What Foxes fans are saying

Great retreat, really in the middle of wildlife - katavi wildlife camp.

We were spoiled on this camp, being the only guests. Very confortable tents, excellent food, very friendly staff, all was really nice. Wildlife coming close to our terrasse. View on the huge plain of the park.

Comfortable camp with great views and a team which did everything to make our stay successful - Vuma Hills Tented Camp

This is a great camp in Mikumi - comfortable and spacious bandas, great views from out terrace and the restaurant area and even a pool. The staff were friendly, welcoming and flexible. Food was good and plentiful. Our guide, Fraida, was enthusiastic, fun and knowledgable. Manager, Abdul, went the extra mile to ensure our stay was successful. Mikumi exceeded our expectations, with a fantastic concentration of game (partially due... Read this review

Would visit again in a heartbeat - Ruaha River Lodge

The camp is placed on the Great Ruaha River and is in an idyllic spot. We saw a variety of birdlife and game all from our banda - a particular highlight being a group of banded mongooses digging for insects right outside, just after we commented that on game drives these creatures always seem to be running in the opposite direction! All the staff at the lodge were very... Read this review

Wonderful immersive bush experience and a home from home - Ruaha River Lodge

Our family (incl 3 adult 'children') had a super stay at Ruaha River Lodge. The staff were professional and created a relaxing environment, so it felt like a 'home from home'. Our guide and driver (Enok and Onesy) were excellent. The bandas are spacious and comfortable, and we loved sitting on the terrace soaking up the passing wildlife and the bush experience. Breathe in the Real Africa

Nothing can prepare you for a trip to Africa – the vast landscapes, the thrilling encounters with big game, the thrilling details of their lives brought to life by your expert guide. It’s in the morning and afternoon activities that you’ll have the most memorable experiences, whether it’s on foot, atop a horse, in a game vehicle, hot air balloon or boat.

We’re passionate about protecting the environment, supporting our local communities and empowering women and girls in particular. From sponsoring small businesses to donating to schools and shelters and investing in our staff, almost all of whom come from the surrounding areas, we do everything we can to uplift and protect those around us.

This is one of the most gorgeous places I have ever stayed. Words in a review will not come close to doing it justice. Tarangire Park is a very special place and Mpingo Ridge is the best camp to take advantage of it all. The view from this camp is simply stunning and one of a kind. The rooms are beyond spacious and comfortable. The white and natural decor is perfect for Africa. The highlight of our stay though was the kindness and friendliness of the staff. They were the most accomodating of any hotel I've stayed. They made us feel like family and we were sad to leave!

We were there for a two night stay for my wife's birthday and they helped me pull off the best birthday surprise ever. the room was amazing, the food was amazing and the staff were on point. juma, the head waiter made sure that we were well taken care of. talk about value for money, that was it., the place looks amazing and the staff is really nice, really warm people. if you are looking for a place to connect with nature this is it. it’s the place where you fall asleep to the sounds of the forest. the view from the top is breathtaking. despite the low temperature, everything is very cozy excellent food also i would visit again.

Tanzania

Tanzania Safaris

In Kilimanjaro's footprint, Tanzania mesmerizes with the great wildebeest migration and vast wildlife parks – a thrilling country for unforgettable safaris.

Tanzania

“We are seasoned off-the-beaten-track travellers and I marvel that everything worked exactly as it was supposed to”, wrote a recent traveller of his Expert Africa safari. “Here we were, in the middle of central Tanzania, waiting for a 10:05 flight. Guess what? At 10:03, there was the plane, buzzing animals off the grass runway, then touching down to pick us up. It happened every time. Dazzling!” The same traveller went on to describe visceral wildlife encounters: “Having a leopard on your tent porch is not something I will soon forget. This is not Disneyland.” Not Disneyland could be Tanzania’s national motto. “We had to keep pinching ourselves” wrote a first-time visitor, “that we were actually there, in the places we had only read about or seen on TV.” Tanzania makes a sensational impact. Over one-third of this expansive land is dedicated to safeguarding its diverse array of wildlife: an irresistible draw for the adventurous. A journey through Tanzania’s treasure trove of biodiversity can takes you through a medley of landscapes – from sweeping grasslands to dense tropical forests, from vibrant coral reefs to the sprawling Serengeti , a fortress for Africa's ‘big five’. Watch in awe as large herds of elephants stir clouds of dust in Ruaha National Park , hippos frolic in the rapids of the Rufiji River and chimpanzees play in the lofty domains of the Mahale Mountains . Underpinning this vivid tapestry of wildlife lie some of the world’s greatest geological splendours: the Great Rift Valley, the Ngorongoro Crater , the iconic Serengeti plains , all of which play a crucial role in shaping Tanzania’s diverse ecosystems. Tanzania’s tropical coast, sun-dappled beaches and scattering of islands are equally fascinating. Here cosmopolitan towns date back centuries to early trade routes and secluded Indian Ocean islands lie surrounded by white-sand beaches and colourful coral reefs. “Our eyes were wide with wonder from the moment we left the airstrip,” sighed a couple returning to Tanzania for the first time since their honeymoon 30 years earlier: “We had the most mind-blowing, amazing experience.”

Tanzania’s top safari & holiday destinations

Tanzania’s safari and beach areas fall naturally into four broad groups.

