All Aboard!
Your astronomy adventure begins in Bergen, the cultural gateway to the fjords and the second-largest city in Norway. If you’ve time before your ship departs, visit the UNESCO-listed wharfs of the colourful Bryggen district with its artisan shops and cobblestone streets. Just across the street is the famous Fish Market which serves delicious seafood or venture to the Fløibanen funicular which whisks you up Mount Fløyen for breath-taking views of the city.
Make yourself at home onboard the ship and enjoy the relaxed ambience, taking the opportunity to meet your fellow guests and astronomers.
A day for masterpieces
Arrive at the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund, renowned for its stunning and picturesque architecture. Take time to explore the city and its rich Norse history or visit Atlanterhavsparken, one of the largest saltwater aquariums in Northern Europe. You can also make your way up to small Mount Aksla for a panorama of the town and its picturesque position surrounded by islands.
In the afternoon, we reach the port of Molde and the amazing view of 222 mountain peaks across the fjord, called the ‘Molde Panorama’.
The Royal City of Trondheim
As we journey north, we reach the medieval city of Trondheim, a vibrant mix of historic civic architecture and a bustling student population. Nidaros Cathedral is considered one of the most sacred buildings in all of Norway and rightly nicknamed ‘Norway’s Notre Dame’. Whilst here, take the time to visit the Archbishop’s Palace to view Norway’s crown jewels.
Not far from Nidaros Cathedral is Gamle Bybro, a charming wooden bridge that sits over River Nid and marks the entrance to the old Hanseatic district of Bakklandet. This neighbourhood features colourful wooden wharves that stand on stilts and host some of the city’s most trendy eateries, making Bakklandet a key destination for all foodies.
Welcome to the Arctic!
In the early hours of the morning, the ship crosses the Arctic Circle and enters the Arctic. Join us out on deck to mark the moment with a traditional ceremony that will be sure to wake you up fully! Above the Arctic Circle, your chances of spotting the majestic Northern Lights increase.
As we call into the northern city of Bodø, gaze up at the snow-capped Børvass peaks before experiencing the fabulous street art this city has to offer. From here, we continue across the Vestfjord and towards the Lofoten archipelago which greets you with the stunning sight of the 1,000 metre-high Lofoten Wall.
Expand your Northern Lights knowledge
Welcome to the historic Arctic exploration capital of Tromsø, a hive of culture, history and Northern Lights knowledge.
Today you will visit the Science Museum of Northern Norway, learning more about the Northern Lights through a range of exhibits and installations. As part of this trip, you’ll stop at The Planetarium and its full-dome ceiling offering 360-degree views and high-quality digital projectors showing daily films about 'Experiencing the Aurora' and the constellations. Our expert astronomers will be joining you on the trip so make sure to ask them lots of questions!
The Northern Lights and the North Cape
As we reach Honningsvåg, at the top of the European mainland, be sure to visit the globe monument at the North Cape. This is a popular excursion, so make sure you book early!
From Honningsvåg, look out for the striking rock formation called Finnkirka near the entrance to Kjøllefjord village. The building-like pillars were once an ancient sacrificial site for the indigenous nomadic Sámi people who still inhabit and herd reindeer in the region today. As we continue north towards Kirkenes, we sail past Slettnes Lighthouse, the northernmost lighthouse in continental Europe.
To the top and back again
By breakfast, we will have reached the top of Norway and the town of Kirkenes, situated just a few kilometres from the border. It is at this point of our coastal voyage that we turn and return south. The ports we visited at night are now seen during the day for a full Norwegian coastal experience.
Once the northernmost town in the world, (before Longyearbyern, Svalbard) Hammerfest is a key destination for Astronomy lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Be sure to trek up Mount Salen, for views over the town and picturesque landscapes. You can also take a moment to see the UNESCO-listed Meridian Column which commemorates the first-ever measurement of the globe.
As we sail, keep your eyes open for the Northern Lights, but you might also spot pods of Orcas and Humpback Whales migrating to these waters to feed on herring.
Welcome to Lofoten
Passing through the legendary Lofoten and Vesterålen archipelagos, the ship negotiates an intricate network of inlets and isles through one of the most beautiful stretches of the Norwegian coast. From here, the coastal landscape changes from rolling hills to soaring mountains.
Along this stretch of coastline is where The Hurtigruten Coastal Express story began, in the coastal town of Stokmarknes in 1893. Don’t miss the newly opened Hurtigrutemuseet in Stokmarknes, a museum dedicated to The Coastal Express housed in the full-sized and fully restored ship MS Finnmarken from 1952.
A date with the Seven Sisters
Leave behind the magic of the Arctic Circle and head towards the ports of Bodø and Ørnes. Marvel at the Seven Sisters mountain range where local legend has it seven beautiful troll princesses, fleeing from an unwanted suitor, got caught out as the sun rose, turning them into the seven beautiful mountains you see today.
The landscapes will continue to amaze you! Don’t miss views of the Torghatten Mountain, with its distinctive hole right through the centre. There is a local legend as to why and how this mountain came to have such a hole. Make sure you ask your Coastal Experience Team about it!
The old cities and the sea
An early morning arrival in Trondheim will give you time to further explore the city and discover any sites you might have missed on the northbound section of the journey. Some insider advice: treat yourself to a barista-brewed coffee and Nordic patisserie in one of the many cafés in the Bakklandet district before walking up to Kristiansten Fort for great views over the city.
In the afternoon, we dock at Kristiansund, a quaint harbour town spread over three islands. Meander along the cobbled streets of the old town and be sure to sample the local delicacy of klippfisk, salted cod that’s dried on the surrounding cliffs.
The final chapter of the fairytale
A few nautical miles are left between you and Bergen today as your Astronomy Voyage draws to a close. Before we say our goodbyes, we voyage across the mouth of Sognefjord, the longest and widest fjord in the whole of Norway.
As we arrive in Bergen, it’s time to say goodbye to the Captain, crew and astronomers who have accompanied you on this unique voyage along Norway’s spectacular coastline. However, if you aren’t ready to leave Norway just yet, there are plenty of extension options that will make your trip that extra bit more special.
We have several ships in the fleet that we travel with.
MS Nordnorge
MS Nordnorge is aptly named for northern Norway, most of which lies above the Arctic Circle.
MS Kong Harald
Norway’s reigning monarch, a seasoned sailor, lends his name to this remarkable hybrid vessel.
Both the name and the interior design of this modern ship are inspired by the spectacular Northern Lights.

