Product Description

TURTLE: THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY is the story of a little loggerhead turtle, as she follows in the path of her ancestors on one of the most extraordinary journeys in the natural world.Born on a beach in Florida, she rides the Gulf Stream up towards the Arctic and ultimately swims around the entire North Atlantic across to Africa and back to the beach where she was born. But the odds are stacked against her; just one in ten thousand turtles survive the journey. She faces many hazards, her siblings are lost in the doldrums of the Sargasso Sea, she comes face to face with creatures of the deep and nearly dies at the hands of fishermen. She travels up north but she drifts from her life current, the Gulf Stream, into dangerously cold waters. When she finally reaches the Azores on the other side of the Atlantic, she sees the greatest celebration of life on the Earth as sperm whale and baitballs explode from the water. But deep and powerful changes are happening in the oceans the fish are disappearing, sea levels are rising, the turtles birthing beach could be washed away and bring a way of life to an end. Then her calling comes, she must return to her beach. When she finally reaches the shores of Florida, 25 years will have passed!Under a million stars, she crawls out of the sea to lay her own eggs and keeps the Turtles Journey alive.

A solitary long-distance traveler with prehistoric cachet, the loggerhead turtle makes a compelling subject for a nature film, as the spectacularly shot, aptly named Turtle: The Incredible Journey demonstrates, if at times too feverishly. Director Nick Stringer has availed himself of up-to-the-minute technology and old-school storytelling -- the kind with just a touch of anthropomorphizing but, mercifully, no character names -- to capture the arc of the marine reptile's first 25 years. It's a migration from Florida to the North Atlantic, Africa, the Caribbean and back to the place of birth to lay eggs. The film is fact-packed and kid-friendly yet filled with danger; only one in 10,000 turtles completes that round trip. The peril begins the moment the sand-encrusted hatchlings emerge, soft-shelled and toothless, to make their vulnerable scuttle to the sea. Via miniature high-def cameras, the documentary captures their race against predatory crabs with extraordinary immediacy. For the rest of the trip, Stringer creates a composite portrait, seamlessly supplementing his in-the-wild footage with digital effects and studio scenes using rescued turtles. Attempting to amplify the drama but instead calling attention to themselves are an unyielding score and narration that tints toward purple, delivered with mellifluous authority by Miranda Richardson. Yet the film's conservation pitches are subdued; this is no galvanizing doc like The Cove. Charting the peregrinations of one of Earth's elders -- a creature that has navigated the seas for 200 million years, and is now endangered --Incredible Journey makes some missteps, but never falters in showing that the loggerhead's survival matters. --The Los Angeles Times The trailer for Turtle: The Incredible Journey promises more excitement than you might suspect could be packed into a story about loggerhead turtles, a plucky seafarer with high mileage. Since it played at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was in the documentary lineup, the movie has picked up plenty of goodwill and awards. Last year its director of photography, Rory McGuinness, won a wildlife/nature award from the Australian Cinematographers Society. Given the quality of their work, the special-effects wizards who whipped up some visual wow for the movie, including computer-generated imagery, deserve a share of the applause too. The journey of the loggerhead turtle is, by any measure, an amazing life voyage, one that here reaches from the beaches of Florida to the eerie calm of the Sargasso Sea and the watery speedway known as the Gulf Stream before heading to Africa and then the call of motherhood. It s a trip that eats up thousands of miles, takes some two dozen years and is fraught with dangers, though sometimes in the movie that threat may be more imaginary than actual, as when a basking shark, the second largest fish in the world, cruises by with its weird wide mouth open, yawning in water and prey. Armed with little teeth, the basking shark feeds on krill and plankton, but its size and cavernous mouth do make for dramatic viewing. And there s plenty of nail-biting tension in Turtle: The Incredible Journey, including in the melodramatic voice-over by Miranda Richardson, so much that you may find yourself volubly rooting for the animal, or she as Ms. Richardson calls the movie s ostensible single turtle. --The New York Times It takes 25 years for a loggerhead turtle to make its way from Florida to the other side of the Atlantic and back again, but it took only two years for resourceful Brit filmmaker Nick Stringer to chronicle the voyage in the visually resplendent Turtle: The Incredible Journey. Subtly anthropomorphizing its chosen species in traditional nature-doc fashion, this well-lensed primer on one of Mother Nature's more harrowing trips reps fine educational fare for tots and should get by swimmingly in tube, homevid and possible theatrical channels. Opening sequence, set on a Florida beach, crosscuts rather over-dramatically between a newly hatched loggerhead and a predatory crab, immediately establishing the prey-or-be-preyed-upon threat that will characterize the turtle's long journey ahead -- through the Gulf Stream to the Azores, an archipelago nearly 1,000 miles off the coast of Portugal, then back home to lay its eggs. Along the way, a stately supporting cast of whales, sharks, jellyfish and luminescent microbes offer abundant distractions for Rory McGuinness' HD camera. Music is a tad over-insistent, but Miranda Richardson's narration strikes the right note of awe. --Variety