Tanzania's ‘Northern Circuit’ is the term which defines the areas of the sprawling Serengeti , the stunning landscape of the Ngorongoro Crater , Tarangire and Lake Manyara national parks – the most famous safaris areas in Tanzania.

For a quieter experience, Tanzania’s southern parks offer unspoiled wilderness areas dotted with a smaller number of safari camps. The lakes and waterways of Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) offer magical boating safaris, while Ruaha ’s rugged terrain is excellent for walking safaris is home to a very strong population of lions.

Nearer to Africa’s heart, Western Tanzania is harder to reach, so few visitors come, but two parks are amazing. Katavi National Park protects a vast plain: the battleground for buffalo and lion, whilst an hour’s flight away, the spectacular Mahale Mountains rise sheer from the shores of Lake Tanganyika – providing probably the best place to track wild chimpanzees in Africa.

Lush and tropical, Tanzania’s coast & Islands are the venue for simple beach retreats to luxurious lodges – with the odd private island included.

Our travellers' wildlife sightings across Tanzania

While journeying through Tanzania, many of our travellers document their wildlife encounters – be it lions, cheetahs, black rhinos, or chimpanzees – and graciously share these findings with us.

This "citizen science" gives us a unique picture of the distribution of species, enlightening you on where your chances of witnessing particular animals are heightened during a Tanzanian safari. ( Learn about this survey's methodology .)

The percentages below signify the "average" probability of a safari-goer seeing wildlife where they naturally occur. Note that species with very limited distributions, like chimpanzees, can attain high scores – as they are frequently observed where they reside. When to go on a Tanzania safari

In recent years, Tanzania’s climate has become less predictable, but historically a broad-brush view of the seasons here has been:

July to October, the ‘ peak season ’, usually sees warm and dry days, with high game concentrations around water sources, including the famously spectacular river crossings of wildebeest in the northern Serengeti.

During November and December, the ‘ short rains ’, wildlife sightings remain plentiful, but expect sporadic showers. Migratory birds arrive as residents don breeding plumage and prices reduce from peak levels.

Tanzania’s ‘ short dry season ’, January to mid-March, can be hot and humid, particularly at the coast. The wildlife is generally scattered. In the Serengeti, the wildebeest are calving across the short-grass plains of the south.

The frequent downpours of the ‘ long rains ’ last from about mid-March to early June. Some safari camps close, but lower prices and fewer visitors do attract the cognoscenti.

Click on the months below for more detail, see Tanzania’s historical climate data and talk to us about recent variations!

Tanzania in January

January usually marks the start of the short dry season, although the exact timings of this are a little unpredictable. You can expect clear blue skies and sunshine, if the short rains have stopped, and the temperatures will be building. The short dry season is a little less pronounced in Southern Tanzania, and so it can still be wet in these areas. It is an interesting time for avians as resident birds go into breeding plumage and migrant species can be present. Once the New Year busy period has quietened down, January can offer great value and quieter parks, although the weather can be variable, and in the Selous and Ruaha the wildlife is more dispersed.

  • Variable weather: clear & dry or cloudy with some rain.
  • Occasional thunderstorms may occur.
  • A good time of year for birding as and many migrant species are around
  • The wildebeest migration is gathering in the southern Serengeti.
  • Busy in early January, quietening down through the month.

A good time to visit, with pros & cons

Weather in January

Tanzania in February

February is during the short dry season and is one of the hottest months in Tanzania, with temperatures reaching around 33°Celsius. This can be a good time to visit, as some areas of the Northern Circuit are comparatively quieter than during the European summer months, and lodge rates are also a little lower. The wildebeest will typically be on the southern plains of the Serengeti for their calving season, which tends to occur in a 2-3 week window in early-mid February – although this does vary year on year. This is also a particularly rewarding time for birdlife, as northern hemisphere migrants join the resident species.

  • Hot and dry weather.
  • Wildebeest migration calving on Serengeti’s southern plains.
  • Ngorongoro Crater and southern Serengeti busy for the migration.
  • Selous and Ruaha are typically quiet at this time.
  • The parks are likely to be lush and green, leading to pretty landscape

A very good time to visit

Weather in February

Tanzania in March

The heavier ‘long rains’ start in earnest in March although exactly when varies year on year. With no need to stay close to permanent water sources, migratory wildlife disperses, and so game viewing starts to become more challenging. This is most prominently seen in Tarangire National Park. The wildebeest migration may still be calving, or have moved on into the central regions of the Serengeti. Many of the camps in the southern parks close mid March and mobile tented camps in the Serengeti will wind down towards the end of the month in order to move location or carry out refurbishments, ready for the new tourist season.

  • Hot with building humidity, before the rains begin at some point.
  • Wildlife viewing is variable depending on the start of the rains.
  • Parks are quiet and rates are low.
  • Not great for southern or western Tanzania.
  • March can be a good time for birding, with many migrant species.

Weather in March

Tanzania in April

April is in the middle of the long rainy season and is the wettest month, with on average 250mm of rain. Temperatures are fairly high and humid in comparison to the rest of the year. Expect the bush to be lush and flowering, and alive with insects, birds and smaller animals. It is however also dense, allowing wildlife to hide, which in turn makes game viewing harder. This is a very quiet time in terms of visitor numbers. Many of the tented camps are closed in April, however the larger lodges remain open. The rates are significantly cheaper, and so if you are willing to work harder to spot the bigger game, some accommodation bargains can be had.

