Arai Tour X4 Full-Face Helmet Review and Road Test and Video

Today, we’ll be taking a look at and road testing the Arai Tour X4 adventure helmet, the helmet that does it all.

If you want a helmet for your more adventurous trips, then the Arai Tour X4 , known as the Arai XD-4 in the US, will be right there with you. You can wear this road helmet three different ways with the visor and the combinations include with the peak with or without the visor, with the peak and a pair of goggles, or even without the peak and just with the visor. So, you can already start to get an idea of how this Arai helmet can range from a street touring helmet to one suited to adventure riding as well. This helmet will be coming in at a recommended retail price of about 650 Euros, or around 720 US Dollars. So, you are getting a premium helmet with all the options.  At this price range, the Arai TourX4 will be competing with the Shoei Hornet ADV , AGV AX-9 and the Schuberth E1 .

First, let’s start with the Arai TourX-4 ’s material. The Arai Tour X-4 ’s shell is made of Arai’s Complex Fibre Laminate construction, which is Arai’s own in house shell material that gives the helmet strength and impact flexibility. This also gives you a fairly light weight helmet since when we weighed the Arai Tour Ex-4 , we got a weight of 1620 grams in a size M with all the extras. Though for most helmets, this would be on the heavier end of the spectrum, this helmet was not designed with an explicit focus on weight. The helmet also comes in 5 shell sizes, which is impressive since few helmets come with this many shell sizes. The benefit of more shell sizes is that the helmet’s fit will be better, which will also improve safety since you’re getting a properly proportioned helmet. This will also be a safe helmet since it’s ECE, DOT, and SNELL certified as well. The helmet also has a very round profile, which is what Arai is known for, to focus on the helmet glancing off of any surface during an impact.

Ventilation

Now, looking at the ventilation on this helmet, you’re getting plenty. In the chin, you’re getting a 3 position chin vent with an adjustable set of 12 air intake vents, which should be really good whether you’re out touring or hitting the dirt. You can also close the vent from the inside so you don’t have to breathe in any dust while demisting your visor. In the brow, you’ve got two smaller vents that are also adjustable into open and closed positions to let some air in through the EPS. All this hot air will then come out this neck exhaust vent in the bottom of the helmet and a removable set of exhausts at the top rear of the helmet. So you can also remove them if you need to clean your helmet. Lastly, you’ve also got some side exhausts to help with getting all that warm air out as soon as possible as well.

Onto the visor now and you’re getting a pinlock prepared visor with the anti-fog pinlock insert also in the box. So, this means that even in the worst fogging conditions, your visor should stay as clear as it ever was. This helmet's large visor opening offers plenty of room for a pair of goggles and a good field of view. Looking at the peak, it’s been designed by Arai in such a way as to prevent lifting while you’re riding and instead forcing all that oncoming air into the two brow vents so you get even more cooling. If you want to remove the visor or the peak, it’s pretty straightforward, though you will need a screwdriver. Though from a full-face helmet this does seem a bit high to have to use a screwdriver, given the fact that this helmet is so versatile and a lot of other helmets for motocross are only made for goggles, I’m willing to let it slide.

Now, let’s take a look at the Arai TourX Four ’s liner. To start with, it’s Arai’s Dry-Cool Liner so it’s removable, washable, and moisture wicking. However, you can really see that Arai really went in on the comfort here to try and justify that high price mark. First, this helmet features Arai’s Facial Contour System (FCS) for short, which means the cheek pads have foam spring supports to more effectively have a snug fit without giving too much pressure. To further enhance the helmet’s comfort, it includes 5mm “Peel Away” foam layers on the cheek pads and the temple, so if you need a bit more space in the helmet, you can have it. The helmet should have a more intermediate-oval head fit. Lastly, for safety, the Arai Tour X-IV has an Emergency Release System (ERS) in the cheek pads. To take out the liner is fairly easy and straightforward, first all you need to do is slide out the cheek pads they snap out and slide out from the chin strap. You can see the double d ring chin strap. They’re thick and look comfortable for a good fit. For the res t of the liner, there are 4 snaps on the comfort liner to undo to get them out. What’s nice about the liner is it has multiple levels to help with comfort and ventilation. The only unfortunate thing is we have to EPS grooves in this helmet, but we’ll see how well it ventilates out on the road.

