An all-out brawl that broke out between dozens of passengers aboard the Carnival Magic cruise ship was sparked over allegations of cheating while on the trip, according to an eyewitness passenger who shared video of the fight with Fox News Digital.

Theresa James, who said she is a travel agent, told Fox News Digital that the fight started just before 2 a.m. on the ship’s fifth floor, where a dance club and casino are located.

An alleged threesome between passengers had upset their significant others when they learned of the rendezvous, according to James, who said she witnessed the fight from her door.

Beer bottles were smashed, and a woman may have been cut during the chaos, James said.

The brawl lasted about an hour, according to the travel agent, and took the parties involved from the fifth floor to the ship’s first floor, which James described as a huge distance. She said the altercation wasn’t physical the whole time, and an estimated 60 people may have been involved.

James credited Carnival and its security team for jumping in and bringing the situation under control.

She described the guests involved in the fight as "ignorant fools acting stupid" and said the situation could have been worse if not for security.

The ship arrived Tuesday morning with New York police waiting as it docked. Carnival said the ship docked in Manhattan as scheduled.

It's unclear if  anyone was arrested  or if New York or New Jersey authorities would handle it or another jurisdiction since it may have happened over international waters.

Meanwhile, James said that while the cruise got intense toward the end, it was an overall great vacation, and she has already booked another one with Carnival for August.

Breaking news, carnival must pay passenger $12m after she accused crew member of rape during 2018 cruise: judge.

A woman who accused a Carnival crew member of raping her during a 2018 voyage will receive more than $12 million from the major cruise line following a prolonged legal battle, a judge ruled last week.

Judge Kathleen Williams determined the incredible sum of money on Friday after the alleged victim claimed Carnival employee Fredy Anggara lured the woman, then 21, into a closet, locked the door and sexually assaulted her aboard the Carnival Miracle on Dec. 1, 2018, according to the complaint filed in 2019.

After the door was unlocked, the woman “immediately rushed away, towards her room,” according to legal papers.

“The assailant caught up with her and asked her to allow him back to her room,” the complaint alleges. “[The woman] declined his request. Once [the woman] reached her room, she burst into tears and told her friend what had just happened.”

The alleged rape took place on a Carnival cruise in 2018, according to a lawsuit.

Jurors awarded her $10 million in 2022 and after Carnival fought that verdict, Williams tacked on another $2 million, according to court filings.

Overall, Carnival owes the plaintiff, only identified as Jane Doe, $12,367,229, according to the Friday ruling.

The woman was pleased with the outcome, her lawyer, Daniel Courtney, told the Daily Mail , which first reported the payout.

“This is a significant day for my client, and hopefully for all sexual assault survivors, who can see that justice, though sometimes difficult to secure, is indeed possible in our country,” he said.

While the passenger hauled the eight-figure payout, Anggara has never been arrested in connection to the alleged incident. He is also not a listed defendant in the legal action.

In an aerial view, the Carnival Miracle cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Lines sits docked at Pier 27 on September 30, 2022 in San Francisco, California.

In 2022, jurors found Carnival liable for false imprisonment and sexual assault by the crew member, CNN reported at the time.

But the jury reportedly did not find Carnival negligent in the assault and that the crew member did not intentionally cause emotional distress on the alleged victim.

Carnival said in 2022 the crew member admitted to having sex with the passenger, but that it was consensual, “which is consistent with an investigation by the FBI,” according to the Washington Post .

Anggar was fired because cruise workers aren’t supposed to fraternize with guests.

Courtney told the Washington Post his client was “heavily intoxicated” and concussed” during the alleged rape after she hit her head during a fall.

“To say that it’s consensual is really hurtful to her,” Courtney argued.

The Post has sought comment from Carnival and Courtney.

Carnival Announces Changes To Stop Passengers’ Bad Behavior — 3 Things It’s Doing Now

carnival cruise bad news 2022

  • News and Tips
  • Travel News

As the spring break and summer cruise seasons approach, Carnival Cruise Line wants future passengers and prospective passengers alike to know it will not tolerate unruly or illegal activity aboard its ships.

