This comprehensive guide will take you through the most beautiful places and tourist spots in Luzon Island in the Philippines. You will find out the most important information like prices, transportation and how to get there, accommodation or the estimated time needed for visit.
Obsah / Table of Contents
1) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Rice terraces in B anaue & Batad
There is a lot of rice fields in northern Luzon but in Batad and Banaue they are concentrated in one hilly place, where they create an absolutely amazing landscape. The locals call those rice terraces the eighth wonder of the world!
The rice terraces in Batad can be reached only by walk. We definitely recommend visiting this lovely remote mountain village! It is almost unbelievable that there are still inhabited places that you can reach only by foot. We spent there whole 2 days – walking through these amazing rice terraces and taking pictures. According to the locals, rice terraces are a profitable business.
How to get to Banaue & Batad?
A lot of tourists visit only Batad rice terraces as the only place in Luzon. Well, this monumental scenery is absolutely worth it! Although, we recommend combining this trip with Sagada.
Getting from Manila to Banaue
You can book bus tickets from Manila to Banaue and back at 12GO . The journey between Manila and Banaue takes 8-10 hours. You can get a one-way ticket from $ 13 (PHP 450).
There are 3 bus companies, each starting from a different location in Manila:
- Ohayami Transit – corner of Fajardo Street and Lacson Avenue, Sampaloc Manila
- Danga Transit – Florida Cubao Terminal near Kamias
- Coda Lines – Cubao HM Transport Terminal
Getting from Banaue to Batad
Batad is located about 18 km from Banaue. The Jeepney (minibus) to Batad goes regularly only once a day, at 3 PM. The journey takes about 45 minutes and it cost 150 PHP. Jeepney back to Banaue leaves from Batad early in the morning (ask for the exact time at your hostel).
If you miss that Jeepney, you can go by tricycle for 400 PHP (or for 300 PHP only to the saddle – it is 3 more kilometers by foot from there). Alternatively, you can arrange some other taxi, but that is going to be more expensive.
Another option is to take the Jeepney towards Bangaan or Mayoyao and get off at Batad Junction. From here it is 6 km by walk (and it’s uphill).
Sagada – Bontoc – Banaue
If you are arriving from Sagada, you have to get to Bontoc first. There is a regular Jeepney from Sagada to Bontoc (timetable is available at Sagada tourist office). There are shared vans going from Bontoc to Banaue for 150 PHP. They are supposed to have 1-hour interval during the morning, but the driver is waiting for the passengers to fill up the van completely. The journey from Bontoc to Banaue takes about 2 hours.
If you want to get from Sagada to Batad in 1 day, you should leave Sagada early in the morning.
Where to stay in Banaue ?
There are multiple different options in Banaue . We recommend Bogah Homestay with a wonderful view of the rice terraces.
Where to stay in Batad ?
Our favorite place was Ramon’s place . If you search a good value for money pick Batad View Inn and Restaurant . In general, don’t expect anything luxurious (everything is very difficult to bring/carry here). Expect simple facilities, but very welcoming hosts.
You can also choose from many other options, whether at Agoda or Booking .
What should you consider?
In any case, we do not recommend traveling with a suitcase to Batad village. Prepare for a mountain trek to get there, so the suitcase is not an ideal choice. Everything is much easier with a backpack in the Philippines.
Batad – Trip to the Tappiya waterfall
Trek to Tappiya Waterfall is a popular hiking trip from Batad. Narrow paths around the rice terraces with significant descent will bring you to the Tappiya waterfall. The landscape is beautiful and you can extend your trek as you wish by wandering around the beautiful rice terraces.
They will try to offer you to pay for trekking guides at your accommodation, but that is not necessary (GPS and offline map is enough).
Recommended time to stay in Banaue a Batad
We recommend spending at least 2 full days to enjoy the rice terraces and the mountain area of Batad and Banaue, there.
2) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Sagada
Sagada is a magical and very interesting village, which has a lot to offer. Whether you plan to visit the mystical aerial cemetery, so-called Hanging Coffins or stroll to a nearby waterfall, beautiful church, or explore Sagada Caves with a dose of adrenaline speleology!
How to get to Sagada?
From manila to sagada.
If you are heading from Manila directly to Sagada, there is nothing easier than booking your bus online. The journey takes 12 hours and buses depart from Manila in the morning. Prices start at $ 18.
From Baguio to Sagada
You can get to Sagada by GL Trans buses, which leave Baguio every hour from 6:00 AM, the last bus departs at 13:00. Buses depart from the bus terminal: Baguio City. The journey takes 5-6 hours. You can buy tickets on the spot.
After you arrive in Sagada:
The bus stops right in front of the tourist information office, where you have to register and pay the tourism fee (you won’t be able to book any activity without this confirmation).
There is an ATM at the tourist information office.
Accommodation in Sagada
There are some options to choose from in Sagada . We can recommend Agape Log Cabin And Restaurant with a beautiful wooden interior in the heart of the village.
2a) Hanging Coffins in Sagada
A truly mystical place is located nearby the village of Sagada. There is an aerial cemetery high in the rocks called Hanging Coffins. Several dozens of coffins are either hung directly on the rock or simply stacked on top of each other in caves among the rocks. That is the 2,000-year-old Igorot burial tradition.
However, not everyone can be buried in this honor way. There are some criteria:
- A person must be over 80 years old
- Must have children
- His/her children must be married
- And also must have grandchildren
Although the Philippines is a Christian country, this funeral ritual is open to non-Christians as well. The only difference is the type of coffin. Non-Christians are buried in a hollowed tree trunk tied with a rope and placed inside in a fetal position.
Except Hanging Coffins hanging you can see also a lot of coffins in the caves around the trail in Echo Valley. Some coffins are already falling apart.
Why are the hanging coffins hanging?
Our guide told us, that they were simply worried that dogs will eat the corpse. Another reason was that they wanted to be closer to the sky due to the belief that the higher the dead were placed, the greater the chance for their spirits reaching a higher nature in the afterlife. Believe it or not, this tradition is still ongoing, the latest man was buried in 2010.
Hanging Coffins: Entrance fee and guides to Echo Valley
You are required to pay for a local guide and there is no other way to visit Echo Valley without the guide. You can join some other people to pay for one guide together. If you are 4 you will pay around 200-300 PHP per person.
The journey to the Echo Valley begins several dozens of meters behind the Sagada church. You can leave your backpack at the stand where the entrance fee is collected. Your guide is probably going to be someone local. Our guide told us that her grandma was buried high in the rocks in the Echo Valley.
2b) Sagada Caves
Sumaguing-Lumiang Cave is truly impressive creation of mother nature. You can easily book a guided caving tour at the Tourist Center. There are 2 options:
- Shorter Samuguing Cave (tour last approx. 2-2,5 hours), which is quite easy and safe, or:
- Lumiang – Sumaguing Cave connection , which is quite adventurous ( tour last approx. 4-5 hours)
Lumiang-Sumaguing cave connection – Sagada
We decided to take the adventurous option . But we did not expect that much adrenaline… We got headlamps and started climbing down to the bottom of the cave. Some places required nearly acrobatic positions (seriously, nothing for overweight people). Well, most of the rock was really slippery and I don’t even want to know how deep was the abyss we had to climb around with no safety materials. After this excursion, we understood why there were T-shirts with giant letters – “I survived Sagada” in every souvenir shop.
Prepare to get a little wet and dirty, you are going to climb wet rocks, and sometimes you will need to climb up the rope as well. Regarding the safety standards – this would not be allowed in Europe 😀 Be prepared for that and enjoy it!
2c) The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Sagada
Be sure to visit the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin. It is an Anglican church that was built in 1904 by American missionaries. You can visit it on the way to Hanging Coffins.
2d) Bomod-ok and other waterfalls in Sagada
You can take a nice track to the Bomod-ok waterfalls, where you can even swim. Allow about 4-6 hours for the whole trip. There is a possibility to arrange a guide for 500 PHP in the tourist office.
If you want to explore other waterfalls in the area, you can visit Bokong Falls , with a beautiful lagoon where you can swim or another waterfall – Pongas Falls.
Recommended time for Sagada
You will need 2 days to fully enjoy what Sagada offers.
3) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Baguio

3d) Burnham Park
Burnham Park is located in the very center of the city is a nice place to have a walk. You can buy ice cream, fruits, go for a “Swan ride”, rent a bike or even roller-skate in the indoor arena.
We found a good and cheap restaurant there – The Ganza Restaurant.

