It is the old capital of the island of Alonissos , located on a hill in the southwest of the territory. After a great earthquake, this town was destroyed, so it ceased to be the main site of the island.

However, the restoration of its buildings has brought Chora back to life, making it an interesting destination for tourists. All its historic houses and buildings are reminiscent of the characteristic architecture of Greece, with limestone walls, orange roofs, and blue shutters.

But that is not all! Here you can enjoy a delicious drink with friends, especially the famous Greek beer, outdoors in one of its many taverns.

Beaches of Alonissos

Different tourists flock to the coasts of the northern islands due to their secluded beaches, not so crowded, quiet, and surrounded by nature. Here, we mention the most important ones so that you do not miss them if you decide to visit Alonissos .

Agios Dimitrios Beach in Alonissos

It is a beach located to the west of the island of Alonissos, 20 kilometers from the port of Patitiri . Its crystal clear waters are ideal for visiting with the family and snorkeling, as they are calm and shallow at all times of the year. In turn, Agios Dimitrios has tent and umbrella facilities that you can rent, as well as a nearby bar to buy food and drinks.

Chrisi Milia Beach

Also known as Skopelos Milia Beach , it is the most popular beach on the island of Alonissos, due to its proximity to different taverns that attract the most intrepid tourists. In this case, the beach tide usually has moderate waves, although it is shallow water. Just like Agios Dimitrios beach, you can find it at the western end of the island.

Kokkinokastro Beach

This beach is located in the south of Alonissos. It has coarse sand and high cliffs that surround it, unlike the two previous beaches. You can rent umbrellas and sun loungers to spend the day here. Also, you can go from Kokkinakastro to Kokinonisi , an islet also known as the red island.

Leftos Gialos Beach

It is an extremely attractive bay for visitors, due to all the vegetation of olive groves, thyme, and lavender that surrounds it, as well as its turquoise waters, ideal for tourist photos. It also has umbrella rental service facilities and in its vicinity, you can find two taverns and even have dinner in the forest.

Tzortzi Gialos Beach

It is a natural pool, ideal to visit with small children. This beach is located at the eastern end of Alonissos and does not have any facilities per se, so we recommend you bring your sand blanket or umbrella. If you want to spend a quiet day on a wild beach, this is your place.

There are many ways to enjoy the island, and you can choose whatever works best for you. The following are some of the activities we recommend:

Windsurfing & Watersports

Alonissos is a haven for water sports enthusiasts . As the center of the marine park, and with ample beaches, bays, and clear waters, you could spend all of your time windsurfing, swimming, snorkeling , and for the more adventurous, scuba diving.

Try windsurfing at one of two great windsurfing spots – Laganas Bay or Moudania Beach, which is just south of Agia Marina. This area offers excellent weather year-round and has both light winds in summer and strong winds from October through March.

The local dive shop will provide all the necessary equipment for beginners who want to try scuba diving without breaking their bank accounts; be sure that your insurance covers this type of activity before booking it! If not, don’t worry—you can still enjoy yourself at Laganas Bay by renting snorkel gear from one of its shops or purchasing them online beforehand so there won’t be any surprises when it comes time for check-in. Or bring your own snorkel gear!

Alonissos is great for those who love experiencing nature and architecture on foot . If you want to explore more of the island itself, leave the beaches for the day and hike through the forested areas or take one of the many island paths.

Many paths wind near beaches, so feel free to take a quick dip when the opportunity arises!

Milia is a small village on the southern side of the island. If you love being outside or just chilling at the beach with nothing but silence around, then Milia would definitely be worth checking out! Milia may not be right up your alley if you’re into partying all night long.

It’s one of the best places to visit if you’re looking for some peace, quiet, and solitude. In fact, it’s so calm here that there isn’t even any nightlife! If your family loves nature and beaches, then this is definitely the place for them!

While the blue-domed churches of Santorini and the stylish beach bars of Mykonos get most of the attention from Greece-bound tourists, there are loads of equally beautiful and much less busy islands that deserve some of that spotlight. Alonissos, in the Sporades archipelago, is one of them.

travel to alonissos

As a travel blogger I know that the term ‘hidden gem’ is overused, but that’s genuinely the best way to describe this low key island paradise. I’d never heard of it before the local tourism board reached out to me, and that’s after three years of full-time blogging and six years of working in a travel agency before that! Alonissos really seems to run under the radar from most travellers.

But don’t mistake its lack of coverage to mean it’s not worth a visit. There are beaches that rival Corfu and Crete with far fewer people to share them with, the sunsets from Chora (the old town) are magical, your money goes further than the main tourist islands and it’s especially ideal for hikers and divers.

In this detailed Alonissos travel guide you’ll find suggestions on how to get there, where to stay, how to get around, when to visit and more, plus I’ve listed a bunch of epic things to do in Alonissos to fill your itinerary.

All you need to know about Alonissos

Is alonissos worth visiting.

Absolutely! Alonissos offers the perfect combination of dreamy beaches, epic hikes, fantastic food and an authentic Greek vibe. If you’re keen for a holiday that’s a little bit off the beaten track but still gives you the iconic Greece experience, Alonissos is a brilliant option.

Where is Alonissos?

Alonissos is located in Greece’s Northern Sporades island group, in the heart of the Aegean Sea.

When is the best time to visit Alonissos

To catch Alonissos in all its sun-kissed glory while avoiding the summer crowds (mostly domestic visitors), May/June and September/October are ideal.

July and August do get busy and the limited accommodation on the island books up in advance so if you’re visiting during those months you’ll need to plan ahead of time. The shoulder months are much more relaxed and at times it might seem like you’re the only traveller there, just be sure to check the opening dates of any restaurants/bars you’re desperate to go to as many close from end of October to the start of May.

How to get to Alonissos

Alonissos isn’t the most accessible Greek Island, which is partly why it’s lesser known than the well-connected Cyclades Islands.

To reach Alonissos you can either fly to Skiathos (a nearby island) and catch a 1.5-2 hour ferry, or get to Volos on the mainland by bus or plane and then catch a 3-5 hour ferry or hydrofoil.

If you’re travelling Europe without flying you can easily get to Volos by bus from Athens, Thessaloniki or Larissa . I caught a ferry/bus combo from Corfu to Larissa, then switched to a bus to Volos, then ferried to Alonissos from there.

How to get around Alonissos

Alonissos does have a local bus network but it’s quite limited if you want to go beyond the old town, the port and the main beaches, so renting a car, quad bike or scooter is the best way to explore without restrictions. I used Alonissos Rent a Car and got a little Fiat to use as my chariot!

Make sure you have travel insurance that covers car rental and/or quad bikes/scooters, I use Covermore New Zealand and they offer fantastic cover for a decent price.

Is Alonissos safe for solo female travellers?

As a solo female traveller I felt completely safe during my time in Alonissos. Your biggest danger here would be the elements as it can get super hot, if you’re hiking or heading to the beach for a day just be sure to take enough water to keep hydrated and let your hotel know when you expect to be back so they can raise the alarm if you don’t return.

It’s good to always be conscious of your belongings in public places because petty crime can happen anywhere, but honestly in Alonissos I feel like I could have left my bag on the beach and come back two hours later and it’d still be there. I’m not telling you to do that, but that’s the vibe I got!

travel to alonissos

How many days do you need in Alonissos?

I visited for three days and I felt rushed to try and see all the best beaches, Chora, some hikes and spend a day diving.

If your timing allows it I’d day five days would be a minimum to really slow down and enjoy your time, but a week or two would give you even more freedom to hit some of the island’s trails, properly enjoy the beaches and immerse yourself in the island’s culture.

Where to stay in Alonissos

Budget | There are some cheap and cheerful options if you’re travelling to Alonissos on a budget, like Pension Hara , Machi Rooms , Marianna Studios and Haravgi Hotel .

Mid-range | I stayed at Atrium of Alonissos , a brilliant value 3* hotel overlooking the Aegean with spacious rooms, two swimming pools and friendly staff. It’s one of the best-rated options on the island, it’s not super fancy but it offers authentic Greek hospitality, a comfortable place to rest your head and magnificent views.

If Atrium is all booked up, other mid-range options are Despoina Apartments , Angelos Boutique Suites , Casa Kalypso and Milia Bay Hotel .

Luxury | For a bit of a treat, consider booking a room at Ilya Botanic Suites , Angelos Design Suites , Ikion Eco Boutique Hotel or ALETRI .

