Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, typically entails four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. At EF Go Ahead Tours, it’s our mission to help as many people as possible see the world, which means welcoming people of all backgrounds and ages on our trips. The majority of our travelers are in their 50s to 60s, but adults of all ages join our tours! You’ll meet like-minded adventurers who share a curiosity about exploring the world. It’s not uncommon for travelers in their late 20s to be on the same tour as travelers in their 70s, and every age in-between.

Our senior bus tours are for travelers who want to see the world, but don’t want to worry about logistics. Our prices include accommodations, on-tour transportation, breakfast daily, select lunches and dinners, your Tour Director, sightseeing tours with local guides, and entrance tickets. • Start with the CDC Destination List . Plug in where you're going to find out what medications and vaccines you need and about any health risks to be aware of.
• Check what your health insurance covers when you're out of the country. Many Medicare supplemental insurance plans do not provide coverage outside of the United States. That's why it's important to purchase travel insurance which provides some much-needed coverage to give you peace of mind.
• Travel insurance will typically cover unexpected events, such as trip cancellations, medical expenses, lost luggage, and emergency incidents associated with travel. Since medical issues are more likely to arise for older travelers, it makes sense to buy travel insurance in case you need to cancel the trip due to a medical problem.

Although most people dream of traveling during retirement, according to Kiplinger, 20 percent of adults over 50 have no retirement savings. Many are worried about juggling the high cost of housing, health, education and food. Therefore, many Americans will need to be creative to fulfill their wanderlust after retirement.

Fun Fact: When it comes to discretionary spending, 85 percent of senior travelers rank travel amongst their top three priorities, according to AARP.

Knowing that travel is important to seniors, but they don't want to break the bank to explore a new city or continent, we've collected the best ways to help you save on travel and vacation costs (including cruises):

• Off-season travel: Since you're probably retired or semi-retired and no longer tied to a time clock, you probably have the flexibility of traveling during off-peak travel times and can take advantage of lower rates. Off-season travel gives you further savings on accommodations and attractions. Three great places to find discount flights are The Flight Deal, Secret Flying, and HolidayPirates.
• Days to fly: Some experts say flights on Tuesday and Wednesday often cost less for domestic trips and flights on Wednesday and Saturday will save you money on international trips.
• Honey browser extension: Honey is a free service (a browser extension) that automatically searches for discounts and coupon codes for you. Adding Honey to your browser can help you get discounts on hotel stays and flights.
• Senior discounts: Many organizations and retailers offer senior discounts, so be sure to inquire about them as you make reservations and search for travel. For example, as you may know, members of AARP can find loads of travel discounts . Check out our guides to AARP flight discounts and AARP hotel discounts for a closer look. AAA and veterans' groups also pass along discounts at hotels, airlines, tour providers, and car rental agencies to their members. Many hotels offer senior discounts . Some airlines might still offer discounts on their senior fares for specific routes.
• The National Park Service: The National Park Service sells an $80 (plus a $10 handling fee) senior pass to those 62 and older that's good for a lifetime. You can also buy an annual pass for $20.
• Hostel stays: Hostels offer dorm-style accommodations at affordable prices. Hostels are most popular with younger travelers, but seniors who enjoyed their time there say they're pretty clean and safe. Some hostels have age limits so be sure to check. Sites to help locate a hostel include Hostels.com, HostelWorld.com, Hosteling International, and Hostel Bookers.
• Airbnb stays: An Airbnb can allow you to stay in someone's home instead of a hotel. Accommodations may be an entire home or someone's spare room. You can find unique accommodations ranging from a castle to an igloo.
• Cruise resources: Kiplinger.com provides articles and tips on cruises. Cruise Sheet and Vacations To Go are great sites for cruise deals and discounts. None of these sites are specifically geared to seniors, but AARP is. Read our guide to AARP cruise discounts for more details.
• Senior travel clubs and groups: Senior travel clubs/groups organize trips for like-minded members, offering vacation packages at great rates. ElderTreks specializes in adventure travel for seniors. (Row Adventures and Walking the World offer adventure travel for active adults, not specifically seniors.) Before joining a senior travel club near you or a major travel group that you've read about, be sure to read their literature and check with the Better Business Bureau.
• Voluntourism: A volunteer vacation allows you to give back in a multitude of ways and learn about various cultures. The trips aren't free, but they are rewarding and provide an economical way to visit a particular area. National and international opportunities are available. Some organizations to check out include Discover Corps and Global Volunteers, which have a range of activities , including varying levels of physical activity that would appeal to seniors. (American Hiking Society caters to physically active individuals. Earthwatch is a fit for those interested in environmental research but may require moderate physical exertion.)
• Educational travel: Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel International) offers thousands of educational adventures for seniors, both nationally and internationally. Each year, 300 scholarships are offered to those who don't have the financial means to participate. Groups do the legwork for you. You travel with fellow seniors and trips are designed with the physical capabilities of older adults in mind. For example, tour operators ensure you have accessible transportation, that the trips proceed at a reasonable pace, and that your senior-friendly hotels are located in safe areas.