First, the cruise line began sending a “Guest Advisory” email to people who have already booked upcoming cruises, according to Cruise Hive . That email explained that unruly, disruptive, or illegal activity will be met with consequences that range from fines of $500 to the disembarkation of passengers and banning them from future Carnival cruises.

Then, in a YouTube video , Christine Duffy, Carnival’s president, further addressed the issue of disturbing and illegal activity among passengers. She also noted that such behavior will not be tolerated.

“We’ve all seen the news coverage and social media posts of people behaving badly,” Duffy said. “It’s happening in stores and restaurants, at sporting events, in schools, on airplanes, at theme parks, and yes, on cruise ships too. I want to share with you the steps that we have taken to ensure that our guests have a safe, fun, and great vacation on board.”

Carnival’s emails and Duffy’s video don’t come as a surprise since there were multiple disturbances aboard its ships last year.

For instance, in an incident on June 27, 2022, somewhere between 40 and 60 people were involved in an altercation that allegedly began over accusations of infidelity that occurred while aboard the Carnival Magic as the ship was returning to New York City after an Eastern Caribbean sailing.

Then, a few days later, there was another brawl aboard the Carnival Elation on July 6, 2022, as the ship was returning to its homeport in Jacksonville, Florida, at the end of a five-night sailing to the Bahamas.

Details explaining Carnival’s safety and security policies are included in its ticket contract, “which you should review prior to booking,” Duffy explained in her video. She then added, “So please, help us make sure your Carnival vacation is safe, fun, and memorable by respecting each other, our crew, and the ocean.”

Here are the steps Carnival is taking to make sure its cruises are safe and fun for all passengers.

More Security On Ships

It’s only logical that Carnival’s first step to increasing safety, and quickly and severely addressing unruly, disruptive, or illegal activity is to add more security personnel.

Drug-Sniffing Dogs At Ports

Carnival is also now using narcotics-sniffing dogs at home ports to screen luggage. Those screenings take place both routinely and randomly.

“Our guests shouldn’t be surprised to see dogs come on board at both our home ports and destination ports to make random searches,” Duffy explained.

“In case there’s any confusion, let me remind guests that while marijuana and cannabis products may be legal in some states, we are required to follow federal law, irrespective of the law in the state where you may be boarding your ship,” Duffy continued. “For guests using medical marijuana, you should consult with your physician about an alternative therapy during your cruise.”

Curfew For Passengers Under 18 Years Old

Carnival has also implemented a youth curfew aboard its ships.

Passengers who are 17 years old or younger must be in their stateroom by 1 a.m. The exception is if they are accompanied by an adult in their traveling party who is at least 21 years old.

The Consequences For Bad Behavior

The consequences for violating Carnival’s code of conduct are spelled out in Carnival’s emails, Duffy’s video, and the cruise contract. What’s more, passengers must acknowledge and agree to the code of conduct during embarkation, Duffy said.

For example, “Guest agrees not to engage in any lewd, lascivious, indecent, obscene, offensive, or outrageous behavior while on board and specifically agrees that violation of this policy may result in confinement or debarkation from the vessel with no refund to the guest and at guest’s own expense for repatriation and travel,” the Cruise Ticket Contract states .

The contract also notes that “any illegal activity or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.” It goes on to explain that “any guest whose conduct affects the comfort, enjoyment, safety, or well-being of other guests or crew will be detained onboard and/or disembarked at their own expense and will be prohibited from sailing with Carnival in the future.”

Furthermore, violations of Carnival’s policy will result in fines of $500.

Finally, as Duffy explained, Carnival follows U.S. federal law, which prohibits possession and use of recreational/medicinal marijuana and other illegal controlled substances.

The consequences of violating Carnival’s marijuana policy include a $500 fine per violation. It also may result in the disembarkation of all guests in that stateroom.

