My personal tips for the Split to Hvar trip

• If you like a good view and want so sit together, be early at the port, in summer there can be huge lines for boarding the boat, and as there is free seating, you will simple get better seats if you are first in line.
• If you don’t care about where sit, be the last one to board, as you will then have it way easier with getting your luggage when you need to get of the boat
• Bring a bottle of water, most boats have air-condition, but with +300 people in a fairly small place it can still feel quite warm. Water (And other drinks) you can buy on the boat, but it is way cheaper bringing your own.
• All operators have fairly good ships, so do not pick based on the operator, pick based on the departure time which suits you the most.
• Suitcase are usually pilled up somewhere on the boat, so make sure you have nothing breakable.

These catamaran companies sail up to 18 times daily between Split and Hvar Town, making them more frequent than ferries. Jadrolinija also has catamarans sailing between Split, Jelsa, and Stari Grad on Hvar Island.

Additionally, some catamarans connect the town of Hvar and Split with other islands and towns, like Korcula, Vis, Lastovo, and Makarska. Catamarans are more expensive than ferries, but if you are on a budget, Jadrolinja’s catamarans that sail on the longer routes to Korcula, Vis, or Brac have almost four times lower prices per person than Jadrolinija’s Split-Hvar-Split catamaran or those of other companies such as TP-Line and Kapetan Luka.

The Proversa catamaran offers a direct connection, while the Arta catamaran stops in Vis before reaching Hvar. The HSC Kalelarga catamaran sails between Split and Hvar via Milna on the island of Brac. The journey on TP Line’s catamarans takes 55 minutes on a direct line, 2 hours and 25 minutes via Vis, and 1 hour and 15 minutes via Milna on Brac.

Kapetan Luka offers a variety of ferry options for travelers who want to go from Split to Hvar or from Hvar to Split. They provide a direct Split-Hvar-Split route and longer routes to Korcula Island and Dubrovnik. Additionally, they have an indirect sailing schedule via Brac Island. Kapetan Luka provides Split Hvar ferry service throughout the year. The journey time aboard Kapetan Luka’s catamarans is 55 to 65 minutes, depending on the line.

More Info and Tips on Taking a Ferry from Split to Hvar

• Arrive early! To ensure a smooth ferry journey, arriving at least 30 minutes before departure time is advisable, especially during peak season when long queues may occur. If you’re traveling by car during peak season, arriving at least 2 hours before departure is recommended.
• Check ferry schedules! Before making your way to the ferry terminal, check the schedules to avoid delays or unexpected changes.
• Prepare for crowds! The ferries tend to get crowded during peak season, so be prepared for some waiting.
• Traveling with pets! If you plan to travel with a small pet, please note that they are allowed on catamarans in closed spaces as long as they are not dangerous for passengers. However, the pets must be transported in 45 x 35 x 25 cm bags with waterproofed bottoms, and the price for a pet is 50% off the price per adult. All other animals are prohibited unless approved by the management on request and under special conditions.
• Pack light! Passengers are allowed 20 kg of luggage per person, the maximum luggage weight. You cannot purchase more baggage.
• Traveling by bicycle! The transport of bicycles is only permitted on car ferries. You cannot get a bicycle onboard a catamaran.
• Book your tickets online! If you want to benefit from special deals, avoid long waiting queues, and secure a spot on your preferred ferry, booking your tickets online in advance is recommended.

How to Reach Hvar from Split by Speedboat

If you want a quick and luxurious option to reach Hvar, then speedboats are the best way to travel from Split to Hvar. They are perfect for groups, couples seeking a romantic experience, or anyone who wants to enjoy a luxurious mode of transportation. Speedboats are fast and take you from Split to Hvar in as little as one hour.

Several private speedboat companies operate in Split, so it’s important to research and compare prices to find the best deal. We recommend using providers like Bookaway or GetYourGuide to compare different speedboat offers and find the best deal.

A one-way speedboat transfer price usually starts at 500€ for a 4-person boat, and the price goes up with the size of the boat.

As you can see, the speedboat costs are considerably higher than other options, and availability may be limited. Speedboats aren’t the most suitable option for budget travelers.

Speedboat transfers offer the most convenient way of traveling from Split Airport to Hvar. The transfer from the airport to the nearby embarkation dock is already included in the price. Opting for a speedboat transfer saves you the hassle of traveling from Split Airport to Split Port and waiting for a ferry to Hvar. Not only is it a more comfortable mode of transport, but the slightly higher price may be justified given the added convenience.

Traveling by Car to Hvar

To get from Split to Hvar by car, you will need to take car ferry operated by Jadrolinija. The car ferry sails between Split and Hvar four times a day in winter and seven times a day in high season, taking approximately 2 hours. Upon arrival at Stari Grad, it will take around 30 minutes to reach Hvar Town by car.

The ticket price is 5.71€ per person during the low season and 8.10€ per person during the high season. A car costs 34.24€ in the low season and 45.77€ in the high season.

How to Get from Split Airport to Hvar

If you are traveling from Split Airport to Hvar, the fastest way is by speedboat transfer. As we have already explained, the speedboat transfer costs 500€ for a 4-person speedboat, and the prices go up with the size of the speedboat.

The embarkation dock is less than 1 km from the Airport, and the transfer to the dock is included in the price of a speedboat transfer.

The speedboat, having more flexibility than a ferry or catamaran, has the luxury of dropping you off as close to your Hvar accommodation. We use the Bookaway website to search for speedboat transfers between Split Airport and Hvar.

However, this option may not be suitable for budget travelers due to its high cost. Thankfully, other options offer more affordable prices and still get you to your destination in a reasonable amount of time.

If you have rented a car at Split Airport, driving to Hvar from the airport is possible. The journey involves driving to the port of Split and then taking the 2-hour ferry ride to Stari Grad. From there, take the 30-minute drive to Hvar Town. Check the best car rental deals here!

Shuttle bus transfers from Split Airport to Split Central Bus Station run regularly and take approximately 40 minutes. The port of Split is located just across from the Split Central Bus Station, within a 2-minute walk. From Split Port, you can take a ferry or a catamaran to Hvar.

Lastly, private transfers are available from Split Airport to Hvar by car or van if you prefer a more direct route. These transfers can be arranged through various companies and offer a more personalized experience with the added benefit of door-to-door service. The private transfer costs around 250€ for a 3-person vehicle, including ferry costs. The prices for a van transfer from Split Airport to Hvar for eight persons start at 300€. Hvar Airport

Hvar doesn’t have its own airport, so if you’re traveling from other parts of Croatia or Europe, you’ll need to fly to Split Airport. From there, you can easily reach Hvar using the various transportation methods mentioned earlier. While Brac Island, Zadar, and Dubrovnik airports are also available, they are further away from Split and offer fewer transportation options to reach Hvar.

However, Hvar does have an airstrip designed for small panoramic and sports planes. This modest airstrip, located just outside Stari Grad, is a field. Our friends flew to Hvar from Pula using a small Cessna aircraft, which was able to land on this modest airstrip.

Accommodation in Hvar

Hvar offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit all budgets and preferences. The island has numerous hotels, hostels, villas, and private apartments available for rent. Booking your accommodation in advance is recommended as Hvar is a popular tourist destination and tends to get fully booked quickly. However, if you’re traveling during the shoulder season (May and September), you may find more availability and better deals.

