Frequently Asked Questions about Nashville Hop On Hop Off Trolley Tour

How long is the old town trolley tour if i don’t get on and off at all.

The Old Town Trolley Tour is approximately one hour and 30 minutes if you ride the loop all the way through without hopping off and on.

When do the tours begin?

The tour begins at 9:30 am daily at 201 Broadway (stop #1 ). The last full tour of the day is 4 pm day. Guests taking the 4 pm tour will not be able to use the on/off features. Schedules may vary depending on your starting location, the time of year, day of the week, and any citywide events.

How much knowledge do the conductors have about Nashville?

You will be amazed at how knowledgeable the conductors are and what great storytellers and entertainers they are. The tour conductors undergo a rigorous six-week training program to ensure that their tour is safe, their information is accurate, and their customer service is outstanding.

Are there parking lots near any of the stops?

Parking in Nashville is sometimes a challenge and can be on the expensive side. Still, there are many parking options around the city, including parking garages, parking lots, and city-metered spaces.

Are the tours narrated?

Yes, the tours feature live onboard commentary by your knowledgeable guide / conductor.

Can I get on and off wherever I want?

Yes. This is one of the most unique and enjoyable aspects of a Nashville Old Town Trolley Tour. You can hop off and hop back on at 13 different stops around the city, sightseeing at your own pace.

Where does the trolley stop?

Stops include 201 Broadway, Ryman Auditorium, Music City Walk of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame, Legislative Plaza, Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum, Farmers' Market, Capitol View, Marathon Motor Works, Centennial Park, Hot Chicken, Belmont Mansion, The Gulch, and First Art Museum.

Are food and drinks allowed while on the tour?

Food and drinks are welcome. However, alcoholic beverages are not allowed.

Can the trolleys accommodate an electric scooter?

Electric scooters are allowed where the combined weight of the guest and scooter/wheelchair is less than 600lbs.

Do I have to start at stop #1?

You may start your Old Town Trolley Tour at any of Old Town Trolley Nashville's 13 convenient stops.

Are dogs allowed on the trolleys?

Assistance animals, such as seeing-eye dogs, are the only animals allowed on board the trolleys.

Are the trolleys handicap accessible?

A certain number of trolleys are equipped with hydraulic wheelchair lifts. Please call the number on your e-ticket to arrange the use of these vehicles.

Are the trolleys enclosed?

Old Town Trolleys are open-air vehicles but have plastic “isinglass” windows that can roll up or down depending on the weather conditions.

Does the tour run in inclement weather?

Yes, the tour operates rain or shine, hot or cold, year-round. However, bear in mind that some winter conditions can prohibit safe operation. Occasionally, the tour is forced to close operations for safety.

Are the trolleys heated?

Yes. During the wintertime, heated trolleys are used with glass-enclosed specifically for the colder weather.

Are the trolleys air-conditioned?

The trolleys are open-air vehicles that allow for optimal sightseeing and picture-taking.

How many times can I go through the loop?

You may ride the Old Town Trolley Tour as often as you wish. However, we recommend you get off and on as you go and take advantage of the sights. As the day wears on, many attractions will get increasingly busy, so it’s often best to take advantage of the stops as you go. In addition, you will hear essentially the same information presented each time you go on tour, although presented by each driver with their style and flair.

How often does the trolley pass each stop?

Old Town Trolley Tours of Nashville operates the city’s largest fleet of sightseeing vehicles, allowing them to pick up and drop off more frequently than any other trolley company. The frequency of the trolleys depends on the time of the year and traffic and weather conditions. In addition, trolleys tend to run more frequently on weekends than on weekdays.

If I get off and go to a museum or attraction, does the trolley wait outside?

The trolleys go around the city continuously, allowing guests to hop off and hop on at the designated stops. When you hop off a trolley to see the sights at a particular stop, that trolley will continue with the tour, and another trolley will arrive shortly to make another pick-up.

Can I bring my luggage on board?

Space on the trolleys is limited, but in some cases, it may be acceptable to bring a small suitcase on board. Bear in mind that the trolleys are designed specifically for sightseeing and therefore contain limited storage space (as compared to motor coaches.)

Can I bring my stroller on board the trolley?

Strollers are allowed, but they must be collapsible and be stored up front with the conductor. Strollers in the aisle ways would constitute a safety hazard.

Nashville Old Town Trolley Tours

The very mention of Nashville often conjures up the image of a stage full of ornate boot and cowboy hat clad, banjo picking entertainers performing in front of star-struck concert-goers keeping time to the rhythm and dreaming of one day gracing that stage themselves.

While that’s a fairly common scenario, we’re going to show you that Nashville is so much more than that. Long before Nashville got its name, it was a promised land for pioneers and idealists of varying genre – A place for talented, hard-working, passionate folks to stake their fortunes not only in music and the arts, but medicine, high tech, academia and even candy!