Ultra-fancy | If you’re visiting Alonissos for a special occasion or just want to splurge on where you’re staying, consider the Instagrammable Anemolia Villas for a truly lush accommodation experience.

Things to do in Alonissos

Explore the alonissos marine park.

The National Marine Park of Alonissos is a 2200 square kilometre haven for biodiversity and a vital part of European marine conservation. It’s the first and largest protected area in the Aegean and one of the largest in Europe, and in a continent more known for its wonders on land rather than underwater, the Alonissos Marine Park is a must-visit for snorkellers, divers and wildlife lovers.

There are a few different ways to experience the marine park depending on your travel style and preferences.

Europe isn’t really known for its snorkelling opportunities in terms of what to see, but Alonissos really delivers for those keen to witness marine life. With vibrant and plentiful sea life, dolphins, coral reefs and more to see, no Alonissos trip is complete without a snorkel trip.

Alonissos is running a bit behind the whole ‘booking activities online’ thing, but you can book a snorkel trip from local operators when you’re there. Just head down to the main part of Patitiri and there will be tour agencies with signs showing the options.

For those who crave a deeper dive into the underwater world, Alonissos is one of the best scuba diving locations in Europe. The marine park offers a range of dive sites suitable for all levels of scuba diver, from shallow reefs for those just learning to dive through to advanced divers who want to dive shipwrecks and navigate underwater caves.

I spent a day in the water with the superstars at Triton Dive Center and we had a fantastic time, I’d highly recommend them to anyone keen to scuba while you’re there. They offer dive courses, certified dive trips and freediving too if that’s up your alley.

The water is unbelievably clear, our visibility was about 50 metres which is WILD. For reference, I was in the Maldives just a couple of weeks earlier and we had max. visibility at about 20-25 metres, which was already impressive. The sea life isn’t as colourful as places I’ve dived in Asia and the Pacific, but it was better than I expected from Europe (we saw lionfish, bright red coral and beautiful sea fans) and the visibility made it totally worth it.

As an open water diver I’m limited to 18m depth and there is quite a lot more to see in Alonissos between the 20-30m mark, so if you’re tossing up whether to go for a dive trip, it’s probably more worth it once you have your Advanced certification. Or you can get it there!/im

travel to alonissos

If you prefer to stay above water, a boat tour is still a fantastic way to experience the marine park’s magic.

The excursions on offer range from quick trips to full day sailing adventures, visiting remote beaches, secluded coves and uninhabited islands within the park. Most tours will include a local guide who can share insights into the area’s biodiversity and history, and you’ll get some swim stops too if you feel like it.

Again, the best way to book is to head to Patitiri and to see the operator schedules.

Learn about monk seals

The most famous resident of Alonissos is the critically endangered Mediterranean monk seal, and you’ll see seal calendars, soft toys and souvenirs all over the island. The actual seal itself is much harder to spot!

These big-eyed cuties are amongst the rarest marine mammals in the world, with less than 700 estimated in the wild, and Alonissos Marine Park is one of only three or four places they can be found.

Sightings are a very special treat so don’t count on that during your trip, but animal lovers will have the opportunity to learn about the monk seals on any marine park tour or at the Information Centre of MoM in Patitiri.

travel to alonissos

Visit the Blue Cave

Visiting and swimming in the mesmerising Blue Cave is one of the most iconic things to see in Alonissos. It’s only accessible from the water, on the northeast coast further north than Agios Dimitrios, but it’s worth the boat journey to get there.

If you book a boat trip from Patitiri chances are they’ll take you to this spot, but check with the operator before you book to make sure.

Explore Chora

Chora, the charming old town of Alonissos, boasts plenty of genuine Greek character as well as mind-blowing panoramic views.

The town was all but destroyed in 1965 by a devastating earthquake, you can still see a few houses that were damaged and haven’t been rebuilt, and after this the inhabitants left Chora to settle in the new capital of Patitiri. These days Chora has been restored with classic cobblestoned alleyways and whitewashed buildings, housing everything from local art galleries to authentic tavernas to funky cocktail bars.

Here are a few must-visits in Chora:

  • Astrofegia Restaurant for delicious, home-style local cuisine
  • Barbarossa for incredible cocktails and tapas-style food, particularly epic at sunset if you can get a table overlooking the village
  • El Loco for a proper restaurant with sunset views (value for money isn’t great but the outlook makes it worth it)
  • Piano Bar Hayiati for a morning coffee/breakfast stop, then again in the evening for live piano

Visit Alonissos Museum

The Alonissos Museum is a small but comprehensive showcase of sculptures, paintings and artifacts that represent the island’s culture and history, with a particularly impressive collection of authentic pirate treasures and weapons.

There’s also a brilliant exhibit showcasing tools and machinery from Alonissos in past centuries, from olive oil presses to carpenter tools and everything in between.

The museum is open from 11am from May to September and entry costs 4EUR for adults, 2EUR for kids 8+ and it’s free for kids under 8.

Hike one of the tracks on the island

Alonissos offers 40km worth of signposted hiking trails that traverse the island’s diverse landscapes, including thick pine forests, olive groves and rocky coastal paths leading to hidden churches and secluded bays.

The trails vary in difficulty, catering to both casual holiday hikers and experiences trail walkers, and many of them pass by untouched beaches just waiting for you to take a refreshing dip.

Some tracks of note are:

  • Agii Anargyri Loop (moderate, 4.5km)
  • Old Town and Port Loop (easy, 6km)
  • Kastanorema Agios Dimitrios Loop (moderate, 7.1km)
  • Chora to Megalos Mourtias (various routes)
  • Chora to Kalovoulos Summit (moderate, 2.9km)

Eat fresh seafood in Steni Vala

Tucked away on the east coast of Alonissos, Steni Vala is a quaint fishing village serving up ocean-to-plate seafood with harbour views.

It’s much more chill than the bustling port of Patitiri and it offers a slower pace than the vibrant old town, perfect for a quiet lunch or dinner where you can truly savour every bite of the fresh tuna, octopus, squid, lobster or whatever other seafood floats your boat.

There are a bunch of top-rated taverns to choose from. I went to Fanari Fish Tavern and had a divine meal of smoked tuna (a local specialty) and squid, but some other well-rated options are Tassia’s , Sossinola and Diver & Kalymnia .

travel to alonissos

Wander the main street of Patitiri

The island’s capital and where the ferries arrive, Patitiri is the busiest part of the island yet still sooo laidback compared to the more touristed Greek Islands.

Many hotels are located in the hills above Patitiri so it’s a hub for all the tour operators, travel agencies, rental car providers and a bunch of shops, restaurants and bars too.

Paralia Patitiri is the stone beach located on the right side of Patitiri if you’re looking at the ocean, it’s a family-friendly swimming option with beautifully clear water and easy access if you’re in town and just need a cold dip.

My top food recommendations in Patitiri are:

  • Kritamo for a truly incredible local culinary experience, I’m gutted I only went on my last day as I would’ve gone twice if I’d had time! Locally-sourced ingredients used to create innovative dishes, excellent views over the port and friendly service.
  • Restaurant Akrogiali for a beachfront lunch
  • Bacco Island for delicious pizza, pasta and other Italian dishes
  • Favela for great Mexican and cocktails
  • Red Rooster for quick and easy gyros and souvlaki

travel to alonissos

Shop at the Women’s Agrotourism Cooperative (IKOS)

One way to have a positive impact while travelling is to be conscious about where you spend your money, and buying locally-made goods from cooperatives is a great way to do that.

The Women’s Agrotourism Cooperative is a one minute from Patitiri and you can try treats like cheese pie, pastries and jam as well as stock up on some to take home with you.

Visit the magical Alonissos beaches

Alonissos has a variety of beaches to discover, from accessible family-friendly beaches to off-the-beaten track bays and everything in between. Here are the best ones to add to your Alonissos itinerary!

Agios Dimitrios

Probably the most famous beach in Alonissos, Agios Dimitrios is a pebble beach with water so clear and blue it blew my mind. If you drive to the far end you’ll find an organised beach with some amenities like sunbeds, changing pods and umbrellas for rent, but on the northern end of the beach it’s unspoiled and quiet.

travel to alonissos

Leftos Gialos

My personal favourite beach on Alonissos, Leftos Gialos is somewhere you could easily spend an entire day.