This could be the most beautiful National Park on Luzon island. There are exactly 123 small islands in this beautiful National Park. You can hire a boat and your captain or boatmen will guide you among these cute islands. It is just a very short distance from the island to the island. There is a very nice view from several Islands! You can even ride a zip-line from one of these Hundred Islands. I must admit that this zip-line was the most beautiful one I’ve ever tried! Actually, there is a wide range of activities . You can make a single day trip or choose the overnight option.
What to expect?
There is a statue of Jesus – almost like in Rio, a cave you can swim in (and also jump into at the high tide), another island has an excellent restaurant, beach, and bridge from one island to another. You can also enjoy a superb zipline with amazing views on Governor’s Island, do a cool snorkeling stop or visit a bamboo ba r, which has a perfect ramp for jumps.
All-day private boat cruise with a personal driver cost around 32 $.
Entrance fee to Hundred Islands National Park – Luzon

Hiring a boat (with boatmen)
Price of the boat depends on its size . You can arrange a group of people to share costs. But consider that the trip is variable and it’s up to your decision (group decision if you are more people there) how much time you spend on each island. 5) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Mt. Pinatubo
Mount Pinatubo is a volcano with a beautiful Crater Lake in the middle. Its colors change every week according to the lake plankton lifecycle. The color can range from turquoise blue, green to brown.
The trip is a great experience from the beginning. There is a wide river, so you will be transported by an army vehicle, which must be assisted by a giant tractor so help it cross the river. You can’t get there without a guide, it is necessary to join an organized tour , which includes transport across the river and to the beginning of the hiking trail.
As soon as you get to the “truck” base, there is going to be a little trip introduction with coffee or tea. Time to get ready to jump on the army vehicle or jeeps and head off. The road is incredibly dusty . You can see the indigenous people of Aeta Tribe on the way. As soon as trucks arrive at the trailhead, it is time to start 7 km hike up. There are toilets at the beginning if you need.
The trail leads through the volcanic landscape and laters through the gorge with the river. There are some simple souvenirs shop and snack bars on the way. There is a beautiful view of Crater Lake at the end. The color of the lake will be a surprise…

6) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Vigan
If you are a fan of Spanish Colonial Architecture , you should definitely visit Vigan. The city is listed at UNESCO World Heritage List. Head off for a walk through the historic city center and stop by the magic singing fountain or the ancient Bantay Tower. You can read more here about the tourist spots in Vigan.
7) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Manila
I would like to give you a friendly advice: Don’t stay in this city longer than you need to. Manila is a city of contrasts. Although you can find there, luxury western cafés, where coffee cost around 3 USD or fast foods like McDonald’s, you can find there also street grills, where a 9-year-old boy is preparing dinner for you and even his younger brother assists him with accepting payments meanwhile their father (who is sitting nearby) is watching them.
You can get across half of the city for 0,15 UDS only. Believe me, it is not a pleasant experience, I was glad I didn’t suffocate with all that smog! If you drive Jeepney or a tricycle, you have no chance to avoid literally black clouds of smoke from all these old vehicles. Every single ecologist would get mad there! Rivers and streets are full of garbage, rubbish, and dirt.
During our travels, we are used to walking around the city according to our GPS and point of interests. It’s NOT the best idea in Manila! During that walk, we found ourselves in places where you realize how lucky you are that you can live somewhere else. We saw children sleeping on the streets or other people who live in the most primitive “shelters” around the street. Chickens and cocks were tunning around the streets in the middle of this ugly city. It was highly inappropriate to take pictures of that scenery, so there is no illustration.
Manila Ocean park
If you have some time, Manila Ocean Park is nice place to visit . You can see the aquariums, parrot, and seal show. The best and cheapest is the Ocean Park Attraction Pass (with the lowest price guarantee).
Accommodation in Manila
The best accessible area near the airport is Pasay . There is also a bus station , from where you can get o buses to explore places in Luzon Island.

