go travel ecuador

There are just two major seasons in Ecuador: wet and dry. But which one is right for the things you want to do? © Westend61 / Getty Images

Ecuador perfectly illustrates South America’s geographic and atmospheric diversity.

With its varied ecosystems, Ecuador experiences only two major seasons: wet season running from October to May and dry season, which takes place between June and September. This means it enjoys relatively steady and moderate weather (22 Celsius) throughout the year, and deciding when to visit will mostly depend on what it is you want to do while you're there.

Nevertheless, Ecuador’s contrasting regions (Serranía, Coast, Amazon rainforest and the Galápagos archipelago) do experience some ebb and flow of seasonal change and climate zones. After all, the country sits right on the equator, leaving half its territory in the northern hemisphere and the other half in the south.

Here’s our guide for the best times to visit Ecuador .

Ready to travel to Ecuador? Here are the things you should know before you go

Diver viewing a green sea turtle, Galapagos Islands.

December to February is the best time for coastal fun

From December to February, days on the Pacific Coast and the Galápagos Islands are generally warm, with occasional but tame rain and the best underwater visibility for those booking snorkeling or scuba diving trips.

This time of the year is also ideal for wildlife enthusiasts hoping to spot courtship rituals and newborns, as the hatching, breeding and nesting season of species such as giant tortoises, birds and sea lions take place in the Galápagos.

On the Pacific shoreline, daring wave riders benefit from winter storms in the North and the west swells making their way south, bringing optimal surfing conditions.

Meanwhile, the weather varies from chill to moderately cold in the Andean region, and the Oriente experiences relative dryness. Though rain is constant all year round in the Amazon rainforest, during this time of the year visitors are less likely to get soaked under pouring rain and will find it easier to explore the trails.

In recent years, however, due to changing climate conditions, the lack of rain has started to disrupt water transportation, which is the only means available to reach many reserves and communities.

With festivities like Christmas, New Year and Carnaval as well as school breaks taking place on the Ecuadorian coast, December, January and February are high tourist months.

Prices are slightly higher and accommodation is hard to secure on major holidays, so planning ahead of time is recommended if you want to visit at this time. But don’t fret. The difference between other seasons is not too substantial and won’t dramatically affect your budget.

Planning to travel around Ecuador? Here's our guide to transportation

March to May is ideal for a rainy Amazon getaway

During March to May, good conditions continue on the Coast and the Galápagos archipelago for surfing and underwater activities. On the islands, spotting albatrosses, iguanas, tortoises and blue-footed boobies will be an everyday occurrence as they arrive for hatching season. Keep your eyes peeled for the blue-footed boobies’ mating dance, which occurs in May.

Rain takes over the highlands as early as the last days of February until early May. Ecuadorians live by the Spanish saying "Abril aguas mil" (in April, thousand waters) during April, which is the rainiest month of the year and generally coincides with Holy Week celebrations — though the rain never stops devotion, and religious demonstrations will take place regardless.

The Amazon rainforest also experiences rain, bringing out a particularly luscious and verdant landscape, better navigation conditions and higher chances of spotting animals that thrive in rainy weather.

This is the best time of the year to see flora and fauna, including some birds that hide during the dry season to avoid the heat. You will, however, need to pack sturdy rubber boots, a raincoat and insect repellent in your travel essentials.

Flight and accommodation prices will fluctuate during this period as important holidays unfold throughout April and May. Holy Week, Labor Day (May 1) and the anniversary of the Battle of Pichincha (May 24), which are observed nationwide, will encourage tourism, bringing prices up and making it hard to find accommodation. Book hotels in advance if you plan to stay in the Coastal region, where Ecuadorians flock during this season.

Visiting the Ecuadorian Amazon? Here's our planning guide

Unveil the wonders of the highlands from June to September

Benefiting from sunny days and summer breaks in the Andean region, the Ecuadorian highlands thrive from June to September. Clear skies, good weather conditions and a slew of cultural activities make this period a favorite for national and foreign tourists.

Though increased tourist activity naturally leads to higher prices, hiking trips to some of the most beautiful Andean mountains and colorful traditional festivals will justify the slightly higher prices. Make sure you book your tickets and plan well in advance if you aim to visit Ecuador at this time of the year.

In June, the central and northern highlands put their best foot forward for their traditional and religious festivals. Pujilí, a town in Chimborazo, celebrates Corpus Christi the first week of June with big parades, where the danzante (the dancer) — a traditional figure carrying a large, adorned headpiece — dances to the rhythm of the bombo (bass drum) and pingullo (a traditional Andean flute).

Inti Raymi, celebrating the summer solstice, follows, with the most prominent fêtes taking place in Peguche, Otavalo and other towns in Imbabura. In August, Indigenous people in the northern highlands celebrate Fiesta del Yamor to express their gratefulness to Pachamama (Mother Earth) for the harvest season.

