95 most inspirational travel quotes ever penned

Our favourite inspirational travel quotes have encouraged us to travel with abandon over the years. Perhaps they will do the same for you…

For us, there is no such thing as luxury travel; travel is, by default, a luxury. It is a privilege provided by the country of our birth, a privilege that many are not as fortunate to enjoy.

Sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves at just how ridiculous our lives have become: an ex-teacher and jobbing writer travelling the world for a living. It is absurd, it is astonishing, it is luxury.

When I first went travelling at 21 years old, my father gave me this quote scrawled on a piece of card.

inspirational travel quotes

It infused me with wanderlust. It encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone, make the most of my time, see the world and enjoy the freedom that comes with being on the road. It remains one of the most inspirational travel quotes I’ve read (even if Twain did not actually say it).

Today, 20 years and almost 100 countries later, it’s still in my wallet. Despite its tattered and dishevelled appearance, it’s every bit as important to me now as it was then.

With that in mind, we’ve collated our most beloved inspirational travel quotes to encourage readers to “explore, dream and discover” for themselves.

• Mark Twain Travel Quotes

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one’s lifetime.
To do something, say something, see something, before anybody else — these are the things that confer a pleasure compared with which other pleasures are tame and commonplace, other ecstasies cheap and trivial. Lifetimes of ecstasy crowded into a single moment.

It is the loveliest fleet of islands [ Hawaii ] that lies anchored in any ocean.
No alien land in all the world has any deep strong charm for me but that one [ Hawaii ], no other land could so longingly and so beseechingly haunt me, sleeping and waking, through half a lifetime, as that one has done. Other things leave me, but it abides; other things change, but it remains the same.   For me the balmy airs are always blowing, its summer seas flashing in the sun; the pulsing of its surfbeat is in my ear; I can see its garlanded crags, its leaping cascades, its plumy palms drowsing by the shore, its remote summits floating like islands above the cloud wrack; I can feel the spirit of its wildland solitudes, I can hear the splash of its brooks; in my nostrils still lives the breath of flowers that perished twenty years ago.

Occasionally the old urge surfaces, and we label it with names that suggest psychological aberrations: the big chill, a midlife crisis. — Tim Cahill
Only by going alone in silence, without baggage, can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness. All other travel is mere dust and hotels and baggage and chatter. — John Muir
Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread. — Edward Abbey

Once a journey is designed, equipped, and put in process, a new factor enters and takes over. A trip, a safari, an exploration, is an entity, different from all other journeys. It has personality, temperament, individuality, uniqueness. A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless.   We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us. Tour masters, schedules, reservations, brass-bound and inevitable, dash themselves to wreckage on the personality of the trip. Only when this is recognized can the blown-in-the glass bum relax and go along with it. Only then do the frustrations fall away. In this a journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it. — John Steinbeck
What is that feeling when you’re driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? – it’s the too-huge world vaulting us, and it’s good-bye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies. — Jack Kerouac
A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are for. — J.A. Shedd
Do not follow where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and make a trail. — Ralph Waldo Emerson

It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any. — Hugh Laurie
Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the Earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white. — Mark Jenkins

line for travel

The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. — Christopher McCandless
Adventure is allowing the unexpected to happen to you. Exploration is experiencing what you have not experienced before. How can there be any adventure, any exploration, if you let somebody else – above all, a travel bureau – arrange everything before-hand? — Richard Aldington
Be careful because Cambodia is the most dangerous place you will ever visit. You will fall in love with it, and eventually it will break your heart. — Joel Brinkley

• Solo Travel Quotes

To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the most pleasant sensations in the world. — Freya Stark
Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. — Unknown
I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can’t read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can’t reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses. — Bill Bryson
The true fruit of travel is perhaps the feeling of being nearly everywhere at home. — Freya Stark

line for travel

When you’ve managed to stumble directly into the heart of the unknown – either through the misdirection of others, or better yet, through your own creative ineptitude – there is no one there to hold your hand or tell you what to do. In those bad lost moments, in the times when we are advised not to panic, we own the unknown, and the world belongs to us. The child within has full reign. Few of us are ever so free. — Tim Cahill
No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow. — Lin Yutang
He travels the fastest who travels alone. — Rudyard Kipling

line for travel

Travel can be one of the most rewarding forms of introspection. — Lawrence Durrell
When the traveler goes alone he gets acquainted with himself. — Liberty Hyde Bailey
The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready. — Henry David Thoreau

line for travel

I think one travels more usefully when they travel alone, because they reflect more. — Thomas Jefferson
Loving life is easy when you are abroad. Where no one knows you and you hold your life in your hands all alone, you are more master of yourself than at any other time. — Hannah Arendt
Personally I like going places where I don’t speak the language, don’t know anybody, don’t know my way around and don’t have any delusions that I’m in control. Disoriented, even frightened, I feel alive, awake in ways I never am at home. — Michael Mewshaw

I can speak to my soul only when the two of us are off exploring deserts or cities or mountains or roads. — Paulo Coelho
Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road. Healthy, free, the world before me. The long brown path before me leading me wherever I choose. — Walt Whitman

• Anthony Bourdain Travel Quotes

If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them – wherever you go.
Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks — on your body or on your heart — are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.
It’s an irritating reality that many places and events defy description. Angkor Wat and Machu Picchu , for instance, seem to demand silence, like a love affair you can never talk about.   For a while after, you fumble for words, trying vainly to assemble a private narrative, an explanation, a comfortable way to frame where you’ve been and what’s happened. In the end, you’re just happy you were there — with your eyes open — and lived to see it.

line for travel

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.
I know that I will never understand the world I live in or fully know the places I’ve been. I’ve learned for sure only what I don’t know — and how much I have to learn.
I’m a big believer in winging it. I’m a big believer that you’re never going to find the perfect city travel experience or the perfect meal without a constant willingness to experience a bad one. Letting the happy accident happen is what a lot of vacation itineraries miss, I think, and I’m always trying to push people to allow those things to happen rather than stick to some rigid itinerary.
Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonalds? … I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once.

line for travel

It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn.   Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.
I think food, culture, people and landscape are all absolutely inseparable.
Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.
Southeast Asia has a real grip on me. From the very first time I went there, it was a fulfillment of my childhood fantasies of the way travel should be.