For a more authentic experience, consider staying in one of Hvar’s charming villages like Stari Grad or Jelsa. These smaller towns offer a quieter atmosphere and are perfect for those looking to escape the crowds. You can also opt for a private villa or apartment rental in these areas, which offer more privacy and space. If you prefer to be close to the action, staying in Hvar Town would be your best option. Here, you’ll find a mix of luxury and budget accommodations and proximity to all the main attractions and nightlife.

About Hvar Island

Not far from the Croatian coast, Hvar Island is a very popular summer destination, as well as a must on any Split itinerary .

With its incredible beaches, beautiful natural landscapes, cute historical town and awesome food, it’s easy to see why!

This island has become famous recently for its party reputation, however even if you’re not into big parties it’s still an incredible island to visit.

You can do a day trip to Hvar from Split and enjoy the natural and historical beauty of the island, without ever seeing the party side of it, or stay a few nights and live the nightlife.

How do I get from Split to Hvar?

Hvar is a fairly small island and the only way to get there is by boat. You can either take a ferry or go on a organised boat trip.

The ferry will be cheaper and give you more freedom to do as you please in Hvar, but you will then have to pay for all activities and extras.

Tours can be a bit pricier but will usually include everything, meaning you can just sit back, relax and enjoy your Hvar day trip.

There are a number of different ferry companies that run the route from Split to Hvar. In high season there are up to 18 journeys per day, giving you lots of choice for your departure times.

The price for a one way journey from Split harbour Hvar Island is 39 HKR per person.

How long is the ferry from Split to Hvar?

The ferry takes around one hour to get from Split to Hvar. Depending on the company and sea conditions it ranges from 50 to 70 minutes.

In summer the first ferry is at 7:40AM, and the last one leaving Hvar for Split is at 9:30PM (in winter there are less rides).

You can easily take these ferries and organise your own day tour around Hvar Island. Alternatively let’s look at the tour option in more detail.

Best things to do in Hvar Island in one day

So what is there to actually do on Hvar Island? Why does Hvar feature on every Croatia bucket list ? Whether you travel by ferry or do a day tour, what will you actually be exploring on this beautiful Croatian island?  

We decided to do our own thing and travel to Hvar with the ferry. There was five of us so we decided it would be cheaper and more fun to rent a car and drive around the island.

I’ve outlined below some of the best things that you can do on Hvar Island if you’re going there solo without a tour.

You can use this as a 1-day Hvar itinerary (assuming you get the first ferry to Hvar and the last one back to Split).

Explore the Hvar Old Town centre

Before you go adventure off to explore the island, the first thing you should do in Hvar Island is explore Hvar Town. This is where you will disembark with the ferry and one of the most beautiful spots on the island.

The old town centre is simply beautiful. The streets and houses are built with traditional stone and have that rustic and old feel to them.

You could wander around the streets all day long, and never get tired of them. The main spots in the town that you should definitely visit are St Stephen’s Cathedral and St Stephen’s Square, right in front of it.

Admire the view from the Spanish Fortress

As you’re wandering around the cute streets of Hvar Town, head up towards Fortica, also known as the Spanish Fortress. From up here you can enjoy an absolutely incredible view.

Entrance to the fortress is 25 HKR. The fort is very well preserved and you can easily spend about an hour exploring all the rooms and cellars of it, as well as the sweeping views over the harbour of Hvar.

Rent a vintage beetle car and drive around the island

We didn’t expect this to be a thing, but were pleasantly surprised to find lots of colourful vintage beetle cars parked on the outskirts of the main square.

If you’re looking to drive around the island with style, this is the way to do it!

We personally had a bad experience since our car rental ripped us off, but don’t let that deter you! Just make sure that what you sign makes sense, drive responsibly and you’ll have a great time.

Hvar has a beautiful coastline. Even driving without a specific end in mind can be very fun. Just enjoy the wind through your hair, the sunshine on your skin and the rolling drives with their epic views.

Explore the beaches of Hvar

Driving for the sake of driving can be fun, but driving with an aim in mind is even better. Once you have your car, it’s time to explore the beaches of Hvar!

Croatia is home to some beautiful beaches, and the same goes for Hvar. We just drove aimlessly for a bit until we eventually reached Malo Zarace Beach. We were the only ones in this little slice of paradise.

There were a lot of rocks and getting in the sea for a swim was a bit painful on the feet, but the crystal clear water and having the beach just for us made it worth it. It’s located about a half hour drive from Hvar Town.

Other popular beaches in Hvar that you can check out are Dubovica Beach, Pokonji Dol Beach, and Milna Beach. At all these beaches you will find a turquoise water and a pristine beach.

After exploring the quaint streets of Hvar Town, enjoying the view from the Spanish Fortress and swimming in the clear Croatian sea, you’re probably feeling pretty knackered! It makes for a pretty busy Hvar day trip itinerary.

But there’s one final thing you should do before getting the last ferry back to Split; head over to Hula Hula Beach Bar for a sunset drink!

Hula Hula Beach Bar is located in prime position on the beach, with epic sunset views over the sea.

Hvar is a bit of a party town so even if you visit only for a day, you should get a taste of its nightlife. Grab a drink, some snacks and relax as you watch the sun go into the sea. You could even dance a little if you want!

Where to stay for your day trip to Hvar

I’ve outlined below some accommodation options both in Split and Hvar.

You can easily visit Hvar Island on a day trip from Split, and that’s what this article is about, however I don’t blame you if you want to stay longer and immerse yourself in the island vibe!

I recommend staying in the Old Town of Split. That way you will be able to easily walk to all the main attractions in Split, as well as to the ferry terminal.

Budget: Youth Hostel Marija – Hvar is known for being a bit of a party island. If you’re going for the nightlife, you will have an awesome time in a hostel! This one has a fun reputation, great location, spacious dorms and even a pool.

What to pack for a Hvar day trip

You don’t really need anything special beyond your usual travel essentials and normal outfits. However I’ve listed below a couple items that will make your day trip to Hvar smoother.

Power bank – you don’t want your phone to run out of battery while you’re busy capturing the beautiful views and beaches!

Stainless steel water bottle – save money and reduce plastic consumption by bringing your own water bottle and refilling it.

Sunscreen – I was there in September, and the sun was still really hot! Don’t ruin your trip by getting sunburnt.

Hat – Same as above, the sun is strong, you’ll want some shade for your head during the day!

Waterproof bag – Even if I’m not planning any extreme activities, I like to use a waterproof backpack when I travel to beach and seaside destinations. I’d rather be safe than sorry and ensure all my stuff is dry!

Also, if it’s not on your bucket list yet: The Krka Waterfalls are one of Europe’s most beautiful waterfalls and are located just a 1.5-hour drive from Split. Split to Hvar by Direct Ferry

The fastest and easiest way for passengers to get from Split to Hvar is with the catamaran ferries of Krilo (Kapetan Luka), TP Line and Jadrolinija. These are the three main ferry operators that leave from Split Port and bring you straight to Hvar Town.

Book your ferry ticket from Split to Hvar in advance during high season (June-September)

For one of the most popular routes in Croatia, boat tickets for the route from Split to Hvar sell out quickly.

Croatia has become a very popular holiday destination in the last few years (particularly Split and Zdar). Due to this steep increase in tourism, not only accommodations but also boat tickets for the Split-Hvar route sell out quickly.