From the hunter-gatherers making their home along the Cumberland and the lone French fur trader establishing a trading post, to the initial hearty settlers of Fort Nashborough and the first musician to step off a bus onto Broadway with nothing but a guitar and dream—Nashville has been the hook on which the brave and entrepreneurial have hung their hopes and aspirations.

Their success inspires others to hone their chops and journey to Music City in search of their own big hit. As we weave our way through this rich and vibrant city learning about, and paying tribute to its legends and pioneers, you won’t help but feel inspired, too!

Great experience. Loved the historical narration. Having several monitors on board was very helpful although on 2 of the trolleys we were on, 1 of the monitors was not working.

The drivers were first rate. Their commentary was fabulous. The big problem for us was that there were not enough buses on the route. Wait times we're way too long. We had to wait in sweltering heat, with no shade available and had full buses pass by that weren't able to pick us up.

Boston's Duck Boat tours are taking a lot longer these days. Here's why.

By Mike Sullivan

Updated on: August 6, 2024 / 7:08 AM EDT / CBS Boston

BOSTON - Boston's Duck Boats are moving slower than ever. What was once an 80 minute trip is now sometimes a two-hour tour.

Traffic in downtown Boston has gotten so bad it's creating delays in city tours and leaving guides with little stories left to tell.

Bike lanes, bus lanes and mopeds

"It's the perfect storm of many things going on in the city. We have new bike lanes, new bus lanes, which create some confusion and adjustments," said Cindy Brown, CEO of Boston Duck Tours. "We have scooters going around which block the box, and can cause blocks and blocks of delays."

Boston Duck Tours has seen a spike in people being late or missing tours because of traffic and parking issues for people getting to their services.

Boston Duck Boat

"Sometimes guests miss exciting areas of the city because we have to do work-arounds for traffic," Brown said. "We built in some cushions on certain days with rush hour. We have extra ducks we keep throughout the day for a pinch."

At times, they have to shorten parts of the tour, be it on the road or in the water, so they can make up for the time lags. Brown said the tours that approach two hours can be difficult for some riders because there are no bathrooms onboard.

"The planning makes sense. Bus lanes are great and bike lanes are great. The planning looks great on paper, but if the enforcement isn't there it isn't going to work," Brown told WBZ-TV. "If you have a road with two lanes, and one double-parker, all of a sudden Boylston Street is one lane. You can imagine how that backs up through Back Bay and beyond."

Worse than the Big Dig?

Old Town Trolley has drivers on routes for as long as three hours. Their service allows riders to get on and off and spots.

Typically a trolley arrives every 15 minutes, but delays can have them showing up 30 to 40 minutes behind. Some of their drivers have told the company that the traffic is worse than before or during the Big Dig.

"They aren't going to get off the trolley to have lunch at Newbury Street because they don't know when the next trolley will get them," said Old Town Trolley General Manager Tim Carr. "Some of these are baptism by fire. How many stories can you get through on four light cycles in Copley Square?"

City traffic solutions

Carr said the city has been working with tour companies on possible solutions.

A statement from the Streets Department said:

" The Streets Cabinet aims to design roadways that balance safe use by all modes. Part of safe design includes clearly defining and separating spaces for the most vulnerable users. The rise of all types of delivery, and a shift in commuting patterns, have changed traffic in Boston. Our engineers evaluate all bike safety projects to confirm that the new street configurations will support known traffic volumes and sizes of vehicles such as emergency vehicles, buses, or trolleys. Our overarching goal is to build streets where all users– pedestrians, drivers, bicyclists, and transit riders– can reach their destinations safely and reliably."

We had a great time on the Old Town Trolley tours of Boston. You see and learn so much. They also have some really great trolley drivers and tour guides. Crafty was one of our drivers, and he was awesome! Funny, energetic, and he was having as much fun as we were. We stayed on the whole tour from stop 1 to stop 14 because he was hilarious. We also Papa Jim, and he was really cool as well. Papa Jim looked out for us and told us great places to go and which ways would be easier to walk after we got off the trolley. We loved this tour!

Huge thank you to Matt for getting us to the cruise on time and educating us on the way as our own tour guide! Also to Hummer for making trip back fun and educating also!! Job well done!!

Big shout out to Crafty and Good Will Both awesome, knowledgeable tour guides/drivers and very personable. Was a last minute activity and glad I did it Great way to see Boston

The tour guides are great. We had 2 different one based on where we got off and on again. Big negative is that there aren't enough buses to service the customers. At the start, and at one of the stops (1st stop) we had to let 3 buses go before we could board. Too many people waiting. I don't know what it's like on a regular weekend, but for the 4th of July (or any other holiday) I would hope HQ would have the sense to schedule more buses to be available. Major negative for this company.

