Everything You Must Know About Alan Jackson’s “Last Call” Tour

Everything You Must Know About Alan Jackson’s “Last Call” Tour | Classic Country Music | Legendary Stories and Songs Videos

Capital Concerts / YouTube

On Friday (March 11), Alan Jackson announced he is embarking on his “Last Call” tour this year. The full name of the tour is Last Call: One More for the Road .

While Jackson did not flat-out call the tour a farewell tour, it certainly seems to be one. A press release on his official website reads:

“ The three-time CMA Entertainer of the Year will thrill audiences – visiting cities and areas he hasn’t in several years for the last time – as fans relive hits like ‘Chattahoochee’ and ‘It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere’ night-after-night.”

But why would Jackson want to stop touring? It’s likely due to a health diagnosis he got over ten years ago…which he just revealed publicly last fall.

During an interview with TODAY in September 2021, Jackson revealed he was diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, also known as CMT, many years ago. CMT is a hereditary degenerative nerve condition that causes weakness and balance issues:

“… it’s been affecting me for years,” Jackson told  TODAY .  “ And it’s getting more and more obvious. And I know I’m stumbling around on stage. And now I’m having a little trouble balancing, even in front of the microphone, and so I just feel very uncomfortable. And I just want people to know that’s why I look like I do, if they’re wondering…it’s just gonna disable me eventually.”

The condition is incurable, though it will not affect Jackson’s overall lifespan.

In the press release about his Last Call Tour , Jackson said:

“I’ve always admired my heroes like George Jones, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn and Charley Pride who just played as much as they wanted to, as long as they could . I’ve always thought I’d like to do that, and I’d like to as long as my health will allow .”

So just in case this is “farewell” from Jackson, here’s everything you need to know about his Last Call Tour .

The tour will kick off on Friday, June 24 in Biloxi, Mississippi. The tour will conclude on Saturday, October 8 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. So far, there are 16 stops on the tour.

Fan club pre-sale tickets will go on sale on March 15 starting at 10 AM local time. Citi card members will also have access to the pre-sale tickets through the Citi Entertainment program. General admission tickets will go on sale March 18 starting at 10 AM local time (with the exception of the Savannah and Greenville shows).

The press release on Jackson’s website indicates that top-tier ticket packages are available. They “ …include a pre-show party presented by AJ’s Good Time Bar…highlighted by live music from James Carothers and Cory Farley, featured performers from AJs.”

$1 from each ticket will be donated to the CMT Research Foundation.

It’s hell getting old, in case you didn’t know.

If your body doesn’t cooperate, it can be anguishing. If you’re lucky, you get to reminisce, with your loved ones along for the ride, while continuing to do the thing you’re best at for a while longer.

Alan Jackson is a lucky man, and he knows it.

Slowed by a nerve disease that makes it difficult for him to walk, Jackson still delivered a triumphant performance at Honda Center in Anaheim on Saturday night, the third-to-last show on his Last Call: One More for the Road Tour. The packed house, knowing this could be the last time he plays California, poured out their hearts for the 63-year-old country veteran.

Country singer Alan Jackson performs at Honda Center in Anaheim...

The emotional centerpiece, among many highlights, came with “Remember When,” his No. 1 hit from 2003. Jackson showed he still has strength and depth to his voice on some of his most personal lyrics: “Remember when we vowed the vows and walked the walk/Gave our hearts, made the start and it was hard. We lived and learned, life threw curves/There was joy, there was hurt.”

The crowd responded with a prolonged standing ovation. If you looked closely at one of the twin vertical big screens framing the stage, you could see his eyes glistening.

“Thank you so much,” Jackson said. “That was so sweet. I appreciate that.”

Jackson’s wife of nearly 43 years, Denise, was there, too. Earlier in the show, Jackson told the story of how, when he first got a record deal in Nashville after years of struggle, the label released his first single, “Blue Blooded Woman,” in 1989. But it was a dud, peaking only at No. 45 on the country music chart. Not long after, Denise told him she was pregnant with the first of their three daughters. Jackson, whose first job in town was in the mailroom at The Nashville Network, told the crowd: “It scared me, because my first song didn’t do good, and I thought ‘I guess I’m gonna have to go get me a job again and pay for this baby and everything.’ Luckily the record label decided to release this next song, and I haven’t worked since.” He then performed that song, “Here in the Real World,” which peaked at No. 3 back in 1990.

