The total cost of your passport fees will depend on several factors, including: the passport type, the passport services you require and any additional services you might need or want to add on.

If you are in a rush, a passport expediting service can help simplify this process, but if you choose to apply on your own, this guide will help.

Note: If you don't pay the correct fees, your passport application will be delayed or denied.

Understanding Passport Fees

writing a check for passport fees payment

Navigating the costs associated with obtaining a passport can be complex. Below, we break down the fees into clear categories: mandatory fees, optional fees, no-cost services, and additional expenses.

Mandatory Fees

  • Application Fee: A required fee for most passport applications that will vary depending on the type of application you are submitting
  • Acceptance Fee: An additional fee for first-time applicants or those reapplying after a lost or stolen passport, payable at passport acceptance facilities

Optional Fees

  • Expedited Processing: For an additional fee (currently $60), you can opt for faster processing of your passport application.
  • 1-to-2-Day Delivery: Opt for expedited shipping of your passport with Priority Mail Express for an additional fee (currently $21.36 ).
  • File Search Fee: If your citizenship documents are missing, you can request a file search for an additional fee.

No-Cost Services

  • Correction of Printing Errors: If your passport has a printing error, the correction is made free of charge.

Additional Expenses

While the direct fees are a significant part of the passport cost, additional expenses can add up:

  • Passport Photos: Costs associated with obtaining passport-standard photographs will vary depending on where you get your passport photos taken .
  • Supporting Documents: Fees for procuring necessary documents, like a birth certificate.
  • Submission Costs: Expenses related to sending your application to the appropriate agency or center, including postage or travel costs.

While the State Department's fee calculator offers a helpful starting point, it might not reflect the full extent of your costs .

To help ease the complexity of planning for international travel, we've compiled the most up-to-date costs into our 2024 Passport Fee charts below. These charts are designed to help you accurately calculate the total cost of obtaining your passport, ensuring no hidden fees catch you by surprise.

What Does a Passport Cost?

Carefully read the information below to be sure that your payment is correct. Know that submitting incorrect passport fees or form of payment will delay the processing of your application.

Note: Form DS-11 is used to apply for a new passport or to replace a lost, stolen or damaged one. All applicants submitting this form must apply in person at an Acceptance Facility (which include most post offices), Regional Passport Agency or, if currently outside the United States, at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate General.

Applicants who need new passports expedited quickly but are unable to personally visit the regional agency should apply through a passport expediting service.

The US passport renewal fee is paid by those submitting application Form DS-82 . Adult renewal applicants in the U.S. may apply by mail (which we recommend).

You can also apply in person at a Regional Passport Agency if you have urgent international travel needs within 14 days or a life or death emergency that requires travel within 72 hours. Adult applicants outside the U.S. must apply through a U.S. Embassy or Consulate .

Why Your Passport May Cost More

Please note that the actual total cost of getting a passport is more than the sum of the fees paid to the U.S. government. There are additional expenses that are not listed below such as postage, the price of a passport photo, and a protective envelope to send the application form. These are just a few of the extra costs you should expect when applying for a new travel document.

If you need a passport faster than the 6 to 8 weeks it takes for routine service, you can add the expedited service fee to the total payment. This will reduce your wait to 2 to 3 weeks

We recommend you also add the cost of 1 to 2 days delivery when sending the application by mail. This is not required if you submit the form at a regional agency , however, you will need to provide proof of imminent/urgent international travel to use this option. Note that this is not an option for passport cards. Passport cards are shipped via First Class Mail only.

If the 2 to 3 weeks turnaround offered through typical expedited service is not fast enough or you are unable to visit a processing center, you should apply online for expedited service through a registered courier service . By doing so, you could get your passport as quickly as the same day you apply.

You Can Finally Renew Your Passport Online: Here's How

U.S. passport with stamps on page

Acquiring a U.S. passport can be quite a tedious process, especially if it's your first time doing so. Apart from filling out an application form, you need to come up with a valid proof of your American citizenship, have a valid photo ID, have a photocopy of every requirement, provide a passport photo, and pay all the necessary fees. More importantly, you will need to submit the application and go through the process it entails in person by either going to a passport acceptance facility like a post office or government office, a passport agency, or a U.S. embassy or consulate.

On the other hand, there are several ways to renew a U.S. passport. In some cases, you may still be required to make an in-person visit, but for people who meet certain criteria, the ability to renew a passport online could be available.

The U.S. State Department recently launched a beta program that allows citizens to conveniently renew their expired passports by submitting an application and other required documentation online. During the program's initial period, only a limited number of slots are allotted daily for applicants — once the limit has been reached for the day, people are encouraged to try submitting on another day. A full launch of the online passport renewal system is in the pipeline, although a release date has not been announced as of this writing.