If you travel in the high season (June-September), reserve your tickets online 3-5 days in advance . We recommend that you book through BookAway , because they allow ticket cancellation for free up to 24 hours before departure.

Prefer to buy your ticket at the harbour? In that case, line up at the port at least an hour before departure if you travel during peak season. Better yet: go to the ticket office early in the morning to avoid waiting in the hot sun and increase the chances of getting a ticket on your desired departure time.

If you can’t board your preferred ferry, you’ll have to wait for the next ferry from Split to Hvar.

The ferries from Split to Hvar depart from Split Ferry Port , which is just within walking distance from most hotels in the city centre.

They dock at the Harbour of Hvar in Riva. This pier is on the western part of Hvar Island.

Alternative: Jadrolinija ferry

Another option is the ferry from Jadrolinija. While it costs almost the same as other ferries, with tickets starting at €25 ($28), the journey takes a little bit longer and comes with a little less luxury. This catamaran has six trips daily from 09:45 to 19:35.

Important: Although you can book tickets for Jadrolinija online, this does not guarantee a seat on the boat you have booked. When you travel with Jadrolinija from Split to Hvar, the rule full=full applies.

We, therefore, recommend queuing at least an hour before the departure time and taking one of the early departures. If you miss the boat you have booked, you can take a later boat to Hvar Island.

On busy days, there’s a chance you’d be waiting half a day in the blazing sun for your boat. That is why we recommend that you book with Kapetan Luka’s catamaran or TP Line’s high-speed ferry . Both companies guarantee a place on board.

Travelling during winter months?

Fewer ferries operate from Split to Hvar in the winter months, so make sure to double-check schedules a day or two prior to your trip. Kapetan Luka and Jadrolinija ferry services only depart 1-2 times a day in the low season.

It’s also worth noting that ferries aren’t allowed to sail during severe weather conditions. No need to worry about that during the summer months, though!

From May through October, blue skies and warm weather prevail. On the chance that your ferry cannot sail from Split to Hvar Island, you will have the option to take the next available ferry or receive a full refund.

Split to Hvar by Car ferry via Stari Grad

If you want to get to Hvar Island from Split with your car, then the direct ferry to Hvar town is not an option.

Instead, you have to take the car ferry from Split to Stari Grad on Hvar Island’s northern coast. From there, you can travel 20 km by land to Hvar town centre.

Step 1: Split to Stari Grad by Car Ferry

Car ferries to Hvar dock only at Stari Grad Ferry Port . This is where you need to get to when travelling from Split to Hvar by car.

The ticket for the ferry route from Split to Stari Grad costs €8.40 ($9.30) per adult and €48 ($53) for a small car. This rate applies to a car less than 5m in length. For more vehicle prices, we recommend that you check the Jadrolinija website.

The car ferry journey from Split to Stari Grad takes 2 hours. This longer travel time is because the car ferry is considerably larger and cannot sail as fast as the fast ferry to Hvar town for example.

Step 2: Stari Grad to Hvar Town by Car

Hvar town is 22 km away from Stari Grad. From Stari Grad Ferry Port, it is a 30-minute drive to Hvar town.

For foot passengers: Stari Grad to Hvar town by Taxi or Bus

Are you taking this ferry not because you are travelling by car, but because the direct Split to Hvar ferry was fully booked? In that case, you can also travel from Stari Grad Port to Hvar town by taxi.

Taxi rates start from €36 ($40) for the 30-minute ride. As with most tourist destinations, please be aware that taxi drivers on Hvar Island will try to charge higher prices. Make sure to negotiate a fixed price first before getting onboard.

If you’re not in a hurry, you can also take a bus to Hvar Town for €5 ($5.50). The bus ride takes just around 30 minutes, but departures aren’t as frequent.

Bus trips have a 1-hour interval in the morning and 2 to 3-hour intervals in the afternoon and evening. Note that bus service is reduced to four trips per day during the off-peak season.

Split to Hvar by Bus

The combined bus+ferry transfer is a convenient way to travel from   Split Ferry Port directly to Hvar town centre. Krilo (Kapetan Luka) operates this route.

With this option, you don’t need to arrange a separate transfer from Hvar pier to the bus stop in Hvar, where you can catch buses to Stari Grad and Jelsa.

Bus fares start from €27 ($30) and the journey takes around 40m.

Bus options from Split to Hvar

Split to hvar by ferry via jelsa.

One way to reach Hvar town from Split is through Jelsa, a town northeast of Hvar Town. This is an option we only recommend if the direct ferries from Split to Hvar town are fully booked.

The journey between Split and Jelsa, Hvar takes 1 hour and 40 minutes. From Jelsa, it takes another 30 minutes to travel to Hvar Town.

Note that this option is also only available for foot passengers and is not a car ferry service.

Step 1: Split to Jelsa by Ferry

Two ferry companies operate the Split to Jelsa route: Jadrolinija and KSC Naranca.

Jadrolinija offers significantly cheaper tickets at €9.70 ($10.70) per foot passenger but there is only one departure per day at 16:30. This ferry makes a brief stop in Bol on Brač Island before continuing to Stari Grad and finally Jelsa on Hvar Island.

KSC Naranca operates high-speed ferries with a slightly faster travel time but at a higher cost. Like Jadrolinija, they also make a short stop in Bol before arriving at Jelsa. If you want to arrive in Jelsa earlier in the day, KSC Naranca’s 11:45 departure is your best option.

Step 2: Jelsa to Hvar Town by Taxi

This ferry from Split arrives on the north coast of Hvar Island. From here, Hvar town is located some 26 km southwest of Jelsa.

A 30-minute taxi ride is your only option to get from Jelsa to Hvar town. Fares start from €49 ($54).

Split to Hvar by Day or Night Trip

If staying a few days on the island of Hvar is difficult to fit into your holiday, there is still the option to visit the island as a day trip from Split.

Prepare yourself, though. With a full-day tour, your day will be packed so you can make the most of your visit to Hvar and its surrounding waters. With a day tour, you will depart in the early morning with the ferry from Split to Hvar and make a stop at various highlights around the island during the day.

Travel from Split to Hvar

Fabled for its mixture of the patented laid-back atmosphere of the Dalmatian island together with the cosmopolitan sensibilities brought in by crowds of visitors hailing from all four corners of the world, the town of Hvar is one of the most popular summer destinations in Croatia. Best known for its luxurious summer resorts, lush Mediterranean nature and vibrant nightlife, Hvar also boasts incredible cultural heritage, including a magnificent hilltop fortress overlooking the town, thirteenth century walls, mazy medieval Old Town as well as the largest and most picturesque public square in whole of Dalmatia.

Being an island town, Hvar is accessible only by boat , as the island has neither bridges nor airports connecting it to the mainland. Nonetheless, travelling to Hvar is hardly a hindrance, as fast-ferries departing from the port of Split sail towards the island town almost every 30 minutes during the sailing season which usually lasts from the beginning of April up to the later parts of October.

Currently, two local operators – Jadrolinija and Krilo: Kapetan Luka – operate the fast-ferry lines (these being locally known as catamaran lines) connecting Split to the town of Hvar. Almost all fast-ferry lines between Split and Hvar are direct, although there are a few exceptions (see the table below). The direct trip from Split to Hvar lasts about one hour and tickets can be purchased online or directly at one of the boots in the port of Split. As of June 13, 2021, a regular ticket for a Jadrolinija fast-ferry to Hvar costs 110 HRK , while Krilo: Kapetan Luka charges 100 HRK. However, some of the lines are subsidized by the state, most notably departures from Split at 15:00 (Jadrolinija) and at 17:00 (Krilo) which are priced 55 HRK during the summer months. For a more extensive look at the lines and pricing, please consult the table below.