  • Heavy rain expected, with impressive thunderstorms and lightning.
  • Many camps closed and roads impassable due to ground conditions.
  • Rates are at their lowest all year round, with very few other tourists
  • Places that are open are green and vibrant, wildlife more dispersed.

This is not a great time to visit

Weather in April

Tanzania in May

As Tanzania is close to the equator there is no dramatic difference in climate throughout the year, but temperatures do start to drop a little in May. The rains are likely to still be present, although potentially clearing towards the end of the month. Visitor numbers and lodge rates are still low. The wildebeest migration is making its way through the western regions of the Serengeti, crossing the Grumeti River. Virtually all camps in southern Tanzania remain closed, and many of the roads and tracks in the Selous become impassable.

  • Heavy rains and storms are likely, this can create some dramatic skies
  • Blissfully quiet in northern Tanzania, and a good time to avoid crowds
  • The parks are likely to look lush and green, with long grass.
  • Wildlife is likely to be more dispersed, with fewer sightings.
  • The low prices make safaris much more affordable at this time.

Weather in May

Tanzania in June

The rains come to an end at some point during the month and migratory wildlife begins to be drawn back to perennial water sources as the land starts to dry up. It’s likely that the parks will still be quite green and the grass high though, so walking and fly-camping may be unlikely. This marks the start of the season with camps reopening, but prices are still more affordable than the subsequent months. The migration may still be in the Western Corridor, or on the move northwards towards the Mara River. Western Tanzania presents more challenging conditions for chimpanzee trekking in Mahale National Park, as the chimps are higher in the mountains.

  • A transitory time for the migration – moving from west to north.
  • The parks may still be quite green, and grasses high.
  • Wildlife may be dispersed still.
  • Relatively low visitor numbers and good value, shoulder season prices.

Weather in June

Tanzania in July

July is considered to be the start of the peak season, with no rainfall expected and pleasant daytime temperatures. As the parks dry, the wildlife congregates in fewer areas, grass is eaten and trampled by the migration, and game viewing gets better and better. The wildebeest are typically arriving in the northern Serengeti, ready to begin their period of crossings of the Mara River. In the Selous and Ruaha wildlife sightings can be fantastic, with animals gathering around the lakes and rivers. Great conditions and school holidays mean the parks are at their busiest, with Ngorongoro and the Serengeti particularly crowded.

  • Dry and warm daytimes, chilly and windy in the mornings and evenings.
  • Great wildlife viewing, as water sources diminish.
  • The most popular time of year with very high visitor numbers.
  • Prices are at their highest due to the great conditions on the ground.
  • To avoid the crowds consider Tanzania’s southern parks.

Fantastic: the very best time to visit

Weather in July

Tanzania in August

August is the middle of the long dry season, with clear skies and sunny weather. You can expect some cooler weather at night and first thing in the morning. Remember to pack layered clothing, so you can wrap up warm on your early morning game drives, but remain comfortable as it heats up throughout the day. August is a very popular time to visit, so accommodation prices are at their highest and advanced booking is necessary. It can get noticeably busier in some of the northern parks – in particular the Ngorongoro Crater and northern Serengeti, as visitors flock to the area in hope of witnessing an exciting migration river crossing.

  • Dry and warm daytimes, chilly in the early mornings and evenings.
  • General wildlife viewing should be excellent.
  • An exciting time of year for the wildebeest migration.
  • Certain areas will be very busy and camps fill up fast.
  • Great wildlife sightings in the Selous and Ruaha, and fewer people.

Weather in August

Tanzania in September

September can be an excellent time of year to visit Tanzania. As the parks continue to dry up the wildlife becomes increasingly reliant on the remaining water sources, leading to high densities of animals. Whilst early September can be busy, with fewer families traveling at this time the parks typically become quieter as the month goes on. You are still likely to see the wildebeest migration in the northern Serengeti, with river crossings occurring on a regular basis. Tanzania’s southern parks are also fantastic at this time of year, generally receiving far fewer visitors than the north, and wildlife sightings can be great. Prices remain high and the weather generally remains good.

  • Wildlife viewing in September can be fantastic.
  • Whilst still fairly busy, often the parks are typically a little quiet
  • The parks will start to become very dry, with little new vegetation
  • Cooler mornings and evenings, warming up during the day.
  • Prices remain high.

Weather in September

Tanzania in October

At the tail end of the dry season, the wildlife should be the easiest to spot, although photographers should be aware that it can be a bit dusty at this time of year, as there has been no rain for several months. Great general wildlife viewing throughout as animals are attracted to remaining sources of water. Elephant numbers are particularly high at this time in Tarangire, and Mahale and Katavi are especially rewarding with frequent wildlife sightings close to camp. There is a chance of rainfall towards the end of the month, if the short rains commence. While prices remain high, visitors numbers are significantly lower than in July-August.

  • Mostly dry and temperatures comfortably warm, with the chance of storm
  • Great game viewing although the landscape can be a bit barren.
  • Much lower visitor numbers than the earlier months.