line for travel

I wanted adventures. I wanted to go up the Nung river to the heart of darkness in Cambodia . I wanted to ride out into a desert on camelback, sand and dunes in every direction, eat whole roasted lamb with my fingers. I wanted to kick snow off my boots in a Mafiya nightclub in Russia. I wanted to play with automatic weapons in Phnom Penh, recapture the past in a small oyster village in France, step into a seedy neon-lit pulqueria in rural Mexico. I wanted to run roadblocks in the middle of the night, blowing past angry militia with a handful of hurled Marlboro packs, experience fear, excitement, wonder.   I wanted kicks – the kind of melodramatic thrills and chills I’d yearned for since childhood, the kind of adventure I’d found as a little boy in the pages of my Tintin comic books. I wanted to see the world – and I wanted the world to be just like the movies.
At this point I think my body is like an old car. Another dent ain’t gonna make a whole lot of difference. At best it’s a reminder that you’re still alive and lucky as hell. Another tattoo, another thing you did, another place you’ve been.
I have seen firsthand that things can turn on a dime. Tremendously awful, evil things happen to nice people all the time. I have seen people, again and again, relentlessly grinding under the wheel of poverty or oppression. At the same time, I see random acts of kindness and pride in the most outrageous and most unexpected circumstances. I am grateful. I understand that I am very privileged to see what I am seeing, even when it hurts. I think that people, particularly Americans, need to be more inspired to travel and be adventurous with the things they eat. And if they are curious about the world and willing to walk in somebody else’s shoes—that is surely a good thing.

line for travel

Without experimentation, a willingness to ask questions and try new things, we shall surely become static, repetitive, and moribund.
Who wouldn’t travel, if they could? It’s unthinkable to me. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy different, new sensations, especially when the world is filled with so much great stuff? I like new things. I like to feel good. I like learning about stuff. It makes me happy. I like being wrong about stuff.
If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.
Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

Guide: How To Come Up With A Slogan For Your Travel Company

Why is your slogan important.

Slogans are critical when doing any sort of marketing or advertising for your business.

Your slogan's role is to help the customer understand the benefits of your product/service - so it's important to find a catchy and effective slogan name.

Often times, your slogan can even be more important than the name of your brand.

Because your slogan has the ability to show your customer the type of commitment you have to them and also tells them exactly what your brand stands for.

So, let's dive into all of the critical pieces to coming up with a great slogan for your travel company.

6 Tips For Creating A Catchy Slogan

1. Keep it short, simple and avoid difficult words

Similar to naming your business , your slogan should be short and simple.

A great rule of thumb is that your slogan should be under 10 words. This will make it easy for your customer to understand and remember.

2. Tell what you do and focus on what makes you different

This is a very important piece - and a lot of brands miss the ball and explaining what it is that makes them unique and different from the next competitor.

There are a few different ways you can incorporate what makes your business special in your slogan:

  • Explain the target customer you are catering your services towards
  • What problem do you solve?
  • How do you make other people, clients or your employer look good?
  • Do you make people more successful? How?

3. Be consistent

Chances are, if you're coming up with a slogan, you may already have your business name, logo, mission, branding etc.

It's important to create a slogan that is consistent with all of the above.

This will help when advertising your business and creating a powerful website.

4. Ensure the longevity of your slogan

Times are changing quickly, and so are businesses.

When coming up with your slogan, you may want to consider creating something that is timeless, and won't just fade with new trends.

Try to avoid using terms like "we are the only" and anything with the word "technology," because your statement could be contradicted at any moment.

5. Consider your audience

When finding a catchy slogan name, you'll want to make sure that this resonates across your entire audience.

It's possible that your slogan could make complete sense to your audience in Europe, but may not resonate with your US audience.

The confusion could be due to language barriers or cultural differences - so you will want to determine who your audience is, and how this could be perceived.

6. Get feedback!

This is one of the easiest ways to know if your slogan will be perceived well, and a step that a lot of brands drop the ball on.

Ask friends, family, strangers and most importantly, those that are considered to be in your target market.

Here's a few ways you can ask for feedback:

  • Ask for feedback on a Facebook group
  • Niche forums
  • Twitter communities
  • Product Hunt
  • Test a few different slogan(s) on Facebook Ads and see what performs best
  • Ask a stranger at your coffee shop!

Examples of Great Slogans And Taglines

Needing a little inspo? We put together a list of some of the best slogans and taglines of all times.

Each phrase offers all the key aspects we discussed above - short, simple, unique, consistent, timeless and targeted to their specific niche.

Here they are:

  • Airbnb – Belong anywhere
  • Alka Seltzer – I can't believe I ate the whole thing

Where To use Travel slogans

Where do you use travel slogans? Everywhere! You see them on billboards, in commercials, and even online. They are a great way to get your message across to potential customers and inspire them to take action.

There are many different types of travel slogans, and each one can be used in a different way. Some slogans are designed to be playful and funny, while others are more serious. Some slogans are used to promote specific companies or corporations, while other examples feature general information about travelling.

If you’re looking for travel slogans that will reach your target audience, it’s important to know who you are trying to target. Are they young professionals? Families with children? High school students? Once you know who your audience is, it will be easier to search for a variety of slogans that appeal to them.

If you’re in the business of promoting different modes of transportation, a good place to start looking for travel slogans is on billboards and posters located near transit stations. Transit riders are often people on their way to or from work, so they are typically considered to be busy professionals. It’s a great place to reach this type of passenger with fun and easy-to-remember slogans that reflect your company’s core values.

If you want an example of a travel slogan that targets either high school students or families with children, look no further than National Car Rental’s “Go Places” campaign. This slogan is fun and memorable, and it encourages people to explore new places. It also highlights the company’s focus on customer service, which is a key selling point for National Car Rental.

Quick Tips To Create a Catchy Travel slogans

Creating a slogan for your travel company can be tough. You want something that’s catchy and memorable, but you also need to make sure it accurately represents your brand. Here are a few quick tips to help you create a slogan that will capture attention and inspire travelers to explore the world.

1. Keep it Short: A good slogan should be short and sweet, catchy enough to make it memorable, but not so long that potential customers lose interest. A slogan should be able to fit in a tweet or Facebook post without any difficulty.

2. Make it Clear: Try to use words that are easy to understand and convey the message you want your travel company’s slogan to send out.

3. Be Unique: A good slogan is unique and stands out from the competition. It should be something that people will remember and associate with your brand.

4. Inspire Travel: The best slogans are those that inspire people to explore the world. They make people want to pack their bags and travel to far-off destinations.

5. Integrate Your Brand: If possible, find a way to work your company name into the slogan in some way. This will help customers easily recall it and can make sure they know who you are even when using a different phrase or word in place of the company name.

Frequently asked questions about KAYAK

How do i find travel deals on kayak.

Simply use one of our travel search engines to scan for prices gathered from hundreds of travel sites. KAYAK’s search results pages have loads of filter options to help you find deals, discover exactly what you’re looking for and make booking seamless. Plus, there’s no extra fee from KAYAK.

What makes KAYAK a great travel app?

On the KAYAK app for iOS and Android you’ll find all the great travel offers found on the website and much more. There are special mobile rates and app only deals that allow you to save even more money. Plus, you can get notifications straight to your phone letting you know when prices for your next trip have dropped. But the KAYAK app is much more than just a travel app. Use the Trips function to manage your travel itinerary and get up to date status alerts on flights, check-in changes and to store your boarding pass. Even if you’re in the middle of nowhere on your travels, you can still access your travel notes via Trips, as no internet connection is required.