There are a couple of tavernas that serve up food and drinks as well as rent out sunbeds, the cheapest sunbeds are from 7EUR and the ones on the beach are 12EUR. If you don’t want to pay there’s a pebbly area at the northern end as well as a stone pathway built over the rocks where you could set up shop.

It’s super dreamy with clear water, protected from any ocean wind and swell, and there’s daily happy hour deals with 3EUR wine, what more could you ask for?

Just be careful swimming around the rocks as there are loads of sea urchins!

travel to alonissos

Chrisi Milia

Chrisi Milia is a narrow sand beach with shallow, clear water and shaded sunbeds for 8EUR for a pair. Because this is one of the few sand beaches on the island it does get busy, so get there early if you want to secure a comfortable place to sit.

This one wasn’t really my jam because there were kids everywhere, it was more of a family playground than a relaxing beach. Ideal for families with little ones, not so great for anyone wanting peace and quiet.

The restaurant above the beach is really decent for a tourist tavern, choose from fresh fish, famous Alonissos cheese pie or classic Greek and Italian dishes, and enjoy incredible ocean views while you eat.

travel to alonissos

Kokkinokastro

Particularly magical from above, Kokkinokastro (meaning ‘red castle’) is known for its unique red cliffs and turquoise water, providing an incredible contrast and making it perfect for photographers and geology enthusiasts.

The beach is a mix of sand and pebbles with some limited amenities, you can snorkel around the bay and it’s especially stunning at sunset, when the golden light hits the already-vibrant red rocks.

There’s historical significance to this area too, remains of prehistoric settlements have been found nearby that suggest Alonissos was one of the first Aegean islands to be inhabited.

travel to alonissos

Suelto Beach Bar

Just north of Steni Vala on the road to Agios Dimitrios, Suelto Beach Bar is an excellent place to spend a relaxing day.

The beach here isn’t the best for swimming but it still looks divine, there are shaded sunbeds for 5EUR and the tavern offers a menu of fresh seafood dishes, other Greek specialties and yummy cocktails.

travel to alonissos

The perfect five-day Alonissos itinerary

Day one: Agios Dimitrios in the morning, Suelto Beach Bar for lunch and afternoon, then Steni Vala for dinner

Day two: Boat tour, snorkel tour or diving trip. dinner in Patitiri

Day three: Leftos Gialos for the day, sunset and dinner in Chora

Day four: Hike in the morning, Patitiri for lunch by the water and some souvenir shopping, chill out in the afternoon

Day five: Alonissos museum, lunch in Chora, final dinner somewhere fancy!

15 Best Things to Do in Alonissos (Greece)

In the namesake National Marine Park, Alonissos is a sustainable island destination in the Northern Sporades.

The marine park includes Alonissos and an archipelago of uninhabited islands off its shore.

Some parts are inaccessible, to help conserve the Mediterranean monk seal, but you’re free to go on a self-guided voyage by motorboat to forgotten coves and sequestered monasteries in the park.

Alonissos itself is a fertile island, infused with scent of wild herbs and growing figs, almonds and pears.

The beaches are in snug coves with crystalline seas, and this exceptional water clarity ranks Alonisssos as one of the Mediterranean’s undiscovered diving paradises.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Alonissos :

1. Chora (Old Village)

Chora, Alonissos

Today the harbour village of Patitiri is the main settlement on Alonissos, but this wasn’t always the case.

Until 1965 the capital was the Chora, laid out on a hill in the southwest.

It was abandoned following an earthquake in 1965, but over the last 30 years its old houses have been returned to their former glory.

These are quaint limestone and whitewashed buildings with terracotta roofs and blue-painted shutters and balconies.

Writers and artists have helped with the village’s revival, and its galleries bring an air of sophistication.

The Chora has a big choice of tavernas, and make sure you get a table outside as the sunsets are stunning here.

2. National Marine Park

Alonissos National Marine Park

Alonissos belongs to the largest protected marine area in Europe, encompassing 2,260 square kilometres and established in 1992. The area had been recognised for its ecological value since the 1970s, and was protected to safeguard the species like the Mediterranean Monk Seal from the encroachment of tourism.

This species has a delicate habitat, living in the limestone caves around Piperi.

Zone B of the park is open for visitors, while Zone A (Piperi) is limited to scientific research.

The port at Patiitiri is the jumping off point for visits and is home to the information centre for MOm (Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal), the NGO conducting scientific research in the park.

Inside is a small but informative exhibition about the park and its inhabitants.

3. Self-Guided Boat Trips

Harbour at Patitiri

Piperi is the only island in the National Marine Park that is off limits.

You’re not allowed to go within three nautical miles of its shores, but the rest of the park is your oyster and is a diverse archipelago of large and small islands.

The best way to experience it all is on a self-navigated motorboat from the harbour at Patitiri.

There’s more than you could possibly see in a week, at Yioura, grazed by wild goats and with a cave associated with Homer’s Cyclops, or Kyra-Panagia, which has one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean Sea and the 12th-century Megistis Lavras Monastery.

Peristera has dozens of deserted coves where you can spend the day alone, and the volcanic Psathoura has the remnants of an ancient city on its seabed and the tallest lighthouse in the Aegean, built in the 1800s.

4. Agios Dimitrios Beach

Agios Dimitrios Beach

This beach, some 20 kilometres up from Patitiri on the west coast is an unusual pebbly nub protruding into the sea.

But even though this little cape is exposed to the wind it lies on a strait next to Peristera Island, so the water is calm if a little deep.

In summer 2017 the price for two sun loungers and a palm sunshade was €6, while the beach also has a small water sports centre where you can hire a paddleboard for an hour or two.

Also remember to bring your snorkelling gear as there’s vibrant marine life just a few steps from the shore at Agios Dimitrios.

5. Leftos Gialos

Leftos Gialos

The northernmost of a series of beaches running down the east coast of Alonissos, Leftos Gialos may be the best of the lot.

What makes this cove so appealing is there’s an old olive grove on the edge of the beach, with flowerbeds and wild thyme and lavender growing among the trees.

At the two tavernas, Eleonas and Dolopes Island, you can dine in the grove.

The tavernas also hire out sun loungers at €6 a day for a pair, some under pergolas on the shelf above the shore, and others below palm sun shades by the water.

Leftos Gialos beach has clear, rippling water with different shades of blue green.

The surface is laid with small pebbles, so swim shoes are recommended.

6. Alonissos Museum

Alonissos Museum

Close to the harbour in Patitiri is what is claimed to be the largest privately owned museum in the Aegean.

Covering the island’s history, art and folklore, the Alonissos Museum is in a four-storey stone building constructed in 2001. A crowd-pleasing exhibition has artefacts recovered from the wrecks of warships and pirate ships (canons, swords and everyday utensils), dating between the 1500s and 1700s.

There’s also a display revealing traditional life on Alonissos, with items like a grindstone from an old olive mill, traditional costume and old razor blades once used by barbers.

The museum is also decorated with art by people living on the island or visiting, and also puts on an annual art market in July.

7. Chrisi Milia Beach

Chrisi Milia Beach

The most frequented beach on Alonissos is the only one with fine sand on the island.

Chrisi Milia sits in a bay bookended by pine-capped cliffs on the west coast.

This beach is more open to the sea, and is washed by moderate waves that most swimmers should be able to handle, as the sea is so shallow.

Two sun loungers and a parasol will cost €5 for a day, and waiters from the beach bar will pass by regularly to take your order.

Raised on the south side of the beach is a set of tavernas, with terraces looking over the bay under pine trees and pergolas.

Diving

Alonissos may only be small, but it’s a sign of the natural splendour in its waters that there are four dive centres to choose from: Seacolours, Blue Dream, Triton, Ikion.

Underwater visibility is as high as 40 metres, and summer water temperatures are almost tropical, rising to 26°C from July to September.

People with PADI certification and drift training can explore the Gorgonian Garden to a depth of 40 metres and dominated by spectacular red gorgonians, larger than almost anywhere in the Mediterranean.

The Blue Cave, teeming with fan mussels and moray eels, is suited to all levels, allowing newcomers to stay shallow and experienced divers to explore a little deeper.

9. Kokkinokastro Beach

Kokkinokastro Beach

Facing south and angled towards the islet of Kokinonisi (Red Island), KokinoKastro is a coarse sand and shingle beach skirted by reddish cliffs.