With all the specs over with, let’s see how this helmet did out on the road.

Arai Tour X4 Road Test

Just a reminder for how we measure our road tests. For the temperature, we used a thermometer placed in the top of the helmet to measure helmet’s internal temperature in degrees C. For noise, we used a decibel meter taking measurements from a microphone placed near our rider’s ear. We also used an anemometer to measure the day’s wind speed.

We tested the Tour X4 on a cool day with the sun out so we could also gauge the effectiveness of the Arai’s peak. During our road test, our rider rode on long stretches of highway at about 130 km/h. The day’s wind speed ranged between 110 km/h and 130 km/h. For ventilation, the Tour X-4’s many vents did not let this helmet down since the helmet’s internal temperature was about 8 degrees while it was 7 degrees Celsius outside, so that’s a very good 1-degree difference. For noise, this helmet was also very fairly quiet with about an average of 102 decibels of noise.

Our rider found the helmet to be very comfortable and performed similarly to the Shoei Hornet ADV . Since we rode on a sunny day, he also found that the peak blocked out the sun effectively and didn’t lift too much when looking ahead. He ultimately commented that the Tour X4 was slightly quieter than the Shoei HornetADV , but it was also slightly less comfortable though both still did well in this category with its intermediate oval head fit, double D-ring chin strap, and emergency release cheek pads. Now, let’s see how the Tour X4 ranked.

Arai Tour X4 Champion Helmets Score

For material, since the shell comes in 5 shell sizes and the material is Arai’s super laminate construction, that’s a strong 4 stars. For weight, since this is an adventure helmet it came out about a heavier 1600 grams, giving this helmet 3 stars for weight. For ventilation, this helmet did well, with about a 1 degree difference to the outside temperature, so that’s another 4 stars and a big improvement over the Shoei Hornet ADV. For noise as well, this helmet did well with an average of about 102 decibels giving the Tour X4 3 stars for noise. This helmet was also comfortable, giving the Tour X4 4 stars for comfort. This will bring the Tour X 4 to a total of 3.5 stars with each star costing 30 Euros/star. So, this is ½ a star better than the Shoei Hornet ADV though the Tour X4 is about 4 Euros/star more so it’s a bit more in terms of value for money than the Shoei and the main gripe would be about the visor and peak removal systems.

If you’d like to purchase the Arai Tour X4 , then make sure to check out our website at ChampionHelmets.com where we have a lowest price guarantee and bundle deals with Bluetooth communication systems.

So, that’s all for the Arai Tour X4, it’s a solid premium adventure helmet that will give you all the options you’d like with the performance and safety to match. It was comfortable, the peak was effective, and the ventilation was strong, leaving the biggest failing of the helmet with the visor and peak removal systems requiring a screwdriver. Nonetheless, it does perform better for ventilation than the Shoei Hornet ADV. So, if you grab you Gore-Tex jacket and this helmet, you should be ready for pretty much anything the weather can throw at you. Arai Tour X4 helmet review

Customer rating:

Arai’s Tour X4 is the latest version of the incredibly popular adventure helmet, with a redesigned shell shape and added ventilation over the previous Tour X3.

The most immediately obvious changes on the Arai Tour X4 are a whole array of front and rear vents, which provide enough air flow to keep you ice cold when required.

The chin vent is fantastic even when used on its own but there are also metal mesh panels to each side, which are opened from the inside to allow more air to flow into the front of the helmet.

Arai have also added the brow vents that can be seen on most of their range of helmets. On the Tour X4 these work amazingly well, allowing the air to be channelled directly around your head.

