AngelMaker levels listeners with a furious, focused, diverse, and violent extremity. Across a handful of split EPs and other releases, including two full-length albums, the Northern Vancouver seven-piece make their musical intentions clear. AngelMaker creates deathcore of the highest order, injected with blackened thrash, a smattering of power violence, and the urgent ferocity of underground hardcore.

Like genre standard-bearers Black Dahlia Murder, Despised Icon, and Whitechapel, AngelMaker summon the most brutal elements of Floridian death metal and combine it with the coldest permafrost of Scandinavian black metal, without the theatricality sometimes clouding the genres. The brand-new music unleashed by AngelMaker in 2021, crafted in recent months with producer Tim Creviston (Spiritbox, Misery Signals, Vultures), is the band’s most confident and destructive yet.

“We always strive to write music that makes people feel something emotionally intense,” explains singer Mike Greenwood, who shares vocal duties with Casey Tyson-Pearce. The triple-guitar assault of Coton Bennett, Matt Perrin, and Johnny Ciardullo, together with the rhythmic pulse of bassist Code Rideout, makes for a crushingly heavy, unforgivingly brutal, uniquely extreme metal sound.

AngelMaker reveres the old-school 2005–2010 era of deathcore, constantly reevaluating their own material to improve upon it with each release. The music combines with lyrics about personal struggles (fear, loss, sadness, anxiety), worldly ideas and concepts, and fantastical, cinematic themes. “We are constantly pushing the boundaries of our signature sound, while staying true to the roots in classic deathcore,” says Greenwood. “There’s nothing more satisfying than having someone tell you, ‘This sounds like something I loved when I was growing up and just getting into deathcore.’ Nostalgia is such an intense emotion.”

As the band adapted to the concert-less conditions of the worldwide shutdown due to COVID-19, they crafted a release strategy to ensure their increasingly perfected modern deathcore is heard. The first eight tracks from the new album “Sanctum” appear as two-song “quadrants,” building anticipation for the eventual full-length, and keeping AngelMaker top of mind as a return to the road draws nearer.

The guys were all teenagers when the band formed (half of them even went to the same high school together) and began a decade long streak of independence that continues to this day. 2012’s Decay EP put them on the deathcore map. A three-way split EP with Lament and Isolations arrived the following year.

The band’s dual-vocal and triple-guitar composition allows for new and diverse explorations of extremity, setting AngelMaker both inside and apart from the traditions of the deathcore subgenre. As Greenwood points out, AngelMaker “continues to strive for the freshness of modern extreme music while bearing the coveted torch of the old-school deathcore sound. And if we can write songs that make listeners go through a sort of catharsis, then I think we have done our jobs correctly.” Beyond mere technicality and devastation, AngelMaker trade in emotion, eliciting unique feelings of sorrow, regret, anger, fear, and depression, taking listeners on immersive journeys within the songs.

As the British Columbian ensemble’s first new material in roughly two years seeps out from the underground in 2021, diehards and newcomers alike discover new revelations in their music. Now ten-years strong as an independent, do-it-yourself force, AngelMaker triumphantly stands tall.

About Ziggy Marley

Ziggy Marley is an eight-time Grammy winner, Emmy winner, musician, producer, activist and humanitarian who has cultivated a legendary career for close to 40 years.  The eldest son of Bob and Rita Marley, Ziggy has hewed his own path as a musical pioneer, infusing the reggae genre with funk, blues, rock and other elements through mindful songcraft.  Equal parts master storyteller and motivational guide, he deftly explores issues from environmental awareness to self-empowerment, social injustice to political inequity, while returning again and again to the transformative power of love. About Stephen Marley