The surrounding cliffs help to shelter the beach from the wind, creating lagoon-like aquamarine waters.

There’s a beach bar here, renting out a pair of sun loungers and a parasol for €5 a day.

Close by are what’s left of the walls that once belonging to the ancient town of Ikos.

While the islet at the end of the creek has yielded Palaeolithic remains, and some of the earliest evidence of human habitation in the Aegean.

10. Volunteering with MOm

Seal on Alonissos

There is a kind of loophole if you want to see parts of the National Marine Park that would normally be off-limits.

And that is to volunteer as a marine biologist with MOm.

Paying €70 for a single but unforgettable day, you’ll sail into Zona A, learning more about the work of marine conservators and putting yourself to use as a scientist.

One of your duties might be to assist MOm’s research by spotting and making notes on monk seals, as well as Risso’s, bottlenose, striped and common dolphins.

11. Megali Ammos Beach

Beach

Although “Megali Ammos” translates to “Great Sandy Beach”, sand isn’t what you’ll encounter at this beach on the west coast.

Instead there’s an arc of small pebbles partially enclosed by rocks in an idyllic cove.

For hikers it’s a welcome sight and somewhere to dip their feet in the water on a cross-island trek.

One of the best things about the beach is the large rocks deposited on the shoreline, leaving little pools of sun-warmed, crystalline water to sit in.

High, in the distance to the southwest you can make out the Agion Anargiron monastery amid the green hills.

Alonissos Hiking Trail

The handy thing about a compact island like Alonissos is just how much you can see on foot.

Using Patitiri or the Old Village as a starting point there are dozens of walking trails at your disposal.

You can strike out for tiny villages, ravines like Vathi Rema or Kastanorema, or Mount Kalovoulos at 325-metres to watch the sun go down.

Walking this rocky terrain it may surprise you just how diverse the island’s nature is.

The south is a bucolic landscape of pines, wild herbs, olive groves and orchards for figs and pears, while the protected north is all holm oaks, wildflowers and maple trees.

If you take on the seven-hour walk to the fishing Village of Steni Vala on the upper east coast, you can watch the countryside change and enter a magical cedar forest near the end.

13. Tzortzi Gialos Beach

Tzortzi Gialos Beach

In Milia on the east coast, this small pebble beach is protected by an inlet, several hundred metres long and with low evergreen slopes and a few villas perched over the water.

The joy of Tzortzi Gialos isn’t so much the beach itself, which is narrow and uneven, but the water in front.

This is like a natural swimming pool, remaining shallow for dozens of metres and with a sandy seabed.

You’ll have to bring your own parasol, or seek the shade of the pines at the rocks on the south side.

Tzortzi Gialos is believed to have been the port for ancient Ikos.

14. Threshing Festival

Preparation of Tarhana

In the Old Village July is time for the annual Threshing Festival.

Here wheat grain is separated from its stems the old-fashioned way, using mules on the village’s threshing floors.

It’s a way of keeping old customs alive, and as well as seeing how the threshing was done you can take in some traditional music and dance.

The dish prepared during the festivities is tarhana (cracked wheat grain in boiled milk), made in big clay pots with a recipe going back to antiquity.

15. Traditional Cuisine

Mizithra

Mizithra is a milky soft goats’ cheese produced on Alonissos.

Aged for just one day, and with a neutral sweet flavour, it’s a versatile ingredient.

You might have it in meze with tomato and olives, in a salad or in one of the island’s much-loved fried cheese pies.

Those figs growing around Alonissos are delicious when grilled, and another sweet treat to look out for are loukoumades, a kind of donut made from water, flour and yeast and fried in olive oil.

Seafood is fresh and abundant, so a go-to could be kakavia, the famous fish stew, or black linguini with tuna.

Alonissos: A Greek Island Paradise Awaits

Underrated Alonissos, a pine-clad island in the Northern Sporades, may not be as well-known as its neighbors Skiathos and Skopelos, but it offers a unique kind of spectacular. It is a tranquil island surrounded by gorgeous, clear waters, lush greenery, and traditional settlements.

An aerial view captures the breathtaking beauty of Agios Dimitrios beach on Alonissos Island.

I love all Greek islands but I have to admit that I prefer the ones that are much less touristically advanced and remind me of authentic Greece with its slow-paced villages and friendly tavernas that I still remember when I was a child (a long time ago 😀 ).

Alonissos is one of these places in Greece that has a magical atmosphere.

Patitiri the port.

An aerial perspective of Patitiri port on Alonissos Island, surrounded by lush greenery and hillsides.

As I stepped off the ferry, I found myself in Patitiri, the bustling capital and port of Alonissos. Its name, meaning “Grape Press” in Greek, hints at the island’s long history of winemaking. The architecture may be modern (the 1965 earthquake destroyed the town), but Patitiri’s charm lies elsewhere – the beautiful harbor, the surrounding nature, and the welcoming spirit of the locals.

A scenic view of Patitiri port in Alonissos, Greece, showcasing colorful fishing boats moored along the quay against a backdrop of traditional white-washed buildings.

There are several cafés and taverns to choose from while watching the fishing boats and the two neighboring islands called Dio Aderfia (Two Brothers). While drinking a coffee or a chilled glass of wine you can also make new friends: locals or expats who have settled on the island and believe that Alonissos is the real paradise on earth.

In Patitiri, I booked a boat tour to explore both Alonissos and the Marine Park (but I didn’t dive as I prefer to enjoy the sea sitting comfortably on the boat). Don’t miss the chance to visit the MoM , the Center for the Protection of the Mediterranean Monk Seal, and learn more about this fascinating endangered creature.

Palio Chorio, the Medieval Capital

A charming glimpse of the quaint hillside village of Alonissos, with its labyrinthine alleys and traditional architecture.

In stark contrast to the lively Patitiri, Chorio, as the locals call it, is tranquil, with a laid-back charm. It was built high on a picturesque hilltop for protection against pirates and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Imagine strolling through narrow streets lined with stone houses, each with its unique character – from the traditional slate stone from Pelion to colorful doors and windows and picture-perfect courtyards overflowing with flowers.

An enchanting view of the old traditional village perched atop a hill on Alonissos Island, Greece. Narrow cobblestone streets wind through whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant bougainvillea.

Important info about Chora:

  • You have to leave your car outside the village, cars are not allowed.
  • It has many steep steps, not great if you have any mobility issues.
  • It has many beautiful churches to visit.
  • It is only 2.5 km from Patitiri.
  • Althea Traditional Hotel (mid-range, children over 7 are welcome) has (absolutely) stunning views out to sea.

Roussoum Yalos

quaint coastal village nestled along the shoreline of Alonissos Island, surrounded by verdant hills and overlooking the shimmering blue waters of the Aegean Sea.

The small bay is a 10-minute walk (800 m) from Patitiri surrounded by piny cliffs with a wide pebbly beach with crystal clear waters. The beach is organized and there are taverns, supermarkets, and rooms you can rent here. There is also a small harbor where it can be used as an anchorage for small boats.

An idyllic seafront hamlet on Alonissos Island, characterized by its picturesque harbor dotted with fishing vessels and sailboats.

The next bay you will find very close to Roussoum Yalos is beautiful and tranquil Votsi, built amphitheatrically at a small cove and surrounded by abundant greenery. It is a natural cove with very calm waters and a peaceful place to stay. There are rental apartments, some guesthouses, the four-star Yalis Hotel , taverns, and cafes.

Colorful fishing boats docked along the pier and traditional white-washed buildings lining the waterfront in Greece.

Steni Vala is a lovely fishing village built around a tiny bay 11 km northeast of Patitiri. Its bay always has a few fishing boats, small yachts, and some great taverns where you can enjoy freshly caught fish.

Tassia’s Cooking is a famous tavern on the island. All the vegetables are from the garden ripening their deliciousness with a taste of sea saltiness. We ordered penne with local tuna, spaghetti with shrimp, and saganaki (fried cheese) with local orange jam and they were delicious.

travel to alonissos

At Steni Vala, you’ll also find the Care Center of the Society for the Study and Protection of the Mediterranean Monk Seal (MoM), and its research vessel, the “Odyssey,” crewed by biologists who continuously record the marine environment of the broader area. Right across from Steni Vala sits the famous Peristera island with the shipwrecks.

The waterfront promenade is lined with bustling cafes and seafood restaurants, offering panoramic views of the tranquil bay and distant islands on the horizon.

