How the Eagles Reunited for ‘Hell Freezes Over’

The Eagles ' first reunion tour was a major shock to music fans who never thought they would play together again. But their next step was more in line with what every other band has done in such a situation. On Nov. 8, 1994, they released Hell Freezes Over .

The initial end of the Eagles came with an epic meltdown  at a show in Long Beach, Calif. – often referred to as the "Long Night at Wrong Beach" – on July 31, 1980, when Don Felder and Glenn Frey almost came to physical blows. Frey took issue with Felder's reply to Sen. Alan Cranston with, “You’re welcome … I guess,” after Felder was thanked for agreeing to perform a show in Cranton's honor.

Though they kept it quiet for many months afterward, the Eagles were done. Don Henley was categorical, citing the old adage that the band would get back together "when hell freezes over." Speaking to People   in 1982, Frey remarked: “I just rule out the possibility of putting the Eagles back together for a Lost Youth and Greed tour."

Time, as the old saying goes, can heal all wounds. Four months after appearing in the video for Travis Tritt 's cover of "Take It Easy," Henley, Frey, Felder,  Joe Walsh  and  Timothy B. Schmit  agreed to perform live together for the first time in 14 years. A film studio in Burbank, Calif., was booked and over two days in April 1994, the Eagles recorded an MTV special, which resulted in the 11 live tracks found on Hell Freezes Over .

The album contained fresh takes on their classics, which included recasting "Hotel California" with acoustic guitars and Latin percussion. But the icing on the cake was the inclusion of four new studio songs: "Get Over It," "Love Will Keep Us Alive," "The Girl From Yesterday" and "Learn to Be Still."

Timed perfectly to coincide with the holiday season, the project ended up being a huge success, topping the chart for two weeks. Ultimately, Hell Freezes Over sold more than nine million copies, and the video, which had live versions of the new songs, racked up an extra 800,000. "Get Over It," "Love Will Keep Us Alive" and "Learn to Be Still" received considerable airplay at Top 40, Mainstream Rock and Adult Contemporary radio, and "The Girl From Yesterday" reached the country charts.

The tour, which began a month after the special was recorded, ended up becoming one of the most notable and financially successful in the history of rock music. Over three years, from 1994-96, the Eagles played 160 shows across the world, setting box office records at nearly every stop along the way.

29 Years Ago: The Eagles Reunite for Hell Freezes Over Tour

Twenty-nine years ago today (May 27, 1994), the Eagles reunited for the first time in 14 years to kick off their Hell Freezes Over Tour at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in Irvine, Calif. The iconic band's '94 reunion came, at least partly, thanks to a country star.

The Eagles split up in 1980, following the release of their Eagles Live album. The band's members, including Glenn Frey , Don Felder and Don Henley , had been at odds with each other since their 1979 album  The Long Run , but they were contractually obligated to their record company, Elektra Records, to record one final live album before they could disband. Unfortunately, by that time, Frey and Henley were unable to even be in the same room together, so they recorded their vocals in different studios, located in different states even.

But while the "Hotel California" singers were ready to walk away from their record-breaking career, their famous fans weren't as willing to let them go. In 1993, several country artists — including Trisha Yearwood , Diamond Rio , Alan Jackson , Tanya Tucker and Travis Tritt — recorded an Eagles tribute album, Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles ; the record, which features some of the band's biggest hits, such as "Peaceful Easy Feeling," "I Can't Tell You Why," "Heartache Tonight" and "Best of My Love," soared to the top of the charts and sold more than 3 million units. For the project, Tritt covered the Eagles' debut single, "Take It Easy," and asked the band to appear in his video for the tune; they agreed, and it was the first time that the group had been together in 13 years.

That music video shoot served as the impetus for the Eagles to consider a reunion. Only two months later, Frey and Henley had lunch with their management team and agreed to formally reunite. They performed live for the first time in April, at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, Calif., where they shot The Eagles: Hell Freezes Over -- given its name because Henley was known for saying after their split that the band would get back together "when hell freezes over" -- for an MTV special.

After beginning their Hell Freezes Over Tour, the Eagles spent most of the next two years on the trek, performing some of their most beloved tunes, including "Tequila Sunrise" and "Lyin' Eyes." Their live Hell Freezes Over album was released on Nov. 8, 1994, and includes the No. 1 hit "Love Will Keep Us Alive."