10 Things to Do in Luzon, the Philippines
Luzon is the Philippines ’ largest island; home to Manila, the capital ; and the ideal starting point to an endless amount of adventures around the archipelago.
You don’t even have to fly out of Luzon to feel overwhelmed by choices: The ten activities we’ve listed below barely scratch the surface where fun and adventure on the island are concerned. From hiking to a volcanic lake to riding through UNESCO World Heritage Sites, arrange your Philippines itinerary around the activities listed below.
See Manila’s Colonial Side in Intramuros
The Spanish conquistadors knew a good site when they saw one, and the native fort at the mouth of the Pasig River was it. Fort Santiago and the walled city of Intramuros eventually rose from this spot, and stood for centuries as the center for Philippines’ trade and culture.
Intramuros is the oldest part of Manila , and it shows. Devastated by World War II, Intramuros has been under a constant state of reinvention since. A walking tour of the walled city will take you to Fort Santiago, a citadel-turned-museum; the neo-Romanesque Manila Cathedral; and the San Agustin Church , a stone baroque church constructed in the 1600s.
Museums like Fort Santiago, Bahay Tsinoy (dedicated to the Chinese community in the Philippines) and the Destileria Limtuaco Museum (dedicated to the Filipino love of strong drink ), show visitors different facets of Filipino culture.
Getting there: Intramuros is accessible by taxi, bus, jeep, or LRT. Read about getting around Manila, Philippines .
Eat Your Way Through Pampanga’s Food Scene
Mike Aquino
Filipino food will feel strangely familiar to Mexican food fans. As you’ll find in Pampanga, Spanish rule (by way of Mexico) influenced local dishes, later evolving to accommodate local ingredients and cooking techniques.
Thus you get tsokolate , a thick hot chocolate drink laced with crushed peanuts; chicharon , pork rinds fried to a crisp; turones de kasoy , a rice paper-wrapped nougat adapted from the Spanish turron de Alicante ; and plantanillas , a candy made from slow-boiled water buffalo milk.
You’ll experience these and more as you work your way through Pampanga’s scattered towns, many of which were half-buried by the 1991 Pinatubo volcanic eruption. The town of Guagua is buried ten feet deep, whereas Bacolor Church was inundated with 20 feet of mud, though it remains in use today.
Getting there: Pampanga is a two-hour drive north of Manila, and can be accessible by bus or rented car. Use the places mentioned in our Pampanga food tour and Philippines food safari articles as a handy reference. Reliable guides include OuterEater and Mangan Kapampangan.
Ride an ATV up Mount Mayon’s Perfect Cone
Mike Aquino
The pride of the southwestern province of Albay, the active Mount Mayon volcano has one of the world’s most perfect cones, equaling Japan’s Mount Fuji.
You can see Mayon from almost any point in the nearby city of Legazpi. On good days, you can ride an all-terrain vehicle from Legazpi up Mayon itself. Several trails criss-cross the lower slopes, including a short ride that tours the ruins near Cagsawa and a longer one that ends at the “Green Lava Wall."
You can’t go wrong with the six-mile-long “basic trail,” which ends at a lava field . It’s sufficiently challenging for a beginner ATV-rider, with the trail crossing streams and mud-caked fields until you reach the lava field, its rest stop, and helipad.
Getting there: From Manila, you can ride a bus or fly to Legazpi City via Legazpi City Airport. Several reliable providers offer ATV rides from the city to the volcanic slopes, including Your Brother Travel and Tours , Mayon SkyDrive , and Bicol Adventure ATV .
Trek Through the Cordilleras’ Rice Terraces
The rice terraces of Banaue were recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site , and you’ll understand why once you hike through.
The challenging Batad Rice Terraces circuit takes three hours to fully complete. This most breathtakingly beautiful trail will send you through a natural amphitheater into which flat, evenly spaced platforms have been carved out of the slopes.
The terraces change through the seasons, following the local Ifugao’s rice planting schedule. From April to June, the terraces are green from growing rice, and from June to July, the terraces turn yellow as harvest season nears. Visit during December to see the “mirror type” terraces, when the water-filled terraces reflect the blueness of the sky.
Getting There: Ohayami Bus and Coda Lines bus services connect Manila to Banaue. From the Banaue tourism office , arrange for a chartered jeepney to take you to Batad Saddle, where you can begin your trek. Hire a guide at the Batad jump-off point to take you around.
Explore Sagada’s Caves and Culture
Sean White/Design Pics/Getty Images
Despite its remote location in the shadow of the Cordilleras in Northern Luzon, Sagada has become a hot adventure-seeker's getaway to caves, rice terraces, and ancient cultures.
Adventure-minded travelers will love Sagada’s caves. The Sumaguing-Lumiang Cave Connection is the most popular spelunking experience; taking you into Sumaguing Cave, this three-hour trip will lead you through a strenuous gauntlet past some truly gorgeous limestone formations before exiting Lumiang Cave on the other side.
The mountain trails lead through some of the Philippine mountains’ most scenic sites, including Echo Valley, Lake Danum, Bokong Falls, and Bomod-Ok Falls. The culture of the local Igorot community is never far from view, whether you’re visiting the Demang cultural village or seeing the Hanging Coffins, a burial tradition reminiscent of the Toraja in Indonesia .
Getting there: Coda Lines services the only bus service from Manila to Sagada. You can make a side trip to the city of Baguio first, then take a jeepney or van that will take another six hours to get to Sagada.
Go Surfing in La Union & Baler
Gilbert Rondilla Photography/Getty Images
A scene from "Apocalypse Now" was shot in the remote town of Baler, which had seen few foreigners until Francis Ford Coppola set up camp. As local lore has it, the children in the area learned to surf on the boards left behind by the crew, spurring Baler’s transformation into one of the Philippines’ hottest surfing spots.
La Union’s San Juan town has since joined Baler as a top Luzon surfing destination. Both enjoy quick bus access from Manila, both are relatively laid-back towns that cater to world-class surfers, and both are at their best between October and March (schedule your trip to La Union to coincide with their namesake Surfing Break in late October).
The collection of breaks between San Juan and Baler cater to surfers of all abilities. Their sandy bottoms are kind to beginning surfers, and experts can find more challenging reef breaks to test their skills on.
Getting there: Both Baler and San Juan in La Union are accessible by bus from Manila. You can book a seat online at the following portals: PinoyTravel , PHBus , and IwantSeats .
Release Rare Turtles into the Sea at Bataan
Richard Ernest Yap/Getty Images
From November to February, giant sea turtles— pawikan in the local language—lay their eggs on the beaches of Morong, Bataan. The Pawikan Conservation Center, a local community-based program, transfers these eggs to a hatchery to safeguard them from predators and help conserve the endangered turtle species.
Visitors from Manila can help the cause by staying overnight at the Center, then waking up early in the morning to deposit the hatchlings on the beach. Watching these cuties waddle off to sea is the most fun you can have saving an endangered species from extinction.
An entrance fee of 20 Philippine pesos ($0.40) and turtle release fee of 50 Philippine pesos ($1) will be charged.
Getting there: Morong, Bataan is located some four hours’ drive from Manila. You can ride a bus from Cubao in Manila to Balanga, then transfer to a minibus heading to Morong. Once there, take a tricycle to the Center.
Explore Anilao’s Underwater Beauty
jaggarcia/Creative Commons
Anilao was first discovered by foreign divers in the 1980s, and has gone from strength to strength since. Thanks to its proximity to Manila, its comfortable boutique resorts, and its breathtaking dive sites, Anilao has become one of the Philippines’ must-visit dive sites.
During diving season from October to June, scuba divers here can explore the waters around Sombrero Island as they visit coral gardens and their colorful residents: red toothed trigger fish, nudibranch, pufferfish, and sea turtles.
Even non-divers can get in on the fun at Anilao. Try stand-up paddleboarding in the bay’s calm waters, or sun yourself on Sombrero Island’s white-sand beaches. Finally, you can climb a gently sloping trail up Mount Gulugod Baboy that overlooks Balayan Bay.
Getting there: The Jam Liner bus service connects Manila to Batangas City. When you reach the Batangas terminal, you can ride a jeepney to Mabini, which will pass by Anilao Port. From there, tricycles can take you to your chosen Anilao resort.
Visit Pinatubo’s Volcanic Lake
Tarzan9280/Getty Images
The 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo ejected so much ash and sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere that the average global temperature dropped by about one degree F (0.6 degrees C) for 15 months. Pinatubo has since quieted down, with a beautiful crater lake forming in its caldera.
During the Philippines’ dry season (between October and May), tourists can take a combined four-by-four ride and hike from the town of Capas in Tarlac Province or Botolan in Zambales Province.
From either location, off-road-capable transportation will take you to the Pinatubo trailhead. Two hours of hiking will lead you to the scenic caldera, a vibrantly colored lake that shows no sign of its violent origins.
Getting there: Both Capas and Botolan are immediately accessible from Manila by bus (see “Surfing in La Union and Baler” for bus services). The tour is short enough to make a day trip of it, with a same-day return trip to Manila or another destination in Luzon. Camping at Pinatubo may be prearranged.
Alternatively, you can also book tours from Manila; reliable operators include Trekking Pinatubo , OuterEater , and Klook .
Dig Vigan & Taal Towns’ Colonial Vibe
Laurie Noble/Getty Images
Over 300 years of colonization left the Philippines with a heavily Spanish-accented culture. While Mother Spain may be all but forgotten in most places, the old ways still live on in two well-preserved colonial towns: Vigan in Ilocos Sur, and Taal in Batangas. Towering churches, narrow streets, ancient houses, and hyperlocal historical experiences await visitors to either town.
Vigan (recognized as a World Heritage City by UNESCO) offers horse-drawn rides on Calle Crisologo, Ilocano food at Cafe Leona, and tours through old houses like the Syquia Mansion and Padre Burgos’ House . Taal Town offers walking tours through Taal landmarks like the Goco Ancestral Mansion ; the Agoncillo Mansion ; and the Taal Basilica , Southeast Asia’s largest Catholic Church.
For souvenirs, Vigan offers inabel cloth blankets and miniature furniture, whereas Taal sells burda (embroidery), and balisong (butterfly knives).
Getting there: both Vigan and Taal are immediately accessible from Manila by bus (see “Surfing in La Union and Baler” for available bus services). Tours can be arranged at any of the guesthouses in Taal.