That song launched Jackson to megastardom, and the honkytonk crowd-pleasers (“Don’t Rock the Jukebox,” “Good Time,” “Mercury Blues,” “Chattahoochee,” “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” with Jimmy Buffett), as well as the ballads (“I’d Love You All Over Again,” his first chart-topper) became omnipresent on country radio. Jackson wrote or co-wrote most of those big hits. Many of the original videos aired on Country Music Television played on the big screen behind Jackson, interspersed with family photos, with a great deal of footage of Jackson water skiing.

At one point Jackson stared at the screen looking at pics, taking in the memories.

Jackson’s last No. 1, “Country Boy,” came in 2008. A couple years later he was diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a hereditary, degenerative condition that has damaged the muscles in his arms and legs. He went public with his illness about a year ago on the “Today” show. Onstage, he appeared uncomfortable at times during the 90-minute-plus performance. Wearing a white Western shirt, light blue jeans and his customary Stetson, Jackson stood with help of a metal stand, but he walked gingerly from side to side to acknowledge the fans, and apologized for not being able to throw rolled-up T-shirts very far.

Jackson has two more dates on his tour – Friday in Atlantic City and Saturday in Pittsburgh – and he’ll be honored by CMT with its Artist of a Lifetime award during a special to be aired Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.

And despite the tour’s name, he might not be completely done performing. On “Today,” he said he’d like to keep going “as long as my health will allow.”

Much of the polished look and sound of these shows is attributable to Jackson’s tight eight-piece band, the Strayhorns. They all took turns with solos, playing the kind of old-school “real country” Jackson has often lamented is disappearing.

Trusted friends, family, and music that makes adoring fans feel good. That’s what Jackson has as he continues his journey. We should all be so lucky.

Alan Jackson Announces 2022 "Last Call" Tour

alan jackson tour stops

Country Music Hall of Famer Alan Jackson just announced that he is taking a victory lap with Last Call: One More for the Round Tour . The “ Where Have You Gone ” singer is set to kick-off his run Friday, June 24, in Biloxi, Mississippi, and will conclude the 16-city trek in Pittsburg on October 8.

After 30 years in the industry, Jackson has produced an extensive catalog bursting with chart-topping hits. While out on the road, the hitmaker will be hitting popular arenas across America and will be performing his fan-favorite classics.

The Last Call: One More for the Round Tour serves as Jackson’s first outing since publicizing his rare diagnosis with Charcot- Marie-Tooth disorder. The degenerative nerve condition is not deadly, but it could affect mobility. The icon spoke out about his surprising condition with Today host Jenna Bush back in September.

A post shared by Alan Jackson (@officialalanjackson)

“I have this neuropathy and neurological disease,” shared the Icon. “It’s genetic that I inherited from my daddy…There’s no cure for it, but it’s been affecting me for years. And it’s getting more and more obvious. And I know I’m stumbling around on stage. And now I’m having a little trouble balancing, even in front of the microphone, and so I just feel very uncomfortable."

However, he has clarified that his underlining health condition will not stop him from pursuing his craft and connecting with fans.

“I’ve always admired my heroes like George Jones , Merle Haggard , Loretta Lynn , and Charley Pride , who just played as much as they wanted to, as long as they could,” shared Jackson in a previous statement. “I’ve always thought I’d like to do that, and I’d like to as long as my health will allow. I’ll try to do as much as I can, but if I’m comin’ your way, come see me….,” he added.

Tickets to see the three-time CMA Entertainer of the Year are currently available for presale only at alanjackson.com/tour . Tickets will go on sale on March 18. Through the Citi Entertainment program, Citi card members will have access to presale tickets beginning Tuesday, March 15.

Jackson will be joining forces with CID Entertainment/ OnLocation to offer VIP experiences at his 2022 shows. $1 from every ticket sold will be donated to the CMT Research Foundation.

Alan Jackson Pushes Remaining Tour Dates Due to Charcot-Marie-Tooth Setback

Alan Jackson has postponed the final two stops on his Last Call Tour until 2023 as he deals with health issues related to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT).