Travelers with cars should be aware that fast-ferry lines between Split and Hvar only carry passengers, so those wishing to take their vehicles to the island must board the regular ferry line connecting Split with another town on the island – Stari Grad. The trip from Split to the ferry port of Stari Grad lasts about two hours and once disembarked, it takes another 25 minute drive to the town of Hvar. Alternatively, passengers with cars might consider a more time-consuming option of driving down to Drvenik and taking a short ferry trip to Sućuraj , from where they can then drive across the entire island in order to reach Hvar. But that option might be better for those coming from the direction of Dubrovnik.

Navigating the Ferry Split to Hvar: an Insider’s Guide

Sitting just off the Croatian coast, Hvar Island is one of the most visited Adriatic islands. The only way to easily reach the island is to take a ferry from Split to Hvar.

There are three ferry routes from Split to Hvar. The most popular route, and the shortest journey, will take travelers to Hvar Town. This ferry takes just one hour. Other travel options include Split to Stari Grad and Split to Jelsa.

This page will cover everything that you need to know about the Hvar to Split ferry in Croatia. We are going to discuss journey times, potential prices, and routes to the ferry port. This information should make reaching Hvar simple.

Get Ferry Split to Hvar

There are multiple routes from Split to Hvar Island. These routes operate throughout the year, although during the peak summer months, you will often find that many more routes are running.

Those taking the journey to Hvar from Split will either be traveling on a catamaran or the car ferry service. The prices and sail times are slightly different for each of them. A foot passenger cannot go on the car ferry service, while a car cannot go on the catamaran.

The Split to Hvar ferry always leaves from Split Port. This is centrally located and is within easy reach of Split Train Station.

The prices for the Hvar ferry will vary depending on the ferry route and the time of year you are traveling. Depending on the exchange rate, foot passenger prices start as low as $18, and vehicles as low as $37.

Journey Time Split to Hvar

The journey time to Hvar will depend on the boat that you are taking, as well as the route that it is following:

• If you are traveling to Hvar Town, you can expect the ferry to reach Hvar Town within one hour.
• A journey to Stari Grad Ferry Port takes 2 hours.
• A trip to Jelsa takes 1.5 hours.

Do note that trips to Jelsa are indirect connections. There will be stop-offs along the way.

Ferry Ports on Hvar Island

There are three ports on Hvar Island. You can travel to each of them from Split. Different ferry companies may offer different routes, and it may be worth thinking about which part of Hvar is most appealing to you.

• Stari Grad Ferry Port

Jelsa does have the fewest routes heading to it from the Split ferry port, with services generally only operating in the afternoon. The other routes operate from the early morning through to the late afternoon.

If you need to get into Jelsa but miss the ferry, then there are bus connections from both Stari Grad and Hvar Town.

Ferries Traveling to Hvar Island

Four companies operate routes to Hvar Island:

• Kapetan Luka
• Jadrolinija
• Adriatic Fast Ferries

Three of these ferry companies will only allow you to reach Hvar Town. The Jadrolinija ferry can take you to all three ferry ports on Hvar Island.

You can purchase tickets online for all of these routes.

Which Ferry Company is Best?

No one company is the best for traveling from Split to Hvar Island. It will be dependent on where you are heading on Hvar Island, as well as the time that you need to be there.

Most people do find the Jadrolinija ferries the best option. This is because they leave on a fairly regular basis and they are the only ferry company to cover all three routes.

You should have a comfortable trip no matter which Hvar-Split ferry you get on, though. All of the routes come highly rated.

Split to Hvar Ferry Amenities

Because the journey takes an hour to two hours, the Split to Hvar ferries are not brimming with amenities.

There will always be ample seating for anybody traveling on the ferries, with Jadrolinija offering some of the more comfortable seats. This seating will be both inside and up on the deck of the ferry.

Depending on which route you travel on, as well as the type of ferry, you may also find a small shop. On some Jadrolinija ferries, you will also find a small restaurant.

Do bear in mind that during the summer months and the high season, these ferries can get incredibly crowded. This means that if you are not on the ferry from Split earlier, you may not be able to take advantage of all that the ferry has to offer.

Cost of Ferry Hvar to Split

The cost of the Split to Hvar ferry will depend on when you are traveling, as well as the route that you are taking.

We will quote prices in Euros. These prices were accurate at the time of writing, but they may be subject to change throughout 2023 and beyond.

Foot Passengers From Split, Croatia to Hvar Island

• €16 to Hvar Town
• €8 to Stari Grad
• €9 to Jelsa

Bicycle Passengers From Split to Hvar

• €7.50 to Stari Grad

Passengers with Pets

This will depend on the pet that you are carrying. Per pet, it could be from €8 to €16. These trips only go to Hvar Town.

You can only travel to Stari Grad with a vehicle.

The first price quoted is for the low season and the second for the high season.

• Cars – €34/€43.
• RVs, caravans, trailers, etc. – €66/€88.
• Motorcycles – €10/€12.50.

Pre-Book Split to Hvar Ferry

If you are traveling on foot, then you do not need to pre-book your boat trip. Even during the summer months, there is always ample space on these boats. All of the operators will have ticket offices in Split port (close to the city center) for you to buy a ticket before travel.

It may be worth booking in advance, though. It will give you peace of mind, particularly during the winter season when fewer ferries are running and you don’t want to miss one.

If you are taking one of the car ferries to a Hvar Harbour, then we do recommend that you book in advance. Places can fill up pretty quickly. Again, you can book on the website for your selected ferry service.

If you buy tickets online, you will be sent a digital ticket that you must show during boarding.

Hvar Island Ferry Operating Months

The Hvar Island boats operate throughout the year, with more services running during the summer season.

Jadrolinija is the only company to operate year-round. The other companies stop at various points throughout the year, but most will only operate their services between April and October.

No matter the time of the year that you are heading to Hvar, Croatia, there will always be at least one catamaran and one car ferry operating.

Departure Times For Hvar Ferry

You should consult the Hvar Ferry operator’s website to find out their departure times. This is because they can vary throughout the year. Departure times are based on demand (higher in the summer season), the tides, and sea conditions

For most routes, there should be at least three departures per day during the summer season. The ferries start leaving early morning with the last ferries leaving at 4 pm/5 pm that day. Jelsa may sometimes have a single departure, often in the late afternoon.

During the off-season, most ferries do not operate. This means that there could be just one or two departures per day. These are always through Jadrolinija where the service runs non-stop throughout the year.

Split to Ferry Port Journey

The split ferry port is conveniently located within walking distance of the central bus station and central bus terminal. If you travel into Split on public transport and head for one of these destinations then you can’t miss it.

If you are driving into Split with a car or another vehicle, then follow the signs to the ferry port. The road signage is great throughout Croatia, particularly in Split.

If you are traveling from Split Airport, then you can get on the shuttle bus to the center of Split. This leaves from right outside the departures at Split Airport. This service continues to run as long as planes are taking off and landing at Split Airport .

Pedestrians on Hvar Ferry

Ferry operators offering ferry services on a catamaran are equipped to deal with pedestrians. They can also take bicycles.