turtle the incredible journey full movie

By Manohla Dargis

  • June 23, 2011

The trailer for “Turtle: The Incredible Journey” promises more excitement than you might suspect could be packed into a story about loggerhead turtles, a plucky seafarer with high mileage. Since it played at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was in the documentary lineup, the movie has picked up plenty of goodwill and awards.

It’s a trip that eats up thousands of miles, takes some two dozen years and is fraught with dangers, though sometimes in the movie that threat may be more imaginary than actual, as when a basking shark, the second largest fish in the world, cruises by with its weird wide mouth open, yawning in water and prey. Armed with little teeth, the basking shark feeds on krill and plankton, but its size and cavernous mouth do make for dramatic viewing.

And there’s plenty of nail-biting tension in “Turtle: The Incredible Journey,” including in the melodramatic voice-over by Miranda Richardson, so much that you may find yourself volubly rooting for the animal, or “she” as Ms. Richardson calls the movie’s ostensible single turtle. Never mind that the wee hatchling that races on the beach and then swims through the roiling, churning or sometimes spookily dead waters as an older animal may not be the same one that swims by a fast-moving vortex of silvery fish or makes sweet turtle love. Indeed, some of what you see is not real but persuasive computer-generated images — in other words, special effects.

Does it matter? If you call “Turtle: The Incredible Journey” an “epic adventure,” as a poster for the movie puts it, perhaps such digital manipulations are no big deal. Yet since it played at Toronto, the movie has often been described as a documentary. Is it? Given the degree of artifice, the movie can sometimes seem closer to a docudrama or what in post-World War II Britain were called story documentaries, films that blended fiction and nonfiction — including actors and studio-set shoots — to appeal to a wider audience. For “Turtle,” the director Nick Stringer shot some scenes with rescued turtles in what, in the production notes, he called “a specially built marine studio.”

Mr. Stringer also said that in some scenes “the interactions between the characters were digitally enhanced with the latest in special FX and blue-screen technology.” Videos and information posted online show some of the results. On the résumé on his Web site, mckeewildthings.com , Greg McKee, of Wild Things, writes that the visual special-effects “footage of 3-D ‘wild animals’ ” he helped produce for “Turtle” was so realistic even “expert zoologists” didn’t know what they were watching. He adds, “Besides final modeling and texturing and animation of three photorealistic 3-D hero turtle characters indistinguishable in every way from real turtles, I modeled textured and animated blue sharks and composited and supervised almost 100 photorealistic documentary realism shots.”

Manufacturing reality isn’t new in documentaries, and neither are the attendant ethical questions. The field of nature films, for instance, has a long history of massaging and even brutalizing the truth. In his recent book, “Shooting in the Wild: An Insider’s Account of Making Movies in the Animal Kingdom,” Chris Palmer recounts a notorious incident in which filmmakers working on a 1950s Disney True-Life Adventures film forced lemmings off a cliff and even tossed some into the sea. The beat goes on: In a 2009 study on documentary ethics by the Center for Social Media, one wildlife filmmaker admitted to having a rabbit’s leg broken for a scene of one animal hunting another.

Using turtles as performers is of course a far more benign manipulation, but is nonetheless troubling. Documentaries always filter and stage reality, and editorial decisions are made with each camera angle and cut. But increasingly convincing digital technologies can make it impossible to know where nonfiction ends and fiction begins. By laying claim to the documentary mantle “Turtle” also lays claim to the truth. Mr. Stringer has said that it would be impossible to follow a single turtle for decades. But the idea that the audience needs one heroic turtle to follow rather than animals in the wild suggests that nature interests us only if it’s as packaged as a Disney animation.

