Immerse yourself in Boston’s historic sites and exciting culinary scene. Ride the vintage cable cars in San Francisco and explore the dazzling colors of Seattle’s Pike Place Market.

Cruises to the United States take you to the heart of these iconic cities, as well as exploring some of the country’s most beautiful coastlines, from the icy peaks and forested inlets of Alaska to the lush landscapes of New England. The list of adventures in store is endless, from hiking, cycling, and kayaking to whale-watching, designer shopping, fine dining, and a rich, diverse culture. All this is yours, from the premium setting of one of our award-winning, contemporary ships.

USA Cruise Highlights

Cosmopolitan cities.

The USA can rightly claim to have some of the most exciting cities in the world. In Boston, the Freedom Trail is a fascinating history lesson. Check out Pier 39 in San Francisco, and take a trip to Alcatraz. Discover Hemingway’s legacy in laid-back Key West, find your inner rock star in Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture, or explore the interesting mix of cultures in New Orleans.

Spectacular Nature

Wherever you sail in the USA, you’ll be captivated by the extraordinary beauty of the landscapes. Hawaii is a lush paradise of rainforest, volcanic peaks, and tumbling waterfalls, while Alaska is wild and untamed, a world of snowy mountains, glaciers, and old-growth forest. Sail the coast of New England in fall and take in the dazzling shades of scarlet and orange on the trees. Or head south to Key West for a setting of coconut palms, sandy beaches, and colorful coral reefs.

Exciting Cuisine

Whether you want to taste award-winning vintages in Napa Valley, feast on lobster rolls in New England, or sample gumbo in New Orleans, you’ll discover an incredibly varied culinary scene on your travels around the USA. Don’t miss a salmon bake or the chance to try reindeer sausages in Alaska. In San Francisco, head for Chinatown for tasty dim sum. Key West is famed for its tangy Key lime pie, while Seattle’s claim to fame is artisan-roast coffee—and those powerful Washington State wines.

United States Cruise Regions

The wild frontier of Alaska has some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in the USA, where you’ll find mile upon mile of jagged, snow-capped mountains and dense forest. On a cruise, you’ll be able to appreciate this wild beauty from both a land and sea perspective. You’ll see glaciers, rocky shorelines, historic gold rush towns, and flower-strewn mountain meadows. Along the way, you can hike, kayak, spot bears, go whale-watching, and feast on fresh salmon.

New England

New England has it all: cosmopolitan cities like Boston, arty seaside towns, windswept coasts, and verdant national parks. Follow the Freedom Trail in Boston, and explore Portland’s seafaring history under Maine’s vast skies. Time your trip for the fall and admire the fiery colors of the foliage. Everywhere you go, there’s delicious seafood to taste, like lobster rolls, or claws dripping in melted butter.

Visit some of the most exciting cities on the Pacific Coast with Celebrity. See the graceful sweep of the Golden Gate Bridge in hilly San Francisco, and ride the historic cable cars. Whizz up the Space Needle in Seattle and take in the colors and buzz of Pike Place Market. In Los Angeles, browse the designer shops on Rodeo Drive and marvel at the stars’ homes. Catalina Island, meanwhile, is another world of rugged coastlines, diverse marine life, and hiking trails with sweeping views.

Indulge in a relaxing journey across the warm Pacific from Vancouver to the lush, volcanic islands of Hawaii, where waterfalls tumble from verdant peaks and the ocean is home to abundant whales and dolphins. Visit Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls from Hilo, and admire the fiery antics of Mount Kilauea. Learn about history in Honolulu, the location of the only royal palace in the USA, and Pearl Harbor.

Admire the colorful Art Deco architecture of Miami’s South Beach, and taste Cuban cuisine in Little Havana. Browse the shops along Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, and explore the canals by gondola. Walk along the famous Duval Street in Key West and explore Hemingway’s former haunts. Treat your kids to a day in the theme parks around Orlando—and meet astronauts at the Kennedy Space Center. Make time to visit those glorious beaches, too.

Everything you need to know about river cruises in the U.S.

A complete guide to u.s. river cruises and cruise lines..

Megan duBois

When you think of river cruises, you’re probably imagining the enormously popular river cruises in Europe . But there are U.S. river cruises too, and they’re just as spectacular as their overseas counterparts. From making your way down the mighty Mississippi River to gliding past the cute seaside villages of New England , there are river cruises in U.S. to meet every interest and budget.

On U.S. river cruises, the ships tend to be smaller and more intimate than traditional ocean liners. These smaller ships are designed to better navigate the country’s narrow rivers, and they come in a variety of styles. On some American river cruises, the ships are the iconic southern paddlewheel boats outfitted with luxury in mind. Others are modern riverboats that look more like miniature ocean liners similar to what you’ll find in Europe.

PACK YOUR BAGS: 11 guided tour companies that offer trips around the world

What’s included on a river cruise in the United States?

American Symphony river cruise ship (Photo American Cruise Lines)

With U.S. river cruises, most things are included in a single price. Your stateroom, meals, activities, onboard entertainment, and some excursions are all part of the package. Depending on the river cruise line or destination, a pre-cruise hotel stay may also be included. Sometimes, river cruise lines operating in the United States will also offer free one-way airfare promotions, so if you have the flexibility to wait for a deal, you can probably find one.

FAMILY CRUISES: Kids sail free: These cruise lines let kids cruise free

If pre-cruise hotel stays aren’t bundled into the up-front cost, some river cruise lines will offer it as an add-on cost. As with any cruise, it’s always a good idea to arrive a day before your embarkation so that you don’t miss the boat.

What is the target audience for U.S. river cruises?