There are also top vents to make sure every part of your head is getting blasted with air, and exhaust vents to draw out any warm air rather than letting it get stuck inside.

CW1_1542

There is a downside to all of the vents and extra bits stuck on to the shell – the noise. In my experience Arais are noisy and the Tour X4 is no different.

I dislike wearing earplugs and prefer to ride without them, but I’ve had no choice when wearing the Tour X4 because of the noise levels.

The peak creates a lot of the wind noise, which seems to get in and around the peak and causes it to whistle like a camping kettle.

I also found that even with the chin curtain pulled out there was still a lot of wind noise coming through the bottom of the helmet. This was nice in the summer but left me reaching for a neck scarf during the winter months.

The peak can be removed, which does reduce the noise considerably and makes the helmet look incredibly aggressive. Combine that with a dark visor and you’ll look like you’ve escaped from Call of Duty.

The difficulty in removing the peak has to be one of my biggest annoyances and one of the reasons I feel this Arai looks a little antiquated. Arai don’t do quick-release and you need a screwdriver to remove the four plastic bolts holding the peak on.

You need to remove the peak to change the visor, slowing it down even more. I also detest the idea of taking a metal screwdriver to an expensive helmet and I’m not sure everyone has access to a plastic screwdriver.

On the plus side, the wide and deep visor and aperture offer amazing optical clarity and field of vision, which means I can perform a blindspot check with the smallest of head movements. Compared to the Tour X4 the view from a standard road helmet is like looking through a letterbox.

But perhaps the biggest advantage of the large aperture is that it has room to fit goggles. You don’t even have to remove the visor as raising it leaves enough room for the goggles, which is great.

Fitting a dark lens to my goggles and leaving the clear visor on the helmet meant I didn’t need to go through the slow visor change so frequently. As soon as the sun went away I took the goggles off and flicked the clear visor down.

The goggles sit really well and seal perfectly to my face. Although it creates loads of extra wind noise, my eyes are protected.

The visor comes with a Pinlock insert, but the shape of the visor means fitting the insert can be tricky.

It’s a challenge to get it to sit tight to the visor without being too tight, which causes a strange streak to appear, or having it too loose and being useless at stopping visor misting.

Once fitted and adjusted correctly I had no problems at all and it did exactly what you’d expect and kept my visor fog-free.

I found the biggest drawback to the helmet was weight. I’ve used the Tour X4 as a dual-sport helmet and after a few hours on the road or some green laning, its weight does become noticeable.

Having said that, it feels lighter on your head than when carrying it around and it’s nicely balanced so it doesn’t pull your head down while riding.

The weight is because Arai’s philosophy is to make a very robust shell and their argument would be that a lighter shell would be thinner and not as strong or safe – though other brands seem able to make a lighter adventure helmet.

An important feature of the helmet to me, is emergency-release cheekpads. Having had a previous helmet removed by paramedics, I feel this is an overlooked and underrated feature on a helmet.

The orange tabs allow the cheekpads to be removed whilst the helmet is still on. Once the cheekpads are out the helmet just rolls off the rider’s head without putting strain on the neck.

The cheekpads don’t have a pocket or removable foam to fit intercoms speakers, but underneath the cover of the cheekpad there is a recess that’s the perfect shape to accommodate speakers.

The skullpad has a 5mm section that can be removed if the helmet fits too closely – but once it has been torn out it doesn’t go back in, so give it time before ripping this out as you may find the helmet beds in quite nicely without removing it.

The fit on mine loosened to the point where I needed new, thicker padding to restore a close fit, so it’s definitely worth waiting before taking out that section of skullpad.

Overall, the Arai Tour X4 is a seriously good helmet that takes the best bits from its predecessor and builds on it.

It’s not perfect but it’s very well made and it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. If you are looking for an adventure helmet you have to consider the Tour X4.