In September, places like Latacunga and Zámbiza, a rural community in Quito , honor the Virgin of Mercy and Saint Michael the Archangel, respectively, with gatherings that mix Indigenous culture and Catholic devotion.

But it's not only the highlands that teem with activity. Adventure-loving tourists can enjoy the arrival of humpback whales to the Ecuadorian coast starting June through September. Droves of these majestic animals arrive in the waters of Puerto López in Manabí every year for the breeding season. Whales stay as they give birth to their calves and mate again, guaranteeing their return for the next year.

Make the most of your time in Ecuador with this guide to the best places to visit

October and November are the best months for off-peak travel

Because of the transition between seasons, the Amazon region has a less predictable weather pattern in October and November. This is shoulder season and an ideal time for exploring the rainforest and avoiding heavier rain and flooding.

The Coast and Galápagos Islands might experience light morning mists and drizzle during this season, which signals the arrival of warmer days.

Temperatures start to drop in the highlands, bringing gentle rain and slighter chillier nights. In October, people in the region prepare for the Lash of St Francis (el Cordonazo de San Francisco) — northern winds expected to bring heavy squalls on Saint Francis Day (October 4).

Though precipitation might bring a few challenges, this is still a good time for hikers and tourists with an exploring agenda. It's a relatively low season compared to other times of the year. Flight tickets won’t be gasp-inducingly cheap, but prices will certainly reduce and accommodation will be easily available.

However, watch out for November, as Día de los Difuntos (Day of the Dead) on November 2 and Cuenca’s Independence celebrations on November 3 are commemorated with long weekend holidays that prompt travel throughout the country.

Top 5 things to see and do in ecuador.

A turtle swimming underwater in the clear, blue waters of the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador

1. Enjoy Quito

Ecuador’s capital is beautiful and energetic. Head to the city’s Old Town to see its historic colonial past. Quito also has plenty of colorful markets to explore with vendors selling incredible indigenous crafts, art, textiles, and delicious local food. The city’s largest and oldest church, Monasterio de San Francisco, features some of the original tilework from its construction in the 16th century and a staircase that was originally designed for the Vatican. Quito is the closest major city to the equator as well, so you can straddle the line and be in both hemispheres at once!

2. Hike Cotopaxi Mountain

Cotopaxi is Ecuador’s second-highest mountain and was the world’s highest volcano until the Chilean volcano Tupungato erupted in 1986. This 12,500-foot-tall snow-capped monster is popular with hikers and mountain bikers. Climbing the entire mountain usually takes about two days and is considered moderately difficult due to the steep climbs and high altitude. It’s best for experienced hikers and climbers who have some training. There are plenty of shorter hikes available, however, including the short (but steep) walk to the first refuge at the base of the volcano. Guided day trips range from $50-90 USD per person.

3. Explore the Galapagos Islands

There are few places in the world that offer wildlife spotting opportunities as good as the Galapagos Islands. The Galapagos Islands were formed from active volcanoes and they’re most famous for being the birthplace of Darwin’s theory of evolution during his visit in 1835. From marine iguanas and Galapagos penguins and sea lions to orcas, manta rays, and the Giant Galapagos tortoise (some tortoises are more than five feet long), these islands are teeming with a wide variety of life. Book a multi-day visit to make the most of your time. While not cheap, it’s worth every penny!

4. Adventure in Ibarra

Located 90 minutes outside of Quito, Ibarra is perfect for adventure travel and indigenous visits. It’s a beautiful city with quaint cobblestone streets and colonial-style whitewashed buildings surrounded by the Andes Mountains. Consider rafting, swing jumping, trekking, climbing, kayaking, and more. Don’t leave without trying their handmade ice cream — it’s a local delicacy made in bronze bowls with fruit, sugar, and ice.

5. See the Amazon rainforest

Approximately half of Ecuador is covered in the Amazon rainforest. There are five National Parks located within Ecuador’s Amazon jungle. Yasuni National Park is believed to be the most biodiverse place on the planet and has been named a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. Over 1,000 species of animals can be found in the forests and lagoons of the Ecuadorian Amazon, including tapirs, monkeys, jaguars, and ocelots. Temperatures in the Amazon remain hot year-round, and it might rain at any time, but if you’re prepared it’s possible to visit year-round. Ecuador offers one of the quickest routes to the Amazon in South America. A day trip costs $150 USD while multi-day tours start at $350 USD.

Other Things to See and Do in Ecuador

1. see baños.

