Ancient ruins, stunning views and sandy, rugged terrain as far as the eye can see make Jordan a truly unforgettable holiday destination. Through the ages, countless empires made Jordan its home, seeking control of its profitable trade routes. Now, the arid, golden landscape of this history-filled Middle Eastern nation hides archaeological gems in every corner of its vast territory. None, however, are more impressive than the ancient Nabatean city of Petra, carved out of the cliff faces of a rosy limestone gorge to provide a truly inspiring experience. This warm rose hue sprawls south towards Wadi Rum, an eerily silent desert of craggy canyons that bounce the sun’s rays while granting breath-taking views. As an escape from the heat and just a stone’s throw away from the country’s bustling capital, Amman, the Dead Sea appears as a salty oasis of tranquillity, with its health spas and luxury resorts.

The Culture

Jordan's culture is a rich blend of traditions characterized by warm hospitality and a profound connection to its historical heritage. Jordanians are renowned for their cordiality, creating an inviting atmosphere for travellers.

In Jordan, formal greetings are a customary aspect of interactions. Expressing "Marhaba" (hello) and "Salam" (peace) when entering homes or shops is not only polite but deeply ingrained in the culture. Hospitality is highly esteemed, and guests are treated with the utmost respect. Offering tea or coffee as a sign of hospitality is a common practice, and it's considered impolite to decline.

The culture in Jordan is a harmonious fusion of various influences due to its historic role as a crossroads of civilizations. Arabic is the official language, but English is widely spoken, particularly in urban areas and among the younger generation. Jordan's population is predominantly Muslim, with a substantial Christian minority. However, the nation is home to a variety of other religious and ethnic communities, including Circassians and Bedouins. This religious diversity enriches the cultural landscape of Jordan.

Traditional attire remains an integral part of Jordanian culture. Jordanian men frequently wear the dishdasha (a long robe) and head covering, while women may be seen in the abaya or hijab. In urban areas, Western-style clothing is also prevalent.

Jordan's traditional music and dance forms, including dabke, serve as expressions of cultural heritage. These performances frequently accompany celebrations and special events, uniting people through music and rhythmic movements.

The Best Time to Visit

Jordan offers diverse experiences year-round, making it a captivating destination for every season. Spring (March to May) is arguably the best time to explore Jordan. The weather is mild and comfortable, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F) in most areas. The landscape comes alive with blooming wildflowers, and outdoor adventures like hiking and exploring ancient ruins are particularly enjoyable during this season. Spring is perfect for a visit to Petra or embarking on a desert adventure in Wadi Rum.

Summers (June to August) in Jordan can be hot, with temperatures often soaring above 30°C (86°F) and even higher in the desert regions. While it's a great time for water activities in the Red Sea and the Dead Sea, it's advisable to stay hydrated and seek shade during the scorching midday sun. If you plan to explore Jordan's northern regions or the cooler hills around Amman, the heat is more manageable.

Autumn is another excellent time to visit Jordan, especially in September and October. The weather remains pleasant, making it ideal for outdoor excursions. The colours of the landscape begin to change as fall sets in, creating a picturesque backdrop for your adventures. The start of autumn is also the perfect time to experience Jordan's vibrant local culture and traditions.

Winter (December to February) in Jordan is relatively mild, but the temperature can drop, particularly in higher elevations like Petra. While it may not be suitable for swimming in the Red Sea, it's an excellent time for exploring historical sites and enjoying urban experiences in cities like Amman. Some travellers appreciate the cooler weather for their outdoor adventures in the desert as long as they are prepared for chilly nights.

Things to Know

How to plan a trip to jordan.

Most Jordan tours fly in and out of Amman, the nation’s capital, thanks to its plentiful air connections. From there, it’s possible to see the highlights in just over a week. Petra and the deserts of Wadi Rum are  Jordan highlights for any first-time visitor, but a week in Jordan gives you time to add the Roman city of Jerash, the Dana Biosphere Reserve, and some relaxation by  the Dead Sea to your Jordan trip. With more time, spend a few days in Aqaba, relax by the beach and snorkel the reefs of the Red Sea.

How long can I stay in Jordan?

A visa issued on arrival in Jordan is good for 30 days.

What currency does Jordan use?

Jordan uses the Jordanian dinar which trades around .7 to $1 USD.

How much is a trip to Jordan?

A  Jordan tour can be done quite affordably, but for a proper immersion into this unique country, budget around US $345 per person, per day.

Do I need to tip in Jordan?

Baksheesh  is not as prolific in Jordan as it is in many parts of the Arab world.  A small tip is customary for good service at hotels and restaurants, and for drivers and guides. Ten percent will normally be enough.