If you're interested in renewing your U.S. passport, you must first find out if you meet the State Department's particular list of prerequisites.

Requirements for renewing a U.S. passport online

U.S. passport application form

For starters, only travelers who've already been issued a U.S. passport in the past — specifically people who hold passports that isn't more than 15 years old, was issued between 2009 and 2015, and has only been expired for less than five years — are in current possession of the passport that was valid for 10 years, and are currently residing in the U.S. may be eligible to renew their travel document online. Second, and perhaps more importantly, your scheduled travel must be set to at least eight weeks from the date you intend to submit your application and not any time sooner. In addition, the expired passport must be a regular tourist passport that is undamaged and was never reported as lost or stolen.

The applicant must be of age, at least 25 years or older. They must be able to pay for the passport renewal using a credit or debit card. Furthermore, there also shouldn't be changes needed to the name, gender, date of birth, or place of birth recorded in the passport details page.

You don't qualify for the online renewal system if you are 24 years old or younger, or are currently residing outside the U.S. You also can't go through the process if your passport was issued before you turned 16 years old, was issued more than 15 years ago, or has been expired more than five years. You also can't renew online if you intend to pay for the process in cash or if you're renewing a specially issued travel document, such as a diplomatic passport. Finally, if the passport you're trying to renew is damaged or is not in your possession, you will not be able to renew it online and will need to go about the process another way.

Assuming you've positively determined that you're eligible to renew your U.S. passport online, you need to create an account to the State Department's online portal through which to submit your application and other required documents. Here's how :

  • Open a web browser and go to https://mytravel.state.gov .
  • Hit the Sign In button.
  • Select "Create an account."
  • Enter a valid email address. Make sure it's the one that you check the most often, and preferably not the one associated with your work or school.
  • Select your preferred language for emails.
  • Read and agree to the website rules by checking the box.
  • Hit the Submit button.

Once you've created an account, check your inbox for a confirmation email from Login.gov. Confirm your email address and provide a strong password for your account, and hit Continue. Next, choose two multi-factor authentication methods to use on your account, such as an authenticator app like Google Authenticator, a code via text or voice message, printed backup codes, or a physical security key. Follow onscreen instructions to finalize setting up your account.

Once your Login.gov account has been created, go back to https://mytravel.state.gov, and hit Sign In. This time, select Sign in and provide your login credentials. Once you're in, complete your profile by providing the required information as well as the best way to contact you about your application.

How to start your passport renewal application and verify your eligibility

U.S. passport with keyboard mouse

After you sign in to https://mytravel.state.gov using your newly created account, you should see the option to Renew Your Passport on the Consular Services homepage. Clicking it will open the application form, which you will have 30 days to complete from the time that you start it.

During this stage, make sure you have your passport on hand as you will be required to enter certain information into the application as they are printed on the biographical data page of your passport. Pay attention to how your name is spelled, in particular the capitalization, existence of hyphens, and any spacing between letters in your name on the actual passport. For example, if your last name is McAvoy but is printed as Mc Avoy in your passport, include the space in your application. If your last name is hyphenated, you may need to enter it without one — either as two words or one word — in the application. The hyphen will be added to your name during the application review process later on.

In order to fill in your application, make sure your most recent passport had a 10-year validity. The passport must also be expiring within one year or should have been expired for less than five years. You can renew either a passport book or a passport card or both through the online renewal system, provided that you have the expired version of the document you wish to renew in your possession.

If the system confirms that you are eligible for online passport renewal based on the information you provided, you should see a message indicating so on the screen. If the confirmation was unsuccessful, you either need to try going through the application process again at a later time — the daily application limit might have already been reached — or explore a different avenue for renewing your passport entirely.

What to do when you're eligible to renew your passport online

person holding US passport

Once the State Department's online renewal system determines you're allowed to renew your expired U.S. passport through the online portal, you'll be asked to provide details about your international travel itinerary as well as a digital photo — no selfies, photo scans, or photos of already printed photos are allowed. You'll also need to pay all the passport fees associated with your application, anywhere between $30-$160 depending on document type. Around a week after you submit your application, you need to visit the Online Passport Status System to enroll in email updates so you are notified of the status of your renewal.

As previously stated, only those traveling at least eight weeks after the initial application may proceed with renewing passports via the online portal. As of this writing, only routine service is offered for online renewal applicants. That means it'll take about six to eight weeks processing time, plus around an additional two weeks of mailing time for your new passport to get to you. It's important to note, that you do not mail your passport in for online renewal and do not try to travel international with it, as it will be cancelled once your application is processed.