Tours are generally led by expert guides steering you toward the best sites to see while at specific locales. Senior travel groups and tours are usually designed so that everyone eats meals together and can socialize. If you're traveling solo, joining a group is a great way to travel with added security and without feeling alone.

Did You Know? If you have special needs, senior travel and tour companies will likely still welcome you. Touch base with the group you plan to travel with to ensure they can accommodate your needs. The Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality (SATH) offers travel tips and access information for travel destinations. They also have a great listing of disability travel websites.

Groups might use travel agencies to buy tickets and accommodations in bulk or make the arrangements themselves. So, they can pass the savings on airfares, hotels, and tours on to you, which is cost effective. Tour planners make arrangements with your age, safety factors, entertainment, and cost-effectiveness in mind — making their expertise very valuable!

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid travelers are connected more by attitude than age. They’re a friendly, open-minded and curious bunch, and many elect to travel solo. Our small groups are a mix of genders and ages between 18 and 70, with like-minded travelers from all over the world.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips (excluding family trips), the minimum age for travelers is 15. An adult must accompany all children under 18.

Our overland trips have a minimum age of 18.

Kiddos younger than 15 can join us on our family trips and Short Break Adventures , but make sure to check each trip for its minimum age.

Most trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a self-assessment form is required for all travelers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes to a minimum. Small groups allow us to remain flexible with itineraries, use public transportation wherever we can and visit communities without intimidating the locals.

Most Intrepid trips run with an intimate group of 12-16 travelers, though they usually average around 10 people.

Our overland trips use purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed in the description of each trip.

Is it okay that I'm travelling alone?

Absolutely! The beauty of the Intrepid style of travel is that many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. Please carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips, you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can, we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical, we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact us for further information on any of our itineraries.

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation, but minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

For travelers who reside within the European Union, Switzerland or the USA, the requirement to purchase travel insurance cannot be compulsory. However, the purchase of travel insurance is still highly recommended, and travelers from these regions who decline travel insurance when traveling outside their home region must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form at the Group Meeting, recognizing personal responsibility for emergency medical and repatriation costs should they arise.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you. 

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please  contact us  so that we can discuss rooming options with you. 

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information. 

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you. 

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average), while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

OAT will not work with your travel agent. You have to make all your own bookings and if there is a problem, you most likely will call and get a different person every time.

I would NOT recommend G Adventures. They cater to a younger crowd, often times the accommodations are like hostels and may be uncomfortable for older people. Also, if one has limited mobility, lots of walking and vehicles driving long distances are not adequate for older people.

Their Global Headquarters are located in Atlanta, Georgia, and they have more than 350 regional and local offices throughout the country to ensure we have a presence in every community.

The American Cancer Society Road To Recovery program provides transportation to and from treatment for people with cancer who do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves.

