distance from any manatees, and wait to see if they approach you.  Avoid excessive splashing or noise.

The best way to swim with manatees is with a tour company. They will tell you all the rules, provide the necessary equipment like wetsuits and snorkels, and know the best manatee-spotting areas.

Usually, your tour will begin with watching a video on interacting responsibly with the manatees.  Above all, they are still a threatened species, so chasing, poking, feeding, hugging or riding manatees will get you kicked out of the tour, and possibly a fine or even jail time.

According to one of our captains, he had called the fish and wildlife warden on a misbehaving boater the week we visited.

Crystal River Manatee

The Best Time to See Manatees

The best time of year to encounter manatees in Crystal River is November – March.  Basically, the colder the water, the more manatees you will see, since they stay close to the river’s underground hot springs to keep warm.

At the end of March, the waters of the Gulf of Mexico begin to warm, and the manatees will begin moving out into the Gulf more each day.

We did two manatee encounters – an afternoon tour in Crystal River, and an early-morning excursion in Homosassa Springs. We went at the end of the season, in early March, so the waters of the Gulf were already warming.

Based on this, I would definitely recommend morning tours if you’re there early or late in the season. Also, weekdays have less water traffic overall from other boaters, so you might get a better experience. I definitely recommend staying a few days so that you have some flexibility in case of bad weather.

Crystal River Trip with River Ventures

Our afternoon Crystal River manatee tour was a 3-hour excursion with River Ventures .  They’re a pretty big outfit – with a large gift shop, lots of booking options, and add-ons you can buy like photos taken by their guides.

Overall, the trip was great, but the afternoon time meant we didn’t see as many manatees.  I also felt like our group size was a little large, but maybe that was because we didn’t see as many manatees.

If I go back, I’d definitely do their longer “semi-private” 4-hour tour with a smaller group. And Crystal River is the location with the clearest water if you plan to take photos of manatees.

I didn’t travel with kids, but for people who want a great family trip, River Ventures allows kids 3 and older to participate.

Homosassa Springs Excursion with Snorkel With The Manatees

Our morning Homosassa excursion was with Snorkel With The Manatees .  They were recommended by our vacation rental office, and what I liked best about them was their small group size: 6 people is the maximum for their tours.

They also were super friendly and really seemed to care about the manatees and local conservation. While the water in Homosassa wasn’t as clear, we were able to hang out in one area where manatees were passing through.  We probably saw around 25 manatees during our 3-hour excursion, and the only other folks around were private boaters (not leading tours).

Snorkel with the manatees allows kids 2 and older to swim with the manatees (per their website).

Is it Responsible to Swim With Manatees?

I worried about this before my trip. I’m against most animal-encounter tourism like SeaWorld, elephant rides, dolphin swims, and tiger petting.  (Years ago I found I myself at what I thought was a botanical garden in Thailand, only to find out they had cheetahs chained up for photos and an elephant show.  Now I do better research!)

After having a manatee experience, I think it’s better for people to encounter manatees in a supervised setting, with education on how to interact in their natural environment. Most importantly, I believe manatee tourism has brought more awareness and conservation efforts than we might see otherwise.

Other Things to See Near Crystal River

Getting There & Where To Stay

For your trip to see manatees, the closest airports to Crystal River are Tampa and Orlando, and it’s best to rent a car to get around.  In case of bad weather, I recommend staying a few days so that you have options for rescheduling tours.

Hotels in Crystal River seem to book out very far in advance!  We reserved a vacation rental through Lakeside Vacations in Inverness, about 20 minutes away.  If you’re traveling with friends or family, I think it’s a great option.  The rentals have 3-4 bedrooms and some even have pools.

Other recommended hotels:

  • Plantation on Crystal River – hotel, marina and golf course, with restaurants on site.
  • Retreat at Crystal Manatee – great reviews for this recently renovated hotel in a convenient location to area sights and restaurants.
  • Crystal River vacation rental: Moss Rose Vacation Home Great for families or groups!
  • Homosassa Vacation rental: Riverfront Treetop Bungalow More space for your getaway, including a full kitchen and living area.
  • Dan’s Clam Stand – a perfect stop after a manatee tour.
  • Island Outpost – friendly local charm and great eats.
  • Monkey Bar – food, drinks and local music, with an outdoor patio overlooking the Homosassa River. This spot is super convenient after a manatee tour, but lately their reviews are so-so.
  • Starting Gate – a great local breakfast place, open only on weekend mornings.