Should I bargain in Jordan?

Be sure to bargain in Jordan’s markets. A fair price is usually 60 percent of the seller’s initial ask. You should also confirm prices with your cab driver before setting out. Don’t try to bargain in hotels, restaurants, or other businesses with fixed prices.

What to pack for a trip to Jordan?

Good walking shoes and light, breathable clothing will save you a lot of discomfort in Jordan. Make sure what you pack (except for beachwear) covers your shoulders and legs. While renowned for its deserts, Jordan is a diverse landscape. Its winters can be chilly and rainy, so a light waterproof jacket is a good idea during these months, as well as a few light, breathable layers.

What is Jordan’s famous food?

There’s no dish more Jordanian than  mansaf , a delicious platter of lamb, rice and fermented yogurt often topped with parsley, nuts and lemon.  Ka’ak is a sesame covered bread that will ruin you for all other pita, and it’s worth persevering with  makmoura to get at the meaty goodness inside that crisp pastry. For delicious and authentic barbecue, look no further than the tender meats falling off the bone at a Bedouin  zarb .  Kanafeh offers a cheesy sweet treat at any time of day, and of course you’ll find regional staples like hummus,  labeneh , and  baklava .

How safe is Jordan for female tourists?

Jordan is generally more liberal than its neighbours and is considered one of the best introductions to the region for solo female travellers. A few precautions will keep you out of trouble, however. Don’t walk at night on your own and try to ignore offers of help or tours from strangers. Jordanians tend to be genuinely friendly and curious, but err on the side of caution if anything feels off. There is no strict dress code for women in Jordan (beyond covering shoulders and knees, which also applies to men), though some religious spaces may be more conservative.

Is Jordan LGBTQ+ friendly?

Again, breaking with its Arab neighbours, Jordan legalized homosexual acts in 1994. There are also some provisions for gender confirmation and Amman supports a small but active LGBTQ+ scene. However, public attitudes are extremely conservative. LGBTQ+ tourists are welcome in Jordan, but be discreet if you’re not around people you know. Public displays of affection are frowned upon regardless of orientation. Any men you see holding hands are most likely expressing friendship, not romantic affection.

Is the tap water safe to drink in Jordan?

Jordan’s tap water meets safety standards for drinking, but due to water shortages it can taste a little odd, so many visitors prefer bottled water. There is no recycling program to speak of in Jordan, so a reusable bottle and purification tablets are often a better option. For other purposes such as bathing and brushing your teeth, tap water will do fine.

What to know when visiting Petra?

The Nabataean city of Petra is Jordan’s star attraction, and ever-increasing tourist numbers have not dulled its sense of majesty and wonder. The best times to visit are during the shoulder seasons, March to May or September to November. The relatively quiet winters can also be a good time if you don’t mind the cold (down to 36°F [2°C]). Petra opens at 6am year-round, closing at 6pm in summer and 4pm in winter. Several nights a week, a Petra by Night experience illuminates the Siq and Treasury with candles, offering a completely new way to appreciate the Rose Red City. The site is much bigger than most visitors expect, so for a deep dive into its history with time to see the lesser-known sites, consider staying an extra day or two.

Food & Drink

Jordanian food is a feast for the senses, reflecting the country's rich history and cultural diversity. Mansaf is considered the national dish and is a hearty and aromatic feast. A traditional Bedouin meal, it features tender lamb cooked in fermented, dried yogurt, served over a bed of rice and flatbread. Mansaf is often enjoyed during festive occasions, embodying Jordanian hospitality.

Mezze is a delightful array of appetizers that kickstart any Jordanian meal. From creamy hummus and smoky baba ganoush to stuffed grape leaves (warak enab) and crispy falafel, mezze offers a symphony of flavours.

Grilled meat is a culinary art in Jordan. Kebabs, whether made with succulent lamb, beef, or chicken, are seasoned with aromatic spices and served with fragrant rice or flatbread.

Jordanians take pride in their tea and coffee traditions. Enjoy a cup of sweet mint tea, a popular choice, or savour the strong and cardamom-infused Arabic coffee (gahwa) served in small cups with a side of dates.

Arak is an anise-flavoured alcoholic beverage that is a traditional choice for those seeking a taste of Jordanian spirits. Diluted with water and often enjoyed with mezze, arak adds a unique touch to social gatherings.

End your meal on a sweet note with Jordan's delectable desserts. Kunafa, a pastry filled with sweetened cheese or nuts, and baklava, layers of phyllo dough with honey and nuts, are irresistible treats.