This small town lies high in the Andes and on the hillside of Ecuador’s most active volcano, Tungurahua. Besides the fantastic volcano treks, visitors also flock to Baños to experience the healing powers of its hot springs and to give thanks for miracles performed at the Church of the Virgin of the Holy Water. It’s also the country’s adventure capital, with lots of biking, white water rafting, bungee jumping, ATV rentals, and a circuit of beautiful waterfalls to visit. Prices vary, but activities are not expensive. Bungee jumping, for example, is only $20 USD, while white water rafting is just $30 USD for a half-day trip.

2. Wander the Otavalo Market

Otavalo, located less than 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Quito, is Ecuador’s most famous indigenous market. Handicrafts, jewelry, necklaces, musical instruments, and clothing are just a few of the things you can buy at this expansive market, one of the largest in all of Latin America. It’s open daily from 7am-6pm, but it’s best to arrive early in the day.

3. Visit Cuenca

Cuenca is Ecuador’s third-largest city. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cuenca has colonial buildings, churches, and cathedrals that are extremely photogenic. The city is also thought to be Ecuador’s intellectual capital and has been dubbed the “Athens of the Andes.” Activities range from climbing the towers of Cathedral de la Inmaculada, for a stunning view of the city for only $2.50 USD to pampering yourself at Piedra de Agua with a relaxing soak in the heated mineral baths ($15 USD for 3 hours). Be sure to stroll through Mercado de las Flores (Flower Market) to take in the local pace of life.

4. Explore Ingapirca

Ingapirca is Ecuador’s premier Inca site and is located in the Canar Province, near Guayaquil and the country’s Pacific coast. Dating to the 15th century (not long before the Spanish arrived), the crowning glory of the site is the Temple of the Sun, which is a circular building made of intricately carved stones so as to fit together without mortar. There is also a burial site and a series of low walls which are ruins from various other historic buildings. A guided tour costs $45-50 USD.

5. Relax in Montañita

This surfer’s paradise is a relatively new addition to Ecuador’s list of attractions, although its reputation for pristine beaches and perfect waves has been growing steadily over the years. This is a proper backpacker’s paradise with laid-back beach parties, live bands, and inexpensive accommodations. A week-long surf camp (including lessons, accommodation, and food) costs as little as $500 USD.

6. Go whale watching in Puerto Lopez

One of the many tourist towns that lay along the coast is Puerto Lopez. Not so much of a surfing spot, it’s known instead for its incredible whale watching season. Witness the humpback whales in action, and then check out the blue footed boobies (a very rare bird species) at La Plata island (also referred to as “the poor man’s Galapagos” as the same animals found in the Galapagos are also on La Plata). Full-day tours that combine whale watching and an island visit cost $35–45 USD (plus a $15 USD national park fee).

7. Learn Spanish

There are hundreds of places to take a language course in this country if you’re looking to improve your language skills. If you are going to visit for a prolonged period of time, it might be a good idea to take a couple of lessons. Two top-rated schools are Yanapuma Spanish School and Simon Bolivar Spanish School, which have locations in Quito as well as other cities around the country. Each class is about four hours long, with prices ranging from $6-12 USD per hour. Courses run anywhere from 1-4 weeks long so you can pick an option that suits your budget and language needs.

8. Explore the lava tubes

North of Puerto Ayora, there are tons of underground tunnels that have been formed from molten lava. For $3.50 USD, you can take a self-guided tour or pay more to go with a guide. It’s pretty freaky being in these huge lava tubes but pretty amazing too and something you won’t really find in other destinations.

Ecuador Travel Costs

an aerial view of Quito, Ecuador surrounded by green hills on a sunny summer day

Accommodation – Accommodation is inexpensive in Ecuador. Dorms start around $6 USD per night, while a private room ranges from $10-50 USD. Free Wi-Fi is standard, and many hostels also include free breakfast.

For those traveling with a tent, camping is available all around the country. Campground prices vary but can be found for as little as $5 USD. Most national parks have spots in or around them.

Budget hotels are only slightly more expensive than hostels, with prices starting around $25 USD per night. Free Wi-Fi and free breakfast are common. For a hotel with a pool, prices start at $30-40 USD per night.

Airbnb is also available, with shared accommodation starting at $15-20 USD per night. For an entire home or apartment, expect prices to begin around $25 USD (though prices average closer to $50 USD).

Food – The local fare of Ecuador features ilapinchagos (fried potato cakes stuffed with cheese), ceviche , empanadas, arroz con pollo (chicken with rice) , and cuy (roasted guinea pig). Seafood is common, owing to its location on the ocean. Potatoes with roasted pig is a popular dish in the mountainous regions, while cassava (also known as yuca) is a common staple near the jungle.

Traditional meals typically cost between $3-5 USD. You can find food stalls on the street for around $1-2 USD. Western-style meals cost around $10-12 USD.

For a meal at a mid-range restaurant, expect to spend around $20 USD per person.