Kalamakia village is located right in the middle of the eastern side of Alonnisos, making it the ultimate destination for locals and visitors who love fresh fish and seafood. On one side are the moored fishing boats, and on the other are the taverns owned by their captains, with tables and chairs on the pier. Korali Tavern is a fantastic place for fresh food while enjoying a magical sunset.

Alonissos Beach Bliss

Alonissos has around 27 awesome beaches to check out. You’ll find everything from hidden gems to lively hotspots along the coastline, giving you plenty of options to soak up the sun and enjoy the crystal-clear waters.

Agios Dimitrios

With its shallow, calm waters and a backdrop of lush greenery, it's an ideal spot for families and sunbathers alike to unwind and soak up the Mediterranean sun.

It is perhaps the most recognizable and one of the most beautiful beaches of Alonnisos, with its characteristic headland penetrating the sea, forming two beautiful bays with pebbles, bushy vegetation, and pine trees. Umbrellas and sunbeds are available for those who desire comfort, but there is also ample space for others. At a short distance, you can see Peristera, the closest islet of the Marine Park to Alonnisos.

A great property to stay near Agios Dimitrios is Amaltheia .

Kokkinokastro

An aerial view captures the breathtaking beauty of a hidden gem beach on Alonissos Island, nestled between rugged cliffs and surrounded by untouched nature

Kokkinokastro is another beautiful and impressive beach of Alonnisos, 5.8 km northeast of Patitiri, near the ruins of a Neolithic settlement. It is surrounded by red-colored cliffs, with pebbles mixed with golden sand, and turquoise water.

Half of the beach is organized with umbrellas and sunbeds for rent and the rest is free to place your towel or to secure the best spot under the natural shade provided by the pine trees! You also have the option to rent a kayak and visit the ancient wall at the cape or the small islet opposite where ruins were found.

Chrisi Milia

A secluded sandy cove on Alonissos Island in the Sporades, framed by rugged cliffs and crystal-clear turquoise waters

Chrisi Milia is a lovely sandy beach with a backdrop of pine trees, a smooth entry into the sea, and clear, turquoise water, perfect for small children. The beach is moderately organized with a beach bar (try their mojito strawberries), umbrellas and sunbeds, and a very good tavern nearby.

It is located 6 km northeast of Patitiri and is the next bay to Kokkinokastro beach. You can easily park your car and so is the access to the beach: either through the Milia Bay Hotel Apartments (mid-range, family-friendly) or through a path that will lead you to the beach in the southern part.

Remote Gyalia

A secluded cove on Alonissos Island in the Sporades, framed by rugged cliffs and crystal-clear turquoise waters with a windmill.

Gyalia is my favorite beach in Alonissos! Small, picturesque, and remote, with small pebbles and sand, nestled just below Chorio. If you’re lucky, you might enjoy that “you and me alone on earth” moment with your significant other as it attracts few people. It has a small canteen for water and snacks and a beautiful stone windmill. Access is easy by a dirt road.

National Marine Park

A mother and a bay seal monk in Greece.

For an unforgettable experience, I highly recommend joining a boat trip to the National Marine Park of Alonissos. The Marine Park is the first in Greece and, the largest protected marine area in Europe. Its waters shelter the critically endangered Mediterranean monk seal, plus dolphins, whales, and rare seabirds.

Gioura is a deserted island off the coast of Alonissos, characterized by its rocky terrain.

The Park includes the islands of Alonissos, Peristera (or Ksiro), and many more smaller islands. A few of the islands (along with 22 islets) you can visit in the Park are:

  • Gioura is an extremely steep island, with its highest point reaching 570 meters. The island hosts the notable Cave of Cyclops (from Homer’s Odyssey) where the Ceramic Plaque was discovered with engravings dating between 5500 and 5000 BCE.

The stone built old Monastery of Kyra Panagia with icons on the walls and a monk walking.

  • 8 miles away is Kyra-Panagia  (or Pelagonissi) which belongs to Mount Athos. On the island on a low hill stands the 17th-century monastery surrounded by vineyards. You can easily reach the monastery through a paved uphill path and there you will meet the two hospitable monks who live permanently there. The Monastery remains closed between 3 and 6 pm.
  • Piperi  forms the core zone of the National Park where the Mediterranean seals and the seabirds nestle. Access by boat is prohibited.
  • Ta Dyo Aderfia are uninhabited islets where only goats live.

The deserted island of Psathoura's lighthouse.

  • Psathoura  is the northernmost island of the Alonissos Marine Park. It is a volcanic island dominated by the 25-meter lighthouse, the tallest in the Aegean, constructed by Frenchmen in the 19th century, and the ruins of an ancient city on its sea bottom.

Witnessing the endangered monk seal in its natural habitat is not easy as the seals avoid humans but if you happen to see one, the experience will truly move you! Discover more about the Park here: Alonissos National Marine Park .

Visit the Pirate Museum

The pirate museum with glass exhibits and a tourist looking at the pirate swords.

Patitiri port houses the only Pirate Museum in Greece. Alonissos’ terrain with its many small islands, caves, and closed bays, was an ideal base for the pirates. Kostas Maurikis, a passionate diver discovered many items in his dives and housed them all in a three-story privately owned building. Chests, cannons, old maps, a range of items, and impressive informational material take us back 400 years, allowing us to explore not only the pirate history of Alonnisos and the Aegean.

A very exciting place to visit! It is open daily between 11:00 – 19:00.

Hiking the Trails

A remote and rugged area with very high mountains in Alonissos, Greece, surrounded by pristine turquoise waters.

There are around 27 marked hiking trails on the island, which take you through some amazing places, and usually end up at a beach where you can have a relaxing swim. The terrain of Alonnisos is mountainous, especially in its northern part, with higher peaks such as Kouvoli (475 meters) and Geladias (456 meters). The shoreline is steep, rocky, and exposed to the northern winds, with many sea caves where Mediterranean monk seals occasionally find shelter.

A remote and rugged area with very high mountains in Alonissos, with a small church surrounded by pristine turquoise waters.

Some of my favorite trails in Alonissos are:

  • The hike to the Agios Georgios Monastery perched atop a hill, rewards you with panoramic views and a glimpse into the island’s spiritual side.
  • Explore the wild north and hike the beautiful trail that will take you to dramatic cliff vistas in the area of Gerakas and Papi location (there are road signs).
  • The Agioi Anargyroi hike (yellow sign trail 5) will take you through a dense pine forest to the double chapels of Agoi Anargyoi (the older and the newer one). The view from this point towards the sea is very beautiful.

Underwater Museum in Peristera

Modern Shipwreck in Peristera island in Sporades.

Stuck right in the middle of major shipping lanes, Alonissos has a rich nautical history. It’s the very spot where Jason and his Argonauts hopped aboard the Argo to snag the Golden Fleece, and even the Achaeans launched their ships from here to fight the Trojan War. Talk about epic journeys!

If that’s not enough, the seafloor around the island is like an underwater museum, littered with shipwrecks from ancient and Byzantine to modern times proving Alonissos a long-standing naval power.

A diver swimming around ancient vessels in Sporades.

If you’re a recreational diver, get ready for an unforgettable adventure! On the seabed of Peristera island, certified divers will guide you through Greece’s first-ever underwater museum. Explore a perfectly preserved shipwreck from 425 to 420 BCE. The huge merchant ship caught fire or couldn’t withstand the bad weather, sinking while loaded with 3,000 amphorae filled with the famous wines of Mendis (an ancient city in Chalkidiki) and Peparethos (modern-day Skopelos).

Non-divers (like me 😀 ) can explore the shipwreck with virtual reality technology via the  museum website in Chorio Alonissos.

Where to Eat in Alonissos

A table full of Greek delicacies: Alonissos cheesepie, local goat cheese, dolmadakia and Greek salad.

Alonissos is a food destination in Sporades, as you’ll eat magically everywhere on the island. The exclusively family-run businesses will cook you homemade, authentic food with fish and seafood as a base: lobsters, shellfish, and freshly caught fish won’t cost a fortune, olive oil is everywhere organically produced.

An aerial views of a shop selling sweets in Old town in Alonissos.

