5ᵗʰ Anniversary Whisky Release

Available to order online and instore at 8am on April 1, 2024

On April 1, 2019, Patent 5 Distillery officially opened our doors to the public. To celebrate our anniversary, we have created the first release of our Patent 5 Anniversary Series. The Anniversary Series features the oldest and rarest barrels in our collection. With a focus on cask finishes and higher strength whisky, every Anniversary Series release will be one to remember. Cheers to another year, and cheers to History Distilled.

Our 5th Anniversary edition whisky was aged for three years in new charred white oak and finished in a French oak Pedro Ximenez Sherry cask for nearly two years. This Anniversary release was recently awarded silver medals in both the World Whisky Awards and the Canadian Whisky Awards. Bottled at 52.6% with notes of cherry cola, ripe dates and vanilla this whisky has a sweet, complex nose that leads to a bold, rich and spicy palate, with a lingering finish.

Manitoba’s ONLY Rum. Rum Release #3

Available to order online February 26 or instore purchase March 1, 2024

Our rum is crafted using a unique combination of Crosby’s fancy grade and blackstrap molasses. We distill and ferment the molasses to preserve the character and flavor – a very slow process, worth the wait for a flavorful rum. We age the rum in casks that were used once to age a double-oak bourbon.

This third release of our rum has been aged for just over 2 years. Double distilled in our custom copper still in traditional Jamaican-style, this release is a full-flavoured, yet smooth rum. Enjoy it in your favourite tropical cocktail or on ice.

Notes of cola and burnt sugar, in addition to a hint of oak. Serve in your favorite cocktail or enjoy neat or on ice to savor the flavours.

Nestled on the edge of Lake Winnipeg, Crown Royal’s distillery in Gimli, Manitoba, is home to 1.5 million barrels of delicious whisky that sit patiently waiting to be shared with the world. One of Manitoba’s natural beauties, the town of Gimli hugs the western shoreline of one of the world’s largest freshwater lakes, with sandy beaches, an active harbor and the largest Icelandic population outside of Iceland.

distillery tour winnipeg

Our property stretches over 360 scenic acres with 51 warehouses (which house more barrels of whisky than there are people in Manitoba) and one stillhouse (which serves as a landmark from the lake so fisherman can return safely to harbor). The distillery employs roughly 76 people who distill, mature, blend and run Crown Royal’s 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operation – oftentimes following in the footsteps of generations of family members who made Crown Royal before them. They’re passionate in the craft of whisky-making and they’re proud to share the smoothest, finest Canadian whisky adorers have come to know and love since 1939.

With such an expansive footprint and operation, we’ve taken steps to minimize the impact our Gimli distillery has on its surrounding environment. We’ve reduced carbon emissions by more than 99% over the past 10 years. In 2016 we reduced water utilization by 35%, saving 50 million gallons. And we are committed to a target of zero waste to landfill by 2020, with a reduction of 49% in 2016.

Our History

A lifetime of experience goes into every bottle of Crown Royal.

Nestled along the western shore of Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba lies the small village of Gimli.

Our Process

Fifty of the finest whiskies are meticulously blended to create the signature smoothness of Crown Royal.

Microbreweries and Distilleries in Winnipeg, Manitoba

* The information below was accurate before the pandemic shutdown. Please check with each company to determine when they are re-opening for tastings and if anything has changed.

You may know that the distillery that makes all of the Crown Royal Whiskey for Diageo is located 1 hour north of Winnipeg in Gimli, Manitoba.  Unfortunately, they do not offer tours or tastings.

The Manitoba Government recently implemented some financial incentives to help create new microbreweries and distilleries and, in our opinion, it has been a great success so far.

Most of these places have tasting rooms where you can purchase flights of samples.

Some offer guided tours and free samples in hopes that you buy a bottle or two.

Some offer a limited food menu and entertainment as well to encourage you to hang around and buy the drinks directly from them.

In some cases, they have limited production recipes that you can only try at their tasting room.

We strongly recommend that Winnipeggers try some of these alcoholic beverages to support the local economy. They are as good as or better than most National brands.

Visitors to Winnipeg should try to experience some great Winnipeg-made beers and spirits, many of which are only available in Manitoba.

Many local Winnipeg restaurants will serve these local products, so you don’t have to go to the tasting rooms if you don’t have time.