While the primary audience for river cruises in the U.S. is older travelers who are retired or semi-retired, American river cruises are becoming increasingly popular with younger couples, families, and multigenerational groups.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY: How to save money on a carnival cruise (with or without kids)

Younger couples often find that the activities available away from ship are exciting and not typically something that can be booked except through the river cruise line. Families traveling on a multigenerational vacation are drawn to river cruising because there’s something for every age group , from family bike rides to lounging on the sun deck. And since there are no passports or international travel to navigate, U.S. cruises are easier from the get-go.

How many passengers are typically on river cruises in the United States?

While the numbers can vary greatly depending on both the U.S. river cruise line and the destination, typical river cruises in the U.S. can have anywhere from 100 to 400 guests. Most are in the 150 to 200 range. That’s small enough to feel friendly and big enough that you get the chance to meet new people every day.

Can I book direct or should I go through a travel agent?

Your choice entirely, since either is a good choice. Cruise lines have specialists you can call to book, and if you plan on bundling airfare in with your cruise, this is an easy and direct way to book. Booking directly with the cruise line also means if you have a special request or want to make a change you can just call them to arrange it, instead of calling your travel agent who then calls the line.

If you’re more comfortable with a travel agent, and want someone who will be able to help you narrow down choices and offer professional advice, plus be on call in case you have issues along the way, the travel agent route will probably be the right fit for you.

What are the best best river cruises in the USA?

Currently, three cruise lines offer river cruises in the United States: American Cruise Lines , American Queen Voyages , and Viking River Cruises . Here’s what you need to know about each of these U.S. river cruise companies to help you choose the best fit for your cruise vacation.

1. American Cruise Lines

American Pride river cruise ship (Photo: American Cruise Lines)

You can choose from seven different U.S. river cruise destinations with American Cruise Lines , and each river cruise makes multiple stops up and down the route to visit cities and towns along the way. American Cruise Lines’ fleet off 15 ships range from modern riverboats to remodeled paddle wheelers to small ships for coastal cruise. With daily entertainment that include musicians, historians, and naturalists, there’s always something to do onboard.

KEEP KIDS HAPPY: 7 best cruise lines for families (and their most kid-friendly ships)

American Cruise Lines offers U.S. river cruises all around the country, including the Mississippi River , New England , Southeast , Puget Sound , Alaska , California , and the Columbia and Snake Rivers . Voyages range in length from four nights to two weeks, and you can expect to pay between $2,000 and $10,000 per person depending on the length and destination of your river cruise. Most staterooms on American Cruise Lines ships have a balcony with unobstructed views.

American river cruises with American Cruise Line are all-inclusive. Dining, entertainment, Wi-Fi, and many shore excursions are built into the package price. Beer and wine are complimentary at lunch and dinner, as are evening cocktails. All river cruises (and some coastal itineraries) include a pre-cruise hotel stay. Flat-rate domestic airfare is also offered for every cruise.

2. American Queen Voyages

Known for its luxury paddlewheel ships that glide along the Lower Mississippi River , Upper Mississippi and Illinois River , Ohio and Mississippi Rivers , Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers , and Colombia and Snake Rivers , American Queen Voyages (also sometimes known as American Queen Steamboat Company) has a reputation for being as comfortable as as it is upscale. Each of its four river cruise ships is unique, so picking the right vessel is as crucial as picking the right cruise itinerary:

  • American Queen is the largest steamboat ever built and feels like a blast from the past.
  • American Countess features a more contemporary design and spacious top-floor sun deck.
  • American Duchess is known for its two-story loft suites.
  • American Empress boasts a large collection of artifacts and artwork from Alaska, Russia, and the Gold Rush era, and is a good fit for history buffs.

With prices starting as low as $999 per person for a nine-day itinerary, American Queen Voyages’s river cruises in the U.S. are more conducive to budget-friendly vacations than some competing river cruise lines. Its rates cover a one-night pre-cruise hotel stay, unlimited guided tours, unlimited drinks including alcohol, dining, Wi-Fi, onboard entertainment, bike rentals, and hiking sticks. American Queen Voyages sometimes runs free airfare promotions for select cruises.

3. Viking River Cruises

Recognized worldwide for its overseas river cruises, Viking ‘s river cruises in the U.S. focus on the Mississippi River and its many ports of call. Currently Viking River Cruises sails five different itineraries along the Mississippi , including a festive holiday season river cruise from Memphis to New Orleans. This is a super fun domestic alternative to European Christmas market cruises, and they cost a lot less.

OCEAN VOYAGES: What it’s like to sail on the Disney Wish

The aptly named Viking Mississippi is an upscale modern river cruise ship that can host up to 386 guests in 193 outside-facing staterooms. Even the ship’s smallest staterooms clock in at a comfortable 268 square feet, including a private verandah.

Each of Viking’s Mississippi river cruises include one complimentary shore excursion in every port. Wi-Fi, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and enrichment activities are also included. Viking’s U.S. river cruises start at $3,999 per person.

Could close-to-home U.S. cruises satisfy that out-to-sea itch? An ever-growing group of voyagers emphatically say yes. The memories of the challenges European cruisers faced last year surely contribute to U.S. cruises’ popularity boost. Besides, it’s so much easier (and far less costly) to find ports to drive to, or only require a short flight. Most American cruises possess the added allure of international flair, visiting the Caribbean, Mexico, and Canada . Nearby waters deliver breathtaking natural beauty, adventurous shore excursions, and ship vibes that range from nonstop high-energy to pampering luxury. Here, several upcoming voyages sailing from American ports that rival any cruise in far-flung locales.

Booking tips for U.S. cruises

Where can you cruise in the united states.

American-flagged carriers like UnCruise Adventures offer Alaska, Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii cruises. American Cruise Lines counts the coastal Southeast, Alaska, Puget Sound, and New England among its itineraries. NLC America, a Norwegian Cruise Lines division, features the American-flagged  Pride of America sailing the Hawaiian islands. Lindblad Expeditions’ National Geographic cruise line possesses four American-flagged ships that cruise Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.