What to do if you need your renewed passport ASAP

passport birth certificate social security

In most cases, renewing by mail is the recommended method for those who hold an expired U.S. passport but don't qualify for online renewal. If renewal by mail is not an option, you will have to apply in person .

If you need your new passport in the next three to eight weeks, you can renew your passport by mail and shell out an extra $60 for expedited service, which will bump up the routine six-to-eight-week processing to two to three weeks instead.

If you need your new passport in less than three weeks, you will need to make an in-person appointment at a passport agency or center to renew your travel document. You can opt for either Life-or-Death Emergency Service or Urgent Travel Service, provide the necessary requirements, and see if you qualify. Walk-ins are not allowed.

Although expedited service is not offered for online renewal applicants, you may request a faster turnaround and pay the required additional fees in case your travel plans change after you submit your application. Contact the National Passport Information Center by calling 1-877-487-2778 and providing your application number or your last name and date of birth. Note that once you contact the agency for faster processing, you may not see updates to your application in your MyTravelGov account.

You booked an international flight, applied for (or renewed) your passport and have patiently waited for the blue book’s arrival. Weeks have gone by, and there’s still no sign of your passport in the mail.

With an upcoming travel date approaching faster than Usain Bolt running toward the finish line in the 100-meter dash, you might be stressing about where your passport is and whether you can get a passport quickly should you need to shift gears.

If you’re wondering “Can I get a passport in one day?” The answer could depend on where you live. So if your passport hasn’t arrived or you forgot to send it in for a renewal, here’s what you need to know about passport processing times and 24-hour passports.

What types of passport services are available?

The U.S. Department of State offers four types of passport services: routine, expedited, urgent travel and emergency. The type of service depends on whether you have proof of confirmed travel dates and when you’re traveling.

Routine and expedited processing timelines are prone to change, while urgent and emergency processing remain set. Current posted processing timelines for routine and expedited service are as follows:

Routine processing: Six to eight weeks.

Expedited processing: Two to three weeks.

Routine passport service is the slowest service available. This option is best for travelers who don’t have any international trips coming up within that time frame. To apply for a new passport or renew an existing one, you’ll need to submit your documents by mail or at an acceptance center , such as a library or post office.

Expedited passport processing still takes several weeks, according to the State Department. You’ll submit your application the same way you would for routine processing. Expect to pay a $60 fee on top of the routine passport fee for expedited service.

Urgent travel

If you’re traveling internationally sooner than expedited processing will allow, you’ll want to select nonemergency urgent service to receive a passport in time for your trip.

If you’ve already applied for a passport and are within 14 calendar days of travel, you should call the National Passport Information Center to notify the processing agency of your upcoming travel. If you haven’t applied yet and are traveling within 14 days, you need to make an appointment to visit a passport agency in person.

If your international trip starts within five calendar days, you must schedule an appointment at a passport agency. You’ll also need to provide proof of travel. Keep in mind it can be tricky to get an appointment since time slots fill up quickly.

An emergency passport can be processed within 72 hours only if you have a qualifying life-or-death emergency. You must call a passport agency for one of these appointments and provide proof of international travel.

Qualifying life-or-death emergencies include:

An immediate family member has died.

An immediate family member is dying or in hospice care.

An immediate family member has a life-threatening injury or illness.

Immediate family members include parents, legal guardians, children, spouses, siblings or grandparents.

You must get documentation of the emergency, such as a death certificate, a statement from a mortuary or a letter from the hospital. If the documents aren’t in English, you must have them translated by a professional translator. However, they don’t need to be notarized.

How to make an appointment at a passport agency

There are a limited number of appointments available for applicants traveling internationally within 14 days or who need to apply for a visa within 28 days.

To make an appointment at a passport center for urgent travel, you must call 1-877-487-2778 (closed on federal holidays). For life-or-death emergency travel, call 1-877-487-2778 during the week or 1-202-647-4000 outside of business hours. You’ll receive unique confirmation information that only you can use on the day of your appointment.

Note that you can’t transfer your appointment time slot to another person. If you can’t attend, you must cancel by phone or by emailing [email protected] , and your time slot will be assigned to another person.

A passport agency appointment is free of charge. If you’re asked to pay for an appointment, it’s not a legitimate appointment. Walk-ins appointments aren't available.

Bring a completed passport application, a passport photo, a valid government-issued ID such as a driver’s license, and payment for passport processing. Also, don’t forget the documentation required for one-day passport renewal, such as proof of travel and life-and-death emergency documentation.

