The Tortuga Promise

At Tortuga, our mission is to make travel easier. Our advice and recommendations are based on years of travel experience. We only recommend products that we use on our own travels.

Table of Contents

The best travel soaps are multi-use, concentrated, and TSA friendly.

Travel soap – although it’s not something that often comes up in conversation when we’re travel-planning, we all use it. Whether we’re  packing for a safari  trip in Africa,  train travel in Europe , a  Peruvian journey  into the rainforest, a  Southeast Asian expedition , an  Australian Outback  tour, or  beach vacation , we rarely leave home without it. Because the amount of liquid we can fly with is limited, so are our soap choices. Since we value packing light, we’re always looking for ways the items we pack can do double duty. Soap is no exception.

Whether your soap preferences are liquid, bar, multi-use, eco-friendly, scented, unscented, or something entirely different, finding a version that travels well is important. If you’re like me, you consider how and where things are made, the environmental footprint we’re leaving, and the treatment of our animal friends in testing. And then there are those of us with allergies and sensitivities, doing our best to keep our skin happy at home and on the go. There are a lot of options for travel soap, but some products are definitely better than others.

Below are our picks for the best travel soaps – from bar to liquid to, yes, even those that do double duty as a detergent – and containers to pack them in.

How to Choose the Best Soaps for Travel

I always knew there was a difference in scented and unscented soaps, but I had no idea there were so many different travel soap options. The range stretches from soaps that keep us clean or act as laundry detergent to shampoo, dish soap, and the multitaskers that do all of those things at once!

In today’s world, we check labels on the food we consume and the products we purchase. We’re thoughtful of the bigger picture, knowledgeable about the origin of things, and ethically conscious of carbon footprints. We intentionally allow our concern for humanity and the planet to affect our purchasing power. When choosing travel soap, look for:

  • Multi-use products
  • Organic, natural products
  • Products free of fragrances, dyes, parabens and preservatives
  • Essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances
  • Fair trade products
  • Biodegradable
  • Eco-friendly options
  • Anti-bacterial elements
  • Baby-mild/hypoallergenic
  • Concentrated soaps

When we travel, we’re careful in our choice of locations, tours, and even luggage . A  travel backpack  allows us to carry everything we need on our own two shoulders and under the seat in front of us. Why wouldn’t we choose travel soaps by the same criteria of portability and packability?

The Best Overall Travel Soap

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is bronners.jpg

The best overall soap for travel is Dr. Bronner’s  magic soap. It consistently gets rave reviews from experienced travelers, including the members of Team Tortuga.

This multi-purpose, vegetable-based Castile soap can act as shampoo, soap, deodorant, and shaving cream, laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, insect repellent, and more. Some people even swear by it as toothpaste. It tastes kind of gross.

Multi-use, available in both bar and liquid, concentrated, biodegradable, available world-wide, scented and unscented, fair trade, 100% organic, and not tested on animals; that’s hard to beat.

You can’t go wrong with this magic potion in a bottle or a bar. Buy the big one and take it in a GoToob, or buy it perfectly packaged to fly in a travel-size.

Concentrated & Biodegradable Travel Soaps

These eco-friendly options mean you use less and the soaps breakdown naturally, although they may still contaminate water supplies.

  • Campsuds : available in citronella, lavender and peppermint oil, this soap doubles as insect repellent.
  • Sea to Summit Trek and Travel Liquid Soap : concentrated, biodegradable, and paraben-free, this liquid soap works well for urban and outdoor adventures alike.
  • Lush concentrated soaps : this solid soap is vegan and unpackaged for eco-friendly measures, but also ultra-concentrated–so you get a lot of washes with just a little.

Best travel soap for kids

Hypoallergenic & Child Friendly Travel Soaps

If you’ve got allergies, sensitive skin, or are traveling with a child, you might need to use a  GoToob  to take a small amount of your favorite soap. Try these:

  • Dove Beauty Bar or liquid soap is hypoallergenic and widely available.
  • Neutrogena transparent facial bar is great for people with sensitive skin.
  • Babyganics is great for kids and babies.

The Best Travel Laundry Detergents

Your body isn’t the only thing you need soap to clean while traveling. To wash your clothes on the go, these are the best travel detergents:

  • Laundry soap sheets (Travelon) : Great for hand-washing clothes in your hotel sink, these sheets rehydrate into soap with a bit of water. Since they’re sheets, they’re TSA-compliant, and super compact.
  • Sea to Summit Pocket Laundry Wash : Simply add water to one of these sheets to use as a liquid soap on your laundry.
  • Well Earth Sheets : These laundry detergent sheets come in a compostable package, perfect for zero-waste travel.
  • The Laundress Wash and Stain Bar : The Laundress specializes in soaps for different kinds of clothing, so it’s no surprise that they have a super-portable bar of soap you can use to wash clothes. Since it’s not liquid, it’s TSA-compliant.

Best all in one travel soap

The Best All-in-One Travel Soap Options

All-in-one travel soaps will do it all: hair, body, and face. They even work as travel laundry detergent in a pinch. While our favorite all-in-one travel soap is Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Soap , these are also great options:

  • Jack Black All-Over Wash : This liquid soap works as a face and body wash, as well as a shampoo.
  • Sea to Summit’s Wilderness Wash : this super-concentrated, all-purpose soap works as a body wash, shampoo, and even for washing clothes and dishes. It’s also biodegradable and safe to use outdoors.

The Best Travel Soap Sheets

For an ultra compact soap option that’s not subject to TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, try a travel soap sheet. Soap sheets rehydrate when wet to create suds to clean yourself with.

  • Soap Leaves (Lifeventure) : At roughly the size of a packet of floss, these little soap leaves pack about 50 washes in each container.
  • Buly 1803 : These compact, orange scented soap sheets suds into a full wash’s worth of body and face soap with just a bit of water.

Best travel shampoo

Waterless Shampoos & Shampoo Bars

Perhaps you’ve encountered the aerosol “dry shampoo,” but have you seen the no-rinse shampoo that’s a liquid (carry on sized, of course, that requires no water whatsoever? Just apply, lather, and towel dry. Yep. Really.

  • No Rinse Shampoo : For when you don’t have any water, use this no-rinse, no-water shampoo to clean your hair on the go.
  • Lush Shampoo and Conditioner Bars : Bar isn’t only for bodies. Lush’s shampoo and conditioner bars are like bar soap, for your hair. Like bar soap, they’re great for travel since they aren’t subject to TSA’s 3-1-1 rule.

Travel soap container

Best Liquid and Bar Soap Travel Containers

The best travel soap containers will be TSA compliant (for liquid soap) and leak-proof. For bar soap, they’ll ideally also provide a way for soap to dry, rather than sitting in a puddly mess.

Matador FlatPack Soap Bar Case ($13)

This fabric bar soap container is great for travel because it’s ultralight, compact, and won’t get crushed in your bag like a cheap plastic one. It’s also at once leak-proof and breathable – so your soap will dry inside, but not leak all over the inside of your luggage .

GoToob ($7+)

These reusable, silicon travel containers are our go-to for any liquid, gel, or cream – whether it’s soap, shampoo, or sunblock. They’re easy to fill, and even easier to wash between trips. You’ll find a range of TSA-compliant sizes.

Can You Bring Soap in Your Carry On ?

Yes, you can both liquid soap and bars of soap on a plane in your carry on . If you’re traveling with liquid soap, it must follow the  3-1-1 rule and be under 3.4 ounces (100 ml). You can bring bar soap of any size through airport security.

How to Pack a Bar of Soap

When traveling with a bar of soap, don’t just toss it in your toiletry bag. Invest in a reusable container like Matador’s FlatPack Soap Bar Case ($13) to keep it from getting all over your other items. Before you pack it, wipe it down with a towel to avoid any excess moisture in your case. When showering, rest it in a dry spot to help it last longer.

Packing Tips for Travel Soaps

  • Squeeze some of your larger liquid soap into TSA approved containers that are 3.4 ounces or smaller, like those by GoToob .
  • Pack concentrated soaps into contact lens cases.
  • Break down your favorite soap bars into smaller sizes to turn that bar soap into a travel-friendly size.
  • Adopt a multi-use soap, like Dr. Bronner’s , for all of your travel needs.
  • For those with sensitive skin, test a new soap at home prior to travel. Baby products are often a good choice for sensitive skin
  • Check products for allergens (for example coconut oil, argan oil, or other nut based).
  • Dr.Bronner’s is the best multi-purpose travel soap for body, laundry, and hair.
  • Consider switching to bar soaps to make room for in your liquids bag.
  • Use GoToob and Matador travel soap to pack your travel soaps.
  • When choosing a travel soap, look for a multi-use product that can double for hair and body, or even laundry.
  • Take your skin sensitivities into consideration and always test new soaps at home, before you travel.

From bars to gels and from beeswax to glycerine, hand soaps come in more shapes and sizes than ever. But if you’re travelling, your soap requirements will be more specific than a bog-standard bathroom soap. The best hand travel soaps combine high-quality ingredients, antibacterial properties, convenient size and a great smell. They should last at least the duration of your trip too. Based on these criteria, we’ve selected ten of our favourite hand soaps for travellers.

Aesop’s Resurrection rinse-free handwash

Leave it to Aesop to produce the perfect, pocket-sized product for keeping hands clean when water isn’t readily available. Rinse-free and alcohol-based, this hand wash effectively cleanses hands and combats contagions, without drying them out. The wash is available in 500 ml or a more convenient 50 ml bottle, which can be squeezed directly onto dry hands. Unlike other alcohol-based washes, it doesn’t smell like chemicals — in fact, its citrus and herbaceous scent smells delicious. It’s sustainable and cruelty-free too.