Weather in October

Tanzania in November

In November you can expect the start of the short rains, although the start date varies every year. The rains are highly localised, and are much lighter and more unpredictable than the long rains that occur earlier in the year. These should not really interfere with your safari – as the game viewing at this time is still good - but you should pack a waterproof jacket and be prepared for some short rain showers! The majority of tented camps remain open, but some of the mobile camps in Northern Tanzania will close for the latter half on the month. Given the seasonality, camps are charging shoulder season rates so there are often some bargains to be had. Early November can offer great value for money and the weather conditions are likely to be comparable to late October.

  • Parks are comparatively quiet and prices at the lower end.
  • Some camps will close towards the end of the month for maintenance.
  • Good wildlife sightings, but animals will disperse when rain starts
  • The wildebeest migration is on the move and the location unpredictable

Weather in November

Tanzania in December

December is also during the short rainy period, but this does not stop Tanzania being a popular destination to spend the festive period. Be aware that many of the lodges book up early, and charge peak rates over this time. Advanced booking is essential over this period, especially if travelling in larger family groups. Travelling in December outside of the festive period allows travellers to make use of excellent shoulder season rates. Temperatures are pleasant with the averages of 27Celsius, although there is the chance of intermittent thunderstorms.

  • Variable weather:clear & dry or cloudy with some rain and thunderstorm
  • Good general game viewing in parks with low seasonality - Serengeti.
  • Very quiet early in the month, becoming exceptionally busy.
  • Prices reflect this – great value rising to the highest they are.
  • The wildlife in southern Tanzania is more dispersed.

Maps of the main regions for a Tanzania safari

Two different maps can help you to understand Tanzania:The GOOGLE MAP shows Tanzania's remarkable landscape, spanning 900,000km2 from vast grasslands to its extensive coastline, whilst our REFERENCE MAP clearly outlines the national parks.

In northern Tanzania , the remarkable wildlife sanctuary of the Ngorongoro Crater rises beside a huge crack in the earth’s crust, the Rift Valley Escarpment, which splits the landscape and bounds the soda-lakes of Lake Manyara and Lake Natron . Nearby, at Olduvai Gorge , the same geology protects some of the earliest hominin fossils ever discovered.

Southern Tanzania ’s two main parks are far apart. The flat Nyerere National Park , dominated by many waterways of the mighty Rufiji River, contrasts with the huge, rolling plateau of Ruaha National Park .

More remote still, in western Tanzania , lie the plains of Katavi National Park and the mountainous sloes of the tropical forests in Mahale Mountains , on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Off Tanzania’s tropical Indian Ocean coastline lie the ‘spice islands’ of Zanzibar and Pemba ; the laid-back Mafia Island , and many tiny satellites, like the private islands of Fanjove , Chumbe and Mnemba .

Life enhanced

Award winning camps. Safaris that change lives.

At Nomad our aim is simple, but ambitious. To harness the power of our award winning safaris in Tanzania to create life-enhancing opportunities wherever possible. For our clients, this is the promise of a safari with Nomad. That promise extends to our people and the communities in the remote places we operate, where talent is everywhere, but opportunity is thin on the ground.

Whether inspiring dynamic careers or supporting local suppliers, using our camps for medical outreach or funding free school meals, we know our business has the power to improve lives.

And it’s this that drives everything we do at Nomad.

Northern Tanzania

Our northern safaris will take you deep into the epic wilderness of Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, off the tourist trail, into extraordinary wildlife areas not to be missed.

Western Tanzania

A safari in Tanzania of extraordinary contrasts. Two of the most iconic parks in Africa the remote Katavi and our chimpanzee cousins in Mahale.

Southern Tanzania

This is all about experience. A Tanzania safari spent in the game rich plains of Ruaha and the endless wilderness of Nyerere, the south is hard to beat.

Our safaris in Tanzania

We’ve always had an enduring obsession with Tanzania’s wild places and our promise remains, giving you a truly original and exhilarating safari experience.

Nomad people

Nomad is our people. Many of us have been together from the beginning. Our family of staff is core to our success, and we are incredibly fortunate to have such a special bunch at Nomad.

A string of camps in some of the wildest places on the planet. A front row seat to the best wildlife in Africa. Backstage is the engine room for opportunity.

Standing proud above the plains, Lamai brings a Serengeti safari a different perspective.

Lamai Private

Lamai’s little sister, exclusively for private groups. Our private camp comes with all the appeal and flair of our main camp, plus the benefit of privacy for you and yours.

Mkombe's House

The only self-contained private house in the Serengeti wilderness.

Serengeti Safari Camp

Migration chasing mobile camp and a canvas home from home.

Our wild and elemental spot in the north-west edge of the Crater rim.

Entamanu Private

Entamanu Private is much more than a great vantage point from which to go to the Crater, this is a place to slowdown, breathe and feel Ngorongoro’s rhythms under your feet.

A light-footed bush camp hidden away in the heart of Tarangire.

A classic expeditionary camp in a million acres of animals.

Our famous jungle-chic lodge where we live and breathe chimpanzees.

Your very own private hideaway in the heart of Nyerere.

Sand Rivers

A handsome light-filled lodge with wide-screen views across the Rufiji River.

Our light-touch bush camp in Ruaha’s landscape of giants.

10 Best Resorts And Safari Camps In Tanzania

Tanzania is an extraordinary mix of vast open plains stocked with great game and a land of spices, souks, pristine beaches and bazaars. In terms of accommodation, there are so many wonderful places to stay in Tanzania, but here are just a few of our favourite luxury resorts and safari camps that you should consider including for your next holiday to Tanzania.