Are there any cruises that stay in the United States?

Only American-flagged cruise lines can sail solely in the United States. Most popular cruise companies sailing multiple ships are foreign-flagged and must abide by laws requiring at least one foreign port stop. That’s why so many close-to-home cruises include Canada, the Caribbean, or Mexico. American-flagged cruise lines that can sail solely in U.S. waters include American Cruise Lines, UnCruise Adventures, and Lindblad Expeditions.

What is the most popular cruise line in America?

Families love Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean International for an abundance of amenities befitting multi-generations. Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, and Carnival Cruises are extremely popular for U.S. cruises , too.

How much does a cruise cost in the United States?

Prices vary widely depending upon the ship category. Contemporary lines are the most economical, premium fall in the middle, and luxury cruises are the priciest. You can find weeklong cruises that cost under $100 per person per day—talk about a deal.

The 7 best U.S. cruises 2023

Celebrity cruises: an inaugural voyage through the eastern caribbean.

The fourth ship in this line’s game-changing Edge series, the 3,260-passenger  Celebrity Ascent  makes its inaugural eight-day sail round trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in December 2023. This sunshine-blanketed itinerary promises four charming Caribbean ports including Philipsburg, St. Maarten, and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, and three blissful sea days. You’ll want those onboard days to never end, with the ship providing so much outdoor space to soak up the balmy Caribbean sun and soft ocean breezes. A buzzy casino and 32 eateries, bars, and lounges are big-time lures, too. Shore excursions—chilling on powdery white sand beaches, snorkeling turquoise waters teeming with colorful coral and tropical fish, and sipping champagne on catamaran sunset sails—are mesmerizing.

What better way to cruise in the U.S. than to celebrate July 4 th in Boston, sailing 2,691-passenger Cunard flagship  Queen Mary 2 round trip New York? How fitting to walk the historic Freedom Trail and tour the Boston Tea Party ship on this holiday. The eight-day voyage also includes stops in Newport, Rhode Island (be sure to ogle those Gilded Age mansions), and Halifax, Canada, where passengers can stroll breathtaking public gardens and take an emotional moment to behold the single Titanic deck chair at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.  Queen Mary 2 , widely hailed for its transatlantic crossings, is a wonderful ship to call home. On board, elegance prevails, with a formal evening dress code reflecting Cunard’s sense of occasion. Afternoon tea, a humongous library, ballroom dancing, and a planetarium are among numerous onboard activities keeping passengers engaged. If in the budget, book a Princess Grill Suite; less costly than the Queens Grill, it’s still awash in extra amenities (such as an exclusive private restaurant) and especially attentive service.

Other port activities include ziplining, golfing, and sampling agave-based spirits. Onboard the ship, there are blues and rock-and-roll clubs that come alive at nightfall. Count on varied dining choices: New York-style pizzas, oysters on the half-shell, or juicy prime steaks, anyone?

Norwegian Cruise Line: Explore Belize, Mexico, and Honduras

Some of the most popular ports for American cruises are in Florida. How simple to sail round trip from Miami for seven days on the 3,804-passenger  Norwegian Joy  and kick up the adrenaline in three Central American countries: Mexico, Honduras, and Belize. In Roatán, Honduras, embark on an eco-adventure, interacting with capuchin monkeys and sloths, and bouncing on an all-terrain buggy through an impossibly lush jungle. Costa Maya, Mexico, lures ocean-lovers with snorkeling in the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest reef in the world, teeming with marine life. Or, maybe your passion lies in exploring Tulum’s Mayan ruins. Parasail or zipline in Harvest Caye, Belize—Norwegian’s 75-acre resort-style island in southern Belize. Onboard the recently remodeled ship, indulge in 15 dining venues including specialty restaurants like Cagney’s Steakhouse and three main dining rooms, party at nightclubs, try driving a race car on a two-level track or seek Lady Luck at the casino, revel in Broadway and Vegas-style shows. Feeling brave? Swirl down a double-loop waterslide over the ship’s side. Royal Princess Leaving Southampton 9th June 2013

Royal Princess ' sailing along the California coast is one of the best U.S. cruises.

In Santa Barbara, a notable curated outing promises a delicious meal at a leading local restaurant and a visit to a family-owned farm and “ground to glass” winery. Live it up at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, or admire the stunning art collection and striking modern architecture at Getty Center museum. The San Diego Zoo is a must, as is desert ziplining in Baja—although driving an ATV through Guadalupe Valley’s wine country is pretty darn cool, too.

More Aleutian explorations lead to jaw-droppers like pristine glaciers, fossilized forests, hot springs, and waterfalls, and wildlife sightings such as bald eagles, orcas, and blue foxes.

Viking: Canada and the Atlantic coastline

This voyage features many inclusions, such as an enthusiastic expedition team, one complimentary landing or shore excursion in each port, and outings by kayak, rubberized small boats, and Special Operation Boats (12-seaters that leave the ship via a protected marina and can convert from open seating to enclosed cabin). As on other Viking ocean liners, 24-hour room service, king beds, spacious baths with heated bathroom floors, complimentary wine and beer with meals, and specialty restaurant dining also rank high among included amenities. Ashore, you’ll find a mix of fascinating cities (like Quebec City and New York City) and spectacular scenery. Bike about Toronto, hike Canada’s La Mauricie National Park, kayak or bird-watch in Charleston. And who knew there were more than 300 resident Atlantic bottlenose dolphins in the inlets, creeks and marsh flats around Charleston? Chances are, sightings will enchant on a guided tour.

The 16 Best Cruises to Book in 2023, According to T+L's Expert

Travel + Leisure hand-selected 16 different types of on-the-water adventures to consider in the year ahead.