The visor is huge and the field of vision fantastic. Sometimes you can see the edge of the Pinlock insert and at night, the Pinlock causes distortion to appear around the headlights of oncoming cars.

Ventilation

This is one of the best-ventilated helmets I’ve used. There are many little vents and they’re in awkward places, but they are easy to operate once you know where they are.

Fit & Comfort

I’ve gone for my usual size and it fits me bang-on. The helmet is comfortable, but the weight and noise impede a little.

Build quality

The shell of the helmet and interior are some of the best available. The peak is also very robust, however the vents are glued on and feel a little flimsy.

The features that Arai have added to this helmet are amazingly well made. There are a few things missing that you would expect at this price point.

Arai Tour-X4 Vision Red

arai tour x4 stickers

Our mission has always been the protection and comfort of riders. Every Arai helmet is 100 percent handmade. We don’t build Arai helmets to meet any safety standards; we build them to exceed the standards. The foundation principles of protection formulated over three generations have never been forgotten in six decades of helmet design and manufacturing.

Arai is a small, family company, driven by the same family, with the same mission, through three generations – three generations of riders. We see riders wearing our helmets, and we hope they know we made their helmets to the best of our ability, to protect and make them feel comfortable no matter how far or how long they ride. We build your helmet by hand. We each have a specific job, yet all of us know every step that goes into building it. That is how we learn there are no minor parts to an Arai helmet, and there are no minor jobs here. We build each Arai helmet as if we’re creating it for one of our own, a brother, a father, a husband, a sister. That is what makes every one of us Arai.

At Arai, safety standards like Snell or DOT are our baseline, not our goal. Standards create minimum criteria, but, while many helmet makers design their helmets to meet those minimums, “good enough” has never been good enough around here. Our standards are made for the real world, the world of distracted drivers, unpredictable situations, sharp angles – things that don’t move when you hit them. A world you can’t duplicate in a controlled, predictable testing laboratory environment.

Description

The Tour-X 4 must be one of the most versatile helmets ever: adventure, grand touring or off road, and without the peak looks pretty good on a naked bike too! No matter the riding conditions, the Tour-X 4 is ready for it. Can be used without visor with goggles, without peak but with visor, any way that suits you.

Ventilation

arai tour x4 stickers

Easy to clean diffusers create a strong venture vacuum at the rear. Dual intake for increased airflow and lower noise level. Under-peak air intake collects and directs cool air into the helmet. Closeable chin vent controls the airflow to the chin area. Inner chin vent shutter prevents debris coming into the helmet in dusty riding conditions. Brow ventilation, lower side vents and neck roll exhaust. Outer shell.

Outer Shell Construction SFL

Front Ventilation: Dual intake

arai tour x4 stickers

Designed for increased airflow and lower noise level, guiding fresh, cool air into the interior.

arai tour x4 stickers

Fresh air can enter directly to the forehead area without the need for holes in this critical area of the shell and impact absorbing liner. For specific models the ventilation is extended to the temple area.

Front Ventilation: Three position chin vent

arai tour x4 stickers

Three-position chin vent helps in demisting the visor and offering fresh, cool air to the rider.

Front ventilation: Inner chin (bar) vent shutter

arai tour x4 stickers

Open and close the chin bar vents from the inside to prevent debris coming into the helmet in dusty riding conditions.

Rear Ventilation: Neck exhaust vent

arai tour x4 stickers

Rear Ventilation: Removable diffuser

arai tour x4 stickers

Creates a tremendous amount of venturi vacuum at the rear. Can be easily removed (for cleaning) or replacement.

Rear Ventilation: Side exhausts

arai tour x4 stickers

Produce low pressure behind the rear vent for better hot air extraction. Integrated in the shell for better aerodynamics, reduce wind noise and prevent buffeting at speed. Inside, a small foam dam helps to absorb and diminish excessive noise, without reducing ventilation performance.