Some of these businesses even give you the option to order the alcohol to be delivered to you.

Microbreweries

Craft beers are delicious and becoming very popular around the world. When we travel, we usually try to order a local craft beer made wherever we are.

The following microbreweries do not have free or regular scheduled public tours and charge for samples in their tasting rooms:

  • Barn Hammer Brewing ,
  • Brazen Hall Kitchen & Brewery ,
  • Devil May Care Brewing ,
  • Kilter Brewing ,
  • Lake of the Woods Brewing Company (offers tours for $12),
  • Little Brown Jug Brewing ,
  • One Great City Brewing ,
  • Sookrams Brewing ,
  • Stone Angel Brewing ,
  • Torque Brewing , and
  • Trans Canada Brewing .

The oldest microbrewery in Manitoba is Fort Garry Brewing , which started in 1930. It is no longer locally owned. They don’t have a tasting room, but we have seen signs on their property indicating that they are building one. Kevin really likes their Fort Garry Dark English Mild Ale.

Our favourite microbrewery is Half Pints Brewing , which has free tours on Saturdays with free samples during and after the tour.  Half Pints also has a tasting room to purchase more of their many delicious beers such as St. James Pale Ale and Little Scrapper IPA on tap or buy some bottles, growlers or kegs to bring home.

La Brasserie Nonsuch Brewing ’s tasting room is more like a lounge with a cool modern vibe and lots of seating to enjoy flights of their products like ale, Belgian blonde, chambiere (sparkling beer), pilsner, porter, saison, sours, stout, and tripel.  This venue has a cosmopolitan vibe where you would want to hang out with friends for the night.

Winnipeg Brewery Tours

If you are driving with a designated driver or taking a taxi or ride share, we suggest you visit these breweries in groups based on their location.  In that case, you would probably want to do 3 trips as follows:

Trip 1 – West locations – Barn Hammer, Devil May Care, Half Pints, One Great City, Torque.

Trip 2 – Central locations – Kilter, Lake of the Woods, Little Brown Jug, Nonsuch

Trip 3 – South locations – Brazen Hall, Sookrams, Stone Angel, Trans Canada

I also found several Winnipeg tour operators that offer tours of the breweries, in which case you wouldn’t have to worry about having a designated driver or getting lost.  Check out these options:

  • Winnipeg Trolley Company Brewery Tours ,
  • Breakaway Experiences Winnipeg Brewery Tour , and
  • Winnipeg Tasting Tours – Original Microbrewery Tour – Brews Cruise .

Winnipeg Distilleries

Capital K Distillery , Manitoba’s first family owned and operated producer of craft spirits such as Vodka, Rye, and Gin, offers a tour & tasting (no food service) for $5 with a $5 credit towards any purchase. Capital K won big at the Canadian Artisian Spirit Competition in 2019, including Gold, Best in Class for Tall Grass Dill Pickle Vodka and Gold with distinction for Tall Grass Gin .

Patent 5 Distillery has free tours, free samples and sells Charcuterie boards and cocktails made from their Gin and Vodka in their elegant old-fashioned tasting room in the Exchange District. We recommend you try one of their Gins.  American Distilling Institute awarded Patent 5 the Gold Medal, Best of Class and Best of Category for its Vodka and a Silver Medal, Best of Category for its Navy Strength Gin in 2020 .

Wineries and Meaderies

Shrugging Doctor is creating some innovative products. It also has a lounge that serves their wines, meads, sangria and ciders.

In 2019, Bee Boyzz Honey & Meadery opened Manitoba’s first and only bee-to-bottle meadery, creating traditional, melomel, and metheglin meads with their own honey and locally sourced fruit. Unfortunately, they don’t have a tasting room yet, so you’ll have to pick it up at the liquor store.

Happy Travels,

Kevin & Tina

You would love Canada. The foods and alcohol is probably very different from where you come from. You should really try products from some of the breweries in Winnipeg and distilleries in Winnipeg if you can’t travel here to do some tastings in their tasting rooms.

Canada has been on my list to travel to for a while now. That’s an awesome thing to do. I’m glad it’s successful so far.

The government support and incentives have helped the distilleries and microbreweries in Winnipeg succeed and thrive and produce some excellent beer and alcoholic spirits. We hope you can sample some in their tasting rooms one day.