Paul Brady is the news director at Travel + Leisure and the brand's expert on cruise travel. He has been covering the travel industry for more than 15 years for outlets including Condé Nast Traveler , Skift , and The Huffington Post .

Cruising is in the midst of an epic comeback . Travelers are turning to trusted lines to help minimize the hassles of country hopping and maximize relaxation time in each destination. With 2023 poised to be a big year for both new and frequent cruisers — thanks in part to an abundance of new ships and itineraries — Travel + Leisure has hand-selected 16 different types of adventures to consider in the year ahead.

The Nile on Viking Osiris

Alastair Miller/Courtesy of Viking

Viking Osiris is the line’s newest on the Nile, with just 41 suites and staterooms, a pool deck, and cool Scandinavian design. The ship sails between Aswan and Luxor, with pre- and post-sail touring in Cairo included with the 12-day itineraries.

Alaska on Ocean Victory

The Alaska trips on Ocean Victory , a fuel-efficient, 93-cabin ship from American Queen Voyages, come with the opportunity to kayak past glaciers and spot bald eagles and grizzlies. The vessel, which first debuted in 2021, represents an evolution in ship design for American Queen, with its cutting-edge X-Bow design (which helps reduce fuel burn) and chic suites, including many with private verandas.

The Galápagos Islands on Quasar Expeditions’ Evolution

In June, Quasar Expeditions is offering a Galápagos cruise on the 32-passenger Evolution for children with autism spectrum disorder, hosted by an expert in supporting families with special needs. The trip, which departs June 24, is a seven-night expedition that takes in many of the most notable sites on the islands, with programming specially tailored for both kids and adults.

Cruising Antarctica on Silver Cloud or Silver Endeavour

Adrian Wolodarczyk/Courtesy of Silversea

Silversea gives Antarctica travelers the option to skip two days of sailing the often-rocky Drake Passage. Instead, they can fly in comfort over the waters separating South America from the continent, then hop aboard the 127-suite Silver Cloud and 100-suite Silver Endeavour for trips along the frosty coastline.

The Caribbean, South Pacific, and Australia With Windstar Cruises

Windstar has a series of 2023 itineraries on the 156-cabin Star Pride and 171-suite Wind Surf that hit yachty Caribbean ports like Jost Van Dyke, in the British Virgin Islands, and Anguilla. The small-ship line, which is known for both its sleek “Star Plus Class” ships and its classic vessels with their dramatic sails, also has an array of itineraries along the coast of Australia and in the South Pacific.

Cold-weather Cruises on Le Commandant Charcot

A game changer in lowering emissions, Ponant’s brand-new hybrid-electric Le Commandant Charcot can operate on less-carbon-intensive battery power and liquefied natural gas and has room for 245 guests. The game-changing ship, which has already hosted eclipse watchers on a trip to Antarctica and sailed to the geographic North Pole, also offers adventures in places such as Iceland and Svalbard.

Cruises Closer to Home With American Queen Voyages

Michel Verdure/Courtesy of American Queen Voyages

American Queen Voyages will offer the longest trips in the line’s history in 2023, with two 23-day river itineraries on the Mississippi and Ohio aboard the 123-stateroom American Countess . “The ship will sail more than 1,700 miles from Minnesota down the Ohio River and Upper Mississippi River , calling on more ports and offering more guided tours than ever before,” as T+L reported in August .

The South Pacific on Paul Gauguin

Just refurbished, the 165-cabin Paul Gauguin will be exploring the Pacific in 2023, with trips to the Cook Islands, Fiji, the Marquesas, and the Society Islands. The single-vessel brand was voted the very best small-ship cruise line in the World’s Best Awards 2022 , as T+L readers gave particularly high marks to the Paul Gauguin ’s on-board staff.

Mystery Cruising With Uniworld

Courtesy of Uniworld

Next year, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises will offer two nine-night “mystery cruises ,” with the European destinations revealed only as guests depart: similar trips in 2022 sold out. Travelers on the June 2023 trip will meet in Amsterdam, while the July 2023 sailing rendezvous in Nice, France — from there, the itinerary is anybody’s guess.

Expedition Cruising With Seabourn

Courtesy of Seabourn

Seabourn Venture , the luxury line’s first 132-suite expedition ship, launched in late summer with itineraries in northern Europe; trips in Japan, the South Pacific, and Antarctica are on tap for 2023. Seabourn Pursuit , which will be a sibling ship to Venture, is scheduled to arrive in 2023, the second in Seabourn’s growing expedition fleet.

Seeing Europe’s Gems by Small Ship

Slated to launch in the spring, the 228-passenger Scenic Eclipse II will visit ports from Dublin to Lisbon, as well as both polar regions, in 2023 and 2024. The innovative vessel, which is similar in design to Scenic Eclipse , will have luxurious suites complete with butler service and all sorts of extras, including helicopters (plural) and a submarine.

Visiting Wild Places With Fewer Impacts

Aurora Expeditions, whose newest vessel is the 71-cabin Sylvia Earle , guarantees that all operations are carbon neutral, pledging to offset all emissions. The newly launched ship, with its fuel-saving X-Bow design, doesn’t skimp on expedition necessities: guests on Antarctica expeditions can explore by Zodiac or snowshoe and even, when conditions allow, go scuba diving in polar waters or camping on the ice.

Solo Cruising With a New Line

Upstart cruise line Atlas Ocean Voyages offers all-inclusive fares on its two 98-suite vessels, and, in a departure from industry norms, the brand doesn’t charge solo travelers a single supplement. The line’s second ship, World Traveller , launched in November 2022 . It will sail nine-, 10-, 11-, and 12-night round-trips from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Antarctica through March 2023 before heading to the Mediterranean to hit Spain, France, and Portugal.