Don’t Forget

  • A dry bag for your phone, keys and anything else you don’t want to lose track of or get wet.
  • A towel, sweatpants and sweatshirt for the ride back (maybe a coat – it can get pretty cold on the return boat trip!).
  • An underwater camera , or you can often rent one from your tour company.  In that case, you’ll need to buy or bring your own memory card.
  • A prescription dive mask if you wear glasses.  You don’t want to miss seeing these cuties!  Otherwise, equipment including a wetsuit is provided (confirm with your tour operator).

My Guide to Booking the Best Manatee Tours in Crystal River, Florida

Not far from the maddening crowds of Florida’s theme park epicentre Orlando, a natural world of hidden treasures awaits those with the desire to detour from the well-trodden tourist trail.

Defined by the mangrove laden tributaries of its namesake the Crystal River, during the chilly winter months (November to March), this unassuming coastal enclave plays host to the largest population of manatees anywhere in the state .

Nicknamed the ‘Manatee Capital of the World’, the gentle aquatic herbivores that inhabit the 70 or more natural springs which feed Crystal River’s Kings Bay have become the region’s main attraction for residents and visitors alike.

Planning a visit to Crystal River and looking for travel advice and itinerary suggestions?

Here’s my guide to booking the best hotels and best manatee tours in Crystal River Florida ; I can assure you that like me, you’ll leave with manatee fever.

When to visit Crystal River to swim with manatees

crystal river manatee trip

On the basis that most travellers who read this are planning to visit Crystal River to meet the wild manatee population I thought I’d better start with the best time of year to plan your trip.

Manatees actually much prefer to be out in the Mexican Gulf feeding on sea grass, however when the water temperature drops they have to seek shelter in warmer coastal waters. As such, the highest population of visiting manatees arrive during the winter months of November through until mid-March when they seek shelter in the warm water of natural springs like those in the Crystal River.

The best time to see manatees in Crystal River is late January/early February when the waters in the Mexican Gulf drop to their coldest all year.

The best manatee tours in Crystal River for active eco travellers

crystal river manatee trip

The main take-away from my time in Crystal River was the sensitive nature of manatee tourism .

Crystal River is the only region in Florida where you can legally be in the water with manatees, and as such, the local council and tour operators have an ongoing responsibility to make sure that tourism does not have a negative effect on the behaviour and well-being of the visiting manatee population.

With this in mind, here are a few things to consider when booking a manatee tour:

crystal river manatee trip

  • Read Tripadvisor reviews and check social media channels before booking. Make sure the reviews and images online reflect ‘passive observation’ , not display images of people touching and harassing manatees.
  • All operators are required to show guests a video entitled ‘manatee manners’ which outlines the correct in-water behaviour to minimise the impact of your visit on the animals. Make sure you get to see this, and be mindful of these rules when in the water.
  • If you can, discuss with the tour operator which sites they plan to take you to . Some areas can become crowded at times and although less-popular, alternative locations with fewer people in the water can offer a more intimate experience.

If you have your own vehicle ( I picked up a Hertz rental car from Orlando Airport on arrival ), I would highly recommend booking your manatee tour on the neighbouring Homosassa River.

crystal river manatee trip

Just a few short miles from the Crystal River (and still part of the Crystal River region), the Homosassa is lesser known, and with fewer operators you’ll find you’re one of only a handful of people in the water at any one time .

Best manatee tour guide: review of Mellow Mangrove Charters

crystal river manatee trip

My best manatee tour experience was during a private tour with Captain Sean Daugherty of Mellow Mangrove Charters ; setting out at around 7:15am one Sunday morning we were the only boat on the water for at least an hour. Slowly making our way to a secluded spring around a 15 minute ride from the dock, I spent 90 minutes in the company of five different manatees who seemed very happy to have me hang out with them in the shallows.

Captain Sean clearly knew the river like the back of his hand, and spoke passionately about his commitment to protecting the integrity of manatee tours on the Homosassa and Crystal Rivers. He impressed upon me the importance of remaining as still as possible when in the water, and ensuing that any interaction was initiated by the manatee , and not by me touching or stroking the animals.