The silver lining on this announcement is that the Last Call One More for the Road Tour of 2022 will not be his actual "last call," as he's now planning at least two shows for next year. The affected shows are Friday night's (Oct. 7) show in Atlantic City, N.J., and Saturday night's stop Pittsburgh, Pa. No makeup date has been announced for either show.

"I hoped I’d be able to be there," Jackson writes at his website . "I hate to disappoint my fans. I tried as much as I could to play this show at this time."

Charcot-Marie-Tooth is a non-life threatening neurological condition that affects his gross motor skills. When Jackson revealed the diagnosis in 2021, he admitted he'd been living with it for several years and that other family members have, or had it. Part of the reason he shared his diagnosis was that it was becoming more obvious that he was dealing with something, and that it may force him to retire from the road sooner than he wants to.

One dollar from every ticket sold for this tour was earmarked for CMT Research Foundation. The tour began on June 24 in Mississippi.

Jackson does have one other notable appearance scheduled for 2022: On Oct. 14 he's set to receive CMT's (Country Music Television) Artist of a Lifetime Award in Nashville. He's just the seventh artist to receive the honor, although it's not clear if he'll attend the event, especially with news of his health setback.  Carly Pearce,   Cody Johnson ,  Kane Brown ,  Luke Combs  and  Walker Hayes  are also being honored that night.

Alan Jackson Announces ‘Last Call’ Tour (But Not ‘Final’ One)

Trigger News Alan Jackson --> 17 Comments

alan jackson tour stops

Don’t call it a farewell tour or a final bow, because Alan Jackson isn’t. But after openly addressing some health issues recently, the Country Music Hall of Famer is being honest with his fans about his prospects for touring in the future, and how he many not be doing it forever. So just call it “Last Call: One More For The Road,” and hope that it’s not the very end. In September of 2021, Alan Jackson revealed that he’s been suffering from a degenerative nerve condition called Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, nicknamed (somewhat ironically) CMT. He was diagnosed with the condition ten years ago. It primarily affects the peripheral nervous system causing balance issues by compromising smaller muscles in the body’s extremities. It’s related to muscular dystrophy and Parkinson’s disease. The good news is that the disease is not life threatening, nor does it affect longevity. But it does affect things like balance and your ability to move. Alan Jackson wanted to reveal the condition, just in case people saw him swerving on stage and thought he’d indulged in a few too many gin & tonics. He’s also been performing lately while sitting on a stool. Alan Jackson said at the time, “I never wanted to do the big retirement tour, like people do, then take a year off and then come back. I think that’s kinda cheesy. And I’m not saying I won’t be able to tour. I’ll try to do as much as I can. I feel a little more freedom now, because I’m not trying to worry about getting on the radio and fitting into their limitations. I’ve always believed that the music is the most important thing. The songs. And I guess that’s what I’d like to (leave) if I had a legacy.” So Alan Jackson has announced sixteen new concert dates for 2022, including a date at the Gila River Arena in Phoenix originally booked for 2020 that has been rescheduled multiple times. “I’ve always admired my heroes like George Jones, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn and Charley Pride who just played as much as they wanted to, as long as they could,”  Jackson says. “I’ve always thought I’d like to do that, and I’d like to as long as my health will allow. I’ll try to do as much as I can, but if I’m comin’ your way, come see me….” TOUR DATES:

Friday, June 24 – Biloxi, MS (Mississippi Coast Coliseum) Saturday, June 25 – Knoxville, TN (Thompson-Boling Arena) Friday, July 29 – St. Paul, MN (Xcel Energy Center) Saturday, July 30 – Grand Forks, ND (Alerus Center) Friday, August 12 – Savannah, GA (Enmarket Arena) ** Saturday, August 13 – Greenville, SC (Bon Secours Wellness Arena) ** Friday, August 26 – Lincoln, NE (Pinnacle Bank Arena) Saturday, August 27 – Kansas City, MO (T-Mobile Center) Friday, September 9 – Lexington, KY (Rupp Arena) Saturday, September 10 – Greensboro, NC (Greensboro Coliseum) Friday, September 16 – Austin, TX (Moody Center) Saturday, September 17 – Dallas, TX (American Airlines Center) Friday, September 30 – Phoenix (Glendale), AZ (Gila River Arena) ++ Saturday, October 1 – Anaheim, CA (Honda Center) Friday, October 7 – Atlantic City, NJ (Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall) Saturday, October 8 – Pittsburgh, PA (PPG Paints Arena)

I sure hope it isn’t, but I can’t help but feel this might be it touring-wise for AJ. I’m getting tickets just in case this is really the last tour he does.