The Galápagos Islands on Celebrity Flora

Michel Verdure/Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Another ship that sails the Galápagos, the Celebrity Flora , has 50 suites, many with large verandas, plus a stargazing deck and a fleet of comfortable tenders. Two itineraries are available, the first of which is a seven-night “northern loop” that visits the volcanic island of Santiago and has guests spotting red-footed Boobies on Genovesa Island, a place sometimes called Bird Island thanks to its famed animals. The line’s “outer loop” also includes plenty of wildlife watching, plus a stop at the less-frequented Daphne Island.

Doing Wine Country on Seadream II

SeaDream Yacht Club has two Wine Voyages in 2023, which include vineyard visits in Greece, Italy, and Spain and a winemaker-hosted dinner on the 112-guest Seadream II . The highly regarded intimate-ship line wins frequent accolades from T+L readers for its on-board service and well-appointed vessels.

7 best US river cruises

Donna Heiderstadt

Whether you're fascinated by American history, culture and cuisine, or you've enjoyed river cruising in Europe but are now looking to explore closer to home, U.S. river cruises are an easy and enjoyable vacation option.

Choose from two main waterways for your U.S. river cruise: the Mississippi River — which flows through nine states from St. Paul, Minnesota, to New Orleans — or the Columbia and Snake rivers in Oregon and Washington. Some cruise lines also venture onto three smaller, lesser-known rivers: the Ohio, the Cumberland and the Tennessee. You can also explore New York's Hudson River on a fall foliage cruise.

Your choice of cruise line is equally limited. Just two companies offer multiple itineraries on U.S. rivers. American Cruise Line sails all the waterways mentioned above, while Viking offers itineraries solely on the Mississippi. Additionally, Lindblad Expeditions has introduced a food-and-wine-centric river cruise on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Read on for our picks of the seven best U.S. river cruises. They range from seven to 15 nights and visit destinations in 16 states; itineraries take you through the colonial-heritage-rich Northeast, America's agricultural heartland and the pioneer routes of the Pacific Northwest.

American Cruise Lines' 8-night Music Cities Cruise

cruises in the usa 2023

From Memphis blues and Elvis Presley's "Blue Suede Shoes" to Kentucky bluegrass and New Orleans jazz, American Cruise Lines' eight-night Music Cities Cruise sails you through a chronology of the U.S. music scene. You'll traverse three rivers (the Mississippi, Ohio and Cumberland) en route from Memphis to Nashville, or vice versa.

In Tennessee's two famous music cities, you'll have a chance to visit Elvis Presley's Graceland, stroll blues club-lined Beale Street and check out the Grand Ole Opry. You'll also visit Paducah, Kentucky, and Dover and Clarksville in Tennessee, where experiences include whiskey and bourbon tasting, tours of landmark art murals and, of course, Civil War history.

While cruising, you'll enjoy nightly entertainment that celebrates the region's musical heritage. American Cruise Lines offers this itinerary on four ships from April to October 2024, 2025 and 2026. Three of the ships — American Melody, American Symphony and American Serenade — are 180-passenger modern river ships launched in 2021, 2022 and 2023, respectively. The fourth, American Splendor, is a 180-passenger paddlewheeler that debuted in 2016.

Viking's 14-night America's Great River Cruise

cruises in the usa 2023

Want the total Mississippi experience? You can cruise the entire length of this mighty river as you visit 14 cities in seven U.S. states on Viking's two-week sailing.

Available three times a year (in July, September and October), the America's Great River cruise begins in Minnesota (either St. Paul or Red Wing) and concludes in New Orleans, allowing you to experience an intricate tapestry of American history and culture.

There's eagle spotting in Red Wing and agricultural innovation in Quad Cities, Iowa. You'll enjoy Mark Twain lore in Hannibal, Missouri, and architectural landmarks, such as the soaring Gateway Arch, in St. Louis. As you cruise the lower Mississippi, you'll delve into civil rights history in Memphis; Civil War battles and historic architecture in Mississippi's Vicksburg and Natchez; Cajun and Creole music in Baton Rouge; and the legendary culinary treats and jazz of New Orleans.

All sailings are aboard the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Launched in 2022, it's currently the largest river ship in the U.S. and features three restaurants and an aft infinity pool.

American Cruise Lines' 8-Night Columbia & Snake River Cruise

cruises in the usa 2023

If your vacation preferences favor mountain landscapes, wine tasting and pioneer lore, consider American Cruise Lines' eight-night Columbia & Snake River Cruise . You'll explore the Pacific Northwest from Portland, Oregon, to Clarkstown, Washington (or vice versa).

On the Pacific end of your voyage, you'll visit Astoria, Oregon — the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. This coastal city at the mouth of the Columbia River is known for its Victorian homes, wineries, brew pubs, and Lewis and Clark heritage. Next, from Kalama, Washington, you can join an excursion to visit the remnants of the area around Mount St. Helens, which suffered a devastating eruption in 1980.

In The Dalles, you can enjoy a sommelier-led tasting of Columbia Valley wines, visit Multnomah Falls or get adventurous on a river kayak tour. During a call on Richland, Washington, you can admire the scenic beauty around the confluence of the Columbia and Snake rivers at Sacajawea State Park. More wine tasting or outdoor adventure awaits on the way to Clarkstown.

American Cruise Line offers this itinerary on five ships from April to October 2024, 2025 and 2026. Three of the ships (American Song, American Jazz and American Harmony) are 180-passenger modern river ships launched from 2018 to 2020. American Pride is a 150-passenger paddlewheeler launched in 2012, and American West is a 110-passenger veteran paddlewheeler launched in 1995.