15 Best Things to Do in Luzon (the Philippines)
Perhaps the most important island in the Philippines is Luzon. This island is home to the nation’s capitol, Manila , the nation’s major airport, Ninoy Aquino International, and the major economical hubs.
It’s no surprise then to learn that in 2015, Luzon’s massive population ranked it the 4th most populous island in the world and is expected to surpass the population of Great Brittan in just a few years.
While most travelers hit the Manila airport and jump directly on another plane to one of the tourist islands, not many choose the Luzon roads less traveled- but they should. Once you make your way outside of the bustling city of Manila and head to the coast, you’ll find an unexpected world of full of small villages, serene beaches, unexplored jungles, and a handful of islands most travelers have never even heard of. Pepper amongst the natural beauty of Luzon are memorials, museums, and culture throwbacks to the rich history of the Philippines.
Let’s explore the best things to do in Luzon :
1. Batad Rice Terraces
A visit to Batad will be a completely opposite experience to your visit to Manila. Instead of crowded streets and towering skyscrapers, you can expect green rice terraces set in a village with a population that only manages to reach about 1,500 people.
Take a morning hike up the hills and look down into a tapered valley with immaculately designed rice terraces glowing with green vegetation as far as you can see. There are quaint wooden houses scattered around these terraces where the farmers and their families live.
While you’re here, you can stay with a family for a homestay opportunity and hike to a nearby waterfall with a friendly guide. See a side of the Philippines through the eyes of the people who life and thrive here.
2. Ta’al Volcano in Tagaytay City
Just three hours away from Manila is the wondrous city of Tagaytay, home to Ta’al Volcano.
This active volcano has experienced over 30 eruptions in recent history and still puffs out smoke to this day. But that isn’t actually what makes Ta’al so unique.
From the naked eye, you can see that Ta’al Volcano sits in the middle of a lake. Pretty cool. But look a little closer at the mouth of Ta’al Volcano and you’ll see that the mouth holds a lake, as well. Look even closer and you’ll see that the lake inside of the volcano’s mouth has yet another island.
Did you catch all that? You might have to visit for yourself to get the picture.
3. WWII Era Corregidor Island
Just because you don’t have much time to spend on Luzon doesn’t mean that you can’t get out and explore. From Manila, you can take a guided tour to historical island or Corregidor.
This little island was once a notorious battleground during WWII between the Americans, Japanese, and Filipino troops. The conflicts left behind relics and reminders of these trying times that now serve as educational props.
Primarily, this island served as a fortress whose skeleton still remains. You’ll also visit the light hours, military barracks, and hear stories from your guide.
During your tour, you’ll also be treated to some bird watching and a traditional Filipino lunch.
4. Swimming in Pagupud
From Manila, you can reach the northern Luzon town of Pagupud by either flying into Laoag City airport or taking a 12-hour over night bus.
When you reach Pagupud, there will be lots of pristine swimming opportunities waiting to greet you! One of the most beautiful beaches in the area is Maira-ira Beach. This beach is home to the popular Blue Lagoon where turquoise water and shallow depths make for the perfect way to spend the day.
You’ll find plenty of cute little restaurants along the beach that offer a variety of fare and plenty of cold beer.
5. Private Getaway on Magalawa Island
Looking for a luxurious get away near Luzon? Magalawa Island has got what you’re looking for.
This small island is inhabited by just one resort called Armada Resort. This resort came to existence as a way to funnel in just the right amount of tourism to the island and to stimulate its economy.
What does that mean for you? That means that you will be one of the very few guests on this island and will receive top-class service. This also means that the beaches, water, and nature are totally unspoiled and have not been ruined by development!
6. Explore Mt. Mayon in Legazpi
Mayon Volcano National Park is a breathtaking experience full of adventure and exploration.
There are many ways to get up close and personal with Mt. Mayon including a hike around it’s base with bright green plains, rice fields, clean creeks, and rushing rivers. There are tons of trails to hike with varying levels of difficulty and observation decks that give you amazing views of the surrounding valley.
For a more heart-pounding adventure, sign up for an ATV tour or a mountain biking tour with guides who know where to find the best views.
You can also climb up nearby Lignon Hill Nature Park where you can take a 320-meter zip line down with incredible views of the mountain by your side.
7. Hanging Coffins in Sagada
There is a strange tradition in the town of Sagada where instead of burying their coffins in the ground, they attach them to the sides of cliffs where they remain on display forever. This tradition gives off an eerie vampire feel but actually is just a way to get their loved ones closer to heaven.
Outside of this odd attraction, visitors enjoy trekking in the forest, hiking to waterfalls, rappelling and spelunking down cliffs, exploring caves, and enjoying the scenery in this mountainous village. Sagada is certainly an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise.
8. Stay in the Village of Adams
In the northern province of Ilcos Norte lies a small, isolated village called Adams. The village population is just over 1,000 people, almost all of which are farmers and fishermen. These gentle people warmly open their homes to the few tourists that come to visit and provide homestay opportunities.
When you stay in Adams you can look forward to trying their local specialty, tropical wine, and dining on fresh fish raised in their tilapia farm. But the real joy of staying in Adams is the ability to chase waterfalls all day.
There are 18 waterfalls in Adams with beautiful nature hikes and charming hanging bridges to cross on your journey. A local guide will be happy to take you.
9. Spanish Colonial Town of Vigan
Ever wanted to take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage down cobblestone streets between tall Spanish colonial buildings? Now’s your chance- and in the Philippines of all places!
Vigan, located in northern Luzon, used to serve as the unofficial political capitol during the 1950’s Spanish occupation, hence the throwback to Spanish colonial times.
Vigan’s infrastructure has been well preserved from Spanish times. Go shopping in the Mestizo District where you can buy hand-rolled cigars. Visit Plaza Salcedo, the site of the public hanging of a resistance leader or Plaza Burgos to try some Spanish empanadas.
10. Hike around Subic
Located in the Zambales province of Luzon is Subic. This coastal town used to be home to a US Naval base and is still used as a port today. However, that’s not what draws in waves of tourists. Rather, it’s the Pamulaklakin Forest.
Nature lovers come to explore the Pamulaklakin trails where they can adventure through the rainforest along rivers, over rolling green hills and under hundred-year-old trees. The vegetation includes tropical flowers and indigenous plants. Better yet, the trees are filled with singing birds of all kinds that play melodies while you walk.
There are trails for every level including hikes that last 30 minutes and some that can stretch up to 3 hours.
11. Visit Burias Island
One moment you’ll feel like you are on a castaway island with only white sand beaches and crystal clear water at your feet. The next you’ll be in a cozy municipality scattered with guesthouses restaurants, and a bit of souvenir shopping. You really get the best of both worlds on this island off the coast of Luzon.
Burias Island has a couple of smaller islands scattered around which make for a fantastic day of island-hopping. Hire a local boat that will take you to deserted islands with out-of-this-world stunning beaches and strange rock formations.
To get there, use the town of Pasacao as your jumping off point. From there, you’ll take a two-hour boat to Burias Island and your adventure will begin.
12. Art in Island in Manila
Add some dimension to your travel photos- literally.
Art in Island is a 3D art gallery where you make each piece come to life. Get creative while posing on top of a birthday cake, inside the mouth of a shark, or off catching some killer waves on your surfboard. There are tons of scenes to choose from as it is the biggest 3D art gallery in all of Asia with the highest quantity of paintings!
This is a fantastic art museum and gallery for families. Kids find each and every scene to be hilarious and it’s a great opportunity to capture some family-friendly photos for the ages.
13. Eat Traditional Dishes
As Luzon is home to dozens of booming cities with lots of workers that come from all over the country, you can expect to find the best dishes to represent every corner of the Philippines.
In every city you visit, follow the office workers to lunch! You’ll often find food stalls with plastic chairs and tables are the most crowded around noon. These kinds of restaurants often offer authentic dishes out of giant pots. Point to what ever you’d like and fill up your plate with a little bit of everything.
Some traditional dishes to try in the Philippines are deep fried egg rolls called Lumpia, chicken vermicelli noodle soup called Chicken Sotanghon, and for a snack, deep-fried pork skin called Chicaron.
14. Mount Isarog National Park
Imagine if the movie ‘The Lion King’ was set a tropical region with rice fields, rainforests, and mountains instead of the desert. Where you could stand atop a hill and see as far as the sun touches with clear blue skies against emerald green landscape. Mount Isarog National Park is just that gorgeous.
This thriving natural environment is home to plenty of endemic animal species such as the Isarog Shrew rat, the Isarog Cloud Frog, and the ultra-rare Mt. Isarog Forest Skink found only in this region.
Hike, bike, and climb around the national park where you can visit hot springs and cold springs, waterfalls, and get in touch with your wild side.
15. Roam the National Museum in Manila
The history of the Philippines, Luzon Island in particular, is one filled with twists, turns, and shocking upsets that have all contributed to the rich culture it carries today.
At the grand National Museum, you can catch a glimpse into what this country and its people have endured and overcome in the past few centuries.
As you wander from case to case and exhibit to exhibit, you’ll see paintings depicting the Japanese arrival in World War II and learn about the Spanish occupation via artifacts and sculptures.
The National Museum also pays tribute to the beauty of its people and culture via pottery, hand drawn pictures, and more.