Check out this video of one of the interactions I was lucky enough to experience. This was filmed on my GoPro 5 with a dome port lens attachment and a selfie stick.

Cuddly manatee in the Homossassa River That moment when a manatee gives you a cuddle and your heart just melts 😍😍😍During my stay in Crystal River, Florida, I spent a lot of time in the water with manatees, and travelled with local guides and people who dedicate their lives to protecting this magnificent species. Because Crystal River is the only place in Florida where you can legally swim with manatees, I was conscious of the current conversation regarding whether swimmers should be allowed to touch the manatees, or whether passive observation would be a more positive way to co-exist with these amazing mammals. Because of this I was always conscious of not touching the manatees, but floating silently beside them, watching them as they made their way around the springs. However, one morning, very early, I went out to swim in the Homossassa River, and I was fortunate enough to meet a male manatee who was clearly as fascinated by me as I was by him. Making sure that I didn't harass him, I floated beside him, and watched as he acquainted himself with me, nudging my arms and investigating my snorkel and mask. After around 45 minutes of swimming alongside him, he seemed to reach out to me, and take my arm toward his chest, to simulate a sort of hug. I feel incredibly privileged to have experienced such an intimate moment with a wild animal, and encourage everyone to respect the boundaries between man and the wild. #DiscoverCR Posted by Wanderlusters on Friday, 9 February 2018

Best hotels in Crystal River

Crystal River boasts a range of accommodation options with everything from budget to high-end. When planning my stay I knew that I wanted a comfortable option that offered value for money , and was close to most activities and a range of restaurants and eateries.

As such I chose the Plantation on Crystal River , and I wasn’t disappointed.

Review of the Plantation on Crystal River

A relaxed waterside resort, the Plantation offers Floridian charm in abundance . Set aside the banks of the river and boasting a traditional elegance, the resort’s amenities are second to none, and their restaurant serves up the best brunch buffet I’ve ever eaten.

With an onsite golf club, spa pool, and water sports team who offer manatee tours and sunset cruises , this is the ideal destination for a five day stay in Crystal River.

Check their latest availability now, then take a look at their river cam for a real time view of happenings at the Plantation.

Best adventure activities in Crystal River

crystal river manatee trip

Although best known as the home of the Florida manatee, Crystal River boasts a varied array of outdoor activities , including kayaking, scuba diving, bird-watching, and fishing.

Having spent five days exploring the region, here are some suggestions for your itinerary:

Meet a manatee at the Three Sisters Springs boardwalk

crystal river manatee trip

If you’re not inclined to get in the water to meet a manatee, the Three Sisters Springs boardwalk is the place to go. Set around one of the most popular manatee hangouts in the Crystal River Region, Three Sisters is like the manatee equivalent of a day spa ; they come here for a little rest and relaxation.

During the peak manatee season you’re guaranteed to find a least a handful of manatee chilling out here, and thanks to the gin-clear water of the spring, you get a great view of them from above the waterline .

Go Kayaking on the Chassahowitzka River

crystal river manatee trip

Affectionately known as ‘The Chaz’ the Chassahowitzka is a spring-fed river that wends its way through five miles of Citrus County’s most unfettered terrain, and for those with an active interest in the natural world a kayaking excursion is a must .

Offering the opportunity to catch sight of a veritable menagerie of species, the headliners of which are the bald eagle, the manatee, and the iridescent kingfisher, a day on the Chaz is full of unexpected surprises.

I booked a three-hour guided kayaking tour with the team at Hunter Springs Kayaks and highly recommend their chilled-out, eco-friendly approach.

Try paddle boarding in Kings Bay

crystal river manatee trip

Perfect for those who prefer to explore at their own pace, a paddle board rental offers the opportunity to avoid the main river traffic and head to some of the more secluded spots in the bay.

I launched my board at Hunter Springs Park and during my two hours on the water I saw lots of manatees including a manatee mummy and her baby, and a pod of dolphins who came into the bay to feed just before sunset.

Take a sunset cruise to the Gulf of Mexico

As part of their activity suite the Plantation on Crystal River offer a sunset cruise which offers the opportunity to see some of Florida’s outstanding Nature Coast, and an uninterrupted view of the sun setting into the oceanic horizon of the Gulf of Mexico .