Viking's 7-night New Orleans & Southern Charms

cruises in the usa 2023

They offer time before or after the cruise to enjoy the city's food, music and iconic architecture — plus the ease of a round-trip flight booking. Viking's seven-night New Orleans & Southern Charms itinerary focuses solely on ports in Louisiana and Mississippi, with an emphasis on historic architecture, Cajun culture and Civil War landmarks.

From Darrow, Louisiana, you'll stroll beneath canopies of towering live oak trees to visit historic mansions or glide through the bayou. More historic architecture, along with bird-watching, awaits in St. Francisville, Louisiana, and Natchez, Mississippi. Vicksburg, Mississippi, is home to one of the Civil War's most famous battlefields. Baton Rouge, Louisiana's capital, has something to satisfy every interest, from Cajun cuisine to tours of the restored World War II-era USS Kidd.

The cruise, which is available in November and December 2024 and January, November and December 2025, ends with a full day of exploration back in New Orleans before one last night aboard the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi.

American Cruise Lines' 7-night Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise

cruises in the usa 2023

Not only is the autumnal landscape in New York's Hudson Valley visually captivating, but the small cities and towns that line the river's shores are filled with fascinating early American history dating back more than 400 years.

Cruise the Hudson round-trip from New York City on American Cruise Lines' seven-night Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise . You'll visit Catskill, home to the Hudson River School Art Trail and the Olana Historic Site, or explore more actively at the Hudson River Skywalk and Kaaterskill Falls. In Albany, founded in 1609, you can tour the newly renovated New York State Capitol building, built in the late 1800s; you can also visit the New York State Museum, which dates to 1836. Feel like apple-picking? That's an option here, too.

Next, during a call at Kingston/Hyde Park, you can tour the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, home to the 32nd U.S. president's library and museum. You can also head to the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site, featuring an American Beaux-Arts mansion completed in 1899. The United States Military Academy at West Point, founded in 1802, is also on the itinerary, as is Sleepy Hollow. The Sleepy Hollow legend comes to life during a tour of the local cemetery where author Washington Irving is buried. Back in the Big Apple on day seven, you'll have time to explore before saying farewell to your ship.

Sailings are available from late September to early November 2024, 2025 and 2026. Sailings are onboard either the 100-passenger American Eagle, American Liberty, American Glory or American Legend (all built in 2023 or 2024), or the older 90-passenger American Star and American Independence, launched in 2007 and 2010, respectively.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE 2024-26 GUIDE

When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. First of all, they’re completely stress-free. On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the  destinations  you sail to and the  shore excursions  available at each port, to a full range of  entertainment  and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your  experience  even more all-inclusive, you can opt for  beverage  and  specialty dining  packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.

From Florida to Maine and beyond, a U.S. Atlantic Coast cruise is going to give you a great opportunity to discover America. On this cruise you can visit bustling cities like Miami and Boston, where there are unending attractions such as South Beach and the Freedom Trail. You’ll also make stops in smaller ports like Newport, Rhode Island – a cozy town on the water that was home to some of the U.S.’s most wealthy – and Bar Harbor, Maine – a quiet port with stunning scenery and home to Acadia National Park. These cruises may also go into Canada to visit idyllic towns with lots of greenery and lighthouses.

US Atlantic Coast Breakers Mansion of Newport, Rhode Island

  • See the opulent Breakers, a mansion owned by the Vanderbilt family, when you visit Newport Rhode Island. This decadent summer “cottage” was the epitome of the American Dream at the turn of the century.
  • Roll up your pants and check out the beautiful sea glass at Sea Glass Beach in Hamilton, Bermuda. These colorful gems make for amazing photos and perfect souvenirs.

US Atlantic Coast Broadway in New York City

  • Spend an evening at a Sugar Shack. This is a house in Quebec where the sap from the maple trees is transformed into syrup. Here you’ll get a great meal and be entertained by local musicians
  • Experience all the razzle dazzle of Broadway when you visit New York City. You can catch a performance of a crowd-pleasing musical or go deep with a Tony-winning play.

US Atlantic Coast Beach chairs along South Beach, Miami

  • Lay out in the sun on Miami’s South Beach. This shoreline spot is a major draw for international visitors.
  • Think you’re pretty smart? Well then you should go to Harvard. Take a tour of America’s oldest college when you visit Boston.

Seven winter sun cruises beyond the Canary Islands and Caribbean

Beyond the obvious winter sun magnets you'll find voyages that weave in wildlife, snorkelling, antiquities and more.

Nile cruises sail past Egypt's incredible antiquities (Photo: Discover Egypt)

As the nights draw in and winter looms, it is not surprising that many of us are starting to plot an escape to somewhere warmer.

The secret biannual cruise bargain, with winter sun voyages from £62 per day

The secret biannual cruise bargain, with winter sun voyages from £62 per day

The Caribbean and the Canary Islands are the stalwarts of the winter sun cruise scene, but there are plenty of alternatives where balmy temperatures and long, sunny days promise the perfect antidote to chillier conditions back at home.

According to cruise industry trade association Clia, a record number of UK travellers went on a winter cruise in the 2023–2024 season, growing by almost 150,000 compared to the previous year.

Independent specialist ROL Cruise reports growing interest for more adventurous destinations, including Asia, Africa and the Indian Ocean. Asia cruises had a 700 per cent spike in interest between June and August, for example, as Britons began to look ahead for a winter break .

Here are seven cruises away from the mainstream departing before spring…

Celestyal Cruises’s seven-night Desert Days voyage is tempting. The round-trip voyage from Qatar combines Dubai’s glitz with the grandeur of Abu Dhabi , contrasting with the mountain peaks and fjord-like inlets of Khasab in Oman, known as the Norway of Arabia. Dune-bashing safaris and desert dining under the stars add to the allure of this sailing on Celestyal Journey, which holds 1,260 passengers, making it one of the smallest mainstream ships.