Carnival cruise ship catches fire for the second time in 2 years

By Emily Mae Czachor

Updated on: March 25, 2024 / 9:57 AM EDT / CBS News

A Carnival cruise ship will be out of commission for repairs for at least a week after its exhaust funnel caught fire and partially collapsed Saturday during a trip to the Bahamas. It marked the second time in just under two years that the funnel on this same ship, the Carnival Freedom, went up in flames while carrying passengers.

What caused the most recent incident is still being investigated, according to the cruise company. No one on board the ship was injured, but Carnival said two fire crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

The Carnival Freedom left from Port Canaveral, Florida, on Thursday and was supposed to travel for several days through the Bahamas before returning Monday to Port Canaveral. It was not immediately clear how many passengers and crew were on board the Freedom when the fire erupted, but the cruise ship can accommodate 2,980 guests and 1,150 crew members at capacity. CBS News contacted Carnival for more information.

The ship initially reported a fire at around 3:15 p.m. EDT on Saturday, on the port side of the ship's exhaust funnel as it sailed 20 miles off of the Bahamas' Eleuthera Island en route to Freeport, the company said in a statement. It had changed course to turn toward Freeport, at the northern tip of the island chain, after cancelling a stop farther south in Princess Cays because of bad weather. Eyewitnesses said that a lightning strike may have sparked the fire, a claim that Carnival said "is being investigated but cannot yet be confirmed."

carnival-freedom.png

A fire response team was activated quickly to put out the blaze once it broke out, as the Freedom's captain shifted the cruise liner toward the heavy rain nearby in hopes that would help. The fire was extinguished by 5:20 p.m., Carnival said, including flames from a portion of the funnel that broke off and fell onto one of the ship decks. Funnels are essentially used as smokestacks or chimneys to expel fumes and engine exhaust.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the Carnival Freedom crew was able to extinguish the fire Saturday without their help. They were aware of the fire, though, and issued a Captain of the Port order to the cruise ship before it was scheduled to enter Port Canaveral, Florida, on Monday. Captain of the Port orders are  broad mandates that the Marine Safety and Security Council describes as a tool granting Coast Guard crews "with operational controls over an emergent situation posing safety, security, or environmental risks."

"We are continuing to monitor the situation," the Coast Guard said in a statement.

Although Carnival said at first that it did not expect the fire to impact trips on the Freedom cruise set to depart Port Canaveral on Monday and Friday, a technical assessment carried out in Freeport on Sunday revealed more significant damage to the ship than they originally thought. The damage would "require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel" after disembarking guests in Port Canaveral on Monday, the company said in an updated statement following the assessment.

"The funnel has been stabilized for the ship's return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs," Carnival said on Sunday. "We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation."

Both Carnival Freedom cruises scheduled for this week have been cancelled. Carnival said guests who had booked those cruises would receive full refunds and future cruise credits.

The Carnival Freedom's exhaust funnel last went up in flames less than two years ago, in May 2022. It was in Grand Turk at the time, during a planned five-day trip from Port Canaveral. The ship had 2,504 guests and 972 crew on board, Carnival said at the time. None of the passengers or crew were hurt.

Is carnival cruising towards recovery.

In an era where record easy-money policies saved many companies from going bankrupt during the Covid-19 market crash, there were stocks that not only survived but thrived against all odds.

While the major cruise companies like Carnival Corp. (NYSE:CCL) managed to avoid bankruptcy, though, no one can really say they thrived. Business was halted for a while and has been slow to recover, and share prices have continued to flounder near the bottom, a testament to how not even a federal funds rate near zero can fix all the problems of cash-guzzlers with a chronic debt addiction.

Warning! GuruFocus has detected 6 Warning Signs with CCL. Click here to check it out.

CCL 15-Year Financial Data

The intrinsic value of CCL

Peter Lynch Chart of CCL

Extreme levels of debt even before the pandemic ensured that when no-sail orders were enacted and cruise companies found themselves without income and with ships to maintain, they were in quite the bind, forced to sell ships for scrap and issue additional bonds with 10%-plus interest rates just to stay afloat.

Things finally seem to be looking up for cruise operators as demand continues to recover. In previous months, even as some customers began to return, others stayed away due to Covid-19 precautions. However, on Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control ended its Covid-19 program for cruise ships, sending a strong signal that public wariness of the pandemic has all but faded away.