1. Singita Sasakwa, Serengeti

Occupying a prime location in the Grumeti Game Reserve overlooking the endless plains of the Serengeti, Singita Sasakwa Lodge is a spectacular base for your safari. Luxury is around every corner here, within the spacious cottages with their own private pools, the spacious manor house and on the veranda overlooking the plains. You can be assured of the very best service and guides, coupled with memorable meals making a truly incredible safari experience.

2. The Palms, Zanzibar

Located on one of the best beaches in the world, Bwejuu, The Palms is a true Robinson Crusoe experience. White sand, deep blue sea, constant sunshine, tropical gardens, private thatched bandas on the beach and just six luxury villas, each with their own large verandah, butler and private plunge pool – this is what makes The Palms so special. It’s a hedonistic haven for those wishing to relax and recharge after the exertions of a safari.

3. The Highlands, Ngorongoro

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is about much more than the famous, eponymous crater and at The Highlands you can explore more of this region than is usually possible from other camps. The accommodation is in uniquely designed dome-shaped suites with large glass fronts to reveal the spectacular views.  It can get cold at this high-altitude camp and a wood-burning stove keeps the suite cosy. A truly one of a kind property.

4. Azura Selous, Selous Game Reserve

In a remote part of the Selous, Africa's largest game reserve, Azura Selous is located far from most of the reserve's lodges providing an exclusive safari experience in this beautiful, wild piece of Africa. The lodge itself is a haven of peace and tranquillity overlooking the rapids of the Ruaha River. Relax by the infinity pool or in your supremely comfortable and private tented villa, soaking in your plunge pool with a cold drink, revelling in the natural beauty of the African wilderness.

5. &Beyond Mnemba Island Lodge, Zanzibar

An exquisite island paradise off the north east tip of Zanzibar, &Beyond Mnemba Island Lodge is regarded as one of the best beach destinations in the world. Ten luxury bandas dot the perfect white coral sand beach while traditional Zanzibar beach beds wait on the sand. Undoubtedly expensive but everything is included in the cost, from cutting-edge food and laundry to all scuba diving.

6. Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, Serengeti

Visiting the Serengeti does not have to be an under canvas experience and at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge one can enjoy the excellent game viewing in the central Seronera area and then return to the luxuries and modern comforts at the lodge. The lodge caters very well for both couples and families and the first class facilities include a spa with six free-standing treatment pavilions, a fitness centre, educational discovery centre, kids club and an infinity edge swimming pool.

7. Ras Kutani, Tanzania Mainland Coast

Set on a beautiful beach, Ras Kutani is a barefoot hideaway at which to relax after your safari adventures. Accommodation is in nine thatched beach cottages all with ocean views and a verandah complete with hammock for those lazy moments. The four suites offer more privacy located as they are on the hillside amongst the trees and with views down to the ocean and feature private plunge pools. The two bedroom Hill House is perfect for families and is set on a hill with wonderful sea views.

8. &Beyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge, Manyara

From the acclaimed &Beyond stable, &Beyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge is the only lodge actually located within the Lake Manyara National Park. Accommodation consists of lofty tree houses with private verandahs and large windows that open up to the lush forest, welcoming in the sights and sounds of the African bush. The spacious bedrooms and sitting rooms float in a sea of green, opening up onto a leafy canopy. Even a soak in the tree houses' large, free-standing tubs offer a panoramic view, with open air showers behind simple bamboo screens. A truly magical experience.

9. Sand River Selous, Selous Game Reserve

One of the original and arguably still the finest safari lodge in the remote Selous Game Reserve, Sand Rivers Selous offers a wonderfully varied safari experience. 8 open fronted rooms look out onto the river making them an ideal spot to pass an afternoon between safari activities. The variety of wildlife is what draws many people to stay here and with a variety of ways to view it, guests are assured of a truly unique safari experience.

10. Tarangire Treetops, Tarangire

Tarangire Treetops effortlessly blends the luxuries of a modern safari with the almost childlike nostalgia of a treehouse and the sense of adventure that comes with sleeping up in the tree canopy. The rooms are enormous and have their own private decking areas at the front which are a very popular spot to relax and while away an afternoon, perhaps enjoying some ad-hoc game viewing in the process. One of the best safari lodges in Tanzania and would grace any itinerary around the famed Northern Circuit.

OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA

Atzaró Okavango Camp

The newest member of the African Bush Camps portfolio, Atzaró Okavango Camp has debuted as a premier option in the heart of the Okavango Delta for those looking for a more water-focused experience. Guests arrive by helicopter and settle into a gorgeously designed lodge complete with a wellness spa, fully equipped gym and 20-meter pool. Each tent has air conditioning and private plunge pools, perfect for Botswana’s hotter months, as well as WiFi for those who prefer to stay connected while in the bush. —  Rose Taylor, Indagare’s Senior Director of African Safari

MABABE, BOTSWANA

Wilderness Mokete

Located in the Mababe Depression between two of Botswana’s iconic national parks, Wilderness’s newest camp, Mokete , offers a thrilling and some might say pioneering safari experience for those hungry for predator-prey action (the area is incredibly wildlife-rich), with a modern tented camp experience featuring large rooms complete with retractable roofs, so you can really let the bush in during the day or stargaze at night. —  Rose Taylor, Indagare’s Senior Director of African Safari