The island’s food specialties are Alonissos-type cheese pie, grilled figs with honey, kakavia (fish soup), and walnut pie. As for its sweets, you should taste “fouskakia” (traditional donuts), “hamalia” (phyllo crust with a mixture of ground almonds, honey, cinnamon, and nutmeg) and their rose ice cream. The best places to eat in Chorio (Old Village) are:

  • the stylish menu of Thea and vine-draped Astrofegia, and the sweet house  Hayati , with its endless view of the island and the sea. Hayati makes wonderful Greek coffee in the briki – with Angeliki’s homemade sweets, who makes magical apple pie, homemade ice cream, sultana, milk pie, cheesecake but also traditional cheese pie to die for!

Visit the Amazing Alonissos – A Green Paradise of the Sporades Islands

My name is Elli and welcome to my travel guide on the amazing Alonissos island in the Northern Sporades of Greece. I was born and raised in Athens and am a qualified piano teacher. The arts have always been an important part of my life – with photography standing out in the past 15 years.

I have attended many photography seminars, participated in dozens of group exhibitions and in 2019 I presented my first solo exhibition titled “AQUA”. This was a big step for me and I was glad to receive a warm and positive acceptance from the Greek audience and public media.

I’m also the co-founder of an active Greek photography community called: “Greek Instagrammers Events” ( @gr_events ). Through the activities of our community, I actively participate in the organising and curating of group photo exhibitions and special photography experiences.

These experiences include photo-walks, photo-shootings, photography seminars and travel photography projects. Our projects received a Bronze Award at the Greek Tourism Awards of 2019 for successfully showcasing Greek travel destinations through photography and social media.

Photography is one of the reasons that I love to travel. I always look forward to planning my next trip, traveling around the world, discovering new destinations and capturing my adventures through my camera lens.

What Inspired me to Visit Alonissos

Last summer I decided to travel to one of the most beautiful islands of Greece, Alonissos. It’s a green island of the Sporades and is an ideal place for relaxing holidays close to nature by the sea. Having seen many photos, I was impressed and wanted to discover this wonderful place myself.

From the very first moment I arrived on the island, I realised that Alonissos is a green paradise – with beautiful beaches and coves, and dense vegetation that spreads over the entire land and touches the Aegean Sea. A true place of recreation where the senses become one with nature.

The traditional settlement of the old town, the peaceful environment, the lazy beaches, the turquoise waters and the pine-covered paths – all create a unique combination that captivates your mind and makes you fall in love.

Alonissos

A Wonderful 7-Day Trip to Alonissos

I visited Alonissos for one week in August. The island has countless beaches and beautiful places to explore and take photos. The golden sands, colourful stones and red cliffs make for an enchanting scenery. Most beaches are hidden in bays surrounded by pine forests and olive groves.

My days were spent visiting a different beach every day. I always felt impressed by the variety of landscapes, wonderful colours and crystal clear waters. It’s no coincidence that the largest natural marine park of the Mediterranean Sea is found in Alonissos – National Marine Park of Alonissos.

This is a unique habitat for many species of plants and animals such as dolphins, whales, sea turtles and the famous Mediterranean Monk Seal which you can meet by chance while swimming. They are very friendly with people and it’s a once in a lifetime experience to encounter them.

One of the best beaches I visited in Alonissos was Agios Demetrius which has turquoise waters, fine pebbles and a unique exotic beauty. Another gem was Kokkinokastro – an impressive beach with turquoise waters, red sand and pines. I also visited Chrisi Milia which has golden sand and pines.

Other beaches with crystal clear waters that I swam in were the wonderful places of Gerogie Yalos, Milia, Megalos Mourtias, Leftos Yalos beach and the beach of Votsi settlement. Alonissos, in addition to the beautiful beaches, has one of the oldest traditional villages of the Greek Islands.

“Old Alonissos” (some call it “Old Town”) is ideal for walking and exploring the countless alleyways, witnessing one of the most beautiful sunsets in the Aegean Sea, shopping at the traditional shops and tasting the amazing local cuisine at the traditional Greek restaurants and taverns.

One of the most interesting things I did in Alonissos was to visit the underwater museum of the island. It’s the first of its kind in Greece and opened its gates to the public just recently on the 3rd of August 2020.

At the underwater museum I had a unique experience of a virtual 30 metre deep dive at the Peristera Shipwreck – one of the oldest shipwrecks in the world that sank towards the end of the fifth century B.C. It was an amazing experience and I recommend everyone check out this museum.

10 Best Things To Do in Alonissos

Alonissos is blessed with rugged landscapes, hidden beaches and lush pine forests and olive groves. Even better, the island is still relatively unknown by tourists which means you can enjoy magical experiences without big crowds. Here is my list of the top 10 things you can do:

1. Swim in the Crystal Clear Water Beaches

Swimming in the crystal clear water beaches is a must-do. According to a famous travel show host, daily visits to different beaches never end in Alonissos – even if one stays there for two months! You never get tired of exploring and enjoying the endless beaches of Alonissos in summer.

Chrisi Milia Beach

2. Walk around the Old Town of Alonissos

The Old Town of Alonissos is located in a privileged part of the island with a breathtaking view. Visitors can take in the view of the island’s landscape and the surrounding Aegean sea from taverns and cafes that are open all day long in summer. Walk around and enjoy the atmosphere!

3. Trek in Nature and Enjoy the Beautiful Landscape

Enjoy forest walks, visit the old chapels and discover hidden bays. Walk along beautiful ravines such as Vathi Rema which rises from Megalo Chorafi and flows into Megali Ammos. Another fascinating ravine is Kastanorema which runs through the northeastern part of the island.

Alonissos

4. Dive in the Largest Natural Marine Park of the Med

Dive into the largest marine park in the Mediterranean and meet rare wildlife species forming the precious ecosystem of the Northern Sporades. See seals and visit the Peristera Shipwreck. Diving guides provide all the support and gear for a magical scuba diving experience.

5. Visit the Underwater Museum of Alonissos

This is a must-do on every trip to Alonissos! In the underwater museum you will have the opportunity to experience a virtual dive in the shipwreck of Peristera. This shipwreck has a wealth of archaeological treasures and many incredible sea life creatures who call this place home.

Alonissos

6. Watch a Beautiful Sunset Every Night

Enjoy a breathtaking sunset view at Alonissos evernight. You can head down to the beaches to enjoy the show or visit the SunSet Cafe Bar which is easily the best place on the island to watch the sunset. The bar is located just outside the Old Town. Order a couple of drinks and sit back and relax.

7. Taste the Local Greek Cuisine of Alonissos

Taste the Alonissos local cuisine that is based on traditional recipes. Fresh fish and seafood, fish soups, lobster pasta, traditional cheese pies and desserts can certainly be an unforgettable gastronomic experience on this island. Keep reading below for some of my favourite restaurants!

8. Take a Boat Trip around the Island

Alonissos offers many well-organised sea excursions mainly to the “Marine Park of Alonissos” but also to other destinations around the island. Boats leave from Patitiri Port where you will find more information and tickets. Nothing beats being out on the ocean on a beautiful summer day.

9. Road Trip out to Gerakas Beach

If you have your own car and you are in the mood for a road trip, try visiting Gerakas Beach which is located in the northern part of Alonissos. The road from Chora to Gerakas takes 35 minutes. The route is comfortable and what makes it special is the view of a wild and unspoiled landscape.

10. Wander around the Port of Patitiri Village

Walk around the port of Patitiri and visit the Folklore Museum of Alonissos. Among the exhibits of the museum are the pirate exhibits and artifacts from pirate ships of the 16th to 18th century. Υou shouldn’t miss visiting the nearby settlements of Rousoum Gialos, Steni Vala, Kalamaki and Votsi too.

Rousoum Gialos

Warm Hospitality of Alonissos

Hospitality is certainly not missing from the people of Alonissos. During my trip I met many locals who were kind and willing to talk and make me feel welcome. They gave me information about the island’s history, culture and everyday life, and even let me take some nice photos of them.

In order to learn more about the culture I decided to visit the Folklore Museum located in a traditional house in the Old Town. Through the exhibits you get to see traditional needlework, well-preserved furniture, antiques, old photos, rare utensils and other tools used in the past.

I took a short trip back in time and it was touching to discover the way the people of Alonissos lived in the old days. Traditional aesthetics exist on every corner of the Old Town – even nowadays in the local shops, old architecture, beautiful alleyways and local celebrations and festivals.

Traditional customs are revived in annual celebrations and festivals on the island. These cultural events combine gastronomic, historical and religious aspects with the natural environment and the spirit of the locals.