Aerodynamics: Pull Down Chin Spoiler

arai tour x4 stickers

Helps minimize wind noise and also aids with the extraction of hot air from the face area. Provides additional deflection of road debris away from neck. Depending on the model the Chin Spoiler is retractable.

Visor: Pinlock insert lens

arai tour x4 stickers

Effectively prevents misting and fogging of the visor, even under extreme wet and damp conditions. May be cleaned and changed easily.

Interior: Dry-Cool® Liner

arai tour x4 stickers

Arai´s Dry-Cool® material transfers heat and moisture away from the rider quickly and efficiently.

Interior: Replaceable and Washable Interior

arai tour x4 stickers

Depending on the model, cheek pads, ear cups or the complete interior may be easily removed. All parts (replaceable or not) can be cleaned with lukewarm water and mild soap. Rinse well after cleaning and never dry in direct sunlight or near a heat source. Interior parts in different size thickness are available for a custom fit for every rider.

The premium quality interior of any Arai helmet can be easily cleaned, in place, with mild soap and lukewarm water.

Interior: Facial Contour System (FCS)

arai tour x4 stickers

To offer an even better snug fit and enhancing the comfort to the lower jaw, the Facial Contour System (FCS) works with a foam spring support in the cheek pad that compresses and rebounds, providing the necessary support without excessive pressure.

Interior: 5mm ’’Peel Away’’ Ear cups/Cheek pads

arai tour x4 stickers

Giving even more ability to craft the perfect fit and comfort, the cheek pads now feature a 5 mm peel away layer for added room if needed.

Interior: 5mm ’’Peel Away’’ Temple pad

arai tour x4 stickers

Arai´s peel-away temple crown pads give the option of 5 mm more interior width* if needed.

Comfort: Emergency Release System (ERS)

arai tour x4 stickers

Allows easier access to an injured rider. By pulling the orange tabs integrated in the pads, the cheek pads slide out. Making helmet removal easier for trained medical personnel and rescuers. Minimizing the risk of additional injury.

Approval: ECE 22-05

arai tour x4 stickers

The most common helmet certification internationally, required by over 50 countries worldwide.

General: Innovative peak

arai tour x4 stickers

The Arai peak scavenges and forces air into the forehead vent ports for cooling while at the same time using multiple relief-ports to reduce “lifting” at higher speeds.

General: Five times inspected

arai tour x4 stickers

Each Arai helmet goes through five separate quality-control departments: after the shell is made, after painting and graphic completion, after assembly and two in-process inspections.

General: Handmade

arai tour x4 stickers

It can take up to five years for our experts to earn the right to create an Arai shell. Each shell can take up to 27 steps and to build one Arai helmet will take about 18 man-hours.

General: All-day comfort

arai tour x4 stickers

All-day comfort with the Arai interior fit and shape together with the finest liner materials and the extensive ventilation system. And thanks to the perfect balance and weight distribution of the helmet, you hardly notice you are wearing an Arai.

General: Penetration tested

arai tour x4 stickers

All Arai helmets are penetration tested, although not required by European helmet standards. The Arai penetration test is performed with a 3kg test cone that strikes from a height of 3m on the helmet.

General: Double-D ring device

arai tour x4 stickers

The flat and D-shaped rings fit smooth against the chin. No moving parts, no corrosion problems and just pulling the tab is enough to loosen the fastener.

General: Smooth shape, better protection

arai tour x4 stickers

The smooth outer shell of Arai helmets is designed to glide without unnecessary resistance. You don’t want to decelerate your helmet more than necessary. That’s why all Arai vents and ducts are designed to break off during an impact.

General: Strong outer shell, soft inner shell

arai tour x4 stickers

Arai uses a very hard outer shell to spread impact forces and a soft inner shell to absorb remaining energy. The multiple-density EPS inner shell is made using a unique technology of combining three to five densities in various areas as a single component.

General: Organic shape

arai tour x4 stickers

The organic shape of an Arai outer shell offers a more natural appearance, seals better and conforms more to the head’s natural shape for improved comfort, fit and to help minimize wind turbulence.