GRUMETI RESERVE, TANZANIA

Singita Milele

The Singita lodges are some of Indagare members' most favorite in Tanzania—from Sabora to Sasakwa —so the arrival of a new baby to the Grumeti Reserve group is exciting news, indeed. Designed as a private, full-takeover villa, Singita Milele offers five individual suites (each named for the area's top species: a "Journey" of giraffes, a "Pride" of lions, a "Coalition" of cheetahs, a "Dazzle" of zebras and a "Crash" of rhinos), to accommodate ten guests total (with connection options for families with children). Each suite is equipped with sprawling outdoor decks, private hot tubs and outdoor showers with views over the savannah. Lodge highlights include a boma, infinity pool and movie room—while days here will be spent on private game drives and bush walks, and enjoying wellness treatments and wine cellar tastings. MOREMI GAME RESERVE, BOTSWANA

Opened in May, this new Natural Selection camp is now the highest-end option in the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana, which is often referred to as the "Garden of Eden". Born out of a partnership with Chief Tawana Moremi, the paramount chief of the Batawana tribe, this lodge aims to protect the land and provide opportunities for its local people. Tawana is located in an area of the reserve with beautiful, wide open spaces that are teeming with animals—from red lechwe to zebras and elephants. The camp’s eight suites, including three family suites, are very spacious and comfortable. The property has a gym, lap pool and excellent culinary program, and it is known for its outstanding guide team. —  Rose Taylor, Indagare’s Senior Director of African Safari

DAMARALAND, NAMIBIA

Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp

In the best place to see and track one of Africa’s largest free-ranging populations of critically endangered black rhino in Namibia, this new camp from Wilderness in Damaraland will feature six tents, including one family unit. Guests are offered the exclusive opportunity to track the black rhino with monitors from Wilderness’ on-site conservation partner, Save the Rhino Trust (SRT) Namibia. The area is also home to other large mammals like desert-adapted elephants, zebra, spotted hyena—and oryx and springbok. Lions and leopards can be seen occasionally, and there is prolific and diverse bird life. —  Rose Taylor, Indagare’s Senior Director of African Safari

MAASAI MARA, KENYA

Mara Toto Tree Camp

This summer, Dereck and Beverly Joubert's Great Plains Conservation group has added a new-ish camp to its collection in Kenya's Mara North Conservancy and the Maasai Mara Reserve (which currently includes Mara Plains , Mara Nyika and Mara Expedition Camp ). To creatively address annual flooding that happens in their existing Toto campsite, the new lodge now features four treehouse-style suites—offering adventurous travelers a unique perspective over one of Africa's most iconic safari landscapes. Reports Dereck Joubert: "In March, when [we] were doing guide training in camp, the most extraordinary example of excellent guiding happened right in front of me. [Our guides] were walking each night to follow something odd moving through the canopy. They finally took me to see what was at first, a small bottom, way up in the trees. It was a rare nesting of melanistic bushbabies near camp (possibly even a new species). Certainly, the first I had ever seen. So, as we build, we [are] sensitive to this nest and their unique local population, keen to get to their eye level in time." He adds: "Keeping our feet dry does not mean it will be a dry camp, so Mary, our waitress and mix-master, has suggested a Gin and Toto signature cocktail to celebrate. Bottoms up!" —  Elizabeth Harvey, Senior Editor

How To: Indagare Safari

VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, RWANDA

Wilderness Bisate Reserve

Wilderness's Bisate Lodge was a game-changer for travelers to Rwanda when it opened in 2017. And this coming fall, the brand will unveil a second property at the edge of Volcanoes National Park, the home of the silverback gorillas. Bisate Reserve will be even more intimate and private than the lodge, with just four, larger suites (instead of six—and two can be connected), with interiors by Caline Williams Wynn; the same architect who designed Bisate Lodge has also envisioned the Reserve. The suites will be similarly set into the hills, with jaw-dropping views of the surrounding volcanoes. Suites promise to be even more luxe, with fireplaces, outdoor hot tubs, private dining lounges and sprawling bathrooms for in-room spa treatments. Guests will also be able to continue supporting Wilderness Safaris's environmental and community projects when they stay at Bisate Reserve, with a focus on reforestation and protecting local biodiversity—especially the gorillas. The Standout: Unlike other lodges, Bisate Reserve will accept children from the age of six; childcare services are available on-property on a complimentary basis for little travelers who are too young to go trekking. Expected opening: September 2024 —  Elizabeth Harvey, Senior Editor

SERENGETI, TANZANIA

Singita Kilima

On a verdant hillside overlooking the plains of the Serengeti, surrounded by ancient trees, Kilima is the latest private villa project from Singita. This exclusive retreat, which can accommodate up to ten guests across five unique suites (two with their own private heated pools), is focused on serenity, seclusion and connection with nature, with a sophisticated, soothing design aesthetic. Ideal for a group of friends or multi-generational family, Kilima also offers communal spaces like an infinity pool and viewing decks, a fitness center and a media lounge—with a program of private game drives across the 350,000-acre Grumeti Reserve and personalized experiences like tracking the Great Migration, enjoying wellness treatments and meals prepared by a private chef, bush walks and so much more. Expected opening: October 2024 —  Elizabeth Harvey, Senior Editor