Unfortunately, foot passengers cannot use the Split to Stari Grad car ferry. This is strictly for vehicles and bicycles. This means that your only option is either the ferry to Hvar Town or Jelsa.

Bicycles On Hvar Direct Ferry

If you wish to take a bicycle on Hvar ferries, then you have three options:

• Catamaran to Hvar Town
• Catamaran to Stari Grad
• Car ferry to Stari Grad

Unfortunately, there is no route to Jelsa with a bike.

Pets on Ferry Ride

Only catamarans to Hvar Town can accept pets. You can only take dogs, cats, and birds on the catamaran. These will have to be paid for separately.

If you are taking a pet, then it should be secured at all times. Cats and birds must be in some sort of cage or carrier. You can take a dog on a leash.

Split Car Ferry to Hvar Island

Jadrolinija operates a car ferry to Stari Grad. This ferry can accept vehicles up to 20 feet in length. The cost of travel will depend on the size of your vehicle. You may be charged extra when you board the ferry.

Those who do not want to take their car on the ferry ride can leave it at the nearby Split train station.

If you do not have a vehicle, then there are plenty of car rental places throughout Hvar, including Stari Grad Town . However, public transport is so good that most people find they do not need it.

Hvar Town From Hvar Port

No matter where you dock on the island, you will find ample public transportation. All major municipalities on Hvar Island are connected. The frequency of the buses can change, particularly during the summer season, but you shouldn’t have to wait too long.

If you do not wish to take the bus, then there are always taxis around the port that can take you anywhere that you want on the island.

If you want to take a day tour around Hvar, then we recommend that you look into car hire so you are not beholden to public transport, which can get very busy on the island during the summer months.

Boats Hvar to Other Islands

There is a day trip to the Pakleni Islands from Hvar. It is a short trip, and there are departure times throughout the day.

The trip to the Pakleni Islands takes just 10-20 minutes, depending on the route that you take. This is a beautiful island group in Croatia and is a true paradise.

If you head here, then one of the main attractions is hiring a private speedboat, although there is also nature to explore for those who are keen to stay on land.

Final Thoughts

Multiple services are operating from Split to Hvar in Croatia. During both the summer and the winter seasons, you will always find multiple services operating.

If you are traveling on foot or with a bicycle, you do not need to book in advance. If you are taking a car to Split and hoping to get it over to Hvar, then we recommend that you book before you head to Croatia. It will save you a lot of hassle.

You can easily book all tickets between Split and Hvar online. The cost isn’t too high, especially if you are traveling without a vehicle.

There are many ferries from Split to Hvar island. Hvar is the most visited destination among all Central Dalmatia islands . Hvar has always been the best and most frequently connected island with the mainland.

Whether you are traveling by car or on foot, Hvar island has very frequent connections to almost all island destinations. Only two towns on the island have only car ferries connections:

Some destinations like Hvar town and Jelsa can be reached directly only by passenger fast boats known as catamarans .

International Ferries To Stari Grad (Hvar)

It’s important to point out that Hvar island’s Stari Grad town is the only location connected with international car ferries from Italy . Stari Grad has a seasonal car ferry from Ancona and Pescara that first arrives at Stari Grad port and afterwards proceeds to Split.

Taking a ferry from Italy to Split is your best option if you are traveling from Italian Adriatic coast. The major departure ports from Italy to the opposite shore of the Adriatic are Ancona and Pescara.

From Italy you can also travel by ferry to other Croatian destinations such as Split, Zadar and Dubrovnik.

Car Ferries From Split To Hvar (Stari Grad)

Car ferry line 635, from/to Stari Grad (Hvar) to Split runs in low season (September 28th until May 28th) three times a day.

Ferries on N°635 line to Stari Grad runs very often in high season between May 30th to September 28th . You have seven departures daily, the earliest at 01:30 AM (only from June 29th to September 1st). The crossing time is 120 minutes.

The next one is at 05:00 AM (keep in mind, on this one, cargo vehicles have priority).

Coastal line from Rijeka to Dubrovnik is not operating since 2015! Stari Grad port has become the most important island harbor for all ferries from Split and for coastal line ferries on Rijeka – Split- Stari Grad (island Hvar) – Korcula – Sobra (island Mljet) – Dubrovnik line.

Ferries From Drvenik to Sucuraj (Hvar Island)

Sometimes it can be an alternative solution for travelers in case they miss the connection from Split, as line Split to Stari Grad ferries can sometimes be overloaded, particularly in high season (from July 15th to August 15th).

Passenger Ferries From Split To Hvar

I’m calling them passengers ferries as they aren’t for any kind of vehicle transportation, but only for foot travelers . In Croatia they are commonly called catamarans or high speed ships.

To help you figure out where catamarans leave from Split to Hvar I highly recommend you check my Split harbor map to easily find your fast ship as car ferries run from different harbor terminal.

Good news from Jadrolinija: Jadrolinija’s ferries are without a doubt the cheapest and most effective way to travel the Adriatic, and from this year you can book tickets online (but only for foot passenger catamaran lines, and not for Split to Hvar car ferries).

There are several catamarans connecting Split with Hvar island destinations:

Split to Hvar catamaran timetable (summer schedule)

• Line 9603a – Split – Milna (Brac island) – Hvar town
• Line 9604 – Split – Hvar town (proceed to Korcula and Lastovo islands.
• Line 9608 – Split – Hvar (proceeding to Korcula island)

Split to Jelsa town (summer schedule)

• Line 9603 – Split to Bol (Brac) proceeding to Jelsa (Hvar island)

There are two companies running on these routes to Hvar island: the state company Jadrolinija , and private company Kapetan Luka .

Passenger high-speed ferry service from Split airport & town

Another company called Adriatic Fast Ferries operating on SplitExpress.com entered the market recently. They offer a high-speed ferry service between Split airport or Split town to Bol (Brac island) and Stari Grad .

This service is only available in summer: June 1st until September 15th. If you’re arriving to Split by air then this service can easily take you to aforementioned nearby destinations. Their ferry port is located only 500 meters from Split airport .

Ferry timetable for low season

Every year Jadrolinija (state ferry company) introduces a new winter timetable for ferries from Split to Hvar , Brac , and Vis islands.

Split to Stari Grad (Hvar Island) is one of the most popular ferry connections. This connection is reduced from seven to three ferry trips daily.

If you are arriving from Dubrovnik by car and planning to reach Hvar island from Drvenik to Sucuraj (Hvar island), number of ferry lines will be reduced from eleven summer lines to six daily crossings.

Some early morning ferry lines (at 05:00 and 05:30 AM) will be substituted with 06:30 departure from Sucuraj to mainland (Drvenik) and with ferry that leaves at 08:00 from Drvenik to Sucuraj.

How to Travel From Split to Hvar

After you’ve wondered at the Byzantine churches and UNESCO-tagged Roman temples of old Split, be sure to turn your attention to the gorgeous Dalmatian Islands. The most popular among them has to be Hvar. It’s the sunniest spot in Croatia, boasting one of the nightlife hubs of the Adriatic Sea and a backcountry of ancient farms and fragrant lavender fields. What’s not to like?