Passengers sailing in Arctic waters for the first time are given an Arctic Circle baptism by Njord, the ruler of the Seven Seas. This comes in the form of an ice cube down your front or back, but is entirely optional.
As you call into the northern city of Bodø, gaze up at the snow-capped Børvass peaks before experiencing the fabulous street art this city has to offer. From here, you continue across the Vestfjord and towards the Lofoten archipelago which greets you with the stunning sight of the 1,000 metre-high Lofoten Wall

Following the scenic sailing through Magerøysund and after an early stop in Hammerfest, you arrive in Honningsvåg. This small port is the gateway to the wonders of the spectacular North Cape which rises 300m from the ocean, and at 71° 10' 21" north it puts you a mere 2,000 kilometres from the Geographical North Pole. Standing atop the North Cape Plateau you'll get the eerie feeling of being at the end of the world.
From Honningsvåg, look out for the striking rock formation called Finnkirka near the entrance to Kjøllefjord village. The building-like pillars were once an ancient sacrificial site for the indigenous nomadic Sámi people who still inhabit and herd reindeer in the region today.

The last port on the Hurtigruten Voyage North is Kirkenes. And at longitude 30 east, you are actually further east than Istanbul and St. Petersburg. The well-policed Russian border and the Kola peninsula are close by which explains why the road signs are written in both Norwegian and Russian.
Being at the north-easterly terminus of Hurtigruten, the only choice from here is to set south again but spending a few days in Kirkenes offers you the opportunity to take part in some of the adventurous Arctic activities available nearby.