All products are free from plastics and the packaging is made of recyclable paper. Small, light and compact, you’ll be able to take this in your carry-on luggage too. Purveyors of posh soap Michel Design Works are famous for combining natural fragrances with beautiful designs. This handy foaming soap measures just 12.7 cm by 3.6 cm, making it the perfect companion for flights, train and bus journeys. This particular variety has a sophisticated earl grey scent with hints of bergamot and lemon, so you could even use it in place of your usual perfume. All soaps are formulated with shea butter and aloe vera to gently cleanse and leave hands moisturised and well-nourished.

Pears Transparent Amber Soap

Pears is a household name, having produced its iconic transparent soaps for more than 200 years. Cheap, moisturizing and travel-size, it’s still a hard-to-beat offering. Each bar is made with natural oils and filtered by eye for purity to create a gentle soap. The addition of glycerin makes it an excellent choice for those with delicate skin or who will need to wash their hands more frequently. • Why Trust T+L

Travel & Leisure / Kristin Kempa

Anyone who’s adventure-bound — whether headed on a weekend camping excursion or a month-long beach stay — will need to make smart and strategic packing decisions, especially when it comes to toiletries. The best travel toiletries are portable, multi-functioning, and convenient, to help you maintain an effective grooming routine with fewer, smaller items than what you’re used to using at home.

From compact skincare products to versatile hygiene essentials, we’ve culled the best travel toiletries in every category. And, keeping the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule for liquids in your carry-on luggage in mind, we’ve swapped some traditionally liquid items for solid alternatives to make packing even easier.

Best Face Wash

Evolvetogether face wash.

It’s lightweight, convenient, and sustainable.

It may not be as effective at removing makeup as other solutions.

Whether you’re trying to cut down on liquid toiletries for your carry-on luggage or you’re just trying to avoid potential spills in your bag, non-liquid products are very convenient for travel. This tried-and-true powder face wash comes in 100 percent biodegradable individual-use packets, so it’s easy to pack the exact amount you need for your trip.

Plus, they’re slimmer and more lightweight than even a miniature bottle of liquid. The water-activated unscented face wash turns into a foam with an ultra-fine sandy texture that cleanses, exfoliates, and moisturizes your skin.

The Details: 30 packets, 2 x 3.5 inches each

Best Face Moisturizer

Elizabeth arden eight hour cream.

It delivers long-lasting hydration in a travel-friendly tube.

Some skin types may be sensitive to salicylic acid.

Between the dry air in plane cabins and climate changes in a new environment, traveling can be taxing on your skin. This small but mighty tube of petroleum-based face cream delivers eight hours of hydration to help keep your skin soothed, dewy, and moisturized. Meanwhile, it’s formulated with vitamin E to repair damage caused to the skin barrier and salicylic acid to promote gentle cell turnover for healthier, smoother-looking skin. A bonus: this purse-friendly product doubles as a balm for cracked and chapped lips.

The Details: 1.7 ounces

Best Lotion

La roche-posay lipikar ap+m triple repair body cream.

The multi-tasking formula eliminates the need for multiple creams.

Be sure to layer SPF on top.

When you travel, multi-tasking products are your best friend as they allow you to lug fewer items overall. That’s why we love this prebiotic moisturizer, which can be used on your body, hands, and face. It’s packed with a combination of shea butter, glycerin, and niacinamide to replenish lost moisture and soothe dry skin. The non-greasy, non-sticky formula is non-comedogenic and safe for sensitive skin.

The Details: 2.5, 6.8, or 13.52 ounces

Best Body Wash

Glossier milky jelly cleansing bar.

It won’t count against the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule for carry-ons.

It’s pricey.

Another convenient multi-tasker, this nourishing cleansing bar can be used both on your body and face. And feel free to toss this ergonomically-designed soap bar in your carry-on luggage since it won’t count against the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule. The fragrance-free vegan cleanser is safe to use on sensitive skin, and it’ll leave your epidermis feeling hydrated and never stripped. It uses chamomile extract to help balance and even your complexion.

The Details: 3.85 ounces

Best Face Sunscreen

Summer fridays shadedrops.

It’s enriched with vitamins, antioxidants, and soothing chamomile.

If you’re prone to sunburns, you may prefer a higher SPF value.

Whether you’re headed beachside or hitting the ski slopes, dermatologists agree it’s imperative to protect your skin from the sun with SPF 30 or higher whenever you’re spending time outdoors. This sunscreen is formulated like a lightweight serum, so it has none of that greasy, sticky feeling of traditional sunscreen, nor will it leave a white cast on your skin. It’s formulated with zinc oxide (which is safe for sensitive skin), smoothing and plumping squalane, and a vitamin E-based antioxidant complex that helps protect skin against free-radical damage.

Best Body Sunscreen

Babo botanicals sheer mineral sunscreen lotion spf 50.

It has a comfortable, lightweight formula.

There is a faint mineral smell.

When we tested 20 different travel-sized sunscreens , this nourishing, non-greasy SPF 50 formula stood out above the rest. We particularly loved the lightweight, liquid formula, which felt more like a lotion than a sunscreen and was not as heavy or sticky as old-school sunblock tends to be.

Plus, we were able to get plenty of use out of just a small dollop of the zinc oxide-based product, making the 3-ounce a better value for the price. It offers 80 minutes of water-resistance, so it’s a great pick for beach or pool trips. Plant-based ingredients including shea butter help moisturize and soothe skin.

The Details: 3 ounces

Best Shampoo

J.r. liggett's all-natural shampoo bar.

The long-lasting bar is equal to approximately 24 ounces of liquid shampoo.

The rose, lavender, and spearmint scent may not be for everyone.

Not only are shampoo bars more environmentally friendly (due to lack of plastic packaging) and more cost-effective (since you typically get more washes out of a bar than a bottle) than their liquid counterparts, but they’re also a mess-free, TSA-friendly option for travel.

We especially love this all-natural pick because it can also be used as a body soap, a lubricant for shaving, or for hand washing clothing items such as socks and underwear. The 100 percent vegetable oil formulation doesn’t strip the natural oils from your hair and naturally conditions it, so many people find they don’t need to use an additional conditioner after shampooing (and can therefore pack one less item).

The Details: 3.5 ounces

Best Conditioner

Pureology hydrate conditioner.

It softens and moisturizes hair while controlling frizz.

It's expensive.

When subjecting your hair to new environments while traveling, it can easily get dried out. This creamy and luxurious conditioner deeply softens and nourishes stressed hair and works to restore moisture. It’s formulated with moisturizing jojoba, health-promoting green tea, and sage, which supports hair follicles. Just a small amount of this color-safe conditioner goes a long way, making it an effective choice for travel (and it helps to balance out the hefty price tag).

The Details: 1.7, 9, and 33.8 ounces

Best Hair Serum

Christophe robin regenerating serum.

This all-in-one hair serum hydrates dry hair and protects against heat damage.

Be sure to travel with the lid so the press pump doesn't get bumped accidentally.

This regenerating serum is the only hair care item you'll need to pack in your toiletry bag (besides shampoo and conditioner, of course). It's designed to hydrate and replenish dry hair while acting as a heat protectant for up to 440 degrees Fahrenheit. The main ingredients all have specific purposes, too, including strengthening prickly pear seed oil, nourishing tucuma butter, and castor oil to provide a healthy shine that won't leave your hair looking or feeling greasy. You only need to use a small amount so the tiny bottle takes up very little room and lasts a long time.

Best Hair Brush

Putysuun travel comb brush combo.

This compact item includes two styling tools in one.

It may feel a bit flimsy.

A hair brush can be a tricky item to pack due to its awkward shape and bristles, which can get caught on and damage vulnerable items such as knit sweaters. This combination tool includes a hair brush and a fine toothed comb in one, so you can address all your hair styling needs with a single item. The best part is that it folds up into a compact tool that won’t risk snagging other items in your luggage. When folded, it becomes a pocket-friendly size that’s easy to stash.

Best Hairspray

Sexyhair spray & play volumizing hairspray.

It protects hairstyles against humidity.

It can make your hair feel a little crunchy.

When you’re traveling, it’s impractical to pack various hairsprays, gels, and styling creams for a variety of hairstyles. Instead, rely on a single product which has numerous uses. This small but mighty hairspray has plenty of hold to keep your tresses securely in place no matter your activity.

The volumizing spray provides fullness, lift, hold, and shine, and it’s suitable for use on all hair types. If you’re headed to a hot or humid location, rest assured that the product’s humidity protection will help keep your strands from frizzing for up to 72 hours.

The Details: 1.5, 10, or 16 ounces

Best Hand Sanitizer

Touchland power mist hand sanitizer.

It’s formulated with moisturizing aloe vera.

The scents are strong.

Whether you’re boarding a long-haul flight or trekking through terrain where you won’t encounter a sink for quite a while, hand sanitizer will help keep your hands clean. This flat container is extra convenient because it slides nicely into a pant or purse pocket — or you can clip it to a key ring or lanyard. The aloe vera-based formula is moisturizing, and each bottle contains 500 sprays. Choose from delicious scents like lemon-lime spritz, frosted mint, and citrus grove.

The Details: 1 ounce

Best Travel Razor

Gillette venus comfortglide white tea blades.

It comes with a travel case for safe packing.

The short handle may be tougher to maneuver than a larger one.

With a mini handle and a nifty travel case, this razor is easy and safe to toss in your toiletry bag and won’t take up too much space. The pivoting head gets into tough-to-reach areas for a smooth, close shave. The three-blade razor is surrounded by water-activated gel bars that release a rich body butter lather, guarding your skin against nicks, cuts, and irritation as you shave — and eliminating the need for an additional shaving cream.

Best Mini Deodorant

Lume whole body deodorant.

It can also be used on your feet, thighs, and anywhere else you sweat.

The roll up mechanism can stick and become defective.

When you’re traveling, it’s helpful to pack multi-functioning products that allow you to tote fewer items overall. This full-body antiperspirant helps keep your pits, feet, and any other area where you tend to sweat feeling and smelling fresh for up to 72 hours. Powerful yet gentle, the aluminum-, paraben-, and baking soda-free formula is safe for sensitive skin.