Following  Hell Freezes Over , the Eagles remained a touring and recording band and released several more albums, including 2003's The Very Best Of , which sold more than 5 million units in the United States, and a double studio album, Long Road Out of Eden , in 2007. Felder spent seven more years with the group before he was fired from the band in 2001.

Sadly, on Jan. 18, 2016, Frey died due to to complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia. Henley said that his friend and bandmate's death effectively ended the Eagles' career , but in May of 2017, Henley announced that Frey's son Deacon would perform live with the band in the future . Deacon Frey recently announced his departure from touring with the group, but  Vince Gill  continues to play as part of the band during their live shows.

Fans hoping for a reunion tour of the Eagles will get their wish: Reps for the ’70s supergroup have hired the William Morris Agency to organize dates. A tour reunion album is also being planned, providing several legal issues sur-rounding members are resolved.

As reps for every booking agency in town circled, the gig was given to agent Peter Grosslight. Several promoters have already been contacted by the agency, with a handful of dates penciled in.

Lineup for the tour, aiming for a late-May start, is expected to be Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Don Felder, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmidt. Original members Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon are not expected to participate.

“We still got the magic,” said Walsh, who joined the group in 1976 and toured promoting the 1979 release “The Long Run,” its final outing before disbanding in 1982. “As soon as the non-art form issues are resolved, we’ll be out there,” he said, referring to legal entanglements.

Popular on Variety

Henley last year sued Geffen Records, seeking termination of his recording contract, and has told the label not to expect any future albums.

On Friday, MCA sued Frey, seeking $ 5 million in damages, saying the singer owes them several more albums.

In a letter to MCA last month, Frey said he would no longer record for the label and sought to have his recording contract terminated. In its suit, MCA asked the court to bar Frey from recording for anyone else.

Sources said the tour isn’t likely to be held up by the legal wranglings, but plans for a live reunion-tour album may have difficulty getting off the ground.

From 1972 to the early ’80s, the Eagles were one of the top rock bands of the era advancing the countrified-rock genre. Its signature sound on “Best of My Love,””Hotel California” and “One of These Nights” helped the band score a slew of chart-topping singles and multiplatinum albums.

Former Eagles manager Irving Azoff, now owner of Giant Records, is spearheading the tour and album effort. He also manages Henley.

Azoff has been characteristically tightlipped, but a source involved in planning said the tour is “gonna go. While it may get complicated trying to get the clearances for Henley and Frey to participate in an album, the tour is something everyone wants to happen — even outsiders of the Azoff camp.”

The popularity of the Eagles is seemingly at an all-time high, thanks to “Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles.” The album has sold over 3 million copies.

EARLY PERFORMANCES

This sections includes some of Randy’s earliest known performances, including gigs with his first band The Deacons, later known as The Thunderbirds.

THE DRIVIN’ DYNAMICS

At age 15, Randy was one of the four founding members of The Dynamics (later known as The Drivin’ Dynamics), a popular band from Scottsbluff, Nebraska. The other three original members were Richard Rohnke, John Ankeny and Larry Soto. Later members, during Randy’s tenure, were Paul Asmus, Bobby Soto, Steve Cassells and David Margheim. Randy performed with the band from 1961 to the Spring of 1966. Note: There are newspaper ads around that show “The Dynamics” performing at dances in Crete, Wilber, and Howells, which are cities in eastern Nebraska. This was probably the band from Omaha who went by the same name.

SOUL SURVIVORS/THE POOR

In the Spring of 1966, Randy joined a Denver band called The Soul Survivors. Shortly thereafter they moved to Los Angeles and changed their name to The Poor. They disbanded in 1968. Read more about The Poor here .

The band that would become known as Poco was founded in 1968 by Richie Furay, Jim Messina, Rusty Young, George Grantham, and Randy Meisner. For the dates below, the band performed under their original name, Pogo, with the exception of a couple of early dates where they were billed as RFD.

RICK NELSON & THE STONE CANYON BAND

In March 1969, Randy joined Rick Nelson and brought along two former members of The Poor–Allen Kemp and Pat Shanahan–to form The Stone Canyon Band. Randy left the band following the European tour. In his absence he was replaced by Phil “Fang” Volk from Paul Revere & The Raiders and later, Tim Cetera. Randy returned to the band in the Fall of 1970 for a tour and to record Rudy The Fifth . Read more here .