United States Department of Veteran Affairs (DAV) – Veterans Transportation Service (VTS)

The Department of Veterans Affairs runs programs benefiting veterans and members of their families. It offers education opportunities and rehabilitation services and provides compensation 

payments for disabilities or death related to military service, home loan guaranties, pensions, burials, and health care that includes the services of nursing homes, clinics, and medical centers.

VA recognizes Veterans who are visually impaired , elderly, or immobilized due to disease or disability, and particularly those living in remote and rural areas face challenges traveling to their VA health care appointments. AmeriCorps Seniors – Senior Companion Program

AmeriCorps is a federal agency that funds organizations to make positive impact in communities. To support the placement of AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers in communities, we provide more than $800 million in financial and human resources grants every year. 

These grants provide resources and people power in the form of members and volunteers for organizations across the country.

The Senior Companion program focuses on providing assistance and friendship to older adults who have difficulty with daily living tasks, such as shopping or paying bills. Through this program, AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers keep seniors independent longer and provide respite to family caregivers. Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly

A PACE organization is a non-profit private or public entity that is primarily engaged in providing PACE health care services. 

PACE providers receive monthly Medicare and Medicaid capitation payments for each enrollee. Medicare enrollees who are not eligible for Medicaid pay monthly premiums equal to the Medicaid capitation amount, but no deductibles, coinsurance, or any other type of Medicare or Medicaid cost-sharing.

The Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) benefits include, but are not limited to, all Medicaid and Medicare covered services, including transportation. PACE also includes all other services determined necessary by the health professionals team to improve and maintain an individual’s health.

PACE programs provide services primarily in an adult day health center and are supplemented by in-home and referral services in accordance with the enrollee’s needs.

Angel Flight West – Free Medical Transportation

A small child, ravaged by cancer, needs specialized lifesaving treatment at a hospital 300 miles away. A father, separated from his family by a hurricane, wants desperately to be reunited. 

A domestic-violence survivor longs to start a new life in another city, but cannot afford to leave. These are just a few of the people to whom we offer help and hope.

There’s an angel in the cockpit. The ability to travel easily across the country is something that most of us take for granted. But for those whose lives are in turmoil, the financial, physical, and emotional burdens can make ordinary trips extraordinarily difficult. That’s when they turn to Angel Flight West. Our network of 1,400+ volunteer pilots fly their own planes and pay for all costs out of their own pockets, in order to make these critical journeys.

At our headquarters in Santa Monica, California, our ground team manages the complex system of matching pilots with passengers, coordinating the flights, spreading the word among referral agencies, and continually recruiting new volunteers.

What we do is much like running a small airline, further complicated by the extra care and expense of working with passengers who need our help, their families, as well as medical and hospital personnel. The beneficiaries of the flight – the passengers and their families, the healthcare organizations – pay nothing at all, ever.

Since 1985, we’ve provided more than 127,000 free flights to those in need of life-changing medical care not available in their local communities.

Almost all Miracle Flights patients suffer from medical conditions treated by only a handful of experts located across the country, which makes medical travel a necessity. While insurance may cover actual treatment, it rarely covers the cost of travel.

As a result, many patients go untreated or misdiagnosed, simply because they can’t get to the medical experts who can effectively treat their condition. That’s where Miracle Flights comes in. We alleviate the financial burden of travel so families can focus on treatment and recovery.

We fly everywhere, every time. Our team provides commercial plane tickets to all U.S.-based medical treatment facilities at no cost to families. Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we’re able to fly patients as many times as needed. We’ve been flying some for more than 18 years.

We fly everyone, of every age. We help treat all diseases for patients of every age. Simply put, we’ll fly anyone with a complex medical need who requires distant medical care. We believe in the healing power of family.

Las Vegas might have a reputation for being pretentious, upscale, and glitzy, but if you know where to look, it’s actually a treasure trove of activities perfect for seniors.