Alonissos

Amazing Local Food of Alonissos

In Alonissos you can enjoy a delicious meal everywhere you go. Taverns and restaurants serve fresh fish, local tuna, organic vegetables and fruits, and homemade food all cooked in virgin olive oil from the olives of the island.

I remember enjoying delicious local dishes at a tavern called Tassia’s Cooking in Steni Vala. Dishes such as homemade cheese pie, fresh fish and other seafood meals were all phenomenal. Another favourite spot of mine was Eleonas in Leftos Gialos where I had a tasty meal of pasta with seafood.

At the Old Town there are many fantastic restaurants such as Thea. This place offers gourmet dishes in an idyllic environment with views over the Aegean Sea. For dessert, visit Hayiati in Chora. Here you can order homemade ice cream. The gastronomy options are truly endless!

Best Places to Stay in Alonissos

Alonissos has plenty of great hotels, rooms to let and studios which offer fantastic accommodation services. Most of them are located in Patitiri Port, Old Town, Rousoum Gialos, Votsis, Steni Vala and Kalamakia.

I booked my stay at the 4 Epoches Hotel . It was a beautiful place located in Steni Vala – 10 km from the main port of Alonissos. Hotel facilities included a pool bar, roof garden, lounge bar, restaurant, gym, parking lot, playground for kids and, of course, elegant and comfortable rooms.

For those who want to stay closer to the center, I highly recommend the Atrium Hotel which is located 900 meters from the port. It has stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the Marine Park of Alonissos. The hotel provides a high quality of standard in a comfortable and relaxing setting.

Favourite Memory of Alonissos

My most unforgettable moment in Alonissos happened while I was swimming on the beach of Agios Demetrius. I was so excited when I suddenly realised that a Monk Seal was swimming next to me. When people came closer to see her, she started playing with everyone!

After a while the seal went to the shore to have a rest and sunbathe. It was a special event and a once in a lifetime experience for those at the beach on that day. In Alonissos, it’s common to see seals when you’re swimming.

Alonissos

Need to Know Before you Go

Alonissos is one of the few natural paradises of the world that is still largely intact. It’s an ideal choice for both relaxation and adventurous activities. Nature explorers and photographers will be thrilled by the variety of plant and animal species located on the land and in the sea.

Summers in Greece are warm with high temperatures. However, in Alonissos, the weather feels cooler because of the north winds and dense pine forests that lower the temperature, especially from August.

The island can be reached by a ferry boat from the ports of Volos, Agios Konstantinos and Mantoudi or by a taxi-boat from the nearby islands of Skiathos, Skopelos and Skiros. The nearest airports are located at Nea Aghialos of Volos, Skiathos island and Skyros Island.

The total trip from Athens to Alonissos takes about four and a half hours (two and a half hours by car from Athens to Mantoudi and then another two hours by boat). Once you arrive it’s best to hire a car so you can discover all the hidden treasures of the island at your own pace.

No matter if you’re travelling solo or with friends, or looking for adventure or relaxation – your holiday in Alonissos will be a beautiful one!

Alonnisos island Mini Guide: The Best Things to See & Do in an Ecological oasis

Come explore the eco-island of the Sporades with its Marine Park, fascinating archaeological sites, an authentic dining scene and more

BY ATHINA FERENTINOU

Translated by avgi daferera, published 01 november 2022, alonnisos/photo: giorgos detsis.

Recently getting first place in the London Times’ list of “Top 25 Lesser-Known Greek Islands”, Alonnisos is a haven ideal for nature-lovers, especially outdoorsy travellers seeking old-school holiday tranquillity, quaint villages, beautiful swims, cultural expeditions and delectable local cuisine. It’s perfect for excursions to rich historical sites, laid back family holidays on scenic sandy beaches with warm, shallow waters, and invigorating hikes along trails weaving through lush landscapes and pretty coastlines with arresting views.

When thinking of Alonnisos, its impressive National Marine Park usually comes to mind. Established in 2003, it is home to the Monachus Monachus Mediterranean monk seal and a multifaceted variety of rare flora and fauna, which attract visitors of all ages from around the world. Numerous species of animals live in the area, harmoniously coexisting with the people who look after and visit this beautiful and vital habitat.

Following years of challenges, local authorities managed to generate an effective stratergy to globally identify Alonissos as the alluring eco-destination that it is. Indeed, when in 2015 Alonnisos took the pioneering decision to completely ban the use of plastic bag on the island, it set an example that is gathering momentum in the rest of Greece. It’s not by chance that about two years ago, ABTA Magazine ( a leading travel industry publication) rated Alonnisos in second place as one of the most eco-friendly destinations in the world.

Exploring the island.

The Hora, or main town, Patitiri (which means wine press), is linked to the island’s wine production, something that Alonnisos was famed for from antiquity until the mid-1950s, when unfortunately ‘phylloxera’, a pest that eats away at the roots of vines and withers its leaves, destroyed almost all of Alonissos’s grapes. Another disaster beset the town in 1965 in the form of a devastating earthquake. It had to be almost completely rebuilt thus its current newish architectural style. Upper Hora’s old world mazey cobblestone streets and low-built houses are gorgeous to ramble around. While hiking up to the town’s highest point is well worth the effort, to enjoy a full view of the picturesque village, whose close-knit houses were built to create a fort-like effect, protecting the villagers against marauding Mediterranean pirates.

A little history

The history of Alonissos is in fact anything but little but here’s a mini synopsis. Evidence of human activity at Cyclops’ cave on the islet of Gioura and Kokkinokastro stretch back 9,000 years to the Mesolithic and early Neolithic ages. Later Bronze age Minoan settlers lead by the legendary hero Stafylos (the term for Grape and an indication that the island was becoming a major hub for wine making) colonised.

Classical times Alonnissos become Ikos or Ikios Kokkinokastro continued as a major settlement and another sprouted on the hill top that is now the ‘Old Village’, above port Patitiri. Wine continued to be the main stay of the island – visiting the beach of Tsoukalia you’ll notice that it’s littered with pot sherds from this era. It’s the location the amphorae used to store wine were made (tsoukalia is one of the words used for pot in Greek). Remnants of a temple dedicated to Aesculapius, the god of healing, have been unearthed at Marpounta on the eastern tip of the island.

Hiking across the island you’ll come across ruined watch towers, vestiges of churches and monasteries and the rubbled remains of settlements destroyed by natural disasters and waves of invaders. Kokkinokastro is touted as being the burial place of Peleus, the father of the mighty Achilles.

Where to go swimming

Agios Dimitrios : The most renowned beach on the island, known for its distinctive shape, bright-blue crystal waters, has a long, pebbled coastline. Part of the seafront has beach bars that rent umbrellas and sunbeds, but there’s also plenty of space to lounge on freely.

Leftos Yalos : A small bay surrounded by pine trees that reach the sea, with a pebbled beach. It has beach bars and a very exciting seabed, ideal for snorkelling in its green-blue waters, which is why it attracts many visitors.

Kokkinokastro Beach,Alonnisos/Photo: Giorgos Detsis

Kokkinokastro : An impressive setting with a kaleidoscope of colours: bright blue waters, golden sand, green trees and red rocks. It is only reachable by steps (60 of them) so it’s not ideal for people with mobility issues. It has a beach bar with sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, and warm shallow waters.

Chrissi Milia : Located near Hora and Patitiri, the fine-sand beach has blue-green, shallow waters and trees that encroach right to the sea’s edge. Ideal for families with young children with an organised section with loungers and umbrellas, but as with many beaches on Alonnisos there’s plenty of space away from the beach bar for those seeking a more peaceful plunge.

Milia beach,Alonnisos/Photo: Giorgos Detsis

Milia : As you approach the beach through the woods, you’ll see its bright blue waters and white pebbles. It’s a serviced beach with beach bars renting sunbeds and umbrellas.

Yialia : A tranquil, sandy beach with some fine pebbles, next to Vrisitsa beach. It’s easily accessible via a paved road, but there’s also a dirt-road leading there from Alonia. On a hill above the beach there’s an old, restored windmill.

Megalos Mourtias : A popular beach that’s easily reachable via a paved road from Hora. It’s serviced, with tavernas, bars and beach bars that rent umbrellas and sunbeds.