The Coolest Things to Do in Luzon — the Largest Island in the Philippines
Chances are, if you’re visiting the Philippines, you’re going to visit their largest island. Here are all the coolest things to do in Luzon!
When you think of the Philippines you’re most likely going to picture turquoise waters, white sand, and the perfect tropical paradise. These beaches you’re thinking of are getting awarded the best beaches in the world and rightfully so.
However, there’s a LOT more to the Philippines than its stunning beaches.
Luzon is the largest island of the Philippines and is home to Manila, the capital metropolis of the country. Where most people leave Luzon, we decided to stay and discover the beauty on this underrated destination for travelers. Personally, we think some of the best places to see in the Philippines are right in Luzon.
We were able to drive around the island, so here are our picks for the best Luzon road trip destinations!
Coolest Things to Do in Luzon
Take in the bustle of manila.
Manila, the country’s capital, has a reputation of being quite… hectic. It has to be some of the worst traffic we’ve ever experienced anywhere in the world. We guess, if you wanted to count it, that’s quite something to do in Manila.
However, we still recommend taking at least a day to enjoy this crazy city. Look around and you’ll see skyscrapers, Spanish colonial buildings, and the world’s largest shopping malls! If you’re overwhelmed at the thought of exploring Manila independently, you can always try this city tour to introduce yourself to the city!
Take a tour of Intramuros
One of the best things to do in Luzon when it comes to Manila is visiting the ancient walled city of Intramuros. Check out Carlos Celdran’s tour dates as he is said to have the best-guided tours with stories in all of Manila. Sadly, we were unable to experience this ourselves since there were no tours for the dates we were in Manila. Be sure to plan ahead!
If Carlos is booked up for your visit, try this bambike tour or this interactive walking tour.
Visit Asia’s Oldest Chinatown in Manila
Another one of the best things to do in Manila is visit Asia’s oldest Chinatown, Binondo! Eat your way through Binondo by yourself or with Old Manila Walks. The tour is three and a half hours long and full of incredible food to try plus check out the local sites. We came with an empty stomach and left so full we felt like we had to be rolled out of the place.
Be sure to also check out the best day trips from Manila.
Hike Taal Volcano in Tagaytay
Just south of Manila on Luzon, Tagaytay is a popular local Luzon road trip destination. Tagaytay’s most famous spot to visit would be the still active Taal Volcano. The volcano is the second most active in the entire country and offers incredible views. It’s easily one of the best places to see in the Philippines!
When we visited we felt like we were in some sort of volcanic inception. It’s actually so confusing I am not even sure we quite understand. Taal Volcano Lake is a volcano that has a caldera that you climb to see another lake. WHAT? Essentially there are two different bodies of water you will be looking at a lake with a volcano with a lake. It makes our heads spin, but take our word for it, it’s beautiful and worth the short climb to the top for panoramic views!
You can make the visit to Taal Volcano as a day trip from Manila , but we advise leaving before the sunrise to beat some of the traffic!
Check out the UNESCO Site of Vigan
If you’re into picturesque, historical things to do in Luzon then visiting Vigan should be at the top of your list. This 16th century UNESCO World Heritage Site attracts tourists to explore the cobblestone streets. Take a horse-drawn carriage to enjoy beautifully preserved Spanish architecture.
Hangout on the historical main street where you can ride a horse carriage, shop for souvenirs, and snack on local foods. Admire the area’s old mansions and beautiful architecture with influences from the Philippines, China, Spain, and Mexico. You won’t find any place like Vigan in all of Asia which is why this is one of our favorite places to visit in the Philippines.
Don’t leave without trying the local empanadas!
Be sure to also check out Plaza Burgos where you can find tons of food. Do not leave Vigan without trying their local empanadas!
If you’re looking for a unique place to stay, check out Hotel Luna in Vigan. The hotel has an art museum inside and is the only hotel of this kind in all of the Philippines.
Explore Laoag
Located in Ilocos Norte, Laoag has been called the best places in the Philippines for sun! But that’s not all Laoag offers there’s so much more making it one of the more underrated things to do in Luzon.
Don’t miss the Sinking Bell Tower!
Check out the gorgeous St. Williams Cathedral with the sinking bell tower. The bell tower has been slowly sinking into the earth’s soil. It has been said that the tower’s door was able to fit a man on a horse in the past, now thanks to the sinking, a person can’t even walk through the door.
Take in the Sand Dunes at La Paz
Located just a few minutes drive out of town are the breathtaking La Paz sand dunes next to the sea. This was one of our favorite Luzon road trip destinations. Hop on a buggy and hold on for dear life as the driver will take you down some crazy hills. If you’re looking for an extra adrenaline rush then take a stab at sand boarding. Be sure to wear shoes or socks with your sandals as climbing back up the hill in that hot sand was torturous!
You will not be able to get around Laoag easily without a car, so either rent a car or hire a driver for the day and explore the beauty in Ilocos Norte.
Don’t miss the local cheese
If you’re a cheese lover like us, look for the local cheese made by Carbau (aka water buffalo). The cheese is light and fresh and can be eaten alone! This was one of our favorite treats to try!
Baguio is a popular and urbanized mountain town on Luzon and one of our picks for best places to see in the Philippines. It offers a lush scenery and cooler temperatures. Enjoy trail riding on horseback, shop the local markets, or just go for the great views.
We loved the panoramic views from the Baguio city market. Stroll the streets of small vendors selling local souvenirs, local delicacies like ube spread, and exotic plants and succulents. Just past the shopping, there’s an incredible view overlooking the mountains of Baguio where people flock to witness the beauty. Watch out for the pink and white ponies around here too.
Make sure to keep your eyes open when driving on Kennon Road for the famous lion head and even a waterfall!
Be sure to try Strawberry Taho from one of the street vendors during your trip to Baguio! It’s a small, sweet cup with soft tofu, tapioca beads, and strawberry pure!
Located not too far from Laoag City in Ilocos Norte is Adams, an even more rural Luzon road trip destination offering a unique and cultural experience. You can hike to the different villages, but be prepared as they can take up to 3 hours to hike!
Hiking is common here as there are 18 different waterfalls and 10 hanging bridges in the area!
If you plan your trip in mid-April then you could catch the Tadek- Bagat Festival featuring the different tribes of Adam’s dances and songs.