How can I use KAYAK to manage my travel bookings?

KAYAK Trips creates a travel itinerary for you that will give you flight status alerts, can be shared with friends and more. Simply forward your booking confirmations to [email protected] or use the KAYAK app and sync your email account to keep all your travel plans organized in one app, even if you didn’t book with KAYAK. You can share your holiday plans with friends and family and also check out your travel stats for past vacations, like how far you’ve traveled, your most popular cities and how many times you’ve traveled around the world. Even if you don’t have signal, don’t worry, as you can access Trips to check out your itineraries whilst on the road. Your data is safe and secure with us and you won’t have to re-enter credit card info when booking future trips. If you want to make changes or cancel bookings, then you should contact the travel provider, which is provided on the booking confirmation.

What are KAYAK Price Alerts?

Instead of manually checking back in on the price of your next flight or stay, let KAYAK do the hard work for you with KAYAK Price Alerts. Once you’ve saved your search, our data will determine how the price will rise or fluctuate over the coming days. You’ll then get a push notification letting you know when’s the perfect time to book.

Search flights , hotels , rental cars , travel guides and more with KAYAK. KAYAK searches hundreds of other travel sites at once to get you the information you need to make the right decisions.

The 11 Best Luxury Cruise Lines, According to T+L's Experts

These luxury cruise lines offer stunning suites, fine dining, and exceptional itineraries.

line for travel

Cruising is back — and you might even say it's better than ever. "Vacations at sea are suddenly one of the biggest things in travel," Travel + Leisure cruise expert Paul Brady reported recently, as summer air travel is looking progressively messier but the cruise industry continues to stabilize post-pandemic. For those looking to plan a cruise, whether it's a last-minute trip for the summer or a 2024 around-the-world cruise, we've narrowed down the best luxury cruise lines to ferry you to some of the world's most mesmerizing destinations in comfort. Here, our favorite luxury cruise lines in the world.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

When this luxury cruise line says it's all-inclusive, it's not overstating. Everything from shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and laundry to gratuities, top-shelf liquor, and business-class international flights are included with Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' fares. While each luxurious suite features ocean views, nothing beats the view from the epic 4,000-square-foot, two-bedroom Regent Suite, which has two wraparound balconies, three walk-in closets, two Picasso lithographs, and a grand piano.

For the best in-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship, Kelly Cochrane, executive chef of Regent Seven Seas Cruises tells T+L.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises has just seven ships, but the debut of the brand-new Oceania Vista catapults this cruise line into the luxury division. The cruise line's relatively new Go Local shore excursions for small groups bring travelers to under-the-radar destinations, T+L contributing editor and long-time cruiser Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon reported recently. Her 2022 cruise on Riviera included 70 excursions "from canoeing Croatia’s Cetina River to cooking classes in Athens."

If you've ever dreamed of having your own butler, Silversea is the luxury cruise line for you. In fact, Silversea's butlers take white-glove service to a whole new level — they'll handle your laundry with more care than you do, scour port towns to find your favorite tastes of home, and even help you pack and unpack your suitcase. Further, Silversea's new culinary program, nicknamed S.A.L.T. (for Sea and Land Taste), brings the taste of destinations on board through cooking classes. Of course, there's no need to cook for yourself aboard a Silversea ship, as each one features several restaurants with multi-course menus to whet your appetite every night.

Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year. Viking came in at No. 1 in T+L's best mid-size ship category and river cruise category. Golden said the WBA Hall of Fame honoree's 50 river "longships" are "light-filled floating boutique hotels."

Laureen Robert / Courtesy of Ponant

French luxury cruise line Ponant aims to make passengers feel as if they're traveling on their own private yachts. Guests enjoy Ladurée macarons, Veuve Clicquot Champagne, and luxurious Hermès bath products on board. Each of the company's ships features an onboard spa with massage cabins and either a Turkish bath or sauna. Ponant's luxurious small ships sail to remote destinations like Antarctica, incorporating once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as eclipse spotting from the edge of the earth. The company also partners with Smithsonian and Disney on certain sailings.

Seabourn cruises to all seven continents, and most recently launched Seabourn Venture , "marking the first time the Carnival Corporation–owned luxury cruise line will offer adventurous sailings on an expedition ship built for extreme environments," Brady reported. (The sibling ship to Venture , Seabourn Pursuit arrives later this year.) The World's Best Award-winning cruise line has all-suite ships and "is known for its onboard service and over-the-top food including complimentary caviar and Thomas Keller steakhouses on ships such as the  Seabourn Ovation, " Brady said.

Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises ' luxury small ships call on 150 ports throughout Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific, and there's no way you'll go hungry on the journey. Exquisite onboard menus have been designed by acclaimed chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants. (You'll have to pay extra for alcohol, but all meals and a Windstar signature onboard barbecue — a feast of whole suckling pig, shrimp brochette, and more — are included.) The cruise line is not only a T+L World's Best Awards Hall of Fame honoree, it has a "long-standing partnership with the James Beard Foundation ," Brady reported, and regularly brings chefs on board for culinary-focused sailings. Yes, chef.

Courtesy of Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

Whether it's a river or an ocean you want to cruise, Scenic can take you there in style. The luxury cruise line operates river cruises in Europe and Asia, while ocean cruises on Scenic Eclipse (and the forthcoming Scenic Eclipse II ) can take guests to Antarctica, the Arctic, Australia, South America, and Greenland, among other coveted destinations. On board, you'll find fine dining, expansive spas and fitness facilities, and butler service.

Cunard Line

Jonathan Atkin / Courtesy of Cunard Line

This British luxury cruise line is known for its transatlantic service, which also transports pets between its headquarters in Southampton, England, and New York City. Cunard operates three ships with a fourth in the works, though only the Queen Mary 2 sails the transatlantic route. It's a cruise line that takes formality seriously; white-gloved waiters serve afternoon tea each day at 3:30 p.m. State rooms include 24-hour room service and evening turndown service with chocolates. Don't forget your tux, the gala nights are black tie.

Paul Gauguin Cruises

Roger Paperno / Courtesy of Paul Gauguin Cruises

Paul Gauguin Cruises operates just one ship, but it is exquisite, hosting 330 guests and sailing only in the South Pacific to destinations like Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Named the best small-ship ocean cruise line in T+L's 2022 World's Best Awards, Golden said the line is known for Tahitian-inspired massage techniques in the onboard spa and noted that cruisers particularly love the wonderful staff.

Celebrity Cruises

Steve Dunlop / Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises ' new Edge Series ships are taking things up a notch. Celebrity's signature Iconic Suites on board the Celebrity Edge and Apex offer panoramic views from above the ship's bridge; each suite boasts more than 2,500 square feet of space, including expansive 690-square-foot terraces, and comes with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Celebrity Beyond , which debuted in 2022, accommodates 3,260 guests has 32 bars and restaurants, like Le Voyage by chef Daniel Boulud, and two-story villas on board. Beyond 's sibling ship, Ascent , will be delivered later this year.