Crossing the 20 miles of sea between Split and Hvar is simple during the spring, summer, and autumn months when regular ferries and taxi boats go from morning until night. Let’s take a closer look at all those…

Split to Hvar by High-speed Ferry

Time – 55 minutes Price – $22 Comfort – 4/5

The fastest way to swap the Roman ruins of Split for the glistening pebble coves and lavender fields of Hvar is to take the high-speed ferry. These are run by just one company: TP Line. They take under an hour – around 55 minutes – to go from port to port, usually leaving up to four times per day. Though the frequency of services depends on the season (there are more in the summer, fewer in spring and autumn, and none throughout the winter).

The fast ferries are the only mode of transport listed here that can take you from Split Ferry Port to the harbor in Hvar Town in under an hour.

TP Line operates a fleet of fast catamaran ferries with a single large indoor deck space. Provided the weather isn’t too bad, they are comfy enough. The onboard seating is arranged in rows of three or four. The whole space boasts air conditioning, dedicated toilets for passengers, and even small refreshment bars that sell non-alcoholic beverages and basic snacks. Perhaps the major downside is that these boats can be affected by storms in the Adriatic. They can be a bit wobbly if there are big swells, and might even be canceled at the last moment if the weather’s really bad.

That’s rarely a problem in the still, shimmering Croatian seas throughout midsummer, though. More likely to be an issue is the rush for tickets over to Hvar when the peak vacation months hit southern Europe. That’s why we usually recommend pre-booking tickets on this route at least 90 days prior to travel, especially if you want to go anytime between June and August. Expect to pay a standard $22 per person, each way.

Split to Hvar by Normal Ferry

Time – 1h05 Price – $20 Comfort – 4/5

Jadrolinija runs another, ever-so-slightly-slower ferry service that goes between Split and Hvar a few times per day. There are usually two departures in the morning. The first leaves Split Ferry Port at 9.30am. The second leaves at 11.30am. A total journey time of 65 minutes means arrivals at 10.35am and 12.35pm respectively. Both get you onto the marble flagstones of the docks in Hvar Town in time for a lunch of oysters and champagne in one of the glitzy bars that dot the quays. During the summer months, there are extra departures later in the afternoon and even in the evening.

But why would you ever take the Jadrolinija ferries when there’s a faster option on the menu? A few reasons, most of them connected to the  type  of boat you travel on. Jadrolinija operates much larger, ship-style ferries that hold way more passengers than the smaller catamarans run by TP Line. The extra capacity means these are less likely to sell out for travel in the peak summer months between June and August. 

Don’t discount the slower ferries just because they’re slower – on the plus side, they’re cheaper, roomier, and more reliable in bad weather.

A bigger sized boat also means you get more space to relax on board. There are both indoor and outdoor decks on the Jadrolinija vessels. The former are air-conditioned and even come with refreshment kiosks where you can purchase drinks and snacks. The latter is perfect for feeling the salty Adriatic breeze on your face and watching the isles of Brac and Solta roll by. Finally, large boats aren’t so susceptible to cancellations and whatnot in adverse weather conditions, so you might find that these are the only public boats running if there’s been a storm in the region.

Jadrolinija asks that all passengers make it to the port at least 30 minutes prior to boarding. They also impose a 20kg limit on luggage per person. The nigh-on ridiculous price tag for a taxi boat over to Hvar from Split means that 99% of travelers will stick to the public ferry services. But if there’s been a recent lottery win in the family, you might want to consider this deluxe transfer option. It will set you back nearly $600 but means an on-demand ride across the Adriatic at your beck and call. Trips can be booked to include a collection at Split Airport or the main Split Ferry Port. Most will terminate at the vibrant harbor in Hvar Town, but you can also arrange for a drop-off at other docks in Hvar – just be sure to query that before you reserve.

You’ll be traveling on a small but very speedy vessel. They’re usually little more than a high-speed skiff or RIB boat, capable of seating 4-6 passengers plus a pilot. Travel times are about the same as the ferries but the trip promises to be an experience in itself, seeing you whizz at velocity across the sparkling sea waters between the sun-splashed Dalmatian Islands. It’s the option to go for if you want to feel like an A-lister! Taxi boats can now be booked online for both summer and winter seasons using 12Go .

Thousands of travelers hop from the mainland city of Split to the good-time island of Hvar each year. The vast majority come in the warmer season that runs from May to September, to swim in azure coves, cycle the pine-studded backcountry, and party the night away in Hvar Town, the hedonistic hub of the Dalmatian archipelago.

Best Ways to Get from Split to Hvar

Your vacation in Croatia won’t be complete without a visit to Hvar Island. For many, this gorgeous island is the ultimate summer dream – with dazzling beaches and coves, white-washed towns, cobbled trees, and scenic rolling hills you could usually just see in postcards. Most tourists go through Split to reach Hvar Island. To help you, here’s a guide on the best ways to get from Split to Hvar.

Hvar is one of the best places to visit in Croatia . It lies in the Adriatic Sea and can be found between Brac, Vis, and Korcula.

The easiest way to reach it is by flying to either Dubrovnik or Split. From there, you need to take a ferry to Hvar Island. Ferries and other boat services are the only ways to reach the island.

1. Ferry from Split to Hvar

Ferry service is the easiest and most convenient way to get from Split to Hvar.

From the Port of Split, you can head to one of the four ferry ports in Hvar Island: Hvar Town , Stari Grad , Jelsa , and Sucuraj . The journey takes 1-2 hours depending on your port destination.

During summer season (June to September), ferries and catamarans run this route 18 times a day. In low season, there are more limited trips: 2-3 times per day.

There are 2 ferry companies plying the Split to Hvar route: Jadrolinija and Krilo (Kapetan Luka).

Here’s an updated timetable for the ferries. Note that times are subject to change.

Tickets for the Split to Hvar ferry can be purchased directly at Jadrolinija and Krilo websites or other booking services.

You can also buy them in Split. There are ticket booths at the Port of Split and also at the tourism center in Riva.

If visiting during summer, it’s recommended to purchase your tickets at least 24 hours in advance.

A local flight is also available for those who prefer a more comfortable transfer from Split to Hvar. This is a more expensive option, so if you’re on a budget, it’s best to go via ferry instead.

Split Express is the airline that plies the Split to Hvar route. It operates on summer months, from June 1 to September 15.

For those on a cross-country road trip, it’s possible to take your car to Hvar Island.

Jadrolinija runs a daily ferry service (No. 635) from the Port of Split to Stari Grad. During summer, there are seven trips per day and during low-peak season, four. The journey takes 2 hours and the cost is about 310 KN per car.

This is ideal for those who are coming from other countries in Europe such as Italy. Check the timetable above.

The same ferry line also offers an alternative route from Drvenik to Sucuraj, which is on the eastern part of Hvar Island. This ferry route also runs daily with increasing trips going toward summer. Journey takes about 35 minutes.

The Port of Split is located southwest of the town’s center. You can easily find it in Google Maps.

From the Split Airport, the easiest way to get to the port is by taking a Croatia Airlines bus, which runs regularly every day. Travel only takes 30 minutes and costs 30 KN per person.

For those arriving from inter- or intra-country trips, the port is conveniently located next to the bus station and train station.

There are many things you can do in Hvar Island . You can easily spend weeks here to explore the town attractions or island hop to nearby islands. Here are some recommended activities:

• Visit the beaches . Hvar features stunning beaches where you can sunbathe or feel the coolness of the Adriatic Sea. These beaches are also lined with beach bars and clubs, so you can enjoy the view with a cocktail in hand or party until sunrise. Some of the best beaches you can visit are Dubovica Beach, Pokonji Dol, and Bonj Beach.