MAHE ISLAND, SEYCHELLES

Cheval Blanc Seychelles

The LVMH group's most exclusive hospitality arm, Cheval Blanc, will add a sixth property to its portfolio (which currently includes maisons in Paris , Courchevel , St. Tropez , St. Barth's and the Maldives ), on the island of Mahé in the Seychelles. The resort will be designed by Jean-Michel Gathy, and there will be 52 villas, each with its own private swimming pool; other amenities include a signature Guerlain spa. Expected opening: Fall 2024 —  Elizabeth Harvey, Senior Editor

From flooded Okavango lagoons to rolling Serengeti savannahs, go wild for our can’t miss safari spots

9 African safari destinations for wildlife and thrills

From flooded okavango lagoons to rolling serengeti savannahs, go wild for our can’t miss safari spots.

There’s something inherently magical about a safari in Africa . Endless rolling plains filled to the brim with wildebeest, zebra, and antelope, sunsets watching elephants spray each other at waterholes, and the ghoulish laugh of hyenas at night — it’s truly the adventure of a lifetime. But where to go and how to actually see these safari destinations (especially if you’re on a budget)? That’s the age-old question.

a large herd of elephants gather around a large watering hole in Zimbabwe

Where’s best to go on safari in Africa?

If you're 40+ and still game for a basic budget-friendly camping safari, look no further than our new ‘Classic’ African overland tours bringing a beloved grassroots adventure to a fully expanded age group! You can camp out in destinations like Uganda and South Africa with like-minded travellers while tracking mountain gorillas through mist-shrouded forests or searching for the elusive ‘big five’ across open savannahs.

our signature purple G Adventures Lando waits with doors open for overland safari travellers in Africa

Even better, you’ll see it all from our fully refurbished fleet of ‘Lando’ overland adventure vehicles — they’re purple, kitted up with fresh gear, and soon to be your new best friend. But with so many countries to choose from, where do you begin? Fear not, as we’re here to help you narrow it down with nine safari destinations waiting for you to roll up.

South Africa

There are countless reasons to see South Africa — including glugging wine in Stellenbosch’s vineyards, hanging out with pint-sized penguins on Boulders Beach, and hiking up mighty Table Mountain.

a beautiful striped zebra glows in the golden hour sun of South Africa

But arguably this destination’s biggest draw lies in its natural beauty, covering everything from the dramatic rock formations of the Cederberg Wilderness Area to Orange River — South Africa’s longest river. Let’s also not forget its world-class national parks and game reserves, where you can spot the cast of The Lion King in close proximity. Don’t miss a visit to Kruger, the country’s largest wildlife reserve and home to over 150 species of mammals and 500 species of birds.

See South Africa for yourself on: Cape Town to Johannesburg Overland Safari

Now if there’s anywhere on Earth that you’d describe as ‘otherworldly’, it’s most likely Namibia. Home to the world’s oldest desert, The Namib, towering sand dunes, and the largest canyon in Africa, Fish River Canyon — it’s certainly got a flair for the dramatic — and that’s without even mentioning the wildlife-rich salt pans of Etosha National Park.

one giraffe bows its long neck behind another giraffe on the grassy plains in Etosha National Park, Namibia

Beyond the larger land animals you’d expect, Namibia is also known for sightings of lesser-known predators like bat-eared foxes and the tank-like honey badgers — an animal which even lions are known to fear. There are also less than two million people here, mostly based in the capital Windhoek, so chances are you’ll have it largely to yourself.

See Namibia for yourself on: Namibia to Cape Town Overland Safari

It’s easy to see why Botswana is considered one of the best safari destinations in Africa, as it’s home to one of the most impressive wildlife events in the world. When the Okavango Delta floods, it transforms the bone-dry Kalahari into a lush green, lagoon-filled paradise.

guides use long wooden poles to navigate travellers in rustic canoes through reedy Okavango Delta, Botswana

During the floods, animals arrive in the thousands from leviathans like elephants and hippos to flocks of pink flamingos and a deafening chorus of bullfrogs. There’s so much to see that it can be hard to know where to look. One thing you can’t miss though are the vast herds of zebra, wildebeest, and buffalo flocking together in one large mass — followed of course by lions, spotted hyenas, and fearsome Nile crocodiles.

See Botswana for yourself on: Victoria Falls to Windhoek Overland Safari

Given its much-publicized history, Zimbabwe doesn’t often top the list of the most-visited African safari destinations. It’s a real shame as there’s a ton to see and do in this friendly country. Perhaps the biggest draw is the mighty Victoria Falls — a thunderous waterfall measuring over 1,700m (5,577 ft) in length.

the majestic Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is frozen by a long exposure photo during a pink sunset

Forming a natural border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, it’s one of the world’s seven natural wonders and holds the title as the ‘world’s largest sheet of falling water’. There are plenty of activities — from spotting elephants, opting to hurl yourself off a bridge attached to a bungee cord, or hovering over the rising mists in a helicopter.