In the age of unreal reality television and mockumentaries, it’s easy to shrug off truth claims. But embellishing reality in nature films, digitally or otherwise, for whatever reason (like turning wild animals into characters), does their subjects and audiences a disservice. Parts of “Turtle: The Incredible Journey” were created on a computer, as its credits suggest. But without a disclaimer that explains what’s real and not, how can viewers, including those who may already be skeptical about claims of environmental crises, trust that the whole thing hasn’t been made up? The loggerhead turtle is a threatened species, and one day all we may have left are its computer-generated analogues. Its fight for existence is plenty dramatic already, and is a story worth telling honestly.

Turtle: The Incredible Journey (2009)

Turtle: the incredible journey.

Turtle: The Incredible Journey is an award-winning film that follows the life and migration of a loggerhead turtle from hatching to maturity and a return to its original Florida nesting grounds. The loggerhead turtle, a threatened species, has one of the longest and most difficult migratory patterns of any marine animal: Sea turtles newly hatched on the East Coast of the United States (usually in Florida) make their way from the sand into the ocean, and then begin a voyage that can span the entire Atlantic Ocean, only to return decades later to that same beach.

SeaWorld Sets Turtle: The Incredible Journey for Summer Release

Educational Value

Kids will learn a great deal about the life cycle of the loggerhead turtle, from how it hatches in the sand to its dangerous trip just to reach the ocean, to its "incredible journey" around the entire North Atlantic. It's an inspiring, death-defying story, and kids will know exactly how resilient sea turtles are when they're done with the documentary. Many statistics are mentioned at length: 2 million loggerhead hatchlings are born each year on Florida beaches, turtles lay about 100 eggs at a time, only 1 in 10,000 loggerheads will reach adulthood.

Positive Messages

Turtles must overcome grim odds to complete their migratory journey. Humans are partly to blame for the pollution in the oceans; all of our garbage threatens sea animals' lives, so we must do our part to minimize our impact.

Violence & Scariness

In a several scenes, the turtle's life is threatened -- by hungry crabs, predatory birds, and the dangers of the ocean (including a huge cargo ship) -- but it's always safe.

There's nothing particularly disturbing in the film, though one early scene does include a tense sequence in which the baby turtle attempts to reach the ocean despite threats from hungry crabs and predatory birds. Nothing ends up happening to "our" turtle, but we do learn how few of them actually make it to adulthood. This is the rare case of a movie being more educational than entertaining, and it might not hold young kids' interest for the complete runtime. great documentary for kids

4 only watching with parent. loved it, but only with watching it with parent, otherwise too much, what's the story.

Narrated by Miranda Richardson , this wildlife documentary chronicles THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY of the loggerhead turtle, from tiny hatchling to sea voyager to full adult who will make the return trip back to her ancestral home on the beaches on Florida. As viewers learn early on, only one in every 10,000 turtles will ever make it to adulthood; but against all odds, this "little turtle that could" weathers every potential threat -- other animals, cargo ships, hunger -- to undergo one of the animal kingdom's longest migrations.

Is It Any Good?

The visuals are beautiful, but the story feels about half an hour too long. And while the swelling score and intense voice over try to make every scene feel significant, unless you (or your kid) is a passionate turtle lover, you may begin to wonder where you've stashed your copy of March of the Penguins .

Filmmakers who direct animal documentaries must balance the need to show the natural world as it unfolds in front of the camera with the desire to create a more human-like drama for the sake of entertainment. Unfortunately, Turtle swings a little too far in the latter direction, with overwrought narration. There also isn't that much inherent tension. It's not that "our" turtle doesn't face any pulse-quickening moments, but after her initial race to the ocean, there's just not that much going on (and if she had been one of thousands of unlucky turtles, obviously there would be no story).

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about whether a nature documentary about an individual animal can be as interesting as a film that follows groups of the same animal or different species. Which do you prefer?

How do human actions affect the life of the loggerhead turtles? What can we do to minimize our impact on the sea?

What's the movie's environmental message? How does it appear in the film?

Penguins march but sea turtles mostly float through instinctual rituals of reproduction, a process detailed in Turtle: The Incredible Journey. Nick Stringer's nature documentary moves about as fast as its subject, which is to say not very.

Turtle still has cinematographer Rory McGuinness's remarkable visuals in its favor, though, and reveals how even innocuous human activites curtail the loggerheads' centuries-in-the-making migration with refreshing subtlty.