Once you look past the high-end casinos, you’ll find that the city offers a ton of attractions that cater to those seeking a more relaxed–yet equally entertaining–experience.

Since shows are both entertaining and easy on the body (unlike some of the more physically demanding activities), you’ll find plenty of them on our list of recommendations.

And don’t forget to take advantage of the senior specials when you’re in town! While many are available on weekdays, you can also score special ticket pricing any day of the week for some of the top attractions, like the Neon Museum , Titanic Exhibit , PopStroke , and more.

Vegas really is an entertainment hotspot for all ages, and with these tips, you’ll be able to enjoy the best of it without missing a beat.

Take advantage of all the senior specials across town

For example,  South Point Hotel and Casino  offers specials for seniors on Mondays . As a senior, you can watch movies at Cinemark Century South Point all day for only $4 each (on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays). You also receive half-off dining and half-off Bingo if you have enough points on your player’s club card.

Stations Casinos  (Red Rock, Green Valley Ranch, Durango, Palace Station, Sunset, Boulder, and Santa Fe) offer even better Senior specials. You’ll want to head to one of these casino hotels on Wednesdays and Thursdays. On Wednesdays , they offer half-price point dining (with points on your card) at most restaurants and $5 movie matinees. On Thursdays , you get 10X points on slots and video poker.

Boyd Gaming  (Aliante, The Orleans, Gold Coast, Suncoast, Sam’s Town, Cannery, California, Fremont, Main Street) honors seniors on Tuesdays as well with an unlimited 10X points multiplier on slots and a free Bingo blue pack.

Play a few games of bingo

Playing at the slot machines and poker tables means losing money way too fast. Bingo, on the other hand, is way more laid back and entertaining (at least it is to us).

Plus, the fact that many of them give you two free drinks with admission means you’re going to have a very fun hour-long session!

Bingo halls in Vegas are not as easy to find as some of the other more popular casino games, but if you know where to look, there are some great opportunities to have fun with your friends and win some big money.

The piano players are insanely talented, making every song a crowd-pleaser. And you know what? Whenever we’ve been here, the crowd’s always SO into it!

It’s free to enjoy, and the drinks won’t break the bank compared to other fancier spots on the Strip.

Oh yeah, if you’re staying somewhere nearby, be sure to come back to catch Big Elvis! This is one of the longest-running and beloved acts of the Piano Bar. Take a musical ride with The King every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at 2 PM, 3:30 PM and 5 PM.

Enjoy  live jazz from 8 PM to 12 AM Sunday to Thursday, and 9 PM to 1 AM Friday and Saturday . The jazz performances are worth the visit alone! From up-close illusions and backgammon to tarot readings, the venue offers a variety of unique entertainments that keep each visit fresh and exciting. Really, no two visits will ever feel the same or feel stale!

You’ll wanna get dressed up a bit for this one, since proper upscale attire is required to enter this tucked-away spot.

Cirque du Soleil: “O” at Bellagio

First off, let me start by saying that “O” by Cirque du Soleil is a sensory masterpiece that’ll leave you breathless.

“O”, phonetically speaking, is the French word for water (spelled “eau”). Inspired by the grace of water and the concept of infinity, the show incorporates world-class divers, synchronized swimmers, and acrobats to create the most surreal and romantic show in all of Vegas.

“O” is almost a rite of passage for Vegas-goers. Even my mom has seen this show at least three times!

Needless to say, “O” is leagues above the majority of shows in Vegas — as with all Cirque du Soleil shows , it’s all about the production value. I mean, no other show is going to have a 1.5 million-gallon pool on stage! 

Be prepared to splurge though. This is Las Vegas’ most premium (and priciest) show.

Awakening at Wynn

Okay, we said a lot of good things about “O”, but there’s actually one show we love more than “O”. That’s Awakening .

As Wynn’s newest show , Awakening has already wowed massive audiences with its combination of dramatic choreography, fantastical creatures, original musical score, and narration by none other than Anthony Hopkins.