Floating in the clear Adriatic near an uninhabited island off Croatia’s coast, I marveled as the sea changed hues from deep blue to turquoise and emerald as it reached the rocky shore. Our daily swimming stops quickly became my favorite part of the cruise, although I also loved arriving at different cities where we could just walk into the town or along the promenade that seemed to be a feature of each harbor. My contemplation of the Adriatic’s color was interrupted by laughter as one of my fellow cruisers gamely struggled once again to stand on his paddleboard, wobbled, and splashed into the sea.

Every morning aboard MV Memories , the captain found a secluded cove for the perfect swim; the Adriatic was cool enough to refresh without feeling chilly for more than the first few seconds. This delightful routine led to our three-course lunch, afternoon cruise time, and arrival at the next port. In some cities, there was a walking tour before we had the late afternoon and evening on our own for exploring and dinner.

Thirty-eight strangers quickly became friends as we mingled at breakfast and lunch tables, learning our fellow travelers’ names and where they were from. We were blessed with sunny, warm weather every day, so afternoons could be spent sunbathing on the upper deck, reading a book, napping on a cushioned lounge, or enjoying a cold gin and tonic in the shade (my choice most days). Arriving at a new city each day was exciting, as medieval towers, ancient city walls, and historic buildings greeted us. Walking tours provided background and an introduction to most of the cities, and then we were on our own for dinner and the evening. How cool it was to stay out late and then just walk back to the waiting ship for the night.

MV Memories instantly became a comfortable and welcoming home-away-from-home for the week, whether in our well-appointed cabin, on the sun deck, or relaxing in a shaded lounge chair. "The vessels we operate were built in 2021, and we’re proud to have the youngest fleet of ships in Croatia. This really enhances the cruising experience for guests as the staterooms they rest their heads in, the dining areas they eat in, and the expansive lounge and sundeck areas around the ship all feel new and modern, like a luxury boutique hotel," Graham Carter, chief commercial officer at Unforgettable Travel Company, told Travel + Leisure.

"Unforgettable specializes in balcony ships, and most of our vessels have upper deck cabins with private balconies, so our guests can relax and watch the islands go by from the comfort of their balcony," Carter added. "We also operate the longest vessels in Croatia, which stand at 170 feet, compared to most vessels in Croatia, which are around 150 feet. This additional space means our cabins are slightly larger than most.”

Carter pointed out another advantage of the ship’s size: "The benefit of exploring the Croatian coast on a small vessel like ours is the ability to get into smaller hidden destinations off limits to bigger ships or even yachts. As our vessels are all registered in Croatia, we can dock directly in smaller ports overnight, giving our guests the ability to enjoy excursions and dinner on shore each evening without the rush of having to get back to the ship before it leaves."

Every detail during the week felt both luxurious and comfortably casual at the same time. Each day offered surprises — like an unexpected pizza party one late afternoon — along with what quickly became familiar. Alex and Vlada, our hosts, made everyone feel welcome and pampered, and, like the other guests, felt like old friends by the end of the cruise — which came way too soon. I wholeheartedly agree with Carter’s comment: “We find that guests board as complete strangers, and by the captain’s dinner at the end of the week, it’s like a happy family where everyone knows one another, and they’re swapping phone numbers on the last day.”

MV Memories

• All 19 cabins feature spacious storage, terry cloth robes, showers with great water pressure, convenient charging ports, individual air conditioning controls, and either balconies (11 upper deck) or portholes (eight lower deck).
• For our daily dips in the Adriatic, the main deck platform with two ladders made it easy to dive in and climb out. There were also paddleboards, styrofoam floats, kayaks, and a jet ski for a fun ride with one of the crew.
• The breakfast buffet included fresh fruit, juices, baked goods, eggs, vegetables, meats, pancakes, and a menu offering individually prepared dishes, plus brewed coffee and delicious cappuccino from an excellent (all-day) coffee machine. 
• The two hosts who served breakfast, lunch, and our special dinners, as well as all day and evening cocktails, were excellent, and their hospitality and friendly, professional style created the perfect atmosphere.
• Our Cruise Director was personable, organized, and fun, keeping everyone informed about plans and joining our group for the walking tours and bus trips.

The 19 staterooms each measure between 161 and 183 square feet of efficiently used space. They have a desk, nightstand with two drawers, twin or full beds, spacious closet, small sofa, safe deposit box, life jackets, and a window (or porthole on the lower deck). The bathrooms have a shower, sink, hair dryer, and toilet, and each cabin has individually controlled air conditioning. Free, dependable Wi-Fi is available throughout the ship.

Nearly identical in design, the MV Bellissima and MV Memories , Unforgettable Travel’s Croatia Signature cruise ships, were launched in 2021. They feature state-of-the-art technology and modern design details. MV Memories offers one Superior VIP Deck Cabin and 10 VIP private balcony cabins. MV Bellissima features 11 VIP private balcony cabins; both ships have eight lower deck porthole cabins.

Bars & Restaurants

A buffet breakfast is served daily in the main dining room from 8 until 9:30 a.m.; coffee and tea are available from 7 a.m. There’s a daily three-course lunch with a delicious soup, salad, or risotto starter, main course, and dessert. Two dinners — the welcome dinner and captain’s dinner — are provided, and wine is offered along with meals. A full bar with a lounge area is on the main deck; on the sun deck, there’s a large bar in the shaded area. Dining is informal, with no dress code. Alex, our head bartender, hosted a wine and olive oil tasting aboard the ship one afternoon.

Amenities & Entertainment

During cruising — or anytime on the ship — guests can find lounge chairs, a jacuzzi, and shaded and sunny areas on the upper deck. The main deck features the restaurant and a covered outdoor lounge with sofas. The ships offer many places for sunbathing, quiet time, or gatherings. Board games, playing cards, and novelty games are available for guests.

From May to October, the ships cruise between Split and Dubrovnik with adults-only, seven-night cruises.

Several shore excursions took guests inland from the Adriatic coast to see more of Croatia. We traveled on plush, air-conditioned buses to Krka Waterfalls National Park, the Blue Cave on the Island of Bisevo, Mljet National Park, a winery, and an oyster farm in Ston. In addition, walking tours were offered in Split, Hvar, Old Town Korcula, and Dubrovnik. Tour guides were professional, informative, and entertaining.

To many, the southern Dalmatian coast is Croatia. Between Split and Dubrovnik lie some of the most visited places in the country. At times it can feel as if this entire part of the Dalmatian coast is just a bit too popular for its own good, with more and more tourists coming every year to Dubrovnik, Split and other honeypot destinations.

You can’t blame them. The Adriatic coast is undeniably beautiful, with the forbidding Dinaric Alps as a dramatic backdrop to the heavily indented coastline and dozens of islands scattered about. But even among the big hitters, there are lesser-known pockets.

Croatia’s second city is also the jumping-off point for ferries to Dalmatia’s islands, so expect crowds of people wheeling their suitcases around the port and old town. At times it’s hard to move within the picturesque ruins of the 2nd-century CE Diocletian’s Palace, built by the eponymous Roman emperor as his retirement home. The nearest beach, Bačvice – just east of the ferry port – is equally crowded. Instead, get some respite among the soothing greenery of Marjan, a sprawling forested park that covers an entire headland to the west of the port.