A little harder to get to, but well worth the journey is Sagada in the Cordillera Mountains. This area is full of natural beauty and flora and fauna and is one of the most naturally beautiful things to do in Luzon. Behold the beauty of the rice terraces, caves, waterfalls, and lush mountains.
Be sure not to miss the hanging coffins of Echo Valley. Coffins with dead bodies fill the walls of this cliffside offering one of the most unique cemeteries in the world. It is said that this burial ritual still is practiced today even! If that’s not enough for you, you can visit Lumiang Cave where there are hundreds of coffins buried as well!
A lot of the hikes in Sagada are not for the faint of heart and many require a local guide. Be sure to do your research before your trip to make sure you know which hikes are best for you and your fitness abilities. Check out this guide from Our Awesome Planet for all you’ll need to know before planning your trip to Sagada. Sagada is one of the best places to see in the Philippines if you’re looking for an adventure and a different experience.

The usual stopovers are the Mines View Park, The Baguio Cathedral, Burnham Park, The Philippine Military Academy, and Camp John Hay. Getting around the city is by jeep or local taxis. A wide variety of food choices is available all around and you can always find one that will suit your budget. Peak periods are the Christmas season, summer months, and February when the city gets really crowded and a bit expensive. If you time your visit during the off season, you can find lodging for as low as $15/night.
4. La Union
Surfing, anyone? This is what La Union is famous for, especially from the months of October to March when the waves are perfect for surfing particularly in Urbiztondo Beach. But the province offers more than its beaches. There are churches and temples, waterfalls, and good food. There’s also the chance that some beach party will be going on somewhere when you visit. Some resorts charge a minimal fee for surfers and they rent surfboards for around $4/hour. Visitors often choose San Fernando or San Juan as their base and just take public transport to where they want to go. From Manila, bus fare costs about $12 one way on a 4-5 hour trip. An overnight stay is good enough and you can find all sorts of accommodations – from the spartan beach tent at $14 or a hotel room at $19.

They call this town the Jewel of the North because of its beautiful beaches and other natural wonders. Although the Province of Pangasinan has a lot of coastal towns, Bolinao is one of the few that have white sand beaches. Visitors can also visit several waterfalls and cave formations. Other attractions include the Cape Bolinao Lighthouse and the Balingasay River. If you want to take a 1.5-hour river cruise, the fee is about $30 with meals included. The town is known for its milkfish dishes so try one, specifically the charbroiled kind. If you want to stay overnight, there are some very reasonable accommodations available starting at $20/night. Bus fare from Manila to Bolinao is about $9.

Bus fare from Manila is just around $6.
8. Malolos, Bulacan
Malolos is probably one of the relatively undiscovered places in Luzon. By travelling just some 35 kilometres north of Manila, visitors can ‘go back in time’ to the Spanish era in Malolos, Bulacan. This historic town is rich in architecture, culture, and Philippine history. Its most famous landmark, Barasoain Church, is notable not just because of its religious significance but also because it is the site where the First Philippine Congress convened and where several Philippine Presidents took their oaths of office. A museum near the church provides visitors with relics and mementoes that link them to Philippine history. A walk along the streets, particularly in Pariancillo District, would give travellers a glimpse of the heritage houses that serve as a reminder of the affluence of the residents of this town during the Spanish period. Like any other memorable towns in the Philippines, Malolos also boasts of their own delicacies and cuisines but local tourists also come to try the many prawn and crab buffet restaurants here. Bus fare from Manila to this town is just under $2.
9. Puerto Galera
Are you more of a beach buff? Then you can head off to Puerto Galera, a resort island south of Manila. Food is not a problem because there are many places where you can eat or get a take-out. But if you just want to soak in the water or bask in the sun, they won’t cost you anything. The place also comes alive at night if you want to have a nightcap or two. The summer season is peak season here so if you want to come during those months, make your arrangements in advance. You’ll need to shell out around $10 for bus and ferry (one way) and a minimum of $15 for lodging
Places to visit in South Luzon
10. tagaytay city.
Tagaytay is definitely one of the go-to places to visit in South Luzon. It’s just around 65 kilometres from Manila, and is famous for its cool weather, food, and view of Taal Volcano. Locals come here to escape the hot weather of Metro Manila and grab some great bites while marvelling at the volcano that nestles serenely in the middle of the Taal Lake. The main highway bustles with all kinds of restaurants that offer everything from fine dining, fast food, specialty dishes, and street food. Try the burgers made out of mushrooms and the famous bulalo (beef marrow stew) while you’re there. The good thing about it is you can go in the morning, explore the city then go back to Manila in the evening. You can take a bus from Pasay City that will let you off in the centre of Tagaytay. From there, you can ride an electric tricycle or jeepney to wherever you want to go. If you want to stay overnight, you can find some cheap lodging for under $30.
11. Nasugbu, Batangas
After your Tagaytay City adventure, you can visit the next town which is Nasugbu. The place is famous for its beaches but you can also take a side trip to check out some scenic churches. If you’re up for it, you can take a guided mountain hike up Mt. Batulao to get a good view of the province and take some nice photographs. The hike would cost you around $33. Then, you can head off to the town proper by bus or jeep and enjoy the beach. A nice resort room would cost you around $29.
12. Corregidor Island
Do you want to see the spot where General Douglas MacArthur made his escape from the Japanese during World War II? This and other historically significant sites are in Corregidor Island. You can visit the war batteries all over the island that served as the last defense of the Americans against the Japanese during WW II and learn about the accounts before the fall of Bataan. Take a walk inside the Malinta Tunnel, a military installation soldiers built beneath a mountain that withstood thousands of pounds of Japanese bombs during the war. You can get a pre-packaged day tour for around $72 that would include ferry transfers from Manila, a guided tour around the island, entrance fees, buffet lunch, and souvenirs. After that, all you need to do is enjoy the island.
13. Antipolo City, Rizal
Located east of Manila, Antipolo is popular among local travellers because of its high terrain that offers a view of Metro Manila, its attractions, and the local delicacies that abound in the area. You can allocate a full day for this city to visit the many offerings it has. Places of interest are the Hinulugang Taktak waterfalls, the Antipolo Cathedral, the Pinto Art Museum, and Mount Purro Nature Reserve. Antipolo is now home to several malls and hundreds of restaurants so you can take your pick where to eat but be sure to look for those specialty restaurants. Antipolo City is very accessible by public transport from many parts of Metro Manila. Fares in public vans range from $1 to $2 one way.
14. Calamba, Laguna
Calamba City is one of the many historical places in the country that is very near Metro Manila. Bus fare from Manila to Calamba would just be around $2 to $4, depending on the type of bus you choose. Once in the city, you can take the jeepney or tricycle to go around and explore the place. Visit the Rizal Shrine and learn about the country’s national hero Dr. Jose Rizal. Take a tour around the old churches, parks and Mt. Makiling. Stay in Pansol area and enjoy the natural hot springs that come from Mt. Makiling for relaxation and for the water’s healing properties. Of course, one should also try the variety of food that the place offers, especially their famous Buko (coconut) Pie and other sweet delicacies. If you come during summer, you will also find many vendors selling local fruits in season such as mangoes and watermelons. For lodging, you can find a place to stay for as low as $20/night.
These are just some of the many affordable places to visit in Luzon. If you don’t mind sacrificing a few comforts here and there once in a while, a small budget can get you places and give you many beautiful memories of the Philippines’ largest island group.