These sound absolutely brilliant. Love a good microbrewery, we’re lucky to have quite a few on our doorstep over here. Sounds like you’ve got a fantastic selection to choose from in Winnipeg – will definitely need to check out a couple if we find ourselves over that way.

You will love the microbreweries in Winnipeg. There are only a few distilleries in Winnipeg, but they are award-winning and delicious too. We hope you visit us someday.

Capital K Distillery: From Grain to Bottle in Winnipeg

Capital K Distillery in Winnipeg is Manitoba’s first grain-to-bottle craft distillery. Founded and owned by Jason Kang, Capital K is also Manitoba’s first family-owned and operated micro distillery. With such distinction comes tremendous pressure for Kang to deliver exceptional products – but deliver he does.

Jason Kang of Capital K Distillery | Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Capital K Distillery has a short but interesting history. It started in 2015 when Kang secured a space in a Winnipeg industrial park. He began distilling the following year, with his Tall Grass Vodka hitting the shelves in fall of 2016 and Tall Grass Gin in January 2017.

Kang single-handedly manages all stages of production, from the sourcing of only local grains and fruits, to bottling, corking, and applying Tall Grass labels by hand. Capital K Distillery truly is a hands-on, one-man operation. Judging by Kang’s dedication to the craft and his attention to detail, one might assume he has been involved in distilling for quite some time. Wrong. His previous careers include commercial diver, convenience store clerk, and engineering student, among others. His background in homebrewing is what started him on the road to distilling, and eventually to opening up Capital K.

Capital K Distillery tasting room. Capital K Distillery | Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

That road hasn’t been easy, though. When it comes to beer and liquor, Manitoba is the most controlled province in Canada (even more so than any U.S. state). In January 2016, the government of Manitoba introduced Supporting Manitoba Craft Brewing Strategy, a $5 million economic incentive loan program intended to develop and stimulate the production of craft beer and spirits in the province. Kang had been relying on the $250,000 low-interest loan to get Capital K up and running. But in December of 2016, the newly elected Progressive Conservative government reviewed, and then eventually canceled, the Supporting Manitoba Craft Brewing Strategy. It left Kang, and many other Manitoba craft brewers and distillers, mired in uncertainty.

While such a setback may have caused others to call it quits, Kang pressed on. His perseverance has paid off and the proof is in the pudding – or, in this case, the bottles. As of press time, Capital K Distillery is producing its two flagship spirits, Tall Grass Vodka and Tall Grass Gin. Both are made of 100% non-GMO, Manitoba grains, and Kang feels strongly about extracting and finding all the necessary flavor from only the grains.

While there are plans to begin making diffused vodkas using only natural ingredients, Kang vows to not create any type of “flavored” vodka that would require added sugars or artificial ingredients. Tall Grass Vodka is luxuriously smooth with a flavor profile similar to whiskey but without the barrel flavor. This is a direct result of the 95% wheat and 5% rye recipe being filtered through a 20-plate still, thereby purifying the spirit twenty times, which is far beyond the industry standard. In addition to the increased purification, the custom distilling process moves much more slowly. According to Kang, the slower process stretches the liquid, which allows him to extract the methanol, or “bad alcohol”, as he describes it. The finished product is 40% alcohol and, due to the low methanol levels, Kang claims it does not result in hangovers. How’s that for a selling point?

Fermenting tanks at Capital K Distillery | Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Tall Grass Gin is produced using the same custom-engineered purification process and 20-plate distilling column as the vodka. In fact, the gin is made from the vodka. After the spirit has been diluted to 50%, Kang adds a proprietary ten-ingredient botanical component. It soaks for 24 hours, is distilled one last time, diluted to 45% alcohol, and then bottled by hand. The finished product is wonderfully soft and aromatic. With hints of the requisite juniper, along with other flavors like orange peel and cardamom, the exquisite quality of Tall Grass Gin makes it appealing to casual gin cocktail enthusiasts as well as gin aficionados.

Capital K Distillery welcomes tours and tastings at any time, though advance reservations for groups of six or more are recommended. The unassuming space, in an industrial area of Winnipeg, could be easily missed and it is not at all representative of the bold and extraordinary products crafted within. Be sure to take part in a distillery tour by Kang himself and witness his genuine passion for his craft.