See Zimbabwe for yourself on: Namibia to Victoria Falls Overland Safari

Lying just over the bridge from Zimbabwe lies Zambia, popular with both adventure-seekers and nature lovers alike. Boasting some of the best national parks in Africa — South Luangwa we’re looking at you — it’s home to countless impressive natural wonders.

a large spotted leopard perches comfortably on a large tree branch in South Luangwa, Zambia

Aside from Victoria Falls — otherwise known as the ‘smoke that thunders’ — there’s the Grade V rapids of the Zambezi beloved by adrenaline junkies wanting to test their mettle. Then there’s the aforementioned South Luangwa — which spans over 9,000km (5,592 mi) in the far eastern reaches of the country. A visit here is a must — dramatic scenery, night drives, seasonal walking tours, and one of the best chances to spot elusive leopards.

See Zambia for yourself on: Zimbabwe to Kenya Overland Safari

Nicknamed the ‘warm heart of Africa’, it’s hard not to fall in love with Malawi. The people are some of the friendliest you’ll find, and the scenery is some of the most dramatic on the continent. The jewel in its crown is arguably Lake Malawi, billed as the ‘Lake of Stars’, that’s dotted with sandy beaches, secluded coves, and tree-covered islets.

It’s an ideal spot to relax and crack an ice-cold Castel beer in between cooling dips or scenic beach walks. If you’re looking for a bit more adventure, the freshwater diving is world famous and there are cracking spots to fish. Just keep looking up though, as you’re likely being circled by hungry fish eagles looking to try their luck!

When it comes to the best safari destinations in Africa, surely Tanzania nears the top. There are 22 different national parks covering 15% of the country, from the well-known Serengeti to the off-the-beaten-track Selous. Add in the kaleidoscopic coral reefs and white sand beaches of Zanzibar to the impressive backdrop of Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro, and you can see why people flock here in droves.

While every nook and cranny is well worth a visit, we'd single out the neighbouring safari destinations of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. The former is famed for the ‘Great Wildlife Migration’ — where over two million wildebeests, zebras, and antelope cross into Kenya’s Maasai Mara and back, chased by predators snapping at their hooves. UNESCO-listed Ngorongoro on the other hand is known for having one of the highest wildlife population densities on earth, where you can spot cheetahs, secretary birds, elephants, and spotted hyenas.

The penultimate safari destination we hit up on our overland Africa tours, Kenya is truly a wildlife-lover’s dream. It’s often considered as the birthplace of the safari, with world-class parks like the Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru drawing people in from all over the globe.

The Mara is all about the drama. Think herds of wildebeest being chased by lions, cheetahs, crocodiles and more in such numbers that it’s hard to imagine. On the other hand, Lake Nakuru is all about the scenery. Set on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, it’s framed by picturesque ridges and acacia woodlands and is home to leopards, elephant herds, and excellent bird watching. There’s more to Kenya though than just safaris — think Indian Ocean beaches lapped by azure waters, tea plantations galore, and one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Africa.

Our final safari destination, Uganda goes way beyond just spotting the ‘big five’. Home to some of the world’s most endearing creatures — the majestic mountain gorilla, chimpanzees, and golden monkeys — it’s the place to get up close and personal with some of our closest relatives.

But if spotting these rare creatures doesn’t quite cut it, there are scenic lakes, Africa’s tallest mountain range, thunderous waterfalls, and some of the best whitewater rafting anywhere in the world. Not to mention the lively capital Kampala, with its buzzy bars and restaurants, a long and intriguing history, and vistas of the shimmering Lake Victoria.

When’s the best time to go on safari in Africa?

This is tricky to answer as some national parks — Kruger comes to mind — are bigger than New Jersey, so it really depends on your location. However, we recommend heading to Kenya and Tanzania during the ‘Great Wildlife Migration’ running from late June and early July through to late September and early October.

Similarly, South Africa, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe experience their dry season from May to October, when wildlife flocks to waterholes so it’s your best chance to see the ‘big five’ and other wildlife species.

For gorilla and chimpanzee trekking in Uganda, try going during June to August and December to February to avoid excessive rainfall. April should definitely be avoided.

What wildlife can I see in Africa?

Africa is famous for its ‘big five’ — lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhino — but it doesn’t stop there. Uganda, the ‘Pearl of Africa’, plays host to half of the world’s population of endangered mountain gorillas, as well as chimpanzees and colobus monkeys.

Depending on where you are, hippos, buffalo, and packs of rare African wild dogs (also known as painted wolves) can be seen. Plus, you’re more than likely to spot herds of impala, wary to avoid spotted hyena, cheetahs, and opportunistic black-backed jackals, as well as troops of baboons, giraffes, elephants, meerkats, and warthogs. The latter two will likely not be singing ‘Hakuna Matata’. Sorry to disappoint!

When it comes to birds, then the statuesque ostrich, marabou stork, or snake-eating secretary bird reign supreme. However, ‘twitchers’ may spot African sacred ibis, lilac-breasted rollers, and malachite kingfishers too.

What do I need to pack for an African safari?

While you may be tempted to channel Meryl Streep in Out of Africa — and by all means, go ahead — you don’t need to dress to the nines on safari. Bear in mind that while the sun blazes during the day, temperatures often plummet at night in the savannah — sometimes to freezing. The key here is layers, layers, layers along with sunscreen, bug spray, and long pants.

Avoid camouflage patterns as they’re banned in many African countries and skip dark colours that attract the tsetse fly whose bite is painful and potentially dangerous. Bring a cap or hat to avoid the heat of the African sun and a scarf to keep the dust out of your mouth. And don’t forget your sunnies — if only to look cool as a cucumber in your pics!