Expect quite the variety show — there’s dancing, graceful aerialist acts, acrobatics, magic, drama, comedy, singing, acting, lights/lasers, and crazy good production value, but best of all… amazing costuming.

So much fantasy! So many mermaids — so many lights! The whole thing was absolutely spectacular. If you love fantasy and colors, this show is a must.

After watching it for myself, Awakening is now the #1 show I recommend to all my friends/family.

Michael Jackson ONE

Michael Jackson ONE is a Cirque du Soleil production celebrating the music and dance of the legendary Michael Jackson. And if you know anything about Vegas, you’ll know that Cirque shows have great production value.

This immersive show combines acrobatics, dance, and visual effects to create an experience that transports audiences into Jackson’s world of music videos and iconic performances.

Fans of Michael Jackson will enjoy reliving his timeless hits in a vibrant and dynamic theatrical setting, making it a fitting tribute to the King of Pop’s enduring legacy!

The Fountains of Bellagio

Bellagio’s famous water fountain show is a must for first-timers, no matter your age. This free water show features lights and music (genres include classical, opera, Broadway, and even pop songs) to give visitors a quintessentially Vegas experience.

The fountain show runs every half hour during the day and every 15 minutes in the evening. We recommend catching it in the evening for an extra-wow experience!

Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens

From there, head inside the Bellagio to see the beautiful  Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens , featuring larger-than-life floral displays that change seasonally.

Each season, the talented Horticulture and Engineering teams transform the 14,000-square-foot Botanical Gardens into a showcase of inspiring sights, sounds, scents, and colors!

Depending on when you go, you’ll be able to enjoy a different landscape featuring Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, along with a special display for Lunar New Year.

We’ve seen more of these than we can count on both hands, yet we keep coming back because they’re all so spectacularly pretty.

Take the history tour at Neon Museum

Since 1996, Downtown Las Vegas’  Neon Museum  has collected, preserved, and exhibited retro Las Vegas signs from the 1930’s onward.

What began as a random storage area of defunct neon signs (aka the Neon Boneyard) has grown into a full-fledged museum with more than 200 rescued historic neon signs — all lit up for the public to enjoy!

You can check out the visitor’s center, view the collection within the museum, partake in one of the many special tours taking place throughout the day, or stroll through the boneyard on your own.

During our latest visit with my elderly parents, we saw the Brilliant! Jackpot light show created by artist Craig Winslow that took us through the history of Las Vegas through music and lights. It was very entertaining, but I think they would have actually liked the history tour more.

To be honest, unless they’re big fans of neon lights, older guests will probably be bored without one of the specialty tours.

If you can think of a game, they probably have it — and then some! This spot carries the world’s largest collection of pinball machines, ranging from vintage classics to modern faves.

Play your way through decades of pinball history and experience the charm of these old-timey games while you’re there. You’ll find rows and rows of machines, all ranging from $0.25 to $0.50 per play.

(Don’t be surprised if you find that 30-40% of the pinball machines don’t work. They ARE old as heck, after all.)

Personally, this is one of my favorite parks in all of Nevada — I love it even more than the Grand Canyon!

If you’re up for a hike, make it the 3.2-mile  Fire Wave, White Domes, and Seven Wonders Loop . Just be sure to pack lots of water, lots of sunscreen, and a sunhat! Yes, even in the wintertime.

For those of you who want to get outdoors but can’t hike or walk for long periods of time, one of the best ways to see the desert is on a guided tour by bus.

If you’re open to venturing out further of the Las Vegas area, you’ll be glad to know that there are at least  three  national parks within driving distance from Las Vegas: Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce National Parks.

From Vegas, the closest option is the Grand Canyon West Rim — home to the famous Skywalk glass bridge. There’s also Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim, a different part of the Grand Canyon, home to breathtaking landscapes of the United States’ most recognizable natural monument.