Meet Lu the hippo at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park

Lucifer, or Lu as he is known, is the Crystal River resident hippo that you simply have to meet . The only hippo in the world to be granted Floridian citizenship, yes you read that correctly, Lu lives in the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park just a short drive from Crystal River.

Although not native to Florida, the residents of Crystal River petitioned for him to remain in the park after the state decide to house only endemic species at the facility. He’s actually become one of the park’s main attractions!

Visitors can also enjoy the park’s underwater manatee viewing station , as well as the opportunity to visit a whole host of endemic Florida wildlife such as black bears, snakes, alligators, and crocodiles.

How to get to Crystal River, Florida from the UK

crystal river manatee trip

By far the quickest route from the UK to Crystal River is to fly from London Gatwick to Orlando, and then pick up a rental car and drive the two or so hours on to Citrus County. I flew Premium with Norwegian and can highly recommend their service .

Over one metre of legroom, a premium meal service, and two checked bags of 20kg come as standard with the ticket price. Not only that, their new state-of-the-art aircraft are faster, greener and help reduce the effects of jet lag .

QUICK FACTS

Norwegian fly a year round direct service between London Gatwick and Orlando International Airport

  • Flights are operated by a fleet of brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft with two cabins – Premium and economy

To book visit  www.norwegian.com/uk  or call 0330 828 0854

Planning a self drive Crystal River itinerary

crystal river manatee trip

Regardless of where you’re visiting from, a self drive Crystal River itinerary is ideal for the active and adventurous traveller. I was able to book a comfortable rental car with Hertz for just 37USD per day and it gave me the freedom to explore the region at my own pace.

It also meant that I could book a private manatee tour and be out on the water before anyone else, something which afforded me the opportunity to have a more intimate encounter on the Homosassa River.

You can pick up a Hertz rental car from both Orlando Airport and from a depot in Homosassa (a five minute drive from Crystal River).

  • A large selection of vehicles are offered at all locations – check options here
  • Bookings can be amended up to 48 hours before collection
  • Rental helpline is open 7 days a week

That animal looks so big, but the pictures are great!

Wow! Such a spectacular experience, Charli. I would love to go on a manatee tour one day and enjoy the dive! Florida, here I come! 🙂

Great suggestions! I have been to Florida but I haven’t heard of Chrystal River before. I would love to swim with the manatees but apart from that, your sunset shot was pretty awesome!

For those wanting information about guiding yourself to see manatees in Crystal River (or to check your guide), we developed this free mobile app to help you out. It is for use on a GPS enabled mobile device. It will show you where to go, how to spot and what to do when you see a manatee. It is free of advertising and emphasizes passive observation.

I went to Crystal River as a kid. It’s beautiful! Great post!

I grew up in Florida but have never done this! I’m going for the first time in a few days and I cannot wait.

What we are interested in is a guided kayak tour to, possibly, see manatees on the Crystal River. Seeing all the other flora and fauna sounds great also. But, my bucket list includes seeing a manatee, up close, in a natural environment. Is a guided kayak tour something I could arrange through Wander Lusters? Please let me know if this is possible and the cost of this adventure. BTW I have never been in a kayak though my husband has kayaked on a small lake. Thanks

Thank you for getting in touch. I can offer a full trip planning service however I do not book single tours. If you already have your accommodation and itinerary organized I can highly recommend going direct to Hunter Springs Kayaks – http://www.hunterspringskayak.com/ – I booked a three-hour guided kayaking tour with the team at Hunter Springs during my own visit to Crystal River and highly recommend their chilled-out, eco-friendly approach.

Safe travels, Charli

Where are the Best Places to See the Manatees in Florida?

In case you haven’t guessed yet, it’s Crystal River! This incredible place is known as the manatee capital of the world for a reason.

It’s also the only location in the United States where you can legally swim with manatees.

And for a truly one-of-a-kind experience, we also offer private manatee tours in Crystal River !

Where is Crystal River, Florida?

Tucked away on Florida’s enchanting Gulf Coast, Crystal River is a hidden gem waiting to be explored.