With things looking up for cruise operators, could Carnival finally be cruising toward a recovery?

Trying to return to normal

With Carnivals stock up 7% on Tuesday on the hopes for a recovery, lets focus on the positives first. Customers are returning, which is bringing some much-needed cash flows back to Carnival and its fellow cruise companies.

In its second quarter of 2022, Carnival reported occupancy of 69%, an improvement from 54% in the prior quarter. Booking volumes for all future sailings were double what they were in the first quarter and marked the highest point since the beginning of the pandemic.

As of the second-quarter earnings report released on June 24, 91% of the companys fleet capacity was in guest cruise operation. Cash from operations finally turned positive again in April, marking a key milestone.

For the week of March 28 to April 3, the company saw the busiest booking week in its entire history since its founding in 1972.

Revenue per share has recovered from the near-zero levels reached in the second half of 2020 and the first half of 2021, and while earnings per share is still negative, the bottom line is recovering.

Carnival and its peers are pulling out all the stops to try and get customers to return. Fares on 2022 sailings in the Caribbean are 2.5% to 7.5% below where they were in 2019 before the pandemic began, making cruises one of the most cost-effective ways to vacation. Carnivals rates begin at around $289 per person as of this writing.

In regards to Covid-19 testing, while cruises will still be beholden to the testing requirements of the individual ports and countries they visit, being able to scale back their on-board testing requirements could go a long way toward recovering a true vacation atmosphere.

This marks the elimination of one of the final major hurdles to a return to a more normal cruising environment, wrote Citi analyst James Hardiman. At this stage, it would appear likely that most, if not all, cruise lines would drastically scale back the testing and vaccination requirements on their ships to align more closely with airlines.

Sharks in the water

Despite the ongoing progress in the return to normal, Wall Street overwhelmingly rates Carnival stock a hold. This is especially notable because Wall Street is notorious for erring on the side of over-bullishness rather than over-bearishness. If Carnival is recovering, why have not we seen a wave of upgrades yet?

The answer mainly has to do with debt. No, Carnivals not likely to go bankrupt. It still has $7 billion in liquidity on its balance sheet as of the most recent quarters end, which should tide it over for a few more quarters. Analysts estimate that 2023 will see a return to profitability for the company, which would come just in time to keep the company solvent.

However, not going bankrupt is far from the only criteria for a financially healthy company. Below is a chart comparing Carnivals earnings per share to its total debt per share:

We can see that the total debt per share has ballooned to twice pre-pandemic levels. Even if earnings per share were to return to pre-pandemic levels, shareholders would be left with twice as much debt per share as before. Interest expense has multiplied by seven-fold from May 2019 levels to $370 million in the three months ended in May.

There are also worries that a recession is on the horizon, which could negatively impact travel budgets. While cruises are a lower-cost vacation than many options and can thus sometimes benefit during an economic downturn, a full-blown recession would certainly be bad news.

Its tough to value Carnival at the moment because there is a lot of uncertainty on how the recovery will play out, and whether it will be able to get its unprecedented debt levels under control in a rising interest rate environment.

The GF Value chart rates the stock as modestly undervalued based on the combination of historical valuation ratios, past performance and analysts estimates of future results, so if everything goes right for Carnival, it could see a solid recovery in a few years time.

For many investors, leaving this stock behind seems a no-brainer because there are much better risk-reward scenarios out there due to the general market correction.

With the further easing of Covid-19 precautions, Carnival will be able to take another small step on the road to recovery, but it will likely be far from smooth sailing from here.

The stock is undervalued for good reasons. Before a more bullish outlook can emerge for the stock, Carnival will need to make significant progress on its profitability and debt reduction, both of which are tall orders for such a capital-intensive business.

Carnival Freedom cruise ship catches fire near Bahamas

TAMPA, Fla. ( WFLA ) — A Carnival Cruise ship’s funnel caught on fire during their voyage near the Bahamas on Saturday.