Best Travel Clothesline

What are the options? And which one to choose?

Which one is the best clothesline for travelers right now?

Quick Answer:

BEST TRAVEL CLOTHESLINE – HAWATOUR Portable Travel Clothesline

BEST PORTABLE CLOTHESLINE FOR CAMPING – Coghlan’s Bungee Clothesline

The cheapest option? If you have a bungee cord, you can use it as a clothesline.

1. HAWATOUR Portable Travel Clothesline (click for more details)

line for travel

An elastic travelers clothesline with clothespins.

Overall the best travel clothesline, our favorite.

It’s simple. It’s easy to use. And it’s just so much better for traveling than most of clotheslines. Because it’s made with travelers in mind. Take for example, the clothespins. You don’t have carry your own clothespins. There are “built-in” ones. They are tight. And they don’t slide. There are special clips for that purpose.

Thanks to its hooks the clothesline itself is very easy to set up, versatile and will hold on very well. It’s built to survive more than a single trip.

The line is made from stainless steel.

MAX LENGTH: 10 ft / 3 meters

2. Lewis N. Clark Adjustable Latex Clothesline (click for more details)

line for travel

A versatile, adjustable travel washing line.

Thanks to its triple-braid design you can hang your clothes without using clothespins. You simply hang your clothes between the cords. Unlike many others you can attach the Lewis N. Clark clotheslines in several ways – either using the straps or the suction cups.

It’s lightweight, very durable, and made of latex.

Comes with a storage pouch, suction cups and a carabiner.

MAX LENGTH: 6 ft / 1.8 meters

3. Coghlan’s Bungee Clothesline (click for more details)

line for travel

A simple, portable outdoor clothesline.

You can use it as a camping clothesline or at home in the yard.

Just like the Lewis N. Clark clotheslines you can use this one without any clothespins. Just hang your clothes between the cords. Easier for you and no need to worry about clothespins. The only downside is that not everyone likes to hang their clothes this way. It takes some time to get used to it.

4. EverSport Clothesline (click for more details)

line for travel

An adjustable, windproof clothesline (2-pack).

Thanks to its design, it’s very easy to adjust the length of this line, plus – because of the same reason it’s very lightweight (only 2 oz), and the wind is going through it. Use it at home, in your bathroom, on your balcony or while traveling and camping. Hang your clothes using hangers or clothespins (not included).

MAX LENGTH: 16.4 ft / 5 meters

5. Travelon Travel Clothes Line (click for more details)

line for travel

A compact, portable clothesline for travel.

Just like many travel clotheslines you can use this one without any clothespins. Just hang your clothes between its cords.

The line features large suction cups, used to secure it to the walls or tiles. If you would like to use it while camping, or if there’s no walls to secure it to, you can easily remove the suction cups and use the carabiner/hook. Or don’t remove them, as the carabiner is big enough to use it with them on.

6. Sun & Sheets Compact Adjustable Travel Bungee Clothesline (click for more details)

line for travel

An adjustable, portable clothesline for camping or travel.

This portable clothes line is durable, colorfast, and with it you can secure your clothes without clips or pins. Thanks to the fact that it’s colorfast, you don’t have worry about the color bleeding into your clothes.

Attach it to anything from door knobs to trees.

Clothes drying in the sun

Washing Your Clothes While Traveling

Washing your clothes while traveling and backpacking is easy.

Even if there’s no laundry service or laundromat.

Just bring a travel laundry soap bar, learn how to do it and wash your clothes by hand. If you are like me, and you want to travel with as few possessions as possible, I have a good news for you. Many of the best soaps for camping , and also biodegradable shampoos made for hiking are multi-purpose.

You can use them also to wash your clothes.

One bottle. One solution. Multiple uses.

No more excuses not wash your clothes on the road.

Why Do You Need a Travel Clothesline?

Well, you actually don’t. It’s not a 100% must-have accessory.

There are a number of ways how to dry your clothes. You can hang them on chairs, balcony railing, branches. But is safe? Are those objects clean? For some of you it won’t matter at all, for others it may end up being a constant worry. So, at least for the latter, a travel clothesline is a nice thing to have.

A travel clothesline makes things easier for you.

You hang your clothes just about anywhere. Yes, even in your hotel room. Yes, in front of your cabin in the woods or in your trailer. With a travel clothesline, you always have a special designated place where to dry your clothes safely. They won’t fall from the balcony or won’t get dirt and rust from it.

You don’t have to look for a place in your guesthouse for drying clothes anymore. You don’t have to look for a washer and dryer anymore, since now you can take care of your laundry at your hotel room.

Laundry on the clothesline

What Are the Alternatives?

What if you don’t want or can’t get a clothesline?

Of course, you can use just any rope you can get your hands on.

If you are in a hotel, and there’s no clothesline, you can use curtain rods to hang your laundry. But be careful, don’t put anything too heavy up there. Because you don’t want to break anything, right?

The cheapest option? Best cheap alternative of clothesline? If you have a bungee cord, you can use it as a clothesline. Just as I was doing in my early travel days. It’s a very cheap , easy to set up and versatile solution.

How How to Choose the Best Travel Clothesline?

Are you looking for a new travel clothesline?

Even though travel clothesline is such a simple device, there are still a few thing to take into account.

The more compact the clothesline is, the better.

Most travelers don’t need a very long clothesline. I would say, some 6 to 10 (1.8-3 metres) ft is enough for most travelers. Clotheslines of this size often pack down small, and don’t take up much space in your bag.

Look for a clothesline that comes in a storage pouch. So that you can easily pack it and store it in its own bag. The storage pouch will keep the clothesline neatly packed.

2. Durability

As it is with everything, some clotheslines are more durable than others.

You want to buy a clothesline that is both durable, and lightweight. When possible, make sure you find out how durable is the material. Just do a 5-minute research (Google – is x material better than y material). It won’t be hard, since most of the materials nowadays are durable, despite being lightweight.

A clothesline has to be somewhat durable . It needs to hold the weight of wet clothes without sagging. As clotheslines tend to lose their shape and stretch out over the course of time, you need to make sure you choose the more durable one. So it lasts longer.

3. Material

Durability goes hand in hand with the material.

The stronger the material, the more durable the travel clothesline, the longer you can use it without replacing it. The most popular materials are steel, latex, plastic and nylon (like in a bungee cord). Nylon is considered to be the most durable one. Many of the best clotheslines resemble nylon bungee cords. While being very durable and long-lasting, they are also lightweight.

Plastic ones are the least durable.

Make sure the clothesline is colorfast.

You don’t want the die to rub off and stain your clothes!

4. Extras and Features

Even such a simple gadget as a clothesline can have some cool features.

For instance, clothespins are a nice extra.

Or, special construction, so that you can use it without clothespins. The cord is multiple-ply with small openings which you can use to secure your clothes. Also check if there’s a storage pouch. It’s a nice, small thing to have. It will keep the clothesline neatly packed.