Beer is just $2.50 USD while a latte/cappuccino is $2.34 USD. Bottled water is $0.60 USD.

If you’re planning on shopping in the markets and grocery stores, you can expect to spend around $20-30 USD per week on basic groceries like bread, milk, eggs, cheese, chicken, fruit, and veggies.

Backpacking Ecuador Suggested Budgets

On a backpacking budget of $30 USD per day, you can stay in a hostel dorm, eat some street food and cook some meals, take a free walking tour, and use public transportation to get around. If you plan on drinking, add $5-10 USD per day to your budget.

On a mid-range budget of $105 USD per day, you can stay in a decent hotel, eat out for all your meals, take the occasional taxi to get around, enjoy a few drinks, paid tours, and visit most museums.

On a “luxury” budget of $245 USD per day, you can stay in a top hotel, rent a car or take more taxis, eat out anywhere you want, and take as many tours as you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in USD.

Ecuador Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Ecuador is an affordable destination, however, it never hurts to save money! Here are a few tips to cut down your costs during your visit:

  • Stay at hospedajes – These family-run guesthouses are all over the country and have rooms for just a few dollars per night. They’re one of the cheapest options available for accommodation.
  • Eat at the markets – This is the place to do your food shopping. You can find meals (or buy groceries) for just a few dollars, making this the best way to eat cheaply in the country!
  • Embrace almuerzos – Many restaurants have almuerzos , cheap lunches from a set menu. These are usually just a couple of dollars and usually include a drink. If you want to eat out for cheap, this is a great choice.
  • Carry small change – Forget about carrying any bills over $20 USD as you’ll have trouble changing them — even $20s can be difficult to break in small towns. Keep change on hand for smaller purchases.
  • Book last minute tours – Galapagos cruises are expensive. By booking your tour in Quito last minute, you can save up to 40% off the cost of the trip. You can also just fly there and see what is around too. If you’re flexible in when you go and can wait around for a spot to open, this is the cheapest option.
  • Couchsurf – Use Couchsurfing to find a local who can host you for free. You’ll only get a free place to stay but you get to connect with a local who can share their insider tips and advice.
  • Stay at a Hola Hostel – Hola Hostels is a network of hostels predominantly in South and Central America. They offer 10% off to their members, as well as other discounts for food and activities. Joining is free, and their hostels are also committed to environmentally sustainable practices.
  • Pack a water bottle – A water bottle with a purifier will come particularly in handy in Ecuador since you can’t always drink the tap water. Save money and thousands of plastic bottles and get a reusable bottle that can purify the tap water for you. My preferred bottle is LifeStraw .

Where to Stay in Ecuador

Ecuador has plenty of fun and affordable hostels. Here are my top suggested places to stay while there:

  • Community Hostel (Quito)
  • Vibes Hostel (Quito)
  • Esperanto B&B Surf Backpacker Hostel (Montanita)
  • Hostel Nucapacha (Guayaquil)
  • Dreamkapture Hostel (Guayaquil)

How to Get Around Ecuador

Cotopaxi, a towering snow-capped mountain in beautiful Ecuador

Public transportation – The bus is the most common, efficient way to get around Ecuadorian cities. A local bus ticket costs around $0.25 USD. Bus stops are really only existent in Quito — outside of the city, you’ll generally just have to flag one down and request your stop whenever it comes along.

Bus – The bus network in Ecuador is incredibly extensive, and it’s an easy way to get around the country. Most buses travel along the common backpacking routes. For the 7-hour ride from Quito to Guayaquil, expect to pay between $11-28 USD for a one-way ticket. A 20-hour ride from Quito to Bogota, Colombia costs between $80-100 USD. From Quito to Lima, Peru tickets start at $95 USD for the 29-hour ride.

Typically you can just show up at the bus station to get your ticket, but you can also use latinbus.com to look up routes and prices.

Another option is to book a hop-on/hop-off pass. These passes give you flexibility in your travel but are only available along specific routes. You can hop off and hop on at any time. Wanderbus Ecuador passes start around $249 USD for 11 stops, while longer routes can cost up to $699 USD for 20 stops.

Train – Ecuador’s national railway company shut down during the pandemic and due to lack of funding, has yet to resume operations. There are currently no trains running in Ecuador.

Flying – Flying within Ecuador is affordable, with most destinations being serviced from Quito or Guayaquil. Ecuador’s airlines are:

  • Emetebe (Galápagos-based airline)

Flights from Quito to Guayaquil start at $58 USD each way. TAME will also get you to some smaller Ecuadorian destinations, like Quito to Loja for $43 USD (one-way). Flying to the Galapagos Islands is obviously the most practical way to get there, but it’s certainly not cheap. One way from Quito to Baltra (the busiest airport) starts from about $133 USD. Guayaquil to Baltra is about $155 USD. Expect prices to double if you don’t book in advance.