Carnival said that at 3:15 p.m., the Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side from the ship’s exhaust funnel.

In a statement from Carnival, the team said, “The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames. Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike and that is being investigated but cannot yet be confirmed.”

A portion of the funnel on the port side fell onto Deck 10.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire at 5:20 p.m. All aboard were asked to stay away from balconies and open decks for their safety.

Two crew members fighting the fire were treat for minor smoke inhalation, according to Carnival. As of this report, there are no reported injuries for guests.

The U.S. Coast Guard was alerted and has activated their response team. The cruise is expected to continue sailing to Freeport and arrive on Sunday morning.

The ship was around 20 miles from Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas, heading to Freeport. The ship departed from Port Canaveral on Thursday for a four-day trip.

On May 26, 2022, the same ship caught on fire while docked in Grand Turk . The inside of the Freedom’s funnel erupted in smoke and flames. The trip that was scheduled following the voyage had to be canceled.

The cruise does not expect the fire to impact the next voyage scheduled for Monday.

Passengers traveling on a Carnival Cruise ship reported bad smells coming from the vessel, which they said made them ill, the US Coast Guard said on Thursday.

Some guests onboard the cruise liner, called Carnival Magic, were "impacted by an odor from an exterior painting project yesterday," Carnival Cruise Liner said in a statement to Insider.

The Coast Guard told Insider on Thursday that it was investigating the incident involving reports of "foul odor and fumes, as well as passengers reporting sickness."

There were no reports of immediate distress, the Coast Guard said, adding that it didn't have any further information at the time.

The Carnival Magic, which can accommodate more than 3,600 guests , returned on Thursday to the city of Norfolk in Virginia, where all of the passengers disembarked, Carnival Cruise said. Investigators from the Coast Guard boarded the cruise liner after its arrival in Norfolk, the authorities tweeted .

Carnival said the crew members reacted quickly to the incident and helped the passengers. The company didn't disclose the details of the trip to Insider but told the magazine People that it returned to Norfolk from the Bahamas as scheduled.

“The company expects to remove three additional smaller-less efficient ships from its fleet,” Carnival said in a statement issued on Wednesday morning. “Two of these three ships are from Costa Cruises’ fleet as part of the company’s strategy to right-size the brand in light of the continued closure of cruise operations in China, and Costa’s significant presence there prior to the pause in the company’s guest cruise operations. Once completed in spring 2024, the company’s fleet optimization strategy will have reduced Costa’s capacity so that it approximates the 2019 capacity Costa dedicated outside of Asia to its core markets in Continental Europe.”

With the sale of the ships, Carnival said it now expects total capacity growth of 3 percent for 2023 compared to 2019, at the lower end of the previous guidance range of 3 to 5 percent.

The prudent capacity growth rate includes the benefit that newly delivered ships will represent nearly a quarter of the company’s capacity.

With three more ships set to leave, Carnival has divested of approximately 26 cruise ships since the start of the pandemic.

Carnival Spirit 10/8/22: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

What's up Cruise Critic family. I have a long wait at the Miami airport, so I figured I'd share some thoughts on my recent 8 day cruise on the Carnival Spirit from Miami to Puerto Plata, San Juan, St. Maarten, and St. Thomas. I'm not going to be super detailed because I have the attention span of a goldfish and with the exception of a few great posters, no one cares about that kind of detail.

If you have any specific questions about things I didn't touch on, feel free to ask! I'm going to break down the onboard part into The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (and there will be an ugly bit, so stay tuned), and the four ports of call.

For some background, I'm Nate and live in Arlington, Virginia and I've been traveling solo since the NCL Escape back in 2017. As you can see from my signature, I mostly do Carnival and NCL, with some Royal sprinkled in recently. My preferred line is NCL because they treat the solos well, but I still love Carnival and keep coming back.

Let's be positive for once on her and start with...