Departures between 14 Dec and 22 Feb, from £489pp excluding flights. celestyal.com

Win a five-star European river cruise! We’ve teamed up with Riviera Travel to offer one lucky i reader the opportunity to win a fabulous five-star European river cruise. The lucky winner can select one river cruise from Riviera Travel’s exciting range of award-winning eight-day cruise itineraries travelling before October 31, 2025, and will be able to explore the best of Europe, whilst enjoying an included Superior drinks package. Relax and take your pick from a wide range of selected drinks, as you cruise down one of Europe’s scenic waterways. Enter here today!

This legendary waterway has long been a favourite among Britons drawn by the antiquities along its banks. Cruising through Upper Egypt lifts a veil on the rule of the pharaohs, with the grand temples of Luxor and mysterious secrets of the Valley of the Kings, where Tutankhamen’s tomb lies, acting as a foil to the lush beauty of Aswan. Of the many modern riverboats now cruising this river, one of the most atmospheric options is an intimate traditional-style sailboat, a dahabiya.

Discover Egypt offers one-week sailings between Aswan and Luxor in the 14-passenger Sonesta Amirat Dahabiya. Departs 9 November, from £3,397pp including flights. discoveregypt.co.uk

Beautiful Nile scenery with sailboat in the Nile on the way to The Front of the Abu Simbel Temple - Egypt, Africa

Cape Verde islands

Sometimes dubbed the African Caribbean, thanks to dazzling white-sand beaches and a mix of Portuguese and African cultures, Cape Verde is an enticing collection of 10 islands and numerous islets around 300 miles off the coast of Senegal. Explore them aboard Variety Cruises’ swish motor-cruiser Harmony V, which carries just 49 guests and weaves a path through the archipelago. You will visit the volcanic landscapes of Boa Vista and Fogo , the buzzing cultural hub of Mindelo on São Vicente and Cidade Velha, a city on Santiago dating to 1462.

The one-week round-trip cruise from the capital of Palmeira on Sal Island, departs on various dates, with a 5 March sailing from £2,265pp, flights extra. varietycruises.com

South Africa & the Indian Ocean

Leaving behind the British winter and stepping into the clear days of a South African summer is one of the major draws of a 13-night voyage with Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) from Cape Town to Port Louis, Mauritius. Another is the abundance of wildlife in the reserves of South Africa’s Eastern Cape, where safari drives bring close-up encounters with elephants and lions. It is a similar story in French-accented Madagascar , where natural attractions, include the beaches and wildlife of Antsiranana and Nosy Be, in the far north. Norwegian Sky carries all the main NCL features (including a theatre, a casino and six places to drink and dine), but with fewer than 2,000 passengers.

Departs 7 December, from £582pp excluding flights. ncl.com

Uniworld cruise on board the Ganges Voyager II from Kolkata to Kalna Image supplied by Caroline Calvert

Immerse yourself in India’s cultures while sailing on its most sacred river. A 12-night exploration with Uniworld gives an intriguing flavour of India’s famous Golden Triangle, where guests visit the Taj Mahal before boarding the Ganges Voyager II riverboat to cruise past Mughal forts and Sikh temples, while witnessing holy men and pilgrims cleansing themselves in the holy waters. This cruise takes in the heart of colonial India , starting in Kolkata, the former capital of the British Raj, and sailing to the “Temple City” of Kalna, the artisan village of Matiari, and colourful Mayapur, centre of the Hare Krishna movement.

Departs 15 March, from £6,479pp, including flights. uniworld.com

Thailand, Malaysia & Indonesia

Sail to some of Asia’s most paradisiacal islands on a 12-night cruise over the festive period. Beginning in Singapore, the itinerary includes the Thai favourite Phuket, with its Sino-Portuguese architecture, the white-sand beaches of Langkawi and Penang in Malaysia (where you will arrive on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, respectively), ever-popular Bali and its quieter alternative, Lombok. You will also have the chance to explore Malaysia’s atmospheric capital, Kuala Lumpur, where mosques and a mix of Buddhist, Hindu and Taoist temples vie for space alongside skyscrapers. The capital is a great place to indulge in street food, with Malay, Indian, Chinese, Arabic and Thai flavours drifting from stalls. Celebrity Millennium ( inset below ), carries around 2,200 passengers and has nine places to dine.

Departs 21 Dec, from £2,531pp, excluding flights. rolcruise.co.uk

Hong Kong to Cape Town

If you don’t have the time nor money to take one of the world voyages that traditionally sail into the southern hemisphere summer during our winter, why not dip in and do a shorter section? Many cruise companies split these long voyages into more manageable chunks to broaden their appeal. A 23-night Hong Kong to Cape Town voyage with Cunard is part of the maiden circumnavigation of its newest ship, Queen Anne. This section brings a flavour of South-east Asia with calls to Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia before it finishes in South Africa.

Departs 19 March, from £2,279pp excluding flights. cunard.com

This woman has been on 17 cruises in the past year. Here are her 9 tips for first-time, budget, and solo cruisers.

  • Shirene Thomas has been on 17 cruises from October 2023 to September 2024.
  • She plans to eventually move onto Villa Vie's residential ship .
  • She has 9 tips for first-time, solo, and budget cruisers, from buying WiFi to selecting ships.

Insider Today

According to the trade group Cruise Lines International Association, 10% of cruisers go on three to five vacations at sea a year.

Or, if you're like Shirene Thomas, you go on 17 a year.

Thomas, a retired social worker and actor in her 50s, told Business Insider that she calls herself "homeless all over the world." And for good reason — in late September 2023, Thomas "gave up everything" and uprooted her life in Wilmington, North Carolina, to move onto a residential cruise ship.

