Hollie Bond and her ten-month-old daughter Margot tested out the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light during their travels to see how it fared.

The BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light gets our vote as the best travel cot to buy if you're looking for something super easy to assemble. Flying long-haul and want the assurance that your cot will be a doddle to set up? This is the one to buy.

It's a very good option for a lightweight travel cot, because it is really easy to transport, looks stylish, and, most importantly for frazzled parents, it is extremely easy to assemble and put back down. It comes with a comfortable mattress and mattress cover included, along with a handy bag that ‘it’s really easy to fit back in,’ according to our tester, Hollie.

She found the low base a bit off-putting as you have to bend over quite a way to put your child into the cot, but this also means it doubles up as a playpen. ‘I took the cot to my parents' house to use as a playpen and it worked a treat, keeping Margot safely away from all the delicate antiques and trinkets,’ she says. 

While at the pricier end of the spectrum, Hollie thinks it's well worth the extra money because of the quality of the fabric and materials used.

Our tester Hollie’s first impression of the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light was that it lived up to its name - it arrived in a smart bag with a useful carry handle and is indeed very light. ‘In the past, I've had to wrestle with travel cots and spent ages trying to get the knack of putting them up, but with this cot, I managed to assemble it in seconds with one hand while holding my baby and without reading any instructions,’ she says. ‘It's very intuitive and just folds out into shape straightaway.’ 

As well as the cot itself, this travel cot comes with a ‘surprisingly spongy and soft’ mattress and a fitted cot sheet. The mattress is attached to the cot via little tabs that go through the cot lining and fasten to the frame.

‘This cot doesn't come with a bassinet option and is very low to the ground, so it was quite a stretch to place Margot down onto the mattress, so I wouldn't recommend it for parents with back problems,’ adds Hollie. ‘Luckily, the days of me having to stroke Margot's back to get her to sleep are over too, as that would have been a problem.’ There is a flip side to the low base, however – it means the travel cot can double up as a playpen when you’re travelling or even at home.

Comfort and features

Our tester was impressed by the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light’s mattress and apparently, her daughter was too. ‘The mattress is well padded and as soon as I put Margot in the cot she had a lie down and snuggled in,’ says Hollie. ‘She slept as well in it as she does in her more sturdy and higher up cot at home, and had enough space to move around in her sleep comfortably.’

As you’d expect from the BabyBjörn brand, the quality of the cot is excellent. ‘I loved that it felt sturdy and solid even though it's lightweight,’ adds Hollie. She also liked the mesh sides which meant that she could keep an eye on Margot as she slept but they didn’t let too much light in.

This travel cot is designed for newborns through to three-year-olds, which Hollie did find a bit optimistic. ‘My now-four-year-old son definitely wouldn't have fitted in it at three and probably would have grown out of it by the age of two.’

Value for money

At £220, this travel cot doesn’t come cheap but our tester feels it's worth the money. ‘It has a lot of high-quality features - such as the smart carry bag and padded mattress - that you'd look for in a top-of-the-range travel cot,’ she says. The fact that it doubles up as a playpen also adds to the value.

Hollie would recommend the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light to anyone planning to do lots of travelling with their baby and says it'll particularly appeal to parents who like baby products to look good, but also work really well.

Came in store to look at the BB travel cot, staff were so helpful in comparing the different cots on offer but we decided this was the perfect fit for us. Less bulky than the others, light and the mattress seems the most comfortable compared to others on the market. Another plus is i don't feel like im bending down too far to pick up Little one.

This is a necessity for travelling. It folds very compact and has handles to make it easy to carry around. Don't even need to check it in becuase of the size. This BabyBjorn travel cot is great.

The Baby Bjorn Travel Cot Light is a compact, portable baby bed and is a breeze to put up, even one handed. However, its size means you could need to check it in as separate luggage if you’re flying off abroad.

The Travel Cot Light isn’t necessarily a new product for the big name in baby carriers , Baby Bjorn. It has been sold elsewhere in the world, but it wasn’t until early 2011 that it reached us in the UK, because of the different fire safety standards we have for products.

The Baby Bjorn Travel Cot Light weighs only 5kg, including its carry case. It boasts an ease-to-erect design and a mattress with built-in base. It’s this mattress that keeps the Travel Cot Light on the floor once its up.

Baby Bjorn says the Travel Cot Light can be used for newborns through to children around 3 years of age. I tested it with my baby Ted, 4 months, and my toddler Jack, 30 months. The size of the cot was great for baby Ted, with plenty of wriggle room, but Jack would soon grow out of it. Jack also worked out how to climb out of it, although to be fair Baby Bjorn doesn’t recommend using the cot for a child over 35 inches tall.

What we love

The quality of this item is superb, which means it should last you through a few kids and still be available to pass on to a friend.

The mattress is well padded and baby Ted seemed very comfortable in it. That said, it was quite a stretch to get him out because it doesn’t feature a bassinet, which might be a consideration if you have a bad back.

A useful feature is the angled sides, which would make the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light easier to cram into a small space than my current model, which is fairly bulky. The sides are mesh, which means it is easy to see what your baby is up to.

The fabric is nice and soft, so would feel nice against your baby's skin. Also, all fabrics that come into contact with your baby’s skin are free from any harmful substances. The breathable cotton mattress cover and the fabric on the exterior of the cot are removable and machine washable.

The Baby Bjorn Travel Cot Light is extremely easy to put up – important when trying to put your baby down quickly and quietly in a new place.

The carry case actually features proper handles, so unlike my current travel cot, it is extremely portable.