While it does let you hop on and off reliably that's about the only benefit. We did it on a whim and the 'guide' just rambles and isn't interesting. Not like the ones in London at all

Group of 10 visiting Boston and our tour guide Lisbon is AMAZING! He is full of comedic wisdom and knows how to work a crowd. My family and I enjoyed our time and will definitely be back to Boston with Lisbon as our guide

When we were on the trolleys, we loved the tour guides on each one of them. The problem was the stops were so crowded that we had a difficult time getting back on throughout the day, resorting to us just walking to next stops. In all honesty, if you look up the map, you can walk this on your own and save the hassle of waiting for a trolley that has empty seats for you to get on when you want.

Photo of Michael T.

Very poor service. Got off and could never get back on because the trolleys were always full. They need to double their fleet. Total waste of money and time. Expensive and not worth it. Will be contesting charge with my credit card company.

Christmas trolley tour The tour guides and hosts were incredible and very knowledgeable! They helped accommodate our large group's seating arrangement. No complaints there! The trolley ride itself was nothing to shout about. It was a rainy day so I'll give the tour the benefit of the doubt that it may be better on a clear day, but the windows were completely fogged up and we couldn't see out. Everyone was constantly trying to use something to wipe the condensation off. There wasn't much to the tour - it was interesting to learn about the history of the Boston Commons Christmas tree, but otherwise, we weren't too impressed by the Christmas lights. The tour consisted of: - Boston Commons (got off the trolley to see the tree) + some storytelling - Charles street - Newbury Street while talking about Christmas shopping (I thought driving down Commonwealth would have been better with all the trees lit up!) - Driving past the Snowport festival The ticket expected a 90-minute tour but we concluded in about an hour. The "gift" that's included in the tour were candy canes offered at the end of the tour. Again, the guides were great! Loved their commitment and characters. Otherwise, I wouldn't spend the money. I'm sure the normal tour around Boston is much more detailed and exciting!

My fiance and I used the Trolley when visiting Boston this past summer. We had a 1-day ticket and were able to see A LOT. If you want to do everything on the tour, you really need the two day pass. We skipped some things because we were short on time and we also didn't have another day before moving to the next leg of our New England trip. My one frustration with the trolleys is that you can get unlucky and get denied if a trolley is full. I could see situations arising on busy days where you could be stuck waiting a long time at a stop, which would be frustrating. We were never turned away because we were pretty aggressive when the trolleys pulled up (people bunch up more than wait in a line). The drivers have many fun facts to share, and some really, really cheesy jokes to compliment them. Makes for a very enjoyable time!

Animal species other than dogs, emotional support animals, comfort animals, companionship animals, and service animals in training are not service animals.

Yes, we operate our tours rain or shine, hot or cold, year-round. However, bear in mind that some winter conditions can prohibit safe operation. Occasionally, we are forced to close operations for safety.

There are 13 stops on the tour, which are conveniently located at or near all the major points of interest. Click on Nashville Map and Stops to see a list of our stops and for information about the attractions and points of interest available at each stop.

How many times can I go through the loop?

You may ride the Old Town Trolley Tour around as many times as you wish. However, we recommend that you get off and on as you go and take advantage of the sights. Many of the attractions will get increasingly busy as the day wears on; so it’s often best to take advantage of the stops as you go. In addition, you will hear essentially the same information presented each time you go around on the tour, although presented by each driver with his or her own style and flair.

How often does the trolley pass each stop?

Old Town Trolley Tours of Nashville operates the city’s largest fleet of sightseeing vehicles and this allows us to pick up and drop off more frequently than any other trolley company. The frequency of the trolleys depends on the time of the year, and traffic and weather conditions. In addition, the trolleys tend to run more frequently on weekends than on the weekdays.

If I get off and go to a museum or attraction, do you wait outside?

The trolleys go around the city in a continuous loop, allowing guests to hop off and hop on at the designated stops. When you hop off a trolley to see the sights at a particular stop, that trolley will continue with the tour, and another trolley will arrive shortly to make another pick up.

What are your hours of operation?

Go to trolley tour schedule .

What is a hometown pass?

The Hometown Pass program was designed so that residents within our seven cities, Boston, Savannah, Key West, Washington DC, St. Augustine, Nashville and San Diego, can take advantage of our tours and attractions for FREE when accompanied by an adult paid guest.* It is free to join and easy to use. For more information, please call us at 1-800-844-7601 or visit us online . *Restrictions apply.

Can I bring my luggage on board?

Space on the trolleys is limited; but in some cases it may be acceptable to bring a small suitcase on board. Bear in mind that our trolleys are designed specifically for sightseeing and therefore contain limited storage space (as compared to motor coaches.)

Can I bring my stroller on board the trolley?

Yes, we can accommodate strollers but they must be collapsible and will be stored up front with the conductor. Strollers in the aisle ways would constitute a safety hazard.

Do you run tours in any other cities?

Old Town Trolley Tours operates sightseeing tours and historically themed tourist attractions in 8 different cities around the country. Go to Sightseeing Tours to learn more about our other cities.