She had initially committed to Life at Sea Cruises' three-year sailing , then scheduled to depart in November 2023. But when the company, unable to acquire a ship, dramatically canceled the voyage just two weeks before embarkation, Thomas decided to reserve a cabin on Villa Vie's never-ending cruise.

Villa Vie Odyssey plans to circumnavigate the world every 3 ½ years, stopping at 147 countries and 425 ports in its first trip. The ship was initially set to sail in May, but certification and mechanical issues have since delayed its launch.

In the interim, Thomas has been scratching her around-the-world cruise itch with (you guessed it) more cruises.

So far, she's been on 17 sailings — 11 with Norwegian Cruise Line and some back-to-back — since she left the US one year ago.

She now estimates she's cruised 50 times in her life. And throughout her time at sea, she's picked up plenty of tips and tricks to maximize her budget and happiness, although it doesn't take much to fulfill the latter.

"My worst day on a cruise ship is better than my best day on land," Thomas said. "I really like cruising."

If you're a first-time, budget, or solo cruiser , Thomas has nine suggestions for you, from sailing solo to finding the cheapest cruise.

1. Try different cruise lines before building loyalty with one.

Different cruise lines target different demographics, from adult-only Virgin Voyages to Gen X-friendly Celebrity Cruises . Thomas suggests travelers wanting to achieve loyalty status should test two or three companies before settling on a favorite.

And if you're a budget traveler, your pick doesn't have to be whichever has the cheapest itineraries. If you stay loyal to one brand over an extended period, the extra perks could save you plenty of cash.

Thomas said she currently has Sapphire status — the third highest — with Norwegian Cruise Line. With this comes bonuses like free bags of laundry, behind-the-scenes tours, and specialty restaurant vouchers.

2. Go with Norwegian if you frequently cruise solo.

Some cruise companies charge solo travelers a "single supplement" fee to compensate for lost revenue on dual occupancy cabins. To avoid this surcharge, book a cruise line that offers single-person staterooms — like Norwegian, which added about 1,000 additional solo cabins to its fleet in 2024.

Related stories

Thomas calls Norwegian the most solo traveler-friendly cruise line . In her experience, the company also hosts daily meet-ups and events for cruisers who go alone.

3. Most port terminals have free WiFi.

Live-posting your cruise vacation on Instagram can be costly. WiFi on Norwegian ships starts at $30 a day, while connectivity for social media websites on Carnival ships begins at more than $15 a day.

Thomas often books Norwegian's " Free at Sea " promotion, which includes five hours of complimentary WiFi on voyages of at least 12 nights. But as a self-described "frugal" person, she won't purchase an internet package if she needs more time.

Instead, she'll spend extra time at the cruise terminal, where there's typically free WiFi.

4. Stay on board during port days.

Like many avid cruisers, Thomas suggests staying onboard during port days, when most travelers are on excursions or exploring new destinations.

She finds these days to be the most relaxing. The entertainment, restaurants, and bars typically remain open, but the service is more attentive, and the ship is quieter.

5. Check the deck layout before booking your cabin.

Thomas typically opts for an inside "guaranteed" stateroom . It's the cheapest option but leaves the cruise line responsible for the specific cabin assignment.

If you'd rather select your room, Thomas suggests checking the ship's deck plans before making your pick.

Ideally, there would be guest accommodations directly above and below yours.

Cruise cabin walls can be thin. If you reserve a stateroom under a bar or nightclub, there's a chance you'll be able to hear the festivities well into the night.

Similarly, she suggests avoiding cabins near the elevator banks or next to the launderettes.

6 . Join your sailing's Facebook group.

Most cruises have Facebook groups corresponding to the ship and its sail dates. Thomas suggests joining yours ahead of the voyage.

In her experience, many group members will have already done the same itinerary or traveled on the same ship. "There's a lot of information to be tapped out of that group," she said.

7. Don't fall for upcharges.

A massage at the onboard spa may sound enticing, but there's a good chance it'll be more expensive than most on-land options.

With that, be wary of the upcharges if you're on an ultra-tight budget.

Unfortunately, yes, that means the fancy steakhouse dinner may not be a financially reasonable splurge.

"People will say, 'Oh, the food is so good, it's only a $35 upcharge, and I would pay more for the service and food I get on land,'" Thomas said. "But they have to remember they also pay to eat in the main dining room already."

Her one exception is the drinks package, many of which include desirable non-alcoholic options like specialty coffees and smoothies. "For me, it's worth it to pay one price upfront for all your beverages than it is to pay each time," she said.

8. Consider longer cruises for cheaper fares.

Most of the longest and most affordable-per-day itineraries are transoceanic or repositioning cruises .

These itineraries may have many sea days, but fewer ports means fewer port fees — and "a lot of bang for your buck," Thomas said.

According to data from cheap cruise aggregator Cruise Sheet, 15 of the 20 cheapest itineraries through September 2025 are transoceanic.

The least expensive per-day option, a 16-night Carnival sailing from New Orleans to Barcelona, starts at $42 a day.

9. Short cruises don't always have the flashiest ships.

First-time cruisers often gravitate toward short sailings. While it's a great way to test the waters, Thomas warns that ships operating quick cruises can be dated and lack the same exciting amenities as some of the industry's newer, flashier vessels.

Carnival is currently selling 76 four-day-or-less itineraries. Only 15 of the ships on those trips are less than five years old.

Similarly, about half of Norwegian's 27 short itineraries would be on its newer vessels.

One exception is Royal Caribbean's latest vessel, Utopia of the Seas . The world's second-largest cruise liner debuted in July at Florida's Port Canaveral as the company's first mega-ship to be immediately deployed on short three- and four-night sailings.

The strategy has paid off — "Utopia is crushing it," Jason Liberty, Royal Caribbean Group's CEO, told investors shortly after the ship's debut.