' src=

Would have loved to have seen him tour Europe! Hope he can keep touring as long as possible and doing what he loves, bringing real country music to the world.

' src=

So the tour name will continue to be “Last Call: One More for the Road” for all future tours, considering this won’t be his final tour.

Or will this tour have multiple legs spanning some 5 to 10 yrs?

I think one of Garth Brooks’ tours lasted 4 years, with obviously multiple legs throughout. Solely as a marketing ploy to be the most lucrative tour ever, even though it lasted 4 years

' src=

If that’s really a big concern of yours, relax. It’s highly unlikely that Alan Jackson will be touring in 5 to 10 years. He might even be deceased in 5 years–then you won’t have to worry about that at all!

Not a concern… just interested in how they are marketing it. Giving the tour name “Last Call” but stating it’s not the final tour is perplexing.

It would be cool if they had multiple legs to this specific tour – Alan could have the most successful tour in the history books if this tour lasts for years (similar to what Garth did from 2014 – 2018)

You figured it out. By naming his tour “Last Call,” they plan to turn Alan Jackson into Michael Jackson. They’re looking to have the biggest, most successful tour in history. Just Alan–mostly seated on a stool–and his band. They’ll fill the Superdome and Astros Dome and Met Life Stadium and Wembley, and the Olympic Stadium in Beijing.

Good thing you’ve exposed the scam.

Also, Alan’s health issue isn’t life threatening. He can live another 30+ yrs.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Well people change their mind all the time. A few years ago George strait said he was retiring from touring and look at how that turned out. I think the name and the fact there are few shows and how they are spaced tell you that there are going to be fewer tours and shows going forward. Plus just because something isn’t life threatening doesn’t make it easy to live with. So that last show or tour may not be known til after the fact

' data-tf-not-load src=

My wife suffers from the same condition. She is in constant pain and her mobility has deteriorated over the years.

I had seen this already. I already signed up for his fan club just so I have a better shot at getting tickets. I don’t think this will be his last but he’s probably my all time favorite and I’ve never seen him, so I want to go. Because of his condition and if it gets any worse, you never know. Also the tour is really spread out for as few dates it has so you can tell he’s not going to push it. No shows really close to me but I’m gonna try to go to the Knoxville show.

Got my tickets, pretty good ones. Ended up getting 4. The youngest wanted to go back to smoky mountains so going to kill two birds with one stone so to speak, a little mini vacation. I see how all these shows sell out tickets so fast though. I got mine through the Alan Jackson fan club site code but there were at least 3 or 4 others type things like that all having presales. Heck time seats go on sale for general audience, you either going to have no tickets or the most expensive or furthest away. And lots of those are being bought up for resale. Between that and the fees you have to pay, it’s kind of rediculous. I won’t do it for lesser artist but it’s worth it for Alan or George.

' data-tf-not-load src=

What a sad reflection on country radio when someone like Alan Jackson says he doesn’t worry about getting on it anymore.

As the owner of a small handful of classic country FMs, I can say he doesn’t have to worry about getting on my stations. Jackson is one of the very few artists we play new music from.

Yea it’s sad when a guy like Alan basically gives up on radio. There are a few guys through my life when I see or listen to them, they are just the picture of country music. It’s nothing negative against some others, and I’m not saying a lot of others aren’t that. Some just have a little more shine. Alan is one of those. He’s had songs on these last two albums that are as good as any he has ever done but no radio play to speak of. But maybe he can embrace that better now and instead of chasing hits, just write and play what he wants to do.

I don’t care for where commercial country music has gone, but artists in their 60s–like Alan is–have never gotten airplay for their new releases in the history of country music, save for maybe a one-shot her or there or a duet with a current “major leaguer”–a la Willie Nelson with Toby Keith in 2002

Yea I agree with you for most part though a lot of those tended to go down in quality. I loved Hank Jr for a long time but as he got older, some of his stuff wasn’t as good. A good few like that but others still made great stuff but the industry moved on. I feel it’s a shame cause some of those guys still have lots to give. It’s a shame some radio station hasn’t jumped on it. Stations either play the current stuff or a few play older music but don’t tend to play any of the new stuff by those older guys.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Saw him play in Columbus in 2019, nice date night with the wife, had good floor seats in an arena, but found myself watching the huge video screens more than watching a live band play. Alan was sitting for most of it, no crowd engagement, and yes I bought the shirt. Not what I would describe as a dynamic performance but he’s still one of the best. Glad I went when I had the chance.