Last but no least – what type is it?

Is it a clothesline with suction cups on both of its ends?

Or are there carabiners? Or are there hooks? Straps?

Which one to choose? It depends on your travel style. If you are staying mainly in hotels and guesthouses, choose the one with suction cups. Use them to secure the clothesline to the walls or tiles. If you would like to use it while camping, or if there’s no walls to secure it to, choose a clothesline with a carabiner/hook.

Some clotheslines offer multiple attachment options.

Do you bring a washing line with you when traveling? Or are you just fine without one? What is the best washing line you have tried?

Book Your Trip Like a PRO

1. Book Your Flight. Find cheap flights using Kiwi.com , Momondo.com . Or subscribe to Dollar Flight Club , if you don’t want to be searching for the flights yourself. Kiwi currently is my first choice.

2. Book Your Accommodation. Booking.com , Agoda.com and Airbnb . I use Booking and Agoda at least a dozen times a year, and Airbnb – when looking for a long-term stay. My best tip is to ALWAYS compare the price. Sometimes the same hotel is cheaper on Booking.com, other times – on Agoda. Always compare the price!

3. Buy Your Travel Insurance . Ekta and SafetyWings are two companies I can recommend. Ekta offers some extra benefits, that will be important for those doing some higher risk activities (make sure to choose the right plan!), while SafetyWings is better for digital nomads. SafetyWings is also very affordable .

Traveling with kids to Europe? Why including a cruise might be better than just staying on land

Summer Hull

You may associate the word "cruising" with short jaunts to the Bahamas or Mexico. On those cruises, a lot of the experience is about the onboard fun, and some passengers never even leave the boat.

But if those typical short cruises out of Florida aren't necessarily your kind of thing and you are planning a trip with kids, there's a very different type of experience available in Europe that is worth considering.

I've been traveling to Europe with kids from when they were crawling to now, with one on the cusp of high school. On those trips, we've stayed in traditional hotels, apartments and even in a dome above the Arctic Circle . While all of the trips were magical in their own ways, our most recent almost-two-week European trip included five nights on a cruise, and this may now be my favorite way to experience Europe with kids.

line for travel

Here's why cruising to Europe with kids during your European vacation might be an even better trip than staying in hotels on dry land.

Related: Best European cruises: Ships that stand out across the pond

Occupancy limits

First and perhaps most importantly, booking traditional hotels might frustrate you quite quickly when you're in Europe with a family.

Most of the time, you'll find that standard hotel rooms have an occupancy limit of two people per room — three if you're really lucky. Outside of some airport hotels and pricier family-specific rooms, you'll almost never be able to sleep four to a room in Europe due to occupancy limits.

So, for example, if you have a family of four, you'll often have to book two rooms — and whether you're paying with cash or points, that adds up quickly. (You can inquire about family plan rooms where the second room is at a discount, but even that can be hit and miss.)

If you choose the apartment or home rental route, there are other issues to consider, such as evolving laws and sentiments related to using vacation rental companies such as Airbnb, which residents often feel contribute to local housing crises.

However, if you opt instead to sleep aboard a cruise ship in Europe, you can easily find rooms built for four or even five. For example, we recently sailed in Europe on Disney Dream and it has standard cabins bookable for up to five people.

Familiar foods when you want them

While eating and experiencing different kinds of cuisine is a big, fun part of exploring Europe for adults, that may not be the case for children. Not every kid is ready to scour a new menu, in potentially another language, for each and every meal.

When we travel, it can be tough to keep one of my kids fed since she struggles with eating unfamiliar food (though not for lack of trying). So, a cruise is a great option for our family. We can go ashore for a local lunch and then return to the ship at night for some easy comfort food.

For example, a few culinary highlights (for me) on our trip included lunch on a Tuscan farm featuring cheese, truffle honey and oil-dipped bread, and a paella in Barcelona.

line for travel

As excited as I was about those dishes, my 8-year-old was equally thrilled to see some familiar favorites back on board. In other words, it was a win for all involved.

line for travel

See a lot without working hard for it

Traveling through Europe with kids is amazing, but it's also work. There's packing up, dealing with checking in and out, making sure you didn't forget that charger or stuffed animal, hauling everyone's bags to the train station or airport, unpacking, restocking the fridge, and on and on — all of that can get old quickly.

Conversely, if you are cruising Europe with kids (at least for a portion of your trip), there will be no packing or unpacking to deal with during that part of your journey. Simply drift away to sleep at night after sailing out of, say, Barcelona and wake up in Livorno, Italy, just a short drive from Pisa, while leaving the "work" of getting there to the ship. You get somewhere new to explore virtually every day without worrying about the logistics of getting there.

line for travel

Not only do you have the option of some of the larger ships on lines such as Royal Caribbean and Disney available in Europe, but there are even some river cruises that are family-friendly, such as the Adventures by Disney river cruises, which opens up all kinds of additional ports and destinations.

By sailing from port to port, you can get a taste of an area without committing to multiple days there. The worst-case scenario with less time in each destination means that you may fall in love with a place and want more time. But then, you can always plan another trip there in the future.

All that said, it is worth noting that when you cruise in the Mediterranean, some of the frequently used ports are quite a distance from the major cities you'll likely want to experience. For example, the port used to visit Rome, Civitavecchia, is about an 80-minute bus ride from the Eternal City itself. The considerable distance between the port and Rome can lead to early mornings, long days and tired kids. In our case, we used our time on the bus to take some power naps and keep everyone happy.

Something for everyone

In my opinion, if you're going to Europe, you should do things that you can only do in Europe. That might mean walking through the Roman Forum, seeing the Leaning Tower of Pisa or dancing under the Eiffel Tower in Paris. And often, if you are traveling as a family, you will be doing those things as a family.

line for travel

However, there may be times when some family members don't want to do things at the same time as everyone else for days on end.

Maybe you want to enjoy some jazzy piano tunes and a quiet drink at a bar while your tween wants to play basketball with their friends and your partner wants to go for a swim. After returning from a day out and about onshore, everyone can return to the ship in the evening to do exactly what they want to do when they want to.

line for travel

A little time (slightly) apart can be a fantastic way to reset so you're ready to enjoy more experiences together the next day.

Cool off easily

A lot of Europe is quite warm in the summer — hot, actually. When we visited Rome in mid-July, temperatures clocked in at 100 degrees, and it felt even hotter than that.

In much of Europe, widespread air conditioning and swimming pools are few and far between, so it can be tough to cool off between adventures. However, if you stay on a large cruise ship, you will have access to not only some pretty great air conditioning (which means a whole lot, especially in southern Europe) but also pools, waterslides and plenty of ways to cool off.

line for travel

Readily available 'easy button'

Just before boarding our most recent cruise, the kids needed something familiar for dinner on our fourth night in Barcelona. So, since I had spotted a global pizza chain across the road from our hotel that night, I fired up Google Translate, went online and ordered some pizza. It wasn't fancy, but I hoped it would be easy and affordable.