Additional dates for Rick Nelson & The Stone Canyon Band can be found below (after Goldrush).

Following his departure from Rick Nelson’s Stone Canyon Band, Randy formed a band in Scottsbluff, NE called Goldrush. The other members, Steve Love, Dan Rossi, Bill Schulz and Mark Jarosz were students at the local Hiram Scott College, where Randy’s wife, Jennifer, worked as a secretary. When Randy rejoined the Stone Canyon Band in the Fall of 1970, he took the members of Goldrush with him to Los Angeles. He had hoped to keep the band going in California, but it fizzled out soon after. Steve Love eventually replaced Randy in the Stone Canyon Band in 1971 when he left to join Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Bernie Leadon to form the Eagles.

Randy rejoined the Stone Canyon Band in late 1970 for a short tour and an album, Rudy The Fifth . When he left the band for good in the Spring of 1971, Stephen Love, from Goldrush, took his place.

JAMES TAYLOR

Randy played bass on two songs on Taylor’s landmark 1970 album, Sweet Baby James . Randy’s inclusion in the following concert appearance might be mistake on the part of the reviewer, but it will remain as part of the archive until proven otherwise (see notes for more info).

Randy was one of the four founding members of the Eagles in 1971. He remained with the group until the end of the Hotel California tour in 1977.

Some sources wrongly claim that the four original Eagles first played together as part of Linda Ronstadt’s backing band at Disneyland on June 12th, 1971. However, only Don Henley & Glenn Frey were part of her backing band at this gig. Bernie Leadon joined them onstage as a guest. Randy Meisner was NOT present.

SOLO CAREER

eagles tour 1992

Following Randy’s departure from the Eagles, he went on a very brief tour in support of his first solo album, Randy Meisner . His touring band included Kerry Morris on bass, Steve Edwards on guitar and vocals, Kelly Shanahan on drums (no relation to Pat Shanahan), Peter Reilich on keyboards, Scott Shelly on guitar, Don Ullstrom on guitar and vocals, and Joel Peskin on sax and flute. Following this short five-venue tour, Randy did not perform again for nearly two-and-a-half years.

Randy returned to touring in support his second album, One More Song , in 1981. His new backing band, The Silverados, included: Sterling Smith on keyboards, Craig Hull on guitar, Bryan Garofalo on bass, Craig Krampf on drums, Don Francisco on percussion, and Terese Heston on vocals. The band name, only used for this tour, was taken from a lyric in the title track of the album.

Randy revamped his backing band for this tour. Sterling Smith remained on keyboards. The other members included: Dixon House on keyboards, Howard Leese on guitar, John Corey on guitar, Tom Erak on bass, and Denny Carmassi on drums.

The group Black Tie was a trio comprised of Randy, Billy Swan, and Jimmy Griffin. For a couple of these dates, former Eagle Bernie Leadon appeared as a guest.

ROBERTS-MEISNER BAND

In early 1987, Randy joined Rick Roberts formerly of The Flying Burrito Brothers and Firefall, to form the Roberts-Meisner Band. They performed together for the next two years. Randy left when he was offered the chance to rejoin Poco.

eagles tour 1992

The original members of Poco reunited, made an album ( Legacy ), and went on tour. Randy remained with the band until 1991.

eagles tour 1992

MEISNER, SWAN & RICH (aka MEISNER, RICH & SWAN)

In 1991, Randy rejoined Black Tie with Jimmy Griffin, Billy Swan, and new member, Charlie Rich, Jr. The band recorded a few songs for a potential second album, which never materialized, although one single, “I’m Sure Of You” was released. The group disbanded in 1992 with Jimmy Griffin focusing on his new group, The Remingtons. The remaining band members decided to form a group of their own. The band went through some name changes, including The Randy Meisner Band and Kindred Spirits, eventually settling on Meisner, Rich & Swan. The group toured together until 1996. They also recorded songs for an album that wasn’t released until 2001. A note about the name change: The band’s name was unintentionally changed to Meisner, Swan & Rich due to a CD labeling mishap in 2001, when the band was no longer performing together. I have chosen to use their original band name for this archive unless otherwise noted.