That’s exactly why I would want to see j. I don’t want all that rowdiness and such. George straight was pretty much the same way and he was great. Just the man and his music.

Movie cars, vintage cars, pricey cars this weekend at the Barrett-Jackson auction and show

W hether you're fast, furious or just nostalgic, for all things four-wheels, this is your moment to get up close and personal — and possibly even drive — the object of your desires. The Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction has returned to the South Florida Fairgrounds. The show and auction runs from Thursday to Saturday.

Barrett-Jackson's chairman and CEO, Craig Jackson, said the company is excited to return to Palm Beach County, fueled by the success of the January auction in the company's hometown of Scottsdale, Arizona.

"We come off our biggest Scottsdale auction ever, and we have a great line-up of cars this year," Jackson said.

Barrett-Jackson: Three days, more than 600 cars and a tank

The three-day event features over 600 vehicles including a 1983 Honda ATC 110 three-wheeler and rare vintage cars such as the 1959 Cadillac El Dorado Brougham — one of 99 ever built.

"Across the board we have movie cars, the '68 challenger from 'Joe Dirt,' and a lot of very high end sports cars…multiple new Ford GTs coming over the auction block, Ferraris," Jackson said. "Barrett-Jackson is a little bit of everything."

Jackson said this year's lineup will also include a vehicle never sold before by Barrett-Jackson, a decommissioned but fully functional 1976 Leopard Battle Tank.

"It's fully restored, you can drive it around," Jackson said. "It's quite the piece."

Also up for auction are 11 vehicles from local celebrity and car enthusiast John Staluppi's "Cars of Dream Collection," including a 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire that features a striking maroon exterior with matching leather upholstery.

Not just autos, but also 'automobilia'

The auction isn't limited to just automobiles, Jackson said, noting that hundreds of pieces of vintage automobile memorabilia, or "automobilia," are included in the auction's docket.

"Gas pumps, gas signs, '50s diner items, they're all authentic, original," Jackson said.

Unlike many auctions, he said, all vehicles and "automobilia" up for auction at Barrett-Jackson are marked as no reserve, meaning they will be sold at the price set before the hammer drops for the auction.

"So the last person with their hand in the air, if it's their dream car, they will own it," Jackson said.

How to bid at the Barrett-Jackson auction, and what to do if you aren't

To participate in the auction, bidders must have the required pre-registration forms, state-issued identification, insurance and payment method ready on-site.

For those not planning to participate in the auction, there's plenty more to check out. Vendors will be on hand selling a host of products such as hand carved sculptures, custom jewelry and unique home décor.

"We sell as I say, everything you don't need but want to have," Jackson said of the exhibitor marketplace.

Take it for a spin

Those looking for more excitement can check out the Dodge Thrill Rides and Ford Hot Laps, where attendees can jump into the passenger seat of the newest muscle cars from Dodge and Ford and experience their power as a professional driver races through the track.

For the first time in Barrett-Jackson's history, Volvo will be offering test drives of their newest models.

Food and live music will be on hand as well.

"It's a little bit of everything, and its fun for the whole family," Jackson said.

Watch Barrett-Jackson auction on TV

The auction will be livestreamed on the fyi and History Channel, though the history network will only present Saturday's auction. The auction also can be livestreamed via the Barrett-Jackson app .

General admission tickets for the three-day event are available for purchase online as well as at the box office and provide access to the entire event except for access to the auction block, which is reserved for bidders and private skyboxes.

For more information on the event and ticket prices, go to https://barrett-jackson.com/ . The South Florida Fairgrounds is at 9067 Southern Blvd., West Palm Beach.

The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

alan jackson tour stops

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

alan jackson tour stops

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

alan jackson tour stops

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

alan jackson tour stops

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

alan jackson tour stops

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

alan jackson tour stops

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

alan jackson tour stops

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