Stephen “Ragga” Marley is a world-renowned singer, songwriter, and producer whose work has earned no fewer than eight Grammy Awards. Born into a musical family, Stephen is the child of reggae legends Bob Marley and Rita Marley. He began singing professionally at 6, touring the world with his elder siblings Ziggy, Sharon, and Cedella in The Melody Makers. In 2008, he released his first solo album, Mind Control, which won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. His subsequent solo albums include Mind Control Acoustic, Revelation Part I: The Root of Life, and Revelation Part II: The Fruit of Life. Stephen’s first new full-length album in more than seven years, Old Soul, was released on September 15 via Tuff Gong Collective/UMe/Ghetto Youths International. The new album is a departure from his previous Reggae repertoire, showcasing more of his bluesy, acoustic soul side, as evidenced by the first single, “Old Soul.” Stephen is also an acclaimed producer, working closely with his brother Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley on the massive crossover hit Welcome To Jamrock. In addition, Stephen continues to champion charitable endeavors centered in Jamaica as a co-founder of the Ghetto Youths Foundation, along with his brothers Damian and Julian Marley.  In 2017, Stephen established Kaya Fest, the annual music festival, which features special guests and rare family performances, all with the larger purpose of raising awareness around the benefits of cannabis, guided by the mantra “Education Before Recreation.”

Julian Marley, born in London, England on June 4, 1975, to Bob Marley and Lucy Pounder, embraced a musical upbringing, mastering various instruments as a self-taught musician. Mentored by reggae greats in Jamaica, he released his debut album “Lion in the Morning” in 1996, followed by international tours. He contributed to Lauryn Hill’s Grammy-winning album and collaborated on a Stevie Wonder tribute. His sophomore album, “A Time and Place,” showcased a fusion of reggae and jazz. Julian spearheaded the ‘Africa Unite’ performances and performed at the 2008 Olympic Games. His Grammy-nominated album “Awake” in 2009 garnered acclaim, winning ‘Best Album of the Year’ at the IRAWMAs. Julian, deeply rooted in Rastafarianism like his father, remains committed to spiritual and global messages in his music, embodying a conscious movement in reggae.

Other than the soft landing of Harbour Town Golf Links, the site of the annual destination post-Masters, there’s another promise for the field of 69 at this week’s RBC Heritage – no cut.

It’s the fifth of eight Signature Events this season. Of the commits, 54 competed at the first major last week, so they’ll leave some of that sweat in the rearview mirror.

No time for the proverbial hangover after the Masters this time around as there are four rounds to be played on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. In addition to the usual spoils, the field is chasing 700 FedExCup points and $3.6 million for victory.

Although Harbour Town trails the Masters in the migration, it’s fair to wonder how fitting it’d be as a tune-up in advance of the major. Augusta National Golf Club requires the full bag and skill set with its unique combination of other prerequisites to be considered a force pre-tournament, but a primary objective there is to be properly positioned on approach. This is not dissimilar to the strategy to find the best angles at Harbour Town.

The par 71 in the Lowcountry stretches to a modest 7,213 yards, but because of routing, overhanging trees and some of the smallest greens on the PGA TOUR (at just 3,700 square feet on average), drivers will be holstered often. There are ball-strikers’ paradises, and then there’s a shot-maker’s track like this one.

Fields have understood that downshifting is required. Harbour Town annually ranks among the shortest in distance off the tee, while also typically among the easiest in splitting fairways. With targets yielding an average of about 11 greens in regulation per round, the small ball plays up. The only rough is just 1¼ inches high this year.

To that end, it’s a good week to be a bad putter on the overseeded Bermudagrass greens prepped to touch a familiar 12½ feet on the Stimpmeter. Tee-to-green tacticians always have an edge with small greens, and there’s a reason why Harbour Town led all courses in each of the last two seasons in total hole-outs. With a field about half the size from last year, it won’t be in the aggregate this week, but its conversion percentage from off the green will align with history.

Favorable conditions are expected until a risk of rain enters the equation on the weekend. Daytime highs right around 80 degrees will be accompanied by southeasterly winds off the Atlantic Ocean. They could kick up late Thursday and linger into Friday, but they shouldn’t be as challenging as what was faced by those who competed in the Masters.