Car rental – Car rentals cost around $35 USD per day, however, the driving conditions are far from ideal (poor road conditions, no driving signs, etc.). Unless you have experience driving in Central or South America, I’d skip the rental as buses are much cheaper and safer.

Renters need to be at least 21 years old. For the best car rental prices, use Discover Cars .

When to Go to Ecuador

Ecuador technically only has two seasons: the wet season and the dry season. But since Ecuador has such varying altitudes, it really depends on where/when you visit.

January to May is the coolest, wettest time of year for most of the country. Navigating the Amazon can be difficult during this time due to road closures and flooding. Temperatures along the coast are milder, and it’s actually quite pleasant in the Galapagos as the ocean waters are calm and warm.

June to the end of September is very dry, and you’ll also experience some of the warmest temperatures in Ecuador. This is peak season, so you can expect higher prices for flights and accommodations. Still, the weather is always nice and the entire country has a fun, upbeat atmosphere. Temperatures near the coast hover around 25°C (77°F), while in Quito the daily average is around 21°C (70°F).

How to Stay Safe in Ecuador

Ecuador is generally a safe place to travel around, even if you’re traveling alone or as a solo female traveler. Petty theft is the most common type of crime in Ecuador. Valuables like laptops, jewelry, and cell phones should be hidden from sight. Transport terminals are especially a hot spot for petty theft so stay vigilant.

In Quito, avoid the Old Town at night. Taxi crimes are a danger in places like Quito, Guayaquil, Manta, and Playas. The US consulate in Guayaquil even forbids its staff from hailing cabs in the street because of the risk of crime.

In a popular scam, someone will hop into your taxi with you once the journey has started and take you on a little tour of the city’s ATMs as they rob you blind. So use caution and have your accommodation call a taxi for you whenever possible.

If you’re worried about scams, read about common travel scams to avoid here .

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe in the country, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.). For more information, check out one of the many solo female travel blogs on the country.

If you go out hiking, always check the weather beforehand and bring appropriate clothing, as well as water and a hat.

Always trust your gut instinct. If a taxi driver seems shady, stop the cab and get out. If your hotel is seedier than you thought, move. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID, in case of emergencies.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

Bird under rainfall

Weather in Ecuador is one of the main reasons why the country is so abundantly blessed with nature & wildlife. Its strategic location & altitude play an important role in determining the many micro-climates found throughout the country, most of the highlands cities have a somewhat similar weather pattern. On the east & west side of the Andean Slopes a subtropical & humid climate is predominant but rainfall is completely variable.

There are no set climate seasons in the highlands of Ecuador, geographical location is the main determining factor, but the overall weather varies greatly. what comes closest that could be set as a pattern indicator is the dry season (June to September), & the wet season (October to May). December & January are a hit & miss where either season can occur or a mix of both. In general weather in Quito holds a steady cool climate from 14 to 19 Celsius on an average day, & drops to about 10 Celsius at night, rainfall is a different story and can happen at any time, Quitenos know better & its not uncommon to  see them carrying their jackets & umbrella in a sunny day.

The coastal region with its subtropical weather boosts a warm & a rather welcoming climate all year round, befitting for the amazing & beautiful beaches found along its coastlines, the water as to be expected is warm & adds to the overall enjoyment. Climate seasons are not exact & vary somewhat with an average temperature of 22 to 27 Celsius on a regular day based on your coastal location. 2 seasons are to be expected in the coastal region, the Wet-Hot season (January to May) good sunny mornings in all their splendor, followed by regular afternoon rainfalls. Dry Season (June to December) is regularly met with cloudy-grey & misty mornings, and in most cases the sun shines brightly well into the day.

The rainforest as represented by its name has rainfall all year round, the intensity & frequency does however change during the year, this shouldn’t be a deciding factor when entering the amazon as wildlife & vegetation don’t vary significantly. (May & June) start displaying heavier rainfall reaching its peak months in (July & August). (Mid September to December) would be considered the driest months with light & less frequent rainfall. (January to April) rainfall is rather steady. Benefits of traveling with higher rainfall are healthy high streams in rivers reducing time travel in canoes, and lighter rainfall translates to better hiking terrain for manageable treks.

  • Drinking water or eating food contaminated with animal urine
  • Avoid contaminated water and soil
  • Avoid floodwater

Clinical Guidance

Avoid bug bites, chagas disease (american trypanosomiasis).