When I walked across the street to pick the order up, there was no pizza. There was no record of the order despite my email confirmation number. My Spanish and their English weren't meeting in the middle enough for anyone to understand the problem — or solve it. Magically, after an hour or so of confusion and two trips into the store, my order eventually appeared, but it's a good example of how sometimes the "easy button" can be hard to find abroad when you're doing it yourself.

On the ship, when we wanted a pizza after a long day exploring Rome, we simply walked up to the top deck and got it.

While each ship is different, some other amenities of a large ship that may make your life easier include a way to do laundry, really good air conditioning waiting for you, onboard medical assistance if someone in the group is unwell, and easily accessible staff members that speak your language in case you have questions or are in need of recommendations.

You may not need those conveniences, but knowing they are there can take away some of those stresses you may have in the back of your mind.

Combine time at sea with time on land

Of course, if you do head to Europe for a family cruise, then you might as well go a little deeper and at least explore the city you're departing from. If you have time, you can even tack on more time in the city that your cruise will end in, too. That means you can get the best of all worlds: You can enjoy all the conveniences and made-for-kids entertainment available on the ship and have time to really explore Europe on your own, too.

For us, that meant spending more time in Barcelona at the beginning of our cruise. We had plenty of time to walk the Gothic streets; shop; feast on Iberian ham, paella and gelato; enjoy an evening stroll in Park Guell; and, of course, visit the Sagrada Familia, among other things.

line for travel

After the cruise disembarked in Barcelona, we took a train to Paris and spent several nights exploring there, too.

line for travel

In both of those locations, we were often shelling out for multiple rooms each night, grateful for the easy days in the middle of the trip that we'd spent on the ship and — every now and then — really missing the familiar food waiting on the ship and the fun (and friends) readily available in the kids and teens clubs.

Pro tip: Some European cruises start in one port and end in another, which is an even easier way to make the most of your time in two different cities.

Bottom line

If you're nervous about navigating Europe with kids , first know that it is absolutely doable. But having tried multiple methods, I would highly recommend considering a cruise as an easy introduction to Europe.

You can visit various cities, see impressive sights and do it all with the familiar home base of your cruise ship waiting for you each night. Or, do what we did and combine some days on your own, exploring by land, and some days aboard a cruise with a captain at the wheel. That way, you can see more places than you otherwise would, and everyone can take a bit of a break and wake up in a new port to have as busy or lazy of a day as their heart desires.

As for my family, I now have my eye on a Northern Europe cruise, where we could perhaps experience places like Ireland, Norway, Iceland or even Greenland — it's an experience that would be tough to replicate solely traveling by land and air.

Skip the line: 4 tools to help you move through airports faster

Puedes leer esta historia presionando aquí.

As a frequent flyer, one of the things I hate the most is the long lines at security and waiting at airports. Although very necessary for security matters, they can be a headache for travelers. However, there are four tools, some are paid and others free, that help me save time at airports. Here are my favorites:

1. Mobile Passport Control (MPC)

A secure and free application that allows you to store your travel documents, photos and customs declaration from your mobile. This will allow you to go to an express line at passport control inspection upon your return to the United States from any international destination.

2. RESERVE by CLEAR

A free tool of the CLEAR application that works at selected airports for flights in the United States and other countries such as Germany, Canada, Italy or the Netherlands.

How does it work? You must enter the CLEAR page or application and select your RESERVE by CLEAR option. You fill in your flight information and select the time and airport where you would do your security screening. Once you complete the information, the system will produce a QR Code that you will present to CLEAR officers at the airport. This will allow you to get past long lines at participating airports, such as:

  • Amsterdam (AMS)
  • Berlin (BER Runway)
  • Calgary (YYC)
  • Denver (DEN)
  • Edmonton (YEG)
  • Frankfurt (FRA)
  • Hanover (HAIR)
  • Los Angeles (LAX Fast Lane)
  • Minneapolis (MSP)
  • Montreal (YUL)
  • New York (JFK)
  • Newark (EWR)
  • Orlando (MCO)
  • Phoenix (PHX)
  • Seattle (SEA Spot Saver)
  • Toronto (YYZ)
  • Vancouver (YVR)

3. TSA Pre-Check

A program that allows you to get through a fast line at security checks on domestic flights in the United States. You can do it without having to take your electronics out of your luggage or remove your shoes or straps, which will help you save a lot of time in large airports. According to TSA data, 88% of passengers with TSA Pre-Check wait less than 5 minutes in the security line. Adults who have it can go with children under 17 years old. It has a five-year span and costs $78.

4. Global Entry

A paid program that allows you to go through a fast track at your entrance to the United States and other participating countries upon arrival from an international destination. It also allows you to avoid having to complete the documentation normally required upon your return from an international destination. It has a span of five years and a cost of $ 100 dollars. This is usually very beneficial in airports that typically have long immigration lines, such as JFK in New York City, Newark, Atlanta, LAX in Los Angeles, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, ORD in Chicago, DFW in Dallas, IAH in Houston, Las Vegas, Seattle and San Francisco.

A great benefit of Global Entry is that it includes the TSA Pre-Check membership that allows you to quickly go through security checks at domestic airports. Another advantage is that many credit cards refund the cost of membership if you pay using their card, including the AMEX Platinum, the Chase Sapphire Reserve, the Capital One Venture X or the different card options offered by different airlines.

Here are four tools that have helped me save time and headaches at airports. Choose the one that best suits your needs as a traveler.

How one Philadelphia woman turned travel vouchers from American Airlines into an Italian staycation

WPVI logo

PHILADELPHIA -- One Philadelphia woman made the most of a lucrative airline hack when she collected thousands of dollars in travel vouchers, all while living a life of luxury in Italy, by agreeing to get bumped from her flights home.

And she chronicled the entire experience on TikTok.

Susan Berry's flight home from Italy was oversold and she says the American Airlines gate agents were offering $1,200 travel vouchers to fly out the next day.

Except the next day's flight was also oversold - and the day after that too.

"When I found out that there was potentially a two week opportunity to do this, that's when I started being, like, cha-ching, cha-ching, cha-ching!" she told Good Morning America.

And she wasn't just stacking travel vouchers. She says American also set her up with a free hotel and her meals were paid for. They even arranged a car service from the airport.

So, again and again, Susan returned to the airport, fully intending not to get on her flight.

"I'm at $3,600 and counting. I'm trying to get up to $10,000 and then travel the world," she says in a TikTok video.

And while you don't have to be as ambitious or outgoing as Susan, experts say flights are oversold a lot and if you have the flexibility, you can make thousands of dollars, plus extras - especially if you negotiate.

"Airlines have a secret menu as well. This can be things like lounge passes or even a business class seat on your replacement flight," said Scott Keyes, founder and chief flight expert at Going.com.