The Details: 2.2 ounces

Best Travel First Aid Kit

Protect life small first aid kit.

It helps ease the stress of mini emergencies.

 It doesn’t include pain medication.

It’s always a good idea to carry first aid essentials in case of small emergencies like scrapes or splinters. Don’t let the small size of this health kit fool you: it contains 100 pieces, including numerous bandages, gauze pads, an emergency blanket, a CPR mask, tweezers, a tape roll, and more. Pack the 7.5 x 5.2 x 1.5-inch container in your backpack or purse to address minor injuries on the go without having to stop at the drugstore.

Best Travel Toiletry Containers

Liquisnugs premium silicone travel bottles.

The TSA-approved bottles come in two different sizes.

You may need to purchase multiple sets to accommodate all your travel liquids.

Some of your favorite toiletries may not be available in travel-friendly sizes. That’s where these nifty refillable containers come in. Available in 2- and 3-ounce sizes (use the larger containers for liquids you use more frequently), the silicone bottles are super simple to fill with your lotions, body washes, shampoos, and more thanks to a larger opening at the top. In our testing , each individual bottle held up well and there wasn’t any spillage or damage after we tossed, turned, and dropped them in our simulations.

The Details: 2 and 3 ounces

Best Toothbrush

Kulusion dental travel kit.

It holds your toothpaste, too.

It’ll count as a liquid if you fill it with toothpaste.

Here’s another useful tool that can replace multiple items. This travel-sized toothbrush comes with a built-in, refillable toothpaste container, which easily releases your preferred toothpaste with the touch of a button. When shut, the contraption keeps the soft toothbrush head clean and protected.

Best Bug Spray

Off family care insect repellent ii with picaridin.

It doesn’t have any off-putting chemical smells.

It doesn’t come in a container larger than 4 ounces.

When T+L put 16 different bug sprays to the test , this OFF! pick rose to the top of our list. What we love: the highly effective 5 percent picaridin formula has a very light scent and doesn't feel sticky at all, you may even forget you have it on. Plus, the non-leak bottle is easy to use and it disperses a fine, even mist onto skin. The 2.5-ounce size can be tossed in your carry-on luggage or it can fit in your pocket for day trips.

The Details: 2.5 and 4 ounces

Best Dry Shampoo

Living proof perfect hair day dry shampoo.

Your hair will smell fresh and clean in between washes.

It’s not cheap.

The less time you spend shampooing your hair on vacation, the more time you’ll get back to enjoy your trip. On days between hair washes, you can use a dry shampoo to freshen up your tresses and say goodbye to greasy strands. Living Proof’s cult favorite version goes a step further by actually cleansing your hair, so it looks, feels, and is clean. The fragrance is nice and not overtly floral or chemical.

The Details: 1.8, 5.5, or 9.5 ounces

Tips for Buying Travel Toiletries

Know which items you truly need.

When you pack for a trip, know you won’t necessarily need to have all the comforts of home with you. Prioritize your daily essentials including toothpaste, soap, and deodorant. Consider which items you’ll realistically use, and which ones you can do without (for instance, you may want hairspray for a trip to Paris but not for a camping excursion). If you’re staying at a hotel, think about items you may not be picky about (such as shampoo and body wash) that may be provided by the facility free of charge.

Invest in reusable containers

You may find miniature versions of your favorite products adorable to look at, but they’re not the most sustainable or cost-effective option. Plus, your favorite brands may not even have travel-size picks available. Consider investing in reusable containers in TSA-friendly sizes. That way, you can fill them with the full-sized toiletries you already buy and you can take just as much as you need for the length of your trip.

Use a clear, ziplock bag to store your liquids and prevent leaks. This also makes it easier to see what you have and comply with airport security regulations. Try to stock up on multi-tasking products (for instance, a lotion that can be used both on your face and body) so you’ll have to pack fewer items. Use reusable travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces or less for any larger items that you want to pack in a carry-on.

Pay attention to TSA travel restrictions and make sure all your carry-on items comply with the official 3-1-1 liquids rule , which states that you can bring containers equal to or smaller than 3.4 ounces that fit in a single quart-size resealable bag. When possible, try subbing in solid alternatives to liquid toiletries (for example, a bar of soap over a liquid body wash), which are not subject to liquid restrictions and take up less space.

Elegant Bars of Soap That Let You Ignore Liquid Restrictions

The humble bar of soap. It might not rate a spot on your  toiletries packing list —after all, why bring soap when hotels and vacation rentals provide it for free? But trust us, that generic freebie you find in the bathroom will suck all the moisture from your body. Bringing your own bar guarantees you'll be sudsing up in something agreeable to your skin—and the planet.

The Main Travel Perks to Bar Soap

The airport’s 3-1-1 rule allows for 3.4 ounces max per liquid item, all contained in a one-quart clear bag—and only one bag per person. Packing bar soap frees up that valuable space. If you’re still not convinced, consider these facts: You use 30% less water when you wash with bar soap instead of liquid soap. Liquid soap has 10 times the carbon footprint of bar soap because of its chemical ingredients and wasteful plastic packaging. On top of everything, bar soap generally lasts a heck of a lot longer than liquid soap. Now that you’re on the bar soap bandwagon, here are some tips for traveling with bar soap and a few of our favorites.

Key Tips for Traveling With Bar Soap

  • Storage is key when traveling with bar soap. You may think to just grab a plastic bag and throw it in, but this will become a mess after your first shower. Invest in a compact bar soap travel case, like this plastic one with a wooden rack . It’s water-sealed, so no gooey soap water will spill into your stuff.
  • Make sure to rest your soap in a dry spot while you shower, not in a puddle, as your soap will last longer and stay firmer.
  • It doesn’t hurt to take a moment to rinse out and dry your soap container before you put the soap back in and pack it up. If you’re feeling extra virtuous, dab your soap onto your used towel to dry it a bit more before returning it to the case.

Our Favorite Bar Soaps

Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar

Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar

Cetaphil is one of the best skincare brands for sensitive skin. Its Gentle Cleansing Bar  can take off the day’s grime without stripping your skin of moisture. The creamy white bar is actually soap-free, as soap can often leave skin parched. Instead, Cetaphil uses stearic acid, a natural amino acid, as a cleanser. The bar’s suds rinse off easily without leaving any residue behind.

The Best Handmade Bar Soap

The yellow bird dead sea mud soap bar.

If you’re picky about what goes on your skin (no parabens, sulfates, or alcohol, please!), then start buying The Yellow Bird’s bar soaps by the boatload. The line of handmade and vegan soap starts with organic coconut, sunflower, olive, and palm oils, then add in natural ingredients like peppermint and tea tree.

As the desire for sustainability grows, consumers have begun to shift away from conventional products engineered with harmful chemicals in favor of clean, earth and skin-friendly items. Among those are soaps, which have historically been made with some unsafe ingredients to the detriment of people and the environment. During this watershed moment, biodegradable soaps have increased in popularity as the perfect solution for lovers and advocates of the outdoors who also enjoy a good lather every now and again—even in the backcountry.

In this research-driven guide I'll break down all you need to know about biodegradable soap, and which to buy (scroll down a ways to get right to our top picks for the best biodegradable soaps and wipes).

What Is Biodegradable Soap?

Unlike conventional soap, biodegradable soaps don’t contain surfactants, short for “surface-active agent”, which bind oil and water together in body products. While they aren’t inherently bad for us (unlike parabens or phthalates—harmful chemical compounds found in soaps used as preservatives that can negatively affect ) the hormones in humans and animals, surfactants have been shown to harm aquatic animals and even pose a threat to their watery ecosystem if exposed to enough of those surfactants overtime.

To paraphrase the EPA guide to choosing eco-friendly home cleaning products which have similar ingredients to soaps, the surfactants can break down into “toxic, persistent, and bioaccumulative chemicals” that can eventually begin to degrade aquatic life.

So, when it comes to using a biodegradable soap or body wash both indoors or outside, you can feel good knowing that it’s a product designed to do as little harm to you and the environment as possible. "Using biodegradable soap helps ensure that we’re not polluting groundwater with the products that we use in our homes, or on the go," Laura Marston, owner of a low waste home and refill store GoGo Refill in South Portland, Maine tells Field Mag. "Replacing chemical and sometimes even petroleum-based surfactants with plant-based formulas makes safer products for planet and people alike."

biodegradable-soaps-update-top-picks

What to Look for When Choosing a Biodegradable Soap

Surfactants aren’t the only chemicals capable of causing damage. Before buying, scan the ingredient list of each soap or body wash and be sure to avoid the following toxic ingredients:

SLS and SLES - Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) that are surfactants used as detergents in soaps and body wash to cleanse skin and create a foamy consistency

Parabens and Phthalates - Ingredients used as a preservative, but found to be an endocrine disruptor

Fragrance - An umbrella term for a plethora of unlisted toxic chemicals designed to create a synthetic scent. Opt for fragrance-free soaps or fragrances made with essential oils for a safe alternative

Natural ingredients - Ok, let us be clear, we aren’t saying natural ingredients are harmful, but we are calling out the many companies that use this catch-all term as a way to market a not-so sustainable product as sustainable. Often called “greenwashing”, once you get good at deciphering ingredient lists, you’ll easily spot these unfounded claims a mile away. Other culprits include “eco-friendly” or “all-natural”, which might signal greenwashing if the product label doesn’t back it up.

If you don’t feel confident decoding a product’s list of ingredients or want to learn more, use trustworthy sources like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and the EPA’s Safer Choice have a comprehensive database of what to look for and what to avoid.

biodegradable-soaps-update-juniper-ridge-body-wash

Pros: Sustainably made with natural ingredients Cons: Somewhat small size Best use: Everyday and camping body wash Price: $15

Crafted from a shockingly short list of plant-based ingredients, I loved the purity of Juniper Ridge’s concentrated liquid and bar soaps, which are created from sustainably harvested botanicals to create nature-inspired scents. Through a process of steam-distillation, the essential oils keep their quality and natural fragrance in tact without having to use harmful synthetic chemicals. You can literally smell and feel the difference. Their eight ounce bottle is an ideal size to bring along for camping or travel, but for regular use at home, consider a gallon-size container of your favorite scent for easy, low-waste refills.