  • Accidentally rub feces (poop) of the triatomine bug into the bug bite, other breaks in the skin, your eyes, or mouth
  • From pregnant woman to her baby, contaminated blood products (transfusions), or contaminated food or drink.
  • Avoid Bug Bites

  • Avoid rodents and areas where they live
  • Avoid sick people

Tuberculosis (TB)

  • Breathe in TB bacteria that is in the air from an infected and contagious person coughing, speaking, or singing.

Learn actions you can take to stay healthy and safe on your trip. Vaccines cannot protect you from many diseases in Ecuador, so your behaviors are important.

Eat and drink safely

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). You can learn more about safe food and drink choices when traveling by accessing the resources below.

  • Choose Safe Food and Drinks When Traveling
  • Water Treatment Options When Hiking, Camping or Traveling
  • Global Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
  • Avoid Contaminated Water During Travel

You can also visit the Department of State Country Information Pages for additional information about food and water safety.

Prevent bug bites

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in Ecuador. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

  • FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
  • Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
  • Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

  • Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
  • Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Although bed bugs do not carry disease, they are an annoyance. See our information page about avoiding bug bites for some easy tips to avoid them. For more information on bed bugs, see Bed Bugs .

For more detailed information on avoiding bug bites, see Avoid Bug Bites .

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in Ecuador include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

  • Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
  • Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
  • Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
  • If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
  • Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
  • Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

  • Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
  • Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
  • Do not dive into shallow water.
  • Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
  • Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
  • To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that can be spread in fresh water, is found in Ecuador. Avoid swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water, such as lakes, ponds, or rivers.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

  • Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
  • Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
  • Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
  • Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
  • If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

  • Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
  • Go to a doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Consider buying medical evacuation insurance. Rabies is a deadly disease that must be treated quickly, and treatment may not be available in some countries.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

  • Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

  • Use latex condoms correctly.
  • Do not inject drugs.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
  • Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
  • If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

  • Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
  • Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
  • Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medications you take.
  • Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call Ecuador’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
  • Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

In some countries, medicine (prescription and over-the-counter) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medicines you will need from the United States to avoid having to buy them at your destination.

Malaria is a risk in some parts of Ecuador. If you are going to a risk area, fill your malaria prescription before you leave, and take enough with you for the entire length of your trip. Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking the pills; some need to be started before you leave.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

  • Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
  • Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
  • Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

  • Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
  • Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
  • Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
  • Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
  • Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
  • Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

  • Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
  • Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
  • Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

  • Wear a seatbelt at all times.
  • Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
  • When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
  • Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of Ecuador may be poor.
  • Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
  • Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
  • If you choose to drive a vehicle in Ecuador, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
  • Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
  • Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
  • Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
  • If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
  • Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Medical Evacuation Insurance

If you are seriously injured, emergency care may not be available or may not meet US standards. Trauma care centers are uncommon outside urban areas. Having medical evacuation insurance can be helpful for these reasons.

Maintain personal security

Use the same common sense traveling overseas that you would at home, and always stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Before you leave

  • Research your destination(s), including local laws, customs, and culture.
  • Monitor travel advisories and alerts and read travel tips from the US Department of State.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) .
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary, contact information, credit cards, and passport with someone at home.
  • Pack as light as possible, and leave at home any item you could not replace.

While at your destination(s)

  • Carry contact information for the nearest US embassy or consulate .
  • Carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp; leave the actual passport securely in your hotel.
  • Follow all local laws and social customs.
  • Do not wear expensive clothing or jewelry.
  • Always keep hotel doors locked, and store valuables in secure areas.
  • If possible, choose hotel rooms between the 2nd and 6th floors.

Healthy Travel Packing List

Use the Healthy Travel Packing List for Ecuador for a list of health-related items to consider packing for your trip. Talk to your doctor about which items are most important for you.

Why does CDC recommend packing these health-related items?

It’s best to be prepared to prevent and treat common illnesses and injuries. Some supplies and medicines may be difficult to find at your destination, may have different names, or may have different ingredients than what you normally use.

If you are not feeling well after your trip, you may need to see a doctor. If you need help finding a travel medicine specialist, see Find a Clinic . Be sure to tell your doctor about your travel, including where you went and what you did on your trip. Also tell your doctor if you were bitten or scratched by an animal while traveling.

If your doctor prescribed antimalarial medicine for your trip, keep taking the rest of your pills after you return home. If you stop taking your medicine too soon, you could still get sick.

Malaria is always a serious disease and may be a deadly illness. If you become ill with a fever either while traveling in a malaria-risk area or after you return home (for up to 1 year), you should seek immediate medical attention and should tell the doctor about your travel history.

For more information on what to do if you are sick after your trip, see Getting Sick after Travel .