9. Ditumabo Mother Falls [SEE MAP]
Majestic to behold, Ditumabo Falls gushes forth from up high. The dazzling white of its waters contrasts stunningly against the lush green of the rainforest that lies to either side of it. The impressive waterfall is also known as Mother Falls since it is the largest and grandest in the area.
While the waterfall only reaches about 15 meters in height, its scenic setting makes it a very picturesque place to spend some time, although it can get crowded during the weekends. After hiking for an hour through the jungle to reach the falls, nothing beats bathing in the clear pool that lies at its foot and basking in the fantastic scenery all around you.
8. Minalungao National Park [SEE MAP]
Established in 1967 to protect and preserve the scenic Penaranda River and its surroundings, Minalungao National Park is home to some of the most beautiful and pristine nature in Central Luzon.
As it is promoted as an ecotourism destination by the local government, it should come as no surprise to learn that the national park has a wealth of fantastic outdoor activities for you to enjoy, with hiking, rock climbing, and ziplining all on offer.
In addition to this, you can also go swimming or kayaking on the river – or even rafting and cliff diving if you feel brave enough. While its range of outdoor activities will certainly keep you entertained for days, the scenery on show is just as arresting; the emerald waters of the river are beautifully framed by glimmering limestone formations looming above it.
7. Magalawa Island [SEE MAP]
Lying just off the west coast of Central Luzon and surrounded by the glittering waters of the China Sea, Magalawa Island is a fantastic place to head to if you’re looking for a quiet getaway.
With beautiful white sand beaches lining its shores and gently swaying palm trees wherever you look, Magalawa certainly paints a pretty picture. There’s nothing better than lounging on the beach all day while taking in the stunning scenery.
As it is still quite undeveloped, the island habitat is very untouched. As such, it is ideal for nature lovers, while outdoor enthusiasts will also rejoice at the amazing rafting and snorkeling on offer. In addition to this, taking a scenic boat trip around the island and surrounding waters is simply a must. This is particularly magical at sunset when the waves shimmer and sparkle before your eyes.
6. Monasterio de Tarlac [SEE MAP]
Located atop the appropriately named Mount Resurrection, this incredible monastery is a very popular destination with both locals and tourists alike. Its majestic Jesus Christ statue is the undoubted highlight of what’s on show.
Towering to a height of 30 feet, Christ’s outstretched arms welcome visitors to the Monasterio de Tarlac. From the peaceful gardens surrounding the church, you have some lovely views out over the picturesque Zambales Mountain Range.
While its scenic setting and splendid statue are what many people come for, the interior of the monastery houses a very important relic which is believed to be a remnant of the cross upon which Christ was crucified.
Although the fragment of the True Cross is not all that much to look at, lots of pilgrims come here and venerate the holy site. The monastery’s peaceful mountaintop setting certainly makes it the perfect place for some quiet reflection.
5. Dingalan [SEE MAP]
Lying alongside a delightful bay of the same name, Dingalan is a breathtakingly beautiful part of Central Luzon to visit. The municipality is awash with stunning scenery and landscapes for you to explore. While its wild and rugged coastline is exhilarating to surf or swim along, its interior is equally enchanting. Among its towering mountains, you can find cavernous caves, gushing rivers, and sparkling waterfalls.
As such, it really is an outdoor lover’s dream, and there are loads of lovely beaches to kick back and relax on if you simply want to bask in the magnificent scenery. While there isn’t all that much for you to do in town, its delightful setting amongst the Sierra Madre Mountains and the abundance of nature nearby means that you’ll never get bored.
4. Corregidor Island [SEE MAP]
With lots of interesting historical sights to explore and a wealth of excellent woodland paths and coastal trails for you to hike or cycle along, Corregidor Island is well worth visiting when in Central Luzon.
Due to its strategic location at the entrance to Manila Bay, Corregidor has long been fortified. Many people now visit to see Fort Mills and the various anti-aircraft artillery batteries that were erected to protect the Philippines’s capital during the Second World War.
While the crumbling fortifications, memorials, and WWII sights are what make Corregidor Island one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, its spectacular scenery is also well worth checking out.
3. Pilar [SEE MAP]
Although there is not all that much to see or do in the town of Pilar, there are some interesting historic sights to discover. The municipality itself lies not far away from Bataan National Park and Mount Mariveles, both of which boast some astounding natural wonders.
The main attraction in Pilar is the Mount Samat National Shrine, which was built to honor and remember the brave Filipino and American soldiers who fought in the Second World War. The enormous cross certainly does look impressive.
Besides that, the Flaming Sword shrine and Our Lady of the Pilar Parish Church are the main noteworthy sites to see in town, while the small fishing villages and ports along the coast are also well worth a visit; they are very picturesque with a laidback feel.
2. Mount Pinatubo [SEE MAP]
Simply awe-inspiring to look at, Mount Pinatubo is a must-visit when in Central Luzon. While the majestic mountains and volcanoes that dot the landscape are breathtakingly beautiful, it is the glimmering crater lake that lies at their heart that is the undoubted star of the show.
Hemmed in by towering peaks, the turquoise waters shimmer and gleam beneath the midday sun, and the color of the lake remarkably changes throughout the year, depending on the season.
Formed over millennia, the volcanic region makes for some beautiful hiking. Lots of mountaineers come to Mount Pinatubo to climb its various peaks. One of the most spectacular natural sights in the Philippines, Mount Pinatubo will set your heart racing.
1. Baler [SEE MAP]
Lined by beautiful palm trees and overlooked by majestic mountains off in the distance, the small town of Baler is a very laidback place to visit, and the scenery on show is drop-dead gorgeous.
Famed for its white sand beach and surfing spots that appeared in the iconic film Apocalypse Now, Baler truly is blessed when it comes to its scenic setting. If you’re up for some exploring, the surrounding area has some wonderful beaches and waterfalls.
Despite being founded all the way back in 1609, there aren’t any historical or cultural attractions of note in the town. Most people simply come to kick back and relax on the beach or take to the waves and surf all day in the sun; it’s the perfect destination for sun-worshippers and beach lovers.