Pros: Multi-purpose and affordable Cons: Very highly concentrated Best use: Camping or backpacking Price: $7

Designed for backcountry adventures and car camping getaways alike, Sea to Summit’s multi-purpose, biodegradable Wilderness Wash is a tried and true method for getting squeaky clean outside. As a longtime user of this product, I can attest to its versatility and usefulness, but don’t underestimate it's potency! Durable and travel-friendly, simply toss it into your pack and go. It's also available with a citronella scent to scare off bugs, and check out their compostable Wilderness Wipes for a quick and easy refresh on the trail.

biodegradable-soaps-update-allez-cleansing-cloths

Pros: Convenient and lightweight Cons: Expensive Best use: Backpacking and travel Price: $22

When you don’t have time for a shower, Allez Outdoor’s biodegradable cleansing cloths are a packable and environmentally-friendly way to quickly clean yourself up from head to toe. Each cloth uses natural, non-toxic ingredients like aloe vera, vitamin C and E to gently remove dirt, sunscreen, chalk, that also soothes skin and a natural scent that isn’t overpowering. While testing these cloths on an overnight ski and camping trip, I was pleasantly surprised at the size, and the refreshing yet moisturizing clean feeling that didn’t leave a sticky residue on skin. When you’re done, it’s easy to stuff them back into the packaging and responsibly get rid of them later on. Despite the price, one wipe is pretty effective, so I'm looking forward to having plenty leftover for future backpacking trips or travels when a shower is hard to find.

biodegradable-soaps-update-bathing-culture

Pros: Fun retro-inspired design Cons: Expensive Best use: Everyday body wash Price: $36

Filled with skin superheroes like certified organic coconut oil, aloe vera, and shea butter, Bathing Culture’s biodegradable body wash hydrates and cleanses without a trace of harmful chemicals. Available in two earthy, botanical scents created from essential oil blends inspired by the Northern Californian flora, you only need two pumps to lather yourself up from head to toe, which makes investing in their 22 ounce refillable, recycled glass bottle well worth it. Speaking from experience, it will take you a while to run out of this soap, but when you do, Bathing Culture sells a one gallon refill to save packaging and carbon waste from shipping.

biodegradable-soaps-update-wonder-valley-body-wash

Pros: Beautiful design, recyclable aluminum container Cons: Expensive Best use: Everyday body wash Price: $32

Wonder Valley’s aromatic body wash could also easily earn the superlative of best smell thanks to its woodsy fragrance of hinoki (which has been scientifically proven to have a calming effect on the body and mind, who knew?!) and cedar oils. However, its prized ingredient is extra virgin olive oil that’s harvested and pressed in California for the best and most pure quality possible. There’s no denying that this soap deeply hydrates as intended, which is good news for those with dry skin, and a soothing way to replenish body and mind after spending some time out in the elements. Made without surfactants, preservatives, and other harmful chemicals, Wonder Valley mindfully packages its biodegradable soap in aluminum bottles that can be recycled after use. Also, available in bar form, the Hinoki Bar uses beautifully-designed paper packaging for the lightest footprint possible.

Pros: Invigorating scent and gentle exfoliation Cons: Bar soap only Best use: Everyday body wash Price: $14

The Vermont-based body and wellness company, Ursa Major, crafts natural soaps made with their signature “forest-infused formulas” that are as gentle on the skin as they are on the ecosystem. Their Morning Mojo Bar Soap is free of SLS, SLES, preservatives, parabens, and synthetic fragrance—plus, it’s wrapped in paper, so there’s no plastic involved. I found the exfoliating soap bar’s peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary blend to be an energizing pick-me-up during a morning shower (and a worry-free outdoor shower! ), just as much as it left my skin feeling super clean and refreshed after camping, post surf, or a day spent in the garden.

biodegradable-soaps-update-blueland-soap

Best Foaming Soap: Blueland Hand Soap

Pros: Large glass bottle, good price Cons: Only one size available Best use: Hand soap Price: $22

Blueland developed a simple yet innovative solution that curbs the excessive amount of plastic needed for liquid soap with a reusable glass bottle and non-toxic soap tablet. And it really is that easy: just fill the bottle with warm water, drop a tablet, let it dissolve, and pump. Each tablet is made from a biodegradable plant-based formula that’s certified EPA Safer Choice to be free from preservatives, with scents such as lavender eucalyptus and pacific mist that don't contain harmful synthetic fragrance. I really liked the simplicity of it, the super nice quality reusable glass bottle, and 100% plastic-free packaging. It's a great, low-waste option for those who want an eco-friendly foamy hand soap.

biodegradable-soaps-update-wary-meyers

Best Scent: Wary Meyers Liquid and Bar Soap

Pros: Aesthetically-pleasing and smells great Cons: Liquid soap only available in one size Best use: Hand and body wash Price: $16 - $32

Not to be confused with your run of the mill Mrs. Meyer's, these delightfully scented liquid soaps are crafted by hand in small batches on the Maine coast using a biodegradable formula that's free from preservatives and surfactants. Organic ingredients like aloe vera are used to soften and soothe skin, with each of their soap blends and bars packing a creative punch that ties back to the wild nature of Maine’s mountains , forests, and shoreline. I loved the warm, coconut scent of Beach Vibes that wasn't too overpowering, and the lasting feeling of super soft skin—no really, it was noticeable—and the funky design that spruced up my bathroom counter.

How to Safely Use Biodegradable Soap Outdoors

Versatile and low-impact, biodegradable soaps are great for backpacking or camping because they can be used for dishwashing, laundry detergent, body wash for a camping shower , or hand soap. However, according to Leave No Trace's Seven Principles —the undisputed expert on responsible outdoor recreation—campers should never use soap or dispose of waste water in a water source. Instead, Principle Three recommends “to wash yourself or your dishes, carry water 200 feet away from streams or lakes” or “use a clean pot or other container to collect water, and take it to a wash site at least 200 feet away from water sources.” Biodegradable wipes have also become a hit with campers as a lightweight and easy way to get clean from nose to toes. If you bring them along, just make sure to carry out used wipes along with the rest of your trash to truly leave no trace.

Dove original beauty bar.

Bar soaps aren't new, but they are having a resurgence at the moment. And for good reason: Besides helping to remove makeup , oil, dirt and grime from skin, many of today's bar soap formulas "incorporate milder surfactants such as sodium cocoyl isethionate, which are less drying than traditional soaps ," explains Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty, Health and Sustainability Lab Director Sabina Wizemann .

They're also convenient — in addition to being travel-friendly, most bar soaps can be used on face and body, notes Monica Li, M.D. , a double board-certified dermatologist and clinical assistant professor for the Department of Dermatology and Skin Science at the University of British Columbia. Bar soap is also waterless, so it's "less likely to harbor bacteria as long as it is not stored in water, which also means less preservatives tend to be added," Dr. Li adds.

In the Beauty Lab, our scientists have thoroughly evaluated a wide variety of bar soaps — including options for sensitive skin and dry skin — taking into consideration how well they cleanse, if they leave skin feeling dry, scent and more. Here, we've rounded up our top picks so you can wash gently and effectively.

Olay's GH Beauty Award -winning bar soap is anything but basic: Made with skin-conditioning glycerin and shea extract, the aptly named Ultra Moisture bar is gentle enough to be used on both face and body. These skin nourishers balance the purifying effects of the soap, and it's also well-priced, coming in a pack of eight bars. One tester noted that they "loved the soft lather, satiny feel and clean aroma it left on skin ," though some online reviewers find the scent overpowering.

At just around $11 for 12 bars, you'll be hard-pressed to find a deal better than this one. Despite a bargain price, Wizemann calls the lather "luxurious," producing a "thick and velvety foam that leaves skin feeling smooth and satiny ." She loves the silky texture of the lather as well as the "subtle and not overpowering" fragrance, which she describes as "fruity and clean." However, she does report that the lather does take longer than others to rinse off your skin.

A true classic, Dove's beloved Beauty Bar is a favorite of experts, consumers and editors everywhere — including at Good Housekeeping. GH Beauty Lab Senior Chemist Danusia Wnek says the "tried-and-true product" is "gentle, yet effective," so you can comfortably use it every day. The mildly fragranced bar smells clean and floral. It " doesn't leave my skin feeling dry like traditional bar soaps ," she adds. Some online reviewers share that it can leave residue on their skin, so make sure to thoroughly rinse off after using.

Lafco Chamomile Lavender Bar Soap

Chamomile Lavender Bar Soap

Give yourself (or a loved one) the gift of a luxurious bar soap. This one is a favorite of GH Beauty Director April Franzino . "It is so creamy thanks to a base of plant oils," she shares, adding that it's the perfect present. She loves this soap for the scent as well, calling it "out of this world," and describing it as " herbal yet warm and incredibly sophisticated . You just want to keep smelling it!" It's on the pricier side, but it's larger than other bar soaps and will last a bit longer.

Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar

Gentle Cleansing Bar

Cetaphil is known for its gentle, sensitive skin-friendly formulas, and this bar soap is no different. In her evaluations, Wizemann found that it even suits sensitive facial skin and "does not cause irritation or tightness." The soap also contains glycerin and petrolatum, which are known to help moisturize the skin. She liked the ergonomic shape of this soap, noting that it felt comfortable in her hands.

Be aware that the soap "includes sodium tallowate, a sodium salt derived from animal fats, which may not be suitable for individuals who prefer to avoid such ingredients due to ethical or personal reasons," she explains.