Enchanting Ecuador: An Adventure Lover's Haven in South America

Ecuador, a gem nestled on the equator in South America, captivates globetrotters with its diverse landscapes, from the Amazon rainforest to the Andes mountains and the Galápagos Islands. Rich indigenous cultures, vibrant markets, and historic cities like Quito offer an enriching mix of experiences. Explore the equatorial wonders of this compact nation, where adventure and culture intertwine.

view of cotopaxi volcano overlooking Quito

The Culture

Ecuador has a rich and diverse cultural framework that showcases the country's indigenous roots, colonial history, and contemporary influences. The nation's cultural diversity is a testament to the harmonious blend of various ethnic groups, each contributing unique elements to its overall identity.

Indigenous traditions, deeply rooted in the Andean highlands, play a pivotal role in shaping Ecuadorian culture. The Quichua-speaking communities maintain age-old customs, vibrant textiles, and intricate handicrafts, preserving their ancestral heritage. The indigenous worldview is intertwined with a profound connection to nature, evident in rituals and festivities celebrating the agricultural calendar.

The architecture of cities like Quito and Cuenca reveals the influence of the colonial era in Ecuador. Baroque churches, narrow cobblestone streets, and charming plazas highlight the Spanish influence, adding a historical layer to the cultural narrative.

Furthermore, Ecuador's diverse geography contributes to regional variations in culture. Coastal communities celebrate lively music and dance influenced by Afro-Ecuadorian rhythms, while the Amazonian regions are home to indigenous groups with unique customs and spiritual practices. Modern Ecuador embraces a dynamic blend of both traditional and contemporary influences. Festivals, such as the vibrant "Inti Raymi" and the exuberant "Carnaval," showcase the nation's zest for life and cultural diversity.

From the heights of the Andes to the lush Amazon rainforest and the Pacific shores, Ecuador's culture is a testament to the resilience and creativity of its people.

The Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Ecuador depends on the experiences you seek, as this diverse country offers a range of climates and attractions. However, a generally recommended time for globetrotters is during the dry season, which runs from June to September. This period, known as the "high season," promises clearer skies and more stable weather, making it ideal for exploring Ecuador's diverse landscapes.

June to September is particularly advantageous for exploring the Galápagos Islands, where the cooler temperatures bring a variety of wildlife to the forefront. The Amazon rainforest is also more accessible during this time, with reduced rainfall facilitating trekking and wildlife spotting.

Moreover, the famous Avenue of the Volcanoes, stretching through the Andean highlands, offers stunning views and pleasant temperatures during these months. It's essential to note that Ecuador's diverse regions exhibit microclimates, so packing layers is advisable for day-to-night temperature variations.

While the high season attracts more tourists, providing a vibrant atmosphere, globetrotters who seek a quieter experience may opt for the shoulder months of May and October. During this time, the crowds are thinner, and the weather is still favourable for exploration. Ultimately, Ecuador's year-round appeal caters to different preferences, ensuring a fulfilling travel experience whenever you choose to visit.

Things to Know

How much does a trip to ecuador typically cost.

A visit to Ecuador is known for being relatively affordable for all types of travellers. When planning a one week vacation, an individual should budget between $2,000 to $3,500, not including international airfare. It is important to note that extending a trip to include a visit to the  Galapagos Islands will add at least $1,500 per person.

What food is Ecuador known for?

Ecuador is a nation of delicious and diverse dishes. Consider trying the national dish of Ecuador,  Bolon de Verde , a large fried ball of mashed plantains filled with meat and cheese. The tender slow cooked pork dish of  Hornado de Chancho can be found in market stalls and festivals throughout the Ecuadorian Andes. Diners will find Ecuadorian aji hot sauce at nearly every meal. It is a flavourful combination of tamarillo tree tomatoes and medium spiced aji pepper.

What documentation is required to visit Ecuador?

Travellers visiting from Canada and the United States arriving in Ecuador will require a passport that is valid for six months. All visitors will be processed upon arrival with a no cost T3 visa stamp, authorizing a 90 day stay.

How do I plan a trip to Ecuador?

A trip to Ecuador should cater to your personal interests, whether its lush jungles or historic Inca ruins. Do you want to stand at the centre of the earth on the equator, or cruise the biodiverse Galapagos islands to photograph blue footed boobies? Craft your tailor-made trip to Ecuador with the help of a  Goway Destination Specialist .

What are some of the best places to visit in Ecuador?

Any nature-lover will find endless options in Ecuador, known for its four regions, the Pacific coast, the Andes, the Amazon, and the Galapagos. Walk the narrow streets in the historical city centre of Quito, renowned for the best-preserved colonial architecture in all of South America. On a visit to the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest and Yasuni National Park you might see river turtles, anacondas, and the legendary pink river dolphins. A trip to Ecuador is not complete without visiting one of its 47 volcanoes. The  Avenue of Volcanoes is a route that travels through picturesque villages and the most impressive volcano of the group, Chimborazo, is snow covered year round and stands at 20,700 ft (6,310 m) tall.

How do I visit the Galapagos Islands?