Susan did eventually make it back home to Philadelphia, as her fourth flight finally had enough room for her on board.

"I was just getting started, so I was mentally prepared to stay for two weeks," she said.

Morning commuters are in for a rude awakening today

Tube delays 09.08.24 (Picture: TFL)

Nearly half of the TfL network is either reporting delays or part suspensions.

On the London Underground, the Bakerloo and Circle lines are experiencing minor delays because of a signal failure and a broken-down train respectively.

The District line, which stretches well into the commuter belt, is seeing severe delays due to a faulty train, transit officials say .

This is mainly in west London, between Earl’s Court and Wimbledon, Richmond, Ealing Broadway and Edgware Road

On the Metropolitan line, there is no service between Wembley Park to Aldgate – all of its central London route – due to a trespasser. This has rippled onto the Jubilee line, with the nearby stations between  West Hampstead and Wembley Park not running.

The DLR is experiencing minor delays between Bank/Tower Gateway and Canning Town/Lewisham due to an earlier signal system failure at Poplar. The Overground was briefly experiencing delays but has settled down now.

But the chaos is actually worse than it seems, according to True Tube Status, a service that monitors London Underground routes.

The app says that the Central line – one of the most vital commuter lines – is seeing minor delays, with 21% longer journeys. Same for the Piccadilly line, which services Heathrow airport.

Circle line journeys are about 20% longer than normal, which True Tube Status reports amounts to severe delays rather than minor.

Most of the hobbled lines this morning are seeing journeys between 20 and 30% longer than normal.

They expected an Olympic boon. But some Paris businesses are experiencing a bust

PARIS (AP) — On a typical summer day, tourists flock to the historic Marais district of Paris, wandering its charming medieval streets dotted with ultra-chic boutiques, gazing at stunning private mansions, strolling through the elegant 17th-century square Place des Vosges, and filling humming restaurants and bars.

Catch up on AP’s coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony, with performances from Lady Gaga, Celine Dion and more. Follow AP’s live coverage.

But this summer has hardly been typical, and those streets, shops and cafes have been markedly emptier in the days leading up to the Paris Olympics — leaving businesses like Stolly’s Stone Bar, a pub popular with English speakers, pining for summers past.

It’s a far cry from what business owners expected when they first heard the Olympics were coming to Paris , says David Carroll, who stood behind the bar on a recent, slow weekday.

“It’s sure not the Olympics we were hoping for — so far, anyway,” said Carroll, a Canadian who has been working in the neighborhood for 20 years. “It’s the same for everyone around here.”

Carroll attributes the light crowds to multiple factors, but first and foremost the chilling effect from security measures that have had tourists encountering metal fences, police checkpoints and demands for a special QR code that they may have neglected to obtain — a digital pass required to access some popular areas before Friday’s highly secured opening ceremony along the Seine River.

Image

Now, visitors are facing major disruptions after officials reported fires and other sabotage to the high-speed rail network .

Some would-be tourists decided to avoid Paris altogether during the Olympics, fearing high prices, crowds or general chaos . On top of that, many Parisians have escaped the city in their usual summer exodus — likely even more so this year.

“Many tourists haven’t arrived yet and Parisians have left, so it’s kind of a combination,” Carroll said. And as for the tourists who are here, “people aren’t able to move around, so wherever they are, they’re kind of stuck in their areas.”

He’s hopeful this is “the calm before the storm” and that after Friday’s opening ceremony , things will loosen up. But for now, it can be an ordeal to make even a simple urban trip.

Just ask Gillian Levison and Richard Mitchell. The British couple traveled by train from London this week precisely because, Mitchell said, they figured flying during the Olympics would be “a nightmare.” The rail journey went smoothly until they arrived at the Gare du Nord, the train station in the north of Paris, and found their pre-ordered taxi had been canceled.

There was a “terrific queue” for taxis at the station, Levison said, and while they felt lucky to find one, the odyssey to their hotel on the Left Bank took two hours and cost 200 euros ($217), exponentially more than it would normally cost.

The irony is that the couple, who live in Dorset, England, have no interest “in those blessed Olympics,” as Levison puts it. “Definitely not here for that,” she said. Rather, they are attending a family wedding in the countryside and wanted to spend a few days in Paris first.

“It seems they didn’t think much about how people were going to get across the river,” Mitchell said of Paris authorities.

It’s all been certainly hurting the business hopes of Jean-Pierre Salson, who owns Factory’s Paris, a shop in the Marais specializing in menswear. Salson estimates business is down 30% compared with this time last year and probably 40% among American customers.

“It’s been very slow since the beginning of June,” he said, “and July is worse. There’s a lot less tourists, from all the countries. I think they’re avoiding France and Paris because they’re afraid of the Olympics.”

And for those who are in Paris, it’s especially hard to get to the center, he added. “There are restricted areas you can’t get to by car. So you need to walk, and some subway stations are closed.”

Analysts say the high costs of travel to Paris this Olympic season — and staying there once they arrive — means some planes are landing with empty seats and hotels are not as booked as they normally would be in the summer high season.

Olivier Ponti, vice president of insights at ForwardKeys, a travel data company with access to airline industry ticketing data, said arrivals to Paris in the three weeks before the Games were down 13% from a year earlier, meaning typical tourists are holding off on trips. But those coming to Paris for the Games have sent arrivals up by 8% during the Olympic period, he said.

Some tourists who would traditionally have been pouring in at this point of the summer “have been put off by high prices and communication on the number of new obstacles created by the Olympic Games,” such as landmarks being closed or difficulties getting around, he said. “Those traditional travelers have decided that it would be probably great to visit Paris, but not at that time.”

Airlines are feeling the pain. Ponti said that some planes arriving in Paris are not full after many airlines increased capacity for the Games and charged “really high fares.” Air France-KLM said it expects a 150 million to 170 million euro drop in revenue from the Games in the third quarter, while Delta foresees a $100 million hit from June to August.

Those visitors who do get to Paris face high prices at hotels, leading to rooms sitting empty, according to Tim Hentschel, CEO of Hotelplanner, a hotel booking platform. Paris hotels are seeing 70% occupancy compared with 90% at the same time last year, he said this week, noting that the average rate was twice as high as it usually is — at 700 euros a night.

“The prices that they were charging for Paris hotel rooms and Paris travel over those Olympic days were just too high for consumers to bear,” Hentschel said, adding that hotels are now starting to drop rates dramatically.

Airbnb, on the other hand, has not seen the same issues. It said in a statement that the Paris Olympics is “one of the biggest hosting events in Airbnb history, with more guests staying in local homes on Airbnb than at any event, ever before.”

Some business owners say they believe — or simply hope — that things will get better as the city becomes easier to navigate after Friday’s opening ceremony. Though officials say the rail disruptions may last at least through the weekend.

“It’s true, it’s very quiet now,” Guillaume Faller, who manages the Feria restaurant in the Marais, said this week. “Much quieter than the same period last year. But I think it will bounce back in a few days. In any case, I hope so. But for now, the (situation) is clearly not what we expected it to be.”