Dr. Squatch Men's Natural Soap in Pine Tar

Men's Natural Soap in Pine Tar

For the man on the hunt for a go-to bar soap, this one from Dr. Squatch will quickly become your favorite. Our Beauty Assistant's brother calls it the "only soap he will use." He especially loves that it " leaves my skin feeling clean after every use, smells amazing and exfoliates ." While he's used a variety of the brand's bar soaps, he especially loves this one thanks to its fresh pine scent. Online reviewers love using it so much that they wish it came in a larger size that lasts longer.

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser Bar

Hydrating Cleanser Bar

When we think CeraVe, we think ceramides. The brand's signature ingredients, this bar soap includes three kinds of ceramides, which "support the skin barrier to reduce moisture loss ," explains Wizemann. It also includes other moisturizing ingredients like petrolatum and glycerin. So, if you have dry skin, it's safe to say this one will do the trick.

"Hands feel clean and soft, with no residue left behind," Wizemann shares. "It's easy to rinse off my hands and the bar itself, which I love because it leaves the bar clean in the soap dish." When she first used the soap, it felt a bit sandy, but it smooths out after the initial grittiness. Dr. Li recommends this soap as well.

Eau Thermale Avène Xeracalm A.D Ultra-Rich Cleansing Bar

Xeracalm A.D Ultra-Rich Cleansing Bar

Recommended by Dr. Li for its "ability to soothe inflamed, itchy and eczema-prone skin ," French pharmacy brand Avéne's bar soap is gentle and dry skin-friendly. Dr. Li notes that it "can be used on both the face and body," so the multitasker can be lathered on anywhere on your body that's feeling extra dry. For those with extremely sensitive or dry skin, ask your dermatologist if this is the right pick for you, as some online reviewers still found their skin to be a bit dry after using.

Carbon Theory Charcoal & Tea Tree Oil Breakout Control Facial Cleansing Bar

Charcoal & Tea Tree Oil Breakout Control Facial Cleansing Bar

Looking for a natural option to keep acne under control? This bar contains charcoal and tea tree oil to help with acne breakouts. "I sweat a lot when I exercise, so I reach for this after a big workout to prevent breakouts on my back and chest ," says GH Freelance Beauty Editor Dori Price . Take note that some online users share that it made their skin feel tight and dry and gave a burning sensation, so this may not be for you if you have extra dry or sensitive skin.

Dr. Bronner's Pure-Castile Bar Soap in Lavender

Pure-Castile Bar Soap in Lavender

Dr. Bronner's is a classic go-to for those looking for an affordable, natural soap. Our beauty editors love the unscented liquid version , but this lavender bar proved to perform well in our Lab evaluations as well. "The lavender scent is calming and refreshing ," says Wizemann. She describes the bar as waxy and found that it lathers smoothly. "Hands are left squeaky clean, but the skin does have some friction and feels tighter." So, it might be best to apply lotion after using this soap.

How we choose the best bar soaps

double line break

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab tests everything from the best body washes to the best body lotions you can buy. To find the best bar soaps, GH Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann evaluated four options, taking into consideration aspects like how well the soap lathers, if it dries out skin, how easily it can be rinsed off skin and more. We used these testing results in combination with recommendations from our beauty editors and dermatologists to create this list of the best bar soaps on the market.

What to look for when shopping for bar soaps

double line break

Consider the your skin type and concerns before making your purchase, so you can find the best one for your needs.

✔️ Oily or acne-prone skin : Glycerin-based soaps are generally gentle and non-comedogenic, Wizemann explains, making them suitable for oily and acne-prone skin (Dr. Li also recommends using a gentle, non-comedogenic soap in your routine). However, if you're looking for active ingredients in your soap, consider tea tree oil or salicylic acid. "Tea tree oil can help reduce acne-causing bacteria and inflammation while controlling excess oil," Wizemann says. "Salicylic acid soaps can unclog pores, exfoliate dead skin cells and reduce oiliness." Look for soaps containing a low concentration of salicylic acid (usually around 2%).

✔️ Sensitive skin : If your skin is sensitive, "we recommend avoiding fragrances and opt for unscented options, including essential oils," says Wizemann. Fragrance can irritate sensitive skin.

✔️ Dry skin : In general, but especially if you have dry skin, it's great if your soap "contains added skin-barrier supporting skin care ingredients such as ceramides, glycerin and hyaluronic acid," says Dr. Li. Shea butter is also another good ingredient to look for, Wizemann adds.

How to Travel with Bar Soap

Bar soap is a great way to keep your skin clean and fresh while traveling, but it can be a hassle to pack. In this article, we’ll share some tips on how to travel with bar soap without any trouble.

We’ll cover everything from choosing the right soap for travel to packing it safely and securely. So whether you’re headed on a long-haul flight or a weekend getaway, read on for all the information you need to know about traveling with bar soap.

Choose the Right Bar Soap

When choosing a bar soap for travel, there are a few factors to consider.

  • Hard vs. soft soap . Hard soaps are typically made with a higher concentration of oils and butters, which makes them more moisturizing. Soft soaps, on the other hand, are made with a higher concentration of water, which makes them more lathery. If you have dry skin, you may want to choose a hard soap. If you have oily skin, you may want to choose a soft soap.
  • Fragranced vs. unscented soap . Fragranced soaps can be a nice way to add a touch of luxury to your shower routine, but they can also be irritating to sensitive skin. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to choose an unscented soap.
  • Natural vs. synthetic soap . Natural soaps are made with ingredients that are derived from plants and animals, while synthetic soaps are made with chemicals. Natural soaps are often gentler on the skin than synthetic soaps, but they may not be as effective at cleaning.
  • Travel-sized soap bars . If you’re only going to be gone for a few days, you may want to consider purchasing travel-sized soap bars. Travel-sized soap bars are typically smaller and lighter than full-sized soap bars, making them easier to pack.

Pack Your Bar Soap Properly

Once you’ve chosen the right bar soap for travel, you need to pack it properly to prevent it from leaking or getting damaged.

  • Wrap your soap . The best way to protect your soap from leaks is to wrap it in a plastic bag or wrap it in a piece of cloth. You can also use a soap saver, which is a mesh bag that helps to keep your soap dry and prevents it from slipping out of your soap dish.
  • Store your soap . When you’re not using your soap, store it in a dry, cool place. Avoid storing your soap in a humid environment, as this can cause it to become soggy and moldy.
  • Protect your soap from leaks . If you’re worried about your soap leaking, you can place it in a waterproof container or bag. You can also use a leak-proof soap dish.

By following these tips, you can easily choose and pack the perfect bar soap for your next trip. With a little planning, you can enjoy the benefits of bar soap without having to worry about leaks or damage.

3. Use Your Bar Soap Effectively

How to lather your soap

To lather your bar soap, wet your hands and rub the soap between them. The soap will start to foam up, and you can then apply it to your body. You can also use a loofah or washcloth to help lather the soap.

How to rinse your soap

After you’re finished washing, rinse the soap off your body and hands. You can do this by running water over your hands or by using a shower head. Be sure to rinse the soap off completely, so that there’s no residue left on your skin.

How to store your soap after use

After you’re finished using your bar soap, you can store it in a soap dish or on a soap saver. A soap dish will help to keep your soap dry, while a soap saver will help to prevent it from drying out. You can also store your soap in a plastic bag or container.

4. Travel With Bar Soap Safely

How to avoid soapy spills

When traveling with bar soap, it’s important to take precautions to avoid soapy spills. Here are a few tips:

  • Pack your soap in a sealed bag or container. This will help to prevent the soap from leaking out if the bag or container is jostled.
  • Place your soap in a spot where it won’t be jostled during travel. This could mean packing it in your suitcase or backpack, or storing it in a bathroom cabinet.
  • If you’re worried about your soap leaking, you can wrap it in a dry towel or cloth. This will help to absorb any excess moisture.

How to prevent soap from drying out

When traveling, it’s important to keep your bar soap from drying out. Here are a few tips:

  • Pack your soap in a sealed bag or container. This will help to keep the soap moist.
  • Place your soap in a spot where it won’t be exposed to direct sunlight or heat. This could mean packing it in your suitcase or backpack, or storing it in a bathroom cabinet.
  • If you’re worried about your soap drying out, you can wrap it in a damp cloth. This will help to keep the soap moist.

How to deal with soap that melts

If your bar soap melts during travel, don’t worry. Here are a few ways to deal with it:

  • If the soap is only slightly melted, you can reshape it by placing it in the freezer for a few minutes.
  • If the soap is completely melted, you can pour it into a mold and let it cool.
  • You can also use melted soap to make a liquid soap. To do this, mix the melted soap with water and essential oils.

Bar soap is a great way to cleanse your skin, but it can be tricky to travel with. By following these tips, you can safely and effectively use bar soap while traveling.

How do I keep my bar soap from melting in my suitcase?

  • Wrap the soap in a plastic bag. This will create a barrier between the soap and the heat, helping to prevent it from melting.
  • Place the soap in a cool part of your suitcase. Avoid storing it near the radiator or other heat sources.
  • Pack the soap in a way that it won’t be jostled around. This will help to prevent it from breaking into smaller pieces.

What kind of bar soap is best for traveling?

  • Hard soaps are less likely to melt than soft soaps.
  • Unscented soaps are less likely to irritate your skin if they come into contact with your clothes or other belongings.
  • Small, travel-sized soaps are easier to pack than full-sized bars.

How do I use bar soap in a hotel shower?

  • Place the soap in a soap dish or on a ledge in the shower. This will help to keep it from slipping and falling.
  • Wet the soap before using it. This will help to create a lather and make it easier to apply.
  • Rinse the soap off after each use. This will help to prevent it from building up in the shower.

Can I use bar soap in a sink?

Yes, you can use bar soap in a sink. However, it is important to rinse the soap off after each use to prevent it from building up in the sink.

What are the benefits of using bar soap?

  • Bar soap is typically less expensive than liquid soap.
  • Bar soap is more environmentally friendly than liquid soap. Liquid soap can create more waste, as it requires a plastic bottle.
  • Bar soap can be more moisturizing than liquid soap. Liquid soap can strip away natural oils from the skin, while bar soap can help to replenish them.