  • The ship-This was my first time on the Spirit class and first time on the Carnival Spirit. I loved the layout of the ship and it never felt too crowded or jam packed (unless you get stuck behind a Berlin Wall-like blockade of scooters and walkers. Let's have some spatial self-awareness puz-lease!)
  • Embarkation-I used Verifly, but they didn't bother to look at it. It was still super quick and painless.
  • Debarkation-Again, super quick and painless. I walked off with my bag around 8:45 and it was not crowded or chaotic like it normally is
  • Alchemy Bar-Seriously, this was a genius part on Carnival's end. Amazing drinks and amazing bartenders as always. I love craft cocktails, so this is my favorite place on board. Viktor, who just ended his contract today actually, has been on Spirit for almost NINE MONTHS, since before the initial startup in Jacksonville. He's coming to Miracle in a month, so make sure you seek him out. Katiya and Giovanni were the other alchemists and were also amazing. (Gio kept making me a strawberry vodka drink with raspberries that was incredible)
  • The Cruise Director Erin-She might be one of my low key favorites. She's not cheesy and doesn't rely on gimmicks or lame jokes to be a CD. She's personable and engaging. Specifically I really enjoyed her during the Military Appreciate gathering and the Love and Marriage show
  • The Military Appreciation Gathering-Carnival is the only one who does something like this and it's one of my favorite things every cruise. I love that they have a dedicated event for us to support our military
  • Most Food-I'll get into a few notable misses in The Bad section, but by and large, the food was really good. This is super subjective, so I won't drag this out
  • Blue Iguana Cantina-these burritos and tacos are always delicious. I had so many this week. The exact number I had is between me and God only
  • Chopsticks in the buffet-I love Asian food and eat it frequently at home. Every time I went this food was delicious. I really appreciated all the sauces (including hot oil!!!) at the end of the buffet.
  • Steakhouse-A friend graciously invited me to join him in the steakhouse. The food was excellent and the company was even better. The wasabi mashed potatoes are an unusual pairing, but absolutely delicious
  • Fitness Center/Spa-I love that this class as a free sauna and steam room in the locker room. I hate the trend of tiny co-ed thermal suites that are an upcharge. I actually used the gym and there was a lot of equipment, free weights, etc. Everything you need for a ship workout. The rower may have been broken or I'm just idiot.

I'm sure there is plenty more, but that what I have for now. I'll add more when I think of it. Goldfish-like attention span, remember?

Now to what y'all really want to hear...this won't be too long, but a few things i want to mention

  • The music in Serenity. Oh my god it was awful. They were playing the hits of the 1930's it felt like, which was appropriate because the music made me depressed. I heard someone else complain and the staff member said they can't change it.
  • Love music in general- Reallyyyyyyy weak offerings this week. There was a quartet that played that I didn't care for. There was a duo that played that wasn't very good in my opinion. There was always a latin band, but I didn't hear them much. The guitar player was also just...meh. I only saw the piano bar on the schedule once or twice. I never saw him, but heard he was good. The music this weak was just bad in general (i miss the country duo from the Valor)
  • Housekeeping- I'll get into this in The Ugly section, but my room steward was not great. I found a dirty nail file in the closet, didn't get fresh towels sometimes, cups weren't taken away, and he tried to force me into AM service. Really disappointing.
  • Service in the steakhosue- the food was great, but service was not great. It wasn't crowded and they didn't seem understaffed. We kept having to ask for drink refills. Items were forgotten. And it took FOREVER
  • The Deli-They apparently got a new menu (which I probably would have never noticed honestly). The sandwiches this were just not good in my opinion. I got a buffalo chicken sandwich and she put something on it that looked and tasted like a carrot, but still not 100% sure what it was... Most of them were so bread-heavy with not enough inside. They also didn't have fries but once and had regular lays chips instead. Personal preference, but I'd rather have fries.
  • Bonsai-So it wasn't thaaaat bad, but if I'm going to an upcharge restaurant, I'd expect something a bit better. The salmon tiradito was really, really tiny (good flavor though). I also got two rolls and they were fine, but nothing outstanding. I've had much better sushi on NCL honestly. For dessert I got the yuzu custard and it was not great. This might have been a texture issue, which is on me admittedly, but it was just weirdly gelatinous and chunky at the same time
  • Guys Burgers- Y'all, this is the most overrated thing in the entire Carnival universe. The burgers are overcooked and flavorless. The fires are bland and not like the good, seasoned ones they used to have. The burger I just had in the Miami airport was far better than Guys

None of these were all that major, but I feel like it was worth mentioning. Mostly a personal opinion, so feel free to disagree and judge for yourself!