General: 5-year limited warranty

arai tour x4 stickers

All Arai helmets are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship, and are serviceable only for the properly fitted first user for 5 years from date of first use, but no more than 7 years from date of manufacture.

General: Different outer shells

arai tour x4 stickers

Unlike many other manufacturers Arai provides one size outer shell for each two-helmet sizes for most models. Together with different shaped outer shells for different models it is almost impossible not to find the fit you are looking for.

Moscow PD Buries Evidence in Sticker Case for More than a Year

MOSCOW, ID—“There is no credible explanation for MPD’s failure to disclose this evidence as part of the January 22 subpoena response,” defense lawyer Sam Creason said about video evidence that was released last week at a hearing. The Moscow Police Department video is key evidence in the infamous Soviet Moscow Sticker case , involving Nathan Wilson and his two sons, Rory and Seamus.

This video evidence was released by MPD last week during a hearing which involved testimony from MPD officers under oath. This hearing was to determine the legality of the initial interrogation of the Wilson boys by MPD back in October of 2020.

Before the hearing and before going under oath, an MPD officer notified prosecutors that video evidence did in fact exist on the night of the sticker incident.

Sergeant Gunderson, who was one of the first two MPD officers on the scene on the night in question, notified prosecutors that Officer Waters—who had been the responsible officer on the scene—captured video of the incident with his squad car’s dash cam.

Gunderson said that footage was in MPD’s system, and that it had been in MPD’s possession from the very beginning of the case.

This footage had been illegally held back from the defense by MPD in the normal course of discovery. Despite public record requests, it had still been held back by MPD. Even when a subpoena was issued in January, it was still held back illegally by MPD.

More than a year has now passed since Moscow city prosecutors (and Latah County) made history by filing the city’s first ever criminal charges against someone for posting a sign or a flier on a pole without permission . Thousands of signs and fliers and stickers have been posted on poles in the city before and since this incident.

The incident happened in October of 2020, when the memorable, red stickers that provoked prosecution read, “Soviet Moscow: Enforced Because We Care”.

arai tour x4 stickers

In response, city attorney, Liz Warner filed thirteen misdemeanor charges against Nathan Wilson and his son Rory Wilson, and Latah County prosecutors followed the city’s lead in filing against the juvenile defendant, now identified as Seamus Wilson. MPD Officers stopped the Wilson boys under suspicion of placing the non-damaging stickers on poles in downtown Moscow.

In the politically charged case that has come to be known by some locals as Sticker Gate, one significant issue has been between defense and prosecution over whether prosecutors were illegally refusing or simply unable to provide defense with any video or audio evidence of the evening when officers stopped the Wilson boys.

The debate about the video has now been settled by the MPD admitting that the evidence exists.

Video and audio evidence surrounding the night is crucial because Rory Wilson was cuffed and interrogated without receiving a Miranda warning, and Seamus was separated from his adult brother and interrogated—before and after he identified himself as a juvenile—without receiving a Miranda warning and without a lawyer or guardian present.

What exactly was asked and said, the length of time the boys were interrogated, and Rory’s behavior before being cuffed and put on the ground, are all key questions. Nathan Wilson was at home asleep at the time.

After an anonymous video making fun of MPD for burying evidence in this case appeared on Facebook, defense received a different MPD video of the citations being issued days after the fact. But video of the initial incident was not released.

MPD officers have now acknowledged under oath, that the second video had been tagged and stored in the same case file immediately next to the video file they had been withholding, and that they continued to withhold until just last week.

In the interim, MPD repeatedly represented to the defense, to the court, and to the public that no video of any kind existed.