What are the drawbacks of using bar soap?

  • Bar soap can be more difficult to travel with than liquid soap. It can melt if it is not stored properly.
  • Bar soap can be more difficult to use in a public restroom. It can be difficult to find a place to set it down without getting it wet.
  • Bar soap can be more difficult to use in a sink. It can be difficult to keep it from slipping and falling.

In this article, we have discussed how to travel with bar soap. We have covered the different types of bar soaps, how to choose the right one for travel, and how to pack it safely. We have also provided tips on how to use bar soap while traveling and how to avoid common problems.

We hope that this article has been helpful and that you will find it useful on your next trip. Remember, bar soap is a great option for travel, as it is lightweight, compact, and affordable. It is also gentle on your skin and can help you to avoid breakouts.

Here are the key takeaways from this article:

  • Choose a bar soap that is made with natural ingredients and is free of harsh chemicals.
  • Pack your bar soap in a small, waterproof container.
  • Use a soap dish or a piece of cloth to keep your bar soap dry while you are traveling.
  • Rinse your bar soap thoroughly after each use.
  • Avoid using bar soap on your face, as it can be too harsh for delicate skin.

By following these tips, you can enjoy the benefits of bar soap while traveling without any problems.

The Best Travel Soap Case, Dish, Bag or Container

Last Updated on May 22, 2020

Nobody wants mushy, gunky soap getting all over their clothes.

But a bar of soap is often the best cleanser to pack when traveling.

The solution is a travel soap case or bag. They’re perfect for traveling and you can also use them to take a bar of soap to the gym or sports club, but they are not all created equally.

We review a lot of travel gear at TravelingLight.com and feel that the soap case is often an undervalued travel accessory.

This post has a look at what’s on offer and picks out what we think is the best product.

At A Glance: The Best Travel Soap Case

  • #1 Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Bag – A breathable yet water repellent bag to pack your soap in.
  • #2 Carry-Dri Vented Travel Soap Case – A vented plastic soap case that lets your soap dry without leaking water on your clothes.
  • #3 Kiasona Travel Soap Case Box – A secure case that won’t open unexpectedly.
  • #4 Puting Portable Soap Saver – An economical multipack.

Packing A Bar of Soap vs Body Wash or Shower Gel

What you use at home comes down to personal preference.

But when you are traveling there is a compelling reason to pack soap in a soap holder rather than body wash or shower gel.

Body wash is a liquid and subject to the TSA liquids rule meaning you can only pack travel-size body wash bottles in your carry on luggage.

A bar of soap is solid and not subject to the liquids rule. So you don’t need to put a solid soap bar in your quart-sized baggie when going through the TSA security checkpoint.

You can pack as many soap bar cases as you want in your luggage, it’s even possible to get shampoo bars that work just as well as their liquid counterparts. And a bar of laundry soap allows you to wash your underwear in the hotel sink so you don’t need to pack as many clothes.

By switching liquids for solids you can make packing carry on luggage a lot easier.

Also, a bar of soap lasts a lot longer than body wash. I’ll be lucky is a travel-size bottle of shower gel will last me 2 showers but a bar of soap can last for weeks.

All this means that soap is a great option to pack when traveling, but you do need a travel soap dish or at the very least a ziplock bag to stop your clothes from getting wet from the soap bar.

What Makes A Good Travel Soap Dish?

It might seem like a simple product but there are still some things that a travel soap case needs to do well.

A good travel soap case:

  • Protects Your Soap Bar – It’s important to let soap dry after use. If a bar of soap stays wet too long or it goes all soft and mushy.
  • Doesn’t leak! – You have a quick shower and then immediately pack to get ready to check out your accommodation. Your soap bar is still going to be wet and you’d better hope your travel soap case doesn’t leak or you’ll get gunk all over your suitcase.
  • Is the Right Size – Your soap container needs to be able to fit your soap bars. Make sure your soap holder is the right dimensions to hold the bar of soap that you want to pack but not be too large that it takes up space in your bag.
  • Is Not Too Heavy – We’re all about traveling light here so we don’t want a soap case that’s going to add unnecessary weight to our case.

If you don’t have a soap dish for travel you could always use a plastic ziplock bag for a soap bag. The problem with that is that the soap gets all soggy and it becomes very messy fast.

The following travel soap cases are all available on Amazon if you buy we receive a small commission but it doesn’t affect the price that you pay.

Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Bag

travel friendly soap

The Matador soap bag is made with water-repellent material. This means that any splashes don’t penetrate the bag.

The fabric is also breathable so if your soap bar is damp when you put it in the bag it will be dry next time you take it out.

Frequent travelers love this travel soap case. It’s very useful when packing.

  • The design means that the bag stops the gunk from getting on your clothes but allows the soap bar to dry
  • Not easy to get the soap in and out of the bag. Since it’s not a soap case it doesn’t function as a soap dish or a soap holder while you are in the shower.

Carry-Dri Vented Travel Soap Case

travel friendly soap

The Carry-Dri makes some bold claims. A plastic soap case that doesn’t leak but also has vents? Surely that’s not possible.

But yet it seems like they’ve pulled it off. Many people love this soap dish for travel precisely because it’s vented and stops their soap bar from getting soggy but doesn’t leak water drips into your clothes.

If you’ve just recently had a shower it might be an idea to pack this in an outer pocket of your bag just in case. That way any drips that did escape the container would evaporate quickly.

  • It’s vented so your bar of soap can dry off
  • Water won’t spill on your clothes
  • It will still get messy inside the case and you’ll need to wash it every now and then
  • The case is significantly larger than the soap bar it holds

Carry-Dri made this video that shows their product.

Kiasona Travel Soap Case Box

travel friendly soap

The Kiasona is a hard plastic soap box that fits a normal-sized soap bar.

The included band gives extra security that the case won’t open accidently but can be a little tight to get on and off.

Inside the case, there is a sponge that is designed to wick away moisture from the soap bar so that it retains its shape.

  • Airtight and doesn’t leak
  • Despite the sponge, the soap bar can still degrade and become a bit soggy

PUTING Portable Soap Saver

travel friendly soap

The Puting brand of soap dishes is a more affordable option. You can get a pack of 4 soap dishes from the same price that other sellers charge for 1 dish.

That makes it a great option if you are taking more than 1 bar of soap on your trip, for example, a shampoo bar or a laundry bar.

It’s also economical if your traveling partner needs a soap case too.

  • Economical multipack
  • They don’t close airtight (although some people might view this as a pro)

Final Thoughts

The best travel soap case is a thing of personal preference. There is some innovation but most products are relatively similar. The ones we’ve looked at in this post give a fair representation of what’s on offer.

Friendly by name, Friendly by nature

Rob & Geoff use the ancient cold-process method of soap making, which creates a biodegradable soap with zero by-products. There is literally no waste. Striving always to minimise their impact on the environment, as little energy as possible is used throughout production – every bar of Friendly Soap is poured, cut, stamped and packed by hand, here in the UK.

Friendly Soaps are all free from Palm Oil, Parabens, Sulphates, Triclosan, Phthalates and Cruelty, as well as being boxed in plastic free, recycled (and recyclable) packaging. They are also registered with The Vegan Society, Cruelty Free International and have a 'Best' rating with Ethical Consumer.

Their story is all about what is left in as well as what is left out. Friendly Soaps won’t dry your skin because all the valuable, naturally-occurring glycerine is left in the soap, so you get a wash that is rich and moisturising.

Also, the soaps are all made using ethically-sourced natural plant-based oils – coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil, shea butter and cocoa butter. Each has its own unique qualities and they are all naturally nourishing and moisturising.

Essential oils, flowers, spices and herbs are used for their scent and colour, their healing properties, and some – such as poppy seeds and hemp bran – will gently exfoliate the skin.

Friendly Soaps never use Palm Oil and believe the best thing for the rainforests, its animals and the earth is to avoid it entirely. Shea Butter is bought from a women’s worker cooperative in Ghana and the Coconut Oil is not produced using slave monkeys to pick the fruit. Yes, in some places, this actually happens!

By constantly scrutinising their production methods and working practices, Friendly take little steps towards their goal of producing a zero impact natural soap and business model that benefits the planet, its animals and its people.

The end result of all this thought and consideration? Beautifully luxurious soaps that care for you and the planet. Enjoy with a clean conscience!

10 Best Travel Soap Cases: Traveler's Top Picks!

10 Best Travel Soap Cases: Traveler's Top Picks!

There's nothing worse than opening your luggage to find soapy dampness all over your clothes or electronics! Luckily, I discovered travel soap cases, which have really come a long way since their invention. Learn about some of my favourite picks...

travel friendly soap

Today, soap is on almost every traveler's  packing list . Let's be real: even if you stay at a hotel that provides shampoo and soap, the free stuff is usually not that great.

I always like to take a favorite soap and shampoo bar with me for the start of a longer trip. Then I usually buy new ones locally to explore new scents. Why? I like that soaps and shampoo bars aren't as bulky as their liquid counterparts.

The only issue is storing them properly. You don't want wet soap bars in your luggage, especially not if you also have books and electronics in your backpack or suitcase. While a plastic bag would do the job, it wouldn't do it well.

Enter the travel soap case: The perfect solution to storing soap when traveling. In this article, I'll introduce you to 10 of the best travel soap cases and give you some helpful info.

How Do You Store Soap When Traveling?

I already mentioned that a mere plastic bag or wrap isn't the solution. So, what is it? There are two common ways to store soap while on the road.

Travel Soap Cases

The travel soap case, also called a travel soap container or box, is usually square, oval, or round. It can be made from plastic, metal, and other materials like bamboo. Plastic-free options are becoming more popular these days.

A travel soap case is made from a lower and upper half. The lower half sometimes has a separate soap dish in it. The two halves seal the case when closed so that no water escapes.

Travel Soap Bags

A good travel soap bag is a suitable alternative if you have nothing heavy in your luggage. A soap bag isn't as sturdy as a soap case, so your soap can easily be squashed, especially if it's still wet.