Once you’ve wandered along its wooded trails and taken in views of Split and the sea from Telegrin observation point – Marjan’s highest point at nearly 600 feet – head down to Ježinac beach below the park for a cooling swim. While you’re there, pop into the Meštrović Gallery a few minutes’ walk away to admire the work of Croatia’s greatest sculptor, Ivan Meštrović, who lived from 1883 to 1962. His lavish, self-designed summer villa, built in the 1930s to make most of the sea views, is an evocative showcase for his art. You can also see his religious art in the 16th-century church within the Crikvina complex, five minutes’ walk away.

You can easily see Šolta island from Split’s port, but for some inexplicable reason it’s often overlooked in favor of its neighbors Hvar and Brač. People are missing out on this sleepy, laid-back place and its sheltered pebbly coves tucked into its southern coast – notably the turquoise waters of Senjska, Stračinska and Školjić.

Yachties might have already come across the village of Maslinica on the western coast, with its well equipped marina and deeply indented Šešula Bay nearby. Towards the eastern end, Stomorska is equally charming – it’s also close to some of the island’s wineries that produce the indigenous and full-bodied dobričić red wine. Stop by the convivial Kaštelanac Agroturizam for a wine tasting that includes homemade seafood pâtés and tapenades. In between are miles of olive groves that produce award-winning oil from indigenous Dalmatian varietals.

The first image of Croatian beaches is usually that of Brač’s long V-shaped Zlatni Rat, whose tiny pebbles almost look like white sand. Not surprisingly, both the beach and its closest town, Bol, have become hotspots. To avoid the crowds, try some of the smaller villages along Brač’s jagged northern coast, including Pušćica, whose quarries produce the creamy Brač stone seen all over Dalmatia (and even the White House in Washington, DC). You can’t miss its handsome stonemason school, Klesarska Škola, lording it over the waterfront.

Over on the west coast, the relaxed village of Milna wraps itself around a deep harbor, while olive groves and vineyards stretch out around the surrounding countryside and offer gentle cycling. From here you can follow the dizzyingly twisting road for about 10 miles along the southern coast to reach a fascinating piece of Brač’s history, the UNESCO-listed Blaca Hermitage, built into the cliffs by 16th-century monks.

Lured by its hedonistic reputation, young tourists come flocking to Hvar Town in their droves. But there’s much more to the island than its status as Croatia’s official party spot. Away from the crowds, boat parties and nightclubs it’s a different world of lavender fields, vineyards, pine forests, farm restaurants and olive groves.

See a mellower side of Hvar in Stari Grad, which, despite being on a main ferry route, is remarkably quiet. Explore its Venetian marble lanes before setting out for walks on Stari Grad Plain, a UNESCO-listed area of olive groves and vineyards created by the Greeks in the fourth century BCE. Carry on eastwards towards some of the smaller fishing villages – Jelsa and Milna both have lovely beaches. Vrboska is another one to add to your list – its white stone houses flank a canal which flows from the long, sinuous harbor.

It’s a three-hour ferry ride from either Split or Dubrovnik, but it’s worth the effort to reach Lastovo. The entire island is a nature park, with more than 125 miles of hiking trails winding through forests and past tiny villages of terracotta-roofed stone houses. This really is the place to get away from it all and flop on pebbly beaches after a hike through the woods, filling up on grilled seafood in beachfront restaurant.

Head to the seaside village of Zaklopatica, where a lofty observation area about an eight-minute drive from the center offers far-reaching views. Park the car and hike another 400 yards or so to reach the peak of Sožanj for even higher vistas. A few smaller islands are dotted about, making Lastovo a favorite among divers and snorkelers.

Nearly as far flung as Lastovo is the island of Vis, which soared in popularity after its starring role in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.” It’s a captivating place with Venetian-style villages, including Vis Town and Komiža.

Biokovo Nature Park

While beach-lovers laze on the long coastline of the Makarska Riviera – especially in Tučepi, Baška Voda, Brela and Makarska itself – hikers and mountain bikers head straight to the rocky trails of Biokovo Nature Park . Covering about 78 square miles of the Dinaric Alps, Biokovo offers tantalizing glimpses of the sea as you make your way higher into the mountains. Hardy hikers will want to tackle the 5,780-foot peak of Sveti Jure, Croatia’s second-highest mountain. Thrills of a different sort are on offer on Skywalk Biokovo , a glass-bottomed, crescent-shaped observation deck that hovers over the cliff more than 4,000 feet above sea level.

Just north of Biokovo and worth a detour is the geographical marvel that is Omiš. Here the Cetina River slices through a series of canyons and gorges before flowing into the Adriatic, splitting the town in two. If you really want to test your nerve, fly high across the canyon on one of the eight ziplines run by Zipline Croatia .

Neretva delta

In the midst of the rugged Dinaric Alps that run alongside most of the Adriatic coast is the broad, flat, incredibly fertile landscape of the Neretva delta and valley. The same Neretva river that flows under Mostar’s celebrated stone bridge in Bosnia empties into the Adriatic between the villages of Rogotin and Blace, creating a watery world of pure serenity. Orchards, waterways, wetlands and lakes invite slow exploration by boat, on foot or on two wheels as you pass roadside stalls selling the fruit you see growing all around you. Park yourself on the wide sandy Delta Beach to watch kiteboarders skimming across the sands.

Pelješac peninsula

This long finger of land north of Dubrovnik has some of the best vineyards in Croatia, with rows and rows of vines of red plavac mali and dingač grapes. Squeezed into its coastline are dozens of pebbly coves backed by pine woods. Until 2022, reaching it from the north meant crossing into Bosnia, whose 12.4 miles of coastline sits below the Neretva delta, before giving way once more to Croatia’s southern Dalmatian coast. But in 2022, the Pelješac Bridge was opened, connecting the peninsula to the Croatian mainland north of Bosnia – meaning you can reach the rest of southern Dalmatia without having to pass through border checks.

From Pelješac you can make a short trip to Korčula – the famous island hovers just off the peninsula – via the ferry at Orebić, in the northern part of the peninsula. Similarly, the lusciously green island of Mljet is easily reached from the small port at Prapratno further south. Before you leave Pelješac, you’ll want to visit two of the peninsula’s most famous sights: the oyster beds of Mali Ston and the hulking stone walls that have been circling the village of Ston since the 14th century.

Elaphiti islands

Wander along Dubrovnik’s old port and in seconds you’ll be offered a day trip to the Elaphiti islands, north of the city. While a day is enough to visit all three of the inhabited islands – Koločep, Lopud and Šipan – it’s more satisfying to pick one and spend a few days reveling in peace once the daytrippers have gone. Šipan, the largest, is the only one to allow cars, but there’s a seductive feel to it. There’s little to do but wander through olive groves (which cover much of the island), swim in pebbly beaches and devour freshly grilled fish. Which makes it pretty much the essence of summertime Dalmatian life.

Dubrovnik region

Anyone who has ever been in Dubrovnik’s old town during the summer won’t be surprised to hear that it’s Croatia’s most visited place. The crowds can be unbearable, and many travelers prefer to base themselves in the villages along this last stretch of the country’s coastline – there’s a good bus network to get around. Cavtat, about 15 miles south of Dubrovnik, has been steadily growing in popularity as an alternative to the city. Or look north of Dubrovnik – Slano, a 40-minute drive away, is also convenient for visits to the Trsteno Arboretum when you’re not relaxing in the calm waters of the pine-fringed bay.