Ports visited today : Mehamn, Kjøllefjord, Honningsvåg, Havøysund, Hammerfest, Øksfjord, Skjervøy, Tromsø.
Breakfast at the North Cape forms part of an early morning excursion (at extra cost). Your next stop, Hammerfest, was a settlement back to the Stone Age and is still playing an important role as a fishing port. Founded in 1789 to develop trade with Russia, Hammerfest reconfirmed its position as Norway's Polar capital of its time, acting as a base for hunting expeditions to the High Arctic. In Hammerfest the Meridian Column, erected in 1854, commemorates the first precise measurement of the globe, an achievement so important that it's become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As we sail, keep your eyes open for the Northern Lights, but you might also spot pods of Orcas and Humpback Whales migrating to these waters to feed on herring.
As early as 1891, wave energy provided power to the first electric street lighting in Northern Europe, and energy innovation is still a signature for Hammerfest with its large Liquid Gas Plant just outside town. From here, your next major stop will be Tromsø where you are invited to take part in a very special musical experience, The Arctic Cathedral Midnight Concert. Or why not head to one of the town's many friendly pubs and sample the local brew, Mack's Arctic Beer.

Day 9 - Vesterålen and Lofoten Islands :
Ports visited today : Tromsø, Finnsnes, Harstad, Risøyhamn, Sortland, Stokmarknes, Svolvær, Stamsund.
The Vesterålen and Lofoten Island are amongst today's highlights. Before you reach them, you pass through Risøyrenna, a channel that was specially constructed for Hurtigruten, providing the vessels an 'inside route' between Harstad and Sortland. Stokmarknes, where Hurtigruten was founded, is the location of the Hurtigruten Museum.
You continue through the narrow Raftsund, the picturesque narrow channel between the Vesterålen and Lofoten Islands, where, time and weather permitting, you'll take a detour into the spectacular Trollfjord where steep cliffs hug the ship's sides. Then it's on to Svolvær, the main settlement on the Lofoten Islands followed by Stamsund where the majestic peaks of the huge Lofoten Wall can be viewed. You leave the islands during the evening and set course for the mainland.

Day 10 - Arctic Circle, Seven Sisters :
Ports visited today : Bodø, Ørnes, Nesna, Sandnessjøen, Brønnøysund, Rørvik.
The Helgeland coast with hundreds of islets, fertile farmland and steep granite walls is worth getting up early to experience. Today will also be your last one north of the Arctic Circle as you cross it between Ørnes and Nesna. Marvel at the Seven Sisters mountain range where local legend has it that seven beautiful troll princesses, fleeing from an unwanted suitor, got caught out as the sun rose, turning them into the seven beautiful mountains you see today, and the myth about how the arrow from Hestmannen's bow formed the hole in Torghatten Mountain. The Vega Archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is close to your call in Sandnessjøen.
The islands were inscribed on this prestigious list due to the unique interaction between man and nature - over centuries the local population have protected the eider duck nests in return for the highly valuable down from the birds.
Available excursion :
10B UNESCO Islands Vega
10C Visit the Salmon
Day 11 - Trondheim and Kristiansund :
Ports visited today : Trondheim, Kristiansund, Molde, Ålesund.
Today gives you another opportunity to explore the city of Trondheim. Nidaros Cathedral, in which three Queens and seven Kings have been crowned, is Scandinavia's largest medieval building, and Norway's crown jewels are kept in the adjacent Archbishop's Residence. Some insider advice: treat yourself to a barista-brewed coffee and Nordic patisserie in one of the many cafés in the Bakklandet district before walking up to Kristiansten Fort for great views over the city.
Passing the islands of Munkholmen and Hitra you then cross the open sea to Molde, known as the 'city of roses' due to its lush Gulf Stream location.
You will notice the steep, grey, pointed peaks of the Romsdal Alps glinting in the sun. The town of Kristiansund, located on the scenic Atlantic Road, holds the rather obscure title of Norway's 'cured cod capital' because of the nature of its main export.