A visit to the Galapagos Islands is a once in a lifetime experience, known for its diverse and isolated wildlife. Getting to the archipelago of 19 volcanic islands 560 mi (1,000 km) off the coast of Ecuador requires a two-hour flight. Flights depart daily from both Quito and  Guayaquil . The Galapagos are a protected national park and will require a $20 Galapagos Transit Control Card to be purchased via cash only at the airport Galapagos Special Regime booth. There will also be baggage screening to ensure travellers are not carrying any organic matter such as fruits or vegetables.

What to pack for a trip to Ecuador?

Ecuador's relatively small size and namesake location along the equator makes it a comfortable destination year round, with a rainy season from October to May. Packing lightweight clothing for tropical weather, and gear for rain is important. For visits to the Andes region, as you reach higher altitudes, expect things to get cold at night.

What language is spoken in Ecuador?

The official language of Ecuador is Spanish. There are also over 20 Indigenous languages recognized, with Quechua being the most common. Travellers will find little English spoken beyond small phrases, though staff in the tourism industry may know some. Learning a handful of Spanish phrases would be helpful, along with downloading a translation app.

Is Ecuador LGBTQ+ friendly?

LGBTQ+ people are generally comfortable travelling in Ecuador. Ecuador was actually one of the first countries in the word to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. However, with its traditional religious cultural attitudes, there is still some intolerance for the LGBTQ+ community. Travellers will find public displays of affection continue to be rare. Travellers seeking out the LGBTQ+ scenes in the city of  Quito can check out the neighbourhood of La Mariscal, in and around the Plaza Foch.

What currency is used in Ecuador?

Since the year 2000, the official currency of Ecuador has been the US Dollar. This may come as a surprise to some travellers, as it can make travelling with cash easy. Plan to bring small denominations of cash or use ATMs, as credit and debit cards are not as commonly used by small vendors due to high processing fees. For larger payments such as accommodation, credit cards are widely accepted.

Food & Drink

Ecuadorian cuisine is a vibrant mix of flavours that reflects the country's rich cultural heritage and varied geography. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains, Ecuador boasts an abundance of fresh ingredients, from seafood along its coastline to highland crops in the mountainous regions.

One of the staples of Ecuadorian cuisine is "ceviche," a refreshing dish of marinated seafood typically served with plantain chips or popcorn. The coastal influence is also evident in "encocado," a coconut-infused seafood stew that tantalizes the taste buds with a perfect balance of sweet and savoury.

In the highlands, potatoes reign supreme, and the country is home to an impressive variety of native tubers. "Llapingachos," potato patties stuffed with cheese and grilled to golden perfection, are a beloved comfort food that you simply must try on your Ecuadorian adventure. Another iconic dish is "locro de papa," a hearty potato and cheese soup often garnished with avocado and served with a side of toasted corn kernels.

Ecuador's Amazon rainforest contributes unique ingredients, such as exotic fruits like "guayaba" (guava) and "chonta" (heart of palm), which find their way into various dishes. Additionally, "maito" is a traditional method of cooking fish wrapped in banana leaves, infusing it with a smoky, aromatic flavour to tickle your taste buds. To satisfy a sweet tooth, make sure you indulge in "dulce de leche" desserts like "tres leches" cake or "helado de paila," a type of hand-churned ice cream.

With its diverse culinary offerings, Ecuadorian cuisine is a delightful fusion of indigenous, Spanish, and African influences, creating a symphony of flavours that mirrors the country's cultural richness.

A wonderful destination...

Galapagos did not disappoint, I was surprised to see how underdeveloped it was. The sea lions, tortoises, birds, all such a great memory and so protected in this pristine environment. On to Guayaquil, what a pleasant surprise that city was. Make sure you spend time on the Malecon 2000 boardwalk.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Traveling to teach kids about STEM is crucial to their future. STEM activities on trips spark curiosity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and a love of learning. Transformational experiences can stimulate a child’s natural interest in the world. Moreover, parents seeking to provide their students with the best possible education can pay to write essay that blend the knowledge gained from STEM-infused travels into well-crafted academic papers. These services improve their academic success by showcasing their real-world application of STEM concepts. Professional writers create the ideal essay that both inspires students and teaches them the art of writing. So, by inspiring the next generation through STEM-infused travel and supporting their academic journey with custom essays, you’re nurturing a well-rounded and academically successful future leader.

Finally, doing STEM activities while traveling can be a very deep and rewarding experience that can make your website rank higher in Google search results. Not only will you satisfy your wanderlust, but you’ll also feed your intellectual interest if you understand the basic STEM ideas, plan carefully, and interact with your surroundings. So, pack your bags, go on a journey that includes STEM, and discover the world’s wonders while also being the best at educational travel content.