I'm salivating for the ugly 😁

Haha

havanadaydreaming

Looking forward to the thread. We sail Spirit in Dec.  Will be my 10th different Carnival ship but ive really had fun on each one.

And now for...

So this was not great. I stayed in cabin 8118, which is forward on Deck 8. It was directly below the spa and I thought it was a great location. Would stay in this location again. My issue was with houskeeping. I touched on it above with finding a dirty nail file, towels, cups, etc. That wasn't the main issue.

(side bar-the bed was really comfy and I had nice firm pillows that supported by head well. I hate the flat pancake pillows)

On night two at about midnight, I was in that weird half-asleep/half-awake phase. I felt something fall onto my head and thought a hair was just tickling my forehead. I have very short hair (and a receding hairlines), so there isn't a long hair to get out of place, but that's how I rationalized it when I was half asleep. THEN I FELT SOMETHING SCURRY ACROSS MY FACE. Let me say that again. Something quickly crawled across my face in my bed. I flipped the light on so fast and found a COCKROACH crawling around in my bed. I ran and grabbed some toilet paper and killed it and flushed it.

I went down to guest services because I feel like a cockroach running across my face in my cabin is something to be reported and not just me being a Karen. The guest services guy really didn't seem interested at all and just said he'd call housekeeping. Went back to my room and the housekeeping deck manager and another guy came by. I didn't have a picture and they couldn't find anything, so they just kinda left and said to call them if I need anything. Fine. Whatever. I just want to go bed.

On the St. Maarten night, it was about 2am and I woke up and felt something crawling on my chest. IT WAS ANOTHER COCKROACH. I flipped out again, but this one escaped my wrath, BUT I got a picture of it to prove that I'm not crazy and there was indeed cockroaches in my cabin. I called housekeeping and the deck supervisor and the pest control guy came by. They couldn't find anything, but left some traps and said they'd do a thorough search when I'm in St. Thomas and check every nook and cranny. Ok cool.

Got back from St. Thomas and it looked like they had indeed searched my cabin but didn't leave a note or anything. Waited until my steward turned down my cabin. Still no note or mention of anything. I walked down to guest services that night and showed a lovely guy named Angel the pictures and asked if there was any news. He pulled up my account and read me the report from housekeeping. They did search my cabin and found a cockroach (and killed it). He actually took the time to listen and empathized that two cockroaches have crawled across my body while trying to sleep. He refunded some onboard charges and tried to offer more, but I politely declined because refunding charges was more than enough. I was just glad someone listened and cared.

He offered me to move cabins, but I did not want to pack everything up, move it, and unpack for the last 4 days.

On night 6,  lightning struck a third time in the same spot and I found a third cockroach on my bed and a fourth on my wall. I killed them both with a fury and went to bed angry. I didn't bother going to guest services because there isn't much else they can do. They refunded charges and it's too late in the cruise to move cabins. Thankfully I had no issues the last two nights.

In summary, I found FOUR COCKROACHES in my cabin. The first guest services guy couldn't care less. Housekeeping was not communicative and my steward was not the best.

This was a frustrating issue to deal with, but has to be (hopefully) a rare occurrence onboard a ship.

TL;DR-don't stay in cabin 8118 on the Carnival Spirit unless you're an entomologist.

Thanks

Thank you for your review. We sail on Spirit this December and I appreciate the information you shared.

As far as the Ugly part: O.M.G.  I think I would have required a helicopter evacuation off the ship after the first incident, and I'm pretty sure I would have insisted that they light the room on fire after the second time. Ugh! I'm good about letting minor stuff slide, but that's horrible. You're a lot braver than I am -- I wouldn't have been able to sleep in that room after the first time.