15 Must-Visit Destinations in the Philippines
Posted: May 9, 2024 | Last updated: May 9, 2024
The Philippines is a breathtaking archipelago (a group of Islands) with volcanoes, limestone cliffs, crystal clear waters, and rice terraces on mountain slopes. If you want a vacation or an adventure, there are over 7000 islands with fascinating sights to choose from, including tourist spots in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. These 15 places are particularly noteworthy for their historical sites and local delicacies that will make your visit truly worthwhile.
Puerto Princesa Underground River
This UNESCO World Heritage Site has a limestone karst landscape and an underground river stretching over 8 kilometers. The river flows directly into the sea, nourishing diverse plant species. It also houses bats and various bird species. As a tourist destination, this place allows visitors to explore its caverns and enjoy looking at its natural beauty.
Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao Province
The Ifugao people built the Banaue Rice Terraces over 2,000 years ago, and they are now often called the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” The design of this UNESCO World Heritage Site showcases their creativity and skill. They are still actively used for farming, primarily rice and vegetables. Visitors can enjoy the breathtaking view of terraces on the mountainside and local delicacies like traditional smoked meat called “kinuday.”
Tagaytay, Cavite and Taal Volcano, Batangas
These two locations are well-known tourist destinations in the Philippines, famous for their breathtaking scenery and landscapes. Tagaytay, situated in Cavite, has a calm and pleasant climate along with stunning vistas of Taal Lake and the Taal Volcano. This volcano is one of the world’s smallest active volcanoes on an island within a lake.
The Visayas region in the Philippines is the ideal place to visit if you want to attend a vibrant and colorful festival. These festivities showcase the culture and traditions of each province. You can attend the Sandugo Festival or the Dinagyang, Sinulog, and Ati-Atihan Festivals, which are held every January.
Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan
Tourists visit Boracay Island for its stunning white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant nightlife. Many visitors worldwide come here to relax, enjoy water sports, and enjoy the lively atmosphere. It also has a bustling market where you can handpick fresh seafood from the stalls and have chefs cook it the way you like. Boracay is an excellent place if you are looking for a tropical paradise with plenty of activities and beautiful scenery.
Chocolate Hills Carmen, Bohol
The location has around 1,200 cone-shaped hills spread over 50 square kilometers. These hills are named “Chocolate Hills” because their green grass becomes brown during the dry season, making them look like chocolate kisses. This unique landscape is a popular tourist attraction as a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mindanao is the second largest island in the Philippines and a beautiful region with many tourist attractions. Some popular places include Siargao Island, with world-class surfing spots and gorgeous landscapes; Bukidnon, with natural attractions like the Dahilayan Adventure Park; and Surigao del Sur, with the Enchanted River and Tinuy-an Falls.
Davao City, Davao del Sur
This beautiful city has Mount Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines, which attracts hikers and nature enthusiasts. Since Davao is the natural home of the critically endangered Philippine eagle, visitors can watch this majestic bridge up close at the Philippine Eagle Centre. Also, as they snack on durian, they can drop by to tour the Museum or enjoy the manicured gardens at the urban People’s Park.
Camiguin Island, Camiguin Province
Besides hot springs, waterfalls, and coral reefs, this province is famous for its lanzones fruit, which locals celebrate annually during the Lanzones Festival. It has beaches with rich marine life and a laid-back atmosphere for tourists who want a relaxed atmosphere. They can also visit the La Dolce Vita, an Italian-styled restaurant that serves wood-cooked pizzas.
Calle Crisologo, Vigan
This place has well-preserved Spanish colonial-era architecture and streets lined with charming heritage houses and cobblestones. Surprisingly, they still have the traditional horse-drawn carriages known as “kalesas.” Visiting Calle Crisologo allows you to step back in time and experience the rich history and culture of the Philippines. You can browse through the local crafts shops for souvenirs. The best time to visit is the first week of May during the Vigan Festival of the Arts.
Nacpan Beach in El Nido, Palawan
Considering its four-kilometer stretch of cream-colored sand with swaying coconut palm trees lining the shore, this place can easily accommodate hundreds of tourists. Visitors can spread across the expanse of land as they swim, sunbathe, or relax on the beach, enjoying the view of clear waters. Although it was once a secret getaway for a lucky few, many others have discovered its beauty, so it’s now a popular tourist destination.
Kawasan Falls, Cebu
The waters of the Kawasan Falls flow from the Kanlaob River, moving to the Kabukalan Spring and through the Kawasan Gorge before emptying into the Matutinao River and eventually the Tanon Strait. Its largest waterfall is roughly 40 meters high, and visitors can hike up the different tiers. They can also take refreshing dips in the pools, ride a bamboo raft along the river, or have a picnic lunch by the riverbank.
Cloud 9 in Siargao
In 2012, CNNGo ranked Cloud 9 8th out of 50 World’s Best Surfing Spots. It is also the site of the Siargao Cup, an international surfing competition held every September. Even if you’re not a surfer, Cloud 9 has a viewing deck at the top of a three-story structure where you can watch the surfers and marvel at the ocean. The area also has shops, restaurants, and bars where you can relax.
Besides being the largest and most populous island in the Philippines, Luzon is the economic and political center of the nation. Likewise, it is home to Quezon City and Manila, the capital city of the Philippines. This island is one of the places every visitor must see because of its stunning beauty, which includes mountain ranges, volcanoes, beaches, and coral reefs. You can find it north of the Philippine archipelago.
Intramuros and Fort Santiago, Manila
The walled city of Intramuros, Spanish for “within the walls,” was the seat of Spanish colonial power in the Philippines for over 300 years. Miguel Lopez de Legazpi built it in the 16th century, and its rich history has made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Right beside it is Fort Santiago, the former military headquarters where the Spaniards imprisoned national hero Jose Rizal. They have several historical sites, including churches, museums, and early government buildings.

Target ship goes down in South China Sea as allies train to thwart a Philippine invasion

LA PAZ SAND DUNES, Philippines — The sound of artillery shook this adventure tourism mecca on the northwestern coast of Luzon, the country’s main island, Wednesday morning.
American, Philippine and Australian troops pounded a disused oil tanker 10 miles offshore with artillery, rockets, missiles, bombs and machinegun fire.
The demonstration showed what the longtime allies could do in the event of an invasion attempt, Philippine army Lt. Col. Omar Al Assaf said at the dunes.
The ship sinking was the culmination of the annual Balikatan exercise. The training began April 22 and is scheduled to end with a ceremony Friday.

Reporters watched the action unfold on video screens inside a tent overlooking the coast.
An Australian E-7 Wedgetail flew over the target and relayed data to firing units.
A U.S. Air Force AC-130 gunship pounded the target vessel with a 105 mm cannon and 30 mm machinegun.
The barrage included fire from Philippine navy vessels, U.S. and Philippine fighter jets, a Philippine helicopter and 155 mm howitzers in the dunes.
Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who hails from the area where the training took place, observed the event from a command center at an undisclosed location, Philippine military spokesman army Lt. Col. Xerxes Trinidad said at the dunes.
The event showed air, sea and ground assets training to prevent an aggressor landing on Filipino soil, Assaf said after the target ship sank in 1,500 feet of water.

The attacks appeared to find their mark, but a pair of the U.S. Army’s Excalibur 155 mm artillery shells turned out to be duds.
Soldiers detected problems in the electronic signals inside the rounds before they were fired, said Lt. Col. Matt Cahill, commander of 3rd Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment.
Tourist attractions at the dunes, including off-roading and sandboarding, were shut down during the live fire.
However, the mayor of Laoag, the town that surrounds the sand dunes, said operators welcomed the attention that the exercise gives the area.

“I feel that it is important that they do it here,” Michael Marcos Keon said as artillery barked nearby. “Please understand what the Chinese navy is doing — trespassing into our territory, harassing our fishermen, harassing our coast guard. It’s not acceptable.”
Last week, a China coast guard ship with water cannons damaged one of two Philippine coast guard vessels at Scarborough Shoal, a feature inside the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone that’s controlled by Beijing. An escalating number of similar encounters have occurred between the two countries at Second Thomas Shoal, a submerged reef in the South China Sea controlled by Manila.
Filipinos need to send a message to China that they will not be bullied, Keon said, noting that he is a relative of his country’s president.
“We need to do this with our allies, and who are our allies? The United States of America,” he said.