Some soap bags are cool though. I like  Travel Buddy's travel soap bag . It's awesome if you carry a  backpack  because you can attach it to the outside. This solves the problem of soap leaking inside your bag!

Travel Soap Bag By Ace Travel Buddy

When Was the Travel Soap Case Invented?

Soap has existed for over 4,000 years, and soap dishes for at least 1,400 years. Soap containers from the 18th century already had important features for modern soap cases. They could be beautiful but weren't exactly made for traveling light.

It seems impossible to pinpoint the first-ever travel soap case. But it's safe to say plastic travel soap containers as we know them today haven't been around earlier than the 20th century.

What to Keep In Mind When Buying Travel Soap Containers

There are three important things to consider when choosing a suitable travel soap container.

3. Material

You don't want something flimsy. It must be strong enough not to be squashed by everything else in your pack.

Soaps can come in all sorts of shapes, usually round or square. Ensure you buy a container that suits the soap you use.

Buy a case that is just big enough to fit your soap. If the soap container is too big, your soap will move around too much, making the inside messy.

And if it's too small, you'll have a problem closing the container once the soap is in it!

10 Great Soap Storage Solutions for Travelers

10. best small travel soap case.

AUEAR's small portable soap container  is one of the smallest travel soap cases you can find. Each of the four cases is just over 7 cm long and wide. If you like the colors but need a slightly bigger case, the company also has a bigger case.

The cases are made from non-toxic, food-grade PP plastic and are lightweight.

Reasons to Like AUER's Travel Soap Case

  • Very good price for a 4-pack
  • Pretty colors
  • Ideal size for small bars of soap

Top Product Overview

Top products, flatpak soap bar case.

Matador Soap Bar Case - Waterproof & Leakproof Bar Soap Travel Case, Quick Dry Soap Pouch for Standard Soap Bars, Shampoo Bars & Conditioner Bars

The FlatPak soap bar case is one of the lightest and smallest cases for soap you can get. It’s made from waterproof ripstop nylon and it features a roll-top with buckle closure, which ensures that the soap will never leak through the bag. On the other hand, the case allows the soap to dry through the fabric, so it never gets mushy.

In addition to being extremely waterproof , this travel soap case is also super lightweight and durable. Unlike the plastic soap cases, this won’t take up too much space in your toiletry bag. Also, because it’s made from fabric, you can fold it and manipulate it to fit into pretty much any pocket – if the soap bar can fit, then the case can as well.

This travel soap case is TSA-approved , which should make your time at checkpoints much shorter. Plus, it’s worth noting that the case is waterproof on both sides. The soap can’t leak through the bag, and water can’t penetrate the case from outside to make your soap all mushy and slippery.

When it comes to lightweight fabric soap cases, the FlatPak soap bar case is one of the best options available on the market. The only downside is the high price point, but it is one of those things that you will be buying for life, so I think it’s worth it.

  • Waterproof and leakproof
  • Very lightweight and packable
  • Extremely durable

Product Information

  • Material: Waterproof ripstop nylon
  • Dimensions: 4” x 2.4” x 1.3” max
  • Weight: 0.4 ounces

Snowkingdom 2 Pack Clear Travel Soap Box

Snowkingdom 2 Pack Clear Travel Soap Box Holder Case Container Leak Proof Shower Bathroom Home Outdoor Hiking Camping

The Snowkingdom pack of two soap boxes is a great option if you want something simple and affordable. The pack includes two plastic boxes and two little mesh bags that provide an extra layer of protection. The mesh bag absorbs water and residue, ensuring the soap bar doesn’t get mushy while it’s inside the container.

It’s also a great idea to leave your soap in the mesh bag while you’re using it since it can create lather quickly without making the soap too mushy. My mind was blown when I first tried this, so definitely check it out if you haven’t already.

Also, the inside of the box is ribbed, so the soap bar shouldn’t stick to the plastic even if you put it inside without the mesh bag. It’s worth noting that this specific soap container doesn’t feature a drying rack, so if you don’t use the mesh bag, the soap will get a little mushy. There aren’t any drainage holes either, so the box should stay completely leakproof as long as it’s intact.

The only downside of this soap box is that it can’t withstand a lot of abuse. If it gets thrown around a lot or squished too hard, the plastic will crack and the box will become useless. Luckily, you get two of these in the pack, so if one does break, you’ll have a backup at the ready!

  • Great value for money
  • Holds even Dove soap bars
  • Mesh bags included with containers
  • Plastic will crack under too much pressure
  • No drainage rack inside
  • Material: PP Plastic
  • Dimensions: 4.7” x 3.1” x 1.8”
  • Weight: 4 ounces

Quatish Travel Soap Holder

Quatish Soap Holder 2 Pack, Travel Soap Container with Lid, Portable Bar Soap Holder, Leakproof Soap Box with Perforations, Round Soap Dishes for Traveling, Camping, Gym (Green)

The Quatish travel soap case is a great option if you usually buy round soap bars. This round case is made from polypropylene plastic , so it’s very sturdy and durable. Also, the Quatish soap holder is actually sold in packs of two, so you’re getting great value for your money!

This soap holder features a layered design, with a drying rack inside that lets the soap drain and prevents it from sticking to the case. It’s very easy to dump any excess water from the case, plus this design ensures that the soap doesn’t get mushy and disintegrates inside the holder.

The case is waterproof and leakproof , so you can keep it in the shower. Also, although the case features a round design, it’s big enough to hold some smaller rectangular and oval soap bars. The soap holder is available in six colors, and no matter which one you pick, you’re getting two travel cases for less than $9!

  • The layered design ensures soap doesn’t get mushy
  • The round case won’t fit all square and rectangular soap bars
  • Material: Polypropylene
  • Dimensions: 3.74” x 3.74” x 1.57”

Kiasona 2Pack Travel Soap Box

Kiasona 2Pack Travel Soap Box,soap Bar Holder Dish Container Case with Sponge Saver&Silicone Band,Strong Sealing,Leak Proof,Portable,Best for Bathroom,Gym,School,Camping,Hiking,Vacation(Pack of 2)

The Kisaona travel soap box is another excellent option. It’s a plastic soap case that comes with a sponge inside, which is supposed to absorb any liquids to keep the soap from becoming mushy. It does an excellent job, but it does mean that there’s another part of the travel soap container that you need to clean after a few uses.

The plastic soap box features a removable lid that is held in place with a silicone band. The band is extra sturdy and does an excellent job at ensuring a watertight seal on the case. It won’t leak even when you turn it upside down, and it prevents water from seeping inside the case.

Would it hold up if you were to submerge the soap box entirely underwater? I’m not sure, but that’s not something you should be doing if you don’t want mushy soap anyway! When it comes to keeping the box in the shower, it should keep the soap completely dry until you take it out and use it.

This bundle includes two soap cases with all their accessories, and it’s very affordable. If you’re on a tight budget and you’re looking for a great deal, this is one of the best travel soap cases to buy!

  • The sponge keeps soap from becoming mushy
  • Takes a while to clean all the pieces
  • Material: Plastic and silicone
  • Dimensions: 4.6” x 3.3” x 1.8”
  • Weight: 4.6 ounces

Marlowe Travel Soap Holder

MARLOWE. No. 401 Travel Soap Case with Zipper Closure, 1 Portable Soap Holder for Bar Soap, Durable Soap Container for Traveling, Vacations, Camping & Gym

The Marlowe travel soap holder is a great option if you prefer a fabric soap case. It’s made from waterproof fabric and it features a zipper, so there’s no way this soap case can accidentally pop open. It’s both leakproof and waterproof, and it’s just the right size to hold a Marlow soap bar.

It can also hold other soap bars, and because it is fabric, you can even squeeze in a round bar in this case. The material is soft and plasticky, and it’s able to let the soap breathe so it doesn’t get mushy inside the container. Also, the material is slightly transparent, and the soap inside makes the case look a little grimy from the outside.

Although this case is a bit pricey for what it is, the high-quality materials and excellent performance make it worth every penny. It’s much more durable and reliable than a classic plastic case, and it should hold up for several years. The case is also very easy to clean – you just need to run it through the water to rinse off any residue and that’s it.

  • Durable waterproof zipper
  • Lightweight and packable
  • Easy to clean
  • Won’t fit bigger soap bars
  • Material: Waterproof fabric
  • Dimensions: 5.8” x 2.6” x 1”
  • Weight: 0.8 ounces

PUTING Plastic Soap Container

4pcs Plastic Soap Holder Container Soap Saver Box Case for Bathroom Shower Home Outdoor Camping Set of 4

The Puting set of plastic soap cases includes four soap containers , making it an excellent option if you need several of these cases. They’re all standard plastic travel soap cases with a drying rack inside and a PE lid that ensures a watertight seal on the box. The lid is flexible, so it’s very easy to put on, and it will not crack that easily under pressure.

The drying rack is a nice addition because you can keep your soap on it even at the hotel, and the bar will stay dry and not mushy. But you have to take it out of the container, otherwise, all the residue will collect at the bottom of the soap box, and it will be very annoying to clean.

It’s also worth noting that you should drain any water before you seal the box and put it in your toiletry bag. The drying rack works only when the box is in the regular position – turn it upside down, and all that water will get back on the soap and make it mushy.

The Puting travel soap case is large enough to hold even Dove bars, which is very convenient. It won’t be able to hold 9 and 10-ounce bars, but anything smaller than that should fit nicely in the container.

  • Great value
  • Drying rack inside
  • A flexible lid ensures a watertight seal
  • The plastic box can crack under pressure
  • Does not fit 9oz bars (and bigger)
  • Material: PP and PE plastic
  • Dimensions: 3.75” x 15” x 2.5”
  • Weight: 6.4 ounces

Foamie Travel Buddy

FOAMIE Travel Buddy - Shampoo Bar Travel Case with Removable Shelf - Water Tight, Sustainable Materials - Perfect for Travel, Camping and in the Shower

If you use Foamie soap bars, this is definitely the best travel soap container to get. And even if you don’t use their bars, it’s worth checking out this eco-friendly case. It’s made from 80% wheat fiber and 20% recycled polypropylene, so it is entirely sustainable.