What to watch out for

The Baby Bjorn Travel Cot Light comes in a robust carry case, which means it is easy to cart about, although the cot in its bag is fairly bulky. Because of its size it wouldn’t be possible to pack it into anything but the most enormous suitcase. The carry case is so sturdy it would survive the experience of airport baggage handling, although the extra costs of transportation on some budget airlines might put some parents off.

The price tag of this travel cot is eye watering and I’m not entirely sure what the user is paying for. This is especially important for those who want to take a travel cot abroad - it would need to be checked in as luggage and it might take quite a battering in transit, something that may not bother you with a cheaper cot but which could matter when you’ve spent this sum.

As travel cots go, the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light is one of the best I’ve tested. My two-year-old often struggles with new sleep environments, but she slept soundly and comfortably with every use. 

The BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light takes less than a minute to set up, making it one of the quickest travel cots to assemble, and it’s also simple to take down. 

It comes with its own carry bag, which you carry like a briefcase, and it’s lightweight enough at only 6kg to transport easily, whether you’re staying overnight at the grandparents’ or going on a long haul family holiday . While I wouldn’t call it compact width-wise, the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light is shallow depth when folded means you can easily fit it into a small car boot and stack other travel items on top.

I like that the travel cot comes as part of a bundle, with a mattress and fitted sheet included, however there is still the option to buy the Travel Cot Light without a fitted sheet should you prefer.

The travel cot mattress is one of the thickest and comfiest my toddler has slept on, despite sitting at ground level, and the cot has mesh sides that make it airy and breathable. 

Overall, after three months of testing, I think the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light is a worthwhile purchase - but only if you have the budget.

How we tested the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light

I tested the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light for three months with my two-year-old toddler. It was used for naps and overnight stays with the grandparents, taken on a weekend break to Cornwall and on a week-long family holiday to the Netherlands. 

How easy is the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light to assemble and fold? 

The BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light is one of (if not the ) easiest travel cot I’ve ever assembled. All in all, it took me less than a minute to set up when following the instructions, and is so intuitive that I didn’t have to look at the instructions again after that.

The cot folds in half to be transported in its carry bag, so you simply need to unfold it, pull each of the four legs out so they click into place, insert the mattress and clip the red mattress connectors to each of the legs to keep it securely in place.

Taking the Travel Cot Light down requires a bit more effort, but again takes only a couple of minutes. You take the mattress out, unclip the red connectors, pull each leg up to fold them into the middle of the cot, fold the cot in half, place the mattress around the frame, and put everything into the carry bag. 

I found the main fold to be a little stiff and needed help placing the travel cot with the mattress wrapped around it into the carry bag. It’s a tight fit so can be a little unwieldy to do by yourself.

How big is the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light?

When folded, the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light measures 49 x 60 x 14cm, which makes it fairly compact. 

When unfolded the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light measures 82 x 112 x 64cm, which is similar to other travel cots I’ve tried, such as the Red Kite Sleeptight . My two-year-old toddler is tall for her age but fit the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light well, with extra room that will allow her to reach the cot's maximum age limit.

How heavy is the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light?

The BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light is the lightest travel cot I’ve used. Weighing just 6kg (with the carry bag), it’s lighter than other top travel cots including the Bugaboo Stardust , Silver Cross Slumber , Joie kubbie™ Sleep and Graco FoldLite LX .

How easy is the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light to transport?

In the carry bag, the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light looks like an extra-large rectangular briefcase so is very easy to carry with the two carry straps. 

It’s shallow enough in depth to fit neatly into the boot of my Volvo V40, with enough room to stack other travel items, such as a cabin bag or even a small lightweight buggy like the Babyzen Yoyo , on top.

How comfortable is the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light?

My two-year-old sometimes struggles to sleep in new environments, but she had no trouble with the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light. 

The mattress and base is around 3cm in thickness and is one of the more padded yet firm travel cot mattresses I have used. I tested out the bundle, which came with a fitted cotton sheet, which was both soft and ideal for my daughter’s eczema-prone skin. 

All the materials used for the travel cot meet the requirements of OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class 1, which means that they are kind to the skin and safe to taste. The cot fabric and mattress cover are both made of 100% polyester, the cot frame is painted steel and the mattress is 100% polyether foam.

The mesh sides allow for optimum airflow and increased comfort, as well as enabling you to see your baby or toddler easily while they sleep and for them to see you when they are awake.

Unfortunately the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light doesn’t have a newborn bassinet like you see on other travel cots like the Silver Cross Slumber . This means that your newborn will be sleeping closer to the ground and you’ll need to bend more to put them in and take them out.

How sturdy is the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light?

Very. The four legs angle outwards so that the travel cot stays firmly in place, even if bumped into, and the mattress (once inserted) successfully keeps all four mesh sides taut. 

In terms of safety, BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light complies with the EN 716 safety standard for folding cots as well as national fire safety requirements.

Does the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light work as a playpen?

While not strictly advertised as a playpen , the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light is a safe place for your child to play for short periods of time.

How easy is the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light to clean?

While I haven’t yet needed to clean the mattress cover or cot fabric (just the fitted cotton sheets), both can be machine-washed with a mild laundry detergent at 40°C. The mattress cover can also be tumble dried (the cot fabric can’t).

The travel cot fabric is attached to the steel frame with zips, so is simple to remove and put back on after washing.

Is the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light good value for money?

At £249 as part of a bundle or £220 without the fitted sheet, the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light is one of the more expensive travel cots on the market. 

While I think it’s 100% worth it for its safety credentials and ease of use, the mattress sits close to the ground and there’s no option to insert a newborn bassinet, so it’s less tailored to newborns than other travel cots.