Valitsa : Valitsa is a small, low-key beach that’s almost secluded and covered in white pebbles. It’s near Megalos Mourtias, which is reachable via a short trail.

What to See & Do

The island is ideal for outdoor, nature-based activities like cycling, kayaking, sailing and hiking. You can rent gear and receive training by highly skilled instructors (Bayond Watersports, tel.: 0030 693 748 8700, https://alonissos-seacolours.gr). In addition, if you’d like to discover the hidden beauties of Alonnisos, you can rent a boat and explore the other nearby Sporades islands or, alternatively, take an organised day cruise (http://www.seaescapes.gr).

Alonnisos Underwater Museum : If you love diving and are skilled enough, you can visit the Alonnisos Underwater Museum. It’s across from Alonnisos, near the island Peristera, at about 30m depth. The Underwater Museum opened in 2020 and is considered the oldest and most important shipwreck open to the public in the world. It’s one of the largest Classical era shipwrecks, 30m long and 10m wide, and is estimated to weigh more than 150 tonnes. It dates back to approximately 425-450 BC and its size suggests it was among the largest merchant ships of its time, which is said to have been carrying around 3,000 wine amphorae from Skopelos. The museum is open to recreational divers, who can explore the site with the guidance of an experienced, certified diver. Be aware that to be able to dive at the museum you need to at least be an Advanced Open Water Diver. (https://museum.alonissos.gov.gr)

Information centre : If you’re not qualified to dive at the shipwreck, you can always visit the Information Centre, which is housed in the old school. Here, visitors can take a rewarding virtual tour of the shipwreck, seeing the flora and fauna around the shipwreck, as well as jars and objects from the shipwreck in 3D, while there are also amphorae replicas on display.

National Marine Park of Alonnisos and Northern Sporades : It’s the largest marine park in Europe, and can be visited by boat. Opened in 2003, it is home to the Mediterranean Monk Seal and many other protected species. More than 80 bird species and 300 fish species, as well as various animals and reptiles, with the Mediterranean monk seal being the most prominent among them, live at the Marine Park. The Mediterranean monk seals live in sea caves along the rocky coast, but it’s not certain you’ll see one. It’s more probable that you’ll see dolphins playing in the sea. A tour of the park usually includes visits to secluded beaches that are not accessible by land. During your tour, you’ll also visit the small neighbouring islands, each one a unique experience:

Kira-Panagia/Photo: Giorgos Detsis

Kira-Panagia : Kira-Panagia, also known as Pelagonisi, is the largest uninhabited island of the National Marine Park of Alonnisos and Northern Sporades. It’s named after the monastery of Geniseos tis Theotokou that is located at its top.

Peristera : This is the second largest island in the park, with two natural harbours, Peristeri and Vasiliko, and it also is home to many lovely beaches.

Skantzoura : It’s located between Alonnisos and Skyros and is home to seagulls and Eleonora’s falcons. There was a fortress on the island in the Hellenistic times, and there are ruins of farm houses. At the island’s tallest spot, there’s an abandoned monastery with an amazing view.

Psathoura : A volcanic island with low vegetation. You can swim at the island and admire the wild beauty of its beach, since the golden sand is scattered with volcanic rocks. In addition, there’s an impressive 29m tall 19th century lighthouse on the island.

Hiking : There’s a widespread trail network on the island, covering almost the entirety of the island, except the very rough, inaccessible northern part. The routes through thick vegetation, scattered with chapels, and with amazing sea views, make the hikes a one-of-a-kind experience. One stunning route we recommend is the Kastanorema Gorge, at the northeast part of Alonnisos. For more information visit the island’s website: https://alonissos.gr

Historical and Folklore Museum : It’s housed in an impressive stone building in Patitiri. On the first floor, ancient Greek heirlooms, guns, and objects found in warships and pirate ships are on display. You can also see traditional everyday objects and various tools, like a barber’s razor and an olive press, as well as traditional costumes. (Patitiri, tel.: 0030 2424 065390).

Underwater weddings

If you’re looking for a truly exceptional destination where you can signal eternal love to your better half, then Alonnisos may just be the place for you. The island has now made it possible for couples to get married at eight metres depth, standing on the sea bed and mouthing “I Love You Deeply” – the slogan of the campaign promoting this kind of bubbly wedding — to the love of your life. As an international diving destination, the island has all the necessary the facilities for underwater ceremonies, which are conducted by the mayor and permit only a limited number of guests. Note that the ceremony is free, however, if you don’t have diving experience, you’ll need to take some lessons in advance (https://alonissos.gov.gr).

The heart of Homeopathy

Alonissos is home to the International Academy of Classical Homeopathy, where medicine students and other health professionals travel from across the globe to receive training from the godfather of homeopathy, Professor George Vithoulkas and work towards acquiring a Classical Homeopathy Diploma (https://www.vithoulkas.com).

Culinary identity.

Alonissos is a foodie’s paradise. The flavours you’ll find here are unpretentious and authentic, with freshly sourced local and seasonal ingredients offered up in various flavoursome dishes. The famous white Alalunga Alonnisos tuna , prepared at almost every tavern on the island, the fresh fish, lobsters, langoustines and shrimp straight from the fishing boats are some of the island’s characteristic delicacies, while fish soup and lobster pasta is available almost everywhere. Alonissos’ local pies (pittes) are very popular, mostly prepared in a pan (octopus pie, cheese pie, twisted spinach pie). The “hamalia” a wedding dessert, is an almond cookie wrapped in filo and sprinkled with sugar, with lemon or bitter orange flavour, spiced with cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. Other traditional desserts include fouskakia (fried dough balls) and soultana (a type of custard pie). Alonissos’ winemaking culture may have died down, but its modern winemakers continue to produce small quantities of wine for private consumption from the Roditis, Vradiano, Limnio, Mavrokountoura (Mandilaria) and Moschato grape varieties.

Where to eat.

Tassia’s Cooking: On the small port of Steni Vala, here you’ll find fresh fish from the owner’s caique and vegetables plucked straight from their garden. Well-made traditional dishes, many including fish (scorpionfish with lemon juice, lobster pasta, grilled mackerel), fried stuffed courgette blossoms, penne with Alonnisos tuna and Alonnisos cheese pie with homemade filo dough are some of the must-try specialties. (Steni Vala, tel.: 0030 2424 065545)

Akrogiali: A taverna that hangs over the water, with a mesmerising sea view, this scenic place serves a wonderful array of mainly fish and seafood dishes including one starring the local tuna, served plain or with tomato. The tuna pasta, the garfish with garlic sauce, and the crispy fried fish are all delicious, as are the char-grilled beef patties. The menu also includes a wide selection of meze dishes that pair beautifully with tsipouro. (Patitiri, tel.: 0030 24240 65236)

O Ditis ke I Kalimnia: A cute tavern at the edge of the bay with a cool balcony with a sea view. Tasty dishes like dolmadakia (stuffed vine leaves) with minced meat and egg-and-lemon sauce, scorpionfish with lemon sauce and dusky grouper with lemon sauce, goat in tomato sauce, marinated Mediterranean horse mackerel, stuffed calamari and lobster pasta. (Steni Vala, tel.: 0030 24240 65545)

Para Thin Alos: A nostalgic tavern right next to the sea, with seating under the shade of an olive tree. Homemade food (gemista (rice-stuffed tomatoes and peppers), moussaka, imam bayildi) made with succulent, home-grown vegetables, olive oil of their own production, and their own fresh catch of the day. We recommend the octopus stew, the lobster pasta and the pasta with shrimp and langoustine, as well as the goat cooked in a Dutch oven. (Tzortzi Gialos, tel.: 0030 2424 066029)

Eleonas: Within a complex next to the sea that includes a tavern, with a café and a beach bar, in a verdant area within an olive grove, the homonymous tavern mainly serves fresh fish (both grilled and fried) and seafood. The menu also includes Mediterranean dishes (homemade shrimp ravioli, seafood linguine) and modern Greek cuisine (shrimp orzo, risotto with apaki and artichokes). It’s one of the few places where you’ll find some particularly well made dishes representative of the island’s unique culinary tradition, such as octopus pie, wild greens pie, onion pie, twisted spinach and cheese pie, all of them fried, soutzoukakia with local artichokes and Alonnisos tuna pasta. They serve local wine. (Leftos Gialos, tel.: 0030 2424066066, fb https://el-gr.facebook.com/eleonas.alonissos/ )