The travel container features a silicone band that guarantees a watertight seal , as well as a flexible drying rack inside, which prevents residue build-up.

The only issue with the Foamie Travel Buddy is that it is designed to fit Foamie bars specifically, so it’s not going to fit every bar of soap you can get your hands on. But if you want to get a product that’s affordable and 100% sustainable, this is your best option.

Also, it’s worth noting that the case is a bit difficult to open, which is a really good thing. It just means that it’s a lot harder for the lid to come undone accidentally, ensuring that the container will remain sealed no matter what.

  • Eco-friendly and sustainable
  • Watertight seal
  • Quite small – made for Foamie bars
  • Material: 80% wheat fiber, 20% recycled polypropylene, silicone
  • Dimensions: 5.24” x 3.35” x 1.57“
  • Weight: 1.8 ounces

Dr. Squatch Travel Bag for Bar Soap

Dr. Squatch Travel Bag for Bar Soap – Take Your Beloved Soap on The Road with This Super-Absorbent Drying Canvas Bag

The Dr. Squatch travel bag is specifically designed for this brand’s soap bars, so it’s by far the best option if you use them. Dr. Squatch soap bars are quite big, and they don’t really fit in most other travel cases.

This travel bag is made from heavy-weight burlap linen, which is extremely absorbent . It allows to soap bar to dry very quickly, so it doesn’t turn to mush when you pack it.

Also, the bag features a drawstring closure with an Egyptian Undyed Wetspun Warp, which has a higher tensile strength than even cotton. The entire soap case is very sturdy and reliable, and it’s absolutely perfect for Dr. Squatch bars!

It’s worth noting that the linen bag is not waterproof, so you shouldn’t keep it in the shower. Also, you should consider putting the soap case in a ziplock plastic bag, just to ensure that it doesn’t leak in your luggage.

  • Perfect size for Dr. Squatch soap bars
  • Absorbent material dries soap quickly
  • Not waterproof
  • Material: Burlap linen
  • Dimensions: 4” x 4”
  • Weight: 0.6 oz

What To Look For

Plastic or fabric.

Would you rather have a soap case made from plastic or fabric? Plastic soap cases are more common, and they’re generally the cheaper option. They’re usually waterproof and leakproof, but they can get crushed upon heavy impact. That won’t happen with fabric soap cases, since they are much more flexible.

Also, fabric cases are lighter and more packable, and they take up virtually no space in your bag when they’re empty.

The main advantage of a fabric soap case is that you can manipulate it to fit into smaller spaces. A plastic soap requires more space in your toiletry bag, so go with fabric if you usually struggle to close your bag. Also, fabric soap cases are a bit easier to clean, since you just need to wash them out to make them pristine again.

Another great thing about fabric soap bags is that you can fit bars of different shapes inside them. They’ll fit round and oval bars as well as square ones, while a square plastic container might not be able to hold a large, round soap bar.

What Soap Bars Do You Usually Use?

The travel soap cases featured in this review will fit most soap bars on the market. But, there are some brands that make extra-large soap bars, and those won’t always fit in the classic soapboxes. If you use a brand that makes really big bars be sure to check if they offer a travel case for their soap because that’s the easiest way to ensure that your bar will fit in the travel case.

Alternatively, you should look at the dimensions of each of the soap cases, and check whether they’re big enough to hold your favorite soap bar. Also, the shape of the soap bar matters. Most of the boxes featured here are square or oval because that’s the shape of most soap bars.

But if you usually use rounder soap bars as Dove makes, you’ll need to take a closer look at the dimensions to see if the bar can fit in the travel case you want. Or just get the travel case that’s the same shape like your favorite soap bar!

Best Travel Soap Case: Our Top Picks

Still not sure which travel soap case to get? Go with one of our top picks and you won’t have any regrets!

If you like the idea of a fabric soap case, the FlatPak is by far the best option out there. It’s entirely waterproof and leakproof, with Hypalon rolltop closure and a sturdy YKK buckle. Also, the fabric is breathable, and it will let the soap dry, so it doesn’t get mushy.

The case is a lot lighter and more compact than standard plastic cases, and it will easily fit into any luggage.

  • Waterproof & Leakproof: Fear no more soap spills with this waterproof and leakproof Matador soap pocket. Put it in a bag and you'll never have to worry the soap leaking into your stuff!
  • Flexible Fabric: 3x lighter and 6x more compact than traditional plastic soap holder. The fabric design allows this travel soap case to adapt to the size of soap bars

The Snowkingdom soap holder is a great option if you prefer plastic cases. You get two plastic soapboxes, and each comes with a mesh bag. Store the soap inside the mesh bag to create an instant lather when you use it, but also to keep it from getting mushy and falling apart inside the case. The soap holder is made from non-toxic polypropylene for excellent durability.

In case you usually use round soap bars, you’re better off getting a round soap holder. The Quatish soap case is a great option because it features a layered design with a drying rack.

The rack prevents the soap from touching the bottom of the case and makes it super easy to dump any excess water that drains from the soap bar. The case is durable, waterproof, and leakproof, and it’s easily one of the best travel soap cases you can get your hands on!

  • Create a clean, dry and spotless gym bag or suitcase with the three-piece soap dish, drainage tray and lid from Quatish. The bottom tray collects water runoff, and the slotted layer ensures that the soap stays dry after use, which will prolong the life of your soap. The modern, clean design complements any decor, and it is a handy helper during your traveling.
  • Leak Proof:This case is very durable. It comes with a leak-proof design and can be locked. The tight lid prevents any possible leaking of the wet soap. The locked design will keep the case from opening unexpectedly. This soap case is handy for carrying your own soap, and keep suitcase clean.

Several Ideas for Making Your Own Travel Soaps

Avatar photo

This post may contain affiliate links.

travel friendly soap

The temperature recently reached the 80s here in North Carolina, and it had me thinking about summer. With warmer weather I love to just take off and go, often camping or staying at a friend’s for the night. I like to bring my own soap so I don’t use their supply. While lugging a full bar of soap around can be cumbersome, it gets worse when I can’t make up my mind and want to take 5-6 of my homemade bars. That takes up a lot of space!

Make Any Soap a DIY Travel Soap

There are a few ways you can take many bars of soap on a trip without taking up too much space. These are a few of my favorites:

Soap Petals

Take any bar of homemade soap that is still a bit soft. This won’t work with hard bars. Use a vegetable peeler and peel off a few slices. They should form easily and can be cut smaller if you wish. Store these in a small jar with a tight fitting lid.

Soap Sticks

Again, use bars that are somewhat soft. Use a sharp knife and cut off a slice about ¼-inch thick. Then cut these into ¼-inch slices, somewhat like a carrot stick. Store in a tightly sealed jar.

Mold into Small Bars

If you have glycerin soap , you can melt it in a double boiler and pour it into a smaller mold, like those used to make chocolates or ice cubes . I like to find really small molds that make a one-time use soap bar. When they cool completely, pop them out and store them in a sealed container.

Make a Soap Paste

Grate any soap with a kitchen box grater . Place the shavings into a small jar and add just enough water to get wet. There should be no standing water. Cover and let it sit for an hour or so. Stir and add a bit more water if necessary. This will form a thick paste that you can dip into for the perfect amount for each use.

Make Soap Paper

To make paper soap you will need dissolving paper. ( Find it here or at fabric stores.) It is sold as a stabilizer for fabrics that is meant to dissolve when the fabric is run through a washer.

Begin by turning your soap into a thick liquid using the method above for paste, but adding a bit more liquid. As your soap is setting up, take a sheet of dissolving paper and “paint” it with the soap liquid. Allow it to dry, then cut it into small pieces. Place these pieces in a small tin ( these are perfect for soap papers ).

Benefits of Making DIY Travel Soap Sizes

While space has already been mentioned, there are other reasons you may want to make your own travel size soap.

Customizable

Make the scents you want, not just what is available in the store. Often in the travel section there is one small bar of soap… two kinds if you’re lucky.

You can use soaps that have special properties, like acne fighting , moisturizing , or shampoo bar . You’ll almost never find these at a store.

Controlling what’s in the soap. I make my own soap, so I know if I use mine, there are no artificial colors, fragrances, or preservatives that I don’t want.

You can control the size. Do you want tiny bars that last for just one washing, or do you want something a bit bigger for a weekend trip?

Eco-Friendly

There is not as much packaging, sometimes none. If I use my own soap, there is no packaging waste and I can reuse the jar or container that was holding my soap.

Homemade soaps are often completely biodegradable, whereas some commercial soaps are not.

You can use the type of container you prefer. I take mine in a small jar, but you can also use a small tin , a plastic bowl with lid, or a zip-top plastic bag. Be sure that whatever you use is waterproof. Soap, when wet from use, can get other things wet. And handmade soap retains its natural glycerin, which is a humectant, pulling moisture out of the air. A muslin bag may seem practical at first, but any bit of humidity can get in, making your soap sweat and get soggy.

Kids often drop soap that is too big for them. Hand them a tiny bar or a soap petal, and it’ll be easier for them to handle.

You can use the small bars as a laundry pre-treatment. It never fails, when I go hiking I get dirty. With the smaller bars of soap, you can drop a few drops of water onto a grass stain (or any other stain) and leave it until you get home. A small amount won’t get onto your skin and will help to get the stain out when you wash the clothes.

Money Savings

We all like saving money, and making your own travel bars will help with that. I’ve priced out travel bars of soap at many locations. The cheapest ones run around $1.00 and are more detergent than soap. They can run upwards of $4.00 for a smaller size version of what you would normally buy, sometimes exceeding the cost of a bigger bar. No, you don’t have to pay a fortune for convenience.