“This was already textbook malicious and selective prosecution,” Nathan Wilson said. “I’m glad people can post hundreds of fliers on poles searching for a lost dog. But the city clearly reveals its prejudice in ignoring those but prosecuting us. And while I haven’t been to law school, even I know that burying evidence and defying a subpoena is a much bigger deal than posting stickers.”

stickers on a pole in Moscow

Keith Scholl, the Latah County prosecutor handling the juvenile case, was not at all happy with the recent developments. Over the course of the last year, Scholl and city prosecutor, Liz Warner, have repeatedly and falsely maintained to the court that video evidence had not been provided because it simply did not exist. Judge Megan Marshall correctly identified this claim as suspicious when she first heard it many months ago.

“Sanctions may be in order,” Scholl admitted to Judge Marshall at the hearing last week. “But this kind of thing does happen.” He also said that the existence of the video was a complete surprise to him. Liz Warner did not comment in any way.

Defense was finally able to view the full 40 minute video the day before the hearing on the illegality of the interrogations.

One very significant problem with the video: no audio was included.

MPD now insists that no audio exists.

“We’ve never heard that before,” Nathan Wilson said. “No pun intended.”

After finally viewing the long-suppressed video, defense counsel, Sam Creason of Lewiston, immediately reached out to both prosecutors under the assumption that they would be voluntarily dismissing the year-old cases that have already been reduced to single misdemeanor counts.

“It is extremely disappointing to see that the officers involved not only knew of the evidence, but viewed it and maintained it,” Creason wrote.  He had repeatedly raised questions about the “absence” of video or audio evidence throughout the past year.

“A review of the video demonstrates why MPD did not want this evidence disclosed,” Creason said. “And I am hoping that we reach the day when the audio is produced. The officers’ conduct that night was improper, and they have put [the prosecutor’s] office in this position.”

Surprisingly, prosecutors are still determined to push forward, although Keith Scholl did file a motion to delay last week’s hearing. Creason, however, wanted no further delay, preferring to get officers under oath immediately, and so the hearing proceeded.

In testimony, all three officers—Nunes, Waters, and Gunderson—who were directly involved in the sticker interrogations testified to possessing recording devices at the time of the arrests. Two more officers passed through or near the scene, one of whom was also wearing a mic. The squad car that captured the video was also equipped to capture audio.

No audio of that night has yet been produced by MPD.

Sworn testimony and the MPD case file audit log also revealed that Nunes, Waters, and Gunderson at least had accessed and reviewed the footage of the incident in the last year, while the department was still denying its existence.

“Keith Scholl was obviously genuinely distressed that MPD sat on this evidence,” Nathan Wilson said. “I really do appreciate that. Although I have no idea what he thinks the county gains from his continued participation in the city’s little holy war. And I also appreciate Sergeant Gunderson’s honesty prior to going under oath, although I wish someone in the department had blown the whistle ten months ago.”

What happens next remains to be seen. MPD has offered no explanation or comment of any kind. Nor have prosecutors.

Judge Marshall could issue sanctions. If further testimony reveals that city attorneys were aware that evidence was being suppressed, the consequences could be far more significant.

For now, city attorney Liz Warner clearly believes that it is still in the City of Moscow’s best interests to continue prosecuting the Wilsons for protest stickers that rubbed the city wrong more than a year ago, even though her prosecution has brought those stickers more attention than they ever would have received otherwise. And Bill Thompson’s Latah County office is still content to follow Warner’s lead.

“If my boys had just gotten tickets a year ago, I probably would have written one appeal and then just paid the fine, even though I know my sons didn’t do anything illegal, and the cops did,” Nathan Wilson said. “But starting at thirteen misdemeanor counts? And then burying evidence and coming after us for more than a year? For some reason, the city has started to march into career-ending territory now, and I have no idea why or what they possibly stand to gain. Meanwhile, our damages and civil claims are really starting to pile up. We’d be exhausted if it weren’t for the support we’ve received from around the country. But with that support, we’re more than happy to hire a stable of lawyers to go the distance on this thing if we need to. If someone sane at the city doesn’t end this soon, it is going to get really, really embarrassing and even more expensive.”