Oh. My. Gosh.  I am legit nauseated by your cockroach encounters.  Just one would be enough to freak me out for the rest of the cruise.  But FOUR!!!??? 🤢 🤮   That is utterly disgusting and unacceptable!  I'm no Karen, but I would want a lot of compensation for that horrible experience.  Thank you for taking the time and telling us about it.

It was worth waiting for. Thanks for the warning! I won't be sailing on Spirit. We have over 30 cruises on Carnival and have never seen a roach on a ship - at least not the living creature kind.

Neither have I, thank the Lord.

So... I'm now morbidly wondering if the whole ship is super-infested (which I think would make them fail inspection), or if possibly more likely a previous guest in this room brought super-infested luggage from home.  I know that some people live in such conditions, as disgusting as it is for me to think about.  I've seen "Hoarders" and even saw an episode of a cruise fanatic hoarder with a roach-infested home. 🤮

Excuse me, I think I need to go clean something, or sanitize something, or shower for the second time today.  Or anything to get rid this creepy gross ick feeling.  Wine.  Lots and lots of wine. 🍷 🍷 🍷

And then the work that would have to be put into making sure you don't bring any of the roaches home with you in your luggage... OK, I gotta stop thinking about this and go open the wine.

17 minutes ago, ShakyBeef said:   ...So... I'm now morbidly wondering if the whole ship is super-infested...   🍷 🍷 🍷

I figure it either is or soon will be. That many in one cabin makes me think they are in the walls, ceiling etc. They could catch it early if they were willing to block off that part of the ship and do some heavy fumigation. But my guess is they have the rooms booked and are not going to cancel a bunch of folks. Instead they will probably do spot treatments with the roaches spreading out and away from the danger zone, until the treatment dissipates at which point they will be moving from the new spot treatment areas back to the newly safe areas - an endless cycle.

So, the first thing I do upon entering my cabin is a thorough bedbug check.  I educated myself online how to do this properly.  But how does one do a roach check?  I mean, they don't just 'hang out' in one particular area, right?  Thank God, I fortunately have practically no experience with roaches, and so am quite ignorant of their habits.  I know to inspect under and around sinks, for example, but where and what else should I look for?  Admittedly (and also thankfully) I have no experience with bedbugs, so maybe I should just go to Professor Google, as I did about them for the roach inspection tips?  Ick, I hate this!  I'm so grossed-out right now. 😟

I'm not going to even think about it. I will just avoid Spirit. Like I said, over 30 weeks of cruises and I have never seen a roach on a cruise.

True. I think the reality is that most every ship probably has bugs on it. I've been fortunate to not have unwanted guests in my room so far.

Oh Lordy…we leave in 5 days for …yep Spirit. I am the worst when it comes to creepy crawly things ! I would move cabins and I would take all OBC offered. Now I’m dreading this cruise 😢

Great Review

Now we know why they are moving the Spirit to Mobile next October. The last stop before the Roach Motel checks out (Fantasy, Sensation, Ecstasy).

We cruised Spirit in July deck 8 and thankfully never saw any bugs, yuck! Hopefully they fumigated after you vacated the room.

Carnival's food has taken a serious nosedive since COVID.

I hate that you found roaches in your room 4 times. I would have definitely moved rooms no matter if it was the last night! Disgusting! I hope you seriously leave your suitcases outside for a day or so and wash them IMMEDIATELY before you bring them inside.

I know it's hard for hotels and cruise ships etc to keep bugs under control with so many people coming and going all the time - but nasty!!!!

Don't let me one (very isolated) experience sour your on the Spirit. I still had a great time and loved the ship!

Don't dread it! There are like 1000 cabins onboard and I just drew the short straw this week I guess. I had such a great cruise-one of my favorites actually. I would do a cruise again on Spirit again!

Oh god.   We are booked on the Spirit next month.  Most of your issues I could live with but not the cockroach.  Eeeek!

We are on the 7th floor.

We enjoy cruising with Carnival but will not do an interior room again. The ship is showing signs of her age and definitely needs to go to dry dock. We had fun and can’t wait to take our next cruise.