Day 12 - Rocky Islands, Disembarkation :
Ports visited today : Ålesund, Torvik, Måløy, Florø, Bergen.
Today, your Hurtigruten voyage will come to an end when you arrive in the City of Seven Mountains, Bergen. But before that, you still have a few nautical miles of fascinating scenery ahead of you such as the picturesque Nordfjord below the enormous Jostedalsbreen glacier, Norway's longest fjord - the mighty Sognefjord and the picturesque Bergen Archipelago. Take home your memories of the world's most beautiful voyage and the many seafaring companions and friends you've made along the way.

The Northern Lights
Magic and science. Hypnotic and exhilarating. A photographer’s dream. The Northern Lights in Norway are all these and more. Explore the many wonders of nature’s greatest lightshow.
The best time to see the Northern Lights? Now!
The Solar Maximum occurs halfway through the sun’s cycle. It’s a time of intense solar activity – and dramatically more auroral displays.
Scientists predict the Solar Maximum in 2024-25 will result in the most frequent and impressive Northern Lights in more than a decade. The next Solar Maximum after 2024-25 won’t be for another 11 years until 2036.
The best way to see the Northern Lights
A Hurtigruten voyage along Norway’s coast is one of the best ways to see a life-defining display of the aurora borealis. Here are five reasons why.
1. Auroral Oval
Our ships sail the Norwegian coast, above the Arctic Circle at 66°N, and directly beneath the Auroral Oval, an area of consistently active displays.
2. Multiple sightings
Travelling to different parts of the Norwegian coast on the ship increases your chances of seeing the aurora not just once but multiple times.
3. Mobile observatory
The advantage of being at sea is that we can quickly sail clear of cloud cover that might be blocking your view of a Northern Lights display.
4. Aurora announcements
Our ship’s bridge officers are always scanning the skies and horizon, and are usually the first to spot the aurora, making an announcement to our guests on board.
5. The best views
Being at sea avoids the air pollution and the ambient light on land, both of which can dull the colours and vibrancy of a Northern Lights spectacle.
- Our Northern Lights Promise
Relax in the knowledge that our unmatchable Northern Lights Promise means you’ll get another chance to see the aurora if they don’t make an appearance on your voyage of 11 days or more.

Voices of the Lights
We talked to people who live and breathe the northern lights about the dreams and desires that drive them. these are their stories., the chief aurora chaser, scientist and sage of the northern lights: dr john mason mbe, a bonding experience: chasing the aurora as a solo traveller, what causes the northern lights.
We asked scientists and astronomers to explain the Northern Lights in a way we could understand. In return, they told us all about solar activity and magnetic fields, and explained the different types of auroras, and why they come in different colours.
They also said that a deeper understanding of the science only adds to the magic of the experience of seeing the Northern Lights.
Legends of the Lights
Long before we understood the science behind the aurora, the Northern Lights were wrapped up in myths and legends that still fuel our imaginations today.
The Lights appear in folklore across the world, as omens both revered and feared. These strange green, red, and purple lights dancing across the night skies have inspired some of the most captivating stories on Earth. Once you’ve seen them, it’s easy to understand why.
How do I photograph the Northern Lights?
When you see the Northern Lights, it’s only natural to want to capture the spectacle. But photographing their elusive beauty isn’t as simple as point-and-shoot.
To help you, we asked photography experts for their tried and trusted tips on everything from how to photograph the Northern Lights from a ship to shooting the aurora with a smartphone.
Ask about the aurora
Everything you’ve ever wanted to ask about the Northern Lights, from how often they appear to whether they affect wildlife.

Leading astronomer joins Hurtigruten Northern Lights sailings
Posted by Phil Davies on 19 August 2022
Renowned astronomer Tom Kerss will join selected Expedition and Coastal Express sailings from October
Knowledge on the Northern Lights, the Arctic sky and the solar system will be shared on Hurtigruten sailings this autumn by a renowned astronomer.
Tom Kerss will join selected Hurtigruten Expedition and Coastal Express sailings from October 2022.
A veteran of the Royal Observatory, speaker and writer, he has set up Stargazing London to deliver training and spark interest astronomy.
Kerss will embark on his first voyage to Norway on board MS Maud from Dover on 20 October 2022.