Can you get a passport in one day?

If you’re trying to get a passport in 24 hours, know that it might not be easy. It could take longer to process your passport, even if you score one of the limited appointments at a passport agency.

Make sure to bring the exact documents required for a passport and ensure your photo follows the guidelines outlined by the State Department. Your trip is at stake, and you don’t want to mess this up.

As a last resort, contact your member of Congress

If you can’t get an appointment at a passport agency and all else fails, contact your U.S. representative's office. Believe it or not, they may be able to expedite the processing of your passport. However, you shouldn’t rely on this method — use it as a last resort only.

You still might not get your passport in one day, but it’s worth a try if you only have a week or two left before your trip, especially if you don’t live near a passport agency. Use a Google search to find out who represents your district and how to contact them.

How to get a passport in 24 hours

"Maybe" is the answer to “Can I get my passport in one day?”

The only way to get a same-day passport is by visiting one of the passport agencies — but only if you can get an appointment — and even that can take longer than 24 hours. The available slots are hard to come by, and you might be left behind while your travel companions jet off without you.

If you think you’ll travel in the future, we recommend applying for a passport now. And if you currently hold a passport, check its expiration date and renew well in advance to avoid having to scramble later.

Can you travel with an expired passport?

September 6, 2024 | 4 min read

A valid U.S. passport is required for international travel. If yours has expired, you likely won’t be able to go abroad or reenter the U.S.

In fact, some countries require passports to be valid six months after your travel dates.

What you’ll learn:

A valid passport is required to travel abroad and to reenter the U.S.

To enter other countries, passports might have to be valid for as many as six months past travel dates.

TSA may accept an expired passport as a form of ID for domestic flights if it’s expired within the past year.

There are ways to get a new passport or passport renewal expedited.

Earn 75,000 bonus miles

When is a passport needed to travel.

Passports are documents that allow travelers to visit foreign countries, access services and assistance abroad from U.S. consulates, and reenter the U.S. when returning home.

If you’re traveling within the U.S., you can also use your passport as ID to board domestic flights.

How long is a passport valid?

How long passports are valid depends on age. For people 16 and over, passports are good for 10 years. Passports for people 15 and under are good for five years.

But just because it’s not expired doesn’t always make it valid. For example, some countries require passports that won’t expire for at least 6 months past travel dates. Wherever you’re headed, it’s important to check requirements before you travel. For country-specific information, the State Department’s destination guide might help.

Can you fly with an expired passport?

TSA accepts passports as valid ID up to one year after they’ve expired. But that might only help for domestic flights. That’s because the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol requires a valid passport to reenter the U.S. There are also rules specific to destination countries.

Can you travel with an expired passport in the United States?

TSA might accept expired passports. But it may be safe to use another valid form of ID , including a driver’s license or state-issued ID card. Just remember to check on Real ID requirements before your departure.

Can you travel with an expired passport internationally?

If you’re traveling internationally , TSA accepts passports up to one year after they’ve expired. But remember that a valid passport is required for citizens to reenter the country. Plus, other countries might require a valid passport to enter.

There may be some exceptions. For example, if you’re returning to the U.S. from Canada, you can use a NEXUS card .

How do you renew your passport quickly?

Getting or renewing a passport generally takes around 6-8 weeks. But the State Department will expedite the process for a $60 fee:

Urgent renewal: By making an appointment at a passport agency, you could get a passport in 2-3 weeks.

  • Life-or-death emergency: If you have a family member who has died or is critically ill, you can provide documentation during an in-person appointment to get a passport within 72 hours.

Can you travel with an expired passport FAQ

Still have questions about traveling with an expired passport? These answers may help.

Can you travel to Mexico or Canada with an expired passport?

No, all U.S. citizens entering Mexico and Canada must present a current passport. This applies whether you’re driving or flying.

Is there a grace period on expired passports?

You don’t have to rush to renew your passport the moment it runs out. If you got it within the past 15 years, the State Department says you can renew it by mail. Passports are good for 10 years, so that five-year window is like a little grace period. But keep in mind that the State Department recommends getting a new passport 6-9 months before your current one expires.

Will TSA accept an expired passport?

Yes, an expired passport is accepted as ID up to a year after expiration. Just remember that in most cases, you won’t be able to enter other countries or return to the U.S. without a valid passport.

Key takeaways: Can you travel with an expired passport?

To help make sure domestic travel goes smoothly, it’s best to either travel with a current passport or have a second form of Real ID with you. And if you’re traveling internationally, being without a current passport could make travel difficult—or impossible.