Last week, the court heard testimony from officers under oath for the first time, as well as arguments from defense and prosecution on whether the interrogations of the Wilson boys were, in fact, illegal.

Judge Marshall is expected to rule on that matter on November 5 th .

Jeff, thanks for the feedback! We’ll talk to our designer about it.

MPD has always been this way! They pick and choose who to prosecute. They hide audio and video footage all of the time. Even turn their mics off. Funny, they care more about stickers but when a man pulls a gun on a child. Ass backwards 🙄

David Pecker returns to witness stand in Trump's hush money trial

Legal battle continues over 'soviet moscow' stickers.

Jul. 17—A legal battle continues more than nine months after three members of a Moscow family were charged for allegedly purchasing and posting about 89 "Soviet Moscow" stickers on city of Moscow and private properties downtown.

Rory Wilson, 19, and his juvenile brother were each charged Oct. 10 with a misdemeanor count of "No Posting on Fences or Buildings or Poles" under Moscow City Code, and their father, Nathan Wilson, 42, was charged with misdemeanor "Principal to No Posting on Fences or Buildings or Poles" under the same city code, as well as Idaho code.

Rory and Nathan Wilson pleaded not guilty on Oct. 22 to their alleged offenses.

After subpoenas, motions, orders and several other actions over the subsequent months, Latah County Magistrate Judge Megan Marshall on June 18 denied Rory and Nathan Wilson's motions to dismiss the charges. Marshall decided the city code language prohibits the defendants' conduct and neither the code nor the prosecution violate the defendants' constitutional rights — both points the defense argued in its motions to dismiss.

The defense, represented by Lewiston attorney Samuel Creason, filed on July 2 a motion to appeal Marshall's decision to Latah County Second District Court. A motion hearing for Nathan and Rory Wilson is scheduled for Aug. 6 in front of District Court Judge John Judge.

According to Marshall's written decision, which included the facts of the case, Moscow police officers were dispatched to a report of two males placing "Soviet Moscow" stickers in the early morning hours of Oct. 6 in downtown Moscow. Officers made contact with Rory Wilson and his younger brother, who both informed officers they placed stickers, including on signs and poles, as a form of legal protest.

The court documents said Rory Wilson carried a pail containing red vinyl stickers displaying a hammer and sickle symbol akin to the USSR with the words "Soviet Moscow" or "Soviet Moscow: Enforced Because We Care." The youngest Wilson had several of the same stickers in his pockets. He said his father, Nathan Wilson, purchased the stickers, the documents said.

The stickers were developed in protest of Moscow's face covering/social distancing order, which the Moscow City Council terminated in May.

The stickers appeared to mock the city's "Mask Moscow: Enforced Because We Care" signs that were placed on the edges of town.

Officers searched the area and found about 89 of the "Soviet Moscow" stickers on city property and private property, including on parking signs, traffic and street lights, benches, newspaper kiosks, crosswalk lights, light poles, historical district signs, bike racks, trees, trash cans, concrete parking barriers, a U.S. mailbox and a utility box, the documents said.

Nathan Wilson informed officers he was aware his sons were going to put up the stickers but encouraged them not to place them on private property. The documents said the officers allowed the three to leave the scene together and did not issue a citation or arrest them. They were, however, cited four days later.

Four chalk drawings that mirrored the "Soviet Moscow: Enforced Because We Care" stickers were drawn in March downtown. Moscow Police Capt. Will Krasselt, who recently retired, said at the time that one of the drawings was on the sidewalk outside City Hall, two were at Friendship Square and one was on the corner of Third and Main streets.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

arai tour x4 stickers

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

arai tour x4 stickers

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

arai tour x4 stickers

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

arai tour x4 stickers

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

arai tour x4 stickers

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

arai tour x4 stickers

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

arai tour x4 stickers

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

arai tour x4 stickers

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

arai tour x4 stickers

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

arai tour x4 stickers

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