Besides lectures, he plans to lead excursions, such as an exclusive visit to the planetarium at the Science Centre in Tromso.
Hurtigruten UK and EMEA general manager Anthony Daniels said: “We are delighted that Tom will be joining our upcoming season of astronomy voyages and helping our guests truly immerse themselves in the incredible night skies of Norway. We are always seeking new talent to expand and increase our onboard expertise, and Tom is a fantastic addition to our expedition team."

Kerss added: “Witnessing the Northern Lights is a captivating and often a life-changing experience, and yet it is just one of many to be enjoyed on a voyage along the extraordinary Norwegian coastline. I’m very excited to be able to share my enthusiasm for the uniquely beautiful arctic sky with Hurtigruten’s guests.”

Goodbye sun: What it's like to experience the polar night along Norway's rugged coastline
The polar night is a surreal experience that bathes the landscape in a stunning light.
Anyone who has ventured to the far north or south during winter will have experienced the surreal phenomenon of the "polar night," during which the sun doesn't rise.
Most people who have encountered the polar night will have done so in the Northern Hemisphere in either Norway, parts of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Finland, Russia or Sweden. The only landmass in the Southern Hemisphere to welcome the polar night is Antarctica.
Lucky for me, I got my first true taste of the polar night while on an Astronomy Voyage along the Norwegian Coast with the Hurtigruten Coastal Express . Though I was familiar with the phenomenon and knew what to expect, nothing could have prepared me for the sheer beauty and truly surreal experience of waving goodbye to the sun for over a week.

What is the polar night?
During the polar night, the sun doesn't rise above the horizon. This only happens within the polar circles — the Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle — during the winter months. For the Northern Hemisphere, the polar night can be experienced between September to March and for the Southern Hemisphere, it's March to September according to timeanddate .
The polar night, and the opposite phenomenon known as the "midnight sun" whereby the sun never sets, are caused by the rotation of Earth while it orbits the sun. Earth rotates on a tilted axis of around 23.4 degrees which means there are periods of the year when the polar circles are either completely obscured from the sun (polar night) or constantly exposed to it (midnight sun).
Is the polar night always dark?
It's a common misconception that because the sun never rises during the polar night it is pitch black the entire time.

Though it was completely dark by about 2 p.m. most days during my Hurtigruten Voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes and back, it wasn't always dark.
For a few hours each day, we were graced with a soft blue light that delicately illuminated the stunning landscape. I have never seen the sky turn so many different colors.
As there is no direct sunlight during the polar night, the slither of light that we experienced was due to the refraction of sunlight through Earth's atmosphere .
The result? A beautiful dreamscape with pink, orange, purple and frosty blue skies .
The long nights were perfect for stargazing and of course, hunting the northern lights which made numerous appearances throughout our voyage.
Belt of Venus
During the polar night, the "Belt of Venus," also known as an "anti-twilight arch," put on quite the show. It is visible during twilight , either just before sunrise or after sunset when the sun is below the horizon.
The atmospheric phenomenon is caused when Earth blocks the sun's rays and casts a shadow along nearly 180 degrees of the horizon. Above the shadow — between 10 and 20 degrees above the horizon — is the Belt of Venus.
The rosy hue is caused when sunlight passes through Earth's atmosphere at a low angle, shorter wavelength blue light is scattered while longer wavelength red light remains, a process known as Rayleigh scattering. When the reddened rays combine with scattered blue light along the shadow's edge, a rosy pink hue is created.
Contrary to what the name suggests, the hazy pink arch has nothing to do with Venus . Well, not the planet anyway. It has been suggested that the name may have been inspired by the girdle worn by the Greek goddess Aphrodite, the Roman counterpart of Venus according to the BBC Sky at Night Magazine .
A remarkable but challenging experience
I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the polar night but it was not without its challenges.
In just one week I could already feel my body clock had been thrown completely out of whack; feeling hungry at weird times and craving my bed by 3 p.m.
But lucky for me the allure of clear star-studded skies and abundance of northern lights was enough of a draw to keep me awake throughout the long night. That, and the bracing Arctic wind that slapped you in the face the minute you stepped outside.