This small coastal city in Citrus County is located around 80 miles northwest of Orlando, making it the perfect day trip or weekend getaway for those seeking a unique adventure.

Getting out to Crystal River is a breeze with Real Florida Adventures. We provide roundtrip transportation in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle from International Drive, Disney, and Kissimmee.

What Makes the Crystal River Habitat So Special?

Crystal River isn’t just a destination; it’s an aquatic ecosystem teeming with life and beauty.

The city itself sits on Kings Bay. Crystal River, the river the city shares its name with, links the inland Kings Bay with the coastal Crystal Bay and the Gulf of Mexico beyond.

This creates the Crystal River/Kings Bay system, one of Florida’s most complex and unique natural resources.

The Crystal River Springs group, a remarkable network of more than 30 springs, is the system’s water source. On average, these springs discharge over 975 cubic feet of fresh water per second into King’s Bay.

And the water discharged is warm, with a steady temperature of around 72°F to 74°F (around 23 °C).

When temperatures out in the Gulf of Mexico drop in the winter, this warm water attracts hundreds of West Indian manatees.

While the winter manatee population is typically around 500 to 1,000, up to 100 manatees live here through the warmer summer months too, so they are a year-round presence.

This spring system is vital to the survival of manatees. In fact, The Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge is the only such refuge in the US dedicated to the protection and preservation of one species.

Read our tips for snorkelling with manatees in Crystal River, Florida for even more pre-adventure advice!

Let Us Introduce You to Crystal River’s Manatees

Get to know your adorable hosts! From their round bodies to their curious communication, manatees are sure to steal your heart.

Belonging to the group of mammals known as Sirenia, or sea cows, the West Indian manatee is herbivorous, feeding primarily on seagrass.

West Indian manatees are divided into two subspecies:

  • The Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris)
  • The Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus)

Our manatee snorkelling tours at Crystal River are as much about education as they are about adventure, so you’ll learn plenty about these incredible animals on the day of your tour.

But as an introduction, some of our favourite manatee facts include:

  • West Indian manatees can weigh as much as 1,200 pounds (544 kg)
  • These animals can spend around 10 to 12 hours sleeping every day
  • Manatees consume up to 15% of their body weight in seagrass and other vegetation
  • The average swimming speed of a manatee is between three and five miles per hour
  • Manatees can hold their breath for 20 minutes, but they tend to surface much more often
  • Manatees migrate to warm water because exposure to temperatures than 68°F can kill them

When you visit Crystal River with RFA, you can witness firsthand how manatees communicate and interact with each other, including the clicks, chirps, and whistles that make up their unique language.

The Dos and Don'ts When Snorkeling with Manatees at Crystal River

Respect is the name of the game when it comes to snorkelling with manatees! Before you take the plunge, we’ll share tips on how to approach these incredible creatures while ensuring their safety and comfort.

But there’s one golden rule you must know above all others: “Look, but don’t touch.”

Not only are the manatees at Crystal River wild animals, but they’re also listed as “vulnerable to extinction.”

So, please admire these majestic creatures from a respectful distance. And don’t feed them any of your human food, they’re perfectly happy and healthy with their seagrass!

Manatees also appreciate a calm and peaceful environment, so you should also keep noise to a minimum.

Keep in mind that you’re a guest in the manatees’ habitat and you won’t go wrong!

Captain Ron and guide Michelle were fantastic. The small group we had offered great interaction with manatees. I was even given a nuzzle by a curious one. Hot coffee getting out of water was a great touch as well.

Thanks to captain Ron and manatee guide Michelle for an awesome once-in-a-lifetime experience! It was truly a wonderful experience. My teenage kids were even amazed at the number of manatees we were able to see and literally play with. A trip we will never forget!!

My friend and I toured with Lauren and Audrey and it was amazing. Our guides were very knowledgeable of the manatees and where to find them and they were funny too. This was an amazing experience. We would definitely do it again.

Once in a lifetime experience. Super cool knowledgable guides, and captain. This is not a cattle boat tour, it’s a small group and they take you to places that other groups don’t go so you aren’t in the water with swarms of people. Highly recommend!

Captain Ron and the whole crew were terrific. Fun, knowledgeable staff that are passionate about what they do and the manatees and their environment. Highly recommend!