Salson, the clothing shop owner, believes it’s just a matter of patience.

”I (just) have to wait,” he said. “I’m sure they will be back, because I had many American customers telling me in the spring: ‘Well, see you in September, October and November!’”

Who Are the Far-Right Groups Behind the U.K. Riots?

After a deadly stabbing at a children’s event in northwestern England, an array of online influencers, anti-Muslim extremists and fascist groups have stoked unrest, experts say.

  • Share full article

Fires burn in a street with a vehicle also alight in front of ambulances and police officers.

By Esther Bintliff and Eve Sampson

Esther Bintliff reported from London, and Eve Sampson from New York.

Violent unrest has erupted in several towns and cities in Britain in recent days, and further disorder broke out on Saturday as far-right agitators gathered in demonstrations around the country.

The violence has been driven by online disinformation and extremist right-wing groups intent on creating disorder after a deadly knife attack on a children’s event in northwestern England, experts said.

A range of far-right factions and individuals, including neo-Nazis, violent soccer fans and anti-Muslim campaigners, have promoted and taken part in the unrest, which has also been stoked by online influencers .

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has vowed to deploy additional police officers to crack down on the disorder. “This is not a protest that has got out of hand,” he said on Thursday. “It is a group of individuals who are absolutely bent on violence.”

Here is what we know about the unrest and some of those involved.

Where have riots taken place?

The first riot took place on Tuesday evening in Southport, a town in northwestern England, after a deadly stabbing attack the previous day at a children’s dance and yoga class. Three girls died of their injuries, and eight other children and two adults were wounded.

The suspect, Axel Rudakubana , was born in Britain, but in the hours after the attack, disinformation about his identity — including the false claim that he was an undocumented migrant — spread rapidly online . Far-right activists used messaging apps including Telegram and X to urge people to take to the streets.

Over 200 people descended on Southport on Tuesday night, many traveling by train from elsewhere in Britain, the police said. Rioters attacked a mosque, wounded more than 50 police officers and set vehicles alight.

On Wednesday night, another far-right demonstration brought clashes with the police in central London, leading to over 100 arrests. Smaller pockets of disorder broke out in Hartlepool, in northeastern England; in the city of Manchester; and in Aldershot, a town southeast of London.

On Friday night, Northumbria Police said its officers had been “ subjected to serious violence ” as far-right demonstrators set fires and attacked officers in Sunderland, a city in the northeast.

Saturday brought violent protests to cities including Hull, Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham and Stoke-on-Trent, as well as Belfast, Northern Ireland. In Liverpool, the police said more than 300 people had been involved in “violent disorder” on Saturday night, with businesses looted and two officers hospitalized.

The chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, Gavin Stephens, told BBC Radio on Friday that extra officers would be on Britain’s streets and that the police would use lessons learned from the 2011 London riots .

“We will have surge capacity in our intelligence, in our briefing and in the resources that are out in local communities,” he said. The organization has said that nearly 4,000 additional officers have been deployed to deter the violence.

Which groups are behind the unrest?

Several far-right groups have been at the riots or promoted them on social media. David Miles, a prominent member of Patriotic Alternative, a fascist group, shared photographs of himself in Southport, according to Hope Not Hate , a Britain-based advocacy group that researches extremist organizations.

Other far-right agitators spread information about the protest on social media, including British Movement , a neo-Nazi group. Images of the protests examined by Hope not Hate showed some people with Nazi tattoos .

After the disorder in Southport, the police said that supporters of the English Defence League had been involved. The riots have also attracted people linked to soccer violence, or hooliganism, which has long overlapped with nationalist movements in Britain.

Officials noted that not everyone at the demonstrations had far-right views. David Hanson, a cabinet minister, told LBC Radio on Friday: “Some might be caught up in the summer madness. Some might be people who’ve got genuine concerns.”

But, he warned, “If you are organizing this now, we will be watching you.”

What is the English Defence League?

Created in 2009, the English Defence League was a far-right street movement notorious for violent protests and an anti-Islam, anti-immigration stance.

The group emerged in Luton, England, where community tensions had risen after a handful of Islamic extremists chanted abuse at British soldiers returning home from Iraq. Luton was already associated with Islamist extremism, because it was home to a small number of adherents to Al Muhajiroun, an extremist group implicated in the 2005 London bombings.

Among the English Defence League founders was Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, who goes by the name Tommy Robinson . Born in Luton, he was at one time a member of the far-right British National Party. He also had connections to soccer violence and was convicted of leading soccer fans in a brawl in Luton in 2010.

In the group’s early years, regional divisions carried out local demonstrations, including protests over planned mosques, and engaged in actions like placing pig heads around Muslim sites.

According to Matthew Feldman, a specialist on right-wing extremism, the group represented a new stage in far-right British politics, because unlike the National Front or the British National Party, it did not contest elections.

“This is direct-action politics, disseminated and coordinated via the new media — ranging from Facebook to mobile phones, and digital film to YouTube,” Professor Feldman wrote in a 2011 academic study of the English Defence League.

In 2013, Mr. Yaxley-Lennon said he had broken ties with the league. And after leadership disputes and internal divisions, the group no longer formally exists. But experts say that many of its supporters remain active through other nationalist groups with similar aims and tactics.

In the later 2010s, Mr. Yaxley-Lennon rose to prominence in international circles that shared his anti-Muslim stance, including in Europe and the United States . In the past week, he has used social media, including a previously banned X profile that was reinstated under Elon Musk , to promote falsehoods about the identity of the Southport attacker.

Nowadays, experts say the English Defence League has evolved into a diffuse idea spread mainly online. Its Islamophobic and xenophobic stance has become an “ideal that people self-radicalize themselves into,” said Sunder Katwala, the director of British Future, a nonprofit that researches public attitudes on immigration and identity.

Why is the disorder so hard to quash?

Many far-right groups in Britain have deliberately moved away from formal hierarchies and leadership structures, experts say.

Joe Mulhall, Hope Not Hate’s director of research, called the movement “post organizational” in a 2018 analysis . Social media and other technologies, he wrote, offer “new ways for it to engage in activism outside the confines of traditional, organizational structures.”

Violent street rallies, a core part of the English Defence League’s rise, often serve as a recruiting tool for extremist groups, according to Paul Jackson, a University of Northampton professor who specializes in the history of radicalism and extremism.

“Social movements thrive on such demonstrations,” he wrote in a 2011 paper . “They are ‘performances’ that can reinforce the perceived senses of injustice and being ignored by mainstream voices to followers.”

The police may also struggle to respond to mobs that can be conjured within hours through private messaging apps. According to Professor Feldman, “police are still oftentimes thinking in 20th-century terms — that something like this might take a few days to set up; that they might ask for a permit for a march.”

The Southport riot, he said, “was very nearly a flash demo.”
